President’s Message A new team takes over the mantle with r e n e w e d e n e r g y, v i g o u r a n d commitment. The methods may change but our mission remains the same, that of service. Our relevance in society is because we believe in addressing peoples's needs and do our bit to 'change lives'. Our club has been involved for years in serving humanity. R.I President John Germ reminds us and takes us back to basics with the theme, Rotary Serving Humanity. We are committed to many more in our endeavor to serve humanity. “Change” is constant. As we try to change many past activities, we have been successful in installation of 21

Interact Schools in one day, which kick starts our endeavor to streamline the working of the club. Kodo's to the team for such smooth conduct of the entire programme. We are committed to carry on projects which show sustainability and therefore many activities are going through a re-think. STOP, KEEP, EVOLVE is the new mantra. Stop which has outlived its usefulness, Keep - those that are sustainable in the long run and Evolve - with newer ideas and projects that show sustainable growth in future. Fewer projects but sustainable projects is the way forward. I see frenzied activity already in IYE, Interact, Rotaract, Green City and

Micro Credit. Coming ahead is Pinkathon and Monsoon Fellowship. So, a lot to look forward to in the year……… -Alok Goenka

My Thoughts... As Neale Donald Walsch has said "Most people believe if they 'HAVE' a t h i n g ( m o r e t i m e , m o n e y, love—whatever), then they can finally DO a thing (write a book, take up a hobby, go on vacation, buy a home, undertake a relationship), which will allow them to BE a thing (happy, peaceful, content, or in love). In actuality, they are reversing the Be-DoHave paradigm. “ In the universe as it really is (as opposed to how you think it is), 'havingness' does not produce 'beingness,' but the other way around. First you BE the thing called HAPPY (or 'knowing,' or 'wise,' or 'compassionate,' or whatever), then you start DOING things from this place

of beingness—and soon you discover that what you are doing winds up bringing you the things you've always wanted to HAVE. The way to set this creative process (and that's what this is … the process of creation) into motion is to look at what it is you want to 'have,' ask yourself what you think you would BE if you 'had' that, then go right straight to being. In this way you reverse the way you've been using the Be-Do-Have paradigm—in actuality, set it right—and work with, rather than against, the creative power of the universe. So lets focus on being happy and then BE and DO to achieve our dreams. This

year's Rotary's theme is Rotary Serving Humanity and the club has lined up an impressive list of projects to hold high this theme. Lets all participate in these projects and lets all collectively strive to achieve our goal. Welcome to a new Rotary year 16-17 -Hetal Sampat

personally. The dedication of the Ashram's volunteers and the inmates has shown remarkable results over the years. A cheque for Rs 75,000/- was given to the Ashram. On 4th July, we handed over a cheque for Rs 40,000/- to the Principal of Bishop Cotton School to support the underprivileged students unable to deposit their school fees and buy books. IPP Khushnoor Chugh along with Director Sandip Dhodapkar and Chairpersons Sapna Vastani & Rajiv Behal were present. Later in the day, we visited the office of Friends of Tribal Society which runs Ekal Vidyalaya in rural areas. They are, at present, operating more than 40,000 such schools with a concept of “one teacher one school” in the remotest of the remote areas, purely on donations. Our club has sponsored 4 such schools by handing over Rs 1 lac. Those present were PP Rajan Bhatia, Neeru Bhatia, Shailja Pingle, Monal Malji, Director Sandip Dhodapkar and Chairperson Rajiv Behal. Abhyudaya Global Village School, located at Khapa – about 35 km from Nagpur, is a unique concept of education centre for village children where they are taught modern concepts of all aspects of agriculture in addition to the regular curriculum up to Class X. The pioneers of this concept (Vikalpa) is a young & dynamic couple Bhagyashree & Sachin

Deshpande, both engineers by qualification, now dedicating their lives for the education of the farmers' children after sacrificing their respective professional careers. They are also in the process of adopting 30 children whose farmer father committed suicide in Wardha District. A cheque for Rs 75,000/was handed over for the education of these children by PP Gulab Mahant. Also present were PP Rajan Bhatia, Neeru Bhatia, Director Sandip Dhodapkar and Chairperson Rajiv Behal. Immediately thereafter, the same team reached School for Deaf & Dumb at Saoner. Here we felicitated students who scored more than 70% in Class X Board Exams. Despite their disability, 7 out of total 10 students achieved that level of success. One has to appreciate the hard work put in by the staff and students of the institute. Each of these students was given Rs 2,500/- with an assurance of further support in their higher education. The invaluable smiles that we could etch on so many faces over these days made us feel like we were sitting amongst blooming sunflowers. And this would not have been possible without the ardent support of each of the 197 contributors to your PROJECT SMILING FACES. -Rajiv Behal

July 21st Education for 13 years and has guided and taught students almost all subjects including personality development skills. He owns a theatre group 'Rampunch' which stages socially relevant plays. He writes, acts and directs them too. Currently he holds workshops on the Bhagwad Gita and guides how to implement the learning of the same in daily life and this was the topic that he had chosen to speak for in the Rotary gathering. 'Bhagwad Gita and its misconceptions. Whether they are true or not?' 'Did Mahabharata really happen: These are the questions we ask ourselves many a times and it will be extremely positive & enriching IF ?we read it with an open mind! The Bhagwad Gita is NOT a

'religious' book that 'preaches' you to follow Hinduism. It is a book that offers solutions to the problems & dilemmas we face in our lives (even in these times). All we need to do is learn to apply the knowledge from it to our lives! ?Some say that The Gita is a 'War mongering scripture where n number of times the speaker tells Arjuna to stand up and fight, but fighting does not happen by picking up weapons only, we all have our battles to fight and fears to overcome. He gave many examples and beautifully explained the paradoxes in the Gita. These contradictions were created so that knowledge does not fall into wrong or unworthy people. Lastly he adds,' Action does not guarantee a result but no action is a guarantee of no result.' He was open to answer many queries from the audience too. Rtn Anjuli Minocha gave the vote of thanks and the meeting was adjourned after the National Anthem. -Chetna Singhal

Thinking Caps On A Fascinating Novel about a fascinating time - “The Twentieth Wife” ,the name itself is enough to catch hold of the book. Born in New Delhi and brought up on Air Force bases around India, Economics and Operation research graduate in U.S. and gifted story teller with obvious passion of History, 'Indu Suderesan'– is the writer of Rich, Realistic, and Delicious Story of “The Twentieth wife”. “The Twentieth wife” is a story of Mehrunnisa who is one of the most Legendary and Controversial women of that time. The twentieth wife of Prince Salim whose love shaped the course of Mughal Empire. She was the daughter of Gias Beg, a refugee from Persia who was the Son of wazir of Isfahan. Gias Beg

-Sakina Master travelled to India with his wife and four children hoping that benevolent Emperor Akbar, would give him a position at court, and help him start a new life. Gias Beg named his daughter “Mehrunnisa” meaning “sun among women” which she upheld throughout her life; beautiful physically as well as in spirit, her smile, her laughter, mesmerised everyone around. Mehrunnisa first encountered Salim on his wedding day. Eight years old at that time she decided she too will one day become Salim's wife – unaware of the price she has to pay for this dream. She was a rare combination of astonishing beauty, extreme brilliance & a rock solid determination. The King was deeply in

love with her, And he aspired to add her to his harem…..and keep her like one of his other Cacubines…..but Mehrunnisa was not the type of woman to compromise on those terms. In short ,The Twentieth wife is a gift for history lovers and if you are not one of them then this book will create that charming interest in you. Read this book and enjoy the beauty with the rich imaginations of fairy tale which sweeps readers up in the emotional pageant of Salim and Mehrunnisa's Love.

IT HAPPENS ONLY IN INDIA Only in India would a father borrow tremendous sums of money at atrocious interest rates to get his daughter married, but will not spend a fraction of it on her education. Only in India do people feel terrified in the presence of Police personnel rather than feeling secure. Only in India people will cross a red signal risking life and limb of self and others, but will stop instantly if a black cat cuts across their path. Only in India would you find people divided by religions, languages and cultures, yet unified by a single foreign language – English. Only in India is progress in spite of the Government and bureaucracy, not because of it. Only in India would you find an actor playing cricket, a cricketer playing politics, politicians watching porn and a porn star becoming an actress. Only in India a person thinks twice before even talking to a stranger but thinks nothing of a perfect stranger to spend a lifetime with through an arranged marriage. Only in India does politics divide us but terrorism unites us. Only in India is it ok to piss in public, but not kiss in public.

One night , when you are suddenly awakened by your parents and asked,' beta, Austria aur Czech Republic chaloge ?' . No.. Would have been the stupidest answer! So, when the same asks you to pen down an article on it , ' No' ... Is pretty much not an option!! After months of planning and packing (apparently that's the minimum a woman takes to decide her apparels for 8 long days of vacation ;) and about a total of '18945' selfies later ( for show off purpose.. You know !) we reached Vienna .. The capital of Austria . Travelling in Emirates ( showing off again !) had left us with no tiredness at all and hence we immediately ventured on to the happening ' Ringstrasse' and the Opera House .. The highlights of 'Wien' . Next stop was Budapest , Hungary . I would rather call it a city of lovely bridges and amazing architecture. On way from Vienna to Budapest , we passed huge windmills & purple hued fields ! Moving on to one of the most romantic city of Prague,Bohemia,Czech Republic. Through Airbnb , we had a rented apartment for our stay here, which was bang in the centre of the old town square ...the most happening place of Prague with its Astronomical clock! We took a day long Segway tour of the city , which apart from its royal buildings and fascinating history, has a lot to offer. The beautiful river 'Vltava', scenic gardens and not to forget the cool pubs and taverns(That's the most important info for a Rotarian) Our next stop was a cozy little town in Czech called Cesky Krumlov . A place full of typical 'Yash Chopra' locales with breathtaking beauty! Here we had a donut like traditional Czech dessert called 'Tradelnik'. Try pronouncing it, am sure ..most would fail ;) On our way out we visited a Nazi transit camp of ' Terezin' with Jewish ghettos and gestapos .It was from here the Jews were sent to concentration camp with its horrible gas chambers. Terezin makes

-Sharvari Bidaye you hate Hitler some more . We booked a cab and were on our way to the last destination of our trip , Salzburg in Austria. And the best part of this inter country drive ( definitely for me!) was our driver , a cute Czech called Micheal ! Few hours and we arrived in the city of Mozart . Day 1 we took a 'Sound of music' hop on hop off local city tour. The castle, gardens, and the picturesque locations ,where the whole movie was shot, were the major sightseeing attractions .( and perfect ingredients for a great selfie!) day 2 we visited the glittering ' Wattens Swarovski crystal world and Innsbruck .. A quaint little town in Austria . Day 3 was a visit to the salt mines with its adventurous slides and caves. Most unique thing about the salt mines is ,here , miles under the Alps , you cross the border between Austria and Germany ...twice !! After these amazing days , it was time to pack our bags and return to our on Aagpur oops .. Nagpur! On record , in 8 days , we covered 4 countries of the amazing Europe with its Pleasant weather , which makes U forget all your worries.. In my case , forget tuitions & homework :)) Signing off...

Germany, our In – Bound students and Vedant Agrawal and Raghav Meghe, our Re bound students at Rotary Ann. Geeta Rao's Residence. Me – How did you come about the program? Jonas – There was an advertisement in Newspaper & Rotarians came to talk about the program. Dean – Parents had found about it and he was excited to come here. Me – Why did you choose India? Jonas – The cultures of European countries and US are similar to our country. I wanted to experience something completely different. Dean – Yeah, same reason. Me – And did you find it different? Jonas – I attended a wedding in Pune & Goa…The way people dress up and the customs were completely outstanding. It was very colorful and I had also put mehendi. The number of people in all the functions was huge. It felt like a festival. In Germany it's a very official affair. Dean – I am really enjoying my stay with the host family. India has a very exotic feel which is very pleasant. Me – Do you plan to visit India? Jonas - (Laughs..) Yes, definitely for Raghav's wedding. Also I wish to attend some religious festival of India.

Dean – Surely I'm coming back for Vedant's wedding. Me – What new have you learnt here? Jonas – I am learning Yoga and thoroughly enjoying it. I found out that my body is very flexible. (And he was sporting enough to show us the Chakrasana / Wheel pose.) I have also joined robotics class. Me – What did you not like here? Jouns – Mosquitoes…. (Showed us the mosquito bites) Me – And what about the food of India? Dean – Butter Panner (pat came the reply) Jonas – The spices used here are different and interesting… Though I don't remember the names…. But I love to try everything. Me – Had you brought some food from Germany? Dean – No, because I wanted to try everything. ME – Learnt Hindi here? Jonas & Dean –Namaste (with folded hands) Me – How do you think this program has benefitted you? Dean – My stay over here has made me more responsible and mature. Also I am taking back the way joint families in India stay. I have created memories for a lifetime. Jonas – The whole experience has been very satisfying. Earlier I have attended week long exchange programs at France and England. These trips increase my knowledge and widen my perspective. Me – Great!! Best wishes for a bright and successful future. So now I move to the Re bound students Raghav and Vedant.(They had gone to Germany in May'16) Tell me how did you both come to know about the program? Vedant – My elder sister had gone to US

in an exchange program around 5 years ago. And my dad (Rtn. Vishal Agrawal) is a Rotarian. Raghav – My Cousin had visited France. Though I've visited many countries I wished to experience staying with a local family. Me - How are they different from us? Vedant – Their lifestyle is different. They have to do their own work from cleaning to cooking and driving, as domestic help and drivers are not available there. They clean their own schools, wipe the tables etc. And they usually do not stay with their parents after a certain age. Raghav – The places we visited were very clean and it is all taken care by the citizens themselves. Me – And how are they similar to us? Raghav – I felt they are also close to their parents and share the same bond as we share with our siblings. Me – You visited their school. How was the experience… Raghav – They have a different pattern. There are no uniforms. Mobiles are allowed and they are more technologically advanced. There's a 3-D

printer installed for their assignments etc. Vedant – They have to go school till class X by law. Education for them is free. The days timetable includes a lot of 10 - 20 minutes break after every class.

Rotary brings the world to Korea

The world's largest civic outreach group Rotary International held its biggest ever convention in Seoul ( pronounced Sole ), Korea - May 28 - 1 June, 2016. It was an honour to visit the RI Convention at Seoul, as the District Chair RI Convention Promotion. I want to talk about few things that impressed me. This is not a resume or any attempt to give a formal report. I quite simply had a fantastic time and I am delighted to share some of it with you. First of all - attending the annual convention of Rotary is the perfect way to experience Rotary's internationality - a world class opportunity to make new friends from across the globe, exchange ideas with fellow members, discover new avenues and potential partners in service for lasting friendships, hear amazing speakers and visit new places. In fact getting immersed in new cultures ! The convention at Seoul offered so many opportunities. There was something for everyone - whether you just joined Rotary or you're a long time member like myself the Seoul convention offered an outstanding combination of information, inspiration, and fabulous entertainment. It was once-in-a lifetime experience. of activities and events. Under the theme of convention CONNECT WITH KOREA- TOUCH THE WORLD, we could experience everything 'smart' and 'techie' from the

moment we landed at Incheon airport. Rotary volunteers, police, and Korea Tourism Organisation (KTO) staff welcomed us. The throbbing high-tech city of Seoul is both an exotic and happening destination. The Convention kicked off on the

morning of May 28 with a 3-kilometer walk from Seoul Plaza to Gwanghwamun Square, where a crowd of 5,000 walked including more than 1,000 international participants from 80 countries clad in their own traditional dresses. Over four days more than 44,000

Rotarians from 160 countries from Belize to Zimbabwe assembled for Rotary's 107th annual convention, in the KINTEX Centre with its 10 exhibition halls spanning over 108,000 square meters over 26 acres, plus 40 separate meeting rooms. This was Rotary taken to different levels - the largest attendance on record at a convention. Making the gathering even more colourful were the delegates clad in their cultural attire from Indian sarees to the West African Kente. The area around Kintex was transformed into a Kaleidoscope of energy and excitement. The OPENING CEREMONY of the convention was held in the huge decorated hall that could seat 43,000 people at one time. What a great moment it was to see flags of 160 countries lined up under one roof - ONE ROTARY_ ONE WORLD ! RI President 'Ravi; Ravindran entered the stage with a thunderous applause from tens of thousands of Rotarians gathered for the biggest convention in Rotary's history. A pleasant surprise sprung up when the giant screens in front showed a virtual visitor - Paul Harris himself, who was brought to the venue with the help of technology. Ravindran engaged the Founder of Rotary in a conversation by telling him “Look where the little organisation you founded over a century ago, has reached today.“ RI President left his distinct impression on all present in the hall. The two words with which I think

'breakout sessions' - 110 in all. You had to make a choice and the most I could muster were three. I went to one session “ From Stagnant to Sensation - How to Revitalise Your Club”. Yes I'll have some of that ! “ Have Your Meetings Become Stale and Routine ? How to make your meetings Feel Fun and Refreshed”. Who could opt out ? Another interesting breakout session I attended was “ How to Organise a Successful GLOBAL GRANTS Project ?” The colourful convention kept us busy throughout four days. President's Recognition Luncheon,

a Rotary -ticketed event was a delightful event. Almost all members of RI Board and TRF Trustees were present at this gathering. The delicious five-course sit-down luncheon was fantastic with music and entertainment. I met many

stalwarts of Rotary International - Past Presidents Raja Saboo, Frank Devlyn, Ron Burton, TRF Trustee Sushil Gupta,RI General Secretary John Hewko, RI Director Jeniffer Jones and others. Jeniffer is now the Vice President of Rotary International wef July 1. I know Jeniffer since our many meetings at the UN Day in New York. The HOUSE OF FRIENDSHIP in Halls 7-8 of Kintex offered an exciting variety of activities and live entertainment. Troupes of dancing girls were beautiful to watch as was the spectacular display of contemporary ballet. Rotary booths of TRF, RAGS, Rotary Fellowships and Atlanta Convention were well attended, giving detailed information and answers to any question. The Korean culture was amazing and the convention activities so well destined to be an experience like no other. The best of Korean courtesy and efficiency was on display all days of convention. Every single detail was so well planned and organised that the Seoul Convention shall ever be remembered as the best so far attended show of Rotary International. I made many new international friends in the spirit of building goodwill. We happily chatted and strangers became at the very best 'mates' for the rest of the convention. Proof of the pudding was that before leaving the convention I went and signed up for ATLANTA next June. I've attended two conventions and cannot wait to get to another one Atlanta 2017. In my view, every Rotarian should have the taste of the bigger Rotary picture : it is inspiring and uplifting and worth every penny spent. I invite you to join Reeti and me. -Sati Khanna

describe President 'Ravi' are 'dynamic' and 'humble'. Rotary delegates were then treated to a host of eminent speakers and world leaders. The session began with an exhortation from Ban Ki Moon the Secretary General of the United Nations, to continue and complete the work of polio eradication. This was followed by addresses from the Prime Ministers of both Korea and Sri Lanka. All the powerful stuff ! An acknowledgement to the esteem with which Rotary is held in that part of the world. In addition to the high-energy opening session and exchanges, there was a lineup of world class keynote speakers scheduled for the 4 days agenda during this unforgettable convention. Some of them were : President-elect John Germ, RIPN Ian Riseley, Spiritualist from India Mahatria Ra, RI General Secretary John Hewko, President National Geographic Society Gary Knell, 2016 TED Prize Winner Sarah Pareak, World Champion of Public Speaking Dananjaya Hettiarachchi, Author of Book,”Doing Good in the World” Rtn David Forward, President International Justice Mission Gary Haugen, TRF Trustee Chair Ray Klinginsmith, Global Alumni Service to Humanity Award Recipient Susan Davis, International Polio Plus Committee Chair Michael McGovern, Director Centre for Global Health Dr. Rebecca Martin, RI Tresurer Per Hoyan, Family Violence Advocate and Australian of the Year Rosie Batty, UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Myanmar, Yanghee Lee and others. 100 years of The Rotary Foundation At the end of the movie — the cowboy rides away The start of a new Rotary year is always an exciting time. We have a new inspirational theme, new club officers and exciting new projects to work on. In 2016–17, we also have a very special occasion to celebrate: the 100th anniversary of our Rotary Foundation. Since 1917, when Arch Klumph proposed an endowment “for the purpose of doing good in the world,” The Rotary Foundation has grown into a worldclass humanitarian organisation. Few other charitable foundations can claim a 100-year history — all the more impressive when you consider its humble beginning of only $26.50. The fact that our Foundation now has $1 billion in assets is a testament to the remarkable generosity of Rotarians worldwide. I often wonder just what our Foundation will look like when all Rotarians, everywhere, give it their sustained support. I hope each of you will take the time to consider our Foundation's many successes, achievements we can all be proud of. Over the past century, we have provided $3 billion to tackle a wide range of problems, large and small, in thousands of communities worldwide. Our global and district grant projects are saving and transforming lives, and we are educating scholars and training professionals to carry on this vital legacy. Our centennial offers an ideal opportunity to remind our members — and tell the rest of the world — about our Foundation's rich history of humanitarian work. It's time that everyone knew about our leading role in the battle to end polio, a fight that Bill Gates and others agree would never have been possible without Rotary's extraordinary dedication. Let's also spotlight the many ways we're fighting other devastating diseases, providing cleaner and safer drinking water, spreading education by promoting literacy and helping local economies grow.

However you celebrate our Foundation's centennial, I hope you will make that celebration as public as possible. Hold an event that involves your entire community and showcases The Rotary Foundation's good work. You'll find many ideas for centennial celebrations at www.rotary.org/foundation100. RI President John Germ's theme, Rotary Serving Humanity, speaks directly to the work of our Foundation, which for years has enabled Rotarians to embrace humanity and serve those in need. This year, let's commit to sharing those inspirational stories, just as we continue to write more and more of them. Kalyan Banerjee

WHAT’S INvestment Today

22

Usually you expect all types of fancy wishes coming along on your 18th birthday. But, a very bizarre gift reached me on mine. A demat account opening form with a cheque of Rs. 2 lacs with love from my father. Obviously, I thought this is not for real but it was ideal. As a teenager my frills and fancies were far away from the term investment and such complex words formed only a part of my academia nothing more. In order to respect my father's feelings, I tried to do some basic research about investment into equities and invested in various so called “blue chip stocks”. What followed was a journey to complete my education and the investment was forgotten of. This is where it all began… Having come across vocabularies such as investments, expenditure, savings etc. was normal for a commerce guy but to put them into perspective was not. I probably

came across the most unusual though useful equation ever. Income – Savings = Expenditure. Neither had I heard about this in my accounting class nor from my Economics teacher. If I think of it now, it cannot be denied that our wants are converting into needs at a mammoth speed. We sure need a lot of money to satisfy these “needs” of ours. Let's try to understand why is savings so essential for all of us. If we calculate the effect of 1,000 bucks that we saved every month for a decent 10 years and expect return of a safe 15% p.a.; the total money after maturity will be upwards of Rs. 2,80,000. This is the magic of savings and investing them rightly so. A lot of us find it safe to assume that these things matter little in our lives. But if I were to start an investment at 18 and assume that my future generation wanted to go abroad for higher studies would be majorly funded.

-Tushar Badjate The return when I turn 50 years would be Rs. 1.5 crore and that too tax-free. I must reiterate that we are talking about Rs. 1,000 a month being invested. Coming back to my investments that I made in the year 2011, they have multiplied 4x after adjustment of two major economical set backs that the globe has seen.

Unsung Heroes A Jill of all trades - Master in many! She defies the age old adage - I have known Sadhana Paliwal from the time she got married & came to Nagpur in the year 1976. A young bride myself, I was totally in awe of her - rather of all the things that she knew! While I would struggle to get a decent meal together, she would come up with, not only regular food but deserts & savories & pickles. You name it & she knew it! Stitching, Embroidery, Cooking, Knitting, Painting - she knew it all. As time went by, as our kids grew up together, I got to know her better & realized that she knows much more than what she speaks about. Passionate & excited about her hobbies turned into work, she gets so carried away that it is difficult to keep pace with her. Born & raised in Agra, she is proud to be an offspring of an emancipated father. An advocate by Profession ( he still practices at age 94), he allowed all his eight children ( 4 girls & 4 boys), to take up the professions of their choice. Sadhana because of her artistic nature was advised to take up fine arts, but when she opted for Home Science, he right away gave her the green signal. A Bachelors degree was followed by a Masters in Home Management & Child Development. She was half way through her Masters, when Sharad, went to see her elder sister. Cupid struck & he fell for Sadhana. It was the younger sister, he wanted! Her parents agreed as they had another good proposal for their elder daughter. Settling down, in an orthodox joint family was not easy. She managed to complete her masters. But that was it! She got pregnant. Then it was just cooking & cleaning & keeping house. With a pallav on her head, this sari clad lass, did the best she could. With a strict disciplinarian for a mother in law, she had to follow a whole lot of rules & regulations, which in hind sight, Sadhana feels brought about a lot of discipline in her own life. She wanted to do so much but ....

Manju Shahani Her son, Saurabh was born in 1978 followed by Swati in 1979 & Sadhana, who had been making bed covers, table mats, etc etc in the time when most of us would relax, had her first exhibition in 1981. No Sale! Was a condition she had to adhere to. Gradually her family relented as they realized that her talent could'nt be restrained. Since then there has been no looking back! She works with various medias keeping the originality of Indian traditional styles. She has developed painting using Coffee decoctions and is only person doing it on marble slates as well. A painting of hers' has earned a National Level Recognition as it was awarded in Traditional & Folk art Category by SCZCC in the year 2007. One of her paintings was also voted as the best painting in an International competition held by Neelami House Jaipur, in 2013. She has held 10 exhibitions so far. Her Silk paintings adorn the walls of the Presidential Palace & the International Silk Museum in South Korea. Since 1991 she had trained around 1450 students. She has been active in our club since 2011 (since PP Arun Bhargava inducted Sharad) and has conducted a number of vocational training workshops for the benefit of Mentally & Physically Abled, Orphans & Tribal students to help them earn a livelihood. She has been instrumental in conducting around 10 workshops training more than 300 students and about 15 teachers of various institutions every year. Apart from these workshops she has trained about 250 students every year for three years at Lok biradri Prakalp Hemalkasa. She also

trained the inmates and staff at the prakalp in sewing machines repair. An exclusive training in Tie & Die was also held for them at Hemalkasa and an advanced course at her studio at Nagpur. She has trained teachers of various institutions like Matru Seva Sangh Nandanvan, Home for Disabled Untkhana, Shradhanand Anathalaya, Nirmay Bahuudeshiya Sanstha, Sewanand Vidhyalaya, various Corporation Schools, etc. Apart from these individual ladies have been trained by her to be independent and are pursuing painting, sewing, soft toy making , batik, tie & dye , mala & rakhi making. She has tought to create various products from newspaper & other waste. The computor is her favourite toy! She spends hours browsing & her sharp mind picks ideas like a magnet. Her Goal in life- to help as many downtrodden to be independent as possible. A boon indeed for Rotary! May your tribe rise Sadhana

conducive. With the beginning of this new session the rotaractors started with our very first project on the 2nd of July '16. Rotaractors & Rotarians visited the Indira Convent, a school adopted by the Rotaract club of Hislop College to start the session at a good note and for the benefit of our student friends there. The rotaractors of Hislop College made an initiative by putting up educational charts for students of KG-I to

He joined Rotary seven years back, as the case with all new members he too took some time to find his footing, but his amiable, adjusting, ever learning and helping nature made him instant friends in Rotary. Friends he feel are now for life. He is omnipresent and always on his feet to help. I can vouch for this trait as I too had an opportunity to work with him. In his short tenure at Rotary he has worked for prestigious projects like AIM, RYLA, walkathon, Rotaract, interact, B l o o d d o n a t i o n s , G r e e n C i t y, Fellowships and has also organized a monsoon fellowship. This year our Director's focus is on, coming up with new projects that will have a lasting impact on youth. With a baby in hand, Ruchi is playing her duties with grace; be it super mommy, doting daughter in law or a supporting and loving wife. Rahul's parents were initially skeptical about him joining Rotary, but soon turned to delight on seeing him enjoying himself in it. There is no greater joy for parents to see their child succeed, and that is what you see in their eyes on calling their son Rahul Choudhry- the Director of Youth. It shows the strong bond with his family especially with his father who is more of a friend to him. All said and done Rahul is apt for the post as he connects with today's youth effortlessly. It was delight to meet this family. They played a perfect host! Thank you guys for taking out time at such a short notice.

Nishant and Nivedita Pethe Sometimes it's enough for a person to just have the will to do something for society, that itself is a thrust to embark upon our journey through Rotary! This is where this new Rotarian is right now, a little unsure as what he wants to do, but sure that he is ready to take on the responsibilities. Nishant Pethe joined rotary only a few months ago for the simple reason that he likes what the people of rotary stand for and the professionalism that comes with it, A civil engineer from the 1988 batch he is a practicing architect right now. His schooling and formative years were in Chhindwara, MP. Nivedita Pethe his wife is a Science graduate who is doing her D.Ed. right now. Naturally she wants to teach once she finishes. They have two children Ayushi who is 9 and Mayank 4. He likes driving on long road trips, music and reading also although he doesn't have much time for this hobby! Right now Rotary meeting timings don't suit him since his work place is about half an hour from Chitnavis center, but he is working on that and has ensure that now once in rotary he will give his best . Looking forward to your participation Nishant.

Alok and Ashwini Umredkar A fresh entrant into the Rotary family, Dr. Alok Umredkar, was inducted in May 2016. By gentle persuasion from his friends he more than willingly said "yes". With medical social service in mind, he feels Rotary would be the right step in that direction. Alok is a neuro surgeon, and a very young one at that! He is attached to Sure Tech Hospital. Although his working hours stand at 10 to 7, which might seem ideal, his faculty demands him to be on call 24x7. Ashwini, Alok's wife is a Radiologist working at Govt. Medical College. Alok did his undergraduate from GMC Nagpur and went on to do his MS and MCH from PGI Chandigarh. The couple stayed on for a few

Romance for medico couples many a times blooms in college but this couple was an exception. Ashwini is only two years junior to him and how he missed to spot this pretty girl is a mystery? But destiny took over where Alok missed!!! They have two daughters Anushka 6 and Adira not far behind at 5. Alok and Ashwini are a young couple, focused on what they want and working hard to achieve it. We look forward to seeing them in Rotary!

The Rotary Tales

Ritika Singhvi Archana Javery

Hello friends, It is the beginning of new Rotary Year and in this column we shall be indulging in light Gup-Shup. Here we share, indulge and update ourselves with the latest happenings of the members in Rotary Club of Nagpur. 1. A rare surgery was done to reposit the vaginal cuff back inside called Abdominal Sacrocolepopexy with mash by Rt. Ann Dr. Rajasi Sengupta. It is very difficult procedure and infact in Nagpur, very few surgeons attempt to do it, due to its difficulty and risks involved. WELL DONE RAJASI !!! 2. Rtn Dr Shivani Bidaye performed a rare surgery which is called “Tarso Fronatal Sing Surgery with silicon rods.” A tale of silicon: Today's silicon world has its advantage too! A young man with droopy eyelids since birth…with the help of silicon roads had his eyelids lifted up. Not just giving him good cosmetics but also perfect vision! CONGRATULATIONS !! 3. Yatharth Javery son of Rtn Rajeev and Archana Javery is selected for prestigious VCA under 14 years' emerging camp. His aim is to get into under 14 VCA team. ALL THE BEST YATHARTH!!! 4. Kelvin son of Rtn Beena and Shibu Methew recently completed his graduation in DMM with distinction. He recently modelled for an AD about a travelling App. CONGRATULATIONS KELVIN !! 5. Savita Sancheti wife of Rtn Ajay Sancheti is renominated as a chairperson of Mahavir International a famous NGO for the second consecutive term!! CONGRATULATIONS !! 6. A house designed by Rt. Ann Amita Behal in Raipur featured in July edition of Inside Outside. CONGRATULATIONS Amita!!! 7. Great news for Rotary India on TRF front! In Rotary Year 15-16, India is declared 2nd highest contributor to The Rotary Foundation, leaving Japan and South Korea behind. USA tops the list. Our RID 3030 also scaled 'never before' heights in 15-16, crossing USD 1. Million , and is placed at 2nd position in our Zone 4. We are at number 4 in the 45 Rotary Districts in Indian sub continent. The 3 Rotary Districts contributing more than our 3030 are Mumbai 3140, Delhi 3011 and Chennai 3230.

RI President’s Message worry that taking a long lunch once a week would hurt my advancement, or what my boss would think about the occasional Rotary phone call at work. Today, things are different. Companies are less generous about time, and not every manager looks favorably on community service. It's hard to enjoy a Rotary meeting when you've got emails piling up on your phone. It's harder than ever to balance work with Rotary – and the model that gave us so much growth a few decades ago is part of what's holding back our growth now. That's why the recent Council on Legislation adopted some innovative measures that allow clubs to vary their meeting times and expand their pool of prospective members. Clubs have more flexibility now to respond to the needs of their members and to clear away as many barriers to membership as they can. But there's one barrier to membership that only you can remove, one thing that every prospective member needs to become a Rotarian: an invitation to join a Rotary

club. Whenever I tell a group of Rotarians that we need more willing hands, more caring hearts, and more bright minds to move our work forward, everyone applauds. But those hands, hearts, and minds won't magically appear in our clubs. We have to ask them to join. And an invitation to Rotary is something that only you can give. An invitation is a gift. It's saying to someone, “I think you have the skills, the talent, and the character to make our community better, and I want you to join me in doing that.” I'm the president of Rotary International, but the only club I can invite someone to join is the Rotary Club of Chattanooga, Tenn. I can't make your club or your community stronger. Only you can do that – by inviting the qualified people you know to join you in Rotary Serving Humanity. John F. AUGUST 2016 GOLDEN ORANGE

Forty years ago, a m a n named George Campb ell, the owner of the compa n y I worked f o r , invited me to join Rotary. Back then, that was a common practice in the United States. Your boss invited you to join Rotary because he thought it would be good for business and good for the community, and you said yes. It's not surprising that our membership surged during that period. George warned me not to use Rotary as an excuse to slack off at work. Even so, I always had time to attend lunch meetings and serve on committees. I never had to
