Fairs are the best shop windows, a place where businesses have the opportunity to show our products and make direct contact with our potential clients. If you know which fairs to choose to attend, investing in them is always a guarantee of success. As a businessman with a clear aim of internationalising (Rotecna is present in over 80 countries), this year, we are again at EuroTier 2014, the leading fair in our sector, which we will use to present the firm’s latest novelties.

One of the advantages of EuroTier for us is that, it is not only a place to exhibit, but also a source of information, a thermometer to measure the health of the sector and a place to exchange opinions and analyse the new tendencies. Thus, it enables us to go on working and investing in innovation to create new products that respond to the requirements of the farmers.

OCTOBER 2014 EDITION: Rotecna, s.a.- POL. IND. NAU-3, 25310 AGRAMUNT (LLEIDA) SPAIN DIRECTOR: GENER ROMEU EDITION/PRODUCTION/DESIGN: Montse GUERRERO EDITOR: TAMARA LOMBARDO TRADUCTION: CHRIS BOSWELL Print: Imprenta barnola ISSN: L-41-2007

DIGITAL VERSION / issuu.com/rotecnapress Rotecna's World's editors accept no liability for contributor's opinion.

Over the year, we have attended in other specialised fairs all over the world, like Agrofarm Russia or World Pork Expo (USA) and, for 2015, we are already working to attend VIV Asia, VIV Russia and FIGAN (Spain). Now it’s the turn of EuroTier 2014, where we will be waiting for you to visit us at our stand: Hall 11 Stand E29. At the company level, and wanting to emphasise the weight of energy costs on the current large-scale farms, it is very important to seek those products that are most efficient, energetically speaking. Thus, and sure of the efficiency of our products, in Rotecna we have submitted our electric heated plates to an independent audit (carried out by SGS, a world leader in auditing services) to compare their consumption with the most representative models on the market. The result was what we expected; the Rotecna electric plates are more efficient, with lower consumption at the same temperature. That confirms that there can be an energy saving of up to 50% between two apparently very similar products. Gener Romeu

Rotecna is going to EuroTier 2014 to present its latest novelties This will be the sixth edition that the company has decided to send the necessary resources to this fair that is a showcase at the European and international levels.

Once again, Rotecna is going to Hanover in Germany from the 11th to the 14th of November to take part in EuroTier 2014. Convinced of the importance of taking part in the main events in the sector, Rotecna has had its own stand at EuroTier since 2004 (and since 1996 with products). Since the first edition in 1993, EuroTier has evolved as a fair, growing from year to year until it has become a reference point in the animal production sector and, especially, among the companies that produce technological equipment for pig farms. Since 1996, the fair has been held in the Hanover fairground and, in this time, it has grown from just over 1,000 exhibitors to nearly 2,500 in 2012, half of who were, moreover international exhibitors. The number of visitors has also grown, reaching 160,000 in the last edition. These figures illustrate the positive evolution of the event.

SOMETHINGABOUT... Magnificent landscapes,

The person in charge of fairs at Rotecna, Montse Guerrero, recalls that “the company’s first contact with EuroTier was in 2004, when we went with a 90 square-metre stand. We have been to each edition since then”. Over that time, the company has grown and this is apparent at the fair: increasing the exhibition area to 160 square metres of this year’s edition and taking advantage of the stay there to present our new products to the market. “Being present in fairs is key to our marketing activity with commercial aims, as they are a showcase to the world to promote our brand and display our products”, Montse adds. In this EuroTier 2014, Rotecna will display some of its most successful products and present some of the new products in 2014, a highlight of which is the company’s move to create a new line of products with injected polypropylene panels for separators, and the addition to the already wide range of dispensers of the new Five, the first Rotecna dispenser that is distributed unassembled to optimise transport. On the other hand, Rotecna’s head of sale for Western Europe, Òscar Toledano, values the company’s presence at EuroTier positively: “In recent years, EuroTier has

Let us look at the wide choice of winter resorts in Lleida where you can ski and enjoy other activities in the snow, Baqueira Beret is one of the largest in Spain with 78 runs and over 120 kilometres for downhill skiing. In the Aran Valley, it is the only station in the country on the north face of the Pyrenees, which means it enjoys large snowfalls of very good quality snow. It is precisely these two factors, the amount and quality of the snow, together with good installations and the services that Baqueira Beret offers the skier that make this one of the most highly regarded in the Lleida Pyrenees, but also one of the most expensive. A one-day adult ski pass for the 2013/2014 season cost euros 47. The highest run in the Pyrenees of Lleida is in Boí Taüll Resort, with and total of 45 kilometres and one of the most complete snowparks in the Pyrenees. One of its main draws is that it is a large complex without crowds or queues.

The stations of Port Ainé and Espot Esquí in the Pallars Sobirà district, near the National Park of Aigüestortes i l’Estany de Sant Maurici, are both part of the SkiPallars tourist complex and owned by the Catalan regional government. The same district is also home to the municipally owned and run station of Tavascan. One of the main advantages of these three

become consolidated as a world-wide reference in technology for pig installations. In this sense, it is the most important fair for Rotecna”. According to Òscar, one of the main draws of EuroTier is that as well as being an exhibition place, it is also a meeting point. “One of the advantages of the fair is that over these four days and under one roof, we can meet our distributors, make contacts with new clients and present the company’s new products. These are days of very hard work, but also very productive”. Thus, the presence at EuroTier reinforces the work of the sales team during the year with visits to various countries to promote the Rotecna brand and products.

BRAZIL INCREASES ITS EXPORTS TO RUSSIA AND HONG KONG After the Russian ban on pig meat from the European Union, Brazil has increased its exports to Russia. During August, Russia imported 16.2% more pig meat from Brazil. This was 14,500 tonnes with an estimated value of 70.7 million dollars, 82.5% more than in August 2013. The Russian market now receives 34.4% of the total pig meat that Brazil exports monthly.

However, between January and August the total volume of exports from Brazil to Russia and Hong Kong fell by 7,08%, but rose in value by 10.27%, with prices 33% higher.

Meanwhile, the exports to Hong Kong represent 23.12% of the total of Brazilian pig meat destined to export. In August, Brazil sold 9,749 tonnes of pork to Hong Kong, an increase of 9.65% compared with August 2013.

The Brazilian Association of Animal Protein also expects to see an increase in the export figures by volume through the new slaughterhouses adapted to export to Russia.

The Brazilian states with the highest export sales in 2014 are, from largest to smallest: Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul, Minas Gerais, Paraná and Goiás.

LLEIDA, OVER 450 KM OF SKI RUNS stations is that they offer the skier a joint pass. However, each complex has its own features: Espot Esquí is ideal for people seeking a quiet family atmosphere to ski far from the crowds, Port Ainé has very good quality powder snow between December and April and is perfect for those who are just starting to ski and finally, Tavascan has a crosscountry circuit unique to the Pyrenees, and a variety of runs for all levels where you can also go snowboarding. The last of the downhill ski stations in the Lleida Pyrenees is Port del Compte, the station of Central Catalonia, with 50 kilometres of wide runs and slopes for all levels. Finally, there are five stations in the Lleida Pyrenees that offer the lovers of cross-country skiing the chance to practice in installations surrounded by areas of outstanding natural beauty. These are Aransa and Lles de Cerdanya in the Cerdanya, Sant Joan de l’Erm and Tuixent la Vansa in the Alt Urgell, and Virós Vallferrera in the Pallars Sobirà. They have a total of 160 kilometres of marked tracks and a quiet, familyfriendly atmosphere. As well as downhill and cross-country skiing, the majority of the Lleida resorts offer a wide range of

activities to enjoy the landscape and the snow, including snow-shoeing, excursions and routes with dog sleds, ski bikes, heli-ski or the possibility of helicopter rides to enjoy unique panoramas over the Pyrenees. Over 1.2 million passes sold in the 2013/2014 season During the last season, Baqueira Beret was the station with the most skiers, mainly Spanish and French, and sold more than 770,000 ski passes, which was 64% of the total of the 11 stations in Lleida province (1,206,030). The tourism in the snow is undoubtedly the main economic activity in the Lleida Pyrenees with an impact of 250 million Euros in the area. The rest of the year, adventure sports and rural tourism are growing in importance with the aim of avoiding the seasonal effects of snow-based tourism. Some ski stations are expected to open at the end of November. However, the 2014/2015 ski season will not get fully going, as usual, until the long holiday weekend of the Spanish Constitution, on the first full weekend in December, and should last until April if the weather allows it.

Number of breeding sows: 3,300, Total occupation of the farrowing installations: 28 days Farrowing places: 720 Days of heating per year: 250,

We can calculate the energy costs of running the plates for a year, bearing in mind the market price of electricity (0.089 euros/kWh). The results show that the annual consumption for this farm with Rotecna plates is euros 22,903, the lowest for all the models studied. If we comparison this with the competitors’ plates, we see that the energy costs are higher by between 11% and 103%, in the later case rising to euros 46,000 per year.

A STUDY BY SGS CONFIRMS THAT THE ROTECNA ELECTRICAL HEATED PLATE IS THE MOST EFFICIENT IN ENERGY CONSUMPTION The company, World leader in auditory services, compared the six most representative models of plates on the market Like any business, pig production requires costs to be kept down to improve profits. One of the costs of pig farms is energy, especially in farrowing. The piglets, with much higher temperature requirements than the sows, require a localised heat source, like the one supplied by heated plates. To cover this need, Rotecna has a wide range of plates, both electric and water, that adapt to the great variety of installations that can be found nowadays. Moreover, Rotecna strives to provide the highest energy efficiency to give the greatest comfort to the piglets and the lowest cost. This is shown in the “Heating Plates” (July 2014) THE RESULTS comparative study of electrical heating for animal SHOW THAT THE rearing, by SGS, the Swiss company that leads the market in auditing services to companies. With over 130 ANNUAL of experience and a network of 1,650 offices and CONSUMPTION laboratories around the world and its staff of over 80,000, SGS has consolidated its position as the market FOR THIS FARM leader in inspection, verification, tests and certification. The quality, professionalism and rigour of its work WITH ROTECNA maintain the unarguable reputation of the results that PLATES IS EUROS SGS presents in its reports.

22,903, THE LOWEST FOR ALL THE MODELS STUDIED.

In the study carried out in the SGS laboratory in July, the full version of which is available on the Rotecna web, the six most representative electrical plates on the market from five companies, of similar size (1200mm x 500mm)) and made of different materials (plastic, polymer or stainless steel) were compared. The test evaluated the

energy consumption of the plates over an hour, with the surface temperature stabilised at 37ºC ± 2ºC and the room temperature of 22 ± 2ºC. The results corroborated what Rotecna already knew: its electric heated plate was the leader in energy efficiency, with the lowest consumption (59.57 Wh) for the same surface temperature. The high performance of the Rotecna plate comes from its maximum use of the heat generated, thanks to the sealed air chamber on the bottom, but even more so from the direct contact of the electrical resistance with the upper surface of the plate. If we compare it with the competitors’ plates, whose consumption can be as high as 120.95 Wh in the case of the Mik, using Rotecna plates can mean savings of up to 50%. The results of the test also show the rapid stabilisation of the temperature that is achieved with the Rotecna plate, which enables the optimum temperature for the piglet to be reached in only 20 minutes. Moreover, the plastic of the Rotecna plates provides the young animals with the maximum welfare, thanks to their comfort and insulating properties, that preserve the piglets’ own heat and enable the plates to switch off some days earlier. In contrast, the other materials absorb the body heat of the animals if the plates are not working and thus it is not advisable to switch them off. This characteristic contributes to the differential in energy consumption being even higher than what is shown.”

PIG PRICES FALL ALL OVER EUROPE The European pig sector is experiencing a generalised tendency of price decreases. Weak demand and the closure of the Russian market have led to a drop in the market prices in the principal producing countries. Although the situation varies between countries, these values are expected to continue falling over coming weeks. In Spain, prices have been falling continuously for 12 weeks from July and to 1.212 euros/kilo live weight in the last market in September. The handling of the fall in Spain in August has been the most adequate in line with the interests of production in the short term. It remains to be seen if the massive imports of European meat will block the sales to the main markets from Spanish slaughterhouses in the autumn.

Over the coming weeks, it is expected that the downward tendency will continue for the market rates in Europe, unless there is a rise in demand from China, as a result of the start of Chinese exports of pig meat to Russia.

In such other countries as France, various promotions have helped to move stocks without problems, although a large number of pigs being sacrificed has eroded prices.

In Germany, the reference prices had registered a heavy fall in mid September. The main reasons are the accumulated 2% decrease in domestic consumption over the last 7 months, and the difficulties for exporting due to the Russia embargo.

Consumption (kWh/ farrowing pen per year)

In Germany, the reference prices had registered a heavy fall in mid September. The main reasons are the accumulated 2% decrease in domestic consumption over the last 7 months, and the difficulties for exporting due to the Russia embargo.

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE PLATES STUDIES Make

If we apply these results to the farrowing places, the energy consumption of the Rotecna plate is 357.4 kWh/for each farrowing pen per year, equivalent to a cost of 31.8 €/farrowing pen per year at the current market price for energy (0.089 €/kWh). Compared with the other plates studied, the cost of the one by Rotecna can mean savings of up to 50%, compared with other less efficient ones.

we need to study the feed system we will install on our farm very carefully to optimise the costs as much as possible.

CHILE CONSOLIDATES ITSELF IN MARKETS WITH HIGH REQUIREMENTS The growth of the pig sector in Chile has been more than notable over recent decades. The country’s pig production doubled between 2000 and 2010, going from slightly over 260 thousand tonnes in 2000 to more than 500 thousand tonnes a decade later. These data illustrate the moment of expansion the pig sector in Chile finds itself in, and which is also investing heavily to improve the quality of its products and processes. Among the targets is to increase domestic pork consumption (19.4 kg/person), but especially, maintain and extend its presence in international markets with high requirements, like Japan, South Korea, China and the European Union.

volume of meat production, after the poultry sector. Chile currently has some 210,000 technified sows, each of which weans an average of 28.76 piglets per year. According to the latest data, the average of live births has increased significantly to 12.89 live piglets born per litter. By producing area, the Region of Libertador

Exports

The total value of pig meat exports from Chile has grown at an annual average of 14.7% over the last decade. In 2012, it reached the figure of 532.7 million dollars, of which 96.7% corresponded to meat and edible offal and 2.8% to prepared or preserved products for consumption. The exports of live animals reached 1.8 million dollars the same year.

If there is one factor to be highlighted in pig production in Chile, this is exports. According to the United States

Production In 2013, pork production in Chile was 38% of total meat production, after exceeding 550,000 tonnes, according to data published by Asprocer (Association of Pig Producers of Chile). This figure was a slight fall (5.8%) from the previous year, which can partly be explained by the closure of the Valle del Huasco agro-industrial complex in December 2012. This large project had to close in full development after a conflict that arose from the smell generated by problems in the slurry management systems. However, if we exclude this incident, Chile maintained a good productive trajectory in 2013, with an estimated growth of between 1.2 and 1.5% in volume, a percentage that it is forecast to maintain throughout 2014, and that situates the pig sector as the second in importance in the country by

Bernardo O’Higgins concentrated over 80% of Chile’s pig production, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) in 2012 and, year after year, it has risen in importance. The second most important area, although losing participation in recent years, is the Metropolitan Region, with 10.5% of the national total. Third place is for the Region of El Maule that grew slowly before stabilising at around 6%.

Consumption The consumption of pig meat per person has also grown steadily in Chile. Indeed, maintaining this increase is one of the main objectives facing the sector in the coming years. Although pork was ranked as the second favourite meat among Chileans in 2011, over the last two years beef has risen and

Although the closure of the Huasco project in the north of the country also affected Chilean exports of pig meat that fell by 9.2% in volume and 14.1% in value, Chile exported over 40% of its production, and this rose to 49% in 2013. Moreover, since 2011 Chile is one of the few countries that exports to China, for its high health requirements. In 2013, 11% of its exports by value were sent to the Asian giant. Robustness, functionality and ease of handling are some of the advantages of this new dispenser. It offers the farmer the possibility to install for opening the ball by pulling or tubular download. With this, the company aims to adapt the dispenser to the different types of existing installations.

ADVANTAGES Stackable, which reduces transport by 50% More economical Quick and easy assembling Very easy to adjust

However, it must be taken into account that each farm has its peculiarities, and each farmer has his or her own way of working, so that each farm should install the model of dispenser that adapts better to the necessities and will give the highest performance.

Like Rotecna’s other dispenser models, the FIVE enables to adjust with precision the amount of feed to be supplied to each animal. The container has conical shape and it is translucent to visualize its inside. Moreover the new dispenser has a lid that makes it easier to clean it.

Aware of the importance of this product among the equipment for the pig sector, Rotecna has a wide range of dispensers, from the most complete models to the most basic, and that adapt to all kinds of installations and necessities.

The widest range on the market With the addition of the FIVE, Rotecna has consolidated itself as the company in the sector with the widest range of dispensers on the market, with five totally differentiated models.

New dispenser Five To complete its family of dispensers, Rotecna has designed the new FIVE: a dispenser with a capacity of 7 litres and a ball system. It is the company’s first dispenser that is distributed unassembled to optimise transport and achieve significant savings, reducing transport costs by 50%. On the other hand, it must be highlighted that the

The first model the company launched was the Dosimatic, 22 years ago, a dispenser with a hatch system, whose robust and functional design has helped its success. This product is available with a maximum capacity of 6 or 10 litres. Its robustness and simplicity of handling are among its main attractions.

The Clutch dispenser is the firm’s most complex and sophisticated model with an exclusive clutch system with an optical signal that, on being activated, individually deactivates the fall of the feed. In two sizes (6 and 10 litre capacity), the Clutch dispenser has an endless range of possibilities: it is precise and comfortable to adjust, easily dismounted for full cleaning, it allows the selection of two types of feed, it has a medicalisation flap and a file clip. With time, Rotecna has extended its range of dispensers. With the Simplex D-2, the company presented its first model with a ball system. This dispenser is easy to adjust and is available in two sizes (6 and 10 litres).

the dispenser’s life and keeps the feed always fresh.

More recently, Rotecna designed the FOUR, with a 7-litre capacity. One of its main characteristics is its stainless steel feed measuring and the anti-UVA treatment of the plastic, that lengthens

Finally, the FIVE is Rotecna’s big bid for 2014; with it, the firm completes its wide range of dispensers that efficiently cover all the necessities of farmers for questions of feed.

Rationing exactly the daily feed dose that the animals will receive enables the feed requirements to be covered while optimising feed consumption and reducing wastage, which affects the economic and productive balance of the farm. In this sense, it is a fact that dispensers are by far the most widely used feed systems for sows in the gestation and farrowing phases, as they mean that the right dose of feed can be precisely regulated for each animal.

226

Regarding imports, according to data published by Asprocer, in 2013 these increased by 99% over the previous year, reaching 60,000 tonnes. This situation directly harms the local producers, who have no chance to export and cannot compete with the low prices of the imported products. These products mainly come from the United States (58%), Canada (31%) and Brazil (10%). The pig meat imported into Chile is basically frozen cuts and de-boned meat, respectively 55% and 38% of the total.
