GUEST SPEAKER Mark ‘Squiz’ Squirrell has experienced more than many can dream about.

When he headed to the East Timor Crisis in 1999 he was setting out on the adventure of a lifetime. It was a journey that would see him navigate some of the globes most brutal war zones to deliver emergency aid and conquer the worlds tallest mountain. Awarded the coveted “Green Beret” in his role as a commando with the Australian Special Forces, Squiz burned with a passion to put his skills to good use. His enthusiastic innocence was lost as the harsh reality of life in the emergency zone hit home. His aid work took him to countries such as Sudan, Palestine and Afghanistan where he met child soldiers, negotiated with rebels and narrowly escaped imprisonment. To raise awareness he ran the Athens marathon dressed in an Afghan burkha and put together an adventure team, comprising an Israeli and Palestinian. To top it off, Squiz battled thin air, freezing temperatures and malfunctioning equipment to raise the United Nations World Food Progamme flag on top of the world. Whether you enjoy vicariously riding the rapids of someone’s hazardous voyage through life, or whether you want to be inspired by the determination of a man who dared to dream,

This year's GSE experience is in real trouble! So far I have received five applications for Team leader and the response from clubs to Home Host has been very encouraging, but to date I don't have ANY firm applications for Team Members! There's one very possible and I'm hopeful I'll receive another application shortly, but that's not nearly enough. PLEASE do what you can to get me some applications. Surely amongst your work colleagues or friends there's some bright young people between the ages of 25 and 40 who would benefit from this marvellous experience. Details of the Exchange are below, please do what you can to help. The dates for the exchange are: District 9790's: Australian team's visit to the Philippines - 19th March to 18th April, 2013

THE PRESIDENTIAL CROSS CHAT XRAY STEVE

Lots of activity from Rotary International down to the grass roots level and lots of exciting things starting to occur within our club so here is a snapshot of some of these happenings.

HAT DAY - Melbourne - 12th October

We as Rotarians have a GREAT PR opportunity available with this coming event – HATDAY IN MELBOURNE CITY SQUARE – October 12th. We need clubs to wear their Rotary gear and bring along club pull up banners to show a high profile and help us with collection bins for the day. Please click here for the running sheet for day – needed on site between 11 and 1.30pm NEW Generations As the sponsor of a Rotaract club, an Interact club, or both, your Rotary club creates opportunities for young leaders to begin a lifetime of service through Rotary. The New Generations team can help you support your sponsored clubs to make an impact in your community. Learn how you can help your sponsored clubs to set goals, connect, and be recognized this year.

Lots more going on which we bring to your notice over the coming weeks but some great opportunities to join in and get involved. See you Tuesday.

In February 2011, Christchurch experienced its second major earthquake in six months. 166 people were killed and there were devastating consequences for thousands of others. People lost their homes, their jobs, and it will be a long time until life returns to normal for them. Even now most do not have stable housing and many are still waiting for insurance money to come through. Diamond Creek was delighted to host ten residents of Christchurch as part of the Rotary New Zealand Respite visit. This was the last part of their 18 days in Australia after staying with clubs at Myrtleford, Albury West, Wangaratta and Mooroopna. For the five Rotarian hosts (Rob and Lynne, Phil and Gemma, Rod and Maureen, Geoff and Glenda and Alan and Kerry) it was a privilege to have them. We collected them from Nagambie on Saturday morning and proceeded to the Donnybrook Cheese Factory for a long lunch! On Saturday night we had a very relaxed function at Rob and Lynne’s who very kindly opened their home. Thanks to all the other partners for the delicious food that they brought. It was great that DG John and Eileen were able to join us – always great supporters of these kinds of projects.

attended South Pacific which was just fantastic. Others spent time exploring Melbourne and generally sightseeing. Monday took the guests to all kinds of places – everywhere from Tesselars Tulip Festival and the Dandenongs to the Diamond Creek CFA for a vocational visit. Early on Tuesday morning they left Melbourne to fly home, but not before telling us how much they appreciated this trip and how good it was for all of them to get away from the wreckage and the red tape to just experience the marvellous hospitality. The words of our guests on their return home said it all: “We would like to thank you both for the tremendous welcome and stay we had with you. We had a wonderful time and will cherish the time we had with you and the trips you took us on. People keep on asking which was the best part of the trip but we could not single out anything as it was all so good especially with all the wonderful hosts we had.” Thanks to Rob for organising Diamond Creek’s part in this trip – it was a fantastic experience for us all.

Alan Jones

Being the last part of their visit, the guests were given the opportunity to follow their interests and were able to spend some quality time with their hosts. On Sunday afternoon, a large group of us
