All of us are busy people and so often we feel that there is a lot of competition out there for our time. Above everything, our family commitments and our work commitments must come first, and in this busy lifestyle often it does not leave much time for other interests. There are many competing forces for the remainder of our time so why should we devote some of it to Rotary? There really are so many reasons… But one of the major reasons why people do join Rotary is to make a difference – small or large! The Rotary Club of Diamond Creek has been able to make many differences in our local community in recent times. We have assisted the Riding for the Disabled Program at Diamond Valley Special Development School, we have provided shade sails at Diamond Creek Primary School and we have bought vital equipment such as defibrillators. None of these things would have been possible without us. Internationally it is the same. Students who would not have otherwise received an education are being sponsored by our members at the Tenderfoot School in Kenya, people who we will never meet have received aid after a disaster through Shelter Box and we now have the chance to assist disadvantaged communities in Nepal through our sister club project.
These are just “a drop in the ocean” but none of them would have been possible without a little time commitment from a dedicated group of people – Rotarians! Why else should we devote our time to Rotary? On a totally personal level, there are wonderful friendships and fellowship to be found amongst the members – like-minded people who want to be involved and get things done! Rotary is a structured organisation and there are countless opportunities to learn – not just facts about what is needed to be done in the world, but learning about ourselves. It also gives us the prospect of self-development. Where else can you learn some public speaking skills, develop your entrepreneurship or run a major event at the same time as making a difference in the community? So next time, you think that you are too busy to commit to a Rotary project or snowed under with other obligations, take a minute to think about the wonderful benefits that can come from participating in this great organisation.

WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK 17th October 2012 Pride of Workmanship Toast to Australia: Alan White Acting president: PP Alan Jones Reports: Youth Exchange: Bea reported on her experiences at Tatura on this past weekend. This was a gathering of exchange students from the district, a lot of fun and experiences were shared. Town Fair: Rod. The revised layout is now pretty much finalised around Coventry oval which is an attempt to weather proof the fair. New features include the enchanted forest (fairies and all). There are approx 160 stall holders already booked. Please make sure you have this day set aside and have fed your availability to Jacqui. Brochures are now at the printers. Mernda Probus: Ern - next Thursday will be the sign up day! Charter will be 26th November with approx 50 members. Trivia Challenge: Whittlesea rotary have set us a challenge to beat them at their trivia challenge. Please confirm attendance to Alan Jones....! Girls night in: Jacqui - this is organised by the DC living and learning centre. Please let Jacqui know if you are coming. Pride of Workmanship Warwick introduced the POW Ken Crompton spoke of how great workmanship in our community is inspiring and helps to foster cohesion in the community and in turn helps to build a better Australia. The POW awards acknowledge Approach, Attitude, Dedication and Quality in individuals. This reflects the art or skill of a worker, and it follows that if we have pride in what we do, we blossom. Doing good work is a boost to self esteem of the worker and their colleagues. Shire of Nillumbik - Andy Knight. For outstanding work in supporting the infrastructure repair of fire and storm affected areas of the shire. He demonstrates great communication and organisation skills. Lloyds Plumbing - Travis DeSilva. Travis relates very well to clients, looks after his colleagues and also teaches his trade to them. He is a leader and highly regarded by his colleagues. Vines cafe - Jeremy Rogers. Jeremy shows enthusiasm and commitment and has helped to cement vines cafe as a Diamond Valley institution. Raffle raised $104, ($64 actually, I counted the 4 $1 coins as $40!) drawn by Neesha, won by Kerry Jones.

On the weekend 13 –14th October Kerry and I attended the Southern Region’s Rotary Australia World Community Service Annual Meeting and Conference. The weekend was hosted by Rotary District 9790 International Service Committee and the Rotary Club of Yarrawonga – Mulwala at Club Mulwala. Rotarians from six Rotary Districts participated. As we were the hosting district it was my role as the District Shelter Box Rep to organise the Shelter Box display and I am very pleased to say that it attracted considerable interest not just from the Rotarians at the conference but also from patrons at the club. Rotary Australia World Community Service encompasses a wide variety of projects and it is truly inspiring to hear about the amazing works that our Rotarians are undertaking throughout the world. Most of us are aware of Shelter Box and Aqua Box because of Diamond Creek’s and Eltham’s involvement in those projects but there are many worthwhile projects taking place as well. Water and sanitation have always been crucial issues in the third world and there are projects such as Safe Sanitation or Water Saves Lives which are working towards assisting in this area. Rotarians Against Malaria (RAM) is another program which has done enormous good over number of years. We also heard about the Community Fish Farming & Housing Project in Kenya – another amazing program doing good in the world. Diamond Creek’s involvement in World Community Service has always been strong. We have taken the leading role with Shelter Box, assisted with Aqua Box, donated to RAM, sponsored students at Tenderfoot School in Kenya. We now have a wonderful opportunity with our sister club, the Rotary Club of PatanDurbar Square, Nepal, for us to do more in the world. After hearing of such inspiring programs on the weekend it would be great to see our club embrace more international Projects.

SO WHAT IS RAWCS ? Rotary Australia World Community Service Ltd. (A.C.N. 003 444 264) was Incorporated in 1987, as a public company limited by Guarantee, bound by its' own constitution and Articles of Association, authorised by Rotary International as a multi -district function. The company co-ordinates the Activities of Project Volunteers, Project Funding, Donations in Kind and Rotary Against Malaria. Programs of the Activities are FAIM Australia The Australian District Governors of the day are the Council (shareholders) of the Company. It elects a Board which is responsible for the operations of the Company through an elected Executive Officer and chairmen of each Activity Committee. Australia is divided into 5 Regions for ease of administration (Northern, Eastern, Southern, Central, and, Western). Each Region is administrated by an elected chairman and committee proposed each year by the various D.G. Nominees. Each Region reports to the Board on a regular basis. Yearly surveys in areas of need are undertaken. Contact with overseas Rotary Clubs and Aid Agencies are made to assist in authorising and monitoring the activities to ensure viability. Volunteer activities or Funding activity Application forms are completed and offered to Regions for distribution to Rotary Districts and/or Rotary Clubs. Rotarians, Rotary Clubs and Rotary Districts can consult with the various National, Regional, or District RAWCS Activity committees to be advised on procedures and guidelines. RAWCS Ltd. has objects similar to Rotary New Zealand World Community Service and encourages coordination on projects conducted in common areas of need
PROBUS MERNDA HAPPININGS The Mernda Combined Probus Club is up and happening with 48 paid up members. A Committee was formed and the Clubs Charter application is now on its way to Probus South Pacific We done to Ern and his team.
