Dear Rotary Families, As I sit down to pen this last message, I hear people asking me “vacuum ?” “withdrawal symptoms??” They say that is what happens when one relinquishes the chair Well, I can assure you nothing of that sort is going to happen to me I have been fortunate to have affectionate Rotary families around me and blessed to have and looking forward to catching up with my family, extended family, very dear friends, long standing associates and my very supportive office colleagues – I am what I am because of them.

For me life is a journey where I keep learning and adapting each day… and will do so till I live. The journey of this year was made fantastic by each one of you. Some of you made it special - PDG Vishwas - for never

letting me loose my focus, PP Shabbir – my man for all seasons, PP Ganesh Joshi – for all his guidance.

The desire to serve, to help, is there I guess in everyone's mind. Yet, one is not sure of where and how to begin. Rotary International and Rotary Club of Nagpur gave me that platform by accepting me as a member and then guided me in a seamless way so beautifully, that I never realised when service became part and parcel of my daily life and importantly in an atmosphere of Fellowship and Friendship. I believe that is true to each one of you.

On this bright sunny Sunday morning, the last day of my Presidency, the feeling is overwhelming, yet humbling .The twinkle in eyes of the beneficiaries of our services, shall keep inspiring Shefali and me to do more. Your

love and affection that you have bestowed, shall always remain a source of strength for us.

I sign off by saying, what I began my tenure with – “Chalo, hum us Ishwar ki seva karein, jise agyani log Manushya kehte hain” !

Hear Me Out....

For the last time………

For me, a 24 month inning comes to an end! There is an element of relief that no more deadlines have to be met. I am happy……….. rather euphoric that follow up for articles, choosing of photographs, setting of pages and other smaller tasks associated with the GO will be a thing of the past.

I have tried my best to dish out something which was interesting, attractive and readable, also doing justice to all activities of the Club. There was an attempt to have something for everyone…the diehard Rotarians, the ladies and the children. The endeavour was to cover all activities of the Club and at the same time have articles of general interest and Rotary matters related to the national and international scene. There was a genuine attempt to give coverage to all members of the Club.

How much of this was achieved is something which is for you to decide. All that I can say in my defense is that “I tried my best” and wish to be remembered for the better aspects.

My compliments to the team 2012-13 for a wonderful year and for seamless working with the GO team. My heartfelt gratitude to all the contributors of articles, project reports and sponsors. A big thank you to those who took the effort to read. A bigger thank you to those who encouraged me from time to time.

My best wishes to team 2013-14 and incoming editor Parag Paranjpe. We all know that he will do the Club and the GO proud!!!!

BOBBY'S BUBBLES Before the Mount Everest was conquered by Sir Edmund Hilary and Tenzing Norgay in 1959, we used hear often about the abominable snowman of the higher ranges of the Himalayas. This 'creature' was abominable to the people of the plains but to the people of the hills and mountains the 'snowman' was just Yeti. No one appears to have really seen the abominable snowman but rumors persisted about his existence. The Nepalese and the Tibetans would speak of the snowman or Yeti like speaking of yak, or cows, goats or monkeys! They firmly believed in the existence Yeti. For them Yeti was not abominable. A Yeti was just another creature of the mountains. He was their brother, just like other animals were brothers of nature.

Yeti was respected by the mountain people as he belonged to the mountains and never left the hilly terrain. Therefore he was 'son of the soil' and its protector. The mountain people spoke of Yeti with respect and reverence.

People from the plains and outsiders, who came to explore and conquer, hearing of the description of the snowman termed the poor Yeti as awful and abominable

YETI – THE ABOMINABLE SNOWMAN snowman! Yet no one has photographed or has any evidence of a real, existing abominable snowman.

There is another abominable character – the government! You can't see the government but feel its impact when you pay your tax or when prices of taxed commodities go up. You also feel the impact for government's inaction or when it does not perform its duty for which citizens pay tax. The glaring example is of maintenance or really speaking nonmaintenance of roads for which road users such as vehicle owners pay road tax. Or when roads are cut for laying cables or pipelines but left un-repaired. A toll or tax is collected for permission to cut, the amount to be used for repair work. But this repair work is rarely, if at all, carried out. In the US you often see billboards 'Your taxes at work' on highways where repair work is going on. And the repairs are carried out expeditiously to put the road users to minimum difficulty.

You feel the pinch – the pinch is most painful with government inaction towards corruption by its own employees. Amusingly, employees who expect and accept bribes are sometimes loudest in the criticism of the government.

They also talk of the rampant corruption all round!

Cynics and sourpuss, at the drop of a hat, will blame the unseen government for every personal, social and community difficulty. If there are pot holes on roads, the municipality (local government) has not done anything. If farmers commit suicide, due to unbearable burden of loans, the government has not done anything. If street lights do not light up during night time but show up during daytime, the Electricity Board (again government) has not done anything. And so it is easy to pass on the blame to the invisible government, but precious little can be done to remedy the situation or solve the problem. In mitigation, in recent times, judicial activism has been targeting erring officials. A government official was recently reprimanded by the High Court and the official tendered unqualified apology.

This has to some extent eased the situation.

But to the common man or aam admi the government is invisible and like the Abominable Snow Man in the mountains, the government is an Abominable No-Man to the people!

A group of scientists from the National Institue of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) in Japan have developed a new type of glass that transforms into a mirror or window pane at the flip of a switch. When the temperature is high, the glass can be converted into a mirror that deflects sunlight and heat. It can be converted back into a transparent pane when the temperature falls. The dual purpose glass, which is suitable for use in buildings and cars, can reduce in cooling and heating costs.

2. Tamil spoken by an estimated 64 million pepole around the world, is one of the official languages of Singapore.

3. Most Expensive Potato: Who would have thought that something as common as a potato would make this list?

La Bonnotte is the world's most expensive potato. With only 100 tonnes of this potato reared every year, a single kilogram can cost up to INR 34,998. Why? Because these potatoes can only be grown in the presence of a rare seaweed fertilizer in a climate shaped by the sea. This rare

climate and seaweed, incidentally, can only be found on the island Noirmoutier in France.

4. China's economy grew 7 times as fast as America's over the past decade.

5. Did you know that the pirates believed that piercing the ears and wearing an earring improved one's eyesight? This belief was ridiculed by everyone centuries ago. But it was later explained, in the light of the theory of acupuncture, that the earring, besides being an ornamental decoration has other benefits too. Apparently, the point on the ear lobe where the ear is pierced corresponds to an auricular point, which also controls the eyes, thereby improving the eyesight.

Dear Editor, Through the GO, my co-chairperson Rajiv Behal and I would like to profusely thank all the Rotarians, Rotary Anns and other individuals who selflessly came forward to contribute to the kitty from where we distribute scholarships. It is because of their contributions that we were able to do whatever little we could towards helping children from the deprived sections of society to continue with their schooling.

Our club winning the District Award for "Promotion of literacy" can be attributed in no small measure to their generosity.

We look forward to their continued support and also call upon those Rotarians/Anns who were unable to do so this year, to avail of this opportunity to display their magnanimity in the coming year.

BUSINESS MEETING

Business Meeting was held on 27 Jun., 2013 at “Udyog Bhawan”. President Atul Shah called the meeting to order. He welcomed the members and requested for Half a minute silent prayer in memory of devastated tragedy at Uttarakhand.

President announced the Birthday & Anniversary greetings to members.

Hon. Sec. Shabbar Shakir read the minutes of last Business Meeting held on 2nd May. House confirmed the minutes. Treasurer's Announcements were made by Alok Goenka. He informed about healthy bank balance position after completion of the year.

President Atul informed the members about development in Melghat proposal.

As this was last business meeting of the year, President read out his report for the year. He elaborated about activities carried out by various committees during the year and contribution of all the chairpersons who worked hard for the success of the programs. He specially praised individual board members for their support and contribution throughout the year. He thanked past presidents for their guidance. All the members present gave standing ovation for the successful presidential year and leadership of President Atul. PDG Bobby Srinivas summed up the year on behalf of all the past presidents and congratulated Atul and his board for happy and successful year.

The Rotary District 3030 conferred citation on 10 of our members who have completed 35 years of service to Rotary. President Atul handed over the same to the members present. He also presented district awards won by our club for the current year in 10 different categories; prominent among them was award for best club considering all five avenues of services.

Hon. Secretary Shabbar Shakir also thanked all the members for their contribution and support throughout the year.

Incoming Hon. Secretary Sunil Bhatia informed about forthcoming installation meeting going to be held on 4th July.

The meeting was adjourned with singing of the national anthem.

The meeting of Thursday the 13 saw our PP Shabbir the Shakir donning the mantle of ' Bharkha Dutt' of NDTV 24x7 and conducting 'We The People' style programme on the topic 'The Role of Media in Today's Scam Ridden Society'. The 'Experts' he invited were, Treasurer Alok Goenka, Atul Gupta, Aakash Agrawal, Amitabh Sinha, Sandeep Dhodapkar, Sharad Bhave and SurpriseSurprise, our Assistant Governor TS Uberoi.

There was a lively discussion on the topic with full throated participation of the audience. PP Sati Khanna and PP DK Sahani and others gave their valuable point of views.

It lived up to its hype in every which way even though it wasn't Friday the 13th!Not only the format of the program was new , even the seating arrangement of the regular meeting was changed to give it a theatrical

arrangement ! And Theaterical it was .. with voices reaching high pitch and Shabbir ducking but also attacking with the volleys of comments and suggestions from all corners.

Drama was at its peak with Rtn. Akash relating the role of media to the “Samudra Manthan” signifying that all the venom (ZAHAR) being removed from the AMRIT due to the role of media ! The analytical Amitabh going into the root cause analysis of the media definition itself ! The usually loud ALok for a change not giving his signature guffaw.. but giving lot of gyan . Shabbir and only he could conduct this so well , kudos !

The conclusion was that media has indeed played a big role in amplifying the scams and sensitizing the people and the agencies towards this scourge. However , with power comes responsibility and the media should exercise the same !

BLOOD DONATION

SRPF A blood donation camp was organized at State Reserve Police Force Group 13 situated at Hingna Road. The commandant of group 13 Mr Avinash Ambhure was posted at Nashik earlier where he came in contact with a Rotarian there. He showed willingness to organize a blood donation camp at his unit.

Nashik club's Rotarian got in touch with President Atul and things thus moved forward.

Incidentally Mr Ambhure was also a Rotarian from Rotary Club of Jalgaon West. This was also the first time this year that we arranged camp in association with blood bank of Indira Gandhi Medical College (Mayo). A lot of credit

for this goes to Dr Archana Patel. She coordinated with Mayo blood bank and also roped in members of Art of Living. Mrs Ashwini Girhe of Mayo blood bank managed it very efficiently. The camp began early morning at 8.30 am. Mr Avinash Ambhure was the first one to donate and lead by example. Young police men were already enrolled and the number was 89 even before the camp started.

Eventually the camp collected 103 units. It is noteworthy since it was held during summer month when requirement is large and also for the fact that these policemen often require blood due to injuries suffered during conflict

while performing duty. President Atul, Hon Secretary Shabbar and Director Parag Paranjpe attended the camp.

ZEON SOLUTIONS One more corporate joined hands with the club. Zeon solutions, an IT company based in software technology park conducted the blood donation camp on world blood donors day on

14th June 2013. The employees of the company had participated in large numbers during Walkathon. Few of the employees wanted to donate blood and thus triggered the

So as is the usual practice, most of the participants got together over a pound dinner and What an evening?

The first Rains of the season, brought smiles on every face. The discomfort caused was

idea to hold camp at the company premises itself. The camp began at their impressive office at IT park at 11 am in the morning and was on till 5pm. The HR team estimated that 35-40 people would donate but with a total strength of 200+ and good propaganda by the HR ensured that count was a robust 82 units.

Mr Anurag Shivhare, the centre incharge and Ms Amruta Bargal, Executive HR did an excellent job and assured cooperation in future service projects of the club.

EKAL VIDYALAYA

On 24th June, a cheque of Rs.80,000/- only was handed over to the President of Gramotthan Parishad, Mr.Nikhil Mundle, by our President Shri Atul Shah. The Gramotthan Parishad manages over 47000 schools all over the country to cater to the academic needs of students in tribal and remote areas. Our club has sponsored 5 such schools situated in Yavatmal district.

Our own National Award winning Rtn. Shailaja Pingle briefed the gathering about the activities of the Gramotthan Parishad and thanked the club for its support. Both the Presidents Atul and Nikhil also addressed the gathering.

GURU GOBIND SINGH EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE Continuing with their Scholarship distribution activities, the venue for Rtns. Rajiv Behal and Sandip on Tuesday 25th June morning was the Guru Gobind Singh Educational Institute on Kamptee Road. A cheque of Rs.80,500/- only was duly handed over to the President of the the school Sardar Jaswinderpal Singh Rajpal by our President Shri Atul Shah. The students of the school recited prayers and our own Rotarian Surinderpal Singh, the Secretary of the School thanked the Rotary Club for its support. The

Principal Ms. Amita Shukla and Head Mistress Ms. Vandana Jain also spoke on the occasion.

The Principal informed the gathering that one of the sponsored children, Amogh Ramteke, secured distinction marks in 3 subjects in the SSC exams this year. President Atul addressed the students and wished them well for their academics and also their career.

ST.URSULA GIRLS' HIGH SCHOOL On 27th June 2013, the Scholarships Committee, at an impressive function organised

by St.Ursula Girls' High School, gave the academic careers of 150 deserving, but needy students of the school a boost by presenting a cheque of Rs.3.75 lakhs to the Principal, Rtn.Rachna Singh, under PROJECT SMILING FACES. President Atul Shah spoke on the occasion and exhorted the students to progress in studies and continue their dedication towards academic progress while maintaining that service to mankind is akin to service to God. Chairperson Rajiv Behal also gave a motivational speech to the students and thanked all the donors who contributed large heartedly towards sponsoring the students. He also assured the school and the

students of even further support wherever required. Principal Rachna Singh informed the audience about the good performance of the students and also thanked the Rotary Club for their support.

Students of St.Ursula offered their thanks by

singing prayers and hymns. The program was attended by President Atul Shah, Hon. Secretary Shabbar Shakir, PPs Gulab Mahant, Rajan Bhatia, Vijay Naidu, Shabbir Shakir, Tauby Bhagwaghar and a host of other Rotarians and Anns.

VIDARBHA VANVASI KALYAN ASHRAM The Scholarship committee continued its commitment to 2 institutions on 26th June, 2013.

The first visit was to Vidarbha Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram, Ramdaspeth, Nagpur where a cheque of Rs. 60,000/- was handed over by President Atul Shah to Shri Dongre, the head of the institute. The Ashram provides lodging, boarding and educational facilities to a number of students from remote and backward regions of the state, predominantly Gadchiroli and Yavatmal. It was a

Rajiv and Sandip together with PP Shabbir Shakir then moved to Prabodh Educational Trust at Butibori which not only supports students in schools at Butibori but also complements education imparted in schools by assimilating formal education and imparting life skills in the students. Rotary Club has sponsored 30 such students and a cheque of Rs.75,000/- was duly handed over to Mr.Prabodh, the Managing Trustee, by PP Shabbir.

AT DEAF AND DUMB SCHOOL, SAONER \On the last working day of Club calendar year, Community welfare committee donated two group hearing aids (suitable for a class of 10 children) to Deaf and Dumb Residential School, Saoner on 29th June 2013.

During our visits to the school for various projects that we carried out thru out the year.

We realized the need for group hearing aids to the school. Out of 80 students who need to be taught on a group hearing aid, there were just enough hearing aids to help only thirty students. Committee decided to provide two more group hearing aids to ensure that children are not deprived of opportunity to learn and be educated.

The presence of interact president Ayushi Kamble, Secretary Areeni Rao , and Director Prachi mende of south point school was the highlight of the project. Interactors from south point school who worked hard during Annand mela at their school and generated money by selling mocktails. The money was then donated to our club for one of our service projects. Interactors from south point school were invited to be a part of the project.

President Ayushi thanked Rotary club of Nagpur for giving interactors an opportunity to be a part of this wonderful experience. She promised to share her experience with other interactors in the school and also promised to

Our Club had collected Rs.83,000/- at UDAAN during IPP Tauby's tenure. It was decided that this amount be spent for welfare of Physically Challenged children.

Our Club decided and sponsored 3 for young kids suffering heart ailment- Heart Surgeries under the Dil se Dil Tak scheme. The cheque was presented to Dr. Varun Bhargava of CARE HOSPITAL. Members present were President Atul Shah, Hon Secretary Shabbar Shakir, Treasurer Alok Goenka, PDG Madhu Rughwani and District Treasurer Rajeev Agrawal.

JOINT CLUB ASSEMBLY The last Club Assembly, which was a joint assembly of our club was held at Hotel Centre Point on Sunday, 23rd June 2013. Described in the President's own words as â&#x20AC;&#x153;Revengeâ&#x20AC;? for making him wake up early over the past year, this was a 'Breakfast Assembly' which started at 8 am on a beautiful Sunday morning. After sumptuous breakfast the meeting started in earnest with each Director in turn outlined the great work done by committees associated with his/her avenue of service, following which each report got generous ovation from the full house. Each Chairperson present was then called by the President who presented a token

of his appreciation for the good work done.

The quantum of work done by the committees this year can be gauged by the fact that the assembly stretched for an hour over the allotted time. Past President Sati Khanna summed up the year in his inimitable style and praised the Board in general and Prez Atul in particular for their dynamic leadership and committed execution of duties. Asst. Governor Dr. Oberoi then gave his views on the year gone by and was literally lost for words. Yet he beautifully and poetically put things in perspective and left all feeling great about themselves and their club. The thunderous

ovation by all those present at the close of the assembly left no doubt in anyone's mind that this was a tremendously successful year for the Club.

MATCHING GRANT PROJECT AT MATRU SEVA SA N G H, SITABULDI, SU N DAY, 9 TH JU NE 2013

The regular meeting of Thursday 6th June was postponed to 9th June for the handing over of Neo Natal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Matru Seva Sangh Sitabuldi (MSS) under the Matching Grant Project (MG) of The Rotary Foundation (TRF). The program began at 10 am at MSS meeting room at Sitabuldi. President Atul Shah chaired the meeting. Also present on the dais were District Rotary Foundation Chair (DRFC) Sangram Singh Bhonsale, Director TRF Rtn Manjot Singh Kahai, MG committee chair Rtn Dr Manmohan Daga, Secretary of MSS Dr (Mrs) Lata Deshmukh and Hon Secretary Rtn Shabbar Shakir.

Matching Grant: It is a unique program of The Rotary Foundation. It has become one of the most effective mediums of serving the society. It serves the dual purpose of international co-operation and community service.

The beauty of this program is that the total benefit is four times the club's contribution. The contribution by the partner clubs is matched by TRF. Chief Guest of the program, DRFC PDG Sangram Singh Bhonsale informed about the role of Rotary Foundation and explained how a small contribution to TRF by each Rotarian can work wonders through projects like these.

The Partner in Service: Matru Seva Sangh established in 1921 is a 92 year old Non Profit Organisation. Two ladies, namely Late Mrs Kamaltai Hospet and Vaenutai Nene founded this organisation primarily to serve in the area of maternal and child health care. Its history is a saga of confronting adversity with courage, converting challenges into opportunities and serving people with love, dedication and discipline. Today it runs Maternity Home & Hospital, Institute of social work, School for mentally challenged, Home for the Aged, Child Adoption Services, Working Women's Hostel and Family Counseling Center. Dr Lata Deshmukh, Secretary of MSS gave this information during the handing over program.

Partner Club: Rotary club of Emmaus District 7430 USA is the partner club for this matching grant. President Rtn Cynthia Hornman and Rtn Gul Asnani took great efforts to make this MG a reality. President Atul Shah in his speech acknowledged their wholehearted contribution.

There would many members in Rotary Club of Emmaus who may not be aware about Nagpur or the MSS. The only common thread is the Rotary and the strong desire to serve the underprivileged. This desire, he said is the strength of Rotary.

The project: Pre mature born babies and the babies born with severe ailment require special attention. The Government hospitals are already overburdened.

Private hospitals are too expensive for common people. It can be as high as Rs 4000-5000 per day. MSS has been providing this facility at nominal cost but lacked the necessary equipment. The MG committee headed by Dr Manmohan Daga studied the requirement and the feasibility and decided to implement the project. The total project cost is US $ 32,000. Rotary Club of Emmaus contributed US $ 8,500. MSS allotted the area next to existing set up and the NICU with following instruments was handed over; Neo Natal Ventilator – 1 Baby Warmers – 4 Infusion Pumps – 2 Syringe Pumps – 2 Multi Para Monitors – 2 Portable X-Ray Machine – 1 Air Conditioner (2 Tons) – 1 Invertor with backup (3 KVA) – 1 Voltage Stabilizer (5 KVA) – 1 Washing Machine – 1 Electronic Weighing Scale – 1 Accessories for equipment mentioned above MSS undertook the responsibility for maintenance and sustainability of the unit. The program was well attended by the Rotarians and Rotary Anns.

Yet another Rotary year draws to a close and it is time to take stock. Some heave a sigh of relief that it's over, some look forward to more of the same next year, some are, as usual, indifferent. And it is in not involving this segment that our club has lost out.

Imagine ... so much talent, so much service capability, so much manpower gone to waste. I am not accusing the seniors or directors or the board for this failure as much as these individuals themselves. You are in Rotary because you are a leader in your vocation. And you did not get to be a leader in your vocation by just sitting in one place and doing nothing. So if you are in Rotary and are doing nothing, then that's criminal.

Speaking of criminal, the recent situation in Uttarakhand reminds us of how this country runs itself in spite of, not because of the Government. So much has been aired about the inefficiency, neglect and carelessness of the authorities that it has made a bad situation worse with horrifying consequences. As a matter of fact even the bodies which govern these major religious places cannot escape responsibility. It is common knowledge that after our self-serving politicians, our religious bodies are among the richest in the land. They get unspeakably obscene amounts of donation every day and have been getting for years. Can't they just return some of the booty to the pilgrims by way of better security? Be it better access facilities or lodging or clean surroundings?

Is it not their responsibility to make sure that the benefactors thronging their temples in lakhs get decent comfort and security? Even after televised proof of Government apathy they remain mute witnesses to the destruction and despair around them?

What a shame!

Are we also witnessing the beginning of the end of our age-old legacies? I mean today it is Uttarakhand, tomorrow it will be another popular shrine which cannot withstand the strain around it. People, buildings, vehicles, pollution ... all work together till even God says enough is enough! I can't take the pressure anymore! It is in fact a very vicious circle. The more inaccessible the religious abode, the popular it is. The greater the hardship in reaching the place, the bigger the blessing (so they say). One surprising and saddening truth is that in a place where salvation of the soul is promised, the total absence of humanity is delivered. This fact was proven by the locals in Uttarakhand who fleeced stranded fellow humans for basic necessities like food and water. The pilgrims had gone to the Gods while the locals had gone to the dogs.

Environmentalists have warned for long that Man vs. Nature is an unequal fight.

Nature WILL win. And when nature strikes back annihilation is imminent. Even we, as Rotarians, with our little, insignificant acts of environment conservation cannot escape blame. We plant trees, take photographs, publish projects and then forget them for one whole year, till we go back the next year for the same project to realise that the trees are no more. The cycle repeats itself everywhere. The truth of the matter is that everything we do and everything we say comes from everything we feel. When we feel we should make a difference that is the day this cycle will reverse. Till that day everything that happens is “Ram Bharose”.

And even God is not on our side now.

A new President, GO with a new look, with a new Editor and maybe a new person, writing this column.

So before I bid adieu, let me share a few things with you.

Like I said last time, Raghav, son of Vanita & Rajiv Shukul is achieving new heights.

He went to Tokyo, after being selected for the Asia Pacific rounds of Moot Court and WON. So now he shall be competing with students from Europe, Africa & America, during the World Rounds at Beijing - China.

He has also been awarded the IISL young scholar award.

Blessings seem to be pouring on him like the rains!

Like the rains, awards came pouring to our club, at the recent Award Ceremony at Jalgaon.

The club got many awards but PP Rajan Bhatia got an RI recognition for his work for Polio.

The District Governor appreciated the efforts of PP Gulab Mahant as the Dist. Chair for Awards and yours truly for GML. Ridhima, daughter of Anita & Manmohan Sharma shall tie the knot at delhi on 19th July.

May the heaven's blessings be showered on the couple.

Our editor Shabbir, was away with Jumana & family for a holiday in Goa. Vineeta & Shridhar Pasari, enjoyed a 2 week sojourn with their boys in Australia.

Deepa Kale is bonding with sis. in Coonoor.

Drs. Shobha & Manu Daga shall soon be going to Singapore.

Ganesh & Asha Joshi & Arun & Kanak Bhargava will soon be off to the US of A. While all these comings & goings, happen, the Rotary Wheel has moved a full circle and President Prashant Kale & his team of office bearers shall take over from Atul & his team.

THE INFORMATION OVERLOAD AND RISK FOR AN INVESTOR Modern era has brought in revolution in the way we collect, analyse and disseminate information. Financial markets are no exception to it. Numerous reports related to economy, markets, commodities, companies, currency, interest rates, sectors are published daily across the world. These include reports from Government organisation (Indian as well as foreign governments) Organisations like Central Statistical organisation (CSO), International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank and financial institutions and investment banking organisations from India and abroad like Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, Merrill Lynch, HSBC, Kotak etc.

In investment world, risk is one the most dreaded word. Investment Gurus, Economist and analyst world over have spent considerable amount of time and energy to either remove or reduce risk. Many statistical tools have been devised to figure out and quantify the risk of a particular investment. Modern economic theory has given rise to new risk called behavioural risk. It talks about the way a person reacts to set of circumstances in deciding for or against the investment, allocation of resources. Needless to say, information (or too much of it) causes this risk to increase.

In highly interlinked financial markets, any news related to any major commodity like oil surely going to send shock waves across the economies. India is no exception, particularly its huge dependence on imported oil. Another annual feature in India is behaviour of Monsoon. India has been predominantly an agricultural economy. Lack of irrigation facility means (over) dependence on rains. The stock market is no exception. Though there is no conclusive data on the stock market returns and performance of Monsoon, but it does make the index swing wildly.

There is no dearth of information that causes panic or joy amongst investors. Politics, news related to businessman or business house, trend of foreign investments, inflation, deflation, natural calamities, international events all add to the moods of the stock market. It will be interesting to go through some of the information that analyst track. Are we money managers who need to track if not all but many of the parameters mentioned above or are we investors for our own financial well-being? Time and again it has been proved that success in financial investment has very little bearing on the timing the market and small percentage in deciding the asset class where we invest. A large chunk of investor's returns are made by deciding on proper asset allocation. This can be ensured if we have the allocation strategy right. The allocation depends on various factors like risk tolerance, time horizon and identifying financial goals with accuracy. These factors are very much in our control so long as all the noises from all quarters of the financial world don't carry us away.

Lot of data and no good information has threatening rational decision-making.

Berkshire Hathaway chairman and legendry investor Warren Buffet doesn't sit in New York, the financial capital of the world but in small town on Oklahoma with no TV or Internet to distract logical thinking. Stay away for noise and enjoy the process of sound investing.
