President’s Message As I get down to pen my thoughts for the last President's Message, there's a surge of emotions. A rush of memories. A flitting of images across the mind's eye of hours of work and moments of fulfillment. Fortunately, the imprints of happy moments far outnumber those of strife. I recall how enthusiasm and apprehension took up the mind space as I readied myself to don the mantle. Will I falter? Will I fall? Will I do justice to the confidence imposed in me? Will I be able to be a gift to the world? Time and again, thoughts such as these cropped up and one felt diffident. And, time and again one had to remind one's self that one was not alone.
Taking baby steps and treading with caution; learning on the job and most of all, assisted by the strong, steady and able Board, one has reached the shore. Whether the voyage was smooth or shaky is for the members to judge! As for me, it was a year of fulfilling experiences and great learning. It was without much ado, we all went about our tasks; satisfied in the knowledge that whatever we did, we did with our hearts in the right place and heads held high. Each Director was hands on in her/his approach; rallying behind the Chairpersons with all their might. There were time when multiple Committees seamlessly blended and attained
befitting success. I only hope you all carry forward happy memories of the year gone by. As we bring the curtain down on the Rotary Year 2015-16, lets remember to always Be a Gift to the World. Khushnoor S.Chugh
To Ponder... forget the celebrations dotting once in a while. So a huge round of applause for the president and her board for such a fruitful year. And as said ' the old order changeth yielding place to new', we have our next board of knights in their shining armours ready to serve the mankind. So “All the Best to the New captain and his crew”. I would end my last editorial for this year by a 'saying' which if followed shall always keep one thrilled in life:“Live everyday as if it were your last because someday you're going to be right.” Durriya Akolawala

Muhammad Ali, considered to be the greatest heavyweight boxer, died late Friday night in a Phoenixarea hospital at 74 years old. So sagaciously has he said the following that has intrigued me and which should also be a quote to be remembered by all my dear Rotarian friends.. "Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.” Six years back when I was introduced to Rotary, I was clueless of what this club was all about. But, all in all, it was only as an editor that all the projects and services became crystal clear to me. I observed the diligent workers, the keen learners, the fast movers and the sly fakers. As in the previous years, in this year too there has been immense selfless contributions by the rotary members for the welfare of their kind. There has been sweat, toil and labour and proper utilisation of each and every minute for altruistic deeds. And off course not to

It has been an amazing summer vacation…flying off to distant lands to explore the culture of another civilization is always fascinating. The excitement for the kids starts from the airplane ride and continues throughout the entire duration. Meeting new people, getting acquainted with foreign customs, learning how to navigate oneself in foreign supermarkets, perfecting the art of sign language to communicate was a great experience. We learnt the basic few words to help us survive the country … japan...'konichiwa' to greet all followed by a gentle bowing gesture..'meat nashi' no meat in the food we order…the navigators constant rambling of 'jiutai' traffic jam ahead…'daijo' it doesn't matter – please go ahead. Little nuances of nodding ones chin while speaking and the omnipresent word for the accompanying five year old ..'kwai' very cute. The Japanese are a very honest and humble race. At the entertainment centre, by 7 in the evening we were pooped, but the mime artist who we happened to bump into all day performed with the same zeal at 10 in the morning and at 7 in the evening. Technology rules the country. In the day to day routine as well high end technology is present. One could go on and on. All in all a fantastic break. It has really been an eventful year with a lot of projects and events. It has been a tremendous learning experience for us as editors and we have enjoyed everyone moment of it. Of course none of It would have been possible without the hard work of our contributors/columnists and the proactive Board. So its Au Revoir to Team 15-16 and awaiting to don the mantle for 2016-17. Meeting questions is how do we make Rotary relevant to those youngsters. I think it's now time, that we need to innovate and recalibrate. We must take stock of our 'NPA'. Talk to them, persuade them, & even then, if they fail to contribute, remove them. Rtn. Vijay Naidu Aapan ethe kashala busloy? (Read in Marathi). His Marathi did create laughter, but what he meant was its not just debate, it's an occasion of 'Soul Searching' for members of the club, young and old alike. He further observed that there are far too many groups in our club. Once, we enter the meeting halls-forget the group. A message of unity should go out from here. Rtn. Dinesh Naidu He straightaway presented the Statistics. In last two years 60 members were inducted, whereas from 2006-16 in all 175 new members joined the Rotary Club. Sharing his own experience, he confided “I got very good help in my early years in the club”. Citing a recent experience he said, despite efforts not many turned up for the B-B Program. Further he said – responsibility of a new
member should be taken by his proposer. That may improve the quality of the new entrant. He categorically said – people are RCN especially for 'enhanced prestige' in the society. Focusing on service – he reiterated that we are all here primarily to encourage and foster service to the society. Rtn. Sapna Vastani She was there to represent young ones. She said – “If new ones watch the seniors and observe their sincerity at projects that provides enough motivation”. Further she forewarned “the old members have to not only guide the fresh Rotarians, but be strict when necessary. In her opinion, once in every decade, it's time to revamp and reset – the systems, the projects et al. Moderator PP Shabbir summed up the discussion. His concluding remarks were “No harm growing bigger and bigger, but handholding of old members with the new ones is necessary to improve their involvement in the projects and develop “Service” culture in the club. Secretary Rtn. Parag Paranjpe offered vote of thanks. Sharad Bhave

PP Rtn. Shabbir Shakir, the Moderator invited Panelists to discuss “The Problem of Plenty – is RCN ready for more?” His opening remarks were, “Every year thousands are added, yet the number of Rotarians worldwide, is the same. Quite intriguing”. From 120 members in 2000 rose to 380+ in 2016. He introduced the panel members. Rtn. Rita Aggarwal, Rtn. Sapna Vastani, Rtn. Rajiv Behal, Rtn. Vijay Naidu & Rtn. Dinesh Naidu. The discussion has been put forward in a nutshell. The views of the speakers are presented in a concise and precise manner. Rtn Rajiv Behal While the membership is on the rise, attendance at projects is declining. Has the leadership not failed in assimilating efforts of the young ones? Is it primarily possible to do 'handholding' when 30 new members are added every year? Why not have stringent measures for the performance of a new entrant? We expect members to go much beyond sheer fellowship & networking. Rtn Rita Aggarwal It's a pleasure always, to have plenty. The

at less than 1meter depth from the ground. It was heartening to see a herd of deer galloping through the fields to drink water from the treated streams. The sight of several open wells being constructed by farmers along both sides of all the three streams reflected the confidence of the farmers on the work done by RCN. The final stop of the convoy was at Jalka Village. After a short puja at the Rotary Club of Nagpur Display Board, the team joined the Gram Sabha of Jalka and Krishnapur Villages assembled at the Village Temple. Blast from the Past .If we shut out the world, if we try and put up a moat round our intellectual property ,and keep doing what we were doing thinking we are the smartest in the worl, we are going to die of mental suffocation. We have to have big ideas to share, and not big walls to confine, So that we can do whatever can be done with anyone ,anywhere, anytime, From birth of death, our lives are enriched by the research and knowledge contributed by men of different faiths, different nations. these were men who never thought in terms of flags or boundary lines. Their loyalty was to the welfare of humanity as a whole .you Rotarians epitomize this spirit .May you continue to nurture it as you grow and flourish . We, as Indians, pride ourselves on being high-minded and religious. Religion is not what is enshrined in brick and mortar, or in bell, book and candle. Religion is love for mankind, and service to humanity is its true and ultimate expression. “Call that true piety,” says the Bhagvad Gita, “which most removes heartaches and ills.” And I quote the wise one, who says, “A man who cannot love a brother he can see, cannot love a god whom he has never seen.” This is what the intellectuals, and men and women with a social conscience, like all of you Rotarians, realize. You have already become aware of your mission to build a universal society. “More strength to your elbow,” is what I wish you. What I have been saying so far
is that what one does, inevitably, affects other human beings. But, what is possibly less recognized is that man's inaction might affect an even wider circle. To quote Edmund Burke, “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.” A story is told of a small town in Europe, where stood a statue of Christ in the market square. Vandals invaded the town, looted and ransacked it, and, in the process, the statue was broken. When the vandals left, the townspeople gathered together the broken pieces and set up the statue again—only they could not find the hands. So, under statue were engraved these words,” He has no hands but our. And that is the crux of the matter. Any organization, or society or state or country has no hands but ours. It is what we give to it that will make it or mar it. And, in the final analysis, we shall be judge, as Paul Harris said, not by the creeds we profess or the slogans we shout or the labels we wear, but by our work and our life itself. May you, dear Rotarians of the Rotary Club of Nagpur, learn from the past, take time to serve in the present, reach out to a future of world understanding, because you have put Rotary into your lives and have learned to look beyond yourselves. May peace be with you as you continue to lead the way, today and always. Peroja E. Eduljee
JULY 2016 GOLDEN ORANGE
From what little I have seen and read of the Nagpur Rotary Club these last few years, I have felt that the enthusiastic and dedicated Rotarians of this Club are helping to strengthen the already sturdy foundation of the Rotary edifice. Within this monolith lies the Rotary family, each member of which has pledged to serve man and to create conditions in the world for the fullest development of his dignity as a man. This world, our home, is in ferment today. Its peace has been lost. That pace can only return when men and women are big enough to see the human race as a whole. To add to the world's woes, there is little hope for man's physical survival, unless the current trends of increasing pollution, soil erosion, and other environmental horrors are reversed. Drug trafficking, terrorism, population control, the evils of dowry, child labor the appalling lake of hygiene and sanitation in our public places, to name only a few---all these are matters of grave concern. Whose concern? To your credit you have made some of them your concern. To that I shall say, “Lage raho !” In this era of globalization, so many people now have communication and innovation tools to complete connect and collaborate from anywhere. So, whatever connects and collaborate from anywhere. So, whatever cannot be done by one country, will be done by someone somewhere else .The question is whether it will be done by you or to you or for you

The land of Fire and Ice...! It was all white and barren. The jagged lava fields and mossy hills were blanketed with ice and snow. The backdrop of white desert and one of the most beautiful desolate landscapes in the world was set for twenty five insane Indians who dared to brave the sub zero temperatures standing on a volcano with frozen lake to witness the divine silence in ICELAND. The Iceland Expedition to be featured in Limca Book of Records started from the capital city Reykjavik. It was seven days of self driving over the glaciers, through the mountains, waterfalls, geothermal hot springs, lava fields and volcanoes. We were a convoy of seven robust, specially modified 4 W D To y o t a H i l l u x mountain trucks fitted with snow tyres and a wireless radio. A group of four in each monster ,taking turns behind the wheel. We had an adventure in store for us and day two turned out to be a thrilling lifetime experience, when a heavy snow storm approached us while we were at the top of the glacier hurriedly trying to cross the pass. Our radio beeped and the control car instructed convoy to turn back. No one anticipated, that our disappointment of not getting across the glacier to see the ice caves was little to the disaster awaiting us. When we were heading back slowly in low 4WD with almost zero visibility, gusty winds and pounding snowfall, two of our cars started sinking and got stuck in more than two feet of snow. We deflated the tyre pressure and shoveled the snow to make the track, but all was in vain.
16
Finally, after breaking two toeing ropes and a hook, the vehicles were skillfully pulled out. We survived the onslaught, drenched in wet clothes, freezing hands and a memory to live for. It was thrilling to cruise a twenty five mile long snowy mountain road on eight psi tyre pressure to spend a night in a mountain hut. I would like to cherish the beauty of this abode nestled in the snow clad mountains overlooking the hot springs. The hut was a wooden structure with a kitchen and two dormitories which lacked washroom facility. A block of toilets was few steps away and you
needed to walk out of the warm hut in freezing cold to use it. The atmosphere was electric when we started cooking our dinner. Ambience was crying for Cognac and roasted lamb was eager to seek our attention."Musafir hu yaroon, na ghar hai na thikana" was sung in chorus with a guitar strumming which made it really situational. Iceland is not a destination, it’s an adventure, where the “real”meets the “surreal”. Here ‘Cold’ is only a state of mind. India can save the world or so the scientists at Bee Jay Pee Research laboratories would have us believe. They have stumbled upon a breakthrough that will fetch them a tsunami of accolades. China will feel like a cretin, CERN will turn a beetroot red and Pakistan will sulk and go green. Speculations are rife that the research team is now a strong contender for the Nobel Prize. Not just one, but all categories. Like a true blockbuster it is strongly backed by fiction, has sizzling chemistry and can usher in world peace. This hitherto unknown headquarter of the geniuses is located in Tikamgarh, an unsung hamlet of a Middling State. The scientist community is abuzz with excitement. It's not every day that a third class research centre manages to produce such first class results. Imagine coming up with a mother of magic potions that is an answer to all your miseries! Liberal quantities of it can insulate you from nuclear radiations. All you have to do is coat the walls of your house with this brown goo and voila you can say bye-bye to all your fears of apocalypse. Its application can prevent C- section and ensure normal deliveries for women. It is still not clear how and where it should be applied. This magic potion found in abundance in India, can be picked straight off the roads and fresh samples can be procured from bovine behinds. Yep...I am talking about the humble cow dung. Hold your Bullshit please, there's more to come! So impressed is China with our Cowtheory that they have decided to rename

INtelligent INvestment PERSONAL FINANCE WIDGETS We so look forward to drama and intrigue, be it our movies or our investments. So Britain decided to renegotiate terms of engagement with Europe, and stop the immigrants from entering their country, a.k.a., Brexit, Bas, fir kya tha!!! It was as if our markets had ended. Stocks fell like ninepins , till better sense prevailed. Shaadi kisi aur ki, ho gaye Abdullah ji deewane. Except for some Indian companies who have local presence, there isn't much that impacts us. Now the resultant uncertainty of the EU, and then the subsequent currency movements, is another story, more drama, more intrigue. After Brexit, my exit cues from the GO are in place too, so I bid you farewell and end this series of personal finance widgets with a few points for you all to ponder. The biggest brand today is.. yes you guessed it..Apple!
But the man who actually created the first image of Apple was Ronald Wayne, one of the original promoters of Apple Inc. He sold off his 10% stake in the company 15 days later for US dollars 800. The point to ponder here is, why bother investing if you can't stay the course and if you don't have faith in where you are investing? The next point…..Hindsight is always 6/6. And the three words that no one likes to hear and no one should actually utter-“ I TOLD YOU SO”. And then another point to ponder, kind of ricochets off the second one…….. Clairvoyance,…. only Babas with bhabootis have it!! Your investments are but a reflection of your personality. So do what you feel comfortable doing, i e invest in what makes you comfortable,(Sleepwell Mattresses???) Just like some people are born risk
takers, some others will always walk the beaten path; because, to some the glass is half empty, and to others, half full. Matter of perception too. They are also a barometer of your financial obligations. More obligations generally mean lower risk taking abilities. Since everyone can't be a doctor, lawyer, engineer and a CA at the same time, it does make sense to take advice from someone trustworthy and capable of giving it. So friends, in our world where technology is making businesses and jobs obsolete overnight, it is imperative to have your plan B ready to serve you in times of need. Build a nest egg from day 1, and if you have been a slow starter, still, do make a start. And last, but not the least, just ensure that you invest, the power of compounding will take care of the rest. ALL THE BEST!!
other political incidents that happened during those times. And the most important of all was when Arvind and Arbaaz meet in the plane to Hyderabad!! Then there are these other moments like India's World Cup Victory, the rise of Khans in Bollywood, etc that did not allow me to keep the book down till I finished. We also see Bombay turning into Mumbai and Calcutta turning into Kolkata and Madras turning into Chennai. A good game of business, politics, Mumbai Underworld, Financial scams and rivalry between two rising powerful men is also a part of this capturing must read. The book in itself is undoubtedly a 5 out of 5 star and we can not even imagine what amount of Sanghi's research this book reflects . But still when we compare it with the author's previous books like the Krishna Key, Chanakya's Chant or the Rozobal Line, I personally think this book can fair only for a 4 star. Also the Title and the punchline ( '_when it
comes to money everybody is of the same religion_' ) are loosely justified. All in all for anybody into even little bit of fiction reading, this book is absolutely unmissable and for me I would be waiting for Ashwin's next as eagerly as I w a s waiting for this one. It is truly said that Ashwin is the Jeffery Archer of India or rather i would say he is the Indian version of Dan Brown. The two protagonists Arvind and Arbaz are born around our independence Year and are masterfully created. Both are '_jabra fans_' of money and yet a total opposite of each other. Even the characters around them are works of art and each one interesting to the core. The author infuses small portion of ancient secret history at various places in the book and we realise the connection as we reach towards the end of the original story which also relates with almost all important events in India from 1947 to 2010. It Is really a pleasure to read as the author narrates the connection and effects of these events with the life of both Arvind and Arbaz. It got me all smiling when I met Rajiv Gandhi, Vajpayee, Modi, Narasimha Reddy, swearing ceremony of Amma, and

I have known Manju Shahani since I was a young girl and I have always been in awe of her poise and elegance. I remember admiring her charm, her beautiful chiffon sarees, the way she graced the parties; the room filled with her laughter and energy. Time flies and here I am, writing about this very special lady Our vice-president for year 2015-16, Manju Shahani, and‌ the awe remains. The admiration grows. The respect amplifies. It's a tough job to write about her. Not because there is scarcity of matter; infact, on the contrary; but because the personality is so multifaceted and highly accomplished that a few paragraphs will not do justice. When we met for this interview, she spoke about her childhood and told me how she was a naughty and hyperactive child but good at everything she did. Good in studies and equally good in extracurricular. Trained in classical dance style, she has performed before enthralled crowds in school days. She grew up in Gandhidham, in Kutch district, where her parents moved to from Lucknow, before her birth. Coming from a state capital herself, her mother took extra efforts to see that Manju and her two younger siblings got best education facilities in this small, then developing town of Gujarat. When she was a young girl, a family pundit predicted an early marriage. And believe it or not, she got her first marriage proposal at age 12. A proper proposal! Another at 15! Her mom lost it and said she was not getting Manju married till she turned 18. Sure enough, she got married at 18 yrs and 6 months to our handsome Rotarian and a thorough gentleman, Chandru Shahani. She settled into Nagpur life almost immediately, playing the
roles of wife and daughter -in -law perfectly. Soon, the house walls were covered with her lovely paintings, the plants in her garden blossomed under her loving care and the family grew fonder of her day by day. Blessed with two boys, Aashish and Anuj, Manju soon had her hands full. But she did find time for her hobbies-her fabric painting, crochet and bonding with friends. Her boys, both engineers, are now happily married and currently settled in United States of America. Manju and Chandru are doting grandparents to four lovely grandchildren. The paintings on her house walls are now replaced by happy family pics and artwork and drawings of her grandchildren. Always inclined towards community service, Manju and Chandru joined Jaycees earlier and Rotary in 1990 after being introduced to Rotary by PDG Vishwas Sahasrabhojnee. Chandru is an active past president (20012002) and Manju has held various posts and headed various projects for many years now. She has always given her best and a little extra to all the tasks she has undertaken. One of her most amazing qualities is that she gets along equally well with all age groups and makes everyone feel very comfortable and at ease in her presence. This is one of the many qualities of a leader that she possesses and Rotary is blessed that it shall run under her president-ship soon. She feels strongly towards various projects taken up by Rotary and one particular idea closest to her heart is doing something constructive and worthwhile for Old Age Homes. She is open to the idea of newer and more meaningful projects. Her sincerity and passion is seen in her dedication for the Rotary work which she carries about, always with a smile and a gust of energy. Manju is an inspiration to all, especially for the new Rotarians. A role model, from whom, they can learn the traits of becoming a perfect Rotarian. Respect.

Rtn Bharat Parekh spoke on Reinvent in Million Dollar Round Table (premier association of financial professionals) at Vancouver in Canada in June.
FAQ's and Facts about Organ Donation This edition deals with the basics of how can one get a kidney, the commonest organ required in India. You must be reading lately the kidney selling racket going on in the country. This was very common in the past, starting from Tamil Nadu in the 1980's where selling and buying of kidney was a norm as there were no regulations in place. The 'business' was thriving as poor people were willing to donate for a paltry sum. Many patients including from South Asian countries would get a transplant done routinely in Chennai. All this changed in early 90's when one foreigner was diagnosed to have got infected with HIV as a result of transplant. Overnight Tamil Nadu earned notoriety. Transplants came to a grinding halt. The Government of India promulgated Transplant of Human Organ Act (THOA) in 1994. The Act specifically
banned selling and purchasing of organs. The fear of HIV (AIDS) had also gripped the medical fraternity, who would not want to take any chances. The positive effect of this resulted in Tamil Nadu Government taking pro-active steps to not only curb the menace. Government Regulations (GR's) were promulgated and within a short period once gained the popularity of being the best State in the country for transplantation till date. The contribution of MOHAN Foundation with Head office in Chennai made a significant contribution of raising public awareness. The recent amendment in the Act in 2011 has made stringent punishment for selling and purchasing of kidney. LIVE R E L AT E D D O N AT I O N : L i v i n g donation takes place when a related person donates an organ (or part of an organ) for transplantation. The donor can be a grandparent, a parent, spouse, child,
siblings & grandchild. LIVE UNRELATED DONATION: Donation can also come from anyone for altruistic reasons, someone emotionally related to the recipient (friend), a second relation (cousin), a neighbor, etc. Such donors have to undertake stringent scrutiny and permission from Authorising Committee. DECEASED ORGAN DONATION: Kidneys and several other organs and tissues can be obtained from a BRAIN DEAD patient whose organs are functional due to Ventilator support. Consent of next of kin is mandatory. The patient has to register the name of the patient in the waiting registry. Distribution of kidney and organs is made according to the priorority rules. Rtn.
