I can't believe It's already August now—Time sure does fly when you're having fun. The Rotary world celebrates Membership and New Club Development throughout the month of August. It's only natural that we focus on membership at the start of the Rotary year. With the Global Pandemic still having an impact on our lives, we are reminded that we live in a world that is continuously changing, and Rotaract reflects that reality.

WE MUST BE WILLING TO LISTEN AND CHANGE, RELYING ON OUR FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES OF LEADERSHIP, DIVERSITY, INTEGRITY, ADAPTABILITY, AND LEARNING AT ALL TIMES. WE WILL ALWAYS BE PREPARED TO LEAD IF WE EMBODY THESE PRINCIPLES AND APPLY THE FOUR-WAY TEST TO ALL PARTS OF OUR LIFE. Let's get our new Rotaractors engaged because an engaged Rotaractor is a lifelong value. It's important to remember that keeping existing members

engaged in our clubs is just as important as getting new ones. Let us cherish one another's ideas and opinions, and whenever possible, let our members shine.

We have started our official visits. During these visits and looking at all the work and plans that the clubs are doing, I constantly felt how awesome our District is! I am excited to meet more Rotaractors, so I would like to invite us to your meetings.

AUGUST IS MEMBERSHIP & NEW CLUB DEVELOPMENT MONTH

HOW TO ENGAGE PROSPECTIVE MEMBERS 1. Ask potential members about their ideas, passions, and ideal service projects. See how their interests and strengths can benefit your club.

2. Connect on a personal level. Instead of saying, “You need to join,” try, “Rotaract is amazing, and I think you might like it because ...”

3. When potential members express an interest in Rotaract, help them find the right fit. Discuss what they want to accomplish or learn, don’t push them to join your club; maybe a different club is the right fit for them.

HOW TO ENGAGE NEW MEMBERS 1. Invite new members to participate in meetings, activities, and other events, and see what interests them.

2. Identify established members who would be great connections and make introductions for mentorship.

3. When new members join your club, connect with them and find out what inspires them.

ENHANCE YOUR CLUB’S CULTURE

4. Ask your members to share their ideas. Show them RESPECT, encourage them to make suggestions, and encourage others to take them seriously.

There’s a disconnect between how we see ourselves and how we’re seen by others. We need to change that perception to attract youth.

5. Have monthly one-on-one talks on atleast for first six months on how their Rotaract experience is going and how they are feeling.

Or dissatisfied or just complacent? Maybe your club needs to be a bit more like the leaders you want to attract and engage. You may need to make changes.

UPDATES FROM DISTRICT TEAM 2021-22 Real-time mask monitoring collaborating with UNICEF UNICEF Nepal is working on real-time mask-wearing behavior monitoring across the country to see the use of masks and adapt our strategy or negotiation with the MOHP, municipality, and other stakeholders. We organized a session for Rotaractors on how they can contribute to this open collaboration platform facilitated

GORDON R. MCINALLY OF SCOTLAND SELECTED TO BE 2023-24 ROTARY INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT Gordon R. McInally, a member of the Rotary Club of South Queensferry, Lothian, Scotland, is the selection of the Nominating Committee for President of Rotary International for 2023-24. He will be declared the president-nominee on 1 October if no challenging candidates have been suggested.

McInally lauded Rotary’s ability to adapt technologically during the COVID19 pandemic, saying the approach should continue and be combined with the best of our past practices as Rotary seeks to grow and increase engagement.

“We have learned there is a willingness within communities to care for one another,” he says, “and we must ensure that we encourage people who have recently embraced the concept of volunteering to join us to allow them to continue giving service.”

McInally says that senior leaders’ ability to communicate directly with club members online will be one positive legacy of the changes Rotary has had to make. But, he adds, “face-to-face meetings remain important, as they encourage greater interaction.”

The best way to increase membership is engagement, according to McInally.

To better support clubs, he says, Rotary International, regional leaders, and district teams all need to engage with them. Engagement through social media will reinforce Rotary’s brand and showcase the opportunities that come with it. And, he says, engagement with governments, corporations, and other organizations will lead to meaningful partnerships.

With better engagement, McInally says, “We will grow Rotary both by way of membership and in our ability to provide meaningful service.”

He adds, “Membership is the lifeblood of our organization. I would encourage the use of the flexibility now available to establish new-style clubs that would appeal to a different demographic.”

McInally, a graduate of dental surgery at the University of Dundee, owned and operated his own dental practice in Edinburgh. He was the chair of the British Paedodontic Society and has held various academic positions. He has also served as a Presbytery elder, chair of Queensferry Parish Congregational Board, and commissioner to the church’s general assembly.

A Rotary member since 1984, McInally has been president and vice president of Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland. He has also served Rotary International as a director and as a member or chair of several committees. He is currently an adviser to the 2022 Houston Convention Committee and vice-chair of the Operations Review Committee.

McInally and his wife, Heather, are Major Donors and Benefactors of The Rotary Foundation. They are also members of the Bequest Society.
