RESILIENT SOCIAL HOUSING IN RED HOOK Red Hook, New York City, USA

Streetscape Territories design studio 2018 Master Dissertation Project with Kris Scheerlinck as an academic promoter The primary focus of this project is on affordable housing in Red Hook which is a problem of last years. The prediction is that Red Hook will double its population in following ten years. A big part of all inhabitants is single mothers who are currently living mostly in insufficient NYCHA housing project. Together with the relatively young population, it frames my target group. Red Hook is specific because of its location on the waterfront and mainly with the topography not much higher than sea level. This fact puts the neighbourhood in the problematic position of everlasting floods danger. It was one of the leading influencers of the housing proposal.

4

We can already see signs of gentrification in the northwest area, where art community is allocated, and new projects of luxury apartments are built. Similar projects do not put a sufficient number of affordable housing units on the market which are demanding in the area. The strategy of my proposal is to show three ways of dealing with housing problem in such a specific area as Red Hook. Each of which is using different starting points for design (reuse of the vacant building, an extension of existing building and empty plot). I reconsider a proposal of Harvey Wiley Corbett who saw NYC as the city of modern Venice with arcaded sidewalks above the existing street grade. He aimed to separate people from traffic, and I see this idea as very contemporary in today’s NYC. Even though I believe that the ground is where people belong and we should give them the opportunity to use it with no spatial restriction I see that current situation of rising sea level can force us to shape public domain in a different way of elevated sidewalks with water instead of cars underneath.

THE GALLERY OF WEST BOHEMIA Mezi kolejemi, Pilsen, Czech Republic Studio Mádr 2014 Bachelor Degree Project The project aims to transform underused plot near the city centre of Pilsen. The site is very long and narrow with two train lines acting as boundaries. The only access there is a pedestrian pathway which crosses the plot. My task was to find the right purpose for the plot and design it.

12

I decided on a new building of West Bohemian Gallery. This institution is based in Pilsen, and in 2009 there was an architectural competition on a nearby plot for its new building. The winning proposal was not realized, so I took a chance to propose a different plot with different design respecting all demands of the competition. My design respects the path which slices the plot in the middle - it is the main entrance point, and adding extra access point which is located on the very east part of the plot. I designed there park which can be used as an exhibition space for sculptures. Westside is dedicated to the body of the gallery. The gallery itself is designed as dynamic triangular form. Dynamics of it goes from the west to the east. Entrance to the gallery has a little different shape which supports dynamics. The roof has a red colour to highlight this building from surroundings and to create a landmark. A philosophy of one road makes interior - it means that you needn‘t turn anywhere, go straight on through exposition so that you can experience it without any confusion. The interior also has a natural resource of light - skylights in the roof.

SUMMER UNDER THE VIADUCT

Prvního pluku, Prague, Czech Republic CCEA MOBA 2016 The project won Extraordinary prize of the Karlín group for a committed approach to rescue and creation of exceptional public space in Czech Architecture Award 2017 Summer Under the Viaduct (Léto pod viaduktem) changes illegal parking lot under the Negrelli Viaduct into a chill-out zone. There are many leisure time activities ready to use: beach volleyball, table tennis, trampoline for children, darts, outdoor fitness, etc. Refreshment is provided by “Divoké matky” organization. They are serving drinks and snacks in their bistro and managing the cultural program. The project lasted from June 2016 to October 2016.

18

This project is another intervention from the series under the umbrella of the project called Negrelli Viaduct – Opportunity for the creative city. It is organized by CCEA to experiment on the fields of architecture, art, and public interest. Its goal is to draw attention to the potential of the structure of the viaduct and test the possibilities of its inclusion in the city life. The Negrelli Viaduct is the second oldest bridge in Prague (after the Charles Bridge) and till 1920 also the longest bridge made of stone in Europe. It is unique in many other ways; however, today situation is not a testament to its potential and history. It is also listed as a cultural heritage. Complex technical reconstruction is in progress (2017– 2020) and this project wants to sparkle a discussion about the possible creative use of the spaces under and around the viaduct. MY CONTRIBUTION My job was to design deployment and disposition of all facilities under the viaduct and prepare whole production documentation. It contains visualizations, detailed drawings of facilities, the overall situation, etc. I was also working on the building site as a worker and as the main supervisor of the whole project.

UNDERSTANDING THE COLLECTIVENESS OF NEIGHBORHOOD CENTERS OF BARRIO UJ’E LHAVOS AND BARRIO AMISTAD Filadelfia, Paraguay

Teamwork with Fien Coysman, Alcides Ivan Cardozo, Mara Da Silva International workshop Interactive Collective Spaces in the El Chaco Communities with Yves Schoonjans, Jeroen Nys and Juan Cristaldo as academic promoters 2017

24

The segregated town of Filadelfia in El Chaco, Paraguay is strictly dividing into the districts according to the different cultural background. The German Mennonites, the founders of the city, occupy most of the residential area and farming industry around the city. In recent years Spanish speaking Paraguayans (Latinos), Bolivians, Brazilians and different indigenous groups are immigrating to the city creating a new balance in population composition. The new immigrants are living mainly on the outskirts of appointed town grouped in distinct neighbourhoods (barrios) by societal background (Latino’s, Guarani, Nivaclé, Enhlet). The spatial and social division was starting point for our research. We chose two completely different barrios for further investigation and comparison – Uj’e Lhavos (Nivaclé neighbourhood) and Amistad (Latino neighbourhood). During our visit in Filadelfia, we spent some time in each of the studied neighbourhoods to understand the meaning of collectiveness there. We were observing, interacting with local people and actively participated in public space. It is striking that although the societal context of the two communities is very different, the design and realisation of the physical space of the Barrio centre is constructed in a very similar way. Our research is concentrating on those neighbourhood-nuclei of public spaces investigating the use and appropriation of the public space in neighbourhood centre comparatively. We investigated the meaning of collectiveness in settled areas, more specifically in the two neighbourhood centres (Uj’e Lhavos, Amistad). Inhabitants of both share some similar patterns in the behaviour of approaching collective space. However, at the same time, they have a very different cultural background which is crucial to understand their use of space.

BRU.S.L.XL

Molenbeek, Brussels, Belgium Teamwork with Britt Warnez, Giacomo Ambrosini and the rest of the design studio BRU.S.L.XL design studio 2017 Transitional project from today to 2040 on the Weststation, Brussels. The goal was to plan and design 90k square metres in the Brussel‘s quarter Molenbeek. This future development contains mostly housing but also offices and other services. Key issues of the site are social diversity, a proximity of the rail tracks and future Line 28 which will connect the whole Brussels with a bike lane.

28

I was part of the team which was densifying plot parallel to the railway track. Our goal was to bring most of the square meters to our site to save the other sites for parks and low-density buildings. A key element for us was Line 28 which we strongly incorporate to our design. We raise it for 6 m to provide acoustical comfort for the housing and also create productive spaces underneath. Next, to the housing, we are also providing pool, nursery or container park. Different types of housing (emergency, social, normal) developed on our site ensure social balance and try to avoid gentrification. One of the key issues of this design studio was to present the whole project in an easy and understandable way. We decided to prepare a huge model of the whole area which contains our proposals and summarizing video. It is worth to mention that this project is not a work of one person but work of the whole team which contained 15 students.

HEMPIRE Dampoort, Gent, Belgium Teamwork with Lisbeth Decloedt, Julie Pont, Senne Van Buggenhout, Lisa Van de Casteele Climate Design & Sustainability design studio 2017 This project was developed in a technical subject called Climate design & Sustainability. The aim was to design a self-sufficient building within eco-village (design of it was also part of the assignment). The eco-village contains six teams, each with its building design and assigned topic (materials, space, mobility, nature/food, energy, water). We developed an overall plan together and decided that we will act as one village to cooperate. Each team had one aspect of the village to care about.

32

Our team has assigned topic of materials; thus we decided to produce building/insulating material for the whole village at the beginning and for the whole of Ghent afterwards. We have done some in-depth research, and we agreed on a quite young material called hempcrete. It is made from industrial hemp, and it is both insulating and self-bearing material. Industrial hemp converts CO2 to biomass through the process of photosynthesis. The amount of CO2 uptake is higher for industrial hemp than for trees. Hemp can be used as a bio sanitation tool for brownfields such as the our site. The crop can clean up the polluting metals in the ground. Hempcrete is a fairly unknown building material in Belgium. People immediately think of the drug-related use of hemp. We want to show them the ecological possibilities of the crop in educational facility.
