Thinking Otherwise Problem of plenty After attaining critical mass, the ball is set in auto motion. All you need is managing capabilities. India due to its big size and humongous population offers plenty of opportunities. With that, come plenty of problems. Privileged are those who flip these words and encounter problem of plenty. Mostly taken in positive inferences it's a blessing for a person to encounter problem of plenty. Just imagine how this scenario could be; Government facing large fiscal surplus, RBI wondering what to do with too much of forex reserve, economist finding tools to cool of economy, Warehouses running short of space to store record production of grains (its already there I think) India hard pressed to manage large foreign tourist influx, large population of Tigers searching for their territory, Indian Olympic selection committee's dilemma on whom to ignore as all are potential medal winners, Virat Kohli getting fed up with scoring centuries, Political parties unable to short list from large number of honest & sincere candidate while voters in a fix to decide upon the preferred one. Oh….the last one brought me to senses. What a beautiful dream it was!! But frankly with so many mega projects conducted this month, I actually encountered problem of plenty. Kudos chairpersons and members. Till the time you conduct many more meaningful programs, let me go back to my dreams!! -Parag Paranjpe

INTERACT ACTIVITY

Sandhya Sanwardhan Sanstha is a nonprofit trust, which runs a school for mentally challenged and committed to this noble cause since 1993. Sandhya Sanwardhan Sanstha is an organization with a difference. It is promoted and managed by a group of committed, honest, sincere and educated trustee members. The work is executed through technically qualified staff with full devotion. The core working philosophy revolves around eternal principle of “ SHIV BHAVE JEEV SEVA”. WALKATHON 2014!!! th

On the morning of 17 Feb, the Jogger's Park near Ramgiri bears a deserted and forlorn look. The tide has ebbed. The multitudes have vanished. Yesterday morning, i.e. on 16th February, Sunday, this very location was teeming with thousands; and the excitement had to be seen to be believed. The Walkathon is perhaps the most visible PR event, which includes people of all ages and brings them together for a few hours on a Sunday morning, with a simple yet far-reaching message - Walk for Life! Walking, especially in the morning is widely perceived and now increasingly accepted as a means to a healthy life, and this needs as much publicity as possible. Though many believe it to be a competitive event in the city's sport calendar, I would say undoubtedly that it is an event, which uses the platform to spread the message of healthy living. And how

aspects such as registration / distribution / collection / refreshments / locations/ set up/ add-ons, etc. not to forget following up with and convincing sponsors, negotiating with the vendors, chasing them for delivery and execution, ensuring and managing media coverage are all over in the space of 3 hours on a Sunday morning. The prime objective – PR – was achieved over the last 3-4 weeks by spreading the message over the internet using social media, following it up with information and advertisements in print media, talk shows on Radio, Static Hoarding, Banners and posters spread across the city at schools, colleges, public places, offices, factories, various government offices and finally also through hoardings mounted on moving trucks which moved all over the city spreading the message of the event and the

better space for the thousands who attend the programme. A police band was introduced to encourage the participants at the start line and in between laps. In addition, single use multipurpose fluorescent coloured wrist bands were introduced both for the purpose of identifying the participants walking various distances, and to double up as refreshment coupons. Special quality dri-fit T-Shirts were also introduced. All young participants were given helium balloons which bore the logos of the sponsors as well as Rotary International. Aerial videography and still photography was done to enable better understanding of the massive size of the contingents who walk. These videos and images are available for viewing at www.rotaryclubofnagpur.org One way of ensuring good recall value to anything is to make it memorable for those who attend.

well was this represented when we had the youngest participant aged 6 and the oldest aged 88! Some of these exceptional participants were recognized and felicitated during the closing ceremony. A young lady of 29, who is a patient of rheumatoid arthritis with both hips replaced, impressed by walking and completing the 9 kms event. Kudos to their joie-de-vivre! Two months of planning, weighing changes in the event as also the details and options for managing the various

benefits of walking. A pre-event press conference also ensured a huge coverage across multi lingual newspapers all of who covered and shared the details for the benefit of their readers. It would be amiss not to acknowledge the local print media, Times of India, Radio Mirchi, Cartel Systems and Attrait Solutions all of whom gave their best support. There were several innovations in this edition… The pre and post event venue area was double that of earlier years to ensure

This year it was the intention to do this very thing. One buzz word (or phrase) we used all along was – fun for the family. To the many who did not know of past Walkathons, everyone involved in the registrations only pushed the word “Carnival”. In the end, it was a fun filled morning in all respects – fantastic weather, clear sky, police band on one side playing “Kadam-Kadam badhaye ja” with children walking around with balloons, hot poha and idli Sambhar washed down with

WALKATH N coffee or tea; and a young and enthusiastic group of college students exhorting the crowds to sing with them to “ashaayen” ………. The word memorable seems rather lame…. the event will remain in the hearts and minds the whole year round, till the next edition comes around in 2015, and brings with it even more innovation. Another aim from the start was to give back in return something of value to the sponsors, for their support to this PR project. Overcoming skepticism was difficult, and at times we did feel we were promising them something, which would be difficult to achieve. However, post facto, the Walkathon team is confident that our sponsors have nothing to complain about; and, if considered from impact point of view, the value per rupee spent and recalls value of the project is astounding. Gratitude is due particularly to Dr Arneja (Arneja Heart Institute), Mrs Neeta Buche and Mr Punit Sehgal (Axis Bank), Mrs Deepali Kale (Jaika Insurance Brokerage) and Mr Rahul Gugaliya (Godrej Properties). One is reminded of a Carlos Castaneda quote on spirit, perception, intent, and freedom - The third point of reference is freedom of perception; it is intent; it is spirit; the somersault of thought into the miraculous; the act of reaching beyond our boundaries and touching the inconceivable. Well, in all respects the members and spouses, Rotaractors, etc. simply rose to the occasion and ensured that they had the intent, they had the perception and the spirit to pull off the inconceivable! Or simply put, “Look at Not why it can't be done, but how it can be done” - Nimish Sutaria

In the morning session, the students trekked the jungles and visited an old forest guest house. Also we went to see museum and information

center depicting the flora and fauna of the village. The students also went for a boat ride in the Pench River. In the second half, the students visited a local school, where they donated stationary items and clothes to the school children. The teachers and students were thankful to the

Shani Dham has 30 temples named after various saints. After that we visited Padri Thana. The Priest prayed for us and the students led by Shreya Ramteke had the honour of donating Rs 500 for the orphanage to the Priest. He prayed for the students and spoke about the history of

16

that ancient village. Later we went to MakarDhokda to visit Jawahar School where the students donated a huge quantity of pen, pencil, rubber, sharpener, color box, crayons, notebooks, story books to the teachers who will then distribute to the students as per the need. In the second half, the students were under the guidance of Mr. Ghuge and Mr. Mohadikar who took them for Jungle Trek to teach about flora and fauna, drip irrigation, solar fencing etc. Later

they conducted simple science experiments with water bucket, water bottle, balloon, air pressure etc. The students were thrilled to see it all. As it was getting dark, many students had the joy watching stars through telescope. Mr. Abheek Ghosh told us of mythological stories about the Orion star and its constellation. But soon, clouds gathered which spoilt the star watch. Every student had great memories of the day and we were back to school by 9.30 pm.

RAG The flag off of our mission Pachmari project was a bit delayed as the rain Gods wanted to play spoiled sport. President Prashant was the first one on the scene, followed by President elect Bharat Goenka...Slowly but surely riders, chair persons & a bit of sunlight began to appear on the scene lifting the spirits of the riders...Six bikes & a back up team in a Skoda Rapid were flagged off by President Prashant Kale at 7;15 am. Lucky for us there wasn't a drop of rain along

ADVENTURE TRIP TO PACHMARI the way, frequent halts for chai, poha & Taubys sandwiches kept the riders well fed & rested. A bit of a detour before Tamiya - took us to Patal Kote, from where we went down into what seemed like the depths of partial itself... but the scenery and the roadworthy route was well worth the additional 100 kilometers. The three days spent at the Champak bungalow flew past really quick - or was it just because of the great company & the good food...

SLUM & WOMEN UPLIFTMENT COMMITTEE More than 40 women gathered at the SunShine Centre on February 1, 2014, to learn low cost recipes that would meet the nutritional needs of their families. Rtn Shailaja Pingle and Mrs Malti M. Kadu shared their invaluable knowledge, gave cooking demonstration, and interacted with the homemakers from poor families. The women learned how to make nutritious rotis and ladoos using soya, wheat flour, besan and other ingredients. This was a joint program of SunShine Foundation and the Rotary Club,

Bike excursions to Dhoopghad, Mahadev, Gupt Mahadev, Echo Valley & a really tricky ride to Duchess Falls kept all entertained. On the way back we made a bit of a late start 10;30am but took the usual route back via Tamia & in spite of the frequent stops & the great food along the way back the team were able to make it back to Poonam Chambers before Sundown...bringing an end to what seemed like a wonderfully hectic yet relaxing extended weekend... -Parheez Gimi

MARK YOUR DATES FOR ONE OF THE BEST ART AND THEATRE FESTIVALS OF THE WORLD!

Festivals… India's so full of them, we must have one every day! As much as we enjoy celebrating them in our home country, it's interesting to know that there are many festivals celebrated around the world, and amongst a few avid travellers a fetish to visit them. They are definitely not all Religious, while a few could have started with some tradition or the other, many are related to the customs of the place, the season, the sport, music genres, films, food, drink and even education! To name a few which would certainly ring a bell for most of you are the La Tomatina festival, Sundance festival, Mardi Gras New Orleans, Carnival of Rio de Janeiro, the famous Lantern festival in Taiwan, Oktoberfest. In my visit to Scotland last summer in August, a family reunion of sorts, we were driving across the country from our base at Killin and ended the trip with a stay at Edinburgh. This was around the 18th of August. This Scottish town, famous world over for its University, its Arts and Architecture program and of course the Edinburgh castle, just bowled us over. What a beautiful town, a pleasure to explore on foot the many museums, historical buildings and markets.

TRAVEL BUG

But what luck! We happened to be bang in the middle of the famous FRINGE FESTIVAL. It goes on from the 1st to the 25th of August and it's the largest street art and theatre festival in the world! There are over 3000 shows to choose from around the world and the entire city's restaurants, pubs and halls participate in holding these shows. The most interesting part of the Fringe festival is that combined with the shows, is the street fair on The Royal Mile, an entire stretch of road that's converted into a non-traffic zone with a full carnival atmosphere. All the participants from across the world are selling their shows on this street in the most innovative ways… you have

comedian cum dancer, you can't really get enough of it. Yes for sure Indians also participate, so there were some Indian acts too! Besides this there are a lot of quaint shops and stalls selling Scottish good, curios, bag piper, kilts, chocolates and antiquities. You hardly realize how you've passed the day meandering in between these and the show people. In the snaps you see a blue colour lady statue, well she's live and acting, most amazing. Each act is a total surprise. If you are planning a visit to the UK this summer, especially in August… do drop into Edinburgh and catch the FRINGE, it's

human statues, actual scenes from Shakespeare being played out, music fests, gory scenes, comedy all of it showcased to gain your attention. A square at the Royal Mile is converted into a kind of stage and one of the best acts we saw was by an Argentinian

certainly a must do on a long list of must see's, must do's of travel. You'll not only have fun, but get to see so many cultures and theatre from across the world, it'll only leave you wanting more. - Farzana Haque

NEW MEMBER

MAMTA JAISWAL

Born & raised in the small town of Adilabad, she did her schooling & B Com along with a Diploma in Computers & Commercial Practice, followed by Post Graduation in Computer Applications from Adilabad & Hydrabad. Got married to childhood sweetheart Manish & came to Nagpur in 1996. Their son Pranay was born in 1997. Just raising a child was not enough for her so she did a Diploma in Fashion Designing from ARENA & EVA Institute at Nagpur. Got a job at NIIT Mumbai but her in laws were not in favour of her working outside of Nagpur. So she started manufacturing childrens' garments along with a partner friend and not only created a local market but also started exporting, these garments, along with designer sarees & bed covers to US, where her sister is settled. This stint didn't last long though, as their family separated & Mamta along with Manish had to build a new home as well as a business along with the real estate work that they were already doing. Saanvi soon followed & once again Mamta, needed to channelize her zeal to do something constructive in life. It was Akash & Shilpa Agrawal, their kitty friends, who suggested Rotary to them. Manish, was extremely busy with his newly set up business so Mamta joined, during, Rtn. Ganesh Joshi's term. PP Tauby fascinates her the most! One day she would want to achieve all that (& more) Tauby has. But the Rotarians who have left a permanent mark on her are the Naidu brothers. They say a small gesture of courtesy goes a long way. It was Vijay, who welcomed her with a cup of tea, the day she was inducted & since then, he has been Godfather to her. She looks up to him for counseling & advice & both Madhavi & Viju; she feels are her true friends. She got active almost as soon as she joined. 'Greetings' & two years of 'Fellowship during Meetings' gave her a chance to know a lot of Rotarians. Manish, who is the focal point of her life, stands by her through thick & thin. He encourages & supports her in all her endeavors. Though not a Rotarian himself, he is ever willing to take up all kinds of tasks for Rotary. So much so that they even attended a Rotary Meeting in London, while on a family holiday. This year she is chairperson for the International Youth Exchange Program & has single handedly, managed to get a record 24 candidates. This has brought instant glory to her & Dist. Governor Kishor Kedia, personally recommended her name to be included in the district officer's list! Barely 3 year old in Rotary, this chit of a girl is a package full of surprises. Her ever willingness to help, will undoubtedly take her a long way. Welcome Mamta. May your tribe rise! - Manju Shahani

RAHUL KALE Not yet 40 & he has already travelled to maybe 40 countries! An active Rotaractor for 3 yrs, from 1995 -96 to 1999, he has enjoyed Rotary from childhood. (I remember him conducting quizzes during Rotary fellowships & picnics) Son of Vilas & Neeta Kale, life has been kind to him & he always saw it as fun. Till recently when his genes for Service & Philanthropy got the better of him & he wanted to do more than just live life king size. Dr. Manmohan Daga encouraged him to join Rotary & he was inducted, during Rtn. Atul Shah's term. He almost immediately got involved with the Program Committee & is quite enjoying it. Would love to be more involved in service projects as well as training programs. Travel for both business & pleasure doesn't give him as much time as he would like to devote ideally to Rotary. Though involved in the family business, he wanted to do something of his own. Started a new line of Herbal Cosmetics – IRAYA & today he has a big domestic market in Spas all over the country & exports to Europe, US & mainly Russia. All this, plus he has to his credit a State of the Art factory & an office in Mumbai. To have achieved so much in so short a period does call for accolades but with brilliant parents like his & the kind of education he has had, this doesn't come as a surprise. He was in SFS School for the first 4 yrs. Went to Rishi Valley for the rest of his schooling. He started with a commerce degree at Hislop but went on to complete it at Symbiosis – Pune. Keeping with the trend, he did his MBA from both Paris & UCLA (USA). Well educated, moneyed, renowned family, reasonably good-looking – he would make an ideal catch for any girl but says he is content to stay single, at least as of now! Who knows? Welcome Rahul to the Rotary family. - Manju Shahani

CENTRAL INDIAN Some time past, there was agitation galore in Mumbai against North Indians seeking jobs in the metropolis. This is an ironical twist. About 50 years ago the agitation was against South Indians. The Southies have so acclimatized and naturalized to Mumbai in more than three or four generations that they have now joined the Mumbaikars in the anti-north agitation! Generally the Hindi belt and Punjab come to be known as North India. How much of India is South India? Given half a chance, the Southie, with the aggressive DMK parivar around, will take the whole of India! Nobody talks of East, West and Central India! Oftentimes, I am asked: “Are you a South Indian?” “No, Central Indian!” “I mean where you originally come from?” “Nagpur” That leaves the questioner confused and confounded. And that was the intent of such

answers! Moreover the emphasis is of Nagpur's importance as the geographical center of India with Zero Mile commencing from the city. In the good old days of British administration in India, to many in the imperial capital Delhi and in the north, all south of the Vindhyas was Madrassi!! This was perhaps due to influx of job seekers to the imperial capital from Madras Presidency. With more literacy, better education, willingness to go places and work hard these people from the south outclassed job seekers from the Hindi belt. A classmate of mine who lives in Madhya Pradesh (M.P.) and became a Member of Parliament (M.P.) asked me if I spoke Madrassi language! I asked this M.P. from M.P. if spoke M.P.! He was not amused. There is no language called M.P. he asserted. Nor is there a language called Madrassi! The Presidency is gone and the city of the same name renamed

BOBBY'S BUBBLES Chennai. The Presidency itself in Independent India is now part of several States like Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu, which still thinks, is the real successor to the Presidency! There is awareness now that the non-existent Madrassi language is really Oriya, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Konkani, Coorgi and the one and only Tamil! There is also a greater awareness of the land and its people of the Indian peninsula, of Godavari, Krishna and the news-making River Cauvery! This is a land rich in history and of forgotten empires not well recorded by historians of British influence. Fortunately nature's bounty like river water does not recognize soils of different States but flows majestically for people to quench. Likewise if India is considered one Bharat Bhoomi (and to many Punya Bhoomi) with all as sons and daughters of the same soil there needs to be no agitation! - Bobby Srinivas

FROM RI H I S T O RY O F R O TA RY INTERNATIONAL "The first four Rotarians (from left): Gustavus Loehr, Silvester Schiele, Hiram Shorey, and Paul P. Harris, circa 1905-12." The first four Rotarians (from left): Gustavus

Loehr, Silvester Schiele, Hiram Shorey, and Paul P. Harris, circa 1905-12. Paul P. Harris, an attorney, wanted to create a professional group with the same friendly spirit he felt in the small towns of his youth. On 23 February 1905, Harris, Gustavus Loehr, Silvester Schiele, and Hiram Shorey gathered at Loehr's office in Room 711 of the Unity Building in downtown Chicago. This was the first Rotary club meeting. They decided to call the new club “Rotary” after the practice of rotating meeting locations. Within five years clubs had formed across the country, from San Francisco to New York.

THREE REASONS TO STRENGTHEN ROTARY'S IMAGE In August 1910, Rotarians held their first convention in Chicago. The 16 clubs that existed at that time united to form the National Association of Rotary Clubs. In 1912, the name changed to Internation a l Associatio n of Rotary Clubs to reflect the addition of clubs in o t h e r countries. The name Rotary International was adopted in 1922. By July 1925, Rotary had grown to more than 2,000 clubs and an estimated 108,000 members on six continents. Rotary's reputation attracted presidents, prime ministers, and a host of other luminaries to its ranks — among them author Thomas Mann, diplomat Carlos P. Romulo, and composer Jean Sibelius. As Rotary grew, members pooled their resources and used their talents to serve their communities. The organization's dedication to this ideal is best expressed in its motto:

Service Above Self.

THE FOUR-WAY TEST "In 1932, Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor created The Four-Way Test. " In 1932, Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor created The Four-Way Test. The test, which has been translated into more than 100 languages, asks the following questions: Of the things we think, say or do Is it the TRUTH? Is it FAIR to all concerned? Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

ROTARYS OFFICIAL MOTTO

22

Rotary's official mottoes, “Service Above Self” and “One Profits Most Who Serves Best” trace back to the early days of the organization. In 1911, “He Profits Most Who Serves Best” was approved as the Rotary motto at the second convention of the National Association of Rotary Clubs of America, in Portland, Oregon. It was adapted from a speech made by Rotarian Arthur Frederick Sheldon to the first convention, held in Chicago the previous year. Sheldon declared, “Only the science of right conduct toward others pays. Business is the science of human services. He profits most who serves his fellows best.” The Portland Convention also inspired the motto “Service Above Self”. During a convention outing on the Columbia River, Ben Collins, President of the Rotary Club of

Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, talked with Seattle Rotarian J.E. Pinkham about the proper way to organize a Rotary Club, offering the principle his Club had adopted, “Service,

Not Self”. Pinkham invited Paul P. Harris, who also was on the boat trip, to join their conversation. Harris asked Collins to address the convention, and the phrase “Service, Not

Self” was met with great enthusiasm. At the 1950 RI Convention in Detroit, slightly modified versions of the two slogans were formally approved as the official mottoes of Rotary - “He Profits Most Who Serves Best” and “Service Above Self”. The 1989 Council on Legislation established “Service Above Self” as the principal motto of Rotary, because it best conveys the philosophy of unselfish volunteer service. “He Profits Most Who Serves Best” was modified by the 2004 Council to “They Profit Most Who Serve Best” and by the 2010 Council to its current wording, “One Profits Most Who Serves Best”.RI Publication - Compiled by Vishwas Sahasrbhojaniee

GIRISH DEODHAR – DIRECTOR VOCATIONAL SERVICES His trainers hat is on from the word go and in the two hours that we spend together I feel like one of his many students absorbing his many philosophies. An orator par excellence, a fountain of ideas and an achiever in his profession and the various forums that he is a part of - meet Director Vocational – Girish Deodhar. Born on 19th December 1958 to a Konkanasth Brahmin family and raised in Akola, Girish studied in a convent school 'Holy Cross Convent School'' and was a mediocre but hardworking and sincere student. In the 10th Std he was appointed House Captain and Band Captain since he played all the band instruments i.e. drums, flute, symbols etc. He has a beautiful handwriting and thus for 5 years he was the writer for the school bulletin. After matriculation he joined the LRT college of Commerce in Akola. With his B.Com degree in 1978 he also qualified as a Rashtra Bhasha Ratna which is almost equivalent to an MA in Hindi. He has avid memories of singing in the college orchestra, elocution, debates and participating in singing competitions in his college life. On completion of graduation, he took up articled training with M.P.Chitale & Co., a CA firm which even today is one of the top 15 CA firms of Mumbai. From a spacious house in Akola he moved to a modest apartment in Mumbai, Grant road area which was a turning point in his life. Overcoming all odds like studying in the cramped confines of a lift to an overcrowded Petit Library in uptown Fort area, he qualified as a chartered accountant in 1984. He believes in the TINA (There Is No Alternative) philosophy and thus strives to achieve all that he sets his mind to. He set up practice in Nagpur, his specialisation being Project Finance, in 1985 and saw a long uphill struggle to establish his name in the

profession. He joined the Jaycees simultaneously and started taking active interest in the training wing. He cleared one exam after another and was soon certified as an International trainer. This training in soft skills has held him in good stead and he is now Chairman of VIAs HRD forum and III (Industries, Institute and Interaction) Forum. He conducts corporate and institutional training programmes. To date he has conducted more than 1000 training programmes. He has visited Singapore, Japan and Dubai for training and professional development. He was also elected as President of Orange City Jaycees in 1991. He married his better half, the delicate, pretty,

graceful, Gayatri though the arranged route in 1987. Gayatri the youngest of 3 sisters is Nagpur born and bred and her long flowing tresses are the envy of many !!! She is a fitness enthusiast and has indepth knowledge on diet and exercise. You can say she is a 'gym bond''. They have two sons 25 year old Shrirang and 21 year old Mangesh. Shrirang is an MBA in Media and Communications from ISBM Pune and is currently working with Pratisaad Ad. Agency and Production House, Pune. Shrirang has a passion for Deejaying and has done more than 100 shows in colleges, corporates etc. Interestingly, he has been playing for the last 3 years consecutively at Le Meridien, Pune on New Year's eve which

ON THE BOARD is a tall achievement for this young lad from Nagpur. Mangesh is currently pursuing CA and CS course having cleared the entrance for both. Gayatri feels that rather than firmly disciplining the children one should strive to earn their trust so that they can tell the parents whatever is in their mind. A lady of few words, Gayatri's earnestness shines through. He was introduced to Rotary by Rotarian and current President Prashant Kale who had appreciated his work in the Jaycees. As a Director Vocational he had aimed to conduct 4 major programmes by inviting renowned speakers from outside Nagpur during this year and to date 3 have been conducted. He was also the pioneer in starting brainstorming sessions in R o t a r y, w h i c h w a s conducted at the beginning of this current rotary year. ON THE BOARD Her enthusiasm is infectious. The warmth she exudes can bring a smile to the most morose of people. Her hospitality is absolutely splendid, there must not be a single acquaintance who has not experienced the cozy and fun filled get togethers at the Shahani residence. She not only is a fantastic cook but can whip up a meal for 60+ without fuss !!!!! Her habit of matching attire with hubby and renowned Rotarian Chandru is well known. So let us know more about Jt. Secretary Manju Shahani. Born on 5th March, 1957 in Gandhidham, Kutch, Manju is the eldest of three siblings. Her younger sister is settled in the US and brother, Sanjay is in Nagpur and member of our Rotary as well. Not a very studious child, she managed to excel academically. She even got a double promotion in Std 6 and was thus underage for her matriculation examination. The Board initially did not give her permission to appear for the examination, but on persistence by her school management and her family, she was allowed to appear for them. The IndoBangladesh skirmish was at its peak in early 1972 when she was studying for matric. Inspite of all the tensions, sirens and blackouts she managed to score well. She clearly remembers that one night during blackout there was a blaze in the city, the sirens went off and the Pakistanis conducted an air raid wherein 91 bombs were dropped on Gandhidham. Not a single bomb went off as they fell on sand. These kids collected these bombs as souvenirs. She wanted to take up medicine as a profession but unfortunately things didn't work out and she studied BA (Honours) at Gandhidham. In her first year, she took part in the students' agitation led by Jaiprakash Narayan as part of his Navnirman Andolan. She was arrested by the police and was in lockup for almost 2 hours !!! After her second year examination, in 1974 she met Chandru through an arranged match by a very close common relative. Her first impression of Chandru was that he was wearing a peach shirt !!! A colour not very common amongst young men. Coincidentally she herself was wearing a peach saree and thus they started a trend of wearing the same colour when they step out together. They were married in 1975

MANJU SHAHANI- JT. SECRETARY and their son Aashish soon followed in 1977. Inspite of being in the family way, Manju cleared her graduation exams after much persuasion from her mother. Her second son, Anuj was born in 1981. Both the boys have studied in SFS school, done engineering from Ramdeobaba College of Engineering, Masters from the USA and now working in the USA. Aashish has further done the Professional Engineering course and Anuj is working as a Research Analyst. Aashish is married to Seema, an MBA from Indore and they have an 18 month old son Aahaan. Anuj is married to his college sweetheart Suchi and they have a 4 year old boy called Vivaan. Both Manju and Chandru were very active in Jaycees before they joined Rotary. Chandru was President of Jaycees in 1979 and has organised many large scale events during his tenure. Manju was an active Jayceerette having taken part in Fashion shows and stage events. After Jaycees, Rotary was the next step for Chandru and Manju and they were introduced by Vishwas Sahasrabhojanee in 1990. Chandru was President in 2001-2002. Manju joined as a spouse member in 2007 and since then has held various posts. Both Chandru and Manju are devotees of Sadhu Vaswani mission based in Pune. They try to go at least twice a year to Pune to their guru Dada J . P. VA s w a n i . Manju feels very passionately about education of the girl child and hopes to initiate some projects on the same. She also feels that Rotary should have some kind of counselling cell for all age

groups. Manju excels at fabric painting and she divulged that she made 117 sarees and 39 salwar suits and gifted them to family and friends during her sons' wedding in 2005 !!!! She is also musically inclined and is taking formal training since the last 10 years. She is an exponent of Yoga since 1993 and practices it three times a week. She admits that her only weak point is her sense of direction and she she gets lost everytime she leaves the house without implicit directions !! In Chandru's absence she has even called her son in the US to ask for the way !!! Martha Washingtom has said ''I am determined to be cheerful in whatever situation I may find myself. For I have learnt that the greater part of misery and unhappiness is determined not by our circumstance but by our disposition'' So Manju aunty, keep smiling, keep spreading good cheer and keep calling us over to experience your culinary genius. Your definitely make the world a better place to live in. - Hetal Sampat

GEEK SPEAK

WHAT'S UP WITH FACEBOOK?

Facebook has acquired WhatsApp for $19 Billion, which is biggest tech acquisition ever, 2nd biggest (HP's Compaq acquisition comes first) if you adjust for inflation though. Brian Acton, one of the cofounders was denied a job at Facebook some years back, he went on to create WhatsApp after that and became an instant billionaire after the deal. WhatsApp is just a 5 year old company and employs only about 50 people. They haven't spent a penny in marketing but have 450 million active users and handle about 50 billion messages every day. They are soon going to support calling as well, so maybe people can now ditch both their SMS and Voice packs on their mobiles and just pay for data and use WhatsApp for both calls and SMS?

Many are questioning if the mind boggling price paid by Facebook is really worth it. Facebook Founder Mark Zuckerberg defends it by saying that WhatsApp is actually worth more than that. He points out that WhatsApp is adding 1 million new users daily and may soon cross 1 billion users. He says any service which has 1 Billion users is incredibly valuable by itself. He is quite right as even with only a few dollars per user revenue WhatsApp can become quite profitable. However there is another angle to this acquisition, some people think this is not just a good business move but actually a survival strategy, may be with a hint of desperation as well. Facebook has lost its charm, it is no longer considered cool and teens no longer use it. Instagram and WhatsApp are teen's choice for connecting with their friends and Facebook now owns both of them. So I agree that it's a good buy for Facebook and it will help them stay in game and maybe even earn big profits it they manage to monetize WhatsApp. However WhatsApp and Facebook are poles apart in their monetizing philosophies. WhatsApp doesn't do ads, stickers, games or any other such gimmicks, they have always focussed on creating the best messaging platform for everybody. WhatsApp doesn't collect user data and doesn't store anything they share on their servers. Facebook on the other hand does everything opposite to it. What's interesting is that Mark Zuckerberg has clearly said that even after the acquisition WhatApp will continue as an independent company, they get to keep their brand, their office and their product roadmap. So it will be interesting to see how WhatApp doesn't compromise on its values and still remains profitable as a company. How much WhatsApp dislikes Advertisement is pretty evident from their June 2012 blog post where they quote a dialog from the Hollywood movie, Fight Club: Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need. www.sachinpalewar.com

INTERESTING & AMUSING STORY OF ACCIDENTAL DISCOVERY OF ---

RUBIK'S CUBE Engineer, Erno Rubik, was the mastermind behind the fiendishly difficult, make-you-feel-incompetent-in-tenseconds toy known as the Rubik's Cube. Working at Budapest's Department of Interior Design in the mid 1970s, Rubik developed the cube to help his students understand 3D objects and to allow him to solve the structural problem of moving cube parts independently without dissembling the block itself. It wasn't until later when he tried to solve the scrambled cube that he realized he'd created a unique puzzle. Soon enough, Rubik filed for a patent, and today the cube is widely considered to be the world's best-selling toy and the top-selling puzzle game of all time.

SLINKY Remember the days when one of life's biggest dilemmas centered around the decision of which highpitched and humanized cartoon character you would watch on Saturday morning, and true happiness could be derived from thrusting a wobbly spring down the stairs? If it weren't for the clumsiness of one naval engineer, our childhoods may very well have lacked those sweet, metallic memories. While working on developing springs that could stabilize sensitive objects stowed on boats in 1943, naval engineer Richard James' idea for the Slinky hatched as one his springs fell. After accidentally knocking a shelved spring to the floor, James was soon consumed with an idea to make the spring move on its own. According to James' wife, Betty, when he came home that day he said, “I think if I got the right property of steel and the right tension; I could make it walk. With a $500 loan and his own inventive spirit, James developed a coil wiring machine and started his own company to mass-produce the product. It was Betty James, however, who coined the device's child-friendly and incredibly marketable name.
