“ Vintage decor and clothing items are essential in adding originality and authenticity to your day - to pull off the vintage look use vintage china teacups and cakestands, antique items, borrowed items, hand me downs, and vintage clothing. It is all about the feel of the day so be sure to add some fun elements to your day - a vintage photobooth or an old typewriter, garden games, a cake table filled yummy treats.” - Pearl, from Pearl & Godiva Beautiful Vintage Inspirations www.pearlandgodiva.com

INTRODUCTION Whether you are doing a full on vintage themed wedding or just having a few quirky elements, adding a touch of vintage can add a touch of class and a touch of fun to your wedding day celebration.
Hiring in items such as mis-matched china, vintage photo booths, candy floss machines as well as using vintage car companies will enhance the theme. What ever you do, have fun and enjoy!
There are great vintage dress shops, however, women were quite slight in days of old, so unless you are a size 6 - 10 (UK) you may need to be more 驶creative始 in achieving a vintage look. A dress maker can use a vintage pattern and adjust it to your size. Lots of designers are using vintage gown influences in their designs too.
Thanks to all the great contributors to this guide especially photographer Mike Patterson and Pearl & Godiva for her fabulous styling. To see a really cool video from one of the Pearl & Godiva photo shoots featured in this guide click here! (Video by Best Day Productions).

WEDDINGS TIPS Die hard vintage or just a few vintage touches?
It’s important to decide on which era you wish to take your vintage influence from. The 1920s, 1950’s and 1960’s all have very different vintage qualities.
CHOOSING YOUR ERA Vintage, in wedding terms, usually refers to the Art Nouveau period to any era in the 20th century, anything pre this is usually a particular themed wedding such as Medieval, Victorian, etc.
Hire an old fashioned photobooth and set up a guestbook table beside it. Guests can take fun photos of themselves enjoying your wedding and stick them in beside their messages to you. r riter font fo w e p y T n a ps as Use Americ nd old stam a y r e n o ti es of your sta the envelop n o n o ti a r o dec red invites. hand delive

1920S! The 1920’s were hugely influenced by the wedding of the Queen Mother. It was the time of the Charleston, finger-wave and pin-curled hair-dos, t-strap shoes, low waistlines, high buttoned boots, jazz, fringed dresses, bobs, poe hats and side bows.
GET THE LOOK HAIR Pin curls, finger waves, bobs and smooth pinned hair. Short hair was the trend but you can get a 1920’ hair do without cutting off your luscious locks. MAKE UP 1920’s make up as we see it in the movies and in photos was very heavy to strongly accent eyebrows, lips and lashes in the black and white photos. With todays photography and make up you don’t have to go so heavy to achieve the look.
Queen Elizabeth I on her wedding day
1920’S FASHION The Queen Mother got married in the 1920’s and her wedding hugely influenced the trends of the time. T-strap shoes, low waistlines, high buttoned boots, fringed dresses, poe hats, side bows were very much in. Men can wear trilbies (fedoras) and pinstrip suits Bugsy Malone style!

1920S! MEMORIES Try to find a videographer that will convert some of your video to black and white grainy style videos, silent movie style! Most professional photographers can convert your photos into black and white and sepia photos. TRANSPORT There are lots of wedding car companies that have well restored 1920’s vintage cars. MUSIC Jazz and waltzing were both in in the 1920’s. It would be fun to have your evening entertainment area converted into a 1920’s jazz club with round tables, table lamps and cocktail waitresses.
1930S & 40S ! The 1930’s Hollywood style glamour, black tie, Art Deco, Cary Grant, Katherine Hepburn, nylon stockings, lingerie, long gloves, hats with nets, big band swing music, white tuxes, tails and top hats.
GET THE LOOK 1930’S & 1940’S FASHION
Ginger Rogers was an icon during the 1930s
STATIONERY Display 1930's-era sophistication with heavy, cream-coloured paper and deco-style type fonts which can be further accented with period clip art. MUSIC Fred Astaire and Ginger Rodgers were icons, tapping and waltzing across the big silver screens, so a big band sound is what you need.
Post WWI saw the introduction of man made fibres such as rayon, nylon and viscose which gave a whole new lease of life to fashion design. Women’s dresses became sleek and satiny. Butterfly sleeves and banjo sleeves, exaggerated shoulders aided by shoulder pads and halter necks appeared for the first time. Men wore tuxes - white dinner jackets were popular. Most wedding dresses in the 1930s were lightweight, long and sleek, form fitting and gently draping made from silk, lace, satin and crepe. The 1940’s was dominated by WWII, fashion was similar to the 1930’s. Army uniforms became the norm for men to be seen wearing, for a quick ‘I do’ in a hanger before heading off to war.

HAIR Women’s haircuts softened and became less harsh than the 1920s. Reese Witherspoon and Ginger Rodgers pictured here, both show the typical 1930s do. MEMORIES Water for Elephants is based in the 1930s. If you liked the movie you could introduce some of the circus elements to your theme such as a pink candy striped candy floss stand or a cigarette vendor styled waitress! HONEYMOONS Suntans became popular for the first time and honeymoons to the Med and Bahamas were part of the lifestyle of the rich and famous.
1950S ! The 1950s was the decade of iconic weddings Grace Kelly, JFK, Liz Taylor (x2!), Audrey Hepburn, and Marilyn Monroe. It was also the era of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Elvis, James Dean so two very different styles to choose from!
Elizabeth Taylor’s first wedding in 1950
GET THE LOOK 1950’S FASHION Ballet length skirts and Sabrina necklines, wasp sized waists and short or cathedral length veils and morning suits for the guys, are all perfect for a 1950’s iconic wedding.
