Not placing limits on growth, innovation and development is the premise that guides us more than ever, given the current economic context. So, starting from this premise, this year Rotecna have continued to work on innovation and development. We have extended our wide range of slats and are the largest manufacturer of this product. This offer allows farmers to customise their facilities to their needs. However, Rotecna we have gone a step further betting on the latest injection technology for manufacturing large parts. A significant investment will allow us to meet the needs of a new generation of increasingly demanding farmers and provide the equipment necessary for the farms to ensure the comfort of the animals and the quality of the product for the final consumer. Working every day to be at the forefront is practically synonymous with success.

In 2013, Rotecna has made one of its most significant investments in recent years with the acquisition of the German-made Krauss Maffei KM2000/24500MX injector, equipped with the latest technology in injection on the market. An investment of more than € 1 million will enable the company to manufacture 100 % of its products, up from 75%, and boost the capacity for innovation and development of large-scale products for pig farms. The new injector allows parts up to 15 kilos in weight. For now, the Krauss Maffei injection and production covers the most popular hoppers in the sector, the TR5 and TR2, the Grow Maxi Feeder and Ni -2 Corner. The head of the injection section at Rotecna, Ramon Petit explains that the new machine has been running since October, adding that, “every day we work to incorporate more products with the aim that this machine will be fully operational from January or February 2014”.

The latest features and technology of the injector open up a whole new range of possibilities to continue positioning Rotecna at the forefront of innovation for the pig sector. That is why the company’s R&D department is working on the design of new products that could be made with the new machine with a maximum capacity for 50-tons moulds. Currently the maximum weight for Rotecna moulds was 6 tons. The CEO of Rotecna, Amable Izquierdo, also emphasized that one of the advantages of Krauss Maffei plastic injector is energy saving. Izquierdo states that the new machine “consumes between 30% and 40% less energy than a conventional injector”. In addition, the acquisition of the new machine means hiring at least 6 direct workers who will become part of a team of about 130 people. With the acquisition of this new injector, Rotecna currently has 12 injection machines, allowing it to continue developing new products according to market needs and improving the service it offers the customers.

The 11th of September: Commemorative or assertive day History The celebration of the Diada dates back to 1886 and commemorates the defeat of Catalonia in 1714, which led to the abolition of the Catalan institutions and a loss of civil liberties. The events of the Diada did not begin until one and a half centuries after this defeat and started off only as funeral oration for the dead in Santa Maria del Mar. The first floral offerings at the monument to Rafel Casanovas, installed six years earlier, took place around 1894. In 1901, from a demonstration, the day took on a more assertive aspect and, in 1923, there was mass celebration with events held throughout Catalonia. From then on, the event increasingly became a popular show of Catalan identity.

The celebration of the Diada was prohibited during the dictatorships of General Primo de Rivera and Franco, and we had to wait to 1976, a year after the death of the Spanish dictator, to celebrate the first major demonstration of the Catalan people under democracy. 1977 was a big historical event: the media of the time said that there were a million people, the theme of the event sponsored by the Assembly of Catalonia was “Liberty, Amnesty, Statute of autonomy.” It was not until last year that our National Day again brought together more than a million people in the same event. Like 35 years ago, Catalans from all walks of life, took to the streets of Barcelona to protest and celebrate at the same time.

Tonio Borg, European Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy, said during the presentation of the new health law that “the food industry is the second largest industry in the EU. Europe has the highest food safety standards in the world. However, the recent horse meat scandal has shown that we can improve, even if there were no health risks.” Outbreaks of animal diseases can also be harmful to humans and damage the economy and trade as a whole. Therefore, the Commission believes that a comprehensive strategy is needed and place greater emphasis on disease prevention. “The measures of animal health policy are not subject to a strict

For this reason, he sees a need to improve the coordination of surveillance of animal diseases, in order to achieve effective cooperation between different sectors and control systems. The main change to the new health law will mean that current EU animal health legislation, with a total of 60 pieces of legislation, will now be reduced to just five. Thanks to this simplification, administrations and stakeholders will have more time to focus on the true priority: prevention and eradication of diseases. In countries like Denmark, Germany and Spain, some farrowing pens are 240 x 190 cm or more, even 270 x 180 cm, so large sows and their litters have enough space adapted to their needs. Controlling the temperature in the room is crucial Managing the temperature necessary for mothers on one hand (16° - 20°C ) and piglets (30° -34°C) on the other, is the key to a good plan for adjusting power use and, therefore, increasing the profitability of the farm. For the comfort of the mothers, who need a cooler temperature, Rotecna has cast slats that are placed under the mother and keep the area cooler. Moreover, there are the plastic slats with surfaces especially designed to be comfortable for the mother when lying on them without harming their breasts, and thanks to the anti-slip pattern, they also let their trotters grip when they move in farrowing. The latest addition to the long list of new slats is the 600x800 mm Comfort Grip (published in No. 54), which also solves the conflictive area shared by sows and piglets during nursing. In this, the last 10 cm on either side are intended for the piglets, and its special relief allows them to have better grip and prevents them slipping during feeding.

A microclimate for piglets The environmental conditions required by piglets, especially in the first few days of life, are very different from those of the mother, but should not be neglected because of this affects whether larger litters with of less weight per piglet can develop progressively and uniformly. In recent years, Rotecna has paid special attention to the needs of the piglets in these new conditions of intensive production. gradually to reduce tariffs on trade with both these countries. These treaties give them a clear competitive edge over other countries, because although the system does not exempt them from the gate prices, it gives them a lower tariff provided that the fixed import quota is not exceeded. This is a reduction of tariff barriers enabling them to undercut their competitors.

Its domestic production is 15th in the world ranking of pig producers. The attraction of this market, according to the report on opportunities for the Spanish pigs in Japan published by the Economic and Social Commission of Spain in Tokyo, (in many cases coinciding with other countries), is linked to its heavy reliance on agricultural products, that has been growing since the 1960s and has caused a structural food deficit. Approximately 50% of Japanese imports of fresh and frozen pork are destined for the Japanese meat processing industry. Of the remaining 50%, it is estimated that

two-thirds are consumed in the hotel sector, butchers and similar shops selling meat, while the other third is sold through supermarkets and specialised butchers. Specifically, in the case of the frozen pork that does not go to the processing industry, 70% goes into the Horeca channel. The most common way of importing of fresh and frozen pork is through trading companies. The Japanese market is a very attractive target for any manufacturer of pork products, but it is a difficult market to enter with

a long, slow process of negotiation. Nevertheless, it is a great business opportunity. Despite this high profile as an importer, Japan is also a producer. Its domestic production is 15th in the world ranking and is also fifth in value (eleventh in quantity) among the main agricultural and livestock products in Japan. However, domestic production is insufficient to meet the internal demand. This deficit is compounded by the positive trend in pork consumption among the Japanese, which is the second most consumed meat in the country. In fact, unlike the general decline in the consumption of meat and fish since 2000, consumption of pork has increased by 0.6 kilograms per person per year.

Pig production increasing According to the report, Japan’s pork production is undergoing a process of restructuring due to the high weight of imports within the sector and the low profitability of the farms. Added to this are the problems derived from strict environmental legislation and that particularly affects waste from livestock farms. In these circumstances where production costs are increased while meat prices are falling, only large farms survive. Table 2 (extracted from the report of the Spanish Office in Japan) it can be seen that, in recent years, the number of farms has decreased while the number of animals per holding has increased. In fact, in

Despite this high competitivity, Japan remains attractive to any pork producer who wishes to export. However, the stakes are high and there are some points to consider. For example, according to the study by Economic and Social Office of Spain in Tokyo, apart from the international crisis, cases of “Listeria monocytogenes” in shipments of sausage and

ham sliced in Japan provoked a decline in meat exports. Japanese customs have zero tolerance of cases of listeria and the MRLs. The documentation required, specific labelling, traceability certificates, meeting all these requirements makes Japan an expensive destination, but equally valuable as a foreign market. Japanese law is an aspect to be taken into account. This, which governs the taxation of imports of pigmeat, seeks to protect domestic production through a system of setting gate prices and safeguards that allow them to be increased in situations considered emergencies. So, under this regulation, the tariff on imported meats whose price is below the gate price is increased to that price level, so these meats lose competitiveness.

1991 there were 36,000 farms with an average of 314.9 head each, while in 2000, this had fallen to 11,700 farms with 838.1 head per farm, and in 2012, there were only 5,840 farms although each had an average of 1,667 head. As for the geographical distribution of pork production, in 2012, the main producing regions were Kyushu, Kanto-Tosan (Gifu, Nagano and Yamanashi prefectures) and Tohoku. There are more than five hundred pigmeat processors in Japan. Most of them are small and medium companies, but the market is dominated by the large manufacturers. The five largest companies in the domestic fresh meat market are: Nippon Meat Packers Inc., Itoham Foods Inc., Prima Meat Packers Ltd., Starzen Corporation and finally Marudai Food Corporation (in descending order of turnover). The figures for meat production, reached 52.7% of the total in 2011, and in the first 11 months of the 2012 fiscal year, this rose to 53.4%, a figure that also reflects this trend.

Export market The Japanese pig meat market is highly competitive. The USA, Denmark, Canada, Mexico and Chile are competing to increase their market share. Meanwhile, Italy leads European Union exports to Japan and is only surpassed by Spain in exports of ham on the bone. Notably, Mexico and Chile signed free trade areas with Japan in order

As explained by the agency, the measures affect animals for slaughter for human consumption and could exclude specimens for breeding, provided they are imported under strict veterinary control.

RUSSIA

SUSPENDS

IMPORTS In mid-April, the Russian Federal Agency for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Control (Rosseljoznadzor) suspended imports of live cattle and pigs from the European Union due to outbreaks of the Schmallenberg virus and bluetongue disease in several EU countries.

The agency previously said it had not received information from the EU about the measures veterinary services have taken to prevent the spread of the diseases, both of high risk to livestock. Rosseljoznadzor requested this information in January. The temporary ban on imports of European cattle to Russia was met with “great disappointment” in Brussels. European Commissioners for Trade and Health, Karel De Gucht and John Dalli, defined this as “disproportionate and unjustified” and demanded its immediate lifting, as reported by RIA Novosti.

What is www.cochon555.com? It is a touring contest in favour of the pig. The goal? To create a set of events (mainly cookery competitions) to show the work of family farms engaged in pig farming. How does it work? Five chefs are brought together (sometimes more), with 5 pigs & 5 sommeliers. These have visited a total of fourteen U.S. cities including New York, Seattle, Atlanta, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago since 2008 extolling pork and inheritance left by its producers.

gradually to reduce tariffs on trade with both these countries. These treaties give them a clear competitive edge over other countries, because although the system does not exempt them from the gate prices, it gives them a lower tariff provided that the fixed import quota is not exceeded. This is a reduction of tariff barriers enabling them to undercut their competitors.

JAPAN, THE WORLD’S LEADING IMPORTER OF
