L ast Tauby's Take.... My Dear Rotarians, No one, who is not in my situation, can appreciate my feeling at this parting, as I sit down to address my final letter to you. With this club and with the kindness of its members, I traversed through the most eventful year of my life. Without the assistance of that Divine being that was always by me, I could not have succeeded. With the support of my husband, my children and my family, I could not fail. Having your goodwill, trust and backing I would not go wrong. The events of the past year flash past me. So much has been achieved; so many lives have been touched. New friends have been made, new experiences added. Our club continued to amaze me each month as project after project was executed effectively. In the diversity of our members I found great strength. A part of you has grown in me, together forever we shall be never apart, maybe in distance, but not in the heart. Like all who have held office before me, I have experienced se t backs. There are things I would do differently if given the chance. Yet I have always acted with the best interests of our club in mind. I have followed my conscience and done what I thought was right. You may not agree with some decisions I have made, but I hope you can agree that I was willing to make the tough decisions. I truly believe that weakness of attitude becomes weakness of character. Amongst the many that were by my side unflinchingly during the year was my friend and mentor PP Shabbir, who guided me impartially and correctly even before I commenced my term. Thank you Shabbir and thank you once more for your stupendous effort which went into this year's Golden Orange. My Board joins me in wishing all the very best to the incoming team. In Atul's success we will find even greater joy and happiness. We look forward to yet another rewarding year and working with the incoming team. It has been the privilege of a lifetime to serve as your president. There have been good days and tough days. But every day I have been inspired by the greatness of our club and uplifted by the goodness of our members. I have been blessed to represent this club we love. And I will always be honoured to carry a title that means more to me than any other, “MEMBER OF THE ROTARY CLUB OF NAGPUR.” Good Bye and God bless, Tauby Bhagwagar President.

Straight from the heart.... Passion!!!! Consider a case study. We see many students pursuing commerce simply because they have failed to get admission into the science stream. Scores out of these go on to becoming Chartered Accountants. There are others who have decided since early days that they would be Chartered Accountants, pursue commerce by choice and end up being CAs. While both the set of people are equipped with the same qualifications, there is a vast difference between the two. One set exists, the other excels. One set is part of the crowd, the other stands out in a crowd. The difference is passion!!!! It is not what we do that defines excellence, but how we do it. Our actions fall into 3 major categories. We do things because we have to do it even though it is against our wishes and liking; We do things because that is the only available choice; Or we do it because we want to and are passionate about it. The task may be the same, the processes and results are different. Passion has another perspective. We may do things that we are passionate about and do it well. But there are some who psyche and motivate themselves to be passionate about everything that they do and consequently excel. To these people, excellence is a habit and that is the only way to be. While excellence is a boon, mediocrity is a curse. And the difference between excellence and mediocrity is often that one last step. That little extra effort. This 'one last step' or 'little extra effort' comes out of nothing but passion. Passions serve us well!!!!! Shabbir Shakir

For the children

Indeed 11-12 was an year of great significance in which you have given your very best to serve Rotary through your Club with your exemplary dedication, devotion, commitment and leadership qualities providing excellent stewardship in (11-12) for which my compliments! Once again an excellent issue for which my hats off to you and your editor Rtn. Shabir Shakir ! Congratulating you once again for the above excellent bulletin and for your most successful and rewarding year (11-12) and with warm personal regards you & Mr.Naushadji & Rotary greetings to all your members from myself and Indumati, we rmain, Your Friends, JAGMOHAN KATAKIA Cc to : Rtn Shabbir Shakir, Editor You have done a “fabulous job” through out the year. Mycompliments! Hi, There is always "Tauby or not to be" or" To be or not to be", we realize it only after the person has taken up the position, performed and left and in between the working , confidence and performance give us the reference to the capacity of a person but some outperform when they are given the responsibility. Hats off to Tauby. Your articles and editorial are really witty, specific and informative. -Mohammed Master Dear Shabbir, You did it again! Without going into "I had said so", "I knew it" etc., let me heartily congratulate you on a very successful year as the GO Editor. GO, this year, was exciting, colourful, pleasing, readable cover-to-cover, entertaining, informative et al. Glad to know that you continue as GO Editor for another year. A suggestion here. Let us freeze on the mast, colour scheme and design of the GO cover for 5 to 6 years and not change it every year. We will be able to build an exclusive identity of our club bulletin as is the case with hundreds of national weeklies/monthlies. A look which will identify our GO from afar and make us feel even prouder. All the best, -Rtn. Rajiv Behal

Hi Freedomanians, The results are out, and the rush is on for admissions…. some of you decided and some still deciding at the various options. Life carries on……….with sunny days and sometimes rainy days……… sometimes at a fast pace……and at other times it is so slow that time seems to have paused….. but the essence is that LIFE must go on. So also our year of togetherness has been a mixed one…….but it definitely has been the most educative one for me with all your phone calls and our discussions on varied subjects definitely kept up the interesting pace of life. One thing, dear friends always keep in mind is that Time is never constant. Circumstances in life will take out the different qualities and aspects to your personality……..some within your control and some beyond. But, try to be constant in your dealings with all for Time changes………..just like reading a novel…….. if one page is sad the other page will be happy. When a bird is alive it eats ants, But when a bird has died, the ants eat it. One tree can be made into a million matchsticks, But one matchstick is enough to burn a million trees. Circumstances can change any time ……. Do not devaluate or hurt anybody, You may be more powerful today But TIME is more powerful than you. This time let us get our brains racking on a lighter note: HOW COLOURFUL IS YOUR LIFE Every answer has a colour in it: 1) It happens on rare occasions, 2) An untruth, 3) A disreputable member of the family, 4) Everything grows if planted by people with these, 5) A photo impression of an architect's plan FILL IN THE BLANKS WITH THE NAMES OF SOAPS There was a boy. His name was………. He had a girlfriend whose name was …………….. The girl was wearing a ………… necklace. One day they met near a ………….. under a …………….. tree. The cold …………. was blowing and the …………………… was not too bright. There was a mixed fragrance of …………….. and ………….. The girl slipped and fell down. She was hurt. The boy applied …………….. The boy asked the girl how she was feeling and she replied ………….. They met a friend and drove off with him in his car no. ………………… HUMOUROUS THINKING What makes the Tower of Pisa lean? 1. Which is faster of the two …heat or cold? 2. By removing an eye has nothing left but a nose? 3. Why do people go to bed? 4. When is a door not a door? ANSWERS Once in a blue moon, White lie, Black sheep, Green thumb/fingers, Blue print NAMES OF SOAPS Lifebuoy, Neema/jasmine, Moti, Pond(s), Neem/sandal, Breeze, Sunlight, Jasmine/sandal/mogra, Dettol, Ok, 555 RIDDLES Because it does not eat, Heat…because you can catch a cold, Remove the letter I from NOISE, Because the bed cannot go to them, When it is ajar, So dear friends, I take leave of you (only on paper) but will as anxiously look forward to your calls and all the sharing we had. I thank many of you for sharing with me…which helped me to become a better person/parent and helped me to look at life from your perspective too. -Sangeeta Chhabra

REGULAR MEETINGS

IMAGE MANAGEMENT Dr. Prashant Agarwal, an agro-biotechnologist by profession, shared his thoughts on “How to manage your own Image?” at the Regular Meeting on Thursday, the 7th June 2012. What we see (and not that we hear or read) for the first time remains in our mind for a long time. We learn images first and the text later. For example, an infant makes its preferences of people only by their images created in its mind. Earlir we had a personal and a professional life. But in the last 15 years, the social life is taking a big slice of personal life. Here what others say about someone matters the most

and that in turn builds his/her own confidence. One's appearance always changes 'Perspectives' of others toward him. This very perspective is one's image for the world. It is decided by the way he dresses or he behaves. The speaker quoted examples of luminaries like the presidents of USA and India, Bill Gates of Microsoft Corporation, Amitabh Bachchan and why they hire services of an image consultant. First impression and image management always go hand in hand. In conclusion he said “It is essential to be able to create a powerful and desired first impression for success in

personal, professional and social life”. Kirit Joshi introduced the speaker and Sandeep Dhodapkar proposed a formal vote of thanks. -Sharad Bhave

“EURO CRISIS AND ITS EFFECT ON THE INDIAN ECONOMY” He came. He spoke ..and he left us all beaming w i t h confidence.”ALL IS WELL “as far as the Indian s c e n e i s concerned in the IT sector at least Mr. Rajiv Vaishnav ..We are not going to be much affected with the Euro Crisis ! That's the message Mr. Rajiv Vaishnav, Vice President NASSCOM from Mumbai, gave us at the “Coup De Grace “meeting held at the cool ambience of the VIA Hall . Speaking on the “Euro Crisis and its effect on

the Indian economy” Rajiv, a fabulous orator and responsible for many a IT Companies setting shop at Nagpur and one of the Champions for the SEZ at MIHAN, attributed this positive wave due to the “Jugadu” nature of Indians, who can realign ourselves to any crisis. Elaborating on the fact that the it Industry is not completely dependent on the Euro market but more on the USA, he elaborated on the various NASSCOM – McKinsey reports from 1998 to the recent ones which predicts through a lot of data every three years that the Indian software industry grew at a phenomenal rate from 4.8 bn $ to a whopping 60 bn $ as Indians have very efficiently optimised the “Problem Of Plenty” .. the massive manpower that we have. India

being one of the countries that will have 47m Working people by 2020 ! Talent in Abundance ! The need of the hour being Leadership through Innovation . NASSCOM categorises our Indian cities into 4 .. Leaders ( comprising of the 7 A cities- the metros); The CHALLENGERS (43 upcoming cities and NAGPUR being one of them), Followers and Aspirants.. So, dear Rotarians .. not only India but also our Orange City of Nagpur is poised for great things ahead ! Cheers ! Programe Chairperson Rtn. Kirit Joshi introduced the Rajiv and Rtn. PANEL DISCUSSION

The Panelists………..

……….and the Protagonist

The Thursday evening panel discussion on Amir Khan's programme 'Satyamev Jayate' wherein he exposed the corrupt doctors and the corruption in the medical field was the hot topic. And was it hot indeed ! Fabulously moderated by Rukshad Bhagwagar it was an eventful

District Awards at the Club!!!! discussion whether it was the panelists our the audience!! Rukshad managed to get under the skin of the 4 panelists Dr. Taori, Dr. Arti Anand, Sandip Dhorapkar & Dinesh Naidu. The topic being, are our doctors put on a pedestal, do our doctors take commission etc. The doctors on the panel felt that Amir Khan's

show was biased. Dinesh and Sandip were however of the opinion that our doctors are indeed mere commercial than human(e). All in all a very interesting & thought provoking evening where the doctors delighted and the Rotarians rocked with an awesome audience !! -Monica Bhagwagar

BUSINESS MEETING

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

A full house! The last and final Business meeting for the Rotary Year 2011-12, chaired by President Tauby Bhagwagar was held on Thursday,28th June. For the Board of 11-12, it was a proud moment -proud to have been led by the First Lady President and proud to have accomplished all that they had set out to achieve at the beginning of their term. It was a sentimental moment as well ! To witness the tumultous applause that 'their' President received and the genuine warmth that Past Presidents and members felt for her which was evident from the turn-out at Udyog Bhavan. The " moment of reckoning " that was most awaited for ,came well after the prelimnaries were done with. Yes , the President's Report for the Rotary Year 2011-2012 ! Beginning her Report on a passionate note, President Tauby saluted her Board for standing by her through thick and thin ; for having confidence in her ; for having laid their trust in her. " To lead a Club of this stature has been a priviledge of a life- time," she said. She reminded Rotarians of what she had said at the beginning of her Term. "I had spoken to you about the Power of One. That dedicated power , multiplied by 63 Committees into 321 Pictures on back page The last club assembly of the year 2011-2012 was held on the 20th of June 2012 in the Grand Millenium Hall, at Hotel Centrepoint. The first hour between 8.30 -9.30 am was devoted to a lavish buffet breakfast, after which President Tauby invited her Directors to give their reports about all the committees under them and projects carried out during the year. In a break from tradition, the chairpersons did not give individual reports. In another break from the tradition and in the interests of making the proceedings shorter

Club Staff Dinesh - He serves the Club well families, has made possible this Report, " she added . The Report presented was a thorough profile of the tasks carried out through the dedication of our members and the collosal responsibility she herself carried out while maintaining a cohesive atmosphere in the Club. The standing ovation which followed was well in place. The clapping which seemed unending showed true appreciation and admiration. A touching moment indeed ! Later, PDG Bobby expressing his gratefulness, said , Tauby added glory to the many-splendoured activities of our Club. PP Shiraz Gimi , said he was proud of himself to have proposed a member of Tauby's stature. THe earlier part of the meeting was of course just Fellowship. Rotarians, Anns, outgoing Board , incoming Team flocked for snacks laid out generously by President Tauby. It was a happy mix of greetings and banter as everyone was 'happy ' to be there for "their Lady President ".Members then proceeded to the Meeting Hall . For once the Hall was occupied well before 6.30 p.m.As the hands of the clock got together, the meeting was called to Order. After half-a-minute silent prayer, Secretary

The last fellowship of the year is 'The Ladies Nite', and rightly so.... Save the best for the last. It's one day where the men are supposed to pamper, entertain, serenade and basically even make fools of themselves. Well... Some men did succeed in doing all that. The venue was decked in red and black and so were all the rotarians, anns, anna's and kiddo's. The entertainment was in the form of games where the men had to participate and the women either clapped or booed them. The funniest part of the evening was when the guys had to do a belly dance ( most of them did have huge bellies so it was literally a belly dance). The band for the evening was fantastic and played popular numbers which got everyone on to the dance floor. Old and young everyone enjoyed shaking a leg. President Tauby celebrated a successful year by cutting a cake. Our club won many awards at the district level and that of course was not any surprise to any one of us. It was an evening which was relaxing and entertaining.... While the dancing went on into the wee hours. Kudos to chairpersons Behram Patel, Anita Chitaley and Monica Bhagwagar. -Madhavi Naidu

TRAVEL LOG A city of dreams. A city of opportunity. A city of color. A city of night. A city of debauchery. And a city of human owls! It's difficult to find a person who does not know where and what Las Vegas is! At least the urban world does. What they don't know is the concept and magnitude of Vegas! People who have not visited Vegas, have only heard interesting stories about this magnificent city. Nothing prepares you for the impact this city has, when you actually set foot on its soil. This city has been created in the desert state of Nevada, in the United States of America. The story goes, that the entire concept of building this city out of no where, was a concept of a few mafia lords who wanted to earn money out of gambling. The city slowly took shape in the form of Theme city. That means, some brilliant concepts later, a city was erected with theme hotels whose prime target was to build casinos, where people could while away the night, gambling. Each hotel in Vegas is a theme hotel. For example, the hotels are named Venetian, New York New York, MGM, Caesars Palace etc. As the name suggests, so is the interiors. Venetian is a replica of Venice, New York is that of New York City, MGM is like the MGM studio, so on and so forth. Each hotel is self sufficient and is a city in itself. A person staying at any of this hotel need not step out for want of anything. Ground floor normally has casinos, which runs the entire length and breadth of the hotel; eateries are a dime a dozen, adult shows, comic shows, cabarets, concerts! Phew! You name it, and its there. The idea is to overwhelm you so much with everything under one roof that you don't feel the need to step out. So what's the other thing you do? Yes! You

16

LAS VEGAS spend money on all the things provided by way of entertainment and make the owners richer in the bargain. Vegas hotels are expensive during week ends and cheaper during the week days. Since the entire purpose is debauchery, it's better to save on week day tariff and spend it on site seeing. Yes, don't be surprised. There is enough to see too. Start walking! Since most of the hotels are one after the other and some even interconnected, it's a visual treat to see all the theme hotels. One marvels at the way each hotel has been created to replicate what its name stands for. The entire city comes to life at night. The neon signs are dazzling and the streets look like a burst of color of every type possible. Each neon sign is an invitation to experience something spectacular and new. We had the opportunity of seeing Celine Dion's live performance at Caesar's Palace. It was an experience of a life time. Similarly, a lot of world class singers, comedians, dancers etc have contracts to perform at certain hotels. Tickets are available for whatever takes your fancy. Since there is so much to do during the night, it's a great idea to go for a tour of the Grand Canyon by a chopper, during the day. The chopper takes you down right in the middle of the Canyon after circling a major part, and stops down below. There the tour operators provide you with a lunch sitting in the midst of the Grand Canyon. Can anything be more magnificent? A visit to the singing fountains, in front of hotel Ballagio, is a must. The fountain comes to life around 7pm and a lot of crowd gathers around it in rapt attention. Hotel Venetian is worth a visit too. The entire hotel looks like Venice, complete with a canal flowing through the hotel, with Gondolas being rowed by

handsome Gondoliers! Another very attractive aspect of this city is its leniency towards matrimony!! There are numerous little chapels dotting the city, for instant marriages. The state law allows you to come to its land and tie the knot. In any other place, there is a stipulated waiting time for a registered or a church wedding. Nevada allows you to get married without any prior notice, just like 2 min noodles! Lot of runaway couples young and old, who cannot wait to tie the knot or because of a whim, avail this opportunity. And the icing on the cake is: there is instant annulment and divorce too. So, if you decide to marry in the morning and by afternoon, if you feel you are not meant for each other, no worries! Go back in there and get rid of each other! Legally. Well, lots can be written about Vegas. Best is to find out for yourself! -Amita Behal

DRIVING THE OLD HINDUSTAN TIBET ROAD... THE ROAD WHERE HISTORY SPEAKS !! One of the deadliest roads in the world. IT was the India of the mid-1800s, and Lord Dalhousie had been appointed as GovernorGeneral of India. He introduces India to its first railway, lays out its first telegraph line, establishes its postal system and starts the Public Works Department. Amidst all this reformation, he anoints Simla as the Summer Capital of the East India Company. Not much later, thwarted by climate-induced ill-health, he is forced to move camp to Chini (the present-day Kalpa in Kinnaur) upstream of the Sutlej. Its strategic location in the then princely state of Bushahr, on an offshoot of the ancient Silk Route widely used by traders from Central Asia and China, does not escape him. Soon after, he orders the construction of the ambitious Hindustan-Tibet Road through a region dubbed by awestruck 19th century travellers as the Valley of the Shadow of Death.. "Surely the Gods live here!" goes an ancient saying ,..."This is no place for men to travese!"' It was Lord Dalhousie's visits to Bushahr that led to the re-examining of possible commercial routes as envisaged during the Gurkha wars. Through the treaty of 1815, the hill states had bound themselves to constructing roads within their territories when called upon by the colonial government. Following the ceding of free land by the states of Patiala, Baghat and Keonthal, the first lap of the Hindustan-Tibet Road from Kalka to Shimla commenced in the year 1849. Soon after, hunting and sightseeing trips along this road became the main attractions of the Shimla season, but the Governor General found the hill station over-rated. Terming it 'merely a suitable eyrie from which to watch the newly annexed plains that stretch below', he preferred instead to conduct his official duties out of Chini(now Kalpa). The dry weather, and possibly, the unmatched view of

the Kinner Kailash bathed in moonlight, placed him a mere forty-six mail hours, or four marching days away from the Summer Capital. In a private communication to a friend, Lord Dalhousie dreamily shared, "I returned to Simla by the new road, which I commenced one year ago, and which when it shall be finished will not be surpassed, I flatter myself, by any mountain road in the world". In practice, regrettably, he could not convince the Board of Control in London, already reeling from the Punjab conquest, about the low cost of construction, despite pressing forced labour into use. So ,while the Cart Road between Kalka and Shimla was completed by the 1860s, the road beyond Shimla would remain a small cut bridle path, never more that 7 to 8 feet in width. It would zigzag through Theog, Narkanda and Kotgarh to Rampur, across the Wangtu Bridge to culminate at Chini. Not much it seems has changed for 21stcentury Kinnaur. Tucked away in the northeastern edge of Himachal Pradesh, rubbing shoulders with Tibet, this high-altitude Himalayan district faces splendid isolation in the heartless winter. Despite the erosion of geographical seclusion (as a direct consequence of the historic Great Road, today, motorable and known to us as the National Highway 22), Kinnaur still is rated an idyllic picture of life above 12,000 feet. Shattered every now and then by the maninduced wrath of nature. Crisscrossed by the formidable, albeit magnificent, Zanskar, Dhauladhar and Greater Himalaya ranges, Kinnaur is bestowed with innumerable peaks, valleys, glaciers and deep gorges carved out by the Sutlej and its tributaries. The capricious Sutlej announces its thunderous presence in India a short distance from Shipki, the last village on the Tibetan side, before lashing through to the plains of Punjab. Snaking along, above, and across this

TRAVEL LOG redoubtable river are the many treacherous roads taken by traders, surveyors and travellers of yore; ferrying goats, wool, borax, spices, opium and espionage between Rampur on the left bank of the Sutlej, and the tent-city of Garu in China. Today, a newer, broader NH22 has replaced the bridle path; essentially following the same route Lord Dalhousie conceived off till Wangtu. Here on the highway meanders along the left bank of the Sutlej towards neighbouring Spiti. At Khab (confluence of the Sutlej and Spiti rivers), an off-shoot ascends to Namgea, a couple of hours run from Shipki Pass and the India-Tibet border beyond. This new alignment of the highway has however placed Chini( Kalpa) on an ancillary road through Rekong Peo, Kinnaur's modern-day capital. Construction and plying of heavy trucks over the years, frequent land slides, low maintaince has resulted in deplorable road conditions. A section of the NH22 was featured in the History Channel's Deadliest Roads series for its hazardous driving conditions proving emphatically, that the more things change, the more they stay the same. Even a 150 years apart. "Surely the Gods live here!" was the ancient saying . "This was no place for ordinary men to traverse!"'. The Valley of the Shadow of Death.. but here we will undertake our journey , with respect for the Road and with the spirit of adventure in our hearts. -Naushad Bhagwagar (IPP Tauby & the family take this much deserved holiday. Leaving Nagpur on the 8th of July Naushad Tauby Cherag & Arman will be driving via Chandigarh through these ancient mountain roads upto the Tibet border & then north up till the Lahul Spiti ranges in their Toyota Fortuner)

God has strange moods. He gives brains to one, beauty to another, rags to one, riches to another, unhappiness to another. When he made Dr. Indrajeet Mulik, he must have been in a good mood, because he gave him almost very thing A+ - Brains, beauty, riches and happiness. A thorough Nagpurkar, Dr. Indrajeet Mulik is the son of Arch. Gopal Rao & Dr. Mangla Mulik. He is the 2nd of three siblings, one being Gauri Malji W/O Monal Malji (our in-house heartthrob a.k.a. Hrithik Roshan) and a younger brother Abhijeet who is a pharmacist. Architect Gopal Rao worked for N.I.T. and was involved in new town planning of city of Nagpur as we see it today. Dr. Mangla Mulik is gynecologist (now retired). After completing his school at S.F.S., Dr. Mulik did his graduation from G.M.C. Nagpur and post – graduation form I.G.M.C. Nagpur, he also did his B.A. while doing his MBBS and went on to do his D.N.B. (Diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners). Though a doctor he was more inclined towards civil services, in fact he appeared for his I.A.S. exams while preparing for a Mansarovar – Amarnath Yatra – talk of multitasking! I am not even going to talk of his other achievements because it will take up this whole page and become a C.V., the interview can take a walk! Before giving me an interview, he had just seen his sister-in-law and her husband who were returning to the states, delivered a baby and was preparing for his trip the next morning to Turkey for an international conference! Behind every man there is a great woman (notice the absence of the word 'great' before 'man'. You have to excuse my feminist bias). This really holds good for Dr. Jayashree Mulik, wife of yours truly. Petite and beautiful, why is she wasting time between swabs and scrubs when she could be sashaying down the ramp, enjoying herself and the adulation she could have got! But no, this graceful young lady from Kolhapur is a full time associate professor at G.M.C. Nagpur. She did her MBBS, M.D. and D.N.B. all from G.M.C. Miraj. She is also the youngest of three siblings – Nandini Babulkar the eldest sister & Dr. Sunetra Chaterjee who stays in the U.S. though her father was in politics he insisted on a high level of education for his daughters as it made them mentally and financially independent. MISSION RWANDA - A GREAT PROJECT CONCEIVED BY PRIP RAJA SABOO Civil war that killed close to a million people, mass exodus of nearly two million refugees to the neighboring Zaire, now the Democratic Republic of Congo – these were the images that haunted the minds of everyone of the medical team when they were about to touch down at the airport in Kigali, capital of Rwanda on Sunday, April 22, 2012 after a 13-hour flight from New Delhi via Doha and Entebbe. With the 27-member team consisting of 16 medical specialists lead by PDG Dr. R.S.Parmar and 11 Rotary volunteers lead by DG Manpreet Singh Gandhok, RI District 3080, India had arrived 770 kilograms of medical supplies including medicines and orthopedic and other equipment costing approximately US$ 20,000. Republic of Rwanda with a population of 13.6 million is a small country in east central Africa, just south of the equator, the most densely populated African nation today. For many medical procedures Rwandans have to go either to Uganda or Europe. The 27-member team was received at Kigali Airport by Assistant Governor Ndoba Mugunga, responsible for Rwanda and Burundi of District 9150, PDG John Nyombayire and other local Rotarians.

The Reach out to Africa programme was an extension of the idea of serving beyond the borders conceived by PRIP Raja Saboo nearly 13 years ago when the first such team went to Uganda. Since then similar missions have been to Ethiopia, Nigeria, Malawi, Swaziland, Lesotho, Madagascar, Republic of Congo and Zambia from India as Matching Grant projects of the Rotary Foundation in collaboration with Rotary Districts and clubs from all around the world. The 12-day programme was the culmination of several months of preparation and planning between the project coordinator PDG Ranjit Bhatia from 3080, DG FredTatukila District 9150 and Dr.Theobald Hategekimana, Director General of University Teaching Hospital of Kigalil where the Surgeons would perform the surgeries on the pre-identified patients. 210 procedures undertaken included removal of a bladder tumor and urethroplasty, facial reconstruction of a genocide survivor who was struck on the face with a machete, pharyngectomy, laparoscopic cholecystectomy, hip replacements, hysterectomy and many other complicated interventions. The surgeons were assisted by a team of three anesthetists who accompanied them from

CRICKET AS A COMMODITY! - GADDIGUDAM GOONDAS During 'our' days – 1930s and 1950s – Cricket meant festival matches of five days with two innings for each team! Unless the match was decided by a win, with all the wickets down, the match was considered a draw. The matches were played generally from November to February in India. (Nowadays, the matches are played all the year round!) Thereafter the matches were in England during summer. And at other times in Australia, New Zealand and West Indies. The teams were India, MCC (England), South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Later, the formidable West Indies, Sri Lanka and Pakistan entered the arena. During the British regime in India, they encouraged Cricket with a communal angle, in pursuance of their 'Divide and Rule' policy! Thus, there used to Quadrangulars of matches with Hindus, Muslims, Parsis and Christians as playing teams. In Bombay they had Pentangulars with Europeans as the additional team. These tournaments were abolished after Independence. The great C.K.Nayudu, who lived in our mohalla, (in Nagpur), with his brother C.S.Nayudu, Mushtaq Ali, Ghasu Gaikwad, C.T.Sarwate, made a great combination and made us proud of these cricket icons. India. At the valedictory function on April 28, Health Minister of Rwanda Dr. Agnes said, "On behalf of the families whose lives you have touched, let me say a big thank you. We would look forward to your continued assistance in similar missions in the near future". Raja in his response has promised to undertake free heart surgeries of 15 Rwandan children in Chandigarh free of any charge. The Government of Rwanda would fund their air travel whereas their surgical procedures in India including their stay arrangements would be the responsibility of local Rotarians. A mission involving 20 plastic surgeons and a mega medical camp of 10 days to handle 400 cases of plastic surgeries and orthopedic procedures on survivors of the genocide is the next dream project of PRIP Raja Saboo. This was service above self at its quintessential best, said one of the volunteers on his return to Chandigarh. -PDG Vishwas Sahasrabhojanee

BOBBY'S BUBBLES

the wise decisions of the civic authorities in Nagpur was to name the northern corner of VCA grounds as C.K.Nayudu Road with a bust of the great cricketer at the spot in traffic island where the ball fell when CK hit a glorious Six! In fact, CK used to 'play to the galleries' and if the crowd shouted 'Sixer Kankaiyya' and CK would invariably oblige! CK later moved to greener pastures to Indore at the invitation of Maharajah Holkar. Cricket was considered a Gentleman's Game. 'Playing Cricket' meant being honest and fair! To my mind Cricket is not exactly the same now. For example, Lasith Malinga, the yellow haired Sri Lankan bowler, I think chucks the ball. My brother Rajagopal, who considers himself as a Cricket expert, 'exonerates' Lasith saying according to rules it is OK! It may also be mentioned that Cricket Associations and BCCI used to appropriate the gate money and profits, giving the players a pittance called 'smoke money!' Some of the players had to pay for their own travel! It must said to the credit of the great Sunil Gavaskar and Cricket administrator Barrister S.K.Wankhede (former State finance minister), who strove and succeeded in getting for the players and teams a fair share

of the profits earned. There are now several teams in what is called IPL (India Premier League) like Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Daredevils, Deccan Charger, Pune Warriors, Punjab Kings, Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings. Also, I believe these teams can be 'purchased' i.e, the team and the player can be sponsored for a price, the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India), the richest sports organization in the world granting franchise to teams and players. The teams and players are then franchisees. It is something like the BCCI acting as a licensing authority and the participants pay a toll to make the Board richer all the way! Remember the grant of Indulgences by the Pope to the Faithful! The misuse of Indulgences for making money was one of the reasons that brought about the Reformation! With these parameters I wish to sponsor my Cricket team to be called Gaddigudam Goondas! (Gaddigudam is sort of lowbrow locality of Nagpur!) -By Bobby Srinivas

X-FACTOR We have to take risks. We can only truly understand the miracle of life when we let the unexpected manifest itself. Every day – together with the sun – God gives us a moment in which it is possible to change everything that makes us unhappy. Every day we try to pretend that we don't realize that moment, that it doesn't exist, that today is just the same as yesterday and will be the same as tomorrow. But if you pay attention, you can discover the magic instant. It may be hiding at the moment when we put the key in the door in the morning, in the silence right after dinner, in the thousand and one things that all seem the same to us. This moment exists – a moment when all the strength of the stars passes through us and lets us work miracles. Happiness is at times a blessing – but usually it's a conquest. The magic instant helps us to change, drives us forward to seek our dreams. We shall suffer and go through quite a few difficult moments and face many a disappointment – but this is all transitory and

SHIRAZSPEAK FRIENDS : Never ask for food. BAWAJI FRIENDS: Always bring the food. FRIENDS: Will Say 'hello' BAWAJI FRIENDS: Will give you a big hug and a kiss and say “Oh Behen ***, Kahaan chay re tu? THE MAGIC INSTANT inevitable, and eventually we shall feel proud of the marks left behind by the obstacles. In the future we will be able to look back with pride and faith. Poor are those who are afraid of running risks. Because maybe they are never disappointed, never disillusioned, never suffer like those who have a dream to pursue. But when they look back – for we always look back – they will hear their heart saying: “What did you do with the miracles that God sowed for your days? What did you do with the talent that your Master entrusted to you? You buried it deep in a grave because you were afraid to lose it. So this is your inheritance: the certainty that you have wasted your life.” Poor are those who hear these words. For then they will believe in miracles, but the magic instants of life will have already passed. We must listen to the child that we once were, and who still lives within us. This child understands about magic instants. We can muffle his sobbing, but we can't hush his voice. If we aren't reborn, if we don't see life again

with the innocence and enthusiasm of childhood, then there is no more sense to living. There are many ways to commit suicide. Those who try to kill their body offend God's law. Those who try to kill their soul also offend God's law, although their crime is less visible to the eyes of man. Let us be heedful of what the child within us has to say. Let's not feel ashamed of it. Let's not allow it to feel afraid, because it's lonely and is scarcely ever heard. Let's allow the child within us to take the reins of our existence a little. This child says that one day is different from another. Let's make the child feel loved again. Let's please this child – even if it means acting in a way that we're not used to, even if it seems foolish in the eyes of others. Remember that the wisdom of men is madness before God. If we listen to the child we bear in our soul, our eyes will shine once more. If we don't lose contact with this child, we won't lose contact with life. Let's live all the magic instants ! -Deepa Kale

How to Get Rid of ADWARE and SPYWARE Infections from Your Computer A virus is just one type of intrusion that computer users must guard against today. "Malware" also takes the form of "spyware" and "adware". Does your computer run much slower than when it was new? Does your computer's monitor fill up with pop-up windows containing advertisements for diet pills, sex aids and lots of other junk? How about changes to your browser settings so your home page changes and will not change back? If you are experiencing one or more of these symptoms, then your computer has probably been infected with malware. Malware is a term computer security experts use to refer to all forms of malicious software. Just like viruses, you do not intentionally download spyware and adware programs to your computer and you do not deliberately open them. They install when you visit websites or when you download and install other software products. WHAT ABOUT REMOVING MALWARE? Spyware and adware programs are less difficult to remove. Unlike legitimate programs, these malware programs do not appear in the list of installed programs in the Windows Add/Remove Programs section of the Control Panel. You need special help in removing these malware infections. Spyware is software that performs certain tasks on your computer without your consent. Adware is any software that automatically displays advertising material stored on your hard drive or uses your Internet connection to download advertising materials to your computer. HOW TO PROTECT AGAINST SPYWARE AND ADWARE Finding and removing adware and spyware infections requires special programs. Download and install one of the safe products mentioned below. You can use more than one. Unlike antivirus software, running more than one anti-spyware or antiadware solution is not likely to cause conflicts on your computer. Be extra careful with software (especially banner ads) that tell you your system is infected and you need to install "XYZ" to fix the problem - while "diagnose for free, cure for a fee" is the model used by some perfectly legitimate (and well-reviewed) anti-spyware software publishers, it can also be a ploy to get you to install spyware on your system. FREE SAFE SOLUTIONS One excellent source of spyware detection and removal is a toolbar provided by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) or an Internet Web portal such as Yahoo.com. These providers offer toolbars, a special web browser add-on that adds more search options and other features. Some of these toolbars now include a web-based detection and removal program. AD-AWARE SE PERSONAL is well-known for performing comprehension checks for malware components and is very successful in removing them. It has several options for configuring how you use it. SPYBOT-S&D performs very comprehensive search and destroy scans of your computer. It is very user friendly. You can select the types of files that you want to leave on your computer, such as cookies, which are often identified as "spyware components", even though they are how your personalization settings are remembered for your favorite websites, among other things. Spybot S&D also can be set to immunize areas of the hard drive that are prone to infection from malware. For best results, run both of these programs on alternating days. Run the web-based scans from the browser's tool bar during computing sessions. -Sohrab Kanga

NO QUIZ THIS TIME AS IT IS THE LAST ISSUE. SO JUST A FUNNY LESSON ON ENGLISH FOR YOU... ENJOY READING IT. A composition by a confused Englishman We'll begin with a box, and the plural is boxes, But the plural of ox becomes oxen, not oxes. One fowl is a goose, but two are called geese, Yet the plural of moose should never be meese. You may find alone mouse or a nest full of mice, Yet the plural of house is houses, not hice. If the plural of man is always called men, Why shouldn't the plural of pan be called pen ? If I speak of my foot and show you my feet, And I give you a boot, would a pair be called beet ? If one is a tooth and a whole set are teeth, Why shouldn't the plural of booth be called beeth ? Then one may be that, and three would be those, Yet hat in the plural would never be hose, And the plural of cat is cats, not cose. We speak of a brother and also of brethren, But though we say mother, we never say methren. Then the masculine pronouns are he, his and him, But imagine the feminine: she, shis and shim ! Let's face it - English is a crazy language. There is no egg in eggplant nor ham in hamburger; Neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins weren't invented in England. We take English for granted, but if we explore its paradoxes, We find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square, And a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig. And why is it that writers write, but fingers don't fing, Grocers don't groce and hammers don't ham ? Doesn't it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend ? If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them, What do you call it ? If teachers taught, why didn't preachers praught ? If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat ? Sometimes I think all the folks who grew up speaking English, should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane. In what other language do people recite at a play and play at a recital ? We ship by truck but send cargo by ship ... We have noses that run and feet that smell. We park in a driveway and drive in a parkway. And how can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, While a wise man and a wise guy are opposites ? You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language In which your house can burn up as it burns down, In which you fill in a form by filling it out, And in which an alarm goes off by going on. And in closing .......... If Father is Pop, how come Mother's not Mop ? ? ? ? I don't SUFFER from INSANITY... I ENJOY every moment of it !

PROJECT SMILING FACES

SCHOLARSHIPS

Chairperson Rajiv addresses the students On a bright sunny morning on 27th June 2012, the Scholarships Committee, at an impressive function organised by St.Ursula Girls' High School, gave the academic careers of 151 deserving, but needy students of the school a boost by presenting a cheque of Rs.3.75 lakhs to the Principal, Rtn.Rachna Singh, under PROJECT SMILING FACES. President Tauby Bhagwagar spoke on the occasion and exhorted the students to progress in studies and continue their dedication towards academic progress.
