from the president keeping up with the joneses! “A dream doesn't become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work. “ Colin Powell
In Rotary, we all have dreams! Dreams how we can assist young people to develop; dreams to help the people of third world countries to have a better lifestyle; and dreams to complete community projects in our own local area. There are probably many more dreams that we have as Rotarians, but each one has something in common – it is only through diligence, effort and a strong sense of purpose that we can achieve those goals. Over the past ten months I have seen the club work on and achieve many goals, but all because some members have put in enormous effort. We are a voluntary organisation but for most people when they join that organisation, it is because they have visions that they want to bring to reality. The Diamond Creek Rotary Town Fair would never be the success that it is without sweat, determination and hard work from Rod, Maureen and most of the members. Throughout history, dreamers have always been criticised and mocked. But they are the people who have achieved some amazing goals. I see it here in the Rotary Club of Diamond Creek. By world standards, the goals may be small, but each and every one of them is important because in some way, it will help improve someone else’s life. When the Mental Health First Aid Course was first discussed, some indicated that it was not appropriate and it would never work. Well now it seems that Alan White has more numbers that the course can take! This has been achieved only though his hard work. Some people felt that we would never get a PROBUS club going in Doreen, but Ern has 55 people (and more to come) who
have filled out their forms and can’t wait to attend their first meeting in a fortnight’s time. Sometimes we need to look back and celebrate that hard work and congratulate those who have put in so much. That is exactly what we will be doing at the Club’s 20th anniversary party. It will not be a night for long speeches and Rotary business, but a night of fun that can be enjoyed and we can reflect upon the hard work that has gone into many, many projects over the years. But a celebration such as this doesn’t just happen. It happens because some people put in a huge commitment, often behind the scenes. Whilst there are many members who continually put in a lot of energy I want to thank Ern for the ‘sweat, determination and hard work’ that he is putting into this event to make it a success, (at the same time as working on PROBUS). When you come to the function on 2nd June, you will receive a publication on the history of the club. Without giving anything away, I can only say that you will be amazed by it! And it is due to Greg Adams’ ‘sweat, determination and hard work’. It is an impressive publication indeed. Singling out members is not something that I want to do, because there are many members who do work very hard. Though sometimes, it’s necessary when such a massive effort has been made. So when you attend the 20th Anniversary Celebration, and you are enjoying the entertainment and having a great time, remember it doesn’t just happen. It happens because of the hard work, determination and sweat that members like Greg and Ern put in. Thank you seems so little to say.

as it happened President Alan Jones opened the meeting. Pat Millar had makeups for PETS as has John Gatt and Rob Lloyd. The District Conference debrief held in Yea, was attended by Greg Paull and Greg Adams and the Gatts. Many guests from the NYSF participants were welcomed. These included Steven Despotellis and family from the NYSF program, and Marissa from Rypen. Natasha Madan for the Youth Science Forum, was following in the steps of her older sister Priyani and attended with her parents. A Probus Club meeting of interest will be held tomorrow. See Ern Wardell for details. Apologies were given by Linda Gidlund and Bea our exchange student who is sick and needs some investigations. Greg and Kerry Jones were not present because they were finalizing the Club’s Twentieth birthday book as it has to be sent to the publisher tomorrow. District Assembly will be held on Sunday and it will be a 9 for 9.30am start. The club will have three members attending and they will share transport. The Paul Harris Nominating Committee would like nominations for the award. The Anzac day service will be held at the Marngrook Oval at 10.30 am. For the Weekend Mystery away in June, Geoff Swan said that numbers were satisfactory but a few more people could be accommodated. Booking deposits need to be finalized as Geoff will be away until the 26th May. DGE John Gatt brought the certificate for the club with the highest attendance at District Conference and Bev Baker accepted it on behalf of the club. Chair person Peter Hodge introduced Steven Despotellis and Natasha Madan both successful applicants for the NYSF program. Natasha spoke first and said that her school had started an interact club. Natasha gave a rundown on Interact. She is the president of her Interact club and the club is donating to Aids foundations in Africa, also at home they are fundraising for swags for the homeless. Natasha is a year twelve student and for NYSF attended the University of Western Australia in Perth which was the best twelve days science experience of her life. It broadened her outlook on all aspects of science and she now looks to having a career in physics. Natasha described the many opportunities she had to explore all the different sciences as well as having so much fun, which took up as much time as everything else put together. The ethics of science were also discussed and that led to many in-depth discussions. So many deep life- long friendships were made in those twelve days. Natasha's life has been changed. Steven Despotellis was nominated by his physics teacher who also attended the meeting. He was thrilled to be chosen to go to Canberra out of 2000 + applicants from all over Australia. He enjoyed the laboratory visits, and the focus on the science career journey together with multinational corporations. The students also had a video link up chat with world renowned scientists, at the forefront of world research. They had many discussions, some on the Hippocratic Oath and another on "Are men redundant" and other subjects. The social aspect of bringing together 450 students and 6 international students resulted in all of them having a great time and making lots of friends. Canberra Rotarians opened up their homes to give the participants a rest on the Sundayand Rotarians actually did their washing! The "Next Step Program” has been run later on in the year and included visits to other universities where the students used the university’s science facilities. John Egan stepped in for the treasurer Greg Adams and advised members of the takings for the night. President Alan mentioned that next week’s program will be a club assembly, and if enough time is available, possibly reports on Rypen from Marissa and Bea. End of meeting.
