This new reality has brought about changes in the way we work with each other, produce and sell. Industries have reorganised their way of working to guarantee the health and safety of employees and to be able to continue production. National and international fairs have been adjourned, and virtual and telematic meetings have now become the new forums for meeting and exchanging opinions. Granted, it is not the same, but it is a good alternative that allows us to bypass isolation in a globalised world. In business, although we have seen both travel and fairs interrupted and our employees’ work habits have changed, as a primary sector industry as we are, we are still actively serving our clients. Reality has far surpassed fiction and all that remains now to be seen is what will be the “new normal”, which we will have to live with in the coming months, will be. What we can be sure of is that we are all in the same boat and that we will only get out of this if we stick together both as an industry and a society. Finally, the health crisis caused by the coronavirus does not give way to other sectoral concerns, such as the threat of African swine fever. ASF already affects twelve countries of the European Union, many of which have been forced to close export doors. It is a health threat which, if reaches our borders, could have a great and catastrophic economic impact for the sector, which largely depends on exports. For this reason, professionals insist on the importance of extreme biosecurity measures to prevent the entry of the disease. Gener Romeu

HOW HAVE WE DEALT WITH THE CORONAVIRUS? Since the start of the Covid-19 health crisis, Rotecna has had a Monitoring and Action Committee. Besides, antibody tests have been carried out on all workers. forced many companies to make decisions about how to face this crisis and how to protect the health of their workers. Currently, Rotecna has more than 220 workers, and at no time has production stopped during these weeks. This has been possible thanks to the joint effort of all the company’s staff who, day by day, have adapted to the measures that have been implemented both from the company’s management and from the government.

During these weeks of confinement, this committee has met weekly to ensure careful control of the situation, determine what measures to adopt, and check that these measures are followed correctly. Among the steps taken to facilitate distancing, office staff have been offered the option of teleworking, thus encouraging the fine-tuning of work and family life. As for the personnel who work at the company, they have been provided at all times, with masks, gloves, and all the necessary protective equipment, as well as disinfectant gel. An access door and an exit door have been enabled, screens have been installed at reception, and the size of this space has been reduced. The attendance

one of the most treasured in the Iberian Peninsula, with the charm of the Mediterranean Sea all around it. It is not surprising, then, that Greeks and Romans fell surrendered to the appeal of the place and established important cities there.

The name Empúries derives from the Greek Emporion, and it means “market”. The Hellenes did not choose the name by chance, and it is that this colony founded in 575 B.C. by merchants from the city Focea (present-day Turkey), had a significant commercial potential that the Greeks knew how to exploit. The area has been occupied since the Bronze Age by an indigenous population that traded with the Phoenicians. With the arrival of the Greeks, Emporion became one of the leading trading points of the western Mediterranean, where the western limit of the Greek world was

one of the main areas responsible for the expansion and diffusion of the Hellenic culture in the peninsula. The first settlement, later called Palaiápolis (old city), was built on a small island where Sant Martí d’Empúries is located today. From the 5th century B.C. Another settlement was developed: the Neápolis (new city), the remains of which can be visited today at the archaeological site.

Emporiae, the Roman city A few centuries later, the Romans arrived. Emporion was a Roman ally during the Second Punic War, in the early 3rd century B.C. It was then that the first Roman military post arrived at Emporion. Later, the city served as the Romans’ gateway to the Iberian Peninsula, and in the time of Julius Caesar, 1st century B.C., the Greek and Roman cities were unified under the name of Emporieae. The city was Romanised,

After two months enforcing these measures, we saw that they have been useful. This has been confirmed by the results of the antibody tests that have been carried out on all Rotecna personnel, and which must allow the Monitoring and Action Committee to know the state of the company concerning COVID-19. Overcoming this crisis and achieving the “new normal” is everyone’s responsibility. Therefore, we need to act with shrewdness and responsibility. Together we will make it happen!

ROTECNA RENEWS

ITS INNOVATIVE SME CERTIFICATE

R+D+I Department. Photo: Rotecna. Rotecna has recently renewed the Innovative SME certificate granted by the General Directorate for Innovation and Competitiveness of the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness. The disctintive, valid until January 2024, recognizes

the innovative nature of the company, with almost 30 years of experience in manufacturing equipment for pig farms, and confirms the quality of our products. This stamp, which represents a reward for the work done, was created by the Spanish

Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness under the OrderECC / 1087/2015, of June 5, with the aim of promoting R&D in our country and promoting projects that promote competitiveness and future development of companies.

GREEK AND ROMAN CITIES Latin and Roman laws were imposed, and the Roman empire continued to prosper there.

The decline of Emporiae Later on, other Roman cities on the peninsula robbed Emporiae of its prominence. At the end of the 3rd century, the Neápolis was abandoned, being used only as a cemetery. The population was concentrated in the Palaiàpolis, later transformed into Sant Martí d’Empúries. Sant Martí recovered part of its splendour by becoming an episcopal hub and later, the capital of the county of Empúries until the court moved to Catselló d’Empúries. San Martí was then reduced to a small town of fishermen who founded L’Escala in the 16th century.

Archaeological site Excavations of the archaeological complex began in 1908 and have continued nearly without interruption until today. Currently, only 25% of

the Empúries archaeological site has been excavated. Over the years, up to 150 perfectly preserved mosaics have been found in the Empúries archaeological complex (between the Greek and Roman cities), making the site one of the most noteworthy places in the entire Iberian Peninsula due to the variety in typologies, techniques and designs of its mosaics. Two temples found in the Greek city are of exceptional interest: the Serapieion and the Asklepiéion. The first dedicated to Isis and Zeus Serapis, both of Egyptian origin, and the second devoted to Asklepiós (god of medicine). This religious centre was significant because it gave shelter to sailors fleeing from the dangers of the rugged coast and the Tramuntana that hits Cap de Creus. In the Asklepiéion temple, you can see a copy of the statue, found in the excavations in 1909 on the upper terrace of the sanctuary dedicated to this god. Its origin is the most famous

Outside the enclosure, on the beach next to the path that leads to Sant Martí d’Empúries, are the remains of the Hellenistic pier, built by the Greeks shortly after the arrival of the Romans. It was in this ancient Greek port where the Olympic torch for the Barcelona Olympics landed in 1992.

TR7D THE LARGE CAPACITY WEANING DRY FEEDER WITH HANDY REGULATION

We observe a trend to increase the size of weaning pens as the average size of farms increases. Since, if the health status is good and the animals require little individual attention, the large groups of piglets, with a lower hierarchy, offer advantages in terms of the adaptation of the animals, reduction of fights, problems of tail biting, the clear definition of feeding, resting and dunging zones, and the cost reduction of separators and canopies to create microclimates. At the same time, many farmers are using dry feeding of newly weaned piglets for its simplicity and ease of handling, in a phase in which the animal’s daily consumption is still moderate. To respond to this need, we launch our new TR7D feeder for weaners in large groups, a double-sided feeder with seven feeding spaces on each side and easily adjustable. With a maximum capacity of 330 liters, it allows feeding from 70 to 84 animals with a single daily filling.

INDEPEMNDENT REGULATION OF EACH SIDE REGULATION WITH JUST ONE HAND The TR7D has an easily adjustable mechanism that allows to adjust the feed flow with one hand and make a quick and precise transition from point to point (10 positions). This easy regulation guarantees a precise adjustment of the feed flow and reduces waste. Finally, the “sandwich” system facilitates the adjustment of the hopper even full, since the slide-gate is protected by a sheet, which allows it to slide smoothly, without resistance of the feed.

FEATURES: • It allows feeding from 70 to 84 animals. • Maximum capacity of 330 liters. • Compact and resistant.

4

ADVANTAGES : • Maximizes feed consumption and minimizes waste. • It is only necessary to fill it once a day.

• Rounded pan without corners where feed can accumulate.

• The height of the pan allows the piglets easy access to the feed, facilitating their rapid adaptation.

• Regulation with one hand and independent on each side.

• The feed slides easily through the hopper without bridging.

• Protected regulation gate.

• Facilitates manual filling of starter feed.

• Design that facilitates the feed flow.

• Easy handling of the hopper even full.

FERNANDO BORQUE:

“THE TRANSPARENT NI-2 MAKES IT EASY TO SEE THE PIGLETS AND MAKE SURE THAT NONE ARE LEFT BEHIND” The farm located in Tauste, Zaragoza, has 1,550 sows and works with a free maternity system in the new sites installed in 2019. Convinced his future would be linked to livestock, because it was what he had seen all his life at home and what he was passionate about, 27 years ago Fernando Borque began working with his father in the family business --pig farming-- and investing in his future. Thus, the farm which started its activity with 100 sows in 1984, grew to 300 breeders. After successive growths, in 2019 Fernando decided to enlarge the facilities and go from 900 sows to 1,550. The leading feature of this expansion has been its commitment to working with free maternity wards. Why did you decide to devote yourself to pig production? It is a family business. My father started 35 years ago, which is why I have always seen him at home. I like animals, so from the beginning, I was very clear about what I wanted to do. How has the farm evolved? My father started with 100 sows, then I joined 27 years ago, and we raised the farm’s count from 100 to 300 sows, we then went to 700, after that to 900 and, in this last expansion, we have reached 1,550 sows. We have always worked with maternity and weaning, where we now have 6,000 spaces. How is the farm distributed? We have two gestation buildings, in which almost 70-80% of the time, use the inseminate and release method with open access boxes. Then we have the maternity hall with 360 places, two weaning houses with 6,000 places, quarantine and a deviant room. How many people work on the farm? We are six employees: 2-3 people in gestation, 2 in maternity, 1 in weaning and myself, working as support in the different stages. We do weekly shifts where half a team works from Monday to Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and the other from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and weekends. I am also there in the afternoons to see how the day has gone and prepare for the next. This farm works with free maternity wards. Why did you go for this type of accommodation system? I think it is the future of the sector and that sooner or later it will prevail. At the last FIGAN fair in

6

Photo of the team of employees working on the farm. Photo: Rotecna. Zaragoza, we saw that at the stands of the leading farm material companies, what stood out most was this type of maternity accommodation and we think that this was another sign of where we are heading. Therefore, in the last expansion we went for incorporating this model. We now have 160 free farrowing pens (5 rooms with 32 spaces) and 200 conventional ones (10 rooms with 16 spaces and five rooms with eight spaces). What are the characteristics of the free places with which you work? They are squares totalling 6.25 square meters, precisely measuring 2.60 meters deep by 2.40 meters wide. The system that we work with allows us to have the sows caged, as in a conventional farrowing pen the first 4-5 days after farrowing and, on the fifth or sixth day, we release them and work without problems until 28 days of lactation, when we do the weaning. What benefits would you highlight compared to the conventional pen? It is early to draw conclusions about the number of casualties, but what we have noticed in these first days is that it seems that the crushing is much less frequent than in the conventional farrowing pens (which are 1.80m x 2.60m). On the other hand regarding work, it is much more comfortable for the employee, due to the space available both when the sow is locked up and when working with the free farrowing pen. Employees are delighted with the new accommodation model. Besides, it is also noted that the animal is much better. What are the main differences between managing a standard delivery and free delivery? There are really few, but the handling is better and more comfortable for employees since we have

more space when moving around and assisting the sow. For the rest, a few changes: we manage the deliveries as in the conventional farrowing pens, where we also do nest management to which the piglets adapt quickly. Hence we succeed in reducing losses and guarantee a comfort zone. At night, in both systems, we leave a support spotlight on, but during the day, there is no light, and the piglet goes to the nest without any problems. We indeed lay more paper than in a conventional pen, but it is because the hold is also larger. In conclusion, beyond the increased handling ease for employees, in all deliveries we work with the same elements: paper, nest, heating plate and a spotlight at night. Do you think that the future of the sector depends on this model of maternity spaces? Without a doubt. Primarily due to consumer demand, which increasingly requires higher animal welfare. Sooner or later, the change will be mandatory. As for the farm equipment, a large part of the products installed are from Rotecna. Why was their use decided on? Mainly, the products’ excellent value for money. In my opinion, compared to other brands, it is the one that offers better equipment. On the other hand, they are products that are easy to install, handle and guarantee excellent durability. Some are products we installed more than 15 years ago, and there has been no need to renew them. What are the main Rotecna products that you have installed? Practically everything we have is from Rotecna: dispensers, maternity and weaning racks, nests, the Swing R3 hopper, the Feeding Ball, plastic panels, the feed distribution system...

GLOBALPIG allow visits to the farm on Monday mornings, as long as you have not been to any other farm during the weekend; it is compulsory to shower and change clothes before entering the farm and we have double fencing. Besides, as soon as we finish the projects, we will work colour-coded (the employees will be dressed in different colours) to differentiate the various areas/warehouses of the farm (gestation, maternity, quarantine, weaning and deviating). In areas of high pig density such as this, one must be very careful.

Maternity room with transparent Ni-2. Photo: Rotecna. In maternity, you work with transparent Ni-2s. What advantages do they provide compared to other models on the market? They guarantee the piglets’ comfort which is something essential. The fact that they are transparent makes it easy to see the animals and make sure that no one is left behind. I think that it is very successful to work with nests in maternity.

to collect the smallest piglets from the litter and at night. Along with the nest, we work with hot plates, which we have a regulator for that we control from a mobile phone. We start with 37-38 degrees postpartum and gradually lower the temperature, as the age of the piglet increases. The temperature in the nest is perfect if we see that the animals rest comfortably under the cover.

How do you use Ni-2 in maternity? We use them throughout lactation, from the birth of the piglet until 28 days afterwards, when weaned. The first week we work with the nest in the lowest area and then, as the animals grow, we raise it to the highest. The spotlight is used for farrowing

Given the existing health threats, such as the PPA, what biosecurity measures do you adopt on the farm? We try to be as rigorous as possible in the application of biosecurity measures since this area is very populated with pigs. First of all, we only

THE AUSTRALIAN PIG SECTOR BECOMES MORE TECHNICAL In recent years, pork sales have grown by 8% and the total is expected to continue increasing. Over the past 30 years, many small Australian producers have not had the financial means to concentrate or grow their businesses. As the sector has evolved towards more intensive production methods, infrastructure costs have risen, posing a real challenge for smaller producers, who at the same time, have had to cope with increased pork meat imports. Thus, the largest producers and different companies have been absorbing the smallest, and a much more specialised and technical sector has been fashioned than it was years ago. All this has led to Australia having a higher production than it had five decades ago. During 2018, the Australian pig sector registered 690 million euros profit. Most of the farms and meat companies are found in the states of Victoria, Queensland and New South Wales, although growth in the sector has been most substantial in the past five years in Western Australia and South Australia.

Consumption Pork is the third best-selling meat in Australia, behind chicken and beef. With more than 25 million inhabitants, the Australian market is small. Meat consumption has increased over the last five years

in Australia, and pork is the class that has grown the most, with an increase in sales of 8% between 2017 and 2018. According to figures from 2019, Australian eats an average of 26.5 kilograms of pork per year. Forecasts show that this amount will increase over the next five years. This growth in the consumption and demand for pork has occurred, in part, thanks to the communication campaigns launched by the Australian Pork Limited, which have familiarised the population about the health benefits that pork has. Regarding meat prices, it has been decreasing in recent years until reaching the historical minimum of the last decade, due to a production excess estimated at 6% of the total of Australian pigs.

Foreign market for pork The Australian industry produces 360,000 tonnes of pork per year, but Australian consumers consume around 550,000 tonnes. Therefore, the country is forced to import from Europe (mainly from Denmark and the Netherlands), the United States and Canada. In 2017, pork imports reached a value of more than € 390 million and accounted for 0.21% of total Australian imports. It is worth mentioning that in Australia imports are minimal due to the country’s strict phytosanitary measures, and it is only allowed to introduce pork from a reduced number of countries. The main

In this sense, does working with plastic panels like Rotecna’s have advantages in reducing the propagation of diseases? Yes, mainly for cleaning: it is easier and more efficient to clean a plastic panel than a concrete or iron partition. Until now, we have been working with cement, and we have confirmed that when it comes to cleaning, a plastic panel is much cleaner than a concrete one. Besides, the work is performed in less time, so labour costs are reduced and there are significant water savings. Additionally, in the old part, when a concrete partition breaks, we replace it with plastic panels. What future challenges will you be facing? Finish commissioning the farm expansion. It has been a significant investment, and we have to go little by little to pay it off. In the future, we would like to work with all the farrowing pens and close the cycle, do the entire production pyramid: grandmother sows, hybrids, gestation, maternity, transition and bait.

PIGPRODUCTIONIN...

Weaning with products Rotecna installed. Photo: Rotecna barrier to pork entering the Australian market lies in the obligation to respect the set of rigorous regulations that regulate the entrance of this product in the country. As for exports, these are very limited. In 2017 they accounted for just 0.04% of the total value of Australian exports, despite having increased over the past five years. During that year, Australia exported pork worth more than 76 million euros, almost 10% more than the previous year.

Measures before proximity of the PPA

After confirming that there had been outbreaks of African swine fever (ASF) in East Timor last September, the Australian government expressed its concern, since the country is very close to Australia (it is only 650 km from the Australian city company from Darwin).Given this situation, the Australian Ministry of Agriculture has increased biosafetyrelated surveillance, especially at international airports and, specifically, on flights from countries affected by ASF.
