from the president keeping up with the joneses! “Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.” – Henry Ford Working together is the key to success in so many ways. Often, I have written or spoken about teamwork within our club and its importance in the realisation of the club’s goals. But working together and developing partnerships with other organisations can only mean greater achievements for all. Tonight’s Guest Speaker is Jon Baly, a teacher from Eltham High School, who runs the Indigenous Educational Exchange Programs for the school. Jon has requested that the Rotary Club of Diamond Creek becomes a partner in these programs, along with the Greensborough Lions Club who are already involved. Unlike many other partnership arrangements, they are not requesting financial assistance, but support and backing. As a Rotary Club, it is important that we do not lose sight of our goals of assisting others and in so many ways we work in partnership with other organisations to achieve these goals. In working with our new Twin Club, the Rotary Club of Patan Durbar Square, Nepal, we are seeking a Matching Grant. This financial assistance will enable the club to better assist the community there. If successful in our application, we will not just be working in partnership with our Twin Club but also with Rotary itself, through the Matching Grant. In assisting Diamond Creek Primary School with their Shade Sails Project, we worked closely with them on this short term project. Both parties contributed financially and a good working relationship was established. When building the Ramp House for the Riding
for the Disabled Program at Diamond Valley Special Development School, the club was successful in receiving a District Simplified Grant, making the project a three way partnership. The club has a formal partnership with the Nillumbik Shire Council for the operation of the Diamond Creek Rotary Town Fair. This in turn frequently leads to other involvement in Council projects such as BBQ’s or becoming involved in programs such as L2P, where we are the only Service Club represented on their Steering Committee. In the past we have also had a formal partnership with the Bendigo Bank regarding Town Fair Sponsorship. We hope to be able to continue and build upon this with them and to possibly undertake joint projects. At a different level, we have partnerships throughout the community – we have worked with the Diamond Creek Men’s Shed and some of their members attend our in house training courses. We have been involved with the local churches – sometimes assisting them with their programs but also being able to utilise their facilities if needed. These are real and valuable partnerships. Partnerships bring so many benefits. It brings greater financial assistance but there are other advantages as well. Working with others promotes Rotary to the wider community, broadens the discussion of ideas and develops our networks in the local area or internationally. Whether the projects be short term or longer term, partnerships with others can only bring greater success to all.

members are also attending the Greensborough Breakfast. John Egan introduced our Guest Speaker - John Leadbeater to talk on "Australian Rotary Health" .... In 1981, Ian Scott of the Rotary Club of Mornington Victoria, envisaged a monetary fund raised by Australian Rotarians to provide funds for research - initially into Cot Death. This became Australian Rotary Health, the largest national Australian Rotary community service program. It has now allocated over $26 million to research, awareness and education. From 2012, the focus of research grants will be: "The Mental Health of Young Australians". Mental illnesses are just like other illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes and asthma. Unfortunately, the sympathy and support provided to people to people with a physical illness is often denied to those with a mental illness. Mental Illness: 'Mental illness' and 'mental disorder' refer to a medically diagnosable range of disorders that result in a significant impairment of a person's thinking - or emotional/relationship abilities. Mental Health: Mental Health means emotional and mental well being. Mental health is much more that the absence of Mental Illness. It is the realisation of a person's potential and the sense of wellbeing. John gave a very enlightening in-depth view of this subject, especially being involved in the Kinglake Bushfires of which there are a lot of people still suffering in some way or another. This subject is very close to John's heart. This subject of Mental Health is also a part of President Alan's vision statement. Linda won the Raffle. Sarge Rob stung us for $49.00. Raffle made $59.00

An invitation from Mareesa Ballao
Tickets for the Senior School production of ‘Urinetown’ are now on sale! Don’t be fooled by the title. Urinetown is an earnest tale of love, greed, and revolution. The show is set in a town plagued by a 20-year drought, where water has become so scarce that private toilets have become unthinkable. At the mercy of a single dominating corporation, the poor citizens must pay towering taxes and fines to carry out their most private and basic of needs. A hero rises to lead his fellow citizens against the oppressive regime. Hilariously funny and touchingly honest, Urinetown is a must see! It is a light-hearted show that can be enjoyed by the whole family! Come along and support the senior students at as they put on a wonderful show, full of great singing, dancing and a whole lot of laughs.
