The Ladies at Play

Stop Prezz..... Dear Rotary Families, At this age & stage of my life, I am yet to unravel the power of the word “NEW”. I sometimes wonder why this 3 letter word generates so much excitement, frenzy, festivity, joy, happiness and motivation. Be it a product, activity or our Club, this word suddenly spells magic! It is the same Club, same Rotary families, most of the programs and projects on the same line ……….then why this excitement when we say “New Rotary Year”. Well, I am sure no has the answer! Surely our excitement translates into enthusiasm and enthusiasm into energies, and our energies make us enablers, that Rotary families are expected to be. That is what a New Rotary Year is, I suppose. If the installation ceremony this month, was

befitting our club then equal to the task was Green City Committee which distributed Neem Seeds to 10,000 young Hitavada-Twinkle Club Members. So was the Sports committee which organized a fantastic event of Kho-Kho and Kabbaddi for young Interactors of our adopted Rural school – Sevanand and the Community Welfare committee served hot lunch to the delight of these children of the school. The Rotaract, Interact &Youth Service committee has shown the way with teamwork to bring some fantastic workshops on “Life Skills” for our Gen Next. Kudos to Programs and Fellowship during meeting committees for giving our club “finger lickin” programs and snacks. It is heartening to see the Rotary families participating and contributing to the Rotary International President Sakuji Tanaka's call of

“Peace through Service” as and when they are called upon. There is more in store in the coming month as more committees and members get into action, more generous people keep joining our cause every day. Enjoy Rotary! Cheers

Anger

The bane of any living being; That aspect which does not serve any one well; Yet residing in every one, though in different proportions. Anger!!!! There are people who are (in)famous for their anger. They believe in letting their steam out at every available opportunity. They will lash out at everyone or everything that does not go or see their way. The anger is at times justified, at most times, not. There are things which go in such people's favour. They are always feared and no one rubs them the wrong way. The fear starts bordering on to respect, simply because no one wants to invite their wrath or have them on their wrong side. There are others who will always be taken for granted. Because they will take flak and anything dished out at them. They will take differences in opinion or unjust behaviour in their stride with elan. Is it that such people are specially created in such a way that anger is alien to them? I think these people have the special ability to control their anger followed by best efforts in that direction. Probably because they hate to hurt others or because they prefer the dignity of silence or maybe because they are timid and just cannot hit back. Whatever the reason, the consequences are the same. Such people are liked by most. The respect for such people may not stem out of fear, but eventually comes about because of the dignity that they display. While these are extreme cases that we are analyzing, most fall somewhere in between on the anger quotient. It is for us to decide whether we want people to respect us out of fear. And in the process avoid us whenever they can. Or have people love us and eventually respect us for what we are and search us out in a crowd. There are very many ways to have better control over your anger. As soon as I learn any one of them, you all will be first that I shall share it with. Love serves us better than fear does!!!! GUEST EDITOR Madhavi Naidu

10 on 10

We shall have a Guest Editor every month at the GO. Here the GEs will give expression to their creativity by writing about what they will. Past Editors of the GO will be seen in this space one by one. The idea has come into being so that these two pages will have something refreshingly new to offer every month, steering clear of the year mould. This month, our GE is Madhavi Naidu. Editor for 2 years, she has excelled in her role. Our Club won the Best Bulletin Award both times. She is a painter and if you want your house painted, she will refuse…… Ed.

There can never be just one aspect to life. It is too varied, interesting and unpredictable to limit to one. It’s about choices, likes, dislikes, experiences and emotions that make it what it is and when there are 10 of everything, it makes for a richer, fuller experience. These two pages that I have been given as Guest Editor contains just such a listing of 10’s that I hope you find interesting reading. And if you choose to give me marks to sum up these pages.... I hope it’s 10 on 10!!

10 Rotarians who rock! BRIJESH SAHU Give him a foot & he’ll take the whole floor ...literally! Fun loving, crazy, jiggly & cuddly, he believes in living life kingsize! ANNU DOONGAJI Careful what you say near her! She will use it against you to keep listeners in splits and you in a deep shade of embarrassed pink! DEODUTTA DASTURE Whether it is a spontaneous “Bharat Mata Ki...” after a meeting or playing a beggar with rustic elan, Deodutta is the earthy flavour of Rotary. VISHWAS SAHASRABHOJANEE

The perennial bachelor boy of the club. Equally at home spouting “Rotaryisms” on the mic or giving “brotherly” advice over a couple of drinks.

MONICA BHAGWAGAR Leave her out of anything at your own peril! Wants to be everywhere, is usually good at everything ... a “well-rounded” personality.

10 things to do before you die 4

Life is too short to sit around on the net all day reading about other people's experiences in life, so we have put together a nice little list of naughty and neat things to do before you get too old. 1. Paint graffiti It is possible that many of you will have already performed this task, but for those who haven't (myself included), why not

SHILPA AGRAWAL

Surprisingly talented & incredibly bubbly. She rocks the floor with twinkle-toes and evokes catcalls with her acting prowess. A fellowship favourite!

DR. SURAJIT HAZRA Sincerity personified, he cracks a mean joke with a straight face, making you squirm while he moves on to a Rotary topic with another! POONAM SETHI A grandma like no other! Her enthusiasm belies her age. Omnipresent & funny, she projects confidence & tops popularity charts. RAJAN BHATIA True blue Punju! You just can’t keep him down despite his seniority. At one with the old & young. Quick witted & charming. VIPUL GUPTA

World-traveller, nature lover and keen businessman. His seedha-sadha looks get people to do what he wants .. which is usually good!

give it a shot? All you are going to cost someone is the time cleaning up after you. Pick a nice clean spot and go to town with spray paint. Be careful not to put anything that will lead the cops to your door. 2. Participate in a police line up Doing so can be fun and you sometimes get a free lunch (though not always). If you do get to appear in a lineup, be sure you didn't commit the crime! Wear something fun like a tee-shirt that says “I did it” and be sure to look shifty.

3. Stay in the best suite This is something you have to do at least once in your life. Save up some money and book a night at the poshest hotel in your city and the most expensive suite. While you are there make sure you enjoy all of the benefits of the hotel like fabulous food, massages, pool, and spa. 4. Invent a cocktail There are thousands of spirits and liqueurs out there for the tasting so go to a liquor store, stock up, and try as many variations as you can. Stumble upon a great tasting cocktail to show off to your friends next time you have a party. Remember to keep a bucket handy after a night of tasting cocktails you will need it. 5. Realise a childhood dream Maybe you had a dream when you were a kid, that trip to New York or Paris, or singing before an audience that is not your family. Or even standing up to that bully who always made you cringe in school. 6. Take the world's most awesome roller-coasters There are many exciting roller-coasters in the world. The sheer scariness of sitting in a projectile that screams away at top speed without you having any kind of control over it, knowing that you may wet your pants at the next 100 foot drop is an experience not to miss. 7. Let Go Of Your Past Get closure on all your hurt, grievances and unhappiness of the past. Don't let your past weigh you down, don't carry it around and let it diminish your capacity to be happy and live your present and future life to the fullest. You live now, make the most of it. 8. Go Skydiving Just like bungee jumping, except this time you have no elastic cord, and you are jumping from MUCH higher up. Luckily you can do a tandem dive with an instructor, so you don't need to worry about when to open the parachute and how to steer it. I think this is the ultimate “Face your Fears” kind of activity you can do. 9. Drive a Lamborghini or Ferrari Fortunately, you can rent one for a few hours for just a fraction of the retail price, and it's something that you need to experience. The refinement, the raw power, the acceleration. And remember to take plenty of videos and photos. 10. Learn To Dance (Hip-Hop, Salsa, Jazz) Feel that rhythm move through your body and let it guide your arms, feet and entire body across the dance floor. Not everyone is born to be good at dancing, but with some practice you can definitely get good. Plus it's great exercise and tons of fun.

10 Picasso 2 fun facts 3

Why I chose Picasso, you may ask? ... Because he was a trendsetter, one of the most controversial characters in art and his life was full of drama.

1

Picasso's Full Name Has 23 Words Picasso was baptized Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad Martyr Patricio Clito Ruíz y Picasso. He was named after various saints and relatives. The "Picasso" is actually from his mother, Maria Picasso y Lopez. His father is named Jose Ruiz Blasco. When He Was Born, The Midwife Thought He Was Stillborn Picasso had such a difficult birth and was such a weak baby that when he was born, the midwife thought that he was stillborn so she left him on a table to attend his mother. It was his uncle, a doctor named Don Salvador, that saved him.

Picasso's First Word: Pencil It's like Picasso was born an artist: his first word was "piz," short of lápiz the Spanish word for 'pencil.' His father Ruiz, an artist and art professor, gave him a formal education in art starting from the age of 7. By 13, Ruiz vowed to give up painting as he felt that Pablo had surpassed him.

Picasso's Car Okay, it's not exactly his car, but I couldn't resist. 44-year-old mechanic Andy Saunders of Dorset, England, spent six months converting his old Citroen 2CV into a cubist work inspired by Pablo Picasso! Saunders named his car Picasso's Citroën, which is much better looking than the hohum Citroën.

Pablo's First Drawing At the tender young age of 9, Picasso completed his first painting: Le picador, a man riding a horse in a bullfight. Picasso was a Terrible Student Picasso chafed at being told what to do and he was often thrown into "detention": Picasso's First Job Picasso signed his first contract in Paris with art dealer Pere Menach, who agreed to pay him 150 francs per month (about US$750 today).

7

Did Picasso Steal the Mona Lisa? Actually no, but in 1911, when the Mona Lisa was stolen from the Louvre, the police took in Picasso's friend, the poet Guillaume Apollinaire. Apollinaire fingered Picasso as a suspect, so the police hauled him in for questioning.

8

Cubism: Full of Little Cubes In 1909, Picasso and French artist Georges Braque co-founded an art movement known as cubism. Actually, it was a French art critic Louis Vauxcelles who first called it "bizarre cubiques" or cubism, after noting that Picasso and Braque's paintings are "full of little cubes."

9

Picasso was a Playboy Being a famous artist certainly helped Picasso get the girl. Girls, in fact - many, many girls. He was 23 when he had his first girlfriend (who was 18) and he was 79 when he had his last (she was 27)

1. Back to the Future : A cheery “Welcome to Hill Valley” sign, bearing the Rotary emblem, greets visitors in 1955 and 2015 to the fictional California, USA, hometown of Michael J. Fox in the Back to the Future trilogy. 2. Big Love : Fond childhood memories of Rotarian relatives inspired Mark V. Olsen, co-creator of the award-winning HBO series Big Love, to incorporate Rotary throughout the first season. 3. The Bodyguard : The movie's final scene takes place at a meeting of a large, prominent Rotary club in Iowa Rapids, Iowa, USA, where Frank has moved on to his next assignment: guarding a mafia-fighting Presbyterian reverend. 4. Can't Hardly Wait : Can't Hardly Wait, a 1998 teen film starring Jennifer Love Hewitt, shows yearbook entries for the main characters and their achievements including fighting Polio with the Rotary Club. 5. Carson and Martin : Born 20 years apart, Johnny Carson and Steve Martin rank among the most prominent and influential comedians of their generations. Both got their start performing magic acts at Rotary clubs. 6. Catch Me If You Can : Near the start of the film, Frank (Leonardo DiCaprio) watches with admiration as his father (Christopher Walken) addresses the Rotary Club of New Rochelle, N.Y., USA, in 1963, after becoming the 58th person in club history to receive its lifetime membership award. 7. Cedar Rapids : In the 2011 movie Cedar Rapids, Sales rep Joan (Anne Heche), shows Tim (Ed Helms) a family photo: Joan: That's my hubby. We met when we were Rotary exchange students in high school. 8. Charade : In the 1963 film Charade, bad guy James Coburn wanders a market where merchants are selling rare stamps including one that commemorates the 50th anniversary of Rotary, in 1955. 9. Curb Your Enthusiasm : Larry David, star of the HBO mockumentary Curb Your Enthusiasm, tries to get into an exclusive country club. Dressed in a navy blazer and red, white, and blue tie, he talks about his “schooner” at the interview and impresses the men by mentioning that he is a Rotarian. 10. Dick Tracy : Al Pacino as villain Big Boy Caprice proclaims: “We will become the people's silent partner. We'll dress like bankers, join the Rotary club. Together we will own this town.”

10 Home Improvement Tips Our homes are an extension of who we are: what we do within their walls shapes our mood, affects our productivity, and influences our outlook on life. 1. Make your bed. 2. Bring every room back to "ready." 3. Display sentimental items around your home. 4. Start a one-line-a-day gratitude journal. 5. Stop hoarding, clear out clutter. 6. Before you get up, set an intent for the day.

7. Do small favors for your housemates, expecting nothing in return (not even a thank you!). (That's right, I said it: nothing!) 8. Call at least one friend or family member a day. 9. Spend money on things that cultivate experiences at home. 10. Spend a few minutes each day connecting with something greater than yourself. Whatever your spiritual beliefs or non-beliefs may be.

Dear IPP Tauby, I have been privileged to receive regular issues of the Golden Orange. There are very few Club Bulletins/Magazines that I read from cover to cover and yours is on top of the list. Although I have been to Nagpur fairly often, I have never had the pleasure of attending your meetings. But what I do know of RC Nagpur is, it is one of the best clubs in D 3030, in its fellowship and service to the Community. I have read your 'Tauby's Last Take” and I must compliment you on the inspirational and

motivating message you have concluded your tenure with. You have led the club with great distinction and I congratulate you on your outstanding leadership. There are several qualities that make a great club. Apart from programs and fellowship, I have always believed that diversity of membership is one of the important hallmarks of an excellent Club. In your own words, you have aptly stated: “in the diversity of our members I found great strength”. Both PDGS- Bobby and Vishwas- are good friends and I am always happy to see articles by them in “Golden Orange”. It is a superb publication and I congratulate PP Shabbir on

12TH JULY- A MUSICAL EVENING

Singers All The hills came alive in the Sound of Music, but on the 5th of July, it won't be inappropriate to say, that the meeting came alive with the Sound of Music..A thumping success, was the first meeting of Atul Shah. Well begun is half done, they say. Chairperson Geeta Rao with Poonam Sethi and Ganesh Joshi, conceptualized a novel way, of going down memory lane of rotary with popular Hindi songs from that era..As far back

President Atul's first Meeting as 1940's all the way upto 2012, memoirs of Rotary then and now, went hand in hand with music of that time. A whopping 21 singers of our club, came forward to render some unforgettable numbers. The hall was spilling over to say the least, and the program was well appreciated. Once again our club has shown that it has no dearth for talent, and all seem to take "time out" to ensure that the program is a success.

REGULAR MEETING

The record attendance Music interspersed with commentary was well handled by Vishwas, and the musical team of Pankaj more than covered by the flaws of our amateur artistes. Once again, a job well done by Geeta Rao, and her assistants, Poonam and Ganesh. A special thanks to Dr's. Anita and Ajay Sood for letting the team use their home for the practice sessions. Looking forward to more such evenings! -Anita Chitaley

19TH JULY - AWAKENING OF INNER CONSCIOUS‌. It's a beginning of new age of spirituality said our guest speaker Dr. Yugandhar GR a General Surgeon, Spiritual Teacher and Workshop trainer. He has clubbed Medical Science with Spiritual science and has started a new system and style of practice called as Transformational Medicine which actually causes transformation of mind and life leading to Self-Realisation thus putting an end to all disease and suffering. During the meeting he made all members to meditate a while and concentrate on their pattern of breathing. The joys, peace, and success of life all depends on each person's pattern of breathing. So, correct way of breathing is very important for everyone and this comes only with the right posture and state of mind. Dr. Yugandhar also explained the importance of keeping the

''child' 'in every person alive. We should never supress the child in us. This will help every person to be agile, humble, curious, innocent, pure and ultimately happy. All in all the members, who were there in very good number, were very cooperative and participated in the activity, which resulted in creating a positive aura and an atmosphere of total peace. Dr. Yugandhar personally commented and complemented the club

members and expressed that he could feel the positive vibration in the hall. This I believe is a very strong point for our club that enables it to achieve what we want in our life. Rotary ann Divya Sharma introduced our guest and Rotarian Dr.Bharati Gidwani very aptly proposed a n appropriate vote of thanks on behalf of all members -Geeta Rao

26 JULY - THE RISE AND FALL OF DOLLAR On the backdrop of current economic environment in India, which presents a grim picture, an interesting talk was organized on 26th July regular meeting. The speaker was Mr Jatin Damani from Mumbai who is the head of currency derivatives division at Bonanza Financial Services Ltd, Mumbai. The falling price of national currency against other currency is often perceived as sign of weak economy. But how far is it true? Mr Jatin explained in simple manner the intricacies of currency market and the reasons for fluctuations in the price of rupee. Contrary to common perception there are many sectors of the economy, which in fact benefit from the falling rupee. The IT industry, which is now, a torchbearer of the Indian economy is one such

industry that gains immensely from weak currency. Many like export intensive sectors, hospitality industry are other sectors benefitting from fall in rupee. But unfortunately these are only few who benefit, majority of the sectors lose out due to weak currency. India being dependent for it energy requirement on oil imports is always at the receiving end. High oil prices coupled with weak currency are a double whammy for the economy. According to Mr Damani the major problem lies within the country like lack of policy decision and poor economic environment. These factors are very much within the control of Indian government and unless these things are set right we will continue to see weak rupee. The speaker also explained some derivative

strategies which businessman can use to hedge their currency risk. Earlier President greeted members on their birthdays and anniversary. Rtn Anuj Badjate introduced the speaker and Rtn Parag Paranjpe proposed a vote of thanks. -Parag Paranjpe

INSTALLATION 2012-13 It was a day of FIRSTS for the Rotary Club of Nagpur! The FIRST President ever to take over from the FIRST Lady President! As the gavel and collar changed hands the reigns of the Club were yet again handed over at a meticulously planned Installation. As the new incumbent was pinned by the out-going President, it was yet another smooth transition! This memorable evening was the installation ceremony of Rtn. These words hold true majorly for our Club that has been through 67 Installations and witnessed the Rotary wheel gaining momentum with each passing year, bringing it to its present glory. Yes, it was the Coke jingle –“Umeed waali Dhoop/Sunshine waali asha…..Sung by Saarthak Rao, Kanishka Pawar , Ananya Naidu, Vedant Jaiswal , Rashel Bhati, Neerja Sutaria and Yash Goenka the song very well depicted the spirit of Rotary, of hope , of service, of fellowship and of peace. The camp began at 10.30 AM at the training hall in an absolutely upbeat mood. The HR department had managed this very well by ensuring that there was a steady flow and no rush for donations. 'Leading by example' seemed to be the leadership style of General Manager Mr. Bhupinder Gill, his wife and HR Manager Mamta Sharma. They motivated the entire staff by volunteering to be amongst early

ROTARY CLUB OF NAGPUR – 5 JULY 2012

A renewed sense of enthusiasm was in the air as members of our club started arriving at Hotel Centre Point for this 'Members Only' blood donation camp. The day was also to witness, later in the evening, another change of guard at our experienced club. With the turn of another page in its rich history, committed Rotarians with their spouses & children started their day by donating blood. The 'Sammelan' hall has been a witness to our club activities for several years but the

excitement and anticipation has never faded. The camp started at 8.00 AM and the honour of being the first donor was willingly accepted by Raunak Shah, our President's son for the third consecutive year. More Rotarians arrived in different moods - some in their jogging outfits while some others wanting to rush to their offices directly. They had routines to follow and businesses to conduct but their commitment to a good cause did not falter. Incentive came in the form of delicious

sandwiches, cookies, biscuits, tea and coffee as the blood count rose steadily. Rtn. Micky Arora, owner-Hotel Centre Point and our very own Rotarian unfailingly made this venue available to us. We thank him from our hearts for his generosity. Overruling the earlier tradition of equaling the collection to our club's age, our enthusiastic Rotarians contributed a big figure of 79 units. Rotarians attended this camp included President Atul Shah, First Lady Shefali Shah, Hon. Secy. Shabbar Shakir, PDG Vishwas, PP Rajan Bhatia, PP Gulab Mahant, PP Shabbir Shakir, IPP Tauby Bhagwagar, Dinesh Naidu, Dr. Ravi Wankhede, Dr. Sheela Mundhada, Directors Parag, Sandeep, Manjot, Manish & Shivkumar, President Elect Prashant Kale, Dr. Shaunak Mokadam, chairpersons and other members. -Prashant Rajurkar rd

Ishan M Kinkhede, the younger son of Rtn. Madhav & Hema Kinkhede, a Mechanical Engineer, has made the grade and has been selected for the commission in the technical wing of the Indian Air Force. He has joined the IAF Academy at Dundigal (Hyderabad) where he commenced his training and then move to IAF technical College at Bangalore where he will undergo further training for a year, before getting his commission. Ishan is an image personified. It is his desire to study further in Aeronautical Engineering. Ishan took the AFCAT as a challenge to himself. The main purpose of the AFCAT interviews is to recruit officers who can handle the affairs well. The basic idea of the interview is to judge the attitude and capability of an aspirant. Narrating his experience about presenting himself in front of the IAF panelist, Ishan says “The interview Board was very friendly. They mostly asked questions based on my resume and my educational background. A number of questions were asked to check my commitment and values. The group discussions were good exercise to test how the candidate applies his mind on a particular situation. Apart from being knowledge-able about contemporary issues, you should be thorough with your hobbies and other interests. Ishan is an ex student of Modern School. He said that beside his parents, his teachers in school & college are the motivating factors who gave him all the encouragement to join the Academy. A brief stint in NCC made him more determined to join Indian Air Force. The untiring guidance of all has enabled him in joining the coveted Air Force. He is indebted to them all. Ishan did his Mechanical Engineering from YCCE College Nagpur, while his elder brother Rajan is an Electrical Engineer, presently in England doing his Masters in Engineering Project Management.

TREASURE HUNT

Fall In L ine

Board of Directors' Fall in Line This year we shall be presenting a Treasure Hunt every month . The basic idea is to help members know each other better , improve their Rotary knowledge , understand Rotary way of working and Educate n Entertain. In the puzzle above, you have to search for surnames of 23 Rotarians who are/were members of our Club's Board of Directors in Rotary Year 2012-13/ 2011-12. No Rocket Science..... All that you have to do is to pick up your club file/Membership Roster , refer the names of Board members and start locating them in the Ding Dong, in a single straight line, in any possible direction....left to right, right to left, top to bottom, bottom to top, slanting left to right, slanting right to left, slanting top to bottom or bottom to top. Simple ! Isn't it? After spotting these 23 enthusiastic, dedicated and talented club officers, unscramble the remaining 31 letters to get the name and surname of Rotary International's Numero Uno , who hails from Japan. Having done this, you will still be left with 19 unused letters spread helter skelter.Using all these, build his thoughtful RI theme for the current Rotary year. Five couples inducted into Arch C. Klumph Society on India Day Rotary Foundation Trustee Ashok Mahajan salutes Arch C. Klumph Society inductees for their generous gifts to The Rotary Foundation during the India Day induction ceremony on 19 June in Evanston. Rotary Images/Monika Lozinska The Rotary Foundation inducted five couples from India into the Arch C. Klumph Society on 19 June. The society honors those who give at least US$250,000 to the Foundation. Attendees at the ceremony, held at Rotary International World Headquarters in Evanston, included the consul general of India in Chicago, Mukta Tomar, and several Rotary senior leaders with their spouses. India is the second-largest Rotary country in the world, with more than 121,000 Rotarians. "As we induct our friends as members of the Arch C. Klumph Society, we salute their generosity in putting India among the topgiving nations to The Rotary Foundation," said Foundation Trustee Ashok Mahajan. Sajjan and Chanda Goenka Sajjan Goenka is managing director of Texport Industries Ltd., which manufactures and exports clothing. A member of the Rotary Club of Bombay West and a past district governor, Goenka called global polio eradication his "utmost desire" and credited Mahajan with inspiring him, his brothers, and his son to contribute to Rotary's effort to wipe out the disease in India. He made his gift to the Foundation in honor of his late parents, Deviprasad Gangabux Goenka and Shivdevi Deviprasad Goenka. "Because of [Sajjan's] efforts, scores of people in need have been given access to cataract surgeries, thousands of students have been educated in a state-of-the-art secondary school, and ample supplies of blood have been collected," said 2011-12 RI President Kalyan Banerjee. He was referring to medical camps sponsored by the Goenka family foundation, a school established by Goenka in his role as general secretary of a Hindu association, and a blood bank created by the Bombay West club with the help of the family foundation and a Rotary Foundation Matching Grant. As a district governor in 1982-83, Goenka said, he looked to then-Rotary International director Rajendra K. Saboo (who later served as 1991-92 president) as his "mentor and guru," adding, "I was deeply touched by his philosophy of service and his message that we must always try to enhance the image of the organization to which we belong."

Sudhansu and Mina Bhattacharyya Sudhansu Bhattacharyya is a cardiac surgeon, and his wife, Mina, is a retired professor of gynecology. "Sharing is a must in today's times," he said. "There comes, in the life of an individual, a stage when he gets an inner drive to give to the society what he has earned from the society. The donor is more blessed than anybody else.” Mahajan referred to Bhattacharyya as "the first doctor to bring cardiac surgery to India. [He] operates on all socioeconomic classes of people, from political figures to film personalities to the very poor, on whom he operates free of charge.” A member of the Rotary Club of Bombay Central, Bhattacharrya said he supports Rotary International because it is a grassroots organization with a diverse membership that

“works tirelessly for the uplifting of the community." He praised the Foundation for its transparency and stewardship. Habil F. and Nafisa Khorakiwala Habil Khorakiwala chairs Wockhardt Ltd., a global health care enterprise, and also established the Wockhardt Foundation, which operates a fleet of medical vans to provide care in rural and remote areas. Trustee Mahajan called the Wockhardt Group "one of the finest health care institutes in India" and said that more than 44 million people have received medical care through the Wockhardt Foundation. A member of the Rotary Club of Bombay North, Khorakiwala also established the Wockhardt HIV/AIDS Education and Research Foundation, known as WHARF, which offers free training for health care providers. Nafisa chairs the organization and assists programs that provide nutrition to HIVinfected children. Said Habil: "One of the unique contributions that Rotary has made to my life is it has provided a balance. We have been able to

create an ethos in our organization that business obviously has to have profit, but that's not good enough; it has to be acceptable to the community and society in which we live.” Rajju and Sandra Shroff Rajju Shroff chairs United Phosphorous, a leading agrochemical firm in India. He and his wife, Sandra, established the Sandra Schroff Nursing College and the Rajju Shroff Institute of Management Studies, several schools, and a 250-bed hospital. Both are members of the Rotary Club of Vapi. Banerjee, also a member of the Vapi club, credited Rajju with introducing him to Rotary. He called Shroff "an innovator who is responsible for much scientific progress" in the chemical industry. "He helped develop medical facilities in areas around his fledgling businesses and he helped those areas to grow and develop healthy communities," Banerjee said. "Rotary has often been a game changer in the lives of young people," said Sandra. She also referred to the polio eradication campaign as a "path-breaking project. I have no doubt in my mind that Rotary leaders such as Kalyan Banerjee have played an important part in getting to where there has not been a case of polio [in India] for the last 16 months." Surya and Foram Varsani Foram Varsani, originally from India, is a member of the Rotary Club of Victoria, Mahé, Seychelles. She spoke movingly about her husband, Surya, who died in 2009 at the age of 39. He was an assistant district governor and a member of the Rotary Club of Golders Green, Greater London, England. "His passion was the kind that one feels like saluting. He truly lived the motto of Service Above Self," she said, and added that the contribution to The Rotary Foundation is in her husband's memory. "I couldn't believe the energy he had for all the commitments for running three businesses and to spend so much time and effort [to help] Rotary improve, to get more members for Rotary clubs, and to raise more funds.” V.J. Patel, who is Surya's father and a past district governor and Arch C. Klumph Society member, paid tribute to his son. "Surya joined Rotary before he was 25. . . . He had the hope of becoming a district governor. He also enjoyed the taste of giving and became a Major Donor. He had the wish to become an Arch C. Klumph Society member." The question for this month is: Is Amir Khan's targeting and exposing the ugly underbelly of the medical profession and the pharmaceutical industry wholly justified? Or is he hitting under the belt and giving the whole issue a negative and lopsided slant with an eye on the TRP's? PP Dr Manmohan Daga: Medical profession no longer remains a SACROSANCT and HOLIER THAN THOU Profession. It has been commercialized by Government, Society and even the General Public. The medical profession is now considered at par with any other commercial venture from EVERY POINT OF VIEW. If this is the status, then why this outcry? The society reaps what it sows! Whatever Amir Khan has portrayed could be PARTIALLY TRUE but tarring the whole profession if you find some incidents of misconduct is GROSS INJUSTICE to the others. This can have a hugely negative impact --- Theek hai, chalo ab to hamein karne ki chutti mili hai..!! OR from the patient's point of view - EVERY ACT WHICH WILL BE DONE BY THEIR DOCTORS SHALL BE SUSPECT and the LOSS OF FAITH IN PAT I E N T M A N A G E M E N T C A N BOOMERANG ON THE SOCIETY IN MANY WAYS. THINK. Dr Ravi Wankhede: I think the subject has been discussed at many forums and has long died its natural death. What Amir has done is exposed what is not expected of us medics. It does not affect medics who live by their oath. The others are bound to feel the heat. Sacchai kadwi hoti hai!! The good thing is people are now talking about generic drugs, etc.

X PRESS

Rita Dhodapkar: Though I profess to be educated, the medical profession and pharmaceutical industry is a topic which I never researched. Now I realize that blind faith in anyone except your nearest and dearest ones is foolish. However, one does lay a certain amount of trust in the doctor he/she visits. I for one was not aware that there are generic drugs available comparable in performance to branded drugs. A few unscrupulous professionals in any field are responsible for giving the whole profession a bad name. Kudos to Amir Khan for creating awareness of issues related to a common man.

Adv. Sudhir Puranik: I feel that what Amir Khan has done in Satyamev Jayate needs to be complimented. He has exposed the ugly underbelly of not only the medical profession but also of the pharma industry. However, despite all the kudos received by the said programme, I feel that it was highlighting mostly the negative side of these two fields. Mr. Khan could have balanced out the issue by highlighting the good sides/deeds also. Like for instance he could have shown a short documentary on Dr Prakash Amte or Dr Abhay Bang, who have been working tirelessly in the interiors of Maharashtra for the welfare of the tribals. In that sense the programme was albeit one sided.

Anula Goenka: With great power….comes great responsibility.........Amir Khan is known to be a non controversial Bollywood star...........he seems to be passionate about reaching out to the common man.....He has opened our eyes and even if a small section of society benefits from it ........it's worth his effort..........I have already told my workshop guys to check up on generic medicines before taking the prescription from the Dr.'s...........I had been advised a hysterectomy for myself & after the show I am convinced I may never need one..............Our country needs people like him to speak up ..............he is definitely not doing it just for the TRP'S........

Dr Hargun Sangtani: There are elements of truth in what Amir Khan had said, but the larger picture he portrayed about the medical profession is misleading. Medical facilities available in this country (in the private sector) are world class but unfortunately not everyone can afford it. The fact that we are getting so many patients from outside our country for treatment including from developed countries is evidence of the progress of medical profession in the country, that too without any support from the government!! The average lifespan of Indians is now nearing that of the developed countries. This has only been possible through the unparalleled efforts and dedication of doctors in this country.

The issue is too important to die a natural death ……. Nor should we allow it to! The trust deficit and communication gap between the medical profession and society needs to be bridged. Our society and government have failed in not being able to design and provide a health care delivery system which is just and fair and also reasonably efficient. In fact the politicians have gone out of their way to destroy whatever already existed so that the private sector medical colleges that they own flourish!! When parents have to spend over 2 crores to educate their children to become specialists and super-specialists and then borrow a few more crores to create the facilities for them to work in, we have already created businessmen doctors!! There's no point blaming doctors and chemists as a class…..they come from the same backgrounds as everybody else and therefore will have the same values, aspirations, flaws and black sheep!! The decay and deterioration in moral values, ethics, empathy and levels of honesty in society is bound to afflict all segments of society equally……no more, no less!! In today's lexicon, a dishonest person or a chalta-purza is considered 'smart and capable' while an honest and straightforward person is looked upon as being a 'simpleton or 'Buddhoo'. THAT is the new normal!! So be it!! (Readers may Xpress their view on this topic at jivsan17@yahoo.co.in) -PP Dr. Sanjiv Chugh

TRAVEL BUG Vindhya's Wishlist When I look back at all the travel I have done over the past decades, I find that, like countless others, I too have been stuck in the 'London, Paris, New York, Hawaii, Geneva, Rome, Athens and 'god knows how many others' syndrome.' Which basically means that of all the countries and continents I have visited in the past, nothing has really been OFF the beaten track. So this year I have decided to draw up a travel wishlist, of places and regions different from the run of the mill tourist destinations that everyone goes to. Places that offer something unique and unusual to the traveler. And the first exciting trip on my list is a visit to the Arctic Circle! This fascinating 7 day tour takes one into the innermost regions of Lapland and introduces us to the Sami culture and their way of living inside the Arctic Circle. This region, apparently comes alive in winter each year and one can take in a snow mobile safari, a reindeer ride, a stay in an Ice Hotel and do things one has only dreamt of! So, here are the itinerary details for a 7 day unique Scandinavian experience as I get ready to visit the land of Santa Claus. Our tour begins with our arrival at Ivalo airport, Finland's Northern most airport in the Arctic Circle! A local guide takes us to our hotel in Inari village where we spend the night. Day 2 begins with a visit to SIIDA – The Sámi Museum and Northern Lapland Nature Centre where one gets to see how nature and people have adapted to the extreme conditions of the Northern environment. Photographs, videos, dioramas, soundscapes and original artefacts guide us between the seasons and back

26

through the past times until today. We then visit local reindeer farm where one can feed the reindeer. Must try my hand at throwing the “suopunki” (Lappish lassoing), a traditional reindeer herder's skill, And learn to drive the Reindeer Sledge and earn my Reindeer Driving License ! Its time to cosy up in a Kota, a Lappish hut and hear stories about reindeer herding by an open fire. Snowmobiling next, and drive along the frozen Lake Inari, the 6th largest lake in Europe and see the Island of “Ukko”, an ancient sacrificial site of the Sámi people in Inari area. Day 3 takes me to Kirkenes in Norway. We drive through a scenic road through the Skolt Sámi Region. In the Sevettijärvi village, the Skolt Sámi centre, there is a small tradition house with an outdoor museum area and an orthodox church. The drive continues towards the Arctic Ocean and Kirkenes along the Neiden fjord. In Kirkenes, a special experience awaits! A stay at the Snow Hotel and a ride on a typical kick sled. Two unique experiences! As the name suggests Snow hotel is built entirely of snow! Its 20 rooms are individually decorated with furniture, sculptures and wall paintings all made out of ice carvings. There's a snow bar where one can enjoy a shot or two. Even the vodka glasses are made out of ice. We sleep on on ice beds. Warm thermal sleeping bags are provided for sleeping in and if needed warm clothing is also available. I've never done something like this in my life! Day 4 and we fly to Helsinki. Helsinki, the capital of the Republic of Finland, is full of contrasts and its identity has been formed by cultural influences from both the East and West. The beauty of the surrounding nature blends seamlessly together with hightech achievements, while old traditions mix

with the latest contemporary trends. Helsinki's rhythm is laid back yet at the same time refreshingly active in terms of both the number and quality of restaurants and nightclubs. After a panoramic Audio-City Tour ,we checkin ,late afternoon for the overnight cruise to Stockholm on day 5. Day 6, sees me wake up in Stockholm. A whole day at leisure to explore the city. The capital and the largest city of Sweden, Stockholm has long been Sweden's cultural, media, political and economic centres. There are two UNESCO World Heritage sites in the Stockholm area: The Royal Palace Drottningholm (within Ekerö Municipality) and the Skogskyrkogården (The Woodland Cemetery). Built during the eighteenth century in the Italian Baroque style, The Royal Palace is the official residence of His Majesty the King of Sweden and one of the largest palaces in Europe, with over 600 rooms. Then on to the Vasa Warship Museum. The Vasa is the only preserved seventeenth-century ship in the world, and a unique art treasure. More than 95 percent of the ship is original, and it is decorated with hundreds of carved sculptures. Stockholm's oldest attraction and one of the best preserved medieval city centres in the world is the Gamla Stan. Cannot wait to walk through small winding streets lined with stores full of handicrafts, antiques, art galleries and cafés, before returning to the ship for the overnight cruise back to Helsinki, and then on day 7 to catch flight back home. The best time to travel is in winter. The days are shorter but full of magic. The winter sports are in full bloom and it's the best time to see the Northern Lights. Can't wait!! -Vindhya Sanjana

SUBJECT: FW: TACKLING A CUSTOMER Here is a reported episode a Singapore Airline Desk Attendant has had with a rude customer. It is a good example to show how such a client could be tackled. You will certainly find it interesting. Though this was supposed to have taken place in Singapore, this could very well have been in India with our netas showing off their assumed and false importance! An episode at a Singapore Airline help desk in Sydney: An award should go to the Singapore Airlines desk attendant in Sydney, some months ago for being smart and funny, while making her point, when confronted with a passenger who probably deserved to fly as cargo. A crowded Singapore flight was cancelled

after SQ's 767s had been withdrawn from service. A single attendant was re-booking a long line of inconvenienced travellers. Suddenly an angry passenger pushed his way to the desk. He slapped his ticket down on the counter and said, "I HAVE to be on this flight and it HAS to be FIRST CLASS". The attendant replied, "I'm sorry, sir. I'll be happy to try to help you, but I've got to help these people first, and I'm sure we'll be able to work something out." The passenger was unimpressed. He asked loudly, so that the passengers behind him could hear,"DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHO I AM?" Without hesitating, the attendant smiled and

“The Foreign Hand" Quick! Name India's biggest politician. Hint : It's a she. No, it is not Mamata Didi, she is too busy driving Paschim Banga into the 19th Century. No, it is not Pratibha Patil, she is too busy consulting with Rukshad Bhagwagar on the interiors of her 2.3 million sq. Ft. Cottage on MG Road, Pune. No, it is not Mayawati, who has been beaten into submission by a young upstart despite her magnanimous gift of a thousand statues to a starving population. And no, it is not Rekha, she still hasn't figured out whether Sachin Tendulkar should sit next to her or on her lap in the Rajya Sabha. By now, if you have guessed Sonia Gandhi, you would be right but she would be 10 crores richer in the time it took you to stumble to that conclusion. I mean look at her excelling with her master strokes ever since she politically .... sorry, politely declined to be PM, when everyone and his mentor were falling all over themselves to crown her queen. With her most recent googly she has removed the only perceived threat from within her party to Rahul Baba's ascension to the throne. And Pranab Da calls it an honour to hold the country's top position! Wait till he has to go running to

madam for permission when he feels his bedroom colour needs to be a bit more cheerful. So efficiently has he been sidelined that by the time the euphoria of the position wears thin he will have realised that he has handed the driver's seat over to the newest Gandhi whose only claim to fame is his surname. In fact, most of our so-called political stalwarts and bigwigs would do well to take a leaf out of her book and revisit their strategies to boost their flagging political careers. I mean, here is a woman, whose Hindi is at best pedestrian, and whose nationality is still a matter of debate, running rings around them while they are left looking like sulking kids who have been refused an amusement park ride. Forget politicians, even our management gurus would do well to emulate her. She never loses sight of the bottomline while making her moves and like every businessman knows it is profits ... profits ... profits. If the recent megascams are any indication, then she and her cronies have already bled the country dry and are laughing their way to their favourite Swiss banks while the likes of Anna Hazare are left shooting blanks. Need more examples? How about Robert Vadra of Priyanka Gandhi fame

“OF AGNI MISSILES & TOILETS” A few weeks back India successfully launched its 'Agni' Missile, but that didn't seem to impress a Union minister who angrily retorted “No use launching Agni Missiles if there are no toilets”! This head line caught my eye so I read the entire article. It seems the Hon'ble Minister had gone to launch a different type of Missile close to the test firing range facility – a “Green Toilet” for the rural poor. He even suggested that these toilets be named 'Bapu' as a

BOBBY'S BUBBLES grabbed her public address microphone:"May I have your attention please, may I have your attention please," she began - her voice heard clearly throughout the terminal. "We have a passenger here at Desk 14 WHO DOES NOT KNOW WHO HE IS. If anyone can help him find his identity, please come to Desk 14." With the folks behind him in line laughing hysterically, the man glared at the Singapore attendant, gritted his teeth and said,"Damn You!" Without flinching, she smiled and said, (I love this bit) "I'm sorry, sir, but you'll have to get in line for that too.” -by Bobby Srinivas

DIMAAG KHARAB whose net worth has increased thousand-fold and not because of his astrologically aligned, numerically balanced, madam-blessed marriage, who also is the only non-VIP exempt from frisking at airports. Coming back to Pranab Da, even he would do well to count his blessings to be named the country's Numero Uno citizen following his not-so-inspiring performance as Finance Minister. Like every self-serving public official he, too, claimed the Presidency as his rightful throne leaving behind a ministry to incompetents and a country in shambles. Look at the economic legacy he is leaving behind. Economic growth has slowed, inflation been stubbornly high, borrowing costs have surged and the rupee declined amid a loss of investor confidence; rating agencies have downgraded the outlook on India's sovereign ratings. While he wants to be India's sovereign. With madam's blessings of course! -Sohrab Kanga

tribute to Mahatma Gandhi! In the picture on the right the Hon'ble Minister is about to inaugurate the “Bio toilet” (How does one inaugurate a toilet, I wonder?!). If you look carefully it would appear that one of his entourage had beaten him to the job & had forgotten to flush. The poor chap seems genuinely sorry! -PP Shiraz Gimi

MY WONDERFUL EXCHANGE My Short Term Rotary Exchange was to Portland, Oregon, USA. Yet, it was an experience of a lifetime: the people, the school, the teachers, and the fun. The different cuisine in America is wow! Every night I would clean the bathroom, empty the dish washer and some small work. I also cooked some Indian food for them, and they liked it, except they said it was too spicy! The family member I was closest to was my host father, Alan. We laughed, shared knowledge, we biked together, played basketball, debated over some topics, and really got to know each other. I also got to know my Mom, Jo; we went to her factory where they make fruit products. It was good I came out to know the different American fruits, a lot of which we don't have here. America is a huge, diverse country and I got a first-hand glimpse of this diversity in my visits to many places. The days flew by but the bond between me and my host family just increased: I was family now. Every bit of it is missed by me, now that I am back. I have learned so much, I have realized the world is too big but we are all same in some way or the other. The diversity everywhere is a lot, so the differences increase, but as cultures even we are not so far apart. On a personal level, the exchange has helped me to realize my potential. I really feel that this experience has changed my life, and my host family and Rotary Club have made it all possible. If anyone wants to know more please contact me. I would love to have sit down over coffee and talk about it. -Shiv Sial

TRENDING TOPIC – LONDON DREAMS – Everyone knows about the London Olympics and everyone is optimistic about India's chances in it. Let us remind ourselves that cricket is not an Olympic sport and hence let us look at the other events in which we can perform. After a wonderful performance in the commonwealth games this Olympic will have approximately 60 countries more we need to compete with. Let us look at our chances in the following sports… Bhupathi, Bopanna, Paes & Politics: It will be tough for Indian tennis to leave a mark in London Olympics…. ( Well we have to give up our petite arguments in order to win in Lawn Tennis, the grass is not green on this side) Wrestling will surely win us some medals, as Hulk Hogan is retired and Undertaker is still a dead man walking… Best of luck Sushil Kumar… Our Hockey team should bring Laurels to the country… ( “Unke pass sirif sattar minutes hai”) CHAK DE!!!!!! Saina Nehwal should make the Country proud again and surely lot of expectations are shuttling on her…. In case of shooting Abhinav Bindra and Gagan Narang will aim high and centre to win the gold. ( Do not try this at home or at school or ANYWHERE) The Arrows are likely to hit the Bulls eye, all the best to Jayanta Taludar and team and Deepika Kumari and team.. We will not come back empty-handed: Vijender Singh…. Well you would be wearing your gloves, hope your neck is also adorned with the coveted pendent. All the best Mary Kom, let your weight fly! India is sending an 81 strong athlete team to London, this will be India's largest contingent ever at the games. It will be a pleasant surprise if the lone swimmer or our athletics team win any medals. But let us all hope that we do better than Beijing, if we are not putting the Thames on fire! -Nishchay Sinha FROM THE LITTLE HEARTS I am Aashna, I am 8 years old and I'm fond of listening to the stories especially the ones that my nanu (grand father) tells me. He lives in Rajasthan . Whenever I visit him, he tells me the stories of Rajput kings. He narrates the stories with a lot of enthusiasm. I'm sharing a story which I like to hear again and again. This story is about Maharana Pratap. He was a brave king of Mewar. He was 7 feet tall and weighed more than 100 kgs! His hands touched his knees! He wore an armor which weighed more than 50 kgs! He fought many battles against mughals. Mughals captured his fort in Udaipur. So he fought the battles from his hideouts in hills. He and his small troop slept on the ground and ate rotis made from grass. Maharana Pratap was defeated by Akbar in the battle of Haldighati, but his horse Chetak saved his life by jumping of a huge brook, sacrificing his own life. Maharana Pratap fought till the end of his life but never gave up. Maharana Pratap also built a monument in the memory of his faithful horse Chetak which my nanu has promised me to show, when I visit him this time. -Aashna Ajmera

I've been a fool, if there's one thing I can tell you about me and what I thought about the world, it would be that! When I went for my first holiday abroad, Bangkok, I shopped, hopped, saw and went all over and when I got back I proudly claimed “I've lived the Bangkok way of life” and this went on with each holiday. I'd claim I knew “how the Turkish did it” or in “the German way”! ........little did I know.......... Through the Rotary Short Term Exchange this year I left for Oregon America. And yes this time too I told myself that I'm going to be seeing their way of life just like the others. But when I got to the airport and got my bags ,I was picked up by Sarah and her family and taken HOME, that's right, not a hotel ,not a guest house but HOME. And that's when it all hit me. All this time I've been seeing places as a tourist. You'd never know as a tourist “if the gas prices have gone up” or “last summer it wasn't as hot” or even how to vacuum an entire house! Jokes apart, it's been a great experience, to actually live at a person's house and experience their day to day life in that country was amazing. Joining a school there, meeting all kinds of people. For me it's a dream come true. I couldn't be luckier! I know 9 weeks is not a very long time, but I enjoyed and made the most of every second. One of the most important things I've learnt throughout this trip….love, laughter and concern: some things never change, no matter where you go! -Shyla Bhagwagar

The 3 senior most Rotary Clubs in Asia The first club ever chartered (founded) in Asia is the Rotary Club of Manila (June 10, 1919) followed by the Rotary Club of Calcutta (September 26, 1919), and the Rotary Club of Shanghai (October, 1919) However, RC Calcutta is the longest operating club in Asia (and the first Rotary Club in India) because the Rotary clubs in the Philippines and Shanghai ceased to operate during World war II.

Investment Tips There is an old Chinese proverb - 'May you all live in interesting times'.Investment climate as you know, is always interesting. The challenges here are ever present, no matter which stage of life you are in. It all depends how you look at it. Indians fortunately are inherently blessed with the habit of high savings. In fact India is sometimes referred to as nation with great savers but poor investors. Obviously, the question that comes to mind is what separates savings from investments? Firstly, every time you invest, you are exposed to a factor called risk.Savings on other hand does not involve risk. Secondly, you save what is left after spending from your earning while invest for long term. There is another school of thought. Instead of Earning-Expense = Savings, one should opt for EarningsSavings=Expenses. And finally you sacrifice time and effort to choose and eventually earn meaningful result from investments. (At least you are supposed to) Risk has different meaning to different people. One of the famous quote of Warren Buffet is'Risk is not knowing what you are doing'. Strictly from financial point of view there are many risks associated with investments. It could be Credit risk, Liquidity risk, Market risk, Taxation risk, Inflation risk, Reinvestment risk, Currency risk, and Political or Regulatory risk. Each and every investment will have exposure to one or more of the above-mentioned risk in different proportion. Problem is we want an instrument that carries no default risk; gives highest possible returns, can be easily liquidated and ofcourse pays regularly. But that's just not possible. Question often asked is,what is the best asset class for investment? Is it Equities, Bonds, Gold, Art, Collectibles or Real Estate? The answer is in fact very simple. As a prudent investor one has to choose an investment, which best suites his/herinvestment time frame, requirement and risk appetite. There are three important factors to look at while choosing a particular investment class. These are need, ability and willingness to embrace the risk associated with that investment.Getting obsessed with a particular investment or returns can be a risky proposition. Going forward we will discuss ideas, tips & tricks, do's& don'ts of investment and it's planning. Idea is to make youthink before act. Till then… Save…save…save. -Parag Paranjpe
