Kevin Appleby Concert Hall Manager This Autumn, in a programme which brings to Turner Sims the best of British talent alongside some outstanding international musicians, we celebrate how inspiration from a variety of sources has helped create great music. The Piano Series includes Mussorgsky’s art collection-inspired Pictures at an Exhibition, whilst Mitsuko Uchida performs the Diabelli Variations, for which Beethoven took an initial musical idea and expanded it in innumerable directions to create one of the great works for the instrument. The 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King’s I Have a Dream speech is an opportunity to revisit saxophonist Denys Baptiste’s classic work Let Freedom Ring!; by contrast Stan Tracey looks to Wales and the work of Dylan Thomas for the inspiration for his A Child’s Christmas which forms part of our seasonal offering. Pianist Joanna MacGregor heads a group of musicians exploring the melding of music and art through graphic scores, whilst in our series celebrating Benjamin Britten’s centenary Christianne Stotijn and Imogen Cooper perform the composer’s Winter Words set to texts by Thomas Hardy, and the Aurora Orchestra and narrator Samuel West offer the complete GPO Film Scores with live music and words to accompany the films. Having experienced the breadth of European jazz on recent visits to Italy and Finland, I’m delighted to be able to include new music from Kekko Fornarelli and Alexi Tuomarila’s Trio, alongside a British offering which includes pianist Dave Stapleton’s captivating new project Slowly Rolling Camera. Music from America comes in a variety of forms: from Hot Club of Cowtown’s Americana to David Murray’s full on jazz, and minimalism courtesy of the Delta Saxophone Quartet. With our Associate Artists the Elias Quartet returning to continue their survey of Beethoven’s quartets, Charpentier’s Actéon performed by a starry cast, Bombino’s energetic guitar blues from Niger and Cara Dillon’s hypnotic vocals among other treats, I hope you will be inspired to explore with us this Autumn.

PIANO SERIES Landmark works are at the heart of this year’s Piano Series presented by a stellar line-up of artists. Having focussed exclusively on Schubert in his most recent visits, Paul Lewis’ return sees him bringing to life the grand gallery depictions of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. Schubert does feature across the series, with the programmes of Piotr Anderszewski and Imogen Cooper giving an opportunity to hear two of his final three sonatas. Variations are a feature of the series too, with Brahms’ Handel Variations in Simon Trpceski’s programme and Beethoven’s Diabellis part of Mitsuko Uchida’s November recital. Finally two contrasting recitals to open and close the series. Christian Blackshaw’s first visit includes Schumann’s autobiographical Fantasie in C whilst Peter Donohoe performs the last of Prokofiev’s ‘War’ sonatas, the eighth, to mark the completion of his sonatas cycle recorded at Turner Sims.

Aurora Orchestra

ORCHESTRAS LIVE With English music at its heart our orchestral series presented in association with Orchestras Live celebrates pomp and ceremony, everyday life, and the great outdoors.

THE ENGLISH CONCERT WITH ALISON BALSOM

The Aurora Orchestra present the music which Benjamin Britten wrote to accompany the GPO Film Unit’s scores in the 1930s: illuminating features and pioneering film documentaries on everyday activities including life in a coal mine, train travel, and the postal service. The workings of the Royal Mail were not something which Handel and Purcell occupied themselves with in the 17th and 18th centuries but their royal patrons provided inspiration for some wonderful works. Trumpeter Alison Balsom and The English Concert bring these vividly to life. And another eminent instrumentalist, clarinettist Michael Collins, brings the City of London Sinfonia with a programme which includes Beethoven’s symphonic homage to the countryside and a new work from Gwilym Simcock.

JAZZ @ TURNERSIMS The language of jazz this Autumn has an international dimension with contributions from leading exponents from Europe, America and the UK.

THE IMPOSSIBLE GENTLEMEN

European perspectives come from Italian duo Roberto Cherillo and Kekko Fornarelli, and UK collective Slowly Rolling Camera – both showcasing new projects – and Finland’s Alexi Tuomarila Trio. American saxophonist David Murray makes a long overdue return to Turner Sims with his new quartet, whilst another foursome – Anglo-American group The Impossible Gentlemen – visit fresh from success at the 2013 Parliamentary Jazz Awards. There are two diverse takes on words and music: Denys Baptiste’s powerful and joyous Let Freedom Ring!, inspired by Martin Luther King’s I Have a Dream speech, is revisited and expanded 10 years after its acclaimed premiere, whilst pianist Stan Tracey’s festive concert features his recent take on Dylan Thomas’ classic A Child’s Christmas in Wales. And finally there is a meeting of friends and minds as pianist Larry Willis partners legendary South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela for what promises to be a magically intimate evening.

GLOBAL VOYAGES Musical journeys this Autumn take us across the world with evocations of England, Japan, Africa, Ireland and the Arctic. Traditional Irish folk comes from Dervish whilst Martin Carthy and Dave Swarbrick bring the English folksong alive, a fitting finale for our first ever Folksong Day. Female vocalist Cara Dillon showcases her new album as does African guitarist Bombino, making a first visit from his home in Niger. Warming treats for the festive season come courtesy of Coope, Boyes and Fraser, Freya, whilst travel writer Kari Herbert offers insights into a chillier landscape with her perspective on the life of explorers. Finally the Inner Vision Orchestra, many of whose members graced the Paralympic Games Closing Ceremony in 2012, bring a melting pot of sounds from their combined forces.

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER

CHRISTIAN BLACKSHAW Christian Blackshaw’s 2012 London cycle of Mozart’s piano sonatas was hailed by the Financial Times as one of the revelations of the past year. For his first visit to Turner Sims the distinguished British pianist opens with Mozart before presenting Schubert’s darkly introspective Sonata in A minor, completed in 1823 following its composer’s recovery from illness. The work was posthumously published in 1839, the same year in which Schumann’s impassioned Fantasie in C first appeared in print. One of the piano repertory’s key works, Schumann described its first movement to his future wife Clara Wieck as The most passionate thing I have ever composed... a deep lament for you.

A transatlantic vision of music from the 1950’s to today, this specially created project launching at Turner Sims celebrates the vitality of an inspiring area of music that rivals the best contemporary art. The programme spans classical, experimental and jazz to reflect the broad range of composers that have, and continue to, explore the medium. Innovative pianist Joanna MacGregor is at the heart of a group of the UK’s most original musicians who will perform works by George Crumb, Cathy Berberian, Fred Frith, John Cage, Wadada Leo Smith, Cornelius Cardew, Tom Phillips RA and Jennifer Walshe against the striking visual backdrop of their projected scores.

MARTIN CARTHY AND DAVE SWARBRICK For more than 40 years Martin Carthy has been one of folk music’s greatest and best loved innovators. His skill, stage presence and natural charm have won him many admirers, not only from within the folk scene, but far beyond. Dave Swarbrick first came to prominence as a young instrumental virtuoso in the Ian Campbell Folk Group, before teaming up with Martin Carthy in 1966. The result was a new era of English instrumental folk music. When they parted in 1969, Dave joined Fairport Convention and his contribution to folk and folk/rock music is legendary and well documented. Their experienced approach to their art lacks none of the fervour of their early days, and brings a maturity born of many years living with the music that is an integral part of their beings.

DECEMBER

WINTER WORDS Imogen Cooper

Christianne Stotijn

Thursday 5 December – 8pm Britten’s Thomas Hardy settings Winter Words stands as perhaps the best loved of all Britten’s song cycles and seems to encapsulate the very essence of his music. It is by turns touching, humorous and profound, with a surface simplicity constantly tugged at by unsettling undercurrents. All is not what it seems in the delightfully unconventional Charm of Lullabies, where traditional cot-side tenderness is often cast aside in favour of vexed anger and thinly-veiled threats of violence. Mussorgsky’s altogether more straightforward nursery high-jinks and autumnal Schubert complete the programme. Dutch mezzo-soprano Christianne Stotijn, a protégée of conductor Bernard Haitink and former pupil of Janet Baker, is accompanied by an outstanding artist, one of the finest pianists now playing (Daily Telegraph), Imogen Cooper.

STAN TRACEY’S A CHILD’S CHRISTMAS Inspired by Dylan Thomas’ short story, A Child’s Christmas in Wales, jazz legend Stan Tracey CBE has put pen to paper for the first time in over 10 years to compose a new suite, performed by his current quartet with the addition of Stan’s grandson, Ben Tracey, as narrator. Very much in the mould of Stan’s landmark Under Milk Wood suite from the Sixties, this was another popular story in the Tracey household for many years.

Stan really is a national treasure. In his 80’s, he’s playing better than ever. J azzwise Stan Tracey piano Clark Tracey drums Andy Cleyndert bass Simon Allen saxophones Ben Tracey narration

ELIAS QUARTET BEETHOVEN V

Tuesday 28 January – 8pm Beethoven Quartet in C minor, Op 18 No 4 Quartet in E flat, Op 74 The Harp Quartet in B flat, Op 130 Quartet in B flat, Op 133 Grosse Fuge

Concert Five of The Beethoven Project includes Op 130 with its original Grosse Fuge finale, better known as String Quartet Op 133. Beethoven sketched at least a dozen possible finale themes for Op 130 before deciding on a gigantic fugue. It became much bigger than originally intended, for after reporting in late August that the quartet would be finished in ten to twelve days, he did not complete it until about December. He was justly proud of the fugue as a work of art, and had even produced a four-hand arrangement for piano. It was this that evidently induced him to turn the string version into a self-standing work too – a Great Fugue, Op 133. The Elias Quartet’s Beethoven Quartets cycle is supported by the Friends of Turner Sims

SLOWLY ROLLING CAMERA Slowly Rolling Camera is a new project bringing together some of the leading musicians on the British jazz scene. Drawing on their own interests and a diverse range of influences, the result is music that has distinct echoes of the ‘invisible soundtracks’ of UK progressives Cinematic Orchestra and Portishead as well as the polychrome textures of maverick Scandinavian artists Sigur Ros.
