Kevin Appleby Concert Hall Manager Our year of firsts, launched in the Autumn, continues in the Spring with two world premieres, the launch of our new Associate Artists programme, and a raft of debutantes. After four years of preparation we are within sight of the greatest show on Earth. The Olympic and Paralympic Games come to the UK this July. In the years building up to this momentous sporting occasion, Turner Sims, and Southampton itself has played a key role in showcasing cultural activity linked to London 2012. Spring sees two more significant contributions: the world premiere of composer Sally Beamish’s work Spinal Chords, one of the 20×12 commissions, and Southampton’s Musical Alphabet, a 26-hour musical cornucopia taking place at Turner Sims and locations across Southampton as part of the BBC’s Music Nation weekend. Whilst the Olympic and Paralympic Games reach their climax in 2012 the partnerships with our three new Associate Artists are only just beginning. London Sinfonietta, Tomorrow’s Warriors and the Elias String Quartet will be regular visitors over the next three years with a range of concert and outreach activity. I’m delighted that we can bring such distinguished artists to Turner Sims. Look out for details of our plans in the coming months. Alongside first time visits from pianists Gabriela Montero and Conrad Tao, Malian guitarist Vieux Farka Touré, and saxophonist Marius Neset we have a first performance: Jonathan Dove’s new work, commissioned by Turner Sims, will be performed by clarinettist Emma Johnson and 100 young recorder players at the end of March. With returning favourites including Trevor Pinnock, the Neil Cowley Trio and Lúnasa, I hope that whatever your personal best selection of events you will join us for some world class live music this Spring.

GLOBAL VOYAGES Journeys of all kinds feature in the Spring programme beginning with one of the most fateful of all time: the centenary of the sinking of the Titanic is marked by the ten-strong White Star Line-Up. Elsewhere Aly Bain and Phil Cunningham reflect on a quarter century’s worth of musical journeys whilst Lúnasa make a welcome return with their special brand of Celtic music. Cuba’s Sierra Maestra, Mali’s Vieux Farka Touré and an all-star line-up from Madagascar represent three countries with strong and distinctive musical heritage and influence. Finally explorer Paul Rose may not have visited every country featured in the series but those destinations he has reached – from Antarctica to Everest – ensure a truly global perspective.

ORCHESTRA OF THE AGE OF ENLIGHTENMENT AN OLYMPIC THREAD
Sunday 5 February – 7.30pm The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment takes centre-stage in the Cultural Olympiad celebrations, with the world premiere of Spinal Chords by Sally Beamish. Commissioned as part of New Music 20×12, the piece is set to a text by Melanie Reid, who broke her neck and back during a horse-riding accident in 2010. Melanie has since been writing an inspirational account of her life as a columnist for The Times newspaper and the piece reflects the positivity of Melanie and the immense spirit of the Paralympian movement. The rest of the programme continues the Olympic theme with references to the Movement’s home country, Greece and the coming together of nations.

Thursday 9 February – 8pm One of the greatest and most popular song cycles ever written, Schubert’s Winter’s Journey comprises 24 settings of the evocative poetry of Wilhelm Müller. A deeply moving and heartrending portrayal of suffering and loss the cycle traces the poet’s journey as he walks through a winter landscape reflecting not only on his lost love, but also on larger questions of life’s meaning. Paul Lewis and Mark Padmore’s recent recording of the work won the Gramophone Vocal Solo Award for 2010 and universal critical acclaim.

As part of their 40th anniversary celebrations, the Brodsky Quartet have put together a concert with a difference. The quartet have devised a ‘Wheel of Fortune’ comprising 40 of their favourite quartets and short pieces. Throughout the performance, either the quartet or an audience member will spin the wheel 3 to 4 times, and the quartet will then play the pieces chosen by the wheel, thus choosing a full programme in an informal and fun way. The artists will keep the music for the 40 quartets and short pieces at their feet throughout the concert – picking out each piece as it arises.
Massed forces mark the climax to Turner Sims’ contribution to Music Nation weekend. The celebrated Equivox Trio are all established international soloists in their own right. Tonight they are joined by saxophone ensemble Saxophony and percussion ensemble Supersonic for an evening of high energy music. The programme includes a new commission from Rob Buckland composed for the occasion, Orlando Gough’s Making Music Overture plus jazz standards and pop classics.

AN EVENING OF KEYBOARD MUSIC AND SCIENCE A fascinating evening of clavichord, harpsichord and piano performances as part of National Science and Engineering Week. Performed by students from the University of Southampton’s music department, works from Bach and Beethoven to Moeran and Messiaen are set in counterpoint to demonstrations of the scientific principles that determine how those instruments produce the sound they do. With insight from Matthew Wright, Senior Lecturer in Acoustics at the University’s world-renowned Institute of Sound and Vibration Research, no previous scientific knowledge will be necessary, just a love of music and an enquiring mind.

CLASSIC BUSKERS FAMILY CONCERT Michael Copley plays more than 40 woodwind instruments at incredible speeds, ranging from recorders, flutes, panpipes, crumhorns and ocarinas to a Pico Pipe and a rubber trout, accompanied by Ian Moore on a small but perfectly formed accordion. With staggering virtuosity and a generous helping of laughter, they race through an enormous variety of music from classical masterpieces by Mozart, Vivaldi, Rossini and Tchaikovksy to folk music from Italy, the Balkans and South America. TORD GUSTAVSEN ENSEMBLE The acclaimed pianist makes a welcome return with his ensemble for a night of hypnotic Scandinavian jazz. Tord has been at the forefront of the jazz scene for the past decade, developing with his trio a lyrical, often sparse sound that draws on their Nordic heritage as well as cool jazz, blues and gospel. TRIO LIBERO One of the UK’s most compelling jazz saxophonists, Andy Sheppard has been a mainstay of the European jazz scene for over twenty years. A powerful soloist with a distinctive glowing tone, he has been awarded several prizes at the British Jazz Awards, and has worked with some notable figures in contemporary jazz, including Gil Evans, Carla Bley, George Russell and Steve Swallow. Tonight he joins forces with French bassist Michel Benita, and superb Scottish drummer and composer, Sebastian Rochford.

FILM SCREENING SILENT CLASSICS Enjoy an afternoon of the very best silent comedies with live improvised musical accompaniment from renowned multi-instrumentalist Stephen Horne. Buster Keaton’s The General (1926) is considered an undisputed masterpiece of cinema. Set in the American Civil War, Buster Keaton plays Jonnie Gray, unable to enlist in the Confederate army because he is needed as a railroad engineer. His sweetheart, who thinks he’s a coward, won’t talk to him until he’s in uniform. The programme also features a selection of classic shorts including Laurel and Hardy’s silent comedy short Liberty (1929).

EMMA JOHNSON THE PIED PIPER A host of young recorder players from across Southampton join renowned clarinettist Emma Johnson and pianist John Lenehan for a special evening of music. Beginning with performances from Emma and John including repertoire by Mozart and Bernstein and Rimsky Korsakov’s Flight of the Bumble Bee the evening climaxes with the world premiere of a new work for clarinet, piano, narrator and massed recorders by composer Jonathan Dove inspired by the tale of the Pied Piper.

LOOK OUT! SOUTHAMPTON’S TITANIC STORY IN SONG Part of Southampton’s programme of centenary commemorations, Look Out! is the story of the Titanic from Southampton’s perspective, from the excitement surrounding the ship’s maiden voyage, the heartbreak at home following the disaster, and the plight of the crew who survived, particularly the lookout who first saw the iceberg. A sensitive, informative and very moving treatment of the tragedy, it unfolds in songs by Barry Wake, Brian Hooper and Jeff Henry, performed by their ten-strong ensemble White Star Line-Up.

Tuesday 17 April – 8pm One of the world’s great contemporary music ensembles Steve Reich Come Out launch their new association with Turner Sims with a programme which includes two classic minimalist works. Laurence Crane Riis Gavin Bryars’ iconic Jesus’ Blood Never Failed Me Yet takes as Graham Fitkin Touch its starting point a tape recording of an unknown homeless man and builds a hypnotically beautiful instrumental sound Graham Fitkin Sinew around it. Steve Reich’s pioneering early work Come Out builds rhythmic sound by looping short phrases of speech over Gavin Bryars Jesus’ Blood Never themselves. The programme is completed by music by two Failed Me Yet of the country’s leading composers: Laurence Crane’s Riis, a kaleidoscope of overlapping chords and Graham Fitkin’s London Sinfonietta is a energetic works, Sinew and Touch.

The entrancing Venezuelan-born pianist Gabriela Montero has been causing a stir in musical circles ever since her acclaimed debut with the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra at the tender age of eight. CONRAD TAO Found playing children’s songs on piano at the age of 18 months, Conrad Tao, now 17, made his concerto debut with the Utah Chamber Music Festival at age 8. Named a 2011 Presidential Scholar for the Arts by President Obama in a White House ceremony, his burgeoning career has already encompassed appearances with some of America’s leading orchestras. BLUE TOUCH PAPER British composer and jazz musician Colin Towns’ new band perform tracks from their debut album Stand Well Back.
