THE PRESIDENTIAL CROSS CHAT XRAY STEVE At our last meeting we heard from Sheridan Morris, a researcher, historian, author and novelist, who gave a very informative talk on Australian history in general and more specifically on her published books on the History of Melbourne, Clydesdale horses and shearing. Sadly our power point projector refused to talk to the lap top computers with the result that we missed out on what looked like a very interesting visual presentation. Luckily Sheridan more than capably gave us a verbal presentation which enabled us to picture the scenes, characters and activities that she has written about as well as demonstrating a wonderful depth of knowledge about Australia. What Sheridan’s presentation highlighted was just how interesting our history is, how little we probably know and certainly made me want to read and learn more about our country and our history. And then we hear that our politicians and public servants want to reduce the curriculum content of Australian History taught from primary level right through to tertiary level for no discernible benefit!!!! The next time I bump into a politician I will let them know what I think – for what it’s worth.

What else is happening? Take the Rotary Membership Challenge! See Phil Chambeyron for details. Share your passion for Rotary with your family, friends, and community during Membership and Extension Month in August. This year you’re invited to take part in two activities designed to help you remember why you joined Rotary, what keeps you coming back, and why others should join. First, take the Rotary Membership Challenge. Commit to sponsor a new member, tell a friend or colleague about your club’s projects, or volunteer as a mentor to prospective or new members. After you complete the form we’ll email you links to resources to help you meet the challenge! Second, participate in the first-ever Rotary Moment Tweet Day on 14 August. Tweet about your favourite Rotary memory or event, talk about your club’s activities, or share your community service project. Use hashtag #Rotary Moment. Not on Twitter? Listen to Rotary’s popular webinar Using Social Media to Promote Your Club or District to learn how to create a Twitter account, post your first tweet, use hashtags, and lots more. Nervous about e-activities. We have lots of people that can help. Have a go!!!!

Sergeant Roger creatively extracted money from us with a number of craftily twisted tales. We are looking for volunteers for take on some of Bev’s responsibilities now she is president elect. These roles are important and must be filled. Chair: John Egan Sheridan Morris - guest speaker is an author and public speaker. She works with people and groups to work towards achieving their goals. Sheridan grew up in South Australia. She discovered her writing after a number of different career steps and now has published several books. Her emphasis is on humour and anecdotes. Her first book is 'Melbourne past and present' which features photos taken many years ago compared with photos from today. It tells the story of the establishment of Melbourne, the character of Melbourne's streets, early public works Another book tells the story of Clydesdale horses. This includes interviews with old timers who actually used them and photos. Only the toughest Clydesdales survived the journey to Australia and these became the tough breeding stock that we know about. Another book 'On the sheep’s back' tells the story of how the Australian economy grew on the 'sheep’s back' supporting the British textile industry. The gold rush spawned innovations such as shearing gangs and fences as labourers moved away to find gold. Other books include 'Balance those hormones' and 'How to use humour in business' Raffle won by David Lindeman Raffle raised $64 Fines raised $40

'The Great Foundation 5 cent challenge'

Rotarian Arthur Lewin empties his ‘FULL’ 5 cent collection container. Weighing 6.1 kilograms, holding 2031 coins amounted to $104.05 ! Also assisted by Rotarian (and Branch Manager) Tina Elmer. Both Rotarians are members of the Rotary Club of Diamond Creek and each member was presented with one of the 'The Great Foundation 5 cent challenge' collection containers. Arthur explained “ It was easy to fill. I was having a drink with some mates and asked the barman if I could leave the container on the bar. After returning shortly the barman said he was ‘happy to leave it here for a week mate.’ After the week I left it at the local butchers for a few days and then on to my Running Club, everyone was happy to put in.” Late in November the Diamond Creek Club is planning a ‘weigh in day’ where members will deposit their collections at the local Bendigo Bank Branch. The Club’s Foundation Chair Linda Gidlund has offered a Bottle of Red for the member who collects the most 5 cent coins.

If you Club requires more containers or new lids , orders can be placed with District Secretary Greg Adams. secretary@rotary9790.org.au The cost of the Containers is $4.50 each + Delivery inc. GST and lids are free.
