MATCHING GRANT PROJECTS
COMPLETION OF WATER CONSERVATION PROJECT
The Matching Grant Water Reservoir Project was dedicated to the public of Girad and surrounding villages on 23rd August 2011. This project was started in May and has been completed in a record time of 3 months. This massive project was executed with the help of our partners in service, Magan Sanghralaya, Wardha, under the able leadership of Vibha Gupta. Our partners in service from across the oceans, through the able networking and untiring efforts of Rtn.Catherine Baird from Rotary Club of Pataskala Dist. 6690 were Rotary Club of Pataskala, Rotary Club of Whitehall Bexley, Rotary Club of Grove City and Rotary Club of Delaware – all from District 6690. I would fail in my duty if I did not recognize the efforts and support of PDG Late Atmaram Gawande of Dist. 6690. This project has been dedicated to the Society at large in his absence. It was his perseverance that saw this project through. The villagers, Gram Panchayat of Girad and school children from all the surrounding villages were in a jubilant mood on this occasion. Tree plantation, prayers and pooja were done on the banks of the reservoir. There was a grand function arranged on the banks of the reservoir, where all those who participated in the project were recognized and felicitated. In addition to the actual project of the creation of the water reservoir, the value added service were the re creation of the many wells and roads in and around the reservoir and in the village with the excavated mud. This has brought in an order and structure to the village and made life easy for all. To ensure that there is no water logging in the village, huge cement pipes supported by sand bags were placed at different places. The villagers felicitated the Rotarians and members of Magan Sanghralaya. Present on the occasion were PP Dr. Manmohan Daga - Project Coordinator, IPP Ganesh Joshi, President Tauby Bhagwagar, PP Vijay Naidu, PDG Vshwas Sahasrabhojanee, Asst. Governor PP Gulab Mahant, Director Nisreen Maimoon and Deepa Jamwal Dr.Manmohan Daga

All smiles after a successfully completed op
Tauby's Take.... Dear Rotarians, It has been two wonderful months for me. I trust you are enjoying the Rotary experience as much as I have been. It's your participation and involvement which propels this club. I wish to see more of you participating in our projects and other activities. The month of August is designated by RI as Membership and Extension month. The Club's membership growth as well as retention has been good and that's a positive sign. But I am of the view that membership growth should not only be quantitative but qualitative as well. We should ensure exposure and comprehensive visibility to our new members. I want members to be innovative and forward thinking. We should have a leadership plan to promote orderly growth and development of members. We need to groom and have conceptualizers, developers and executors. The various blood donation camps continued unabated and the Slum Development and Micro Credit committees started with their activities. The Hawaiian Nite was a great success with members and their families bonding and renewing friendships. Fellowship is that glue which binds us together while increasing our appetite to serve. On the 23rd, we were present at the Water Reservoir Project which was dedicated to the Public of Girad and surrounding villages. This Matching Grant project through the able networking of Rtn.Catherine Baird from Rotary Club of Pataskala Dist. 6690 was started in May 2011 and has been completed in a record time of 3 months The country has been witnessing unprecedented support and public upsurge to the anti corruption movement led by Anna Hazare. As Rotarians, we support any effort which addresses this serious menace that our country faces. Even those who disagree with the form of Annas protest, cannot but agree with the cause. The Government agreeing to refer the Jan Lok Pal Bill to the standing committee of parliament is a step forward. But, the fight seems far from over and we all need to preserve our energies for the long road ahead on this struggle. Wishes for Id, Navroze, and the Ganesha festival. As the lord of all auspicious beginnings, may He bring to each home of ours, good luck, happiness and prosperity. Yours in Rotary Tauby Bhagwagar
Straight from the heart.... GOSSIP………….. This is one thing which holds groups together. It makes parties vibrant, longer lasting and long remembered. At times the heart and soul of a gathering. Some spread it, some listen to it and some revel in it. Since gossip is not about situations or occasions or issues, but about people, it needs to be put into perspective. It needs to be deliberated as to what kind of gossip (and about whom) is acceptable and what is not. Parents (read elders) are above board. They cannot be a subject of any talk which is derogatory or frivolous in nature. They need to be kept out of any such conversation. Children (read youngsters) are sacrosanct. They should not and cannot be a part of any campaign which can adversely affect lives. They are best kept out of and away from this menace. That narrows down our subjects of discussion (????) to people of our own generation. They may be friends, enemies or neither. For friends, we would go to any extent to defend, leave alone malign. The ones who are 'neither' are our potential friends. How can we jeopardize future possible friendships by regaling in small talk? We always have to be alive to this possibility. That leaves enemies!!! But then, if they fall in that category, are they even worth talking about?? It's then best to narrow down our discussions to topics such as cinema, film stars, politicians, corruption, economy, art, travel, fiction,………….. the list is endless. Revel in disagreements!! Parties will continue to be interesting and will last till the wee hours of morning………….. Happy Discussions!!!!! Shabbir Shakir
Keep in touch...... We invite expert comments, suggestions, criticism and commendations. This will help us know the pulse of readers and improve the publication. Please write in to shabbir.shakir66@yahoo.in

MAIL BASTION - Letters To The Editor
ETTER BEST L FOR E IZ R P ISSUE EVERY
Hi folks and dear Rotarian's from the Rotary Club of Nagpur. It's just about a month since we left Nagpur for the U.S. We are already smitten with Home Thoughts From Abroad! We miss you all and look forward to be in your midst soon about the middle of next month. Bobby Srinivas 2133 Evergreen Drive Wilmington MA 01887 USA Tel. 1-978-447-1943
Hi, GO TEAM, Thumbs up! for the fresh look of the magazine with the feisty president adorning the cover in a communicating mood. The new roster, the weekly circulars - all have got that fresh tinge. Cannot go unnoticed. Going through the August annals, the editorial corner has done a mtv roadies Raghu style to grab the eyeballs of the reader with its hit the bull's eye approach unlike the subtle or at the most satirical hue of past editors. This piece masterly penned by Shabbir was innovatingly indictive to the ignoring fellow dormant Rotarians. Keep it up! TheTRPS would go high! But then, how do you ignore anything or anybody when you celebrate or rather revel in this very so called ignoring thought in the editorial itself. When this self draining thought has already caught one's fancy so powerfully how can one claim to have ignored a person? Feeling detached & neutral can be called ignoring maybe. Try to overpower the thought itself, till then one is ignorant of ignoring anything or anyone. Hope this reply doesn't get ignored as I have not ignored the column. All my good wishes. -Beena Mathew
BE For God's sake………you will not be ignored!!!!! R LETTE Dear Shabbir, What can I say……. the new Golden Orange is truly FANTASTIC. The layout, the content, the colours, the presentation, the creative inputs, the pictures ... you have put in a lot of effort & it shows. Would I sound too biased if I say that you got a Smasher of a Cover Girl ... truly beautiful, poised, elegant & supremely confident. Be rest assured that this year the Editor & the GO will certainly not be ignored. By God!! The Club is judged by a few yard sticks... the number of projects held, blood units collected, PHFs & Major donors added etc. If a few important statistics are presented in concise, it would make interesting reading. Think about it. Congratulations & all the very best. We all will now be looking forward to our monthly GO issues most eagerly. -Naushad Bhagwagar
Dear Shabbir, Considering the consistent excellence of the Golden Orange over the years, I would have thought that it would be impossible to UP the ANTE on something that hardly requires improvement. However, I must admit, that you have managed to make some interesting changes that reflect well on the overall quality of the magazine. Firstly the slim horizontal Columns with bold headlines highlighting all the various projects, with pictorial backing, are easy to skim through and absorb.
The introduction of 'EXPRESS' a forum for Rotarians to air their views and grievances IN WRITING is excellent. It is also heartening to see a more democratic distribution of colour pages regarding Rotarian contributions, whether they are through the written word, directorship, chairmanship, or support by way of physical presence at any activity pertaining to Rotary. I enjoyed your Free Frank and Fearless first editorial ,Shabbir :-)). but alongside I must share with you another diktat that I strongly believe in :- that discretion is the better part of valour! A BIG CONGRATS for a wonderful start !!! -Vindhya
Dear Shabbir, X-Press, for technically challenged, Nagpur (K)now, Celeb Speak, Get Onboard, I could mention them all. The columns were well written and more than anything, well named. It was a pleasure to go through the magazine. The first issue of The Golden Orange is always awaited with excitement. This issue has increased that excitement and we are anxiously waiting for more. Madhavi, Vindhya, Naushad always are a pleasure to read but Jyoti's writing, at least, I was missing these past few years. Tauby's Take was very effective but the icing on the cake was 'Straight from the heart'. And even if I had not known who the editor was, I would know it was you, as only you can write like that and get away with it. Thoroughly enjoyed the tongue in cheek style. One more portfolio that you have handled as no one else can. -Manju Shahani

Dear Rtn. Pres. Tauby Bhagwagar, Congratulations on taking over as the first lady president of Rotary Club of Nagpur. Thank you for putting me on the mailing list of “Golden Orange” your club magazine. I have admired your magazine for its excellent content and get up for the last few years. It looks like a Governors Monthly Letter and not like a Rotary Club bulletin. Please congratulate the editor Rtn Shabbir Shakir and hope he will keep up the excellent quality of the magazine. Good luck to you and your board to have an excellent year of Rotary service & fellowship. I am sure you will be a very successful and great president for your illustrious club. Dear Shabbir, Congratulations! The first issue of GO is excellent. In fact I am sending you this mail because it was my son Raunaq who mentioned that the GO has an eye catching cover, probably referring to his Tauby aunty :-). He was involved with the Bulletin committee of his college and thus went through the complete magazine and commented that the page layouts were very good which made reading a pleasure. Keep up the good work! This has brought out one more facet of your talent and ability!! Regards, -Atul Shah

LET'S LIGHT UP SOME LIVES
REGULAR MEETINGS
Mr Yatendra Agrawal
WE CANNOT ALWAYS DO GREAT THINGS. BUT WE CAN ALWAYS DO SMALL THINGS WITH GREAT LOVE!!! These words of Mother Teresa seem so true, when we see some good happening in the world. And this was how we all felt when we heard our guest speaker, Mr. Yatendra Agrawal from Mumbai, at the Regular Meeting on 11th August. An IITian from Powai, Mumbai, Mr Agrawal,
has taken it upon himself to bring light into the lives of the rural population of India. The government is supposed to have done that but even the outskirts of Mumbai are still in darkness. Most of the villages in the vicinity of Wild Life Parks also face a dark and bleak future. Mr Agrawal has the franchise for China made SOLAR LIGHTS, which he gives to villagers. A Rs.850/- worth, LED light is sold to the villagers anywhere from Rs.200/- to Rs.20/- or even given free of cost, depending on the financial status of the buyer. Complete with a Solar Panel, the unit is charged during the day with sunlight and used in the evening for as many as 16 hrs. With a reasonably long life of 3-5 yrs., these lights have changed the lives of many. Earlier Project incharge Shiraz Doongaji,
introduced to us, families of people, who have made a tremendous difference to the society, by donating their eyes after death. 3 of such noble families were given, certificates of appreciation from the club. The visiting speaker was introduced by Vipul Gupta and the Vote of Thanks was given by Alok Goenka. PP Dr. Manmohan Daga spoke a few words in memory of PDG Ram Gavande of Dist.6690 who has been a partner in quite a few of our Matching Grant Projects. -Manju Shahani

ENERGY SECURITY SCENARIO IN OUR COUNTRY K C VIjh, Ex CMD of Western Coal Fields Ltd and our longstanding member, delivered a talk at the Club's Regular Meeting on 18th August. A heavy and serious subject “Energy Security Scenario in Our Country was lightly explained and made interesting. Coal remains the fuel which propels more than 60% of the energy requirements of our country. K C Vijh is an expert in the coal mining sector with an indepth knowledge on the subject. Having headed one of the largest coal producing companies in the Public Sector, he provided an insider's view of the opportunities and challenges in the sector. With the increasing awareness on environmental concerns, issues relating to land acquisition, governmental clearances and forest diversions, the country and the world has to look for reducing its dependence on fossil fuels and develop cleaner technologies. Mr Vijh took us through few alternate
technologies like offshore and sea bed fuels, tapping the methane and other underground gasses which would, in the future be our source of energy. Nuclear energy is wrongly perceived as unsafe and with the fourth generation reactors, which are extremely safe and reliable, this would emerge as a vital source of energy which is clean and does not harm the earth resources Bharat Goenka introduced the unassuming and soft-spoken Rtn Vijh & surprised the

members with his long list of qualifications, vast experience and eminence in the industry. The talk was followed by an interesting question answer session. Naushad Bhagwagar proposed the vote of thanks. -Naushad Bhagwagar

REGULAR MEETINGS
PANEL DISCUSSION A panel discussion was planned for the regular meeting of Thursday 25th August 2011 titled “India is a society of the corrupt and heartless in terminal moral decay”. The panelists were PDG Dr. Satish Sule, Amitabh Sinha, Sohrab Kanga, Khushnoor Chugh, Gagan Sial & Sapna Vastani, with the moderator being PP Shabbir Shakir. Considering that corruption in India is a hot topic these days, we had a packed hall, with people interacting and taking active part in the discussion. When asked, Dr. Sule was of the opinion that corruption is like a plague which has spread to all sectors of life and that our Governing system has degraded itself drastically. He stated that as per Transparency International,
The audience is amused....
th
our country is the 7 most corrupt in the world with bribes to the tune of Rs. 26000 crores changing hands annually. Khushnoor was asked to voice her opinion on the reason why people become corrupt. She stated that greed, poverty and ambition were the prime factors. Failing family values were also to be blamed because although children are told to be truthful and honest they see their parents behaving dishonestly for getting their work done. Sapna Vastani too was of the opinion that failing moral values and our education system was leading to this moral decay. Sohrab was asked about the effect of the Anna Hazare crusade. He opined that anything attempted for the good of the people was a good thing, and said that though it was good it had some flaws like not covering election funding which is one of the root causes of corruption. Amitabh was asked to opine measures to check corruption and he agreed that electoral reform
SEMINAR ON THRUST AREAS HOSTED BY ROTARY CLUB OF CHANDA FORT After lighting of the traditional lamp by the dignitaries, The forum was called to order. All the present were welcomed by President of Chanda Fort Naresh Sharma. The gathering was addressed by DG Gopal Shiralkar and then by the keynote Speaker PDG Shashi Vervandkar. He, in his unusual but attractive style emphasised on Rotary principals and the thrust areas, praising the remarkable work done by Rotarians of various clubs in Dist 3030, with a specific mention of Hemalkasa Camp & the project of making drinking water available to Wild Animals of Tadoba. Presentations on Club Projects was done by
Two clubs i.e. Rotary Club of Nagpur and Rotary club of Nagpur Ishanya. Rtn. Raju Wilkinson had made an Audio Visual Presentation on our Clubs Flagship Project, The Annual Hemalkasa Surgical Camp. He highlighted various aspects of the project which are true to the Rotary Principals like Surgical operations ranging from Ophthalmic, Dental, Hernia, Tumors, Hydrocele etc. It was also emphasised that other social work like free langar to those attending the patients, Sport activities and vocational training for the inmates and students of Ashram school, Film shows, Free distribution of books, school bags, Pencil & compass boxes, uniforms,
was the need of the hour. Transparency in taxdeductible funding by corporates to political parties could be an option. He also opined that bodies like CBI & CID should be independent. Better salaries for lower bureaucracy will help in removing greed. Gagan as asked whether he thought that families of honest people suffer and he agreed that the supreme sacrifice is indeed made by the family whose leader is non-corrupt and the family loses its competitive edge in today's scenario. A lot of people among the audience got into the discussion making it very interesting and thought-provoking. Everyone opined that though the scenario looked dark, there was “light at the end of the tunnel” as Sohrab put it. -Mamta Kanga

Nisreen Maimoon
As a matter of convenience and due to paucity of time, mothers these days shift to bottle milk as a substitute for breast milk. To popularise breast feeding, Slum Development Committee organised a talk on the benefits of breast milk by Nisreen Maimoon in Aadivasi Nagar slums on 11th August and Marium Nagar slums on 12th August. A gathering of more than 35 married and unmarried women were present for the occasion. Nisreen Maimoon very aptly explained the importance of mother's milk and its nutritive values. Suckling is natural by birth and mother's milk is best for a child's health,
which apart from mother's love and affection gives immunity, specially from colostrum-first milk produced, psychological security, higher intelligence, orthodontic benefits and a good digestion ability to the new born. Various doubts and myths were cleared and queries were answered. The program was a grand success in motivating and encouraging the women folk about their rights and duties as a mother towards their new born. The talk was followed by a workshop on making paper bags in both the slums. Mita Joglekar and Sadhna Paliwal gave a demonstration for making paper packets from

BLOOD DONATION CAMPS
th
INDEPENDENCE DAY 15 August 2011
The spirit of 'Independence day' was evident….The fervour of patriotism was equally visible…. and was also clearly demonstrated at both the blood donation camps conducted on 15th August 2011, details of which are as follows: 1. G.H. Raisoni Institute of Engineering & Technology: The venue was perfect…. the arrangements were superb…. the teachers were motivating…. and the students were forthcoming. The camp, which started at 8 'O clock in the morning, was a grand success. Raisoni College has been associated with our club since long and has always been instrumental in contributing to blood donation as well. One feature of this camp was that a lot of participants were first time donors. This would not have been possible without concerted efforts at increasing awareness among students and the incessant personal encouragement on the part of their faculty. The total collection at this camp was 92 units of blood. We are especially thankful to Prof. Rajashree Gupta, from Mathematics department, for mobilizing and encouraging the students. 2. SARSO Goodness Foundation: This is one of our landmark blood donation camps, which has become an annual affair for our club now. This is a multi-level marketing company with an all-India presence. The camp was conducted under the aegis of their social service division, SARSO Goodness Foundation. The camp began at 11 'O clock in the morning. The donors awaited the arrival of their charismatic leader, the Vice President of the organization, Mr. Amrit Pal Singh Sondhi. He is the 13th descendent of Guru Ramdasji and also has the honour of featuring in 'India Today', recently, as a social entrepreneur who has helped transform innumerable lives. For the members of this organization, he is a demigod. The arrival of Mr. Sondhi was announced amidst loud cheer and chants. The leader in Mr. Sondhi soon got to task. He began his talk in a slow manner that defies the effects it has. Every member was challenged to bring in at least 4 more people for donating blood. The collection of blood at the close of camp stood at a whopping 237 units. Hats off to Mr.Sondhi for his magic spell and also to the young donors contributing for a cause!! Certainly a great way to celebrate our Independence day!! Rotarians attending the camps were President Tauby Bhagwagar, Sec. Dinesh Naidu, Director Dr. Sheela Mundada, Dr. Ravi Wankhede,. Sunil Thapar, Shabbar Shakir, Jatin Sampat, Jugalkishore Agrawal, Anju Bansal and Prashant Rajurkar. -Prashant Rajurkar TH
NAGPUR BRANCH OF THE INSTITUTE OF COMPANY SECRETARIES OF INDIA 12 AUGUST 2011 As part of their Corporate Social Responsibility week, The Nagpur chapter of The Company Secretaries of India conducted blood donation camp. This was for the first time they conceived this idea and partnered with our club. The camp which started at 2.30 pm soon gained momentum. Members as well as CS students were part of this camp. What was unique was the participation of female students and the members. Woman's reservation bill may yet to see the light of the day but looks like this professional body is already following it. Out of 30 units colleted, 10 were from female donors. This ratio would have been much better if not for few rejections due to medical grounds. None-the-less these ladies showed great courage. Hats off to their spirit!! President Tauby, Secretary Dinesh, Director Dr Sheela Mundhada, Chairperson Parag Paranjpe were present during the camp. -Parag Paranjpe

New members, older members, member's kids, all shared similar experiences as the evening got along. With members dressing up to the theme in colourful Hawaiian costumes , an inviting beach bar that saw a great deal of activity, foot tapping music, fun games & great food this fellowship evening indeed not only broke ice but kept every ones spirits up. – MANJU AND CHANDRU'S HOME
TAKE ROTARY HOME Planning a Take Rotary Home, takes a lot of effort - Varsha Mansukhani will vouch that, as she made the phone calls this time. To invite some 15-20 couples one needs to call about 50 if not more. But in the end, it is worth it all. On Friday the 17th, we had the 2nd Take Rotary Home at the beautiful home of PP Chandru and Manju Shahani. Gracious as ever, they make good hosts and see to it that
every guest is comfortable. The food was great and just the right quantity. The group was a perfect mingle of the old and the new and the old and the young. Chairperson Anula Goenka had come up with a mingling game and Manju had brought her Karaoke out. We found new singing talents in brand new Rotarian Dr.Nikunj Pawar and also a not so new Rajiv Yashroy. PP Arun Bhargava imparted Rotary

HEALTH CHECK UP CAMP
Height of matters……
The health check up camp at “Shaskiya bahu apang Mulanche sammishra Kendra and Shaskiya Karmashala, Sadar, Nagpur” on Sunday, the 7th Aug was a huge success. The camp began with a welcome and felicitation function organised by the Kendra authorities where President Tauby, Secretary Dinesh and all participants were welcomed and given a memento made by the students of the handicapped workshop. President Tauby addressed the assembly and assured all help to the students. In fact, she invited suggestions from the students and Kendra staff if they require any specific help in increasing the job oriented training facility at the Kendra. This was received with huge applause by the students present in the assembly. After the inaugural function, all members were taken for a tour of the Kendra and were shown the facilities available for vocational training e.g. a fully equipped computer workshop. Interestingly, this tour was video graphed by a specially challenged student of the Kendra which showed the standard of the training facility provided by the workshop. Doctors who gave their time and skill for this camp were Dr. Iqbal Khan, Dr. Nandini Babhulkar, Dr. Shailendra Mundada, Dr. Jerestine Watchmaker, Dr. Rajesh Singhvi, Dr. Santosh Sonarkar, Dr. Manoj Vyawhare, Dr. Anil jain, Dr. Chetan Dixit & Dr. Pravin Mishra. This camp wouldn't be successful had there been no help from non – doctors who gave the logistic support and worked with full devotion. Shahrukh Cassad, Shabbar Shakir, Divya Dass, Anita Jain, Sunil Bhatia, and Sunil Thapar were other prominent figures present for the camp. During this camp a complete clinical check up of 150 students were carried out and 25 students were subjected for blood investigations like Hb%, Blood group. Appropriate medicines were also distributed during this camp. After analysing the proceedings of the health check up reports of the students, we felt the need of a Gynaecologist and an orthopaed-ician which was noted for the future camps in the Kendra. We also felt that adding adolescent counselling would be quite appropriate for the students of this institute. In a talk with the training staff of handicapped student workshop, a request was made to our Club to help students secure appropriate jobs. The Kendra was also in need of few physiotherapy instruments like quadriceps strengthening table, Portable muscle stimulator, static cycle, Suspension table with accessories and Shoulder wheel with pulleys. We assured to forward the request to the club members. -Dr. Sameer S. Jahagirdar

GET ON BOARD
-ATUL SHAH (PRESIDENT ELECT)
know your Board members Atul means 'incomparable' and Shah means 'King'. Combine the two and we have an Incomparable King in our midst - Atul Shah. He does have the countenance and bearing of a king and we hope he will live up to his name next year. Atul had quite an interesting childhood. Born in London, he did his schooling in Chennai, living with his Nani, Laxmiben Mehta, who he reveres and who is his role model in life. After that, he studied in Amravati, a small cotton rich town about 150 kms from Nagpur, which is actually his hometown. So from London and Chennai, where education is English based and then to Amravati to a Hindi medium school. He sure must have been miserable! His parents are doctors, Dr.Pramod Shah (Surgeon, Retd.) and mother, Dr.Bakul Shah (Gynecologist, Retd.). Between the years 1968 and 1996, she delivered 1700 babies! His family runs a 50 bed hospital in Amravati. Being the only son (he has a younger sister, Sonia, married in Amdavad, she works as a freelance research assistant to IIM professors) he was quite spoilt, though he denies it vehemently and says that his father was a strict disciplinarian. Yes Atul, we believe you! No wonder you are trying so hard to control your short temper! Surprisingly, Atul was never interested in the medical field as he found it to be all work and no play. Even more surprising is that his parents supported him in his decision. So he did his BE from the Government Engineering College in Amravati and started looking for a business opportunity. While he was about this, he noticed that whoever he would go to for advice, would ask him to join their business. On introspection, Atul felt that all of these people wanted him to join them, then he must definitely be good! He dabbled around in various businesses for sometime and during a chance meeting with an old Gujju friend, while

he was a trainee with Aptech in Chennai, the f r i e n d suggested that Atul set up his own IT training centre. During that time, the IT revolution was just starting and Atul set up Atul flanked by Raunaq & Shefali. Lorded over by pet Simba his 1st IT training centre in Nagpur in 1989. On Life ...
X-FACTOR
Life is meant for living! You should know what makes you happy in this world. No particular place, no particular time can make you happy. Happiness is natural to our being. Unhappiness needs to be created. You have to work for it. You pick up happiness when your mind assumes a certain disposition. To be happy you require just yourself. To be happy is to accept yourself the way you are and to accept the world as it is. This by no means says that one must not change. You can improve the world and your surroundings for a healthy life. Simple living is living satisfied with the minimum necessities in life. When you go after things which do not provide you the ends you want to achieve, you will have tensions from frustrations. Happiness and peace within you need three basic things 1 . Accept facts as they are and then act to improve them. 2 . Act all the time, never react. Reaction does not provide anything . 3 . Understand that everybody has a mind and so and because of it all have problems. Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass, but to learn to dance in the rain. -Deepali Kale

The Dosa itself was crisp with ample filling and the chutney and Sambhar were, as they say “something to die for”!. The size too was large, with the edges protruding a couple of inches

“SOMETHING TO DIE FOR ” on either side of the shinning thali they were served in . The coffee was again something else, big breakfast cups with the “Coffee Board” logo printed on then filled to the brim, served by “Cummerbunded” waiters with fancy turbans. We had our own names for the Waiters, some of which can't be mentioned in a family Magazine like G.O, but our absolute favourite was an elderly fellow who was affectionately called Radhakrishnan for his uncanny resemblance to our former President Late S.Radhakrishnan ( no disrespect meant). Through the years my visits to C.H. increased from “once in a while” to daily to twice or thrice a day (during college). The price of Dosas also
steadily increased from the original 4 Annas to 8 Annas to 12 Annas to Re 1/- , but there was also a barely perceptible decrease in the size of the Dosa over time, as also the Coffee Cups. Today the M.Dosa costs Rs. 40/- and Coffee Rs.15/-, but the size of the cup leaves much to be desired, so unless you have 2 cups you don't feel the buzz. I have had my fair share of Dosas from different joints' at different places but thankfully the Dosas at C.H. haven't shrunk much and the Chutney and Sambhar are still "Something to die for"!! -Shiraz Gimi
PROGENETICS Genesis of Projects YOUTH FEST The year was 2001 – 02. An idea took root, which has now manifested as one of our glamorous and popular projects. It's the Youth Fest. Chandru Shahani was the President and Vikram Naidu was in charge of Rotaractors. Two young and enthusiastic Rotaractors suggested to Vikram to have various activities on an inter collegiate level. This idea was nurtured by Vikram and without much hand twisting, Chandru agreed! So the Youth Fest started its journey. September is the new generation month, and previously visiting colleges for talks on various topics was the only interaction we had with these youngsters. The idea was to have some healthy competition amongst the college going youths of the city. There were no banners, no visiting colleges, only word of mouth, but it was enough to get the students started. We did not have too many events, as
20
everything was still in an infant stage. The club was learning. We opted for the safer ones like debates and quiz. Ninna Chugh with Rajiv Behal conducted the quiz and with Rajiv's passion for music, Antakshari was introduced. Antakshari, aired on Zee TV was very popular in those days. Incidentally the first antakshari was conducted by Rajiv alone. Later our President, Tauby stepped in and the rest, as they say, is history! As the Youth Fest was gaining momentum and popularity, Youth Idol was introduced. Conceptualized and orchestrated by Khushnoor Chugh, it became the highlight of the festival. Students were groomed for this round which spread over the entire month of September. She conducted the Youth Idol for three years in a row, later passed on to Rina Sinha, who did an equally
remarkable job. Now we have close to eight events. The youth fest would be chaotic if it weren't for Anns like Renu Thapar and Nilofer Rana who handle the registration and madness with such ease. A project like the Youth Fest is the hard work of not just a handful of Rotarians but the efforts of an entire club! Every year a new team of Chairpersons with their Directors works arduously for a successful project. Ten years and still going strong, a reflection of how projects in our Club are conducted. -Anita Chitaley

FREEDOM(AIN) For the children Hi Free-domainians, It's the much a w a i t e d r a i n y season…….bringing back memories of childhood …..dancing in the rain, playing in puddles of water, those little paper boats(not keeping in mind the no. of copies we tore) the much awaited bell of the bhuttawalla and above all mom's warm hug after the scolding of having played in the rain. Where is that Freedom – only left in memories. That was the time when rain was refreshing and sunshine was welcoming………the winds braced our kites on the trees. There never seemed to be bad weather only different types of good weather. Kids with the Freedom u have enjoy the natural weather, rather than being inside air conditioned rooms glued to computers/video games………enjoy the weather in the city……….. rather than waiting to have annual holidays to enjoy nature……… Enjoy …..for TODAY you are better than Y E S T E R D AY a n d W O R S E t h a n TOMORROW……… Freedom is precious…….. enjoy it………… COMMUNICATION Effective Communication is an important factor in today's world – verbal or non-verbal. A lot of importance is laid on verbal communication from the time we are born……our parents teach us to talk….. our teachers teach us the basics of correct usage of the language……. And acquiring conversational skills by attending debates/camps/participating in various educational and social functions. BUT did you know that only 7% of our communication is verbal……and 93% is non-verbal. Yes, my dear friends….We find the importance of Non-Verbal Communication (NVC)has grown rapidly, and is now widely used. It is typical to see a crowd of teenagers sitting together, and atleast half of them have their
22
noses into their cell phones while texting someone. In fact, most of you I find are more comfortable texting as a means of communication rather than face to face conversation. You all have heard the expression “Actions speak louder than words”. It is one of the biggest misconceptions that what is said, is more important than how it is said. In today's world, both occupy equal importance despite the difference in their expressed percentage. Let us share a few facts on non - verbal communication: 1. Non-verbal signals make messages more powerful e.g. helping out in the house on the day mom is too tired to do so……passess on a message of love and caring 2. NVC helps clarify misunderstanding and communication barriers Not sulking for too long after u have been corrected, doing things the way the teacher/parent/friend may like it to be done………without being asked to 3. Use a different type of communication channel for an emotional message…eg. Hug, pat, soft hand holding. To daylives NVC is not only body language it is gestures, touch, smell, tone of voice and even sometimes silence. A brief introduction to the types of body language – to use in your daily lives: 1.HAPTICS NVC study of touch e.g. handshake, hug, pat 2.KINETICS study of body movement in space e.g. OK sign by thumbs up Clapping / jumping To emphasise words – He is THIS tall 3.CHRONEMICS Use of time in NVC – leaving a party early to complete your homework/pre assigned task - a message is passed that my work has priority. 4.OLFACTICS
Communication by smell – we react to people on the basis of their smell So we see that NVC. plays a much more important role in our lives than we had ever imagined. RI President 2013-14 Ron D. Burton, a member of the Rotary Club of Norman, Oklahoma, USA, is the selection of the Nominating Committee for President of Rotary International in 2013-14. Burton will become the president-nominee on 1 October if there are no challenging candidates. Burton retired as president of the University of Oklahoma Foundation Inc. in 2007. He is a member of the American Bar Association, as well as the bar associations of Cleveland County and the state of Oklahoma. He is admitted to practice in Oklahoma and before the U.S. Supreme Court.
"This is an exciting time to be a Rotarian," Burton says. "I believe we are well poised to capitalize on our strengths as we embrace the [RI] Strategic Plan and the Future Vision Plan. My vision is to have every Rotarian appreciate what it means to be a Rotarian. With these two tools, we can make that happen." Active in his community, Burton is a founder and past president of the Norman Public School Foundation, and founder and past board member of the Norman Community Foundation. A recipient of the Silver Beaver Award, he is a past vice president of the Last Frontier Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Burton believes that Rotary's promotion of high ethical standards is one of the qualities that sets it apart from other organizations. "It assures those dealing with us that we can be trusted," he says. "Most of us are in a business or profession that already has a code of ethics. Vocational service in Rotary just adds to that responsibility. We have an obligation to go above and beyond to make sure that all our actions are above reproach." A Rotarian since 1979, Burton is vice chair of the Future Vision Committee and a member of the Polio Eradication Advocacy Task Force for
THEODORE BOONE -THE ABDUCTION (BY JOHN GRISHAM) Some quick reasons why one should not be doing a John Grisham book review – everyone knows that he writes pacy legal thrillers and is known for his unexpected twists at the end. Another reason to avoid such a book which is a bestseller from the day of release is that it's obviously well written about already. Well, here are a few reasons why it felt necessary (from my perspective) to do so firstly, this author has discovered a new genre which is age proof and deserves special mention. Second, this genre is devoid of any of the usual trappings of the sci-fi world or futuristic, wild and ultra imaginary surroundings and creatures, which one associates with writing aimed at targeting the youth. For those brought up on a diet of Enid Blyton and characters such as the Famous Five / Secret Seven ilk, or subsequently The Hardy Boys / Nancy Drew mysteries leading up to Perry Mason and other such investigative characters, this is another shot at mystery solving and crime busting. Theodore Boone (who debuted as Young Lawyer in the earlier book) is now again caught up in the investigation to search his best friend who has gone missing. Theodore is constantly torn between his desire to be a hot shot criminal lawyer or a judge who would preside over very important cases and deliver outstanding judgments, no less! He is the only child of lawyer parents and also has a lawyer
uncle (who is somehow always suspect because of his unsavoury past). Aged only 13, it is a constant struggle to balance his time between school activities and his keen interest in law and the process of law. He always manages to squeeze out time to somehow be in the courtrooms at the local county court house – where his ability and keenness is understood and acknowledged by the entire law enforcement machinery in town. Theodore is also mature enough to not share / disclose what his best friend has shared as a confidante – he is constantly torn between his desire to bare the truth and remain true to his friend. Grisham has dealt with this beautifully in a simple yet effective style. For obvious reasons, I have avoided to share too many details of the story here. Coming to the point of how Grisham has approached the characterization of this franchise (I cannot imagine him not writing more in the Theodore Boone series), he presents the children as typical of these times, who always carry cell phones, and, to borrow an American expression – communicate by texting each other; use the internet / and its myriad options to exchange information, conduct research for their school projects and of course, chat; all this, of course in a controlled environ in terms of how much time could be spent on these activities. Why I recommend the book to one and all, especially for all ages tweens upward, is this –

ALL BOOKED
book review
for young readers it is wholesome reading and could lead to improving their interests maybe towards future careers, offers language which is perfectly acceptable and comprehensible by young readers (read – free of jargon); a wonderful journey to our childhood when we read mystery novels, but which are dated today because they are from a different age and do not offer the same milieu hence today's readers find it impossible to relate to. For that very same reason, it's very difficult to get them to read that which we grew up reading. A rare style of writing, appreciable - not because it is from Grisham (whose reputation ensures bestseller status by default), but because it is refreshing to see an author who can straddle different genres and yet have universal appeal due his ability to interest readers of all ages for entirely different reasons. This book, then, is a far cry from the Grisham of 'A Time To Kill' (which was very intense - and in my opinion – easily his best novel ever) and subsequent w o r k s . -Nimish Sutaria

NAGPUR (K)NOW City Special N a g p u r, w h e n w e w e r e teenagers, seemed to be paradise on earth ….where else could we get to do all that we did….. Bunk college, be with friends all day long, do absolutely nothing!!! It was a different time, a different world ….. 'Competition', academic or otherwise was non- existent, expectations, were not stifling .Life was slower, kinder, and friendlier!!!! We cycled everywhere… to school, to tuitions and to friend's places around the city, it kept us independent and fit, no cars, no drivers were ever at our service. The cycles we had were not fancy, but had great names like Atlas, Blue bird, BSA ! All along we dreamt of the time we would get motorcycles, and wondered what would it be that we would be given… a Yezdi ?, a Bullet??? Or, God forbid, a Luna???
badminton, TT, swimming! If the monthly club bill showed that w e had ordered too many snacks, our fathers would threaten to revoke our right to sign vouchers….we would still take our chances and sign for Naidu's famous 'roast chicken' every once in a while… I can recall our heart throbs…..Poonam Dillon, Farah Faucet, Bo Derek, and Tina Munim…our heroes were Gavaskar and Kapil Dev, although we lost every test match we played in those days! We loved Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris..And the music we played included Nazia Hassan, Billy Joel and Phil Collins and Doors…to hear the latest English music we had to tune in to Radio Australia at 2.30pm on Fridays. We read James Hardly Chase and Harold Robbins... The naughty parts were carefully bookmarked for other friends to read!!
Our haunts were typical, a chai walla in seminary hills, the labour court canteen for samosas, Coffee House for dosas , Liberty cinema for the odd English movie ( dress circle seats at Rs 2.75 a pop).. best of all was the milk scheme canteen , it was open all night and the only place where u could get coffee after 10 pm!
Dressing up was never important, clothes appeared mysteriously in our cupboards and we were fine with what there was, no brands, no labels! We had no idea what “Benetton” or “Lacoste” meant, we knew only Levis and Adidas, but only kids whose parents traveled abroad could hope for any such stuff! Our watches were all 'hmt', our shoes either Bata or Carona.
The CP club was our second home, we were there most of the day for billiards, snookers,
We left our parents alone and they reciprocated likewise… as long as we passed
BOBBY'S BUBBLES In the summer of 1990 my wife Prema and I were returning a visit in the home of Past Governor Bill Cable and his wife Miriam in Syracuse Indiana, an hour's drive from Chicago. Bill had come to O'Hare airport to receive us. Bill and Miriam had earlier visited us for a couple of days in our home at Nagpur.
24
Bill and Miriam had total commitment to Rotary. They took us round all historical sites, particularly of Rotary in and around Chicago. Bill took us to Mount Hope Cemetery the final resting-place of Rotary's founder Paul Harris. He also took us to Midland Hotel in Adam Street in downtown Chicago where some of office equipment of Paul Harris was stored. Bill asked for $ 100 that I gave without questioning! I had been made a life member of Paul Harris 711 Club! Bill Cable was founder Secretary of this history Club. He told me that Paul Harris 711 Club is a not for profit corporation organized in 1983 to preserve and maintain the cradle of Rotary for all Rotarians
exams and did not get into any trouble that we could not ourselves get out off! It was friends, everywhere, all the time! Bonds were forged that will last a lifetime. There were some girls in the group, they were friendly, uncomplicated and tom boyish, and as they knew we were always broke, they even paid for their own movie tickets and outings… How much it has all changed for today's teens,…Cafe Coffee Day ( sorry, that should have been CCD),Fionna Lounge, page 3 parties ,facebook, fast bikes and fancy cars ,mobiles and BBMs, computers and ipods, internet, x box…..designer clothes and designer colleges…credit cards and ATMs ….girls still not sixteen, looking and behaving like Bollywood sirens!!! So much is given to them, but even more is expected….”you have to get over 90%, beta.”, “you have to get into IIT...beta” , “you have to live up to all our dreams and hopes, beta, after all look at what all we are doing and spending for you …..” We have, what they call, 'progressed'!, But I would not trade those simple days of what Nagpur was “then” for all the razzmatazz of the Nagpur “now”! -Rukshad Bhagwagar
PAUL HARRIS 711 CLUB & MEMORIAL WALKWAY
worldwide. Rotary was born in Room 711 of Unity Building, 127 N. Dearborn Street in downtown Chicago. Hence the name Paul Harris 711 Club. When the Unity Building was demolished in 1989 the 711 Club was able to save and store many artifacts and materials such as window frames, flooring, doors, partitions, marble slabs from the entrance hall, Room 711 Founding Members plague etc. These were temporarily removed to nearby Midland Hotel Building at 176 West Adams Street.
Rotary at Evanston will be able to view the Room as it was in 1905. The Paul Harris Memorial and Presidential Walkway is located in Mount Hope Cemetery in Chicago. Founder Paul Harris and first Rotary President Sylvester Schiele is buried in this lovely resting-place. The Presidential Walkway and Memorial was established to preserve their burial sites. I had the privilege to walk over this walkway on 10 April 1990. Between the gravesides there were vacant sites which luckily no one had purchased. These have been purchased by Rotarians to help preserve the entire area for Rotary Founder's Memorial.
With repeated appeals from 711 Club, RI Board agreed in November 1992 to allot space on the 16th floor of one Rotary Center at Evanston. Following this 711 Room has been reconstructed in the south conference room on the 16th floor of One Rotary Center adjacent to the Paul Harris Room. The 711 Club will continue as an organization with the new address in RI headquarters.
Rotarians visiting Chicago can go to this beautiful marble laid Memorial ground at Mount Hope Cemetery. Rotary Club of Blue Island arranges tours before and after its luncheon meetings.

NETIQUETTES "Netiquette" stands for "Internet Etiquette", and refers to the set of practices created over the years to make the Internet experience pleasant for everyone. Like other forms of etiquette, netiquette is primarily concerned with matters of courtesy in communications. The following sections provide more information. Netiquette of sending & replying to emails: Be brief, use descriptive subject lines, stay on the topic, be careful in sending attachments, copy to the minimum number of people, and always, always use the BCC function (eg: make a fake email id like undisclosed@undisclosed.com and put that in the 'to' field. All the other email ids you want to include should be inserted in the BCC field to preserve receivers' identities.) Acknowledge important communications, never send what you don't read, respect copyright. Facebook Etiquette : With Facebook taking the world by storm in just a couple of years, there is confusion on the do's and don'ts of using Facebook properly ... here is some help! Message Private Matters Instead of Posting On Wall Your friends might not take it too kindly when you post what they did last night at your house party, or any other stuff which are understood to be kept between your closest friends. Be Mindful Of What You Post: When you have hundreds of friends in Facebook, you have people from all kinds of backgrounds, all with different beliefs, personalities, etc. A general statement may seem harmless to you, but others may read it in a different light. Call Rather Than Post Personal News : If you need to inform your friends or your family about some important and personal news (e.g. death in the family), don't declare it out in the public domain. Reply To Comments Especially If They Are Questions: You post a status, and your friends make comments and 'like' it, the least you can do is to acknowledge them by replying, especially when they are questions directed to you. Avoid Posting Comments On Every Post : Don't make it a habit to comment on everything your friends post. Your friend's friends might notice as well. If you don't wish to be labeled a pest, try to limit your comments. Don't Make Friend Requests To Strangers : Some people have this idea that the number of 'friends' you have in Facebook is a status of your popularity in real-life. This is not true in the case of strangers whom you randomly add while browsing through Facebook. Don't Tag Your Friends In 'Unglam' Shots : Guys may take it lightly when they are tagged in photos that look as if they just woke up from the bed, thinking that it's a joke by their friends. When it comes to girls though, appearing 'unglam' means a lot more to them. Don't Overshare Yourself : Checking out the updates on your newsfeed, you see the same friend updating his status over and over again. Just posts about what he's doing every ten minutes. It's annoying because no one is really interested in their friends' everyday mundane activities. Don't Flame Others : Everyone is entitled to state their own opinion on the free internet, so there's no need to put anyone down just because you disagree (or worse, don't like the person). In the spirit of good conversations, let's keep this in mind in whatever communication we have online, in Facebook, forums, emails, etc. Don't ruin it for everyone. When you begin to use the internet responsibly, others learn to do it too! Cheers! Until next time. -Sohrab Kanga

Zero Percenters !! The question for this month is: What do you think about the members with zero percent attendance in the Club? By zero per cent I mean members OR their spouses who are never seen at weekly meetings or projects, do not participate in Club affairs and do not contribute financially in any way other than giving their half-yearly subscriptions. Some of them may sometimes be seen only at fellowship functions!! Sunil Thapar: 80% of success is just showing up. We may have the greatest bunch of individuals as members, but if they don't participate, the club won't be worth a dime to them and their subscription means a dime to the club!! The zero per-centers are certainly not with the main stream. “There is no joy of Rotary without the joy of work”. Zero percenters, please spare our club and look elsewhere where your presence will be of consequence!!
Sati Khanna: I'm glad you have taken up a very important issue of dealing with zero percenters in our Rotary Club. My message to them is “WE DO NOT NEED R I N O'S (Rotarians in Name Only) in our Club. WE NEED ROTARIANS! Our Cub President should send this message in writing to each and every ZERO PERCENTER. Sonia Khurana: ZERO ATTENDANCE!! It is for us to really contemplate whether we really need such Members for just their annual contribution, which gives them the status symbol in the society and the city of their residence, as being a part of the Rotary Club of Nagpur and use this for their personal and business gains. Let there be a committee, or even the enlightenment committee can take it up by mentoring such members. I am sure most of them would come back and be involved with the Club activities, or else the HIGHWAY is always open to them!
X-PRESS S h i r a z Doongaji: My personal view is that these members should be black-balled from the club!! Infact, the members who had introduced these members should not be allowed to introduce members for a period of 3 years!! I know of a lady member's husband (Anna), telling me that half our fees are recovered in the 4-5 fellowship functions we attend; that means they are only members for being in the company of the so called elite of the society & to socialize!! I am glad that you have raised this point -- hope Pres-Pratibha…. “Oops!” Pres Tauby chooses to take positive action. Well, there you have it. All these members are pretty regular and involved in the Club's affairs, so their views are expectedly quite vehement. We need to get the zeropercenters to express their views……lekin woh kissa phir kabhi! Anybody with different views is welcome to express them through the mailbox i.e letters to the editor. -PP Dr. Sanjiv Chugh
