VOCATIONAL VISIT
One of the important aspects of Rotary is to learn more about various vocations. These vocational visits are a combination of education and social engagement of the members. Our Club members thoroughly enjoyed the visit to Sadatan Ayurveda Pvt. Ltd. manufactures of Spa products made in Nagpur and supplied to luxury Spas in India and across the World. Rtn. Rahul Kale, the owner of Sadatan Ayurveda Pvt Ltd made sure that all of us had a good time during the visit. Our Club members had a superb opportunity to see the entire process from manufacturing

to packaging and labeling of the beauty products. Everyone was amazed at the methodology and mechanization that Sadatan Ayurveda employs. High standards are maintained regarding the cleanliness of the entire unit. We saw the making of some lotions, soaps, creams etc. and also " Bhattis " where the Ayurvedic Oils for Hair treatment, Joint Pains etc. were being prepared. Not only was it a fabulously informative vocational visit, the arrangement and the snacks were also superb. The attendance of the event was fantastic to show the enthusiasm and
eagerness amongst members and specially ladies of our club. The Ayurveda Doctor and staff of the factory patiently and enthusiastically handled all the queries. The Sadatan team said Au Revoir by giving attractive gift hampers to all the visitors. Earlier we all assembled at Hotel Krishnum, Sadar for a delicious South Indian breakfast. It was a wonderful event under Director Girish Deodhar and Chairperson Sarang Kale. And Thanks to Rtn. Rahul Kale for his hospitality - Sonal Singhvi
President’s Message Each of us can quickly perceive the agony of the blind and can understand the difficulties faced merely by closing the eyes while in action. However inspite of having perfect eyesight we still act as blind to the suffering of those around us in the society. Rotary is consistantly endeavouring to eradicate this blindness from the society and giving the vision to foresee the actions required to eliminate the disparity and spread happiness. When a Rotarian volunteers his services to provide relief, the over joyous response from the recipients is so addictive that one is prompted to indulge more and derive the satisfaction of being helpful. This attitude to empathise with those in distress pays rich devidents in every walk of life. Rotary thus becomes a religion, a way of life and no more an activity to be pursued at leisure. The joy of offering services increases manifolds when working with other Rotarians in a project and the same repeated over a period of time becomes our nature. Let us all shun the blindness and acquire this vision of identifying the opportunities to serve the society and experience the bliss and joy of giving while fostering the bonds of friendship with fellow Rotarians. With best wishes,Yours in Rotary, -Prashant Kale

Thinking Otherwise The Heat is on… You know summers have actually arrived in Nagpur when all of a sudden; every twowheeler stops before zebra crossing, under a tree shade that is 10-20 meters before the traffic signal!! One of the best things about Nagpur (apart from usual boastful stuffs like oranges, good roads & infrastructure, heart of India, Tiger capital etc.) is the month of summers. Icing on cake is of course the month of May. While few privileged ones opt to cool their heels somewhere in Europe or USA, many pack their bags for not so glamorous Indian hill stations. Not to be left behind, the Aam Aadmi (Now a days, one has to think twice and be careful while using this term, you never know when, where, how and from whom you face the heat) makes it a point to visit somewhat tolerable destination. But no matter where Nagpurians end up, they make it a point to speak highly about Nagpur weather. For them Mumbai, Chennai are too humid, Pune & Bangalore are too crowded (Conveniently forgetting that we are talking about weather here!!) It gives us altogether a different 'high' to talk about fames Nagpur summers. (It was joy to see astonishment on the faces of my Swedish friends when I talked about Nagpur temperature while wearing thermal, pullover, and overcoat during GSE in the month of April/May) In fact I have a friend who while 'enlightening' visitor on Nagpur temperature makes it a point to inform that even though the temperature is 'only' 45 degrees, it is actually above 50 degrees on deserted asphalt road at 2 in the noon. Ohhh…that look on the face of visitor. It is 'something that money can't buy' moment. A MasterCard moment. Priceless!!! Though El Nino and some 'western disturbances' keep playing spoilsports once in a while, I am glad the good, old Nagpur summer is here. Enjoy till it lasts. Coolers, ice creams, swimming and mango…Have fun!! What???? Alphanso is Rs.650/- a dozen!! Seriously, I tell you these Bombay Pune people….. -Parag Paranjpe

INSIGHTS INTO THE MIND OF A CRIMINAL
Schizophrenia, Kleptomania, Genetic Disorders (xyy chromosomes), Anti Social Personalities are the various psychological aspects that are attributed for CRIME. The Criminal Mind is generally acquired at birth. External circumstances do add to it but in most cases it just comes to you by default. Dr. Salim Mujawar, retired MD of Central Prisons & Superintendent of Mental Health Hospital, cited a number of actual case histories of
some of the history sheeters. Rehabilitation in such cases is almost impossible he said. Since they do not have a stable mind, they DO NOT have any guilt or repentance of the crimes they have committed. Thus, they do not even attempt to hide their crimes generally. The Super Male Ego in them gets a boost & even murder is just an act, like any other, for them. The jails are always full. Sometimes it is convenient for these criminals to be imprisoned, specially the brown sugar addicts. Rs.1000/- a day is the average expense that such addicts have to incur. Petty thefts are the cause for this in most cases. The police, when they catch them, have to give them a dose or two, till the jail authorities start on an anti addiction program. Rains, terminal diseases, pregnancies are other causes
which bring the criminals to jail, of their own accord. Life is simpler & easier for them in the prison, where they are at least ensured of 2 square meals a day. The situation sure is grim. With little that society can do about. Program Chair Rita Agrawal introduced Dr. Mujawar as a man with a soft demeanor but a tough mind. Earlier 3 new members were inducted & an informative evening was spent. - Manju Shahani

SKIN QUOTIENT, AGEING AND ITS REMEDIES
‘Ageing starts the moment you are born. The skin, the largest organ of the human body gets exposed to environmental factors such as the sun, the pollutants and others allergens that affect the skin negatively. The internal environment such as your diet and nutrition also affect the quality of your skin', said Professor Farhat Daud of the department of cosmetology of LAD college in her address to the Club on the 24 April 2014. In her elegant and simple conversational style she explained the basics of skin through her power point presentation. Her topic titled “Skin quotient
and You”, explained the various types of skin people possess and it's need for rejuvenation through cleansing and moisturizing. She however warned against the abuse of cosmetics while emphasising its proper use. The use of 'sun protection' lotions are important while exposing the skin to the glaring sun. But surprisingly the dark colour skin had intrinsic self protecting agents while the white skin needed lotions and all. So we had advantages for the dark skin that scored over the fair skin. She also said that men's skin was some percentage thicker than the skin of
women (that explained the stubborn streak in men!). Facial yoga was important to maintain good health of the face and the neck skin and she showed 5 poses of the face that needed to be done daily. The talk was informative, enjoyable and lucid in highlighting the important aspects of skin care. It was followed by a lively interaction. She was introduced by Rtn Beena Mathew and the vote of thanks was delivered by Rita Aggarwal. - Rita Aggarwal

ON THE BOARD The man in white !! For that is the attire I have seen him in the most..I have yet to come across a couple who is so affectionate and caring towards each other even 36 years after their marriage. Meet the treasurer of the club, who is a treasure in himself...Senior Rotarian Bharat Parikh and his doting wife Pushpa Parikh. Bharatbhai, is a second generation Nagpurian, whose father moved to the city when he was offered the distributorship of pharma products of a U.S based company Eli Lilly and Co. He was then a Senior chemist with Cadburys and Kemp and Co. But he left it all to settle in what was then the land of tribals and snakes, Nagpur. So he shifted to Nagpur in 1946 and 'Rajkumar Agencies'started functioning on Independence day in 1947. Bharatbhai was born in 1950. He is the second of four brothers and sisters, 2 settled in the US and the youngest Neena Parikh, in Nagpur and a member of our club. A product of SFS school, he has vivid memories of constantly being the centre of attention for his 'Masti ' . He represented the school in games like Cricket, Football, Hockey etc. He also participated in gymnastics in Thailand in 1962 and 1963. This was way before the tourism boom hit Thailand and he remembers that the airport at Bangkok was just one room!! He cleared his matriculation in 1966 and Joined SFS College to pursue BSc. Before he could Graduate, he passed the 17th SSB (Service Selection Board), Meerut, of the Army. He also cleared the 21st SSB at Banaras which was a tough exam, its Medical itself was for seven days. He qualified as a GDP (General Duty Pilot) & PABT ( Pilot Aptitude & Battery Test) and started training to be a fighter pilot when he was called back to Nagpur to take reins of the family business. On his return to Nagpur he completed graduation and post graduation from Hislop college. He met Pushpa at a common friends' wedding in Jabalpur in 1974. He also took up agencies for office automation products, In 1999 he was selected by HPCL as C&F Agent for their Industrial Lubricants for Central India, his current involvement under the name Rajkumar AG. The foremost importance Pushpa & he hold in life is imparting high traditional values & the best of Education to their Children. This they implemented with full zeal & resources. Pushpa sacrificed her Medical Career to a great extent and devoted her full attention to bringing up the children & keeping the family harmony. Their first son, Aditya was born in 1982. Aditya did his schooling from BVM, Civil Lines, BCom from Centre Point College and has studied Masters in Professional Accountancy from Monash University, Melbourne. However the progress and development of his children are really God's gifts. The family truly believes that good education is the greatest boon for a successful life and nobody can earn take away the same from you. Bharatbhai is a voracious reader. He also plays Golf 6 days a week. Pushpa, has studied Russian acupuncture and ''Sujog'' and practices the same. Bharatbhai feels that Pushpa is a blessing in his life, totally supportive, very expressive, caring and a good cook. Pushpa on the other hand laments that he is too straightforward but appreciates that he has always given her freedom to do as she desires and full support in her endeavours. Again, Bharatbhai is a second generation Rotarian who became a Paul Harris fellow even before he officially joined Rotary. He feels that the club functions like well oiled machinery and the members are self motivated. As Lao Tzu has said 'Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, whereas loving someone deeply gives you courage'. So Bharatbhai with this top up of strength and courage may you scale great heights !! May your tribe increase!! - Hetal Sampat
VICE PRESIDENT – SOHRAB KANGA What a personality !! Can never forget his 'Shah Rukh Khan' Act at the Charter Nite couple of years back. Just a meeting is enough to create an impression of a suave, well read, deep thinking, opinionated individual with a typical Parsi twang. And he is tall with movie star looks to boot !! Meet Vice – President Sohrab Kanga and his petite better half Mamta. We met over a meal of Dhansaak and Lagan nu custard on a warm summer evening at their delightful residence at Byramji Town. Mamta makes the best Dhansaak in town. Even the most stringent Parsis acknowledge that. And that is a commendable achievement for this UP Khatri girl. As you talk to her you realise that she is more aware about Parsi cuisine and culture than most born Parsis are. Sohrab was born in Nagpur, at his maternal grandparents hometown. His father was a Dastoor i.e. Parsi priest at Belgaum and his family was settled there. He did his early schooling at Tata Parsi School till Std 4 as boys were only admitted in pre-primary and primary. He then was transferred to St. Johns School and from there to Belgaum to complete his matriculation. He again came back to Nagpur and finished his graduation in Commerce from GS College. Being of a creative bent, he joined 'Shells advertising' and was with them for almost 6 years. He took a break and even worked for a year in Mumbai and was involved in the National Brand Launch of Monaco and Kelvinator. But this small town lad found Mumbai too fast paced and he shifted back to Nagpur. It was in Shells that he met Mamta. Good things come in small packages and Mamta is just that and a bundle of enthusiasm to boot. They were married in 1995 after strong opposition from her family. Being an only child, they were concerned about her going to another community. But all's well that ends well and now Mamta's father resides with them and is a pillar of support to her. Being a pure vegetarian Mamta not only learned how to cook typical Parsi Non
veg delicacies but she now relishes them as well. She is very active in the Parsi Community in Nagpur whereas Sohrab is the captain of the Nagpur Parsi Gymkhana Cricket team. Sohrab is passionate about cricket and lives and breathes it. Their daughter Meher was born in 2000 and is a very talented artist. She has her mother's good looks and father's amazing personality !! She is in Class 9 at Modern School, Koradi. All the balconies in their home are full of plants including pudina, narangi, lemon, tulsi, pomegranate and lots of flowering plants and Mamta tends to them herself. The other joy of their lives is their dog 'Magic', a quiet (even though he makes it a point to bark at the owners), loving and well behaved dachshund. Sohrab now runs 'Ahura Design Initiative' a boutique firm specialising in Brand Identity, packaging, promotions etc. Mamta runs 'Ahura events' and organises all kinds of events like parties, weddings and corporate events. Sohrab was designing for Rotary long before he became Rotarian. Becoming a m em ber was a natural progression and he was introduced by Rtn Shiraz Gimi. He finds that most Rotarians are selfless when it comes to serving the club and the Rotary movement has mobilised such talented people who are on the top of their profession. Mamta feels that S o h r a b i s
ON THE BOARD straightforward but stubborn. She has got more freedom and space after marriage and she really appreciates that. She feels that Sohrab's potential is still untapped and he has a long way to go. Sohrab on the other hand feels Mamta is too laidback, also that she sees the world in black and white and there are no greys for her. She also should get full credit for raising and disciplining meher and encouraging her painting talent. It is said that ' The truth is you don't know what's going to happen tomorrow. Life is a crazy ride and nothing is guaranteed.' This cute close knit 'bawa' family is surely enjoying this crazy ride called life and we are sure lucky to be part of it!! - Hetal Sampat

LUNCH WITH THE INMATES OF PANCHVATI ASHRAM
It was a hot Monday noon and being a holiday, we got the road to the Panchvati ashram very clear. A very clean and serene area but a sense of gloom could be felt at the 75 inmates of the ashram. An eye of a mother, an eye of the father hoping that some day they shall be taken home by their children. We reached at 12noon and exactly at 12:30 pm a bell rang and slowly we saw the inmates gathering at their dining hall. Some inmates were found cheerful, as they had kept themselves busy in activities like making malas and bracelets. We also purchased quite a few to appreciate their efforts. We at Rotary club of Nagpur are grateful to Mulani brothers, Rtn Hira Mulani and Rtn Rajan Mulani who with their entire family were present at the ashram and had sponsored the lunch. They also generously distributed sarees and kurta pyjamas

for the inmates as well as the staff of the ashram. President Prashant Kale, Secretary Sunil Bhatia, Rtn Sharad and Pushpa Bhave, PP Rajan Bhatia, Rtn Vishal Bhatia Chairperson Senior citizen committee Neeru Bhatia and Padma Mahant were actively present. In our visit as I already mentioned, the experience has been that inmates who were busy, were the happier lot. We realized, that they need to be trained in a manner so that they can make use their time productively and involve in some kind of activity that will make them happier and busier. The time was well spent in the company of senior citizens. The officials at Ashram as well as beneficiaries both appreciated the work of Rotary. - Rakhi Bhatia

BOBBY'S BUBBLES In July 2001, the number of female Rotarians was 1,01,726 and the number of male was 10,68,775. The number of total Rotarians was 11,70,501 at that time. (The percentage of female Rotarians was 8.69% of the total) In early March 2014, the number of female Rotarians was 2,33,955 and the number of male was 9,71,932. The number of total Rotarians was 1,205,887. So, the female Rotarians are now about 19.40% of the total. In last 12½ years, the number of female Rotarians has increased by 1,32,229. By this time, the number of male

members has seen decrease of 96,843. It is obviously encouraging and a good sign that woman members are increasing rapidly. They enjoy Rotary's all occasions with enthusiasm, acquaintance and cheerfulness. Programmes like Installations, DG visit, Assembly, Conference, any Rotary gatherings are more attractive than ever before because of the extreme support and cooperation of female Rotarians. They enjoy strong fellowship with hilarious and affectionate manner. Dedicated women are fond of service; they are more devoted to humanitarian works. They know that
a smiley face is the way to solve many problems. Lady members are needed in parallel with their male counterparts to assist in all projects including humane service. Each year we loose more male members than we gain. We have to find out ways to retain male members; otherwise, after another centennial, it will be difficult to find male members to appreciate, cooperate and assist female Rotary leadership. MOVING DOCTOR'S OFFICE RESCUES WOMEN FROM BREAST CANCER
Maryland, USA, Rotary members Christopher Puttock and Rachel Blair (left), pay a visit to the Mammobus last year to check on the project's status. With them are Dr. K.N. Srinivasan (far right) and Mrs. Vijayalakshmi, who coordinates the bus's schedule for the K Shantha Breast Cancer Foundation. In Tamil Nadu, India, two doctors, both members of the Rotary Club of Srirangam, discovered an alarming trend in the remote city outskirts of Trichy, women dying of breast cancer. Drs. K. Govindaraj and K.N. Srinivasan knew that much of the death and suffering could be avoided, and both were motivated by their personal experiences with the disease. Govindaraj watched his mother die of breast cancer a decade earlier, and helped found the Dr. K. Shantha Breast Cancer Foundation in her memory. Srinivasan, an oncologist, witnessed unprecedented growth in the number of younger patients coming to his clinic with advanced stages of the disease. According to the National Cancer Registry of India, 20 to 40 women per 100,000 are suffering from breast cancer. And because many women lack the resources to travel to the city, or the$50 fee for proper screening , the doctors needed a unique approach. During a trip to South Korea, Govindaraj saw a large van outfitted with X-ray equipment parked outside a mall, and thought a moving doctor's office and lab -- or “mammobus” -- could overcome the challenges they faced. Through a Rotary global grant, the men were able to buy and outfit their own bus. Since April 2012 the Shantha Foundation's mammobus, supported by local Rotarians and the Rotary Club of Rockville, Maryland, USA, has

administered 2,500 free breast cancer screenings. Early stage cancer has been detected and treated in six women, and thousands have been taught how to conduct regular self-exams, an important means of early detection. “Women have started feeling that they have easy access to health without compromising their day-to-day work and earnings,” Srinivasan says. “Women come out to our health workers with their health-related problems and discuss freely about various aspects of health and diseases, not just about breast cancer.'' The mammobus cost $34,000 and is equipped with a mammography machine, an ultra sonogram, and materials that teach the method and importance of self-exams. The Shantha Foundation maintains the vehicle and reaches out to nongovernmental organizations, women's groups, and employers to arrange visits. The bus stops anywhere a large group of women congregate, with priority given to rural areas. The Srirangam club also helps line up visits and widely promotes the bus through various media. “More and more clubs and NGOs want to participate and are booking the mammobus well in advance,” says Srinivasan. “We are already booked until the end of May.” Govindaraj says if something is detected during screening, the woman is given the choice to get a biopsy at the Shantha Foundation's affiliated hospital, or to have the foundation arrange a biopsy with a local radiologist. If a biopsy proves malignant, the woman is advised to undergo treatment in a hospital in her own city or, if willing, to receive treatment at the Shantha Foundation hospital. Either way, the procedure is covered by
government insurance. The foundation provides follow-up support and counseling for patients and families. Dr. Chenguttai Dheenan, a retired surgeon and member of the Rotary Club of Rockville, Maryland, USA, became involved in the project after he met a member from Tamil Nadu at Rotary's international convention. In addition to convincing his club to support the project, Dheenan, a lifelong member of the American Tamil Medical Association, secured a $5,000 donation from the association. “In many cases, this will be the first doctor these women have seen,” says Dheenan. “This venture is bringing life-saving detection right to their doorsteps.” Rotary members have also been lining up volunteers to ride on the bus and talk to the women about HIV/AIDS awareness and other health issues. Meanwhile, the doctors have been gathering medical data that will benefit universities in India and other countries, data that up to this point had not been available. “I wish and pray for many more mammobus in our country,” says Srinivasan. “Healthy women are the backbone of a community.” - Arnold R. TRAVEL BUG
I had planned to write about my wild escapades in the US, many years back when I'd gone with family in toe, but am told to support with digital snaps! Unfortunately that was a deal breaker, as then there were no digital camera's and dad had processed some 30 odd rolls of film in that 30 days trip and even by mistake used the same roll twice. Still as they say “Some Memories Never Fade”, that journey is etched in my mind till today. But then that's what Vacations and travel are for, they are supposed to create Memories for you from all around the world. On my trip to Turkey, we visited a place known as Antalya, located on the Mediterranean coast and considered as Turkey's largest sea resort. An amazing combination of sun, sand, deep blue seas, mountains and history. A lot of people give it a miss, but would definitely suggest going. I stayed at a place called The Marmara, lovely property overlooking the sea with awesome views, massive gardens and the most

ANTALYA – IF ONLY FOR THE AZURE WATERS!
interesting bit is the deck 6 stories down from the hotel level through the cliff to the waters, and they have a diving centre there. Never one to let go of the opportunity, did go for a diving session and found it pretty interesting, I would guess most people could manage it quite easily with the help of the experienced divers. Antalya is considered one of the many hot spots for diving enthusiasts with more than 25 diving sites giving access to a wide variety of sea life and ruins as well. On the visit of the old town of Anatalya we happened upon a huge old covered market and if you've read my earlier articles, you would realize by now, I completely got lost in the cobbled lanes. Small quaint shops with beautiful artefacts and glass work, lots of curios to pick up and cozy hidden restaurants between the buildings. After getting an overdose of nostalgia and walking quite a bit up and down the lanes, we happened to come to the dock where a lot of hue and cry was on by the cruise ships to get
customers. Though it somehow didn't seem enticing enough at the time and gave it a miss. We visited the Duden Waterfalls but being a short trip couldn't do the rafting at the Koprulu Canyon national Park. Antalya has some amazing beaches along it huge length of over 640kms, the Olympus, Lara, Patara being the longest one. The city does have a vibrant nightlife, though personally not much of interest to me, I rather spend the beautiful evenings on the cliff side enjoying the traditional Turkish music and cuisine, one of the tastiest I've had for vegetarians after Lebanese food, a speciality being their local Turkish pizza – though I had that in Istanbul and not at The Marmara it was a true delight ! I couldn't help thinking why it wasn't offered in Pizza Chains across the world. A short trip to a mesmerising destination, one more memory to treasure. - Farzana Haque
GEEK SPEAK
HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF ON INTERNET
Websites are racing to protect themselves from the Heart Bleed bug (www.heartbleed.com). Heart bleed is probably one of the largest security exposures, in ten or fifteen years. It impacts almost all of the internet. David Kennedy, a security researcher and self described ethical hacker calls heart bleed the bug that broke the internet. "Everybody was affected by this, Facebook was affected, Yahoo was affected, a number of companies we put our information into every day were affected." And while companies have worked to fix it, the security flaw is untraceable, making it difficult to tell if you've been compromised. "If you're using the internet for any purpose, there will be an effect." Robert Hansen, also an ethical hacker, says don't use the same password for different sites. "In light of heart bleed, probably the first thing you should do is go to a search engine and type in heart bleed check. And if you're going to do business with a website, type in that website's name into that form and see whether it is or isn't vulnerable to heart bleed." How to keep yourself safe? "There's things like two factor authentication, things that allow you to have to enter a password and then something else. For example, Gmail has this built in automatically." David further says “I don't actually know any of my passwords inside of my head. I only know one password. My passwords are literally between 32 and 50 characters long. They're completely unique to where you're never going to be able to guess them. Kennedy keeps his passwords stored in something called a password vault -- programs like keypass and one pass for mac are built for this.” Passwords themselves are pretty much a legacy of old way of thinking. We need to move to other technologies, for instance biometrics is a great one. It's definitely possible from a technology perspective to say 'hey I want to log into Gmail,' swipe your finger, verifies who you are and now you're logged into Gmail, not have to remember passwords and it's tied to this. The Iphone 5S and the Galaxy S5 now have fingerprint scanners but both systems have been beaten by hackers. More advanced biometrics could provide greater security, things like identity by voice or even your heartbeat. For now, the internet remains vulnerable and the ones who know it best, take extreme precautions. "I'm always in private mode which means that when I close my browser, the cache and cookies are removed. All ads are removed. All tracking systems are disabled / the list goes on and on."
