The release of this issue of "Golden Orange" would witness the official farewell to the year 10-11 & simultaneous welcome to the customary exuberance, expectations & jubilation associated with new team through the festivities of Installation Ceremony. The same set of Rotarians would be exhibiting different & diverse feelings & emotions. Team 10-11 would take time to ponder, reflect & reminisce to bask in the glory of all that was achieved, accepting compliments. The New team would look forward with all determination & sparkle with body language radiating confidence & commitment. The members, chairpersons & directors put time & resources, heart & soul in organizing projects promoting rotary ideals & deserve our compliments, accolades & big THANKS!! I had the privilege of having Sunil Thapar, Prashant Kale & Sunil Bhatia to serve the needs of our members & act as facilitators to help execute the various projects, VP Atul Shah handled all the key assignments with verve & fervor & I also had the wisdom & experience of IPP Akhtar Maimoon to bank upon. In Tauby Bhagwagar we have a very able, talented, dedicated & committed rotarian to lead our Club in the next year & am sure our Club will flourish under her leadership. All our projects pertaining to the community, environment, internationalism & consolidation of our membership may or may not have brought tangible transformation but it certainly made explicit differentiation in my outlook towards life, its challenges & opportunities. The year unfolded & revealed beautiful meaning of compassion, empathy & camaraderie for me.
Thank you all for making this year a memorable one. The support we received from our President, Ganesh Joshi , Secretary Sunil Thapar, and the entire Golden Orange team, was what led us to receiving the Best Bulletin award at the National as well as District level. Khushnoor and I enjoyed every moment of our association with the Golden Orange. Our endeavour was to report to the Club members all the fabulous work and fellowship that our Club was doing. Our team was a group of dedicated rotarians and rotary anns, who shouldered the responsibility of sending write ups and reports on time. It's time to usher in the new team, and give them all the support that this Club is so famous for. Thank you all once again, and our best wishes to the next editor.

ON THE COVER:
But how do we measure success? As a member of service organization, have we provided platform & opportunity to members to serve the deprived & havenots of our society through pillars of Rotary Foundation? Have we been successful in involving & motivating each & everyone of our 313 members to participate in this movement of "Share to Rejoice"? We will have to sooner find an answer to this question to reach the benefits of this organization far & wide.

Re gul a r m e9eting June
th
Thursday 9 June 2011, Air Vice Marshal Mr. Vikram Pethia narrated his experience as POW during 1971 war against Pakistan at Udyog Bhavan and everyone hung on to every single word he spoke for 45 mimutes. th Never before has our club witnessed such pin drop silence during a rotary meeting. Never. Air Vice Marshal Mr. Vikram Pethia, a retired fighter pilot from Indian Air Force spent 38 years in the service. He had witnessed all the three wars of 1965, 1971 & Kargil against Pakistan .When the war of 1971 broke out he was posted at Bikaner. On 5th Dec. 1971 while on a mission his aircraft was hit and he had to eject the aircraft and found himself on Pakistani land, surrounded by local people. Later he was handed over to the police. The police shifted him to 3 different jails and always blindfolded where he had his horrifying, bone- chilling experience as POW. He narrated how Pakistan totally neglected Geneva Convention while dealing with POWs. He made 2 escape attempts but both futile. He was in the captivity for a period of 5months, 3days and few hrs. He th was released on 8 May 1972. Vote of thanks was proposed by Sylvester Issac . -Dr. Shubhada Gade

Change your life- Mr. RVM enlightens
th
June
R is rejoice, V is value of life, and M is make a difference, put these three together and you get the new ideology for living a better life, R VM. Mr. RVM as he has christened himself is the man Who has introduced us to look at life and its problems in a healthier way. After the huge success of his departmental store "Kidskemp" in Bangalore, which was the first name in transforming the retail culture in India, hr thought his life needed to be more meaningful. Introduced by Dr. Ravi Wankhede, he spoke on the topic "live life till you die". This vivacious man in a short span of time captivated the audience, by showing ways in which one can make life more rewarding and meaningful. In 2007, after ten years of running a successful business, he decided to move away from the money and luxury and never looked back nor regretted. He decided that all the wealth he has earned needed to put to some good use, for the benefit of those who were not as priviledged. He classified people in two broad categories: 1. those who only want to make money and 2. those who want to renounce everything they have. RVM lies between the two. These are the salient features of the RVM theory I. Re choice a. Count your blessings, b. Live positively and c. Enthusiasm 2. Value life a. Live every moment b. Introspect c. Have purpose and d. Don't just exist 3. Make a difference a. Be that change b. Reduce pain and suffering c.Give before you are gone.d. Share your life experiences. It's always easier said than done, but Mr. RVM believes that if these parameters are followed, we could make our lives more better and worthwhile. The evening was exhilirating and he also had CD's and pamphlets for sale. Dr. Manmohan Daga proposed a vote of thanks. -Team G.O.

This young engineering graduate literally has "music in her blood"! Tejaswini Kelkar learnt to play the harmonium on her own and has studied th 23 June Indian Classical music upto Madhyama Poorna. She has attended the A R Rahman KM Music Conservatory where she studied Western Classical music.Introduced by Dr. Ravi Wankhede, she was our speaker on the 23rd of June, and music lover or not everyone enjoyed the session. She explained the meaning of harmony, rhythm, notes and elaborated by singing examples of what she was saying. Her knowledge of the subject is vast to say the least and her selection of words and references led to an extremely absorbing experience. Tejaswini Kelkar - Nuances of Music She was very sure about her dislike for copying western compositions into mainstream Hindi songs, and what is popularly known today as "remixes". Inspite of a minor throat irritation, at the request of the audience, she rendered a beautiful number. Her smiling face and enthusiasm of her subject had the audience captivated. Thank you Dr. Wankhed for bringing her to our Club. Vote of thanks given by Dr. Shounaq Mokadam. -Team G.O.

Career Guidance Committee of Rotary Club of Nagpur conducted a session “IIT-Basics: From JEE Toppers & Counselors at Vasantrao Deshpande Hall in association with ICAD School of Learning. Along with the session Rotary Club of Nagpur also felicitated IIT-JEE topper Mr. Ishan Khot. Ishan is city topper in IIT-JEE with AIR-94 & in AIEEE his AIR is 36 and he is 2nd in state. Nagpur city has witnessed IIT rank in top 100 after a span of 4 years. Ishan Khot addressed the budding engineering aspirants of the city regarding IIT-Basics. He told about the dos & don'ts during the preparation period. He stressed to balance all the 3 subjects by giving equal importance. 60-60-60 score in P-C-M is better than 100-30-50. 2 years of hardwork and 6 hours of testing is the determinant. Ganesh Joshi, President of Rotary Club of Nagpur, said that earlier the education scenario was different & the competition was less and students who attended tuition where considered as weak. But today everything has changed drastically. The competition is severe and one has to get proper guidance & training to achieve results within a stipulated time span. Dr Abhijit Bharadwaj, a renowned pediatrician, told about parent's role in studies of their wards. The major part that parent should do is provide the perfect study environment at home & should give full emotional & mental support to their wards during the preparation. First Indian Rotarian!
By Bobby Srinivas When Rotary first came to India in 1919, just 14 years after the organization was founded by Paul Harris and his three colleagues in a very simple way, with the formation of the Rotary Club of Calcutta, the membership was entirely British or European. It should be remembered that at that time India was a British colony. It was then an era of British imperialism. To add an 'Indian touch' the well known Indian leader from Bengal Sir Surendranath Banerjee was conferred honorary membership! Many of the prominent Indian leaders were active with the freedom movement. However, some of them joined Rotary membership and nourished the Rotary movement during its formative years in India. The Calcutta club invited Mahatma Gandhi as a speaker in 1930. They had a vegetarian lunch to honor their guest. With his usual wit, Gandhi asked the Rotarians why they were having a Bengalee widow's lunch and depriving themselves of a more sumptuous meal! The first Indian member in Calcutta was S.C.Rudra who was inducted in 1921. The first Indian to become club secretary was Nitish C.Laharry (1926), later to become, president, district governor, RI director, RI vice president to reach rotary's top slot, viz., R.I. President in 1962-63. A.FM.Abdul Ali was the first Indian to adorn the collar of a club president in Calcutta. Thus the first Indian and Asian to become RI president was Nitish. It took near three decades for another Indian, Raja Saboo to become RI President in 1991. After another two decades Kalyan Banerjee will become President of Rotary International in July 2011.

Dear Fellow Rotarians, It gives me great pleasure in sharing a bit of good news with you all. On 19th June, 2011 we had organised a program by our Industrial Health Committee on "Cancer Caused by Tobacco and AIDS Awareness" at our factory premises Stewols India (P) Ltd. The program was to make the labour and staff aware of the consequences of tobacco addiction. It gives me immense happiness to share with you that not only was the program well received, about 15 of our workers have given up tobacco consumption and others are likely to follow. I would sincerely like to thank the Rotary Club of Nagpur for this initiative and special thanks to Dr. Akshay Daga - son of Dr. Manmohan Daga - for his wonderful and inspiring presentation. Also thanks to ever willing Chairperson Neeru Bhabhi & Dr. Ravi Wankhede for making this presentation a possibility. I would also like to thank ACCEPT an NGO for the brief information they provided on AIDS Awareness. I sincerely urge more members of our club to initiate such presentations Jehangir Doongaji

You relax on a sofa to watch your favorite soap, cuddle in bed to indulge in some pillow talk, draw the curtains and greet the new sun with a smile… Nothing touches you like Soft Furnishings... UPHOLSTERY With the myriad choices available its difficult to choose the right furnishings.. Here are some tips: 1. The upholstery you pick should be soft smooth and comfy. Fabrics like chenille, suede, velvet, silks polyester and jacquards are good options. 2. Plain or self textured materials have a classy and minimalist look. Light, neutral or pastel shades brighten a room illuminated with natural lights. WINDOW DRESSING Window is not just an arrangement of glass and timber. Curtains or shades can help create a warm cozy ambience. Quality curtains and blinds will shield the home and compliment your home décor. Glass tissue gives a light and airy effect velvet is rich and inviting. Light curtains allow for plenty of light. Ensure that the rods match the curtains as well as the wall colours. There are different styles in which curtains can be made –Pencil pleats , they look similar to a pleated skirt, Eyelet curtains-are great for adding a modern feel to any room .Instead of having a straight flat length of material, having the rods weaving in and out of material creates a wavy effect, which really softens your room and accentuates your windows. BED LINEN The bed is the focal point of the bedroom so the choice of material, color and pattern determine the bedrooms ambience. It could be of pure cotton, polyester cotton, velvet, satin etc. QUILTS Cotton quilts are the best since they absorb sweat and enhance comfort. Polyester filling is preferred to cotton as it does not allow the growth of bacteria and is machine washable. BEDCOVERS These have two functions: (1) protecting the bedsheet (2) decorating the room to make it opulent. The bedcovers are generally of heavy material as it should not be crumpled whole day long! PILLOWS These create a feeling of comfort and also decorate beds. For filling feathers are soft and extremely luxurious. CUSHIONS These can add the right touch to your bed with their colours textures and patterns and heighten the visual drama. Thus, giving a Dramatic look to your room. -Rakhi Bahatia

Thank You and Adieu My dear friends, It was a true joy having served our Esteemed Club as a Secretary. My term would be in-complete without expressing my heartfelt gratitude and thanks to each and every member of our Club for making it possible. The responding style of each one was different but the objective was not to see through one another, but to see one another through and working together to win. This resulted in my building up a wonderful friendship with almost all of you during this year which I shall always cherish. With pride and happiness I wish to thank specially my fellow board members with whom working was such a pleasure and the bonding developed would last a lifetime. My thanks to our President Ganesh for choosing and inspiring me with his steadfast leadership. My thanks to Atul and Sunil who were always there to provide a great support system to me. Our friendship I shall always warmly regard and cherish. I may not have been perfect always but as good friends you took it in your stride and taught me that talents don't have to be perfect to use them. And further strengthened my belief that the secret of a carefree life is to walk with friends today and trust them for tomorrow. Thank you very much for being there with me. Dear friends I really enjoyed my year. You all were great and that is what helped us to achieve everything we did during the year. Lastly I can only say “During the year there was no such thing as bad weather but only different kinds of good weather”. Thank you one & all. With warm regards, -Sunil Thapar

The work will continue for another fortnight, and we are hopeful for completion of the same. More pictures will be sent by Magan Sangrahalaya with the bills, as agreed by them.

New Rot a ri a n It was a pleasure to get to know this 'new' Rotary family... they seem to know how to balance their lives perfectly. Work hard and party hard seems to be their motto and will definitely work well for us if we can take a leaf out of their book. Meet Vishal and Rakhi Bhatia... Bhatias- Rakhi, Vishal, Chiranshu & Nabhanya
GO: Rakhi, we would like to know more about you... where are you from and what was your journey before you took up interior designing as your profession... Rakhi: I come from Delhi. My primary education was from Calcutta and then in Dehradun. Finally I ended up in Nagpur to study interior designing. GO: How did you meet Vishal? Was yours an arranged or a love marriage Rakhi: Ours is a love marriage. I met Vishal at a wedding. We knew each other for four long years. GO: What does Rotary mean to you... and what are the projects that you enjoy being a part of? Rakhi: Rotary fascinated me with the fact that Rotarians manage many things including their businesses. Working for Rotary gives me immense pleasure and a break from my routine work! GO: Vishal, tell us something about your work. Vishal: “ROLLING.” – I keep your cars rolling on the roads and hence my finances keep rolling too! I think you've guessed it.. I'm into tyre trading. GO: Rakhi... what about your children? How old are they and what do they do? Rakhi: Our son, Chiranshu has just completed his 12th. He is an ace cricketer. He is going to U.S.A for his undergrads and will be studying
Engineering there. We have a lovely daughter of 14years – Nabhanya. She in 9th standard in BVM school. She's a good basketball player and has represented her school many times. She actively takes part in all rotary family events where ever needed. She loves Rotary!!! GO: Vishal, what are the two aspects about Rakhi that you admire and what are the two things about her that you would like to change... if possible... :) Vishal: She is a perfectionist and a friendly person! She's finicky about cleanliness. (The things I'd like to change)She's always very devoted towards her work and can even ignore me for it . GO: Rakhi please answer the same question. Rakhi: A very happy go lucky man! Loves eating drinking and celebrating for no reason at all!! He is full of zest and enjoys life to the fullest. He has always supported me for my social as well as official work.(The things I would like to change) -> He is always surrounded with his friends. Raised in Nagpur for the past 40 years he has many friends. This leaves very little time for the family. GO: What is your passion? What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? My passion is designing.. I love reading books & also love writing articles. In my spare time I usually make sketches related to my work! -Madhavi Naidu
