Inaugurated 10 May 1974
Rotary Club of Terrigal Boundaries As approved in 1974
The original boundary of Terrigal Rotary Club was approved in 1974 and was drawn up as follows: Beginning at Glennie Street a direct line was drawn in a northerly direction to a point between Frederick and Shortland Streets. This line continued north to a junction between Ridgeway and Cutrock Roads and continued in a direct line to the Wyong Shire boundary where it turned east and continued along the coast. The line continued south to Box Head and followed the Old Woy Woy Shire Boundary along the southern foreshore to Wagstaff Point, across Booker Bay to the northern side of The Rip Bridge. A direct line followed the waterline north, including Riley’s and St. Hubert’s Islands, turning west to Algona Road. This line continued north to a point between Erina Street and Barralong Road. The boundary followed a westerly direction to Clarence Road then north along Clarence Road, west along Clyde Road to Erina Trig Station. The line continued along Brady’s Gully Road to meet the starting point at Glennie Street.
In brief Terrigal Club’s Territory included: Avoca Beach, Bensville, Copacabana, Daley’s Point, Empire Bay, Erina Heights, Forrester’s Beach, Hardy’s Bay, Holgate, Killcare, Kincumber, McMasters Beach, Matchem, North Avoca, Pretty Beach, St Hubert’s & Riley’s Islands, Terrigal, Wagstaffe and Wamberal.
Preamble The path taken by the Rotary Club of Terrigal has been both revealing in regards to the innovative fund raising projects implemented, and rewarding in respect of the fellowship gained from being a member. The local community has been the recipient of ‘giving’ in both time and money by our Rotary members. Our clubs’ beginnings commenced in 1974 when P.P. Baden & P.P. John Bowen from the Rotary Club of East Gosford carried out a survey of the area and reported that the formation of such a club appeared to be a viable th proposition. The survey was conducted on the 11 of Jan. 1974 th
The Rotary Club of East Gosford agreed to cede territory to the proposed new club at its meeting on the 20 of Feb. 1974. (The ceded territory is shown on the Rotary Club of Terrigal Boundaries - see page above) rd The Rotary Club of Terrigal was admitted to membership of Rotary International on April the 3 1974 with the first th board meeting held at the home of President Ken Galbraith on the 9 of May 1974. After Charter in 1974 Terrigal Rotary Club operated as a normal Rotary Club, meeting in the function room of Cobb & Co Motor Inn (now called Country Comfort) In 1979 there was conflict with the venue as the function room was not always available. Various other places were tried such as Terrigal Surf Club and the Florida Hotel which was on the site where Crown Plaza now stands. Terrigal Wamberal Memorial Country Club was trialed, but the venue was unsatisfactory due to noise and privacy issues. It was then decided to build our own Community Hall. This suggestion was put forward by President Elect George Gibson who was the Deputy Shire President on Gosford Shire Council at the time. A bank loan of $30,000 was arranged through R.T.N. Graham Pelley, Manager of the C.B.A. Bank Terrigal, with th five members of the club acting as Guarantors. The building was commenced on the 7 of June 1980 In putting this publication together I relied on material found in cardboard boxes that were once in the roof of our hall, shoe boxes in member’s garages, past minutes, scraps of paper found in people’s cupboards, lengthy phone conversations, member computer files and in reading past bulletins! To that end I would like to thank all those members who assisted me in locating the material used in this publication and in particular Peter Halliday who provided an insight into the early activities of the Club. It has not being possible to match all photos against each Rotary year’s copy as most were not dated. There are a number of photo albums, along with past minutes stored in the Rotary hall for future reference. The information included in this publication is 98.3% accurate! The past and current goodwill and fellowship demonstrated over the past 40 years must prevail and continue. History has told us that new membership has always required a lot of attention and nurture as it’s our Club’s future that we are protecting. The publications format has been changed from year 2007/8 so as to enable future Rotary Year Annual reports to be added. Putting together this publication has been very interesting and highly entertaining, and a labour of love.

The Rotary Club of Terrigal was chartered on the 10 of May 1974. Members were given a list of unified classifications for their perusal. Members were asked to any likely prospects to fill the classifications or any other they would like to add to the list. If any member has a suggestion in this line, they just need to ask the Board to open the classification. Extract from the first bulletin: An Adventure Story, each member of the new Rotary Club of Terrigal is a partner to a new adventure that will depend upon him as much as on each and every other member of the Club for its success. If, in the course of time we can look back with warm regard on a satisfying and continuing
“Adventure in Service” then we will have risen to the challenge. A word from President Ken: I am sure that we all share the excitement of the formation of our new Club and are looking forward with eagerness to being chartered as the Rotary Club of Terrigal on May the 10 1974. Those of you have been members of the Rotary Club of East Gosford, and know what it is like to belong to this splendid world wide organisation will be keen to continue your involvement in Rotary fellowship and service. To those who are new to the Rotary movement, we welcome you in joining us as Charter members of Terrigal Rotary Club. I am confident that we will get to know each other quickly and together enjoy the experience of service through our Club activities, in our involvement in meaningful community service, and in wider fields open to us in International Service. I appreciate very much the honour that you have given me by electing me as your fist Charter President. Although I have had some experience in being president of a Rotary Club before, at Lismore and at Blayney, I will certainly need the support of you all to ensure that our initial year sets the pattern for a long and very successful contribution to the activities of Rotary both here and throughout the world. The ‘catamaran’ has been launched, and, with the winds which we ourselves must generate, I’m sure that its voyage will be exciting and rewarding for all of us. - Ken Highlights for the year: th

Unless due notice is given to all members of M.C. and a quorum is present, any decisions made will not be valid. Vacancies on the M.C. shall be filled by the president with the Board’s approval. Membership of the M.C. should not involve members of the Committee any more than club members in rosters for bar work or meal serving. The M.C. will purchase bar supplies which will include a range of wines and spirits. BYO shall be allowed only at the discretion of the M.C. A liquor license shall not be needed to sell to Terrigal Rotary Club members, but if the M.C. should decide to sell to others, a “Function License” would be needed. While M.C. recommendation will always be welcome, the hours that the bar will be open will be fixed by the Board. As the M.C. shall be responsible for all liquor and cash of the bar, it would be prudent of the M.C, to have at least one of its members present at all times the bar is open, however, at the M.C. discretion, bearing in mind their final responsibility for all bar cash etc, a club member could be co-opted for this service.

Our Vocational Service Director George Gibson brought to his position great personal dedication. The Community Service Director Don Moore has kept us all busy with his work on Rotary park which was one of the nd highlights of this Rotary year when District Governor Roy officially opened the park on the 22 of February 1980. Our venue in the early part of the year was somewhat unstable, but we managed to keep things together by using the Surf Club and Church Hall where our catering gang really put in a great effort with somewhat limited facilities. A Businessman’s Dinner was organised and was a huge success for we had Mr. Brian Dolphin of the Small Business Bureau who enlightened us on what they do. Highlights for the year: Service Directors all doing a great job Peter Halliday reports on the history of our Rotary Hall and the opening of Rotary Park.
Rotary Hall History After Charter in 1974 Terrigal Rotary Club operated as a normal Rotary Club, meeting in the function room of Cobb & Co Motor Inn (now called Country Comfort) In 1979 we had trouble with the venue, the function room was not always being available. Various venues were tried such as Terrigal Surf Club and The Florida Hotel which was on the site where Crown Plaza now stands. Terrigal Wamberal Memorial Country Club was tried, this venue was unsatisfactory as it was noisy and had no privacy. The proposal to build our own Community Hall was put forward by president Elect George Gibson who was the Deputy Shire President on Gosford Shire Council. Through George Gibson, the land was granted to Terrigal Rotary Club on a Care and Maintenance basis. A bank loan of $30,000 was arranged through R.T.N. Graham Pelley, Manager of the C.B.A. Bank Terrigal, with five members of the club acting as Guarantors. A Building Committee was formed with R.T.N. Don Moore acting as the Builder. We were not making much progress paying off the loan. President Tom Fitzgerald raised $30,000 interest free loans from members enabling us to pay the bank loan off. We were able to pay back the members within a few years to become debt free. In 1988 a new kitchen was built with the old one becoming the storeroom. We have received advice from DG Greg Muldoon that the vertical committee structure had not been a success in recent years and that as a Club we had not been active in projects – he also noted that whilst our finances’ were generally in a sound position our fund raising activities were limited to income derived from the use of our hall and ROMAC. An outcome from recent Club Assemblies (esp. the TOWS/membership assembly) had indicated that the membership wanted to be involved in more projects and activities. A new Director position has been created viz. Director Way and Means – Geoff Workman has been appointed to this role – a prime purpose of this role is to assist AOS Directors to identify and implement projects. Tom Woods brought up the manning of the kitchen, given that George Mackie and Don Moore have resigned. (April-June) Discussion re ROMAC sponsor child Mei who is out of hospital though is not well enough to come to the Central Coast, however Ian was put forward the suggestion to visit Mei in Sydney and possibly take her to the Zoo – Geoff Grenfell suggested taking Mei and her father to a Rotary meeting of Mosman Club prior to going to the Zoo – these ideas did not come to fruition as no members were available to go to Mosman however, we are very keen to have Mei visit the Central Coast once she is feeling better. Janet Millhouse is currently in Royal North Shore hospital in Intensive Care. A commercial dishwasher and freezer to be purchased for the kitchen. Rotary Year 2007 – 2008 Rotary Club of Terrigal President: Ian Kilpatrick Secretary: Derek Button Board Members/Directors: Gina Growden, Lyn Davies, Mandi Gould, Janet Millhouse, John Spath, Chris Tyler Financial Member numbers at start of the year: 31, at end of the year: 32 Meeting Venue: Rotary Hall. PHFs granted: Derek Button Overview for the year:
Background - 2006-2007 was a challenging year for our club as a number of members resigned. During 20062007 our last two Charter members resigned. The club regretfully accepted the resignation of a long-standing and very active past president due to a legal matter. PP Stewart Whyte had struggled with a debilitating neurological disability that required major surgery and resulted in lengthy absences by him. Towards the end of 2005 the club undertook a SWOT' analysis. The results from that exercise formed the basis of several ideas which would be introduced into the club during the 2007-2008 year. Early Preparation - 2006/2007 Board included a number of new members. Those members were asked to continue serving on the 2007/2008 Board and new members were canvassed to accept a board position as was PP John Spath. The new board held a series of planning meetings: an action plan was developed for each Avenue of Service, an annual budget for the club put in place, a specific plan to increase membership was developed. The Club plan listed eight broad aims and objectives: · Ensure that the club continues to uphold the values and ethics of Rotary international. · Complete at least one project that will benefit a sector of the local community. · Support at least one project that will enhance the people who live in the wider Central Coast area. · Support at least one international project. · Develop a culture within the club of fun, friendship and support. · Develop an “environmentally friendly” – low carbon emission club. · Enhance and collaboration with other Rotary clubs, especially those within a close geographic range. · Establish a “sister” club relationship with at least one other club in a different country. With the exception of number 8 all of the aims and objectives have been achieved. A Club Theme was developed with the purpose to reinforce to members the philosophy and intention of the 2007/2008 Board. The theme was “M.A.D.F.U.N.” – Making A Difference (through) Fellowship, Understanding and Nurturing. A banner was produced with the theme emblazoned against a backdrop photograph of Terrigal beach and the Skillion. The banner was displayed above the top table at each meeting. Club Structure - In anticipation that the club may elect to change to the Rotary International recommended “New Leadership Plan” model, the structure of the club was designed to allow such a change to occur and was designed to encourage every member to have a role. The Five Avenues of Service provided the basis for the structure with a number of committees assisting. Every member was allocated to a committee. In addition to the elected Director, a Deputy Director was nominated. Most of the committees had a chair. Club Service had the largest number of committees. These included; Sergeant at Arms, Bulletin & Guest Speaker Program, Hall Maintenance, Hall Bookings, Membership, Public Relations, Welfare, Attendance, Kitchen team and Website. The
International Avenue was allocated the charity arm of Rotary Foundation. Membership, Public Relations and Rotary Foundation will become significant committees under the New Club Leadership Plan. Hall - Significant improvements have been made to the hall during the year: .completion of pergola at rear of hall, providing a sheltered outdoor recreation area .installation of a rainwater tank, the water now services the toilets .installation of air-conditioning units. PP Geoff Workman was able to obtain a number of air-conditioning units .which were installed under the stewardship of Rob Moffat, and a number of working bees .new fridge and freezer, new laptop computer and new bookcase - obtained through a successful application to the Federal Government’s “small equipment grant” .refurbished bar top, with thanks to Chris Tyler. Guest Speaker Program - The guest speakers at our regular evenings have been outstanding. Included as guests have been: the Mayor, local Federal and State members of Parliament, coach of the Mariners Football team (Lawrie McKenna) and the head of Forensics for the State Police. In addition there have been many Rotary based speakers, including “Operation Cleft”, ROMAC and a Canadian Ambassadorial Scholar. Art Show - Had been a regular activity for our club, but had lapsed in recent years. Through the tireless efforts of Community Services Director, Lyn Davies and her dedicated team, the Art Show was a great success. The Art Show brought together a number of community organisations including the Erina Heights Public School, the Central Coast Water Colour Society and the Central Coast Spinners and Weavers Association. Wheelchairs - Following a request from two villages in Fiji, to assist ill and incapacitated indigenous Fijians, the club provided two wheel chairs. Membership Night - In association with the Kincumber Club we ran a membership night. The guest speaker was Rugby League and Union Legend, Ray Price. Members were encouraged to bring a guest along. The night itself was successful, but regretfully only resulted in one new member for the Kincumber Club. District Conference - The club was well represented at the District Conference and provided a highlight for the delegates at the annual dinner when we entertained with our rendition of “Greased Lightning” from the movie “Grease”. We were awarded a prize on the night and we had a great deal of fun. At the District Conference we were asked by 'Rotary Down Under' to assist in running their merchandise stall. We received 10% of takings that was helpful for the Club's finances. Trivia night - Courtesy of PDG Harold Sharp, Gina Growden and Lyn Davies another fun night was held at what is becoming an annual fund-raising event. Membership - We had set a target of a net increase of ten (10) for the District and achieved a net increase of three (3). Our club inducted four new members and lost one. It was with sadness that we lost Mandi Gould, who moved to Tamworth. Change of Night - The club elected to experiment with changing the night from Thursday to Wednesday. The rationale; that there is little substantial industry or commerce within our catchment area. The main commercial activity is small retail, restaurants or hotels. As Thursday is a prime-trading day for these businesses, it was thought that a change to a different day might improve our potential membership prospects. TEK Debating Challenge - This and the TAFE Metal Trades initiative are the highlights of the year. The challenge brings together the clubs of Terrigal, Erina and Kincumber. Funds raised on the night remained with the host club. The challenge is to be an annual event. Kincumber were the worthy inaugural winners. TAFE Terrigal Metal Trades Trainee Initiative - It has been recognised that there is a skills shortage in Australia, in particular the Central Coast has a lack of skilled metal trade workers as mentioned by PP John Spath. We contacted the Director of the Hunter Institute of TAFE , this lead to the creation of a new initiative for training metal trade workers in a collaboration between TAFE and Alliance People Solutions; NSW Chamber of Commerce, Central Coast Chapter; and Terrigal Rotary Club. Fifteen students were enrolled. Of the fifteen, eight have been offered fulltime apprenticeships with local companies. District Awards - It was with pride that I accepted two (2) District Awards, which I am advised is the most awards our club has achieved in a single year. Community & Charity Support - The 2007/2008 Board distributed $10,000 dollars to: The Rotary Foundation,
Shelter Boxes (3), Australian Health Research Foundation, RYDA. In addition, the club has supported RYDA, RYLA and MUNA. Through either no charge or minimal charge, the club has and continues to support numerous community groups by allowing access to the Rotary hall. These include Narcotics Anonymous, The Autistic School, Adult Family Day Care, Probus and Inner Wheel Clubs.
Highlights for the year: over 60% of planned activities have been achieved the success of the Art Show wheel chairs provided to Fijians TEK Debating Challenge TAFE Terrigal Metal Trades Trainee Initiative Receipt of 2 District Awards
Rotary Year 2008 – 2009 Rotary Club of Terrigal President: Gina Growden. First female president of our club. Secretary: Derek Button Board Members/Directors: Lyn Davies, Bill Boag, Chris Tyler, Sheryl Pearce, Financial Member Numbers at Start of the Year: 28 at end of the year: 29 Meeting Venue: Rotary Hall. PHFs Granted: Tom Woods (Sapphire Pin), Lyn Davies Overview for the year: New Members for 2008/2009: Elizabeth Cook, Marilyn Heaton, Matthew Henning Membership: Seven members resigned with three new members inducted. It was with sadness we said farewell to PP Geoff Workman, a long-standing and active club member. Three members were on long-term leave of absence. A number of members travel frequently which meant that meeting attendance was 60-70%. The club adopted the new Club Leadership Plan, promoted by Rotary International and encouraged by our District Governor, Tony Castley. The transition was painless although had little impact on gaining new members. It did enable Board meetings to be run more effectively with time being devoted to discussing strategic issues rather than details of individual projects which previously occupied significant time. Our meeting day: was changed back to Thursdays following a 6 month trial on Wednesday evenings which had failed to attract the hoped-for new members. Whilst this change back suited most members, a few were disadvantaged by it and were unable to continue to attend. A benefit: of having our own premises is it provides a regular venue for meetings. A major disadvantage is the logistics of setting up for meetings and cleaning up. If we are to attract business and professional people to our club, meetings must be run in a professional and business-like manner, the room must be attractive to potential new members. To facilitate this Terrigal High School provided two Duke of Edinburgh Award students to assist with set up as part of their community service. One of the advantages of having our own hall is that we have control over our meals. We enjoy a great steak each week at a very reasonable price and are envied by most other Rotary clubs on the Coast (and possibly the District). Speaker program: was interesting and varied: Lindsay May who gave an excellent presentation on the Sydney to Hobart Yacht race; local bee keeper, Col Breen; George Richards who was editor of Column 8 for The Sydney Morning Herald; and club members spoke about their recent travels and other topics of interest. The introduction of a regular three minute address by club members on a range of topics; i.e., international countries and members’ personal stories proved to be an interesting and informative segment of the meeting. Joint meetings: with other service organisations, Lions & Probus, were only partly successful. Representations from Inner Wheel and CWA, and The tri-club TEK (Terrigal Erina & Kincumber) debate continued, but other joint meetings did not eventuate. Terrigal was unsuccessful in taking out the coveted TEK trophy. There was some controversy over the judging method and it is strongly recommended that neutral judges be involved in future. Regular monthly barbecues: proposed on the last Friday of each month. Attendance at these was small, and because of other commitments only four were held. th th A highlight of the year: 35 Anniversary Dinner, held on 30 April, organized by Peter Halliday, our longest serving Rotarian. It was a very successful and enjoyable night with over 80 people in attendance including five of our charter members and our charter President, PDG Ken Galbraith.
Group Study Exchange (GSE): Pres Gina Growden, District Chair for GSE, was actively involved in both the Wheelchair exchange with Arizona, USA, the first time that Rotary International had conducted an exchange exclusively for wheelchair users, and the ‘traditional’ exchange with District 1900, Germany. Terrigal Club played an integral role in the exchanges by hosting both teams at dinners and with club members participating in social and vocational activities, as well as acting as host families. Our candidate, Lauren Sheen, was selected to be part of the outbound team travelling to Germany in May. District Conference: PP John Spath was part of the planning committee for the Conference which was held in Newcastle in March. Six members and their partners attended the conference. District Committees: A number of club members held positions on these, including PP Ian Kilpatrick – Membership; PP John Spath – District Conference; Pres Gina Growden – Ambassadorial Scholar Committee, Group Study Exchange Chair and RYLA committee; PE Lyn Davies – RYLA committee. The last District President’s Meeting: dedicated to acknowledging clubs and their achievements. Pres Gina Growden accepted, the award for the best Club Bulletin for small clubs for Terrigal Times, and was honoured to be awarded a special Rotary Foundation District Service Award for her role as District GSE chairman. Financial distribution: has primarily focused on Rotary projects such as The Rotary Foundation, Shelter Box Australia and Australian Rotary Health. The club has supported financially and in member's time RYDA, RYLA and MUNA. We participated in a matching grant from the Rotary Foundation in which the combined Central Coast clubs contributed to a water well project in India and supported an Aboriginal Elder from the Central Coast Community attend a conference in Canberra. Other activities: collecting money for the Victorian Bushfire Appeal and the Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal; selling raffle tickets for our Art Show; and selling trifecta tickets for Melbourne Cup. Specific projects: Emergency Medical Information Cards: 250 were distributed to local nursing homes & retirement villages & a further 250 were purchased & distributed. Terrigal Surf Club: Ocean Swim. Members helped set up & administer during the day. Terrigal Sea Rescue: the launch of their new vessel TSR Mary George. Humanity in Motion Books: 120 books purchased from District and distributed to businesses in the local community for display in offices/waiting rooms etc. Victorian Bushfire Appeal: a stall outside the CBA in Terrigal raised over $1200. Art & Craft Show: held in Terrigal Scout Hall. Central Coast Watercolour Society provided the art and 9 stall holders displayed their crafts including woodwork, silk work and jewellery. Wamberal Public School students displayed their artwork and helped with the sale of raffle tickets. Over $7,000 was raised. Bowelscan: PP Stewart Whyte ran the Bowelscan project. Over $11,000 was raised from sale of kits. Red Shield Appeal: Salvation Army. A stall in the main street of Terrigal on Sunday raised over $2,000. Meals on Wheels: Pres Gina Growden & Harold Sharp delivered food each month. Elizabeth Cook and Denise Covington have also signed up to volunteer for this program. Vampire Cup: several members participated, donating blood. Clean up Australia: organized by PP Jim Flint. Cancer Council Biggest (Morning Tea) Supper: held following the Thursday meeting in May, over $100 raised. Compeer: Denise Covington continued to run this mental health program. Recreational Vehicle Owners: PP John Spath organized a dinner for members, visiting from Queensland. Money Boxes: were distributed to locations around Terrigal and Wamberal. th Awards Night: 29 January 2009: 6 Awards presented: 5 Vocational and a Quiet Achiever’s Award (to Matt Hennig who later joined the club). Vocational visits: Fairhaven Services warehouse in Tuggerah and Crowne Plaza, Terrigal. National Youth Science Forum: our candidate, Stephanie O’Malley, will attend the program in January 2009. RYDA (Rotary Youth Driver Awareness): our members helped run the Central Coast program held in March. MUNA (Model United Nations Assembly): two teams sponsored from Central Coast Grammar. One of these teams won the competition and represented the Coast in Sydney. The other received an award for best costume.
RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards): Linda Smith sponsored in the RYLA program at Vision Valley. Our club assisted with the Leadership in Crisis session and attended other sessions including the official dinner. Youth Exchange: whilst Tim Evers was not officially our youth exchange student two of our members, Lyn Davies & John Spath, were host families for him and a number of other club members entertained him. Tim was a regular at our club and gave a professional presentation on his home country, Germany, at one of our meetings. Lauren Sheen attended this meeting. She is our participant in the Group Study Exchange program travelling to Germany in May. The Board approved the hosting of Tommy Ahearn a youth exchange student from Quebec, Canada in 2009-10. St Edwards at East Gosford agreed to offer a scholarship to Tommy and waive tuition fees. Local Schools: we attended awards presentations at Central Coast Grammar and Terrigal Public School presenting plaques for students selected for community service. Shelter Box: remained our prime focus in the International Avenue of Service. The proceeds of our weekly sergeant’s fine sessions were allocated to the purchase of two shelter boxes. Peter Pearce (husband of Sheryl) gave us an interesting address on his deployment in the Congo & Sudan where he helped in the distribution and setting up of Shelter Boxes, including two donated by our club. Rotary Fellowship Exchange to Germany: attended by Pres Gina and her husband, Harold Sharp, and two other Rotarian couples from our District. Our club will be hosting the German inbound team in October. Club Classification Directory: was established to help members actively participate in increasing membership. This was used to identify vocational areas absent from the current membership. Whilst the commitment of the club’s Membership team was strong, available time was limited. Centurion Program: Three members of the club participated in this program. Group Study Exchange: Terrigal Club hosted a welcome barbecue for the wheelchair GSE team from District 5490, Arizona, USA. We also hosted a combined dinner for the inbound team prior to them travelling to Newcastle to attend the District Conference. The program for the wheelchair exchange was organized by Harold Sharp, wife of President Gina. This GSE was the first exchange for wheelchair users and was extremely successful and did much to change many Rotarian’s perceptions of people with disabilities. The second GSE with District 1900, Germany was organized by President Gina. The German team spent 5 days on the Coast, making an official presentation at a combined dinner at Gosford Golf Club attended by 75 Rotarians and partners. The Rotary Foundation: PDG Pam Pritchard gave an update on the Polio Eradication program and Foundation director, PDG Geoff Grenfell also addressed different aspects of the Foundation to inform members. PE Lyn Davies attended a public relations training course, funded by the club. Hall: An OH&S assessment was conducted twice during the year and resulting issues were addressed. An emergency evacuation policy was developed. New fire extinguishers were installed and sign-posted. Improvements: new locks installed on external doors, thanks to PP Steve Muter; register of new keys set up; painting the interior of hall; purchase of new curtains; cover on pergola at the rear of the hall; new hot water system; new fridge for kitchen; working with the Garden Club to maintain garden beds; installation of air vents in the passageway to kitchen. The board has approved the purchase of a double sink for the bar and is investigating the possibility and costs of installing a dish washer in the kitchen and a glass washer in the bar. External lighting is an issue as vandals destroyed the light globes. Investigations are underway in conjunction with Gosford Council to find suitable lights that are both vandal-proof and affordable. Hall usage during the year has remained relatively consistent. Regular hall hirers include community groups such as Probus and Inner Wheel clubs as well as the Autistic School and casual hirings have been for weddings, birthdays and public meetings.
Rotary Year 2009 – 2010 Rotary Club of Terrigal President: Lyn Davies Secretary: Gina Growden Board Members/Directors:,Gina Growden – Secretary, Harry Waddington – Treasurer 2009, Gina Growden Treasurer 2010, Administration Director Derek Button. Financial Member numbers at start of the year: 29 at end of the year: Meeting Venue: Rotary Hall. PHFs Granted: Bill and Norma Boag Overview for the year: Welfare: A Welfare Office has been created. Lynne Parkinson has done a wonderful job in this new role. The profile of Rotary: has increased in the local community through: engagement with local businesses and community organisations; advertising our programs at events such as Carols by Candlelight; the Surf Classic; at Rotary Stalls in Terrigal for the Trifecta, Haiti and Red Shield Appeals; Money Box distributions; and the scuttling of the HMAS Adelaide. These connections can pave the way to increasing Club membership. The club has been seeking a major project that is sustainable over time. Such events as book fairs, art shows, fun runs, a Jazz/Blues Festival and graffiti removal have been considered. Of these ideas the Graffiti Project is becoming operational. International Program: Ian Kilpatrick and David and Dianne Waterhouse travelled to India for Polio Plus, David and Dianne and Graeme & Lyn Davies travelled through RAWCS - to Cambodia and East Timor respectively. Rotary Hall: a separate Management Committee with a business plan and more member participation in decisions and activities at the hall is needed to make the hall a more viable financial proposition, as it is currently our major fundraiser.
Weekly meetings: have aimed to actively engage members, encourage good communication at all levels and through a variety of mediums – newsletters, announcements, phone & email contacts. A weekly shared Cheat Sheet for meetings and an interesting and varied Program were essential ingredients. Club membership is changing, it’s about attendance requirements, family commitments, work responsibilities, communication technology. The challenge is - how to accommodate this? Club Leadership Plan: The low level of engagement with the governance of the Club has resulted in low functioning committees. However members and partners endeavour to give unstintingly their time, resources and energy, from the Kitchen and Bar Crews who kept us fed and watered, to the Projects Chairs who worked very hard to bring us a number of excellent programs and activities. The dedicated Board of Directors met 11 times through the year displaying great dedication and commitment to the Club. District meetings and activities: It is inspiring to learn about the variety of stunning things Rotary District 9680 does. Many of these things are illustrated in the District Calendars and Humanity in Motion Coffee Table Books. Attending meetings, special events, presentations and helping with joint projects strengthens Rotary and enriches our networks, programs and knowledge. It is enriching to visit other Clubs (including Inner Wheel and Probus) to see the projects others take on.
Highlights of the year: The friendships and acquaintances have made both locally, at District and internationally. Leadership skills development; observing the personal growth by individuals in our club. Youth programs and Foundation Programs; meeting wonderful local and international young people with such optimism for the future. Charity contributions; particularly to ShelterBox and the Rotary Foundation
I started the year with the quote:,“Let’s…..look beyond the parish pump” Or (in our case) beyond the Rotary Club!” (RI President John Kenny) And ended the year with the quote: Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future. (John F. Kennedy)

Rotary Year 2010 – 2011 Rotary Club of Terrigal President: Derek Button Secretary: Chris Tyler Board Members/Directors: Lyn Davies, Gina Growden, Elizabeth Cook, Denise Covington, Geoff Spring, Bill Boag, Financial Member numbers at start of the year: 29, at end of the year 31 Meeting Venue: Rotary Hall. PHFs Granted: Ian Kilpatrick Overview for the year: Projects: Graffiti Removal, collections for Flood & Tsunami Appeals, contributing to the Shelterbox project, supporting District RYLA & RYDA projects helping with Carols on the Beach, Salvos Red Shield Appeal, Terrigal Surf Club Ocean Swim, Pride of Workmanship awards, Election BBQs and supporting various local Rotary projects. Attendance at these functions has been good with members turning up to help in cooking, collecting, cleaning and generally enjoying the fellowship. Meeting Format: the time may come when a move to fortnightly meetings or considering the 50% attendance an attractive option. To increase membership, especially recruiting younger members, and to get commitment to projects, we must be more flexible in time and meetings in the future. The Hall: visitors are constantly expressing their enjoyment at attending one of our meetings and comment on the attractiveness of our club. The Rotary hall is our greatest asset, but it is becoming financially draining with cleaning and other maintenance costs. Hall Management - The future of the Terrigal Rotary hall has come into the spotlight this year when Gosford C.C. took overall control of the maintenance and upkeep of the premises. This was thought necessary as members are now no longer able to spare the time to do general maintenance tasks outside and inside the hall. With fewer active members and less building expertise, it has been necessary to pass the maintenance tasks to the Council, which is again, an annual expense for the club's funds. There has been much discussion as to the future of Rotary meetings being held in the hall or an alternative venue, but finally the club members came down on the side of the status quo. The work done previously by some of our members has now been taken on by the hall cleaners, which has meant extra expense and as a consequence, we must now be ever more careful of expenditure on the hall and meals. The alternative could be an increase in the subscriptions or meal costs. Additions to the kitchen have been; a new industrial dishwasher, a refurbished sink and steel preparation tops to the tables. Extra power points were also added in the kitchen. Hall Management is still the biggest income for club funds and will continue to be for the foreseeable future. This year our hirers included :- Probus Clubs, Central Coast Quilters, a Garden Club, Terrigal Inner Wheel, The Autistic School, the Central Coast Community College Spanish classes, a Pilates class, Buddhists, local Community groups and individual hiring’s for parties, baby christenings, etc. The hall has been used for local NGOs, such as The Central Coast Suicide Prevention and Mental Health group. Hall hire is cost competitive and in line with other community halls in the area. There have been approximately 320 hiring’s involving over 1200 hours of use this year from our regulars and the local community. This has resulted in an income of around $ 10,000 gross to help boost the charitable funds of the club. This is on a par with previous years .

On-Going Community Activities:
Graffiti Project: The Rotary Club of Terrigal is working with the Rotary Club of Kincumber. The equipment is in place in the container at the Rotary Hall. Work has commenced in the local area.
Moneyboxes: - These boxes are an easy way to raise money for our charities. This year we raised $347.50.In addition The Bamboo Buddha has raised $990.05, almost enough for a Shelter Box. RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Award): In 2011 Terrigal Rotary Club sponsored Robert Spier at a cost of $795.00. Robert thoroughly enjoyed the week-long program held at the Salvation Army Conference Centre at Collaroy. He gave a talk and Power Point presentation to our club and expressed his appreciation for our support and explained the benefits he gained from attending RYLA.. RYE (Rotary Youth Exchange): In 2011 Terrigal Rotary Club sponsored Katarina Yamasaki as our exchange student to Belgium. Lynne Parkinson acts as her Counsellor and regularly corresponds with her. She has been on several trips; to Anne Frank’s house, Van Gogh’s Museum, and with her house -mother she travelled to Maastricht in Holland. She has given her first Rotary speech in French and has started school. Her subjects are French, English, Maths, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Geography, Religion, PE, and Social Sciences. She is having a wonderful time and her relationship with her house parents grows stronger every day. RYDA (Road Safety Youth Driver Awareness Program): In March-April 2011 The Road Safety Driver Awareness program was held again at the Wyong Racecourse. Chris Tyler and Denise Covington are on the committee for the Central Coast and regularly attend RYDA meetings along with about 10 others from Rotary Clubs on the Coast. Meetings are held at Kariong, in the evenings from 6.30-8.00pm on week-nights that most suit all committee members. Chris Tyler’s contacts at 2GO, The Express and NBN supported the project again this year. For the first time this year we advertised the program in all the school’s newsletters and Denise
Covington phoned all school Principals and Year 11 Co-ordinators to encourage greater attendance. We did achieve a higher number than previous years, but we are aware that some schools are in financially disadvantaged areas and need assistance to pay for the hire of buses and the $10.00 fee to cover the cost. MUNA (Model United Nations Assembly): In May 2011 Terrigal Rotary Club sponsored 2 teams at a cost of $400.00. Terrigal High did not participate this year, however, Central Coast Grammar entered several teams. This was held at the Wyoming Sports Centre. It is a program where High School Students develop an awareness of the United Nations and the countries they represent at this simulated UN Assembly. They address and debate problems and issues of International concern. CCYCA (Central Coast Young Champions Award): In April 2011 Terrigal Rotary Club nominated three candidates in this contest. They were Amy Nurthen for Sport; Chris Higgins for Music; and Jack Lovicu for Academic and Public Speaking. This cost our club $150.00. Jack Lovicu, who the club sponsored, was an award winner in the Academic category and received $1000 for his achievements. Foundation Report: The Club has continued its involvement with the Rotary Foundation by continuing our participation in the Centurion Programme whereby the majority of members contribute $100 each towards the continuing worldwide Rotary activities initiated by the Foundation. G.S.E.: Members of the GSE Team from Texas were hosted by club members. A day of activities was organised and included a visit to Terrigal beach where Lifeguards explained and demonstrated their activities. They were also shown the Control Centre in the Haven. Vocation Report: The club members have been out on several Vocational visits in the year:
Oz Trikes - at Somersby where Ian was almost talked into having one for the Axiom group, George was all for it.
The members had a wonderful meeting away from the hall at David & Dianne Waterhouse's home at Berkeley Vale.
The Harp maker was to be another visit but he came to us and his modern method of making harps with traditional Australian materials was a revelation to members.
The Pride of Workmanship Awards took place in May and although the number of recipients was down on previous years, they were worthy winners of their awards. Ian Kilpatrick as M.C. and PDG Geoff Grenfell's talk on the history and meaning of the Award were well received. We were fortunate to have Deborah O'Neill M.P. presenting the shields at the event.
The Royal wedding celebration in May with Gosford City Rotarians was a great evening with members and partners taking the effort to look the part. Food was cooked by a chef who worked at Government House in Wellington, N.Z. who had previously cooked for Prince William on his visit.

Overview for the year: Pres Chris suffered a severe stroke during his year of presidency and continued through the year to recover slowly, but well. We wish him all the best. Weekly Meetings - During Chris’s absence, the meeting was chaired by a number of past presidents including IPP Derek Button, Lyn Davies and Ian Kilpatrick. Membership: There have been 7 resignations and 5 members are on long term leave of absence – this is more than 30% of our Club and has put pressure on the balance of our club members. Board: 9 board meetings have been held this year. Hall: Our club has invested over $20,000 into our hall from Local and State Government Grants. The roof over the rear patio has been extended, a new glass sliding door has been installed on the Western wall and entry into the main hall has been widened for wheelchair access, with new tables and chairs arriving in the new Rotary year. Catering: Discussions about whether or not we relocate our meetings to outside venues. It was agreed that we should stay at the hall and have outside caterers cook for us each week. This would be trialed for six months and then re-evaluated. Approaches were made to a number of commercial caterers and three were asked to provide meals on a rotational basis with the kitchen crew, led by Tom Woods, cooking on the fourth Thursday of the month and on special occasions. After six months it was agreed to engage Mel from the Avoca Tea House on a regular basis with Tom providing an occasional barbecue or special occasion meal. Room Set Up & Clean Up two members of the Duke of Edinburgh program at Terrigal High School have volunteered each week to set up the room for the meeting, Ttey also put out the flags, microphone, podium, computer and data projector. Welfare Officer - Lynne Parkinson has carried out this role for a number of years. She sends cards to members and partners who are celebrating a birthday or anniversary, and forwards get-well cards to those who are sick. She also keeps in touch with members who are absent for a number of weeks and gives reports on their welfare. Vocational: This year has been a great year with our Vocational director Ian Kilpatrick: with interesting guest speakers; a visit to Gosford Police Station; a visit to Parliament House in Sydney; and a Pride of Workmanship Awards Night. Terrigal Rotary Club has again won the Vocational Award. Social Functions: Fellowship is an integral part of every Rotary club and this year a number of special events were organised for this purpose. These included our annual Christmas dinner held at Sea Grill at Copacabana, our seafood night, our last meeting before Christmas; and our Social dinner at the Waterhouse’s for our first meeting in 2012. A planned tennis day and barbeque was cancelled at the last minute due to heavy commitments by members, but will be held in the coming year. Highlights of the year: an ethics forum and a speech competition involving local high school students Pride of Workmanship evening which recognised members of the local emergency services.

President’s Report It has been an honour to be president of the Rotary Club of Terrigal during the past twelve months and I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. As with most clubs, it has been a year of highs and some ‘not so highs’ with a few challenges along the way, but I am delighted to say that the support I have received has been very much appreciated, and I am grateful to all members for their trust and loyalty and preparedness to support me in the projects and ideas that I put forward. Initially attendance at meetings proved very challenging with a number of our members on long term leave of absence due to travel commitment, and others involved in work and family activities precluding them from regularly coming along, and it was not unusual to have as few as 12 or thirteen members attending each week. At one meeting only 9 had booked in and I strongly considered cancelling the meeting, but we ended up with six visiting Rotarians and guests which brought our numbers up to a (reasonably) respectable 15. Fortunately, as the year progressed attendance improved and it was rare for us to have fewer than 20 at a meeting in the second part of the year. There is no doubt in my mind that the excellent speaker program, organised by Past President Lyn Davies was a major factor in this turn-about and I sincerely thank Lyn for her efforts. Membership has proved to be another challenge as although we inducted Jenni Allen and Jill Hamilton before Christmas, we sadly accepted the resignations of Sheryl Pearce and Lambertha Kleefstra during the year who found it difficult to attend regularly due to work commitments. We also saw very little of Matt Hennig throughout the year. Because of his special circumstances requiring a full-time carer and a driver, and the difficulties is securing both, Matt was unable to get to many meetings, and is unlikely to retain his membership in the coming year. Ill health continued to keep Steve Muter from attending each week and although Stewart Whyte was unable to travel regularly from Glen Innes where he now lives, he did manage to attend our meetings when travelling to Sydney on business. Stewart offered to edit the club Bulletin, Terrigal Times, which he was able to do from home, and I was extremely grateful for this offer. We were fortunate to have Robin Header attend reasonably regularly as a visiting Rotarian having relocated to Bateau Bay from Lindfield. Robin retained his membership at Lindfield, but will join the club at the commencement of the new Rotary year. Our membership currently sits at 24 which is the lowest it has been since I joined the club nine years ago.
Two very successful book sales were held, the first in September and the second in March and together they raised just shy of $10,000 which enabled us to financially support a few local charities and Rotary projects in our end-of-year dispersing of funds. The entire club (and partners) participated and I’m very grateful to everyone for their enthusiasm and hard work which ensured that both events were not only profitable, but also great fun. We also ran a barbecue at the Senior Citizen’s Centre in September during the local council elections which raised a few extra dollars for the club. The hall, which continues to be our main project, was less successful than in previous years as vandalism (including broken windows and showering the kitchen with fire extinguisher foam) on two separate occasions in as many weeks forced the Board to revise the hiring policy and to refuse new eighteen and twenty-first birthday party hirings. These parties had been a main component of our hall income in past years and a consequential drop in revenue resulted. I am a strong believer that fun and fellowship are the two vital ingredients of a successful Rotary Club and I was keen to ensure these were incorporated into Terrigal’s program during the year. My aim to hold monthly partners’ meetings did not eventuate although we did hold some enjoyable social events throughout the year. These included a Christmas in July, an International night in October, a very enjoyable Christmas dinner at Audrey’s Restaurant at McMasters in December, our traditional seafood night the week before Christmas, and another very enjoyable social night at the Waterhouse’s to start off the second half of the year. All were well supported by members and partners. Our annual Pride of Workmanship Awards night where we recognised six local business men and women who have demonstrated Service Above Self in their working environment, was held in May. I began the year with plans to roster all tasks that need to be done each week (i.e. setting up the room for the meeting, introduction and thanking of the speaker, sergeant of arms, etc) among the members, but the initial erratic attendance of members and their failure to ‘find a replacement’ for their allocated task soon put paid to that. Likewise, my plans to hold regular three – minute addresses by members (“three-on-me”) each week were also less than successful although the ones that were held were received very favourably. Following on from the successful application for a government grant which enabled us to buy new tables and chairs and cutlery last year, I applied for a Commonwealth Government grant and was successful in obtaining $1600 which enabled us to purchase an overhead project screen for the hall and provide some travel support for Matt and Rotaract President, Ben Brown, (who also has cerebral palsy and is unable to drive), to attend some meetings.
