HELLO And welcome to Autumn 2013 at the Rose. The Rose has enjoyed a brilliant Spring Season, with widely acclaimed productions of Noël Coward’s The Vortex, Richard Bean’s Smack Family Robinson and Peter Nichols’ A Day in the Death of Joe Egg, as well as visits from Northern Broadsides, Propeller and many others. The Rose, this year, is on a roll! The centrepiece of our Autumn Season 2013 will be my new production of Ibsen’s masterpiece Ghosts. I’m thrilled to be returning to Ibsen after the success of The Lady from the Sea, and I do hope you’ll see it. It’s my farewell production for the Rose, but it also marks the 20th anniversary of our co-producers, English Touring Theatre, which I founded in 1993. I plan to make it special. We’re delighted to welcome the great Maureen Lipman in a new play by Oliver Cotton, Daytona, a handsome adaptation of Mansfield Park from Bury St Edmunds, the Actors of Dionysus with Medea, the anarchic and hilarious Spymonkey’s Oedipussy and a huge range of children’s shows, as well as comedy, music, dance and drama. Over the summer we play host to the fourth International Youth Arts Festival, Let Me In - a short season of work for and by young people with learning disabilities - and Kingston Connections, Kingston’s new reading and storytelling festival. Last but not least, don’t forget to book for this Christmas’ family spectacular, The Snow Gorilla. I stand down as Artistic Director after Ghosts and so this is the last of these welcomes that I’ll write. I’m hugely proud of what’s been achieved by the Rose since we opened in January 2008 and I wish it every best for the future.

This production of Ibsen’s masterpiece is inspired by the artist Edvard Munch’s extraordinary stage designs for the play previously seen only once, in Berlin in 1906. Ghosts is co-produced with English Touring Theatre, which Stephen Unwin founded 20 years ago. It will also mark his swan song as Artistic Director of the Rose. Stephen Unwin has directed six productions of Ibsen, to tremendous acclaim, including an awardwinning Hedda Gabler seen at the Donmar in 1998, and The Lady from the Sea with Joely Richardson at the Rose in Spring 2012.
