Other events

For three days, the 333 Experience Congress LATAM 2024, held in Costa Rica last October, brought together more than 1,000 participants, more than 50% of whom were decisionmakers from the leading pork companies in Latin America. Rotecna participated as a Silver sponsor in this second edition of the event, and the company’s sales manager, Oscar Toledano, was one of the speakers at a panel discussion on the challenges and benefits of the transition to free motherhood and its impact on animal welfare. The 333 Experience Congress was an opportunity to share knowledge and innovative trends with experts from the pig sector in Latin America.

On the other hand, on November 29, we were at the XXXI edition of the Golden Pig Awards, held in Zaragoza. Once again, Rotecna was one of the sponsors of this event, which recognises excellence in pig production.

Ready for 2025

As we approach the end of 2024, we are set on an exciting 2025, which we’re already working hard towards. The first quarter of next year will be marked by events of great relevance in the sector, such as the VIV Asia fair, which will take place in Thailand and bring together global industry leaders. In addition, we will participate in FIGAN Zaragoza, one of the most critical meetings in the agricultural field in Spain, which will be held in March in the symbolic capital of the Ebro. These appointments will be an excellent opportunity to establish contacts, present news, and strengthen ties with our partners and customers.

SOMETHING ABOUT

TIÓ DE MURA , A CHRISTMAS TRADITION THAT CELEBRATES MAGIC

Every year, the small and picturesque village of Mura, located in the Bages region in the heart of Catalonia, becomes the setting for one of the region’s most endearing and authentic fairs: the Fira del Tió. This event not only celebrates one of the most iconic traditions of Catalan Christmas but also transports visitors to a world of magic. From its humble origins to becoming a benchmark in the Christmas calendar, the Fira del Tió de Mura is a clear example of how a town can keep its roots alive while embracing visitors from all over.

Origins of the Fira del Tió

The Fira del Tió originates in the ancient Catalan traditions associated with the “tió de Nadal”, a key figure in the region’s Christmas celebrations. The tió, a wooden trunk decorated with a smiling face and covered with a blanket, becomes the protagonist in many a Catalan

home during December. Tradition dictates that children must feed the tió with sweets and fruits during the days leading up to Christmas and then beat it with sticks while singing traditional songs and discovering the gifts and sweets that “are pooped out” from the trunk.

In Mura, this ancestral tradition found a new spur a few decades ago when the neighbours decided to create a fair to pay tribute to the tió and share its history with the world. Since then, the Fira del Tió has evolved into an event that combines culture, crafts, gastronomy, and family activities, attracting thousands of visitors annually.

The Charm of Mura

With its stone architecture, cobbled streets and privileged natural environment, Mura is the ideal setting for the Fira del Tió. This

mediaeval village, nestled in the Sant Llorenç del Munt I l’Obac Natural Park, offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere that seems to be taken from a Christmas story. During the fair, the village is decked out with Christmas decorations, lights and scents of local produce, creating a magical atmosphere that captivates children and adults alike.

Activities for All Tastes

The Fira del Tió is known for its wide variety of activities that seek to entertain, educate and delight visitors. One of the most outstanding proposals is the Tiós creation workshops, one of the most anticipated moments of the fair in which children can create their own Tió with the help of local artisans. With the help of local artisans, the little ones decorate wooden logs with paints, hats and scarves, giving them life and personality.

An Event That Transcends Generations

This Christmas celebration is an opportunity to preserve and transmit a tradition passed down from generation to generation.

Also noteworthy is the Craft and Local Products Market, where handmade objects such as Christmas decorations, nativity scenes, jewellery, textiles, and even local gastronomic products such as nougat, honey, sausages, cheeses or wines. In addition, during the days of the fair, the streets of Mura are filled with live music and Christmas characters that interact with visitors, creating a festive and family atmosphere.

The Fira del Tió is a Christmas celebration, an opportunity to preserve and transmit a tradition passed down from generation to generation. In an increasingly globalised world, events like this are a reminder of the importance of cultural roots and local identity. For families visiting the fair, the experience is not limited to shopping or enjoying the activities; it is also about connecting with a history and a legacy that lasts over time.

With each new edition, the Fira del Tió de Mura manages to surprise and excite its visitors. Its ability to combine tradition, innovation and hospitality makes it an essential event for those who want to experience Christmas authentically and specially. Whether visiting for the first time or returning year after year, the fair always offers something new to discover and enjoy. In short, the Fira del Tió is much more than a Christmas event: it is a celebration of the culture, community and festive spirit representing Mura, Catalonia, and its Christmas traditions.

The town is filled with tiós in the weeks before Christmas.

M. ROSTAN: “ROTECNA OFFERS EFFICIENT AND LONG-LASTING SOLUTIONS”

Since Martin Rostan discovered Rotecna solutions, he has gradually integrated them into the Agrolake farm in Palmitas, Uruguay. It currently has the Feeding Ball, heated plates, different models of feeders, slats, etc. Thanks to these products, he has optimised feeding his animals and improved their welfare. Rostan breaks down the bene ts achieved and explains where the pork sector is in Uruguay.

When did you decide to commit yourself to livestock?

I was always interested in veterinary medicine, and 14 years ago, I started as a

The Agrolake SA farm, located in Uruguay, has many of Rotecna’s solutions, thanks to which it has optimised feed and improved the welfare of its animals.

veterinarian in charge of this farm. When I first started, the former owner gave me the possibility of buying capital from it little by little, and since 2023, I have achieved 100% ownership.

How is the farm distributed?

The facilities have five warehouses: males, gestation, maternity, weaning and fattening. We have Rotecna equipment in all of them.

How many people work in them?

We are currently three people: one in charge of gestation, maternity and weaning; another in charge of

fattening; and me, who works everywhere. I oversee the rest of the farm’s activities, administrative management, purchasing, sales, etc. Being on a small farm, this part can be challenging.

In the maternity wards, the Rotecna Feeding Ball is used. Why did you go for it?

We worked with individual feeds for four years, and finding the right feed point was challenging. We tried to give the sows as much food as they wanted but avoided wasting feed due to excess. It is a very artisanal task and impossible to achieve daily. One day, I saw some videos about the Feeding Ball, and how it worked convinced me so much that I decided to install them in all the maternity wards. It is a very simple dispenser that anyone can use and allows a quick and effective reading of

the females who are eating well and those who, on the contrary, eat little. In my case, I have them installed with the manual hopper.

In maternity, you also have electric heated plates. What advantages do you highlight? The plates are efficient and safe and have a very low energy consumption, which does not significantly impact the energy bill. To regulate them effectively, we rely on the observation of the piglets: that is, if we see that they avoid the plate, we lower the intensity, and when we know that they are piled up on them, we increase it. Because of their advantages, we also have them installed at weaning.

What other Rotecna solutions do you have for weaning?

Weaning is 100% equipped with Rotecna products. Since implementing them, I have confidence in the brand, as it offers efficient and long-lasting solutions that optimise feeding and improve well-being. We have the slats, the PVC profiles to separate the pens, and the heated plates, which we have created a comfort zone where the piglets can sleep. In addition, we installed the TR4 hopper and the Swing R3 Duo, to which the animals adapt very quickly, and the Easy Drinker Mini drinkers, which provide clean water and minimise waste compared to traditional pacifiers.

You also have one of our large capacity feeders for fattening, the TR3D. Why did you choose this option?

The pork industry advances quickly, and knowing that Rotecna always seeks to innovate, I was convinced by the advantages I saw in the TR3D. I assumed that they would adapt to my system very well. We have only had them for three months, but we are already seeing

excellent indicators in terms of the improvement in the conversion rate. Something no less important is the ease of handling since its ten adjustment points allow you to find the best point for each batch and the loading comfort, which we can do straightforwardly due to its height.

What are your main health concerns?

As a veterinarian, I have little work to do on my farm, as it is very stable in terms of health. I only incorporate liquid genetics from Spain to renew the lines.

What biosecurity measures do you have on your farm?

Outsiders are prohibited from entering; we do not feature

live animals, only semen. In this way, we renew genetics and maintain a more stable health status.

Finally, what is your vision of the pork sector in Uruguay?

Uruguay has significant advantages for pig farming, thanks to its large production of raw materials such as corn and soybeans. In addition, the country is recognised worldwide for the quality of its beef and the confidence in its exporting companies. Beef export channels, which are very active, could also be used for pork. However, we currently need the technical means to export it, which limits this option in the short term, although it is possible. On the other hand,

in the domestic market, pork consumption is high, reaching approximately 20 kg per person per year, above the consumption of chicken meat but still below beef, which exceeds 40 kg. Of those 20 kg of pork, 85% corresponds to imports. Although replacing this imported meat with local production of higher quality is a challenge, it represents a great opportunity since the demand already exists. To conquer the market that imported meat has today, more than the individual effort of the producers is needed. The support of the entire production chain and State policies that promote and make pig production attractive in Uruguay are necessary.

I. SALAET: “ACIDIFICATION INSIDE FARMS IMPROVES ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS AND REDUCES THE

RISK OF DISEASE”

With years of experience in the fertilisation sector, Fertinagro has been studying and developing on-farm slurry acidi cation projects for more than a decade. To improve the sanitary status inside the warehouses and the revaluation of the slurry in its subsequent application to the eld, acidi cation is presented as one of the best solutions. We spoke with Ignasi Salaet, deputy director of the R+D+i department at Fertinagro Biotech.

How long have you been working on the acidification of slurry?

We have been working on acidification projects for more than 10 years and have begun to develop intensive work in this area. Beyond the laboratory, we have been developing firm projects inside pig farms for about four and a half years. The truth is that, initially, we considered acidification, beyond slurry management, as a health issue to reduce ammonia emissions inside the warehouses and

Applying the slurry resulting from acidi cation as an organic fertiliser increases production in a cereal eld by 15 to 20% compared to other fertilisers.

the health problems that this entails, for example, in the fight against respiratory diseases such as PRRS. Ultimately, we are a fertiliser company, so we also think about how to treat the slurry and its subsequent reuse as organic fertiliser.

How do you work on the acidification on the farm?

We apply acidification inside the houses, which is a little more complex than outside since the environment is different and significant amounts of acid must be handled in a space with live animals. However, by carrying out this action inside, the environmental conditions of the buildings improve, and the risks of suffering from certain airborne diseases are reduced.

What is acidification for those who still need to get involved with this technology?

It is a simple process. Ammonia is a substance in a slurry that, depending on the pH, is in ionic

Cereal production increases by up to 20% compared to other fertilizers.

form, so it remains in liquid, or gas, with what it emits into the air. So, what we try to achieve with acidification directly in the pits is to lower from a pH of between 8.5 and 9, which the slurry can have inside the farm, to a pH of 5, and, in addition, to make it not in gaseous form, but in ionic form, which helps us to retain the nitrogen in the slurry, something that will mean an added value in its possible use as fertiliser.

What are the main benefits of slurry acidification?

The main benefit is the retention of ammonia since it is not emitted into the environment, and we eliminate it from the production area, in addition to retaining nitrogen in the slurry, which, as we have mentioned, increases its value as a fertiliser. Another benefit is the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. When you reduce the pH below 4.5, methane production is reduced, which also influences the value of the organic matter in the slurry. Finally, a third benefit, although this depends more on the type of acid used, is that we are introducing sulfate into the slurry, essential for the proper functioning of nitrogen in the field, which increases the fertiliser value of the slurry.

Is acidification a tremendous economic investment for the farmer?

There are two types of investment here: one thing is the fungible cost, and the other is all the instrumentation necessary for acidification. As for the cost of acid, which is the one I know most professionally, the good news is that we work with a urea inhibitor inside the warehouses, which reduces acid consumption by almost 90% and, therefore, the costs of acidification. For example, on a farm with 2,000 fattening places, the costs of acidification products are about 1,500 euros per year, an acceptable

cost. However, apart from this, we have all the necessary instrumentation. There is a very technological one that allows total control of the acidification process, but it can have a higher cost. In this sense, some investments range between 15,000 and 18,000 euros for a house of 1,000 pigs. Despite everything, as we have observed in our work in different projects in Catalonia and Aragon, with farmers and veterinarians, they all agree in highlighting the benefits of acidification, with a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, an improvement in animal welfare, better conversion rates in production and a reduction in the use of antibiotics. So, there is a clear return on investment.

We have mentioned that most of the projects were initiated mainly due to a health concern inside the farms, but in the end, you are a fertilisation company. What are the benefits of acidification in the subsequent use of slurry as an organic fertiliser?

As a fertiliser company that invests in R+D, we have carried out different tests to demonstrate what we more or less already thought was evident: the slurry resulting from acidification is better than untreated slurry. It is for several reasons: it contains more nitrogen, although this can be a double-edged sword because, in the end, you have a maximum amount of nitrogen to apply to the soil; it contains a more significant amount of organic matter and also sulphur, essential for the proper functioning of nitrogen in the soil. Another critical point is the application of slurry and the application system that now, by law, is with hanging tubes, which deposits the slurry on the surface, so with an alkaline pH and on a wide surface, a lot of nitrogen is lost: this is significantly reduced if the slurry is acidified. By applying this slurry as an organic fertiliser

“We have made a strong commitment to acidi cation and the application of biostimulant products, as we believe that it works and at an a ordable price, with a highly positive return”.

with more nitrogen and the presence of sulphur, cereal production in winter increases between 15-20% compared to other fertilisers.

What other business challenges are you working on to improve slurry fertilisation?

Generally, large fertiliser companies have mines or gas; that is, they have the raw material. We have neither one nor the other, so we have specialised first in the circulation of nutrients and then in making them efficient, and this is where we enter the world of biostimulants. In this sense, as we could not bring all the slurry to the factory, we decided to take the opposite route: develop a biostimulant and transport it to the farm to apply it to the slurry there. Specifically, we have two patents for biostimulant products injected directly into slurry, increasing productivity added to acidification. In other words, with the application of slurry with

biostimulants, we achieve 15% more production in the field, which is added to the other 15% that we already had with the application of slurry treated by acidification.

Is acidification a feasible present and future solution in managing slurry on pig farms?

The treatment and handling of slurry is undoubtedly challenging for the entire sector. Many techniques can be used to recover nitrogen from slurry; there are different MTDS on the market, and, in our case, due to our know-how, we have made a strong commitment to acidification and the application of biostimulant products, as we believe that it works and at an affordable price, with a highly positive return. What is certain is that acidification has many advantages, such as reducing emissions, improving pig production, and the subsequent reuse of slurry as fertiliser.

PIG PRODUCTION IN

PORK PRODUCTION GROWS IN COLOMBIA

The pork sector in Colombia has shown remarkable growth in the last decade and has positioned itself as one of the country’s key drivers of agricultural production. With sustained growth and a 137.5% increase in production since 2012, the country ranks fifth among the largest pork producers in Latin America. This growth has been driven by technological advances, a significant increase in consumption, and the work carried out by the leading professional associations in the country’s pork sector. However, the market faces challenges, such as dependence on imports to meet growing demand and the impact of production costs.

Size and structure of the sector

In 2023, Colombia slaughtered 5.78 million pigs and produced 564,780 tons of pork, marking a growth of 24.18% between 2019 and 2023 (Table 1), the most significant increase among

The country has logged a 24% increase in pork production, although it remains dependent on imports to meet domestic demand.

the different pork sectors in the Americas. This notable rise places the country as the fifth largest producer in Latin America, behind Brazil, Mexico, Argentina and Chile.

In 2023, the Colombian pork sector had a census of 10.64 million pigs spread over 190,000 farms. Antioquia, Valle del Cauca and Bogotá regions are responsible for much of the production since 75% of Colombian pork production comes from these three regions. These areas combine technified and backyard systems, although the trend is towards greater industrialisation to increase production efficiency. In this sense, 3% of technified farms already contribute 72% of the pigs slaughtered.

Domestic consumption

Pork consumption in Colombia reached 703,000 tons in 2023, with a consumption of 13.5 kilos

per capita per year. This reflects an increase of 487% in the last decade, the highest in Latin America. Although pork still ranks third in animal protein preference, behind chicken (46.8 kg per capita) and beef (23.1 kg), consumption is expected to exceed 15 kg per capita by 2025. This growth has been driven by promotional campaigns, which seek to strengthen the positioning of pork in the local market.

Imports and exports

Despite the strong growth of national production, Colombia remains a deficit market since it needs to cover the growing domestic demand. Therefore, they need to import large quantities of pork, which has registered an increase of 21% between 2019 and 2023. In 2023, 140,161 tons of pork were imported, mainly from the United States (68%), Canada (14.8%), Chile (13.8%) and Spain (3.3%). These imports consist primarily of frozen meat (88.9%), offal

and processed products. In contrast, Colombian exports were minimal, with only 1,950 tons exported that year.

Spain, one of the leading suppliers to the Colombian market, exported 4,640 tons in 2023, standing out in products such as bacon, cured hams and sausages. The Spanish market share, however, has decreased slightly compared to previous years.

Perspectives

With a projected growth of 6.2% in production and a

1.7% increase in domestic consumption in 2023, the Colombian pork sector is emerging as a key driver of the country’s agricultural economy. The outlook for 2025 is optimistic, with greater mechanisation of farms and constantly rising domestic consumption, which could reduce dependence on imports in the medium term.

In addition, Colombia seeks to consolidate its sanitary status and advance in the technification of the pork industry, aligning itself with international standards. This includes adopting more sustainable and ethical practices that reduce costs and meet the growing expectations of local and global consumers.
