Blast from the past the year 1995 – 1996 President Cliff Wearne Surprise. During the year our ‘Three Musketeers’, Robin Chapple, Bob Eycken and John McCrohan had a surprise presentation of certificates of appreciation for their work and guidance in getting the Club started. Town Fair Our participation in the Diamond Creek Town fair saw all of the Club involved in some part of the operation. We had a stall with home made jams and sauces and also ran the welly throwing contest. We also sponsored the “Best Commercial Float” and The Battle Of The Bands”.

from the president keeping up with the joneses! “The greatest feeling in the world is when you are on that soccer field, and you know that your team is going to succeed because you look around and see your 10 best friends playing beside you.” - Anonymous
Soccer is a world sport, Rotary is a world organisation. Both cover the international scene and are known in countries throughout the world. In soccer you need goals to win. In Rotary we need to set ourselves goals and work towards these in order to achieve results. Soccer has rules and discipline. In Rotary we have high ethical standards. And we have the Sergeant! Part three of the four way test asks us: “Will it build good will and better friendships?” Soccer has created some amazing international friendships and so often through sport, world understanding can progress. Whether it is on the international stage or in our own club at Diamond Creek, I hope that all our actions build good will and better friendships. Not just in the community, but also amongst ourselves. To be successful in soccer you need teamwork, and we certainly need this in Rotary. We all need to be coming from the same direction. Rotary is not about individuals, it’s about a group of people with similar ideals and focus all working together to accomplish some extraordinary things. It would be nice to think that when you are on the soccer field, you have your ten best friends playing beside you. Let

us look at this from the Rotary perspective. If we are embarking on a Rotary Project it would be great to think that here at Diamond Creek, we have our 29 best friends working beside us. Your team cannot win without loyalty, cooperation and support just as a Rotary Club cannot function successfully without these things. When you are listening to Maxwell tonight, think about the parallels with Rotary. I am sure that you will find many.

RI PRESIDENT December 2011
President Alan opened the meeting and welcomed the many Rotaractors and Rylarians as well as visiting Rotarians accompanying them. Alan made a presentation of a Club dinner badge and an Akubra hat to the Ambassadorial Scholar Mariko Igawa who will soon be leaving to return to Japan after a year studying in Australia and just recently doing Ryla. Peter Hodge as New Generations Chair, advised the club that Beatriz from Brazil will be our next Youth Exchange student. She will attend Plenty Valley College. However Peter called for more host families. Alan Jones mentioned that the first meeting for the year will be on the 10th January at the Diamond Creek Tavern. PP Alan White advised members that the Community Christmas Carols will be held on Coventry Oval on the 18th December at 6pm.Volunteers are required. PP Geoff Swann advised members that a Christmas Party will be held at his place also on the 18th December but that he will have open house from 1pm. The members voted to also have a meeting on the Tuesday 20th. Chairperson Peter Hodge then introduced Ryla and a Video of this year’s camp was shown. The five Rylarians which the Rotary Club of Diamond Creek had sponsored to Ryla, then spoke in turn about their experiences and their individual perceptions of how Ryla had affected them. Common themes which ran through each speech were that it was the best week of their life; it had changed them for the better; and that they had made friends for life. End of meeting
My dear brothers and sisters in Rotary, In late August, Binota and I were in Ghana, where Rotary Foundation Trustee Vice Chair Sam Okudzeto and enthusiastic local Rotarians took us to the ribbon-cutting for a water project in a little village, Abutia Teti, about 60 miles from Accra. We arrived at about 11 a.m., and the whole village seemed to be there. Everyone had been waiting since early morning to welcome us. In the past, the women had to walk over 3 miles to carry pails of water from a river. Now they had a supply of safe, clean water from tube wells in the village itself. It was a simple but effective project in which Rotary and USAID had worked together. But what struck us most that day was family: The men, the women, the children were all there together, dancing, singing, and welcoming us. It made me think about how everywhere around the world, people come together in families, and families join together as communities. And this made me happy that the first of our emphases in this Rotary year is the family, because the family is where everything begins. It is where life begins, it is where our day begins, and it is where our Rotary service must begin. Because it is the family, and not the individual, that is the building block of the community – and of Rotary. It is one of my great priorities to encourage the involvement of families in Rotary service. I feel incredibly strongly that Rotary should never, ever come between the Rotarian and the family. Rotary service should be something that brings the family closer together. For myself, if I cannot bring Binota with me to a Rotary event, it’s simple – I don’t go! Rotary is not just for me; it is for both of us. This is why I encourage districts to welcome families at district conferences, to involve spouses and children in service projects, and to plan meeting times with families in mind. The more that families are involved in Rotary, the more Rotary will thrive – today and tomorrow. What is Rotary about? It’s about so many things, but at its core, Rotary is about these words: Love your neighbor as yourself. Rotary is about love, and that love has to start with us – and with those closest to us.
