My Rotary Journey By Limuel S. Celebria, a member of the Rotary Club of Jaro IIoilo City, is a journalist. He honed his skills as correspondent of Ang Pahayagang MALAYA and TODAY in the 80s and 90s. At the same time, he was editor of several local newspapers including Western Visayas Daily Times and The Daily Guardian. Today he is engaged in Public Relations and Publicity programs as a freelance practitioner while writing an occasional column for the Guardian. I became a member of a Rotary club about 15 years ago. A good friend had just been elected president of the club and I attended his induction into office. As the night and the ceremonies proceeded, my name was suddenly called and I was asked to join some people who were in standing in front. To my great surprise moments later, my friend had put a pin on my collar and I was being sworn into something. I had become a baby Rotarian. Over the course of that year, I attended some club meetings where they talked about projects and activities. I didn’t take part in the discussions, however. I came for the fellowship and the beer. When the year of my Rotary initiation ended, there came a great conundrum: Who’s gonna be president next year? It seems everybody had already become president and no one wanted the post. Without much ado, they all agreed, give it to the new guy! Who? You! Me? Yes, you! Kaya mo na! (You can do it!) They told me to attend the PETS which, luckily for me, was being held at Amigo Terrace Hotel since the District Governor at the time was the late Benjamin “Boy” Jarantilla of RC Jaro Iloilo City. During DG Boy’s term every Rotarian was being asked to Lend a Hand. Apart from the interclub sportsfest and family day organized by the council of presidents and held at the Iloilo Sports Complex, I remember little about my time as club president. I didn’t know what to do nor what was expected of me. I had no project. We met irregularly and listlessly. I was presiding over a club in its throes. Perhaps the only thing that marked my presidential year was that I spent a good amount from my own personal fund for my induction and to pay for the fees of delinquent members so that the club will not be suspended by Rotary International. When the club was terminated a few years later, I also thought that was the end of my Rotary experience. But a fellow club member, a dyed-in-the-wool Rotarian, went to another club. He asked me to join him. When he became president of the club, I became his secretary and some of our fellows in the old club followed.

I don’t exactly know at which point I actually began considering myself a Rotarian and not just a member of Rotary club. But I do know it is because of a combination of factors: the warmth of our fellowships; the projects that provide us with opportunities to help the disadvantaged; the chance to expand one’s horizons and make new friends through the various conventions and seminars that I have had the chance to attend.

It is an edifying experience. But when I see many others for whom Rotary has become a way of life, I realize my journey still has a long way to go.

R.I. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

JULY 2016

Profile

Today, we look ahead toward a Rotary year that may one day be known as the greatest in our history: the year that sees the world’s last case of polio. Wild poliovirus caused only 74 cases of polio in 2015, all of them in Afghanistan and Pakistan. As we continue to work tirelessly toward our goal of eradication, we must also look beyond it: preparing to leverage our success into even greater successes to come. It is tremendously important to Rotary’s future that our role in the eradication of polio be recognized. The more we are known for what we’ve achieved, the more we’ll be able to attract the partners, the funding, and, most important, the members to achieve even more. We’re working hard at RI headquarters to be sure that Rotary gets that recognition. But it can’t all happen in Evanston. We need you to get the word out through your clubs and in your communities about what Rotary is and what we do. We need to be sure that our clubs are ready for the moment when polio is finally eradicated – so that when people who want to do good see that Rotary is a place where they can change the world, every Rotary club is ready to give them that opportunity. We know that if we want to see Rotary Serving Humanity even better in the years ahead, we’ll need more willing hands, more caring hearts, and more bright minds to move our work forward. We’ll need clubs that are flexible, so that Rotary service will be attractive to younger members, recent retirees, and working people. We’ll need to

seek out new partnerships, opening ourselves more to collaborative relationships with other organizations. Looking ahead, we also see a clear need to prioritize continuity in our leadership. We in Rotary are all playing on the same team, working toward the same goals. If we want to reach those goals together, we all have to move in the same direction – together. Every day that you serve in Rotary, you have the opportunity to change lives. Everything you do matters; every good work makes the world better for us all. In this new Rotary year, we all have a new chance to change the world for the better, through Rotary Serving Humanity.

He was Tennessee Young Man of the Year in 1970; Engineer of the Year, 1986; Volunteer Fundraiser of the Year, 1992; and Tennessee Community Organizations Volunteer of the Year, 2009. He is a recipient of the Boy Scouts Silver Beaver Award and the Arthritis Foundation Circle of Hope Award. In 2013, the White House recognized him as a Champion of Change. Germ joined Rotary in 1976 and has served Rotary as vice president, director, Foundation trustee and vice chair, aide to the Foundation trustee chair, chair of Rotary’s US$200 Million Challenge, RI Board Executive Committee member, RI president’s aide, Council on Legislation representative and chair, membership zone coordinator, chair of numerous committees, area coordinator, RI training leader, and district governor. Germ has received RI’s Service Above Self Award and The Rotary Foundation’s Citation for Meritorious Service and Distinguished Service Award. He and his wife, Judy, are Benefactors and members of the Arch Klumph Society of The Rotary Foundation. They have four children and six grandchildren.

GOVERNOR’S MESSAGE

D3850 Serving Humanity Efficient, Stronger & Bolder

O

ver the past several months, there have been radical changes in my routines. Rotary has become my life. I greet each day with enthusiasm thinking of avenues to help the humanity and leave a global impact. I have always abided by the spirit of Rotary’s motto – Service Above Self. And it has always been my dream to see every Rotarian burning with passion in service. For the past two months, I have been imploring our various clubs to submit vital information not only about current officers and directors but also about each club’s roster of members. I wanted each of our district officers to be able to get in touch directly with their counterparts at the club level. I believe this would result to more vibrant interaction between the District Team and the clubs and, hopefully, the smoother implementation of more programs and projects. For those clubs who were unable to fill up their list of directors previously, please do so at the earliest possible opportunity. On the other hand, your clubs may have recently received email from District Secretary John Michael Ng requesting you to update or make the necessary corrections in your membership roster online. The current Club President, Secretary, and Membership chair are allowed to edit the club’s membership data by accessing the club record at rotary.org. At the same time, Doc Chris Sorongon, appointed District Executive Officer, is at the helm of addressing all external concerns. His eloquence in communication is a great aid for us as he ensures immediate action to all our external problems. For those still uncomfortable with going on-line, clubs may appoint an internet officer

who need not be a member of the club. You may also seek assistance from District Governor’s staff who selflessly dedicate themselves to help us clean up the district’s registration and relevant data with Rotary International. Another goal this year is to empower clubs to make use of District and Global grants and to have international partners for help in club projects. Rotary is such a big international organization. Out there somewhere, there is a club waiting and willing to help fund your project or simply be a partner in serving humanity. With The Rotary Foundation (TRF) celebrating its centennial year in 2017, there is much emphasis in giving and sharing and clubs can take this opportunity to promote projects for funding from donors overseas. Allow your district team to assist you in such undertakings. Finally, our third emphasis this year, is to maximize potentials of the young as our partners in service to humanity. Thus, we are encouraging clubs to put up Rotaract and Interact clubs. For those clubs which have already established such, please further empower your youth partners by supporting their activities and projects. We are looking ahead to a stronger relationship of clubs with our youth partners as they will be the ones to continue the legacy that we started. The past couple of months have been quite hectic for me. I have my own business to attend to, family to take care of, advocacies to push, and many other things to consider but I will never get tired of enjoying the opportunities to speak, attending inductions and visiting the different clubs in the district. With the passion I have as Rotarian, work, play and service come together harmoniously.

RONNIE GABALDA DISTRICT GOVERNOR, RY 2016-17 DISTRICT 3850, RC ILOILO SOUTH Born in Bacolod City, our District Governor now resides in Iloilo after marrying Sanda Villanueva. They are blessed with 4 sons, Elijah (18 y.o.), Ethan (16 y.o.), Ewan (14 y.o.) & Emmett John (4 y.o.). Ronnie, together with Sanda, helps manage the family’s 41-year-old appliance, furniture and air condition business, NIG Marketing Corporation, now with 24 branches in Panay and Negros Islands. Ronnie took his Elementary and High School education at La Salle Bacolod Integrated School. In 1989, he graduated at the University of the Philippines Diliman Campus with a degree of Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. He joined the Rotary Club of Iloilo South in October 1998. In June 2000, Ronnie became Club President under the RI Presidency of Frank Devlyn, with PDG Henz Reyes leading our District. In RY 2006-2007, PDG Toto Cua Locsin appointed Ronnie as his District Secretary and Awards Chair. While Ronnie has served Rotary in various capacities, his passion for taking pictures during Club and District events gained him Rotarian friends from all over. He has not missed a single District conference. He has also attended Rotary Zone Institutes and International Conventions. Believing in the Rotary Foundation, Ronnie became a multiple Paul Harris Fellow and is a member of the Paul Harris Society. Outside of Rotary, Ronnie is also the current Vice Chairman of the Philippine Red Cross – Iloilo Chapter. Ronnie and Sanda are also vice chair and couple moderator of Educhild, a non-profit organization formed by parents to help other parents in the delicate task of parenting and rearing a family.

R.I. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

AUGUST 2016

JOHN F. GERM PRESIDENT 2016-17 ROTARY CLUB OF CHATTANOOGA TENNESSEE, USA

Forty years ago, a man named George Campbell, the owner of the company I worked for, invited me to join Rotary. Back then, that was a common practice in the United States. Your boss invited you to join Rotary because he thought it would be good for business and good for the community, and you said yes. It’s not surprising that our membership surged during that period.

their meeting times and expand their pool of prospective members. Clubs have more flexibility now to respond to the needs of their members and to clear away as many barriers to membership as they can. But there’s one barrier to membership that only you can remove, one thing that every prospective member needs to become a Rotarian: an invitation to join a Rotary club.

George warned me not to use Rotary as an excuse to slack off at work. Even so, I always had time to attend lunch meetings and serve on committees. I never had to worry that taking a long lunch once a week would hurt my advancement, or what my boss would think about the occasional Rotary phone call at work.

Whenever I tell a group of Rotarians that we need more willing hands, more caring hearts, and more bright minds to move our work forward, everyone applauds. But those hands, hearts, and minds won’t magically appear in our clubs. We have to ask them to join. And an invitation to Rotary is something that only you can give. An invitation is a gift. It’s saying to someone, “I think you have the skills, the talent, and the character to make our community better, and I want you to join me in doing that.”

Today, things are different. Companies are less generous about time, and not every manager looks favorably on community service. It’s hard to enjoy a Rotary meeting when you’ve got emails piling up on your phone. It’s harder than ever to balance work with Rotary – and the model that gave us so much growth a few decades ago is part of what’s holding back our growth now. That’s why the recent Council on Legislation adopted some innovative measures that allow clubs to vary

I’m the president of Rotary International, but the only club I can invite someone to join is the Rotary Club of Chattanooga, Tenn. I can’t make your club or your community stronger. Only you can do that – by inviting the qualified people you know to join you in Rotary Serving Humanity. July - august 2016

COVER STORY

Serving Humanity

L

ast June, tragedies visited our brethren in Zamboanga City, Pagadian City, Zamboanga Del Sur and Isabela City in Basilan with hundreds of families losing their homes to raging fires. In Sta. Catalina Village, Zamboanga City, over 600 houses were burned to the ground. The victims, mostly informal settlers, were unable to save anything from the fire as most of them were in the mosque when the fire broke out. They were placed in three evacuation camps by the local government. Earlier, some 300 families also lost their homes to a fire in Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur. In Isabela City last June 18, some 500 families or around 2,000 persons lost their homes to a fire which came at the time of Ramadan. In the face of such dire difficulties for our fellowmen, our Rotary Clubs in the area moved quickly providing food, clothing,

medicine and other forms of assistance to the victims. Not surprisingly, other clubs from District 3850 have also responded gracefully digging into their pockets and drawing deeply from the wellspring of compassion that bubbles in every Rotarian’s heart. To date, the various clubs in the district have donated substantial sums to help alleviate the plight of the fire victims. Help continues to arrive.

minds to move our work forward.”

Such is the meaning of service, of Rotary Serving Humanity, which is no less the theme of this Rotary Year 2016-2017.

We proudly note, for example, that RI’s continuing effort to eradicate polio wherever it may be found in the world started in the Philippines in 1979. In that year, Rotary funded the immunization of six million children with the oral polio vaccine. The disease has since been banished from this country, in all of Africa last year, and this year, according to Germ, the whole world may finally get rid of the wild polio virus. Humanity may have to thank Rotary for it.

The theme is a classic, a return to basics. After all, as RI President John Germ noted: Rotary’s founder, Paul Harris himself believed that serving humanity is “the most worthwhile thing a person can do.” And being a part of Rotary is a “great opportunity” to make that happen. He added: “We need more willing hands, more caring hearts, and more bright

Being part of Rotary indeed is being part of a greater force for good in this world, of becoming not just a contributor but also an impetus, a harbinger for positive change especially in this country where the Rotary movement is strong with over 830 clubs with 21,934 members nationwide.

Training Leaders ALL STAR Presidents-Elect and Assistant Governors and Training Seminar Garden Orchid Hotel | Badjao Hall 1 & 2 Function Room | 3rd Floor, Garden Wing | March 2, 2016 | Wednesday 8:00 am to 6:30 pm

R

As it has always been in Rotary, it is the position that seeks the man.

We all know the feeling. Nobody wants to be president. Being president of a Rotary club is such a daunting (if not expensive) challenge. The year long list of projects and activities to undertake, the endless meetings to preside over and the out of pocket expenses that come along are enough to scare the shit out of the staunchest humanitarian from becoming club president.

For this, a lot of credit must go to Rotary’s institutional foresight, anticipating in particular the regular turnover of club leaders. Annually, the districts hold rolebased seminars – the President Elect Training Seminar (PETS) for incoming presidents and District Training Assemblies (DISTAS) for directors and officers. And then there is the themebased seminars (they’re now called SEAMLESS Seminars for Public Image, TRF, etc.)

ecently, a good friend was inducted into office as president of one of the more prestigious Rotary clubs in Iloilo City. To say that he was reluctant to take the post would be a pure understatement. “For years,” he told me, “I played dodge ball with the position. I raised all kinds of excuses until I ran out of alibis.”

So much so that each club is forced every now and then to recycle former presidents.

14

Still, we have never lacked for leaders. We have more than enough stouthearted men ready to fill in the occasional gaps at the top. Rotary’s continued vibrancy in these parts attests to that.

Such activities provide our club leaders

July - august 2016

more than ample preparation for the tasks they face and the challenges they will meet during their incumbency. Such activities, too, provide opportunities for everyone to meet fellow Rotarians in the district, create bonds of fellowship, and establish support mechanisms. For this year’s presidential batch, now called All-Star Presidents, the PETS was held last March 2, 2016 in Zamboanga. The DISTAS were held in a series combining several of the 11 zones in the district: Zone 1, 2, 3 was held at Sarabia Manor Hotel in Iloilo City last April 4, 2016; The DISTAS Zone 4 was held at the Grand Gazebo in Roxas City, Capiz; Zones 5, 6, 7 held April 29, 30 at O Hotel, Bacolod City; Zones 8, 9 held April 9 at Ariana Hotel in Dipolog City and Zones 20, 11 held June 9 at Garden Orchid Hotel, Zamboanga City.

Unleashing youthful passions Members of the Interact Club of Ferndale International School in Zamboanga city with fellow Mindanao Rotaractors pose with grandma during the outreach program at Asilo de Molo.

“I

t was an unforgettable experience,” declared Meriel Delorico, President of the Rotaract Club of Hercor College in Roxas City, Capiz. “The organizers welcomed us with a smile. We met new friends and became close. The speakers were alive and they are really interesting with what they’ve shared.”

“The topics that the speakers talked about were very enriching and can definitely add to our knowledge about Rotaract,” said Danica Rose Zepeda, from the Rotaract Club of the University of San Agustin. “The team building was fun and at the same time it helped us to know our fellow Rotaractors and other Interactors deeper.”

Meriel was describing the Rotaract and Interact District Training Assembly (DISTAS) held August 19-21 at Punta Villa Resort and Convention Center in Villa, Arevalo, Iloilo City.

Trizia Mae Rodriguez of the Interact Club of Ferndale International School in Zamboanga city echoed: “The best way to produce quality and genuine service begins if we work hand in hand as members of the club. So eventually, the DISTAS successfully united all clubs from the district and we were able to share insights and thoughts despite the difference in age, class, status, location and dialect.”

Rotaract and Interact clubs provide our youth “the chance to share ideas and look at the world’s challenges in a new way.” And this is exactly what the DISTAS experience brought to our young leaders from Panay, Negros, and Western Mindanao. For three days, they mixed it up – As first-time attendees, members of the listening to leadership and service lectures, RAC Bacolod West-LCC, found the DISTAS learning from their elders; interacting “interesting, enjoyable and full of insights. and bonding with fellow leaders; and discovering new things about their own “It gave us a clearer picture of what Rotaract selves and others as they lived up to the is,” they said. “It is not just a club to perform mantra of “Service Above Self.” your obligations at but rather a portal to unleash your passion with.”

“I’ll rate it 10 out of 10,” said John Rey Siason, of the Rotaract Club of STI College-Kalibo. Among the speakers were National Youth Commission (NYC) executive director Lex Tupas, PP Ramon Dacayo, and Mayor Jason Gonzales of Lambunao, Iloilo. C

asa Real, Iloilo’s iconic seat of power for over a hundred years, was virtually bursting at the seams last July 1, 2016 when several hundred Rotarians from all over District 3850 gathered to witness the district’s changing of the guards for Rotary Year 2016-2017.

from June, 2015 to June 2016 to visit as many clubs and to be of service to them,” said Ong as he described the personal sacrifice and the price of leadership. “As you all know, my family resides in Canada and I miss them. This is the first time I saw my son, Jacob, in 6 months.”

The Handover, usually a humdrum formality, was being held in conjunction with the anniversary and induction of officers of the Rotary Club of Iloilo South, incoming District Governor Ronnie Gabalda’s home club. Thus, they were expecting a turn-out of 150 people, at best, exactly the capacity of Casa Real’s main hall.

Still, he added: It was an enjoyable and an inspiring journey for me, and I beam with pride of our collective works. It was worth all the efforts and the sacrifices. I will treasure our time together, our friendships and our shared values.”

But they underestimated the Rotarian’s instinct for partying. Badly. Suddenly, everybody from all corners of the district wanted to be a part of the event, turning the affair into an SRO smash hit. Luckily, the good guys and gals of RC Iloilo South were equal to the occasion – no stomach went unfilled, no thirst unquenched. No one could be happier that evening than outgoing DG Oliver Ong who thanked everyone, including his mother, for their support and for being a gift to the world and the district. “I was practically living out of a suitcase

more experiences and thoughts to share to other Rotarians. But I will have more time with my family to compensate for the time away from them ... which I feel is the only main sacrifice I will have as a DG.

The incoming district governor, on the other hand, was a picture of mixed emotions. Although quite elated by the unexpected turn out, he knew what was coming. For the next 12 months he belonged to Rotary. “I always associated my Handover with a continuation of my journey as a Rotarian,” DG Ronnie said. “With that specific event, I am reminded that a new Rotary theme is in effect and that for the next 12 months I have official duties from RI.” He added: “I thought that being a DG is a job that I have to do that requires a bit more of my time, talent (if any, haha) and treasure. I end that 12 months still as a Rotarian, maybe a bit wiser and with

There were all sorts of Rotary governors – past, present, and future, hanging around that evening. But not to be outshone was one very real governor who was the inducting officer and guest speaker, the venerable Iloilo Governor Arthur D. Defensor, Sr. While his speech was edifying, the 71 year old governor’s continued presence during the affair which lasted well into the evening, was no less inspiring. A Paul Harris fellow and former member of RC Iloilo South, Gov. Defensor summed up the event, saying: “I spent the best years of my life with Rotary.”
