RI Update -CYCLISTS RAISE OVER $4 MILLION IN MILES TO END POLIO RIDE

JANUARY 2016 GOLDEN ORANGE

The fight to eradicate polio got a major financial boost from the annual ‘Miles to End Polio’ bike ride that took place, 21 November in Arizona, USA. Rotary General Secretary John Hewko and a team of eight RI staff members helped raise $4.4 million. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will match the funds 2to-1, bringing the total contribution to PolioPlus to more than $13 million. This is the fourth year in a row that Hewko has biked in the 104-mile (167 km) El Tour de Tucson ride, one of the country's top cycling events. More than 100 Rotary members from Arizona and

02

around the world hit the pavement with the Evanston team. The RI staff riders have been training together since September. “In the beginning, riding 104 miles seemed impossible,” says Jean Stanula, Rotary's Global Events supervisor. “But we came together early Saturday mornings and rode 20, 40, 60, and 80 miles. After a while, it felt like we could do anything.” Contributions of District Designated Funds (DDFs) were a big part in this year's fundraising effort, with more than $1.4 million collected. Districts can continue to donate DDFs to support the

fundraiser through 30 November. President-elect John Germ will visit the district that donates the most DDFs, and the top five contributing districts will be recognized onstage at the 2016 Rotary Convention in Seoul. Rotary members have taken part in the ride since 2009, when the End Polio Now campaign was designated, an official beneficiary of the race, allowing Rotary cyclists to gather pledges for the campaign. In the first year, 27 cyclists raised $35,000. The number has grown exponentially ever since.

President’s Message Dear Rotarians, The wintry month of December has been full of warmth and joy. Our generous Rotarians opened their hearts and pockets and gave to the world; gave where there was need; gave where there was disaster; gave to give relief. Their generosity must have brought joy and warmth to the beneficiaries. What else could we ask for? While we did our bit, there were visitors from abroad who appreciated the genuineness of our purpose and offered to help add smiles to our project, “Smiling Faces'. When we are at the receiving end , we realize how gratifying it is to have worked for a deserving cause. Amidst all our activities about which you will read n the following pages, we

had the OCV (Official Club Visit) of the Dist. Governor. The Charter Night celebrations kept many busy and wondering what the Show would be like. The classy presentation of the Costumes of Asia turned out to be a run –away hit. For those who attended, it was yet another GIFT. For those who didn't………well, they missed their Attendance too ! Talking about Attendance one wonders whether our Rotarians, who so eagerly get inducted, realize how important it is. With absence, you miss out on the essence of Rotary membership which is friendship, community involvement and a sense of purpose. December ended on a high with the much talked about Dist. Conference Anubhuti. Two of our Past Presidents

did us proud with the honours bestowed on them by Rotary International and Dist.3030.These are indeed footsteps to follow. May, the tribe of such true-blue Rotarians increase. That is my wish for the New Year. Wish you all a very Happy and Healthy New Year ! Khushnoor S. Chugh

such that people revere him even today. He travelled the length and breadth of the country imparting knowledge and gathering followers...500 years back...then why do we still feel a sense of calm and contentment on bowing in front of a idol representing him ?..I guess some things just do not have a scientific reasoning..Or is there a sense of contentment present in all of us, under all the anxiety and stress...it just requires a serene atmosphere and the company of fellow believers and their chants and hymns to bring it out. It is that time of the year again, when we ring out the old and bring in the new.

The time to let go of the past happenings and start afresh with new hopes, aspirations and vision. Wishing everyone a Happy New Year !! Hetal Sampat

Just visited the birthplace of an acclaimed guru of the gujarati vaishnav sect. The setting was peaceful....the atmosphere serene and gave all of us a sense of calm. We fed the gowmata some lapsi (gujarati sweet dish)and gave makhan misri to the idol of the renowned saint. All this 'seva' generated a sense of well being and we came back feeling uplifted due to an increased flow of endorphins. But very frankly, if we scientifically analyse what we have done..does it make sense ?? There was a saint about 500 years back who added immense value to the society in which he lived,

Charter Nite December the 13th 1944! The date our Club came into being. The day our Club got its Charter officially. Seems like another era. Well it is to a certain extent. 71 long years have passed. The Club has seen some 73 Presidents. Each with a mandate of his own. Each with a personal agenda. There have been ups and downs. Controversies. Accolades. A lot of bouquets and some brick bats too. What is constant though, is The growth. The fellowship. The service. Every President has his/ her soft corners but the Charter Nite has always been held in high esteem and has been celebrated with much love. President Khushnoor also had an idea. Just a small little wish!

13th Dec. As always, the creative geniuses of the Club got together and conceived and executed the dream into a reality. An extravaganza of color! What Co ordination! What a concept! You had more people on stage, than the total strength of many clubs! The program consisted of a series of Tableaus r e p r e s e n t i n g t h e d i ff e r e n t countries of Asia which were visited by Miss Universe -hopeful Shilpa Agrawal and her entourage. The spread - as lavish as the Show! Superb! Marvelous! Were some of the comments that I heard. Well from back stage I could not judge personally but I know how we all enjoy

Water management

15th Dec.

- Safe drinking water Safe Drinking water is an issue now in urban and rural areas alike. This is more of a concern in villages because of the low levels of literacy and health awareness. Although access to drinking water has improved, the World Bank estimates that 21% of communicable diseases in India are related to unsafe water. In India, diarrheoa alone causes more than 1,600 deaths daily. The Water Management Committee in collaboration with CSIR-National Environmental Engineering Research Institute, Nagpur took up a project “Safe drinking water : Employing SODIS. at Ramchandra Kamdee High School , at Dongargaon , about 20 kms from Nagpur City. About 100 school children were demonstrated this simple technique of disinfection of water and imparted knowledge on the benefits of this technology by Rt.Ann Rita Dhodapkar. SODIS is a virtually zero-cost technology. SODIS is disseminated through training of trainers, educating at the grassroots level, providing technical assistance to partner organizations, lobbying key players, and establishing information networks. SODIS is best promoted and disseminated by local institutions with experience in community health education. A long-term training approach and repeated contact with the community is needed to create awareness on the importance of treating drinking water and to establish corresponding changes in behavior. Prominently present on the occasion were Rtn. Khushnoor Chugh and Dr. Urmila Kshirsagar. -Rita Dhodapkar

Vocational Training

17th Dec.

These were boys from Manish Nagar Slums, who through Mr.Shriprakash Panda of Nirmay Bahu-Uddeshiya Sanstha had requested for a training in car washing. President Khushnoor conveyed this to Rt.Ann Deepa Kale who arranged a 2-day training for these boys at the Hyundai Worship in Wadi. The boys were very satisfied with the training imparted. They hope to use this training to earn some money.

Community welfare

17th Dec. - At Panchvati Vruddhashram Winter is here in its full gear and thus it's a difficult time for the aged. Hence the community services team thought of distributing Shawls to the inmates of Panchavati Ashram. This is home to 65 people away from their loved ones, thus living a secluded life. We all reached there at 11:30 am, which is their lunch time and everyone was there in dining hall other than those who are bed ridden. Rtn. Hira Mulani, who is always keen to help, sponsored the shawls. Our chairperson Anita Jain, who is a regular visitor of place brought biscuits for inmates. Our Sergeant at Arms Sonia Khurana and her Aunt sponsored oranges. Their efforts were well appreciated bythe inmates who showered blessings on us. Others present on the occasion were Director Non Medical Namita Sharma and chairpersons Anjuli Minocha.

pollution, road accidents, extreme weather conditions, travel time and cost are compelling reasons to have a Metro to serve the growing population spread across the city of Nagpur. The estimated cost of Metro Rail Project with 36 stations will be Rs. 8680 Crores. He was very keen to answer all the queries posted by the Rotarians and answered a lot of questions with detailed explanations .Mr Dixit proposed that with the help of our Club we can create awareness of the project among citizens so that maximum benefit could be availed. He generated a lot of interest in everyone but because of short of time the queries had to be restricted,

Rtn Mahendra Kamath proposed the Vote of thanks and mentioned that as we remember Mr Chandrasekhar for bringing transformation in Nagpur roads may Mr Dixit be remembered for bringing such a huge change with Metro Rail in Nagpur. Meeting was adjourned after the National Anthem -Chetna Singhal

Dr Chandrayan gave a presentation on all the aspects of the Metro project. The main question in everyone's mind was why do we need a Metro in Nagpur? Nagpur being the largest city in Central India is witnessing a rapid economic and infrastructural development specially in the fields of IT, Education and Healthcare sector. Present use of public transport is only 9% due to absence of reliable public transport ,further traffic congestion,

Voyaging Vikiing’s Musing A jewel called Belgium

If it's Tuesday, this must be Belgium! That's Belgium, a jewel in the European crown. Tiny, but a store house o f b e a u t y, c u l t u r e , architecture, canals, crystals, diamonds, lace, chocolates, beer, waffles........! I'll start with my first destination in this country, Bruges. This small town is breathtaking and picturesque with its winding canals, and the town was built mainly during 17th and 18th century. There are several boat services which take you around for cruise of the city. Tiny and quaint bridges are seen all over the canals. The boat ride is a super way of going into the interiors of the unexplored areas. Beautiful houses line the sides of the canals, overlooking the gorgeous view. The city centre is essentially the old part of the town. The prominent city centre square has some of the most famous buildings, mainly the town hall, the famous Salvador Dali (the famous painter) museum and the beer museum. Bruges is famous for beer distilleries. It boasts of hundreds of kinds of beer. Several lanes branch out from the Square into different directions, which have shops selling the most amazing wares, right from lace to beer. Beautiful hotels as well as spectacular family owned apartments can be booked for staying here. Restaurants and side walk cafes are lined all over the place. The cuisine served is truly International. One can hire a scooter and explore the narrow cobbled streets where cars don't go. It's a divine experience. One can also be adventurous and take a horse cart to explore the city. The famous block buster movie PK was shot extensively in Bruges. Just five kilometres from Bruges lies a sleepy but a picture perfect village called Damme. Tourists can go biking to this village and can also take a brisk walk along the canal. The little village is gorgeous with an imposing church in the village square, eateries and some ruins of monasteries and castles, which were bombed during the 2nd World war. Ghent. Yet another town, just 30 min away from Bruges. In Belgium, no place is further than an hour's journey by Euro rail. Ghent also boasts of an old town with cobbled streets, trams and spattering of Waffle cafes. Old churches, castles and magnificent buildings are part of the charm, in this city. The quaint town takes your breath away. It's difficult to describe the experience in words. Brussels. The capital city is a bustling metropolis. Very cosmopolitan in nature. The old town of Brussels is awinspiring with the royal palaces, churches and museums. The largest tourist attraction is the Atomanium. The grandeur is truly memorable. If you are lucky, you might find Indian tourists sitting on the palace ground, to munch on their Thepla ! Belgium is a beautiful little country, accessible from all adjoining countries via trains and automobiles. If you are visiting any neighbouring country, it's definitely worth a visit or even as a main destination.

Grey Zone Jonathan Livingston Seagull Richard Bach. Perseverance, Dedication, and the quest for knowledge and perfection are the cornerstones of this book written by Richard Bach. Written in 1970 this novella tells the tale of a seagull like no other. While all the other seagulls are content with flying to collect morsels of food and surviving; Jonathan Livingston goes against the convention in his quest for perfecting his flight. The first part begins with Jonathan a seagull who is bored with the daily fight for food and an existence solely for this purpose. He has a passion for flying and believes that the real zest of life is in perfecting his flight. Many a times he fails in his attempts to perfect his flight. And there are many incidences when he almost gives up on his pursuit only to be lured back by new achievements and findings. It is during one of these brainstorms that he reaches “Terminal Velocity” for the fastest speed in flying which is witnessed by members of his flock. When Jonathan returns that day to his home he finds himself being called upon in a Council Gathering. He thinks that as the other seagulls had witnessed his triumph he will be felicitated; however this is not the case and he is in fact being outcaste. Even this disgrace doesn't deter him from his goal and continues on until one day he is met

Kanchan Naidu by two radiant, loving seagulls who explain to him that he has learned much, and that they are there now to teach him more. This is the beginning of the second stage in Jonathan's life. In the beginning he thinks that he has reached heaven a place where all the gulls love flying. It is here that he also meets his mentor Chiang. It is through his teachings that he understands that heaven is in fact not a place or time but perfection itself as is understood from this excerpt from the book: “…..Heaven is not a place, and it is not a time. Heaven is being perfect. And that isn't flying a thousand miles an hour, or a million, or flying at the speed of light. Because any number is a limit, and perfection doesn't have limits. Perfect speed, my son, is being there…..”. Chiang also urges Jonathan to understand and practice forgiveness and love. Then one day Chiang moves to a higher level of perfection leaving behindJonathan to inspire and mentor the gulls that are left behind. The second part ends in Jonathan finally understanding the meaning of forgiveness and love. The third part of the books sees Jonathan back to his old world where he meets Fletcher Lynd Seagull who has also been outcaste by his Flock for trying to perfect flight. Jonathan takes Fletcher under his wings and starts to mentor him. Soon,

Life changing events such as a Big Meteor hitting the Earth are few and far between. But when they do..Toh Koshish rehti hai ki zor ka jhatka dheere se lage. Some basic concepts in life seem pretty incongruous but over a period of time can change the course of one's meandering existence into something more purposeful.Financially and mathematically speaking, the Pareto Principle is one of them.Simply put, it is the 80/20 rule, which says that 80% of the results can be attributed to 20% of the efforts directed towards a given event. So how does this rule help us in our investments? The first thing it does, is helps us to focus,Focus on that 20% which is more valuable, more profitable than the rest of the 80%. Then we go and allocate 80% of our time/efforts in that 20%.And over a period of time, we realize that our efforts and our investments start

to yield more.In fact this 80/20 principle can be used practically in every sphere of your life, be it investments or inventory, time management or diet management. Another simple mathematical principle which is very widely used as a quick calculator of returns, is the Rule of 72.If that small investment in MIHAN that you made five years ago has doubled, (which I doubt), it means that the approximate compounded annual yield that you have made on that investment is 72 divided by 5, i.e., 14.4%. Then comes the rule of 115.This helps you to estimate your returns when your investment trebles over a period of time. Say that same MIHAN investment trebled in 5 years (seriously?!!!!1) then your return will be 115 divided by 5, i.e., 23% And yes, we also have the rule of 144.This one will estimate the returns when your investment is quadrupled, so, when that

Fletcher is joined by few other young Seagulls and Jonathan's students go from one to eight. As Jonathan trains them he realizes that it is time for them to return to the Flock and try to inspire them. He understands that the only way he can reach more perfection is not by leaving behind the weak but inspiring them to attain perfection. This book brilliantly captures the emotions and trials one goes through when one follows ones heart and is passionate about something that keeps us awake in the night and urges us to follow that passion and not be bogged down by the ignorance and apathy that surrounds us.

Vinita Bahri investment grows 4 fold in 5 years( eyes rolling), it means that the investment is growing at the rate of 144 divided by 5, i.e., 29%. All these simple tools help us compare the options available, so we can take a calculated decision.Just flashing back 2015 just went by and we were faced with one crisis after another, the ISIS war, the Oil price crash, the shemitah year, the El Nino that led to global warming and droughts, US Fed Reserve Governor Yellen finally bit the bullet and increasing interest rates. Such is life….but then, Petrol is cheap, so are the home loans, can go for a vacation, maybe, And importantly, We are still standing, enjoying the fellowship, gaining knowledge, helping those we can and moving on….

Smart Alec It's the time of year when people start pretending they can erase the disappointment they feel in themselves by making New Year's Resolutions. Having depressingly failed their youthful potential, they can briefly revive the illusion of promise by spinning out lots of promises about who they're going to be next year. Unfortunately, the person making the promises to improve is still you. Because most people are terrible, incompetent, lazy and vain, it's worth translating what some common New Years resolutions actually mean. Resolution: I'm going to put 'me' first What This Means: I'm going to behave like an unremittingly selfish and entitled toddler for a whole year. Resolution: I'm going to Get Fit. What This Means: I'm going to get a Fitbit. Resolution: I'm going to give up smoking. What This Means: I'm not going to give up smoking. Resolution: I'm going to join a gym. What This Means: I'm going to join a gym, which is what I said I would do. I will not attend the gym, though I may buy some exercise gear. Resolution: I'm going to spend more time with my family.

What This Means: I will try to buy their love with artificially induced fun and forced family dinner times. Resolution: Keep being awesome. What This Means: I don't want to think about what's wrong with me. Resolution: I will spend less time on the Internet, disconnect from my devices and connect with the real world for genuine authentic experiences. What This Means: I will google "internet addiction", and read six articles about it, then follow interesting links until I end up wasting entire days trying to spend less time on the internet. Resolution: I will never drink again. What This Means: I have a hangover. I will wait until my hangover is gone and then celebrate with a drink. Resolution: My resolution is not to make any resolutions! What This Means: I have comprehensively failed my resolution in the moment of making it, recursively completing a cycle of goal-andfailure in the most efficient way possible. Happy New Year! Keep on trucking, and good luck with that human potential!!!

On the Board Durriya Akolawala

Raj was born in Chennai and moved to Nagpur at a very tender age. He kept shuttling between the two cities as many of his relatives are based in Chennai. So other than Hindi and English, our Gujju guy Raj is fluent in Tamil as well. Raj is a B-Com. graduate and successfully runs a jewelry business. He was also closely associated with Fashionista earlier. Raj married his childhood sweetheart Parul and they make a perfect couple. Their friendship, their compatibility, their comfort level with each other, their love for each other is such a delight to watch. They are blessed with three kids, Devanshi, Hariti and Viraj. Devanshi is currently studying in class 12 and aspires to become an engineer. Hariti and Viraj are still in school. Family life is the core of Raj's existence. Parul is an adoring wife, she is a multi-tasker; who is a perfect cook; who runs the household and takes care of the kids with finesse and is the pillar of strength for Raj. Her talkative bubbly nature and Raj's composed and calm nature work wonders together. The two along with the Rotary team have been a major reason why few of us in the Rotary family could dance to the garba beats. Their team has been conducting garba workshops for the Rotary

family for two years now and some of us non dancers have tested their patience limitlessly and they have been most gracious in not losing their cool and teaching us the authentic garba. The two were National Garba Champions in 2001 and kudos to them. Raj is also a biker. He is part of the 'Bawas on Bullet' family and has travelled as far as Leh – Ladakh on his bike. This is a testimony of his adventurous spirit. He is a fervent photographer and loves lens photography. This shows his artistic incline. He is a fitness freak and his day is never complete without a round of tennis and workout. All this rightly suggests that Raj Shah is an all-rounder! Raj joined Rotary in 2008, after he was introduced to Rotary and the projects and community service this club offers, by a friend. He immediately felt the need to connect with such selfless work. He had always wanted to associate with community service for a long time and Rotary provided a perfect platform for this. It is very worth mentioning that ever since he has joined the club, he has not missed a single Thursday Rotary meeting if he is in the town. He is Director Youth this year. His vision is to channelize the energy of our youth in the right direction. He wants to work more in cultivating and spreading awareness of community service amongst our kids so that they, the future youth of our society, take up this responsibility, and if I may add, as dedicatedly as Raj himself has taken this up. He has all the makings of a very responsible and able Rotary President in near future. All the best Raj, bau saras che!!

Raj Shah – a very active, sincere and dedicated Rotarian, is the best way to describe him. Shy, quiet, a keen observer, a thinker and when he speaks, extremely polite! It is very difficult to imagine such a personality getting angry, losing temper, raising his voice and rightly in Raj's case, he never loses his cool. I have had an opportunity to work with him for a very brief period and I can herald it to the world without any doubt that he is an excellent team leader.

traditional Indian family!Celebrating all festivals in traditional style with elaborate rituals kept her occupied & busy. So Girish Quit. He also quit because he wanted to finish off the Chartered Accountancy that he had had to leave half way.Today he is back, with a CA added to his name. He loves practicing it & Devika is now totally by his side. The kids are all grown. His mother has renounced the world & though Devika still follows all rituals & traditions, she promises to devote time to Rotary. She finds the Rotarians, younger & more fun today. Both love music. When asked, if she was aspiring to be a future President of the club, Jumana said, " No way! “ Don't we all believe so? Nobody joins an organization with plans of heading it one day! Jumana joined because Khushnoor insisted. Forced or pushed, the Club shall benefit from this, experienced, dependable, ever smiling Rotary Ann turned Rotarian, who has a lot more to her than what appears on the surface. Passionate about her work - dress designing, Jumana feels great about having made a name for herself. About having created that niche! What started as designing her own clothes has turned into a full time occupation for both Jumana and her sister Nisreen. It was not designing clothes that Jumana had planned. Having trained for teaching, she taught for 2 years in Centre Point school but had to quit when her first child was on the way. Shabbir, a brilliant boy, lived down the street and Jumana used to go to him to solve her academic difficulties. Rest is history! They stayed in touch, when Shabbir left to graduate from BITS Pilani. When he came back, they wanted to

Jumana and Shabbir Shakir

marry but her family was not ok with that as he wasn't settled. Initially, he joined his dad's business of batteries but then, started a printing unit with friend Shabbar. Finally in the year 1991, the sweethearts came together. Then came Zahra and then Zoher. Zahra, at 21, is in the final year at the Srishti School of Design at Bangalore,

graduating in Visual Communication. Zoher, at 19, is doing Law at ILS Pune. With both kids away, Jumana has all the time to indulge in her boutique and Rotary. Looking forward to one more talented lady, we await to see a lot more of Jumana.

Organ Donation & Transplantation

JANUARY 2016 GOLDEN ORANGE

Sqn Ldr (Dr) Rtn. Ravi Wankhede Chairman Organ Donation Awareness Committee Rotary District 3030 & RC, Nagpur. The history of transplantation is an epic journey describing the medical community's quest to understand how the human body works and its most daring efforts to defy illness and death. Between the lines, too powerful to capture in words, is its most important component - the generosity of organ donors, and the courage of transplant recipients. Organ donation is the process of removing organs or tissues from a live, naturally dead and Brain dead person to be used in another to sustain his/her life. Millions in our country die for want of life saving organs. Just about 5% people get transplants and the rest lead a miserable existence. Organs cannot be manufactured; they can be obtained from fellow human beings. There are a few organs which can be donated while a person is living (commonest is a kidney, since we have two independent kidneys) and more important is after death, as the organs are no more required. Organ shortages are a global problem, but Asia lags behind much of the rest of the world. India is no exception, in-fact we suffer the most. Anywhere between two and three million Indians may have died in the last five years because they could not get an organ transplant. Every 13 minutes a person is added to the waiting list of organ recipient. Organ donation after death is a routine practice in the developed world. In India, the donor figure is dismal, except in some Southern States. We just have to emulate them. More about the subject in 2016.
