2014, A YEAR OF CONSOLIDATION
The Russian veto has been the thorn in the side of European producers and the pig industry in 2014. Strategic agricultural sectors, like pig farming or fruit and vegetable growing, have been immersed in an agricultural crisis, not one that is not really agricultural, but rather the effects of a political conflict that has spread to those who least expected it.

The professionalisation of the sector, the modernisation and technification of pig farms and good production figures have not been enough to make this as good a year as expected. Exports have fallen, as have the sales prices, and this has spread a feeling of uncertainty in the sector about the coming months. Despite this, at the productive level, the sector is at a good moment and prepared to take on new challenges with the aim of producing more and better. So, we must face 2015 with optimism! In our field of business, EuroTier last November showed us that, at Rotecna, we are doing things well. The novelties we presented at the fair generated a very good response from our clients and the farmers who came to see them. Thus, despite the understandable uncertainty that is palpable, the pig sector faces the future with the aim of continuing to grow and to do so, wagering on those products for the farms that enable them to be more efficient energetically and achieve the maximum performance. Thus, with the aim of continuing to respond to the sector’s needs, in Rotecna, we will keep on investing in R+D+i to supply the market with new products and solutions.

2014,
A YEAR OF CONSOLIDATION modernisation over recent years. Thus, 2014 has again been “a year of pushing to create new products, ratifying us as the company with the widest range of products on the market for the pig sector and with a huge capacity for innovation”, in Izquierdo’s words.

“Over recent years, the company has grown exponentially and in 2014 we could say we have seen the consolidation of Rotecna leadership as a specialist in equipment for the pig sector.” That is how Rotecna’s general manager, Amable Izquierdo, summed up this year.

‘CAGANER’,
The Christmas holidays are closely linked to many traditions and customs that go beyond the religious celebration. The Christmas tree, the Christmas markets, “cagar el tió” or setting up a nativity scene, are some of the most deeply rooted traditions in Catalonia around these dates, without forgetting the hearty meals and gatherings of friends and family.
of politicians, sports personalities and the famous, real or fictitious, into caganers for the nativity scene every year. An example is the Catalan familyrun business, Caganer.com, with a catalogue of 350 different caganers and a production of up to 30,000 figurines per year.
In Catalan popular culture, building the nativity scene or crèche is almost an inescapable tradition, more so if there are small children in the house. Mary, the baby Jesus, Joseph, an ox and a donkey, angels, the Magi and the shepherds are the main characters of this miniature depiction of the birth of Jesus. However, if there is one figure who has become the star of the crèche in Catalonia, this is the caganer, literally the defecator.
Among the characters who have been converted into caganer, there are politicians like the US president, Barack Obama, the German chancellor, Angela Merkel, or the Spanish prime minister, Mariano Rajoy. There are also versions of the writer William Shakespeare, the singers Madonna or Freddie Mercury, as well as a long list of footballers including Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi.
The traditional figure of the caganer is a typical Catalan peasant, squatting down, wearing a white shirt, dark trousers and a red barretina (a typical Catalan cap), often smoking a pipe, usually defecating under a bridge, behind a haystack or in some other corner of the nativity scene. In recent years, this figure has gained in popularity to the point that there are now companies who convert the image
Famous caganers
The major growth of the company over these years has meant the need for new investments to guarantee our commitment to the best service to our clients. “It must be remembered that you cannot be the champion of the league if you don’t have the best resources”, Izquierdo assures. He adds, “This way, in parallel to the growth of the company, we have continued investing in improving our resources, installations, personnel,... to achieve new success”. In line with this philosophy, in 2014, Rotecna has upgraded and started using the new buildings acquired at the end of 2013, which have extended the company’s production area from 20,000 to 35,000 square metres.
The new distribution of spaces has enabled Rotecna to enlarge its productive capacity and storage space, and thus improve the attention and service to its clients.
New markets On the other hand, another of the firm’s lines of work is to increase the international impact of the Rotecna brand. As well as being a year of consolidation of the company on the markets where it was already present, 2014 has seen the opening of new markets so that we are now present in over 80 countries. “Some of the territories where we are present are in a full process of expansion of the sector, which has enabled us to launch great projects”, Izquierdo explains and adds that, “the most positive of all is that in Rotecna we have the capacity to give our clients the response they need in time, quantity and quality”. By regions, Rotecna’s growth over the last year has been especially
good on the South-American market, more specifically, in Brazil, where this penetration is expected to continue over the coming year. Our growing presence on the Asian market is also notable.
“the most
With all this, the export market currently takes up over 60% of Rotecna’s turnover. The rest is on the Spanish market, which has grown continuously over the last three years. This positive tendency began with the farmers’ need to adapt their installations to the Animal Welfare legislation. Now, this investment is continuing, despite the uncertainty in the forecasts for the coming year.
capacity to give
Challenges for 2015 “In 2015, Rotecna’s target is to continue in the same line of growth, concentrating on those aspects that define us, namely internationalisation and innovation”, Izquierdo summarised. In this sense, for the new year, Brazil and Russia are two strategic markets where Rotecna aims to increase its presence.
positive of all is that in Rotecna we have the our clients the response they need in time, quantity and quality”. Finally, as well as the annual investment in innovation, design and the creation of new products, Izquierdo stated that among the investments planned for the new year, “Rotecna will purchase new machines to extend and renew the injection section with more advanced technology. We will also continue to invest in improving the company’s logistics and storage capacity”.
THE MOST POPULAR IN THE NATIVITY explanation. What is known is that it dates from the 18th century, in the full Baroque epoch, when the crèches adopted the realism of the cultural, artistic and architectural movement of the times. So, it came about that by the end of the 18th century, there were practically no nativity scenes in Catalonia without a caganer, who was believed to bring luck, health and peace. Moreover, the fact that he was defecating symbolised the act of fertilising the earth for the coming year. Although the caganer has deep roots in popular culture in Catalonia, he is not exclusively Catalan. There are other places where this character is also present in the crèches. These
include Múrcia, Naples and Portugal, where the caganer is known respectively as the cagones, cacone or pastore che caca and cagões. On the other hand, the popularity of the caganer in Catalonia led to the creation of the association Amics del Caganer (Friends of the Caganer) at Christmas 1990. This association works to promote this figure, report each year’s novelties from the makers and organise exhibitions of caganers, among other activities. Moreover, for Christmas, the entity organises an annual supper for its members where the “Caganer de l’Any” (Caganer of the Year) award is presented. This is given to the public personage who stands out most for his or her
contribution to spreading and promoting this figure. The ‘caganer’ goes international The growing popularity of the caganer, its promotion and presence in the great Christmas markets, like the Santa Llúcia market in Barcelona, have led to its internationalisation. Thus, the sales of this figurine are not restricted to Catalonia and the rest of Spain, and some of the craft makers of these figures have widened their market to other countries like the United States, Singapore or Japan. The new ‘caganers’ for 2014. Photo: Caganer.com.
There are actor caganers like Groucho Marx or Humphrey Bogart and the world of fiction also has its own, with Gollum from the Lord of the Rings, C3PO, Captain America, Ironman or Mario Bross, among many others. Where did this come from? The origins of the caganer as a figure in the nativity scene are very vague and there is no specific date or any concrete

Brazil is the country which has benefited most from the Russian veto that has affected the European pig sector so seriously, and this is reflected in the figures. Between January and September of this year, Russia bought over 40% of the pig meat that Brazil exports. In detail, in the first nine months of 2014, Russia imported 129,500 tonnes of pork from Brazil at a value of $562.5 million, according to data from

This association states that the provision of new Brazilian slaughterhouses by Russia has meant a gradual increase in exports from the Brazilian market, with some producers even abandoning other markets to focus on the demand from Russia.
On the other hand, at the end of 2014, Brazil has also sent a first shipment of fresh pig meat to the United States, which the government interprets as a sign of international confidence in its health checks. To date, the United States has given two Brazilian plants permission to sell fresh or refrigerated meat.
After Russia, the leading purchasers of Brazilian pig meat
With this, Brazil has consolidated its place as the world’s fourth pig meat exporter and the leader in Latin America, according to data from the Brazilian Association of Animal Protein. In 2013, Brazil invoiced $1,350 million on the international markets, equivalent to 513,000 tonnes of pork. Up to October 2014, exports had already reached $1,330 million and 410,000 tonnes of pork.

To ensure the welfare of the animals, it is essential to adapt the size of the pens to the physical characteristics of each phase of production. The divider panels, made in various materials, are the ideal components for this purpose. However, the type of panel installed on the farm ensures a greater or lesser resistance and durability of the system of dividers. That is why, when deciding which panels to install, the farmer must take into consideration two basic characteristics: their high resistance to the action and strength of the animals, and that they have a smooth surface, non-absorbent, to facilitate cleaning and disinfection.
Another of the main advantages of the Rotecna injected panels is their weight, much lighter than concrete or metal structures, which gives them multiple benefits for transport, installation and handling. These characteristics guarantee their functionality and good performance on the farm.
Injected panels
Models: blind and ventilated
With this in mind, to give effective and efficient responses to the needs of the farmers for housing animals, Rotecna’s R+D department has designed a new family of products: the injected panels for pen divisions. Thanks to the material used in these panels being highly resistant to corrosion by pig slurry, the chemical products used for disinfection and other corrosive agents, they guarantee the farmer high durability. Moreover, their smooth surface facilitates cleaning and hygiene to maintain them always in a perfect state and optimal conditions of sanitation.
The client is offered two different models in the new range of Rotecna panels, blind and ventilated. With standard dimensions of 1000x1200x50mm, the panels can be produced and supplied in any size required by the client, with exactly the same characteristics and advantages.
The internal structure has a grid shape. This design means that the welding (hot plate system) is homogeneous, stable and firm, characteristics that, added to the hermetical sealing, give our panels the robustness that ensures great durability and resistance.
With this new range of products, Rotecna offers farmer an effective solution for the system of dividers in various phases of production.
PORK EXPORTS TO RUSSIA FALL 89% The Russian embargo is causing havoc in the European pig sector. The 89% drop in European exports to Russia between January and September 2014, when it was the largest purchaser in 2013, has generated a surplus on the markets and a generalised fall in prices. The efforts to cover the 485,000 tonnes of meat that Europe has not been able to export to Russia over these nine months have not been sufficient, although they have served to increase exports to Asian markets. Thus, between January and September 2014, exports to Japan rose by 50%, to the Philippines, by 94% and South Korea by 92%. With a 1% rise in exports, China has become the country that buys most pig meat from the European Union (500,778 tonnes). However, as indicated above, despite the efforts made to sell EU pig meat on other markets, the total volume of exports fell by 7.3% in the first nine months of the year compared with the same period of 2013, with 2.12 million tonnes exported. The European pig sector faces a surplus of supply, which has led to a fall in prices in almost all countries in the EU. Only between weeks 39 and 42 of 2014, the average pig meat price in Europe fell by 10% to eur. 142.72 /100 kg, which was eur. 15 less, according to data from the BPEX.

TECHNOLOGY more competitive, technical and organised sector in all phases of the production process. By areas, 47.5% of total pig production in Colombia is concentrated in the Department of Antioquia, followed by Bogotá D.C. (22.2%) and the Valle del Cauca (15.2%).
Consumption One of the factors that historically most concerns producers in any sector is the domestic consumption of their product, given that an increase in demand implies an increase in profits and margin to continue growing. In the case of pork meat in Colombia, domestic consumption has risen year after year over the last decade, from 2.9 kilos per person in 2002 to 6.7 kilos in 2013, and is forecast to reach 7.3 kilos in 2014 (Graph 1). Among the factors that influence the higher consumption of pork, the annual report of the Asociación Colombiana de Porcicultores indicates the increase in family incomes as the most important: if income increases, the spending of the families rises. On the other hand, the Asociación states that the Farms in Colombia equipped with Rotecna products. Photo: Oscar Arboleda.
THE COLOMBIAN PIG SECTOR GROWS IN PRODUCTION, CONSUMPTION & PRICES In three months, Colombia managed to control an outbreak of PED similar to the one in the USA.
After a good 2013 for the pig sector in Colombia in terms of production, consumption and prices, 2014 began with very good prospects, with the confidence that the volume of production would remain above 3 millions head, an increase in the average consumption per person and year from 6.7 kg to 7.3 kg, as well as maintaining a bullish tendency in the prices for the producers. In fact, there were good overall figures in the early months, but the appearance of the first cases of PED (Porcine Epidemic Diarrhoea) in some farms in Boyacá, Cundinamarca, Huila, Santander and Tolima in March sounded all the alarms and led to fears of suffering the same losses as those registered in the United States, Canada or Mexico. Finally, the sector has been able to recover rapidly and, after the first urgent measures taken, Colombia managed to control the PED outbreak and end it in June, only three months after the suspected cases were detected. In this sense, improving the health status, and eliminating and controlling diseases through biosecurity, are some of the main challenges facing the pig sector in Colombia for the coming years.

These figures correspond to a pork production of 254,000 tonnes, an amount that it is forecast to rise to 310,000 tonnes in 2015, in other words, an increase of over 19% compared with current production. The Colombian pork sector hopes to reach this target as a result of all the projects that have been started up, and move towards an ever
Despite import duties of up to 20% on imported products, the price of imported meat is relatively lower than the domestic product, which benefits imports. In 2013, the price of imported meat was only higher than the domestic product between May and August, when it reached a peak at 10% higher. From August, the price of imported product fell to 10% below that of nationally produced meat, which has meant a new boost for imports in the latter part of the year. The tendency is expected to continue throughout 2014, when pig meat imports could exceed 70,000 tonnes, according to data from the Asociación Colombiana de Porcicultores. Refrigerated meat, offal and bacon are the main products imported into the Colombian market, these coming from the United States (75%), Canada (15%) and Chile (10%).
Prices The good times the pig sector in Colombia is experiencing, with an increase in production and, especially, in consumption, has had its positive effects on the price for the producer. Thus, 2013 will be remembered by Colombian pig breeders for the good prices they received for their animals, with an average increase of 7.5% over the previous year. While the average price for home-grown pork was 4,300 pesos per kilo (US$ 2) in 2012, in 2013 it reached 4,622 pesos (US$ 2.149), maintaining a positive tendency practically throughout the year, and with the highest

prices for the third and fourth quarters compared with the last four years. The positive evolution of the prices continued in the first half of this year, with an increase of 2.4%, reaching 5,118 pesos per kilo (US$ 2.380). This was the second highest in the history of the Ronda de Precios, that has been running since 2001, only lower than the price in December 2008, when it rose to 5,158 pesos per kilo (US$ 2.399). However, the increase in domestic demand for pork has not only provoked an increase in the price that the
However, regarding the annual per-capita consumption registered in 2013 (6.3 kg/person), it must be pointed out that approximately 1.3 kilos were imported, 19% of consumption. This figure has risen alongside the figures for imports, as the consumption of imported product represented 10% of the total in 2010.
The rise in internal demand for pig meat in Colombia has not only benefited local producers, whose production and prices have increased, but has also been
by 0.8% in 2015, to 22.44 million tonnes of pork in the European Union.

Given the good figures for production, consumption and prices, the perspectives for the pork sector in Colombia should follow the same line, meeting the growing domestic demand for pork, as well as offering a product with full health guarantees and the highest quality.

FUTURENEWS
Pig meat consumption set to rise in Europe in 2015.
The production of pig meat in the European Union could rise slightly, by 0.8%, in 2015, according to data in the latest “Short-term outlook for arable crop, meat and dairy markets” report, published by the European Commission.
Production Pig production is still growing in Colombia, and although the rate of growth fell during the first half of this year, the rise has been 1.3%, reaching the figure of 1,464,995 head between January and June. On the other hand, according to data from the Análisis de coyuntura del sector porcicultor de Colombia en 2013 (Analysis of the state of the pig-

accompanied by an increase in imports of pork products and sub-products. According to data from the DANE (Departamento Administrativo Nacional de Estadística), in 2013 a record 56,800 tonnes of pork were imported, a much higher figure than the 36,700 tonnes of the previous year. In 2014, the tendency for imports to increase has continued and in only the first four months of the year, these had risen by 49% over the same period of the previous year, to more than 23,100 tonnes.
After a two-year fall in the supply of pig meat in Europe (2012 and 2013), partly due to the application of the animal welfare norms, a recovery in production figures was expected for 2014. But the appearance of outbreaks of African Swine Fever (ASF) and the closure of the Russian market to
European pig meat have finally led to a 0.5% drop in production to 22.27 million tonnes. However, according to data in the report, that fall was in the first half of the year. Thus, signs of recovery have been appearing in the second half of the year, so a slight recovery of production is expected in the coming year. In this sense, according to the European Commission, a reduction in the costs of animal feed should enable the sector to absorb the fall in pig prices and reach the projected recovery of pig production
Over the year, however, the situation of pork production in Europe has varied among the member states. Thus, in the first seven months of the year, slaughters were down on last year in three of the main producers, with a fall of 2% in Germany, 1% in Denmark and around 5% in Italy. On the other hand, production figures remained stable in France, and rose significantly in Poland (7%) and Holland (3%). Regarding the number of sows, this rose between May and June compared with last year in Germany, Holland, Spain, Denmark and Hungary.
Pork consumption in Europe is forecast to rise in 2015
Pork consumption in the European Union has remained stable in 2014, with low levels similar to those of 2013, of 31 kilos per person and year. However, the forecasts for 2015 are for pork consumption to rise thanks to a greater availability of meat on the EU market and the higher prospects for economic growth. According to the figures for the shortterm from the European Commission based on Eurostat data, pork meat consumption will generally increase within the European Union from the 41.07 million tonnes of meat consumed in 2013 to the 41.88 million tonnes forecast for 2015. If we convert these figures into consumption per head, this will rise from 64.5 kilos per person and year to 65.5 kilos.
