“ This victory alone is not the change we seek. It is only the chance for us to make that change. It can't happen without you, without a new spirit of sevice, a new spirit of sacrifice. So let us summon a new spirit of responsibility, where each of us resolves to pitch in and work harder and look after not only ourselves but each other”. These encouraging words of Barack Obama, are so relevant to each of us. The great thing about our club is that it provides you the opportunity to reach out to others who need us. The more involved we become, the more of a difference Rotary makes to each of us. Friendship was the foundation rock on which Rotary was built and tolerance is the element which holds it together. We should work towards making a forum before which vital economic and social problems may be fairly and intelligently discussed. Club programs should stimulate thought, widen the horizon, and deepen conviction.Without goodwill no system can succeed, with it even an imperfect one can scarcely fail! Editor Nilufer Rana

Every year we welcome friendly Lord Ganapati to our homes for ten days and on the tenth day we bid audien, with" Ganapati Bappa Moriya! Pudhchia Warshi Lauker Ya". Most of the time, the immersion is in rivers, lakes and other water bodies. In the past decades, the idols were made of clay, however, with the advent of new materials like POP, cement, paper etc, the idol does not dissolve completely in water. Adding to the problem is flowers and other puja articles . Our Club has been making a sincere effort for more then a decade to create awareness and reduce pollution . This year again we started planning our activities much in advance. We carried out our activities for two days i.e 4th and 5th September. On 4th, we took out Nirmalya Rath, which covered the area of Jaripatka, Dharampeth, Hill Top and Shankar Nagar. Nirmalya was collected from more then 100 padals. There was a welcome change in the attitude of people, as they not only happily handed over nirmalya to us but also offered prasad and appreciated the efforts taken by us. Rotractors from Hislop College, Tuli College and Ambedkar College were there in large numbers to help us . Rtn Deepa Jamwal, Sonia Khurana, Anjuli Minocha, Shweta Singh, Chetna Singhal , Parag Date and Namita Sharma took part in this activity. Cyrus Watchmaker coordinated the entire activity efficiently. RJ Rajan from FM 94.3 spoke to us live on that day. On 5th we started out activity at 1 pm. Rtn Shilpi Bagdi extended a helping hand and offered her resturant and staff of Lake View Grill at Telankhadi lake. There were lots of activities going around at the same time. gives her colleagues in rotary for grooming her to where she is today!! What strikes one about Shilpa is her down to earth attitude and her transparency to give credit to all who helped her. She is now an official guide and trainer for beauty pageants passing on the the encouragement hat she had once received. Shilpa you have come a long way and are a source of inspiration for those who can believe that sheer hard work and dedication can change your life!!! Once again all our best wishes always. Continuing with the meeting, here was another example of determination. Parag Paranjape, Shiv Rao and Sachin Paliwal had set their hearts and mind to take on one of the toughest marathons. When one has passion to do something nothing is great a feat. This trio was part of the Manali - Leh expedition by bicycles. The terrain was rough and very tough. It was a distance of 474 kms. which they covered in 13 hours and 30 minutes. The climate was cold and the oxygen was low but the will was strong. The terrain was bumpy to say the least but the scenic beauty more than made up for it, so much so that they said even a tiring day would be pushed back just looking at natures beauty. It's a test of endurance but once our minds are made up nothing is impossible. Congratulations to all of you and maybe you think of climbing the Himalayas one day!!! Anita Chitaley

But life had something even bigger and better in store for her!! Meet Shilpa Agrawal, a person whose destiny has taken her to international recognition. Introduced by Neeta Singh, it was not just destiny that changed her life 360 degrees but faith in herself coupled with hard work and determination. Right now Shilpa is basking in the glory of her newest title as Mrs. Universe Lovely. This award is one among her list of awards she has won in various pageants. Her career took off by managing their furniture manufacturing unit. for this she received an award for best industrialist. Shilpas winning streak would not have been successful if it was not for the unstinting support of her husband Akash. Not only was he a supporting husband but her trainer and guide as well. Shilpa was managing her roles as wife, businesswoman and mother with great ease! Rotary, Shilpa says was her source of confidence and encouragement. With tears which were uncontrollable, she

NO HONKING N SAY NO TO PLASTIC Civic Awareness is a new committee and is the brain child of our dynamic President Rina Sinha. Tribute to Yogi

OCTOBER 2017 GOLDEN ORANGE

It's being without YOGI… That we will NEVER get used to… (A tribute to Rtr. Bhawerlal Sharma, President, Rotaract Club of Hislop College and Zonal Rotaract Representative, Nagpur Zone, RID-3030) I remember that day very distinctively when I met Bhawerlal Sharma three years back. It was some event in the college and I was coordinating with the student volunteers. A volunteer came up to me to ask how he can help me. I saw him, 6ft. tall, strong built but a smiling and a pleasant face. I asked him his name and he told me, “Madam mera naam Bhawerlal Sharma hai par sab mujhe Yogi bolte hain”. I thought Yogi was easy to remember and call, so 'Yogi' became the name called out repeatedly by all the teachers and students all through the event for his support and help. This is how Yogi became the integral part of Hislop Family. With every project or event Yogi gained confidence & trust of one and all. Yogi became the Mr. Dependable of our team. Days, months and years passed by and his introvert guy, who would shy to talk to people became the Secretary of Rotaract club of Hislop College. I was pleasantly surprised to see him grow as a person as a friend and a wonderful Human

Being. He once came upto me and said, “Maam mujhe cultural programme mein dance karna hai.” Another surprise for me, I was doubtful about his heavy built and dancing. Still I never wanted to dishearten him by refusing him of this opportunity. I thought he will give up on his own when he realizes that dance was not his cup of tea. But I was wrong, Yogi proved himself yet again. Dedicated about the practice timings, he balanced his classes, Rotaract projects & his rehearsals. A caring team member who was concerned about the comfort of each and every person associated with him. Every passing day unfolded the hidden qualities in his personality. He was so enthusiastic & excited for everything as though he was here to achieve something. He regularly came up with ideas for projects. He believed in Executing and not merely planning. I always told him to slow down as he always wanted to do something big, something different…During his tenure as a wonderful & successful Secretary, he was awarded with the Best Rotaractor trophy for his contribution by the Rotary Club of Nagpur. It was then unanimously decided to make him the President. The moment it was declared, he started planning for all the events that he with his team would take up. After discussing about his vision for the club, I was impressed yet concerned about the speed & magnitude of his project's lineup. I had to refuse him for some projects and he went on trying to convince me for the same. Yogi, the Young, Dynamic, Committed, Kind Hearted, Composed and Soft Spoken Person lived his life to the fullest, touched many lives and unexpectedly left us all shattered on this Teacher's Day. We will always cherish the personalized gift from him, which he had bought in advance for this Teacher's Day and were given to us by the saddened Rotaractors on the very next day. A day I will never forget in my lifetime… The most difficult part is to believe that we will never see him. He was a great Human Being who left us at a loss. And now we are left with his Memories & his Smile………. Dr. Jigisha Naidu, Teacher-In-Charge, Rotaract Club of Hislop College

OCTOBER 2017 GOLDEN ORANGE

Enjoying the benefits of dual membership in Rotary, Rotaract By Petar Pešic, a member of the Rotary Club of Nis, Serbia Driven by a desire to help my local community, I discovered Rotaract when I was attending the Faculty of Law at the University of Niš, Serbia. In the Rotaract Club of Nis, I met a number of young people who, like me, shared an interest in improving our community. It made our actions easier that we all shared the same goal, and we took part in many projects that made us visible in the community. Belonging to Rotaract basically gives you free access to great mentors in your host Rotary club. They are always there to point you in the right direction and assist you in discovering better ways of doing things. I did not know it at the time, but every project I was a part of and every meeting and event I organized helped me for my professional work as a lawyer. By working on service projects, I learned much about correspondence, negotiations, and drafting documents, all things I now do on a daily basis. Wherever I went, whether Berlin, London, or Split, Croatia, I had somebody to call, someone local to meet, or to show me around. Our network is as diverse and global as it possibly gets. For me, life without traveling is meaningless. In addition, I love to travel. For me, life without traveling is meaningless. Rotaract gave me so many opportunities to travel

22

around the world, taking part in service projects, and meeting interesting people. In fact, it was memories of all my great travels with Rotaract that compelled me to seek out and join the Rotary Club of Nis, Serbia, when I learned about the new rule changes that allow Rotaractors to also become members of Rotary at the same time. Both Rotaract and Rotary have given me so much. In Rotary, I meet people who have more experience in life than I. Being in their company even for a few minutes a week allows me to hear from their different perspectives. I am learning to embrace diversity. That is the “school of life,” as I like to call it, that you get in Rotary. Also, because Rotary members generally have access to greater resources, everything in Rotary is bigger. Projects involve more people and have a deeper impact on society. That is why I am excited to step up and expand on what I have learned in Rotaract as a member of my Rotary club. I have just completed serving as my district's Rotaract representative covering Serbia and Montenegro. At the age of 25, and now a Rotarian, I am looking forward to meeting new people across the globe, organizing new projects and spreading the idea of “Service Above Self.” Throughout Membership and New Club Development month, we will be featuring blog posts that focus on club flexibility. From a hybrid club to dual membership, these posts feature clubs who have benefited greatly from restructuring or implementing new membership options. Shabbir Shakir

Fair Futures “Stuart Morrow- A true hero who missed making history” History might have been different if the Belfast Club Board of Directors would have agreed to admit women as members in 1912! Stuart Morrow a lawyer and member from the San Francisco Club shifted to Ireland in 1911 and started four clubs, in Dublin, in Belfast, Manchester and London. In the first year of 1912 the Board of Directors of Belfast Club discussed the possibility of granting membershipto women and clearly the Board considered it undesirable. It is said that, 'Had the Belfast Club admitted women in the summer of 1912, Rotary might have changed its policy when Dublin and Belfast were admitted and the U.S Supreme Court would never have had to render a decision in 1987!'. Stuart was a law graduate and a gold medallist from Trinity College, Dublin. Towards the end of 1885, Stuart Morrow migrated to California and by 1909 he joined the Rotary Club of San Francisco and shifted back in 1911. After he formed four clubs in 1911 he next two clubs were Glasgow and Edinburgh in 1912, and in the following year it was Liverpool and Birmingham, making two in Ireland and two in Scotland and finally two in England! He worked with such amazingly great speed and passion. He also had the vision and open mindedness

to see women as equal members contributing to the cause of Rotary. He must have tried hard to convince the 'thick headed men' but failed. Imagine if he had been successful in convincing his Belfast Board in admitting women as members in 1912 what sort of a history Rotary would have had! It's a lost opportunity not only for the women but also for the Clubs worldwide and the Rotary movement itself. For it was not for another 80 years after the founding of Belfast that ladies were finally elected to membership in the Club. Today approximately only 20 percent Rotarians are women. The latest generation might have a tendency to think that 'it was always like that'. But no, the facts are just the reverse. Most of us are unaware of the long history of the debate of admission of women to the Rotary fold- nearly for eight decades! Many Clubs around the world attempted to include women as members but were naturally unsuccessful. At some Clubs' male members even threatened to quit if women were allowed entry! This is called gender bias at its best . Rita Agrawal

Well, the time has again come to leave the 'sometimes wet, sometimes dry, oft times muggy '-- climes of good old Nags, and head towards Croatia (Kings Landing, here we come! ) , followed by a quick peck on the cheek to Aapro London. Holidays are always fun, but home is where the heart is ,at the end of the day. Like, you cant beat good old Bharat ,for the endless entertainment coupled with shock and awe -that our fearless leaders have lined up for our swatch well being , right? The thrill of waking up to the news that we are going to get a Bullet train!! Hats off to the promoters of Swatch Bharat! What a novel way of stopping people from answering nature's call, on the tracks! I mean , you'd have to be an Olympian to be able to hop on/off and do the dirty, within that slim window of opportunity between the train exiting mumbai, and entering Ahmedabad. Or vice-versa. And down under...Keeping the' South of the Vindhyas' on every news channel are those stalwarts,Rajnikant and Kamalahaasan , who are planning to unite and give serious challenge to O. Paneeraselvam, and Shashikala, and anyone else who tries to lay claim to Amma's throne. Win or lose, they should at the very least get a good script out of it for their next Blockbuster...

By the way, yesterday I saw my very first New 50 rupee note!! It was green/blue and most attractive. The Paki's are really going to have to get their act together now ,if they want to de-stabilise us with counterfeit notes...Hey we are wayy ahead of you.. Barely had you gone into autopilot with the printing of old money, De-monetisation happened. Millions of fake notes..wasted, tsk tsk. Listen, WE Invented 'Who moved my cheese.' Not the Book, dummy, the real thing. You swung into counterfeit action with the 2000rs. notes, we used a leaky pink dye that came off onto your hands, hehehe. Now, as you gear up to copy our new 50 rs. notes, guess what? We're going back to coins!!!! Oof , we Indians are tooo clever, I say. :-) I have to admit --- our real life Indian Game of Thrones, far outthrills anything the Lannisters, or the Targaryens can evoke. Vindhya Sanjana

The term Marwari once referred to the area encompassed by the former princely state of Marwar, also called the Jodhpur region of southwest Rajasthan in India. The word Marwar is considered to be derived from Sanskrit word Maruwat, the meaning of maru being 'desert'. Others believe that Marwar is made up of Mar from alternate name of Jaisalmer and last part war of Merwar. It has evolved to be a designation for the Rajasthani people in general but it is used particularly with reference to certain jatis that fall within the Baniaethnic category. The Barnwals, Agarwals, Khandelwals, Maheswaris and Oswal house slowly and steadily with their sharp acumen they made the transition from being niche players in trading to become industrial conglomerates…. With so many jokes on Sardas, Sindhis and Parsis doing the rounds, would'nt the Marwari be offended if we don't speak of his pecularities! When it comes to being kanjoos (did you also hear makhichoos), the Marwari takes the cake and the paan and the papad too…heehee..They have their peculiar traits when it comes to money. Go to a Marwari wedding and you will get a taste of what heaven would be like when we make it there… but ask him to dish our some extra pennies for the sabziwall, oh my God!! now that is a Herculean task… Be it sabji, dal or roti you won't catch him wasting a single penny, but will let you leave no baati unturned, unmindful of the dripping ghee when you are at his palatial house. He will keep feeding you till you give out a few burps. A pot belly is also something he sports like a cherished treasure, the bigger the belly the more the moolah… The maddus as they are fondly referred to by one and all have an enviable sweet tooth. They can and do gorge on sweets for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The modern maddu has evolved and is doing the rounds of the clubs, bars , the hot tourist destinations with the wifey all deressed in the latest hep outfits(even if sometimes she has to put on these garbs in secret, away from the prying eyes of the no-nonsense MIL). He will go to all these jaunts, party away, take his fill of beer and whiskey; many a times the glass wrapped neatly with a tissue paper, lest the contents catch the wrong eyes…as if they won't!!! All said and done, the obedient son goes home and insists on following all the customs and rituals that the family has been following for generations. The tadka in the dal has to be exactly like his mother does it. The wife and children are dear, no doubt but no one is as dear as his dear dear mother……. Rajeev Jhaveri

Ladakh Travel

OCTOBER 2017 GOLDEN ORANGE

Ladakh is a place I have always wanted to visit. One had heard so much about its beauty and majesty. And yet,I hadn't even thought about running the Ladakh marathon.Right from the time we boarded the flight from Delhi to Leh,anticipation and excitement were running high. The snowy and majestic peaks was an awe inspiring sight, straight out of a picture postcard. We drove about 15 kilometres to our hotel in Stok village, on the outskirts of Leh(situated at approximately a little over11000feet above sea level) and we were so busy taking in the sights and sounds that we weren't even aware of the symptoms of altitude sickness that we had been warned. The property we were staying in was actually an old residence, surrounded by apple orchards which were laden with rosy, red and juicy apples. The mighty Karakoram Ranges visible from the room were a sight to behold. By next morning more accustomed to the altitude we drove around and our first stop was at the confluence of the Indus and Zanskar rivers which is very popular with rafting enthusiasts. We also visited Gurudwara Pathar Saheb, which dates back to the 16th century to Guru Nanak Devji's era, maintained in perfect condition by the Indian Army and the ancient monastery, one among the many that are all over Ladakh, which is predominantly Buddhist. It had started to snow as we reached Nubra valley, through Khardungla Pass, at 18000+ feet which is the highest motorable pass. The army outpost was manned by soldiers who were patiently answering the questions coming their way from tourists like us as well as obliging us by clicking pictures! At the sand dunes it was quite amazing to see the double humped camels,a shorter version of their rajasthani counterparts. The camel safari is quite popular. The journey to Pangong Lake, made famous by Aamir Khan's 'The three Idiots, takes 5-6 hours by road. The drive was beautiful with the mountains as our constant companions. As the sun was setting, we caught the first glimpse of the lake and the aquamarine of the waters along with the orange, golden and pink of the sky was a riot of colour. As soon as the sun sets in Ladakh, the chill sets in.The temperatures drop rapidly and how! On our journey back we crossed the Changla pass, which,at 17000 plus feet is the second highest motorable pass in the world. The next morning we reached the N.D.S stadium which was the start and end point of the marathon. The streets were lined with people and the stadium was full!Ladakh was showcasing its mega event in style.Hundreds of school children along with their teachers were participating and their enthusiasm was infectious. The Ladakh marathon, now in its 6th edition, has gained immense popularity over a short span of time.It attracts participants from as many as 27 countries across the globe. The undulating hills, the snowy peaks, the crispness in the air and one of the most spectacular routes make it so challenging yet popular. It is the world's highest marathon at an altitude of 11070 feet. Each person who ran or walked felt like a winner that day!The marathon truly tests the limits of each one's endurance but is an enriching and fulfilling experience . Ladakh‌ with its serenity, its beauty, its placid lakes, its warm, hospitable people will remain imprinted in my memory for all time to come! Jullay! Vrinda Rathi
