Brandon Lowery holds a BFA from the University of Dayton and an MFA from Miami University in ceramics. Lowery teaches ceramics classes at Xavior University and is currently serving as the Ceramics Studios Coordinator at Rosewood.

Tracy McElfresh is the owner of Tracy’s Sewing Studio, a small independent business specializing in clothing alterations, custom creations, clothing replicas, costumes and group lessons for the beginner to the advanced. Since 2004 she has been making custom dresses and teaching the art of sewing. Tracy wrote a monthly fashion column for the Dayton Daily News as well as her own sewing blog, which received the 2018 Best Sewing Bloggers on the planet award.

Mary Patterson has worked for more than 40 years as a master goldsmith and artist. She received her BFA specializing in Crafts, from Bowling Green State University. She did graduate work at Wright State University, Miami University and Sinclair. Mary was an instructor at Riverbend for decades, taught classes at Rita Caz Jewelry Studio and continues to teach privately and to lecture on jewelry making across the state. Her goal as an instructor is to give back as much as she has been given by her past teachers and students.

Nicoletta Serenata and Giacomo Flora own the company When I Am in Rome, focused on preparing Americans for doing business in Italy. Serenata received her MA in Italian from Ohio State University, and has lectured throughout the United States at universities and businesses. She is a volunteer for the Sons and Daughters of Italy in addition to many other nonprofit organizations. Hiroko Matsumori Schierman taught Japanese to high school students for more than 20 years and has a background in the performing arts.

Nicki Strouss grew up on a horse farm in Lexington, KY and holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Columbus College of Art and Design, and is a certified yoga instructor. She has taught at Stivers School for the Arts and was previously the 2020 Artist in Residence at Rosewood Arts Centre. She has an interest in fibers, the outdoors and traveling both to learn and teach.

Amanda Wheatley works in both ceramics and textiles. She has studied fine arts with a focus in ceramics at Sinclair Community College. Amanda currently serves as Assistant Facility Coordinator at Rosewood.

Leonard Williams is best known for his vibrant watercolor scenes. His paintings have been recognized in numerous juried shows, both locally and nationally, featured in private and corporate collections across the country. His work can be seen in The New Creative Artist by well-known artist/author Nita Leland and he is a featured artist in her newest book Confident Color. In addition, his drawings appear in a series of learning and activity books for children in grades one through five produced by Children’s Historical Publishing.

Rosewood Arts Centre Canceled Classes

Rosewood Arts Centre reserves the right to cancel any class and to substitute faculty when necessary. Classes will be canceled three working days prior to the starting date when there is insufficient enrollment.

Artist Studios

Artist studios are available at Rosewood Arts Centre for artists with an active practice and a commitment to sharing their work with the Kettering community. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and reviewed as studio spaces become available. Studio spaces start at $85/month for Kettering residents. VISITOR POLICY: All participants and observers must pay open studio fees to stay longer than 30 minutes. Children under 5 years old are not permitted in open studio. Those under 16 must be supervised by an adult 21 years of age or older (no more than two children per adult). All studio patrons, including currently enrolled students, must sign in and pay fees at the Rosewood office. All open studio work-in-progress may not be left more than 30 minutes unattended.

STUDENT POLICY: Adult students currently enrolled in studio classes will receive a student pass card for four sessions of studio time. Students staying over 30 minutes after the end of class must sign in and use this pass card.

Unclaimed pieces left after 30 days will be discarded or considered a donation to Rosewood.

Drop-in fee per visit: $5/resident; $10/non-resident Open Studio Pass (10 visits): $35/resident; $60/non-resident

Darkroom – Glass

Drop-in fee per visit: $5/resident; $10/non-resident Open Studio Pass (10 visits): $35/resident; $70/non-resident Free Fridays: Open studio fees are waived for all Kettering residents. Supplies are not included in open studio fees.

LOCKER RENTAL: Lockers are available for rental on a pre-pay six-month or yearly basis. Six-month: $20/resident; $25/non-resident Yearly: $35/resident; $45/non-resident

POTTERY STUDIO: Clay fee of $20 includes 25 pounds of clay and related firing and glazes. Only clay purchased at Rosewood may be used in our studios and firings. Clay purchased at Rosewood may not be removed from the facility for work at home. You must supply your own tools. The studio is designed as a community facility and, as such, is not equipped to accommodate production pottery quantities. All open studio and private studio users are limited to three (3) cubic feet per week of kiln use. Attendance at a free pottery studio orientation is required of all first-time participants.

DARKROOM: Participants must be at least 16 years old, demonstrate previous experience in black and white darkroom processes and attend a Rosewood orientation session. Check at the Rosewood office for more information on eligibility or for the orientation schedule and to make an appointment.

GLASS STUDIO: The glass studio is available to students who wish to finish class work, have attended a class previously or have prior experience in cold or warm glass. Participants must be at least 16 years old and attend a Rosewood orientation session. Fees for kiln or torch usage are $5 respectively for up to 3 hours.

RESIDENT STATUS

To receive resident rates when attending drop-in and/or daily admission activities or registering for a program, Kettering residents or a person working in Kettering must produce identification. The following sources of I.D. are accepted as proof of residency.

Living in Kettering:

• A valid Ohio driver’s license with Kettering address. • Current utility bill with Kettering address, accompanied by a valid photo I.D.

Working in Kettering:

• Pay stub that includes City of Kettering income tax withholding.

Youth (defined as persons 17 or younger):

• School I.D.s are accepted for youth 17 and under. The Resident Card has been designed to identify resident/non-resident users. The Resident Card will provide quick identification at Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts facilities or programs and identify them to be entitled to the Kettering resident fee. The free Resident Card can be obtained at any information desk.

PAYMENT METHODS

The City will accept cash, personal checks, credit cards (Visa, MasterCard and Discover) and money orders for the payment of fees. The City can only accept debit cards that can be processed as credit cards (non-pin). The City will charge a $25 service fee for all checks not honored for any reason by the bank. Checks should be made payable to: City of Kettering.

CONFIRMATION

For Mail-in and Drop-off Registrations

Once your registration is processed, a confirmation will be emailed to you including your class enrollment status. If we were unable to place you in a class, your payment will be returned to you.

LATE REGISTRATION

Late registrations will be accepted prior to the second class meeting. After the second class meeting, no registrations will be accepted. Individuals registering late will be required to pay the total class fee.

REFUND POLICY

Our commitment is to make your experience successful. If you would like a refund, please contact us to discuss your experience. Refund requests must be made within two weeks of a registered program’s end date. For a full refund, requests must be made at least three days prior to the start of the program; otherwise a prorated refund of up to 75% will be offered. Special consideration may be given for life-altering situations and one-day experiences. If payment method was cash, check or household credit, a refund will be via City check. There will be no cash refunds. If payment method was credit or debit card, a refund will be issued on the card used for payment. This policy does not apply to facility rentals or pass purchases.

NOTICE TO PARTICIPANTS

Participants must recognize that all classes/activities of a physical nature involve some risk and by registering for a class/activity, there is an assumption of risk by the participant. The City of Kettering Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department is dedicated to providing safe facilities and equipment for all participants, as well as qualified staff. Every effort is made to ensure the safety of the participants and to provide them with first-class recreational activities, facilities and parks. In the event of a serious accident or illness, it is the policy of the City of Kettering to: • Contact the Kettering Fire Department Paramedics to perform first aid and, when necessary, recommend transport of the victim to a hospital; and • Reach the parent/guardian as soon as the situation allows.

The sooner we know about your needs and how we can support you in our programs, the more likely participation will not be delayed.
