Type Hierarchy
Having decided that the design direction was to be of a specific style and look, I started to look into the specific information hierarchy of the poster and what information would need to be there.

Type Choices
I started to look into typefaces to use for my poster. I wanted to use a variety of typefaces that would compliment each other with a letter press style aesthetic.
Bad Type Choice The typefaces here were the best of a bad lot. I think some of these had some potential but they look a bit too finished and don’t particularly compliment each other at all. In order to get around this I feel I will have to create my own letterforms in order to make them compliment eachother.
Making Type
I started making characters by using grid paper. I had reference imagery from my research that helped me stylise each character. Any other characters were created in illustrator. I could not spend too much time making the
Drawing Type Drawing the typefaces was quite an organic experience that I had not really had since first year. Drawing the type and instantly experimenting with letterforms was not something I had done for a long time. Some of the letterforms were successful from the get go, others start to form in a disjointed way which I would evaluate in illustrator, but in all I was able to get what I needed very quickly, without the use of a computer. Just a pen, paper and some reference images.
Final Type
THe final display type came out really well after making the letterforms I had to experiment with the sizes in order to get a legible flow to the words. I laid the type out how thumbnailed it and got ready to receive Joel’s illustrations.
Additional Type
I provided additional type for the event information using a typeface called Brooklyn. The typeface is from the village website, which is a collection of type foundaries exhibiting under one name. The Brooklyn typefae had that square independent DIY look, which nicely added a clunky aspect to the typography. It turned out looking like signage which was a happy accident, but perhaps a motivation of choosing the typeface.
Joel’s Tools
While I was doing the typography Joel illustrated the tools to which we could put the as an overlay over the typography. Joel laid the tools out to work with my type, and I then worked with his illustrations to add the additional type. The process was very fluid, and is one of our better processes.
Screen Printing
We screenprinted the posters, using a red and black ink.
