n the wake of intense cold and bad weather conditions in Jabalpur, the Rotary Club of Jabalpur Excellence, RI District 3261, conducted a warm clothes distribution drive wherein

woollen clothes were distributed among the poor and homeless people. Members of the club also visited an old-age home and distributed ­blankets and sweaters to the 94 inmates. Amit

Jain, President of the club, said that “Many homeless people are seen ­roaming in different parts of the city who could now get warm clothes ­because of this project.” n

nder the umbrella of Rotary, women empowerment committee of Rotary Club Jaipur, RI District 3054, conducted an ‘All Women Bicycle Rally’ as a district event on International Women’s Day in Jaipur. The rally was

flagged off from the famous Albert Hall Museum, Ramniwas Bagh in Jaipur ­ ajasthan Minister by the R of State for Women and Child Development Mamta Bhupesh. Former Speaker of Legislative Assembly, Sumitra Singh, Dr KL Jain, Honorary Secretary General, Rajasthan

Chamber of Commerce and Industry were among the other dignitaries present at the event. Young girls from various colleges and women cyclists enthusiastically participated in the rally. The chief guest Mamta Bhupesh said that, “Without depending on

anybody, women should create their own identity and carve a niche for themselves.” Anubha Jain, Chairperson of the Women Empowerment Committee of the club, emphasised that to fight against gender-based violence, women should educate themselves. n

Kalaripayattu and Mohiniyattam

alaripayattu, a martial art form of Kerala, and Mohiniyattam performed by skilled artistes during a two-day International RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Award) hosted by Rotary Club of Payangadi, RID 3202, at Yamunatheeram Resort at Kanayi–Kannur highway, mesmerised the audience. Two workshops on Kalaripayattu were conducted at Madayipara, where 20 artists performed with a sickle, knife and also sticks. However, Prasad the guru from Kalari Gurukkal,

made it clear that Kalaripayattu is not used to attack or harm anybody. It is used as a defence technique. Women acquainted with the art form can protect themselves in troublesome situations. Annet Arunima performed Mohiniyattam. In his inaugural address PDG E K Saghadevan, told the students, “Rotary believes in the youth, you people are the future peace ambassadors of the entire world. While you are here, learn from one and another and make good friends from around the world.” Eight classroom

sessions including the topic — Rotary International, a world of opportunity for youths and keynote address by Happiness Coach Dr Sai Kaustuv Gupta, were conducted for the students. A total of 103 students participated in the RYLA, including 10 Rotary International Youth Exchange Students from Brazil, Germany, USA, France and Czechoslovakia. Shreyasi Patil (RI District 3170) was selected as the Best Female Participant and Andre Brasileiro from Brazil (RI District 4480) and Christopher Mario (RI District 3190) shared the best Male Participants title. RYLA Certificates were distributed to all the participants while 30 students were given Certificates of Achievement. n

ollowing a month-long research and deliberations, the club members of RC Mansa, RID 3090, have set up a wheat grass juice centre near the local goshala in Mansa, a small town in Punjab. Started under the patronage of Club Secretary Naresh Kumar Bansal, also the

People in the locality were informed of the wheat grass juice centre and more than 150 farmers, including women, queued up at 6 am to partake this natural remedy.

“At present, more than 750 people are taking advantage of the preventive remedy which has proven results in decreasing diabetic-levels as well as offering cure in digestive issues,” said Bansal. Many cancer patients have felt improvement in their health after taking the juice and it also reduced the effects of

A separate team is at work at dawn to extract the juice from wheat grass by pounding it in a traditional way with neem-based rolls,” explains Bansal. n

Mother’s Milk Bank inaugurated in Jalgaon V Muthukumaran

A

mothers’ milk bank set up by RC Jalgaon West, RID 3030, was inaugurated by DG Rajiv Sharma under the Mata Amrut Project in partnership with the Jalgaon People’s Bank and Ramdas Patil Smruti Seva Trust. The new facility was located on the premises of Rajashree Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj Hospital, Jalgaon. During the inauguration, the club honoured 27 Rotarians and non-Rotarians who had contributed in setting up the milk bank. PDG Kishor Kedia and other Rotarians were present on the occasion. During the World Rotaract Week, the club members cut a grand cake at the Rotary Bhavan

Tribute to Pulwama martyrs All the Rotary clubs in Jalgaon came together to pay homage to the soldiers who were killed in the ­Pulwama terror attack in Kashmir. The Rotarians lit candles and paid floral tributes to the slain jawans. Senior members recalled the valour of Indian soldiers who guard the remote borders despite physical challenges. A four-day cricket tournament, Rotary Premier League, saw the participation of 16 Rotary teams consisting of over 270 players from Jalgaon, Pachora, Bhusaval and Chopda. “The main objective of this tournament was to raise funds for a social cause to help the needy people of the society. We got an overwhelming response from all the clubs, the sponsors, team coordinators, and all

A mega cancer camp for Dombivli residents

I

n a major health initiative, two clubs — RCs Dombivli Saudamini and Dombivli Downtown, RID 3142 — joined hands to organise a mega cancer screening camp for underprivileged people under the aegis of the Indian Cancer Society. Six doctors including three gynaecologists, two general surgeons and an ENT specialist, along with their paramedical staff, examined the patients at the Varada Vinayak Hall in Dombivli East. “The doctors registered nearly 100 people comprising domestic maids, drivers, cleaners and cooks and screened

Team Rotary News them meticulously for cancer symptoms,” said Anuradha Deshpande, a member of the all-women’s RC Dombivli Saudamini. The club is following up with the doctors and “if anyone is detected with cancer, they will be given proper treatment free of cost. The overwhelming response left both clubs with an opportunity to conduct more such camps in the future.” An inter-school dance competition was organised for students in and around Dombivli in which 30 solo dancers and 140 teams showcased their extra-curricular talent. The winners will get a chance to do

Rotary clubs jointly build home for the flood victims Team Rotary News

t was in last May when several families in various parts of Kerala lost their homes to the devastating floods that swept over the State. Ever since, Rotarians across the country and world over have been reaching out to the flood victims in providing various forms of assistance. The Rotarians of RID 3211 which comprises major regions of the State have undertaken a signature project — Sneha Veedu, which translates as ‘Home of Love’ — to

build houses for those who have lost their homes in the floods. RC Haripad has joined hands with Rotary Clubs of Pondicherry Auro City and Pondicherry Elite of RID 2981, and RC SNGC, RID 9220, Reunion Island, France, to build such homes for the affected people in Haripad. “What is special about this project is the broad cooperation of Rotarians across the continents for carrying out a tiny project, costing

otary Greater Cochin, RID 3201, conducted a sports meet recently at the Maharajas College stadium in Ernakulam. The event had participation of 800 Rotarians and their family members from different regions of the district. This is the

Eighty events were conducted by the officials of the Sports Authority and RC Kolencherry won the overall championship, while RC Cochin East won the Rtn Jos Thomas Memorial Trophy for maximum participation. Arjuna Awardee volleyball player Tom Joseph was the celebrity guest in the valedictory meeting. DGE Madhav Chandran, the chief guest of the evening, congratulated the participants. fire accident in the Anaj Mandi colony in the city rendered 13 families homeless. The members of RC Paonta Sahib, RID 3080, visited the locality immediately and distributed blankets, warm clothes, mattresses and tarpaulin sheets for making temporary roofs for the residents. Food packets, groceries and other essential items were also provided. The club has adopted for the year, Shishu Aagman Utsav, a project to take care of the welfare of newborns. Under the project, the members regularly visit ­hospitals and distribute newborn kits ­comprising tiny dresses, towels and bedsheets, and health food and a blanket for the mother. A blood donation drive ­organised by the club, along with the Rotaractors, helped collect nearly 70 units of blood which was handed over to the IMA blood bank in Dehradun. n MAY 2019  Rotary News Plus

Ambalpady club promotes cleanliness and conducts voters’ awareness rally Team Rotary News

n association with the Carrybag Foundation, Bengaluru, Rotary Club of Ambalpady, RI District 3182, provided toilet cleaning kits to 100 government schools in Udupi. The kits will be provided regularly to these schools to promote the Swachh Shouchalaya movement. A water purifier was donated to the Government High School in Manipura by the club to help 150 students access clean drinking water.

The Rotarians, along with 50 students and teachers, conducted a voters’ awareness rally in the city to urge the people to cast their votes at the Lok Sabha elections and also teach first-time voters how to use the electronic voting machine. The rally was jointly conducted by the club, SVEEP committee of the district administration, Udupi Town Municipality and the government high school in Ajjarakadu. n

he Rotarians of RC Villupuram, RID 2982, conducted various programmes aimed at sensitising people about preserving the earth and adopting natural lifestyle. They encouraged and assisted schoolchildren in planting saplings of fruit-bearing trees on the campus of Shanti Niketan Matriculation School in the town. The students were educated about the importance to preserve natural resources. In another programme, the members, along with Pasumai Padhai, an organisation in Coimbatore that concentrates on preserving and promoting greenery, organised a three-day workshop in the town on organic farming, rain water harvesting and terrace gardening. The club distributed study material to the students of a panchayat union primary school in the town. n

one-day programme on stress management and training was organised for women police at Kanyakumari district by RC ­Nagercoil, RID 3212. Sixty women officers from various police departments were given training to cope with work-related stress as well as family commitments. Given the spurt in suicides among women police force, the workshop dealt with issues like positive and negative stress, yoga therapy and how to overcome suicidal thoughts. Kanyakumari SP N Shreenath inaugurated the programme which was organised jointly with Suraksha Family Counselling Centre.

The club organised a ‘Flamingo Watch and Festival’ to create awareness among Rotarians about this migratory bird which travels thousands of miles from Siberia to

India. It was also an awareness event to keep the habitat of the birds — salt pans of South — clean and plastic-free to ensure that the bird’s environment is protected. n

he members of RC Mumbai South, RID 3141, organised a mega youth mela for a month and conducted various competitions, workshops and awareness programmes for over 1,500 students from 32 schools. Teachers were also recognised with awards for their outstanding contributions to the student community. Winners of the various events were felicitated by DG Shashi Sharma and Group Coordinator Arun Bhargava. The month-long programme culminated with a valedictory at the Bahai Centre in Mumbai. The club has been organising such a programme regularly for the past decade, said Club President Sanatan Mody.n

These included a mammogram camp to screen women for breast cancer, an osteoporosis, bone density and eye check-up camp in various localities in the town. Rotary Mela enhances Rotary’s public image

n Malpura, a small city 90 km from Jaipur, Rotary Club ­Malpura Green, RI District 3054, organised a Rotary Mela for a fortnight recently. The carnival that saw a footfall of nearly 70,000 people had joyrides for children, ­entertainment

and music programmes, and sports events. The highlights of the programme included a Poet’s Conference, ramp walk and a standup comedy show which worked as a catalyst to showcase local talent and enhance Rotary’s public image.

RC Tirupur West Relief material worth `6.75 lakh were given to the cyclone-affected people in Thalikkottai village in Thanjavur district in a joint project with RC Kottai in Pattukkottai. Forty Rotarians gave the relief kits containing groceries and dress material to the needy at the village.

RC Nagercoil Town The Rotarians came together to solemnise the marriage of a poor couple at a cost of `1 lakh at the Rotary Town Hall in the city. DGND Jascinda Dharma as chief guest presided over the ceremony. Club President Chithambaram Pillai was also present.

RC Pearlcity Tuticorin In partnership with NLC Tamilnadu Power, the club organised a mega cycle rally during Vigilance Awareness Week to focus on the need to prevent corruption. RC Katpadi A host of projects was taken up at a government high school at Karikeri village in Vellore district as part of its Happy Village programme. Along with a dental camp, the Rotarians took up an anti-plastic awareness drive, donated sports kits and dustbins to the school. Toothpastes and brushes were also given to the students to promote oral hygiene.

ore than 250 students from schools in and around Udumalpet took part in a RYLA event organised by RC Udumalpet Tejas, RID 3202, at the SKP School Auditorium. Special lectures on Swami Vivekananda, selfconfidence and Rotary and its international projects were delivered by college professors. In partnership with Rotaractors from Kamalam College, a plastic-free campaign was taken up at Thirumoorthy hills. The environment clean-up was kicked off by Rtn Chakrapani.
