President’s Message The month of January 2016 saw a steep incline in our activities. Back to back projects, involving a high level of participation, planning and implementation from the beginning to the end, has virtually catapulted our Rotarians into super efficient, serviceminded managers. From Hemalkasa Surgical Camp at the beginning of the month to RYLA to Walkathon at the fag- end; all heavy on expenditure, efforts and energy were successfully completed with the help of our generous sponsors and ever-willing Rotarians. As President of the Club, I am overwhelmed and feel highly indebted to all those who helped, in small or large measure, to make each project
memorable. Memorable, in different ways. Some touching the heart and some perking up the mind. But all such that one wants to keep them etched on the mind forever. From soothing frayed nerves to settling the waves of turmoil to celebrating when we pulled through the odds and emerged smiling; are all lessons in human relations. At the end of it all, it is the effectiveness of the work that matters. Let's make it our mantra to maintain the momentum we have gained and continue to deliver to the community. Let's not rest on our laurels but set new benchmarks. Let's make our membership to this organization the means to an end which is service for the larger good. Let's strive to keep up the good name of OUR CLUB .
Let's keep working for now is not the time to rest. We are doers and let's continue to be so! Let's Be a Gift to the World! Khushnoor S. Chugh
To Ponder... Do not wait until tomorrow, FOR IT MAY BE JUST A LITTLE TOO LATE. Love is like the question mark after a sentence- it always asks for more; the heart is like an exclamation mark- it is always confused, anxious, surprised and eager to love; the mind is like the full stop- cuts short so many wonderful things and puts limitations and restrictions on love. So my dear friends, this Valentine's, give an ear to your heart over your mind; Let your heart rule. Let yourself be your true self. For remember, love is unconditional and it is given to everyone freely including yourself and one can only give from the vessels that are full and over brimming. And the most important rule to follow- “Real love begins where nothing is expected in return.” So live, love and enjoy every moment of life, for 'that very

FEBRUARY 2016 GOLDEN ORANGE
Comes the month of February and love is in the air. Young or old, lads or lasses, flintstones or magnanimous, all feel the soft touch and the sensuous tickle of the Valentine's fever some way or the other!!! Soon enough my avid mind sits to ponder and analyse the true definition of LOVE.. and ahh.. there is an abundance of those. The one that appeals most to me is “To love someone is not just a strong feeling. It is a decision, a judgement and a promise. It's true altruism. “ I remember this beautiful verse from a very ancient HYMN:IF THERE ARE KIND WORDS TO SAY, SAY IT NOW If there is something to give, give it now. If there is hope you can raise, or someone you can praise, Do it now, do it now, do it now. Now, before it is too late, now is the time for every good deed

-(Non Medical) A Surgical Camp, a Flagship Project, Rotary's Annual Picnic, call it what you may, ultimately it is a Pilgrimage - an experience of a lifetime, for those who visit it, not only for the first time but time and again, year after year. From a jeep full of Doctors and non medicos to 100 plus in 2 buses, 2 matadors and some 7-8 cars, from a tin shed, to more than a 100 bedded hospital, from mud roads that took more than 16 hours, to a barely 8 hrs on a good tar road all through, it has evolved. And how? We, from the Rotary Club of Nagpur, await this project all year through. Year after year our chairpersons both Medical and Non Medical spend months on working out the logistics. Every year we manage to do something new; adding some new feature to this-all time beautiful experience. This year also we had 30 plus Rotarians with 9 or 10 first timers. Rotaractors from IGGMC and Tuli College of Hotel Management. Director Non Medical, Namita Sharma and her team of energetic and enthusiastic young Rotarians. A RYLA and Bal-Mela was organized for the 700 children of the school.10 games including a huge jumper were made available to the kids. Paav Bhaji, Pulao, Paani Poori and Cream rolls were for them to eat. The glee and smiles on the faces of the kids, their teachers, their parents, had to be seen to be believed. Prizes, gifts, certificates of merit, you name it and it was there. Sweaters were distributed as well. All this, thanks to President Khushnoor who encouraged the chairpersons and gave them a free hand to work to their hearts content. But none of this would have been possible without Mahindra and Mahindra who have been sponsoring the surgical Camp for the last 9 years. This year, their

Rotary brings people and cultures together! When Sanaya Bapuna, daughter of Abad and Viloo, went to Minnesota USA as an IYE student, little did she know that her visit would lead to a sister club partnership between that club and ours.
Regular correspondence with her host parents brought about a visit of a team of 9 Americans visiting Nagpur on the 16th and 17th of january Their interest in India, converted into a family exchange program. 5 hosts from our club and 1 each from Ishanya and Mihaan town welcomed the Americans in our usual Indian, hospitable way. Amidst other things a Take Rotary Home was arranged at President Khushnoor and Sanjiv's house. Rtn Vilas Kale, Dist chair for family exchange had made a beautiful power point on India. We also showcased our Hemalkasa and Smiling faces projects. Over a pot luck dinner, the guests as well as Rotarians from other clubs enjoyed the get together. But this TRH continued to a traditional lunch, hosted by Rtn Vilas and Neeta the next afternoon at their 300 yr old ancestral vada. The Americans were simply awestruck and said they had never seen anything so beautiful. A city tour, visit to the Orange City Mela and that to

The Dream Run which is a new addition to the Club's annual event this year has raised the bar of The Nagpur Walkathon by many notches. The 9 Km walk started first at 6.55 AM sharp and Commissioner of Police, Shri SP Yadav kindly consented to flag off this walk and put this mammoth event into motion. The 6 Kms walk was flagged off by Mr Suresh Batini, Commissioner Income Tax and Mr Anil Kumar Arora, executive VP and Regional Branch Banking head , Axis Bank, Western region. 31st Jan. Vidarbha!! In all we had about 65 participants registered from outside Nagpur for the dream run!! Organised annually since 2005 to promote good health and well-being, this event is eagerly looked forward to by Nagpurians. The theme “Walk for Life is self-explanatory. Walking is the simplest, cheapest, and most effective way of keeping good health and delaying ageing and age related diseases. The Arneja Heart and multi-speciality hospital is the chief sponsor and co-promotes the event in the interest of Public Health and awareness. The Walkathon was in 3 categories: 9 km, 6 km and 3 km. The 3 km walk started from C.P.Club Jogger's Park to Ladies Club to GPO to High Court and back past the Japanese Garden. Each circuit is 3 Kms, so the 6 and 9 Km walkers did 2 and 3 laps respectively. Each Walk was flagged off at intervals of about 15- 20 minutes. The 9 km Walk commenced at 6.55am, followed by 6 km and 3 km. The Mini Marathon was flagged off at 7.20 am but took a different route. This year there is a technological leap in the timing and judging!! Each participant was tagged with a micro-chip to facilitate tracking. These RFID tags were fitted on every bib with a unique identification number for each participant. These were electronically read by readers set up at various points on the route. As soon as a walker/runner finished, he/she got an sms informing the participant of the time
taken to finish the walk/run. This time technology helped decide the winner!! Three attractive prizes in each Category of Men, Women, Children and Veterans in each Walk, awaited the winners of the Walkathon. In addition to fantastic cash prizes, winners in all categories will get a free health check-up at Arneja MultiSpeciality Hospital valid for one year from the date of the event. Also each participant will get a 50 percent discount which will also be applicable for three members of the family above 40 years for one year from the date of the event. This facility will be made available on producing a Certificate of participation which will be e-mailed to each runner. Over a hundred Marshals on cycles and motor-bikes patrolled the track to ensure safety, discipline and stop traffic at crossings. Water bottles were provided at intervals along the way. Three ambulances wiere moving to attend to any emergency that may arise. This mega event was powered by Ambrosia Farm Villas and co-sponsored by Axis Bank, Godrej Properties and Cocoa Cola. Hospitality Partners were Magnum Insurance and Broking Pvt. Ltd. The event was supported by Dinshaw's, Orange City Runners, Pro-HEALTH Foundation, Mayur Marbles, Devaki I n v e s t m e n t s , C . P. Each of us has the right to voice our opinions… and when the youngsters, our future… do it….it's all the more better. From strong to subtle this month is a mix of emotions. Happy Reading!! Keep mailing your kids experiences and talents to sonalsinghvi3@gmail.com Was 2015 the Feminists' year? Feminism! One word, several false interpretations. From man-haters to women supporters to a biased ideology, the term has been and I quote an extremely famous celebrity “Bastardised to the point that the average girl does not want to be associated with it”. In a place where people are unclear about the term and its meaning, this statement stands out and how! Even with the kind of bad-mouthing the term witnessed, articles and videos in recent times have highlighted that the country may just be moving towards accepting the formula of feminism in a positive light. From Vogue's “My Choice” video that was released in 2015 to Kalki Koechlin's recent poetic satire, advertisements and women centric campaigns, media seems to be going through a phase of focusing on the strong character of women. Bollywood is not far behind either. Movies like Mary Kom, NH10, Piku, Queen, Revolver Rani and Bajirao Mastaani don't limit the female actor's character to a housewife or another mainstream “woman profession”. While some may argue with contradictory figures on girl child murders, recent rapes or dowry mishaps, the ideology of a woman is gradually changing from just a
cooking, cleaning 'home maker' to a strong working professional…..and seems like the media is finally heading in the right direction with the ideology as well. -Ruxshin Watchmaker He loves my kisses He loves my kisses. Especially the ones I give him early morning, despite my morning breath, he'll wake up and laugh. I hate it when he brushes, like why brush? Yet again he's given me warm milk, despite me making it very obvious that I don't like warm milk. I decide to throw a tantrum later today about how little he cares about the temperature of my milk. I love throwing tantrums because they always end in hugs and kisses and a greater love than before. You know what I hate about the start of the day? That he leaves. He disappears after breakfast and I don't see him again till he comes back when it's dark. I've started to suspect that there are others like me out there, and he's with them during the day. But I push that thought away, trust is the base of every relationship. And our relationship is everything to me. Is it a weird obsession? Maybe. I can't imagine a day without him. He's the centre of my life, wait, he is my life. When he not around, I'm thinking of him. Where he is, what he's doing, who he's with, has he eaten or not. Can you blame me? I sit around at home all day, he always cooks for me, takes care of me, takes me to the doctor, we even shower together sometimes ;). You care this way only for the ones you love right? Call me crazy but I think he loves me the most in this whole wide world. Yes, there are days he'll come back and ignore me. I try and smell him for clues of other bitches, Search his clothes for hair I can use against him. When I try and seek his attention, “not now” he'll say with an annoyed face and push me away. I mean what the hell? I wait for him the entire day and get this? Oh the waiting is the worst part. I don't have much to do so I just sit and wait for his return. Waiting is the worst. Every car that passes the house could be him. Every noise might be of his arrival. I wait for him. His absence makes me so hollow, so alone. I hear him talking to his friend on the
Sonal Singhvi phone, he's talking about his mean boss who called him lazy. How can anyone find faults in this man? I mean, I know he's far from perfect but so am I. We all have faults and aren't faults meant to be overlooked? He's the best person that's ever walked on this earth and he must know it! I tell him this all the time in so many different ways – slurpy kisses, when I ask him to give me bites of his meal, when beg him not to leave in the morning and when I guard him with my life. Some mornings, when he leaves I feel like he won't ever come back. I find myself staring out of the window like one of those sad women waiting for a mystical prince charming. Today is one of those days. He isn't coming back. I have to face it. He's gone for good. What will I do? Who'll get me breakfast? Who will I cuddle when I'm sleeping? What will become of me without him? Oh my god I'm panicking now. He doesn't love me. I'm sure of it, otherwise he'd be back by now, it's dark already. This is all my fault. I hear his car roll into the driveway, he's back! I run out and jump at him for a hug, he laughs and holds me. His laugh is what really makes all of this worth it. He loves me after all. He goes into the house and I follow, with my tail wagging behind me. -Shyla Bhagwagar

Fitness Failed

They say fit is the new beautiful. So, like thousands of other resolution-makers I too decided to join the gym and get onto the fitness bandwagon. Little knowing that a month later I would be back to Square One, and not because of lack of motivation or drive. Every morning, it became impossible to go to the overcrowded gym and face these situations.... TOO COOL FOR SCHOOL : The guy who wants to show off his expertise by walking his friends around the gym loudly describing why the other people are morons for working out the way they do. YUM ... I'LL HAVE THAT : The locker-neighbour who either stores a dead animal in his locker, or really should consider getting new shoes. The dude with a cold, who sneezes loudly and wetly in his hand, and then grabs the barbell. Doctor Alert faces at this stage. To name a few- hot flushes, cold sweats, night sweats etc. Hot flush is a subjective sensation that occurs as an abrupt onset of warmth that usually begins in upper chest and neck and spreads to the face associated with redness and sweating that lasts for a few seconds or minutes. It reaches its highest during the first and second year of menopause and then declines overtime. Associated symptoms may be sweating, flushing, palpitation, anxiety, irritability and even panic. Some may feel formication or even faint and dizzy. The cause is not clear but it is likely due to the changes in the hormones and their effect on the body. (diagnosis is made with certain lab tests along with symptoms and signs). There are other somatic symptoms like backpain, severe tiredness, stiff or painful joints, body pain and worse general health. Management- flushes following surgical
menopause that is surgical removal of the ovaries causes a sudden dramatic transition and have a higher incidence of hot flushes. 1) Non pharmacological options include a) regular physical exercise and b) relaxation methods like yoga comprising breathing techniques, postures and relaxation poses. Significant improvement is seen with these. 2) pharmacological options include a) hormonal therapy, anti depressants etc. b) complementary or alternative therapy like phytoestrogens and black cohosh, vitamins evening primrose oil, ginseng etc. So with this little information ladies, I wish you all a happy transition phase in life.

With a plethora of symptoms that irritate a perimenopausal woman, I am sure that the one i am going to discuss today takes the cake. There is no doubt that a perimenopausal woman is standing at a juncture where you see a transition in life with declining estrogen levels. So she moves from a reproductive phase to a non-reproductive phase - so to say- I would call it a more productive phase with all the experiences she has in store with her. Opening the Pandora's box for her, starts the beginning phase of her life which deals with not just perimenopausal bleeding due to multiple reasons, to urogenital symptoms, to sexual problems, to non-communicative diseases like the cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, diabetes, dementia, sleep disorder etc. But as i reiterate again, as she deals with all bigger problems, nothing beats the vasomotor somatic symptoms that a lady

2015- The year that was THE GOOD The USA Supreme Court rules same-sex marriage legal and a right guaranteed under the Constitution. The Paris Climate Accord where 195 countries agreed to cut down on emissions to save the global climate. SpaceX lands a rocket vertically successfully to demonstrate feasibility of reuse of rockets in the future, reducing costs drastically, besides being a greener alternative. Flowing liquid water was discovered on our friendly neighborhood planet- Mars, leading to possibilities of life surviving on Mars- in the past and in the future.
Saina Nehwal made India proud by becoming the first Indian woman badminton player ever to gain the Number 1 ranking in the world. Sania Mirza became the first Indian woman to achieve the Number 1 ranking in doubles, with Martina Hingis by her side. India (military forces) successfully managed to evacuate her citizens from Yemen amounting to around 5000, in one of the world's largest scale successful operation. THE BAD Terrorist attack in the city of love and romance- Paris killed hundreds and injured many more. The worst migration crisis since the 2nd World War caused (and continues to) lakhs of refugees, especially from Syria. The French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo was the target for a terrorist attack for trying to
make light of religious symbols. Former president Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam passed away while delivering a lecture. Heavy rainfall and floods claimed atleast 400 lives and displaced and disrupted thousands more. THE UGLY Andreas Lubitz- a pilot, committed suicide killing 150 people on board a GermanWings flight in the Alps Mountains. Around 700 pilgrims lost their lives during the Hajj stampede in Mina near Mecca, Saudi Arabia.
INtelligent INvestment There is this game that cowboys play in the wild-wild west of the U S of A, its called the Rodeo. It essentially means “Riding the Bull. In American tradition, the rider must stay atop the bucking bull for 8 full seconds to count as a qualified ride. The ride generally ends after the bull has thrown off the rider, or the rider has dismounted after completing his quota of 8 seconds Its not an easy sport, and considered pretty dangerous. The only support the rider has is a flat braided rope that controls the bull. He can hold this rope with one hand and must keep the other hand free, not touching anything. Most of us aren't cowboys, and the Rodeo seems nice when watched from a safe distance. But a lot of us do try to tame the raging bull, that is our Sensex and score points in the form of higher returns on our
investments. There is a twist in the tale though, or should I say braid? The sensex has a split personality. It is a bull at times, and a bear at others. And the most difficult part is to figure out which part is it playing‌ I think the trick is to not try to figure out. The best way to make good returns on your investments vis a vis the stock markets is to let the sensex tire itself out. You just need to ensure that you have the stamina,(patience) to stay the course. Sounds very easy, but when someone gets mauled by a bull in the arena, it puts the fear of God in everyone who is watching. And a 10 % correction in as many days is definitely scary. Oil prices are falling like a rock, Steel has taken a beating and so have a lot of other metals. So is it not good for someone out there that he is able to buy things much cheaper
than ever before? Businesses are down because everyone is scared, scared to be brave and optimistic. And then there are so many financial pundits across the world predicting doom. Even the Davos 2016 summit only talked of grim challenges to the world economy. I am sure they have their reasons, and very valid ones too. When people stop thinking that things can get better, that is probably the turning point , the bottom, the end of pessimism and gloom, because we as humans are programmed to continuously strive to make things better. The squirrel always has a smile on its face, in fact you can even see its teeth, because it truly believes that things always get better over time.

Ashok Mrig is a busy man, and, for all the right reasons. He was exceedingly occupied in the Rotary Project Walkathon when I contacted him for this interview and he was kind enough to spare me some time. Everyone gets 24 hours in a day but what one does in those 24 hours, makes him or her. Ashok utilizes all these hours very productively and the result is before our eyes – can be summoned up in one word – SUCCESS. He is an IITian, and his superlative intellect is one of his most striking personality characteristics. He is also a very humble but frank person. Very hardworking and methodical is how one can judge him almost immediately. His father was a Government Officer with a transferable job and hence Ashok has travelled all over India in his childhood. He came to Nagpur in 1994 after his marriage to Madhu. He started his companies the same year and today is a very successful business man. Ashok loves to travel, reading is his hobby and he is also a foodie. Ashok describes himself as a quiet, bit of an introvert person. He told that he was too much of an introvert
24
before marriage but Madhu has brought about some positive changes in him. He says, she is their family anchor. She is the one who holds all of them together and is also his link to the extended family. They are blessed with two daughters, Shreya and Vernikaa. Shreya is studying Chemistry with management at University College, London and Vernikaa is in Class 8. Vernikaa is an excellent student and also has a keen interest in art, painting etc. Ashok was inducted in Rotary in 2005. What drew him to Rotary were the various services Rotary undertakes for the Society. He found this the right platform to make his contribution towards our society. He strongly believes in Rotary Motto, 'SERVICE BEFORE SELF'. He is Director –Finance this year and is leaving no stone unturned in shaping his projects in the desired way. All the best, Ashok Mrig, for all your future endeavors.
New Members Manju Shahani Childhood friendship, brought her into Rotary. From Kindergarten through college, they were in the same class. Destiny found their hubbies ( also childhood friends) in Nagpur. They have been neighbors since. So when Gaurav and Neha Khemuka joined Rotary, they wanted Manoj and Bhavika to join to. But business commitments did not permit Manoj, hence Bhavika decided to join. She very passionately feels for the plight of needy children and expects Rotary to give her a chance to serve the society. Fond of gift wrapping, she has made a career out of her hobby and professionally does trousseau packing. She can convert a plain paper into a pretty wrapper in no time. The creativity in her also guides her, when she shops for accessories for their 2 stores Bombaywala Departmental Store and W& G, which the couple together runs along with Manoj's brother and dad. Manoj supports all her artistic whims but his own de stressing comes by flying kites! Their 9 yr old son Nikhil is now old enough for Bhavika to indulge herself. Her ideal holiday is when she can just relax with a romantic paperback. Welcome Bhavika and Manoj!

The common perception of the physically disabled throughout Mexico was that they are incapable of being productive members of society. Unable to work or provide for their families, they face discrimination, must be taken care of, and are kept at home. But an organization called Autonomy, Liberation Through Movement (ALEM) is working to change all that. Founded in 2007, ALEM provides vocational training, encouraging and empowering people with motor disabilities to find meaningful employment. In addition, the group is providing a service that was sorely needed throughout central Mexico: wheelchair
repair. With the help of the Rotary Club of Cuernavaca-Juárez and the Rotary Club of Paoli-Malvern-Berwyn, Pennsylvania, USA, ALEM has been able to provide low-cost repairs for wheelchair users in their community. A Rotary Foundation grant is funding a mobile repair clinic that travels to neighboring central Mexican cities including Puebla and Veracruz. Local Rotary clubs arrange accommodations, meals, publicity, and a central location where the ALEM team can set up its mobile repair shop. ALEM has 10 people working out of its Cuernavaca-based workshop, all with physical disabilities and most of them wheelchair users. All workers are trained in various specialties, including painting, welding, and upholstery work. Providing low-cost wheelchair repairs is another important element of ALEM's mission. Although replacement parts are relatively inexpensive, they still aren't affordable for most wheelchair users in the community. With Rotary's help, ALEM now charges only for labor, anywhere from about $3 to $18. With the ability now to bring the repair clinic to other communities, ALEM's impact is that much wider. “We [and the Rotary clubs] joined our efforts and started working together, but it goes much further than that,” Myra Solano, Director of AELM says. “It goes in the feeling and the spirit of Rotary, which is about working with the community, for the community. It's the partnership that makes change possible.” By Daniela Garcia

Organ Donation & Transplantation life) and accepted condition all over the world. Many people may confuse it with 'Coma', a condition with partial loss of brain function. Significantly Brain death can only be diagnosed in Hospitals, where the patient is admitted in Intensive Critical Care Unit (ICCU). Obviously the patient was admitted when he/she was showing signs of living. The most common cause of Brain death in our country is head injury due to road accidents, bleeding in the skull, space occupying growths, etc. All such conditions lead to increase in intra-cranial pressure, which hampers the blood supply and through it oxygen to the most vital organ in our body the Brain. Such patients are put on life support system commonly called Ventilator, which functions to keep the organs (heart, kidneys, liver, etc) of the body functional. Simultaneously the doctors will attend to the damage of the brain. If the Brain and more specifically the lower part called 'brain stem' (which
controls the regulations of heart beats, breathing, etc) shows no signs of activity the person will never be revived. However, such patients appear to be alive because of the Ventilator support. Their organs would be healthy till the Ventilator switched off. It is this reason for the family to support and consent to donate the organs, to the needy. -Sqn Ldr (Dr) Rtn. Ravi Wankhede Chairman Organ Donation Awareness Committee Rotary District 3030 & RC, Nagpur.
FEBRUARY 2016 GOLDEN ORANGE
Part II Hi! You must be reading in news papers spurt in organ donation across the country and transporting them through 'green corridors' by road and even by airplanes. That's definitely good news. According to MOHAN Foundation we did 50% more donations than in 2014. Tamil Nadu continues to lead the country. Rajasthan ushered less than a year ago, has conducted significant numbers of organ donation. In Maharashtra, Mumbai and Pune the number of organ donation has doubled. The rest like our own Nagpur is sadly stagnant. There is no doubt that awareness has increased a lot, but donations are just eight (last was on 25th March 2015) in three years. This goes to prove, that the matter is not yet understood. And here I am talking about organ donation from 'brain dead'. That's the reason I will like to dwell upon 'Brain death'. Brain death is a complete and irreversible loss of brain functions (including involuntary activity necessary to sustain
