ROTECNANEWS ROTECNA INVESTS IN VIRTUAL REALITY Withvirtualreallity, wecanvisualise the product developed from a very inital stage.
Innovation is Rotecna’s most characteristic feature and the company constantly works in this direction, going for ways that keep us as leaders in our sector. For this reason, Rotecna has recently invested in virtual reality, an innovative technological tool that the R + D + I department has incorporated into the design and creation of new products. Virtual reality allows companies’ productivity to increase through innovation, with tailored solutions to their needs. Aware of the advantages of this technology, Rotecna has chosen to implement it to further optimize work processes established before prototyping new products. So far, Rotecna’s technicians made these prototypes with a 3D printer, a fact that helped to see how the final product would work on the farm. However, adding virtual reality now allows us to review and validate designs before printing, and therefore include improvements to 3D prototypes. Hence, there is one for virtual tests where we can test and inspect products with their real measurements. There is also the option of doing a product functionality study, simulating the assembly site, that is, 4
The company has invested in virtual reality technology to create new produ
a commercial farm, since this tool allows technicians to render the models in three dimensions and integrate them into virtual reality scenarios, offering a realistic 360° perspective on what the final result of each piece and its possible uses will be. In this sense, the visualization of the product incorporated into its space allows checking how it would work, verifying in a more agile way each model’s correct functioning, detecting possible improvements in design and making decisions regarding the final manufacture and assembly of the product. In short, with virtual reality, we can visualise the product developed from a very initial stage in the process, which allows optimization of processes and adaptations and improvements

on the y, without waiting to have the final product manufactured to try it. All these improvements help reduce the costs of creating a product since, in addition to design costs, other steps in the chain are optimized until manufacturing is reached. It also implies an improvement in the efficiency of end customer service, shortening new product development timeframes. Thus, Rotecna’s commitment to invest in the latest technologies on the market contributes to achieving the brand’s main objective: to offer the best solutions to livestock farmers and guarantee customer satisfaction with the final product through innovation and technology.
SOMETHINGABOUT THE ESTANY D’IVARS AND VILA-SANA
The Estany d’ Ivars and Vila-Sana were recovered from 2005 after the old pond was dried.
General view of the pond.
Water, flora and fauna create a surprising pond in the middle of the Ilerdense region of Pla d’Urgell. It is the Estany d’Ivars and Vila-Sana, a freshwater lagoon, with a water surface of 126 hectares and an average depth that does not reach two meters. This pond is the largest inland lake in Catalonia in terms of dimensions, and one of the most important wetlands in the region. Besides, it welcomes an important biological diversity, being an important point for the conservation of many species. In this sense, the swamp’s vegetation, the riverside, the dry land and the surrounding crops have benefited the natural colonization of fauna with species such as the otter, the lagoon eaglet, the moustachioed or the European terrapin, among many others.
History The pond’s creation dates back thousands of years and is associated with the terrain’s geological conditions: the presence and outcrop of water in a waterproof bottom 6
caused the little water that reached the place to accumulate without the possibility of draining anywhere. The pond never accumulated much water and in summer it dried up until in 1861, the construction of the ‘Canal d’Urgell’ and the ensuing input of waters from the Segre river turned the pond into a receiving water container for the irrigation fields of the region. This fact led to an increase in the size of this small lake, which in turn became a centre of social, economic and cultural life for the peoples around it. Among the activities carried out in this space were hunting and fishing especially eel. Contrary to popular will, the pond dried up and disappeared in 1951 by the Sanitation Project, which wanted to obtain more workable land.
Pond recovery Over 40 years, the pond remained alive in popular memory, which is why in the late 1990s
the Ivars City Council raised the possibility of refilling it. The constitution, in 2002, of the Consortium of l’Estany d’Ivars and Vila-Sana, allowed all the necessary work to be carried out for the recovery of this space. The works ended in 2005, and the filling of the pond was completed in 2009. Since the maximum water level was reached, the pond and its surroundings show a series of ecological transformations with an increase in flora and fauna and the recovery of a privileged landscape.
Up to 250 species of birds coexist in the place.
Flora and fauna Within the protected area of Estany d’Ivars and Vila-Sana, more than 400 plant species have been identified. Among the varied vegetation of the place, the reed stands out, an aquatic plant that lives on flooded soils or the edges of rivers and ponds. This species can be found throughout the pond’s perimeter, especially on the east side, in the form of a purification reed bed. Precisely on that side, you can also see semi-wild horses that graze favouring this environment’s biodiversity. Around the place is the riverside forest with poplars, alder, elms, willows and tamarinds. As for wildlife, up to 250 species of birds coexist in the place, 31 mammal, 6 reptile, 5 amphibian, 7 fish, and 21 odonate species. As the most important mammal species, the otter stands out, which has colonized the lagoon, probably going up the Corb river from the Segre river. On the brims and crops, one can see species such as the common fox, the boar, the badger, the rabbit or small mammals such as mice, rats and shrews. If we talk about the reptiles, we can find different species of aquatic turtle (two of them native – Mediterranean pond turtle
and European pond turtle - and some other American species), and some water snake that hides from the herons. On the other hand, amphibians, frogs and toads such as the green frog and the common midwife toad, croak at all points near the lagoon, sheltered from possible predators, such as fish and birds. Regarding fish, allochthonous and invasive populations such as carp and walleye dominate, and coexistence with their own or potential species, such as common barbel and rutile, is difficult. On the other hand, the European eel, which was very abundant in the old pond, requires appropriate steps be taken so that they can overcome the reservoir dams in the Ebro river. Finally, one of the pond’s main attractions is bird watching. With the help of binoculars and a bird guide, you can have a good time observing the species that inhabit the area, such as storks, royal herons, plovers or puffins, ducks, or cormorants, among others. It should be kept in mind that, during the year, the species that can be observed change depending on whether they are wintering, summer or reproductive species, passing or sedentary. 7

FAST DOOR KIT OPENING AND CLOSING SYSTEM
Rotecna redesigns its successful Fast Door Kit door closing system by implementing a polyamide cover for the stainless-steel mechanism, reducing friction, and smoothing and accelerating the action of the opening and closing system. The Fast Door Kit is an innovative closing system for doors in fattening pens and PP panel gestation, which allows opening on both sides, both inside and outside the pen, to the right and left of the door, simply and fast, using just one hand. Rotecna’s patented closing system offers a solution to the problems detected by farmers in other existing systems on the market. In addition to its ease and comfort of use, the Fast Door Kit has a security mechanism that guarantees a perfect closing of the door and prevents its accidental opening due to the animals’ jolts. 8
ADVANTAGES: • • • • • •
Ease and speed of assembly and use. Quick and secure closing with one hand. A security mechanism that guarantees the perfect closing of the door. Corrosion-resistant. High durability. Very versatile.
CHARACTERISTICS: • Made with very strong and durable corrosion-resistant materials. • Convex housing system with a conical hook to enable automatic closing. • Spring closure handle. • Cornerless design that prevents water and dirt accumulation which guarantees optimum hygiene and prevents the appearance of bacteriological and contamination problems. • Option to supply panels with milling and holes for already-made systems.
CORRALS WITH PP PANELS; THE MOST HYGIENIC SOLUTION The Fast Door Kit closing system is designed for installation in pens built with PP panels, an increasingly widespread material in fattening and gestation due to its high resistance and easy cleaning which guarantees optimum pen hygiene and reduces health problems.
PP panel separations are currently the best alternative for a sector concerned with animal welfare and health. The extreme weight of the concrete panels, as well as the accumulation of dirt and the difficulty to clean its walls, or the oxidation problems that the slurry causes in metal separations, make PP panels a more attractive and efficient option. The weight of the PP panels, less than that of other structures, simplifies their transport, assembly and handling. Besides, the possibility of manufacturing them as Rotecna offers, allows the farmer to design pens according to the dimensions of his facilities. Furthermore, hygiene is another decisive factor to take into account in the design of accommodation systems. In this sense, going with materials that are easy and quick to clean, such as PP panels with smooth surfaces and without pores, guarantees optimal hygiene and represents significant savings in time and water (around 30-40%), and which also reduces slurry production. 9
GLOBALPIG JORDI CORSA: “WITH EVOFEED WE GREATLY REDUCE DIARRHOEA PROBLEMS IN PIGLETS” When and why did you decide to commit yourself to pork farming? I decide to become a farmer when I am very young. It is a family business. At home we have always devoted ourselves to agriculture and livestock, so, over time, I and my brother have continued the tradition and we are the ones who now manage the farms and the fields.
Jordi Corsa, in one of the farm’s weaning rooms. Photo: Rotecna.
This farm located in Tartareu (Lleida) has 7. 200 weaning seats and works with the Evofeed multiphase power control system. Coming from a family committed to agriculture and livestock, Jordi Corsa decided from a very young age to continue with the family tradition and take charge of the business together with his brother. Over the years and facing the good figures of other farms owned by Cal Romano, the brothers went for diversifying their business in the pork sector and building a weaning farm, which they launched last October. Furthermore, their concern for modern and technical facilities made them invest in electronic power with Rotecna’s Evofeed multiphase power control system. In this ‘Rotecna World’, Jordi explains how weaning is handled with this program. 10
What is the origin of this weaning farm? This is a new farm for us. Until now we only had pig fattening, but we thought about expanding and investing in weaning. It was a way to diversify business within the pork sector. Besides, after deciding to make the investment we also went for having a more modernised farm. How is the installation distributed? We have three independent rooms. In each room, there are between 2.000 and 2.400 animals, distributed in 24 large pens. Then, we also have 6 small pens that we use as sickbays. In all these rooms, we work with the “all inside - everything outside” system to guarantee maximum health. On the other end, we have a dressing area and an office. Who works on the farm? One of the two brothers works on the farm, since we divided the tasks between this farm and the fattening one, and we also have a person who takes care of daily work. When you chose to install the Evofeed multiphase power control system on the farm, what needs did you intend to cover?
“With the Evofeed we achieve perfect blends with the exact amount of kilos of feed that we set”. We decided to install the Evofeed system because it allows us to control the feed supply very efficiently and we can make all the premixes and mixtures that we want with the feeding curves that our Cincaporc technicians (integrator which we work with) decide, etc. Also, it is a very comfortable system to manipulate and control. Why did you go for Rotecna’s system? We saw that it was impossible to supply a perfect mix of feed and the day we wanted with other systems on the market; instead, with the Evofeed we achieve perfect blends with the exact amount of kilos of feed that we set and the days that we program. We have also been working with Rotecna and its products for many years, and our trust in the company is total. How do you work with this power control system? We have three outer silos that store three different types of feed with a machine for each silo, which is the one that supplies the food to the farm. On the other hand, within each room, we have a separate machine that is the one that serves the predetermined mixture to the pens. We control the entire feeding system using a digital screen where we can see the feed that we manage per room with the mixtures. From here on, what we do every day with Evofeed is control it. Every morning, upon arrival, we check the feed weight and the mixtures that have been supplied on screen, to verify that 11

everything has worked correctly, and we quickly check the pens to see the state of the animals. The truth is that Evofeed is designed so that you do not have to do anything else in the weaning rooms. How transitions are scheduled in the system? The mixtures we have are determined by the company’s technicians we work with. Specifically, a type of feed is supplied the first 10 days of the piglets’ entry, then the mixtures are made, after 20 days it is changed to the second feed, the mixture is carried out progressively again until the last feed is delivered. The entire process is always supervised by the integrator. After a few months of use, what are the main advantages Evofeed offers you? Precise control in feed supply and blends. Even when supplies are down to half, we can make a variation in the mixtures that we want to distribute. Also, we have verified that with Evofeed we greatly reduce diarrhoea problems in the piglets, since performing the mixtures 12
“Evofeed is a comfortable, very reliable system and all the premixes of feed we make are easy to control and understand”. well is very important, because it means avoiding digestive problems in the animals with them feed transitions. In this way, we have less diarrhoea and less significant weight drops in animals, which is transformed into better kilo/piglet conversions and better farm health overall. At the work organization and management level, what are the advantages? Being an automated system, in which nobody has to supervise the feed or quantities mixtures and premixes, we have significant cost savings in personnel and time. Keep in mind that with traditional management systems, feed control is very poor, since it is visual and approximate. With Evofeed, feed is controlled by the gram and is extremely accurate. It is easy to use? It is a very easy to use system, any operator can manage the computer program. In short, Evofeed is a comfortable, very reliable system and all the premixes of feed we make are easy
to control and understand for everyone (for the owner, the operator and any technician who comes). What other Rotecna products have you installed? Virtually everything we have installed on the farm is from Rotecna; slats, hoppers (TR4 and Swing R3), old dishes, PVC fences, feed distribution system What do you value about Rotecna? We have had a very good relationship with Rotecna for many years. They supply us with practically all the material for the farms. Until now we have always worked with them with baits and now also this weaning. A good
Pen with TR4 hopper, slats and dishes installed. Photo: Rotecna.
thing about Rotecna is its commitment to innovation, that is why we are testing the new products it launches as they always represent an improvement. What biosecurity measures do they adopt to reduce the risk of disease transmission? Mainly a zero-entry policy. No one is allowed to enter the farm except the integrator’s technicians and the workers themselves. We also have a perimeter fence that cannot be trespassed, not even for loading or unloading. What future challenges arise? As in any weaning farm, our main challenge is to improve conversions and the health conditions to avoid health problems.

FUTURENEWS
PRECISION TECHNOLOGY APPLIED ON PORK FARMS
The Clear Farm project will include the creation of a platform that will allow us to know the state of the animals on the farms. Pol Llonch, Researcher at the UAB specialized in animal welfare.
Analyzing the pigs’ behaviour on farms, the environmental conditions of the facilities, the management... all this provides us with information on the welfare of animals. This idea arises from the European project Clear Farm, intending to create a platform that offers the farmer a snapshot of the state of the animals on the farm and allows him to act in advance to improve and correct possible welfare or health problems. In turn, the inclusion of this information in the labelling will allow the end consumer to know the state of the animals throughout their lives. In this ‘Rotecna World,’ we talk to Pol Llonch, UAB researcher, who is part of the Clear Farm project. 14
How did the Clear Farm project start? The project arises from a group of three institutions: the Autonomous University of Barcelona, the University of Murcia, and the Wageningen University of the Netherlands. From our knowledge of the needs of the sector, we thought of a project that would allow us to use PLF technologies (Precision Livestock Farming) to obtain information on animal welfare. What is the main objective of the project? Design a platform that, through sensor information, offers us an image of the state of the animals on the
farm, intending to inform consumers about their wellbeing. Specifically, through a labelling system, you could know what degree of welfare animals have had (in this case, pigs and cows) throughout their lives. Besides, this platform would also allow farmers to be informed about the state of the animals from a more global perspective, which would not only include welfare, but also the facilities’ productive parameters, etc. Finally, all of this will also allow us to know livestock impact on the environment, that is, that the information we obtain through sensors tells us what the contamination potential of animal production is.
Example of a farm with a high level of animal welfare with Rotecna equipment. Photo: Rotecna.
What are the development stages of the Clear Farm project? It is a four-year project that we started in October 2019 and is divided into four operational phases. The first phase, which we are finishing, aims to know consumers’ opinion and all the parties involved in the production (livestock, carriers, slaughterhouses, supermarkets...) about what they expect from technology like the one we are proposing if they believe that It could be useful, what advantages or disadvantages they see... Also, we review the existing technologies in the market that could be useful for this. The second and third phases will go in parallel and will mean that we move to farms to test the technology that has been identified as potentially useful in phase 1. Phase 2 is the one we will develop on pork farms and phase 3 corresponds to milk cow farms. In these phases, we will test the technology, we will see what information we obtain, how it is provided and what are the possibilities of integrating it into our platform as its finishing objective. Finally, phase 4 will
be the design of the platform and its different functions that, through artificial intelligence processes, will collect the information from the sensors, process it and send the data related to animal welfare to the consumer. At the same time, that will offer farmers the results on the state of their animals. At the same time, the more aesthetic aspect of the platform and an understandable and adequate way of getting information to the final consumer must be developed. Where are these sensors to be located for pork farms? We are working with three levels of data. The first would be those offered by the animal, that is, a sensor that allows us to record individual information about the pig. We are talking, for example, about a thermometer that the animal can ingest and provide us with data on its internal temperature, or a chip that we will put in its ear and provide us with data on how many times the animal goes to the feeder, the time it spends in it, how it moves... At 15
FUTURENEWS the second level, we would have environment sensors: temperature, gas, sounds... Finally, on the third level, we would have data that is automatically collected on a farm such as veterinary treatments. Since we know that all medications administered to animals must be controlled by an electronic prescription, we can also incorporate this information into the platform’s database. What do you hope to extract from the different data collected? Our idea is to use a scheme that is already applied in the welfare evaluation protocols, and that divides the state of the animals into four areas: food, comfort, health and natural behaviour. We hope that the sensors provide us with information on each of these four areas so that we can explain to the consumer if the animal has been well fed, if it has enjoyed a good level of comfort, or if its had good health. Where do you plan to carry out the tests?
16
Piglet farm .Photo: Rotecna.
We will carry them out on commercial farms. El Pozo group is one of the partners of the project, so we will do the tests on farms in Cefusa, a livestock company in El Pozo located in Murcia.
“Apply corrective measures to any problem in advance and quickly, will reduce costs. What will the Clear Farm project end up contributing to breeders? The objective is to offer farmers tools to improve their production. We will use blockchain technology which is already in use in other sectors, so that producers have control of all the production phases, from the moment the animal is born to their sacrificing and, if at any time we detect a problem, the producer has immediate access to that information and can apply the necessary measures. Therefore, the
producer (considering as such all the agents in the chain) should undoubtedly be one of the main beneficiaries of this technology. In terms of production, what advantages would this platform have for the farmer? At the animal welfare and health level, apply corrective measures to any problem in advance and quickly, which will reduce costs. For example, studies have been carried out that show that animals, before becoming ill, change their feeding pattern and decrease the amount of food they eat. If we can detect this before clinical signs appear, the producer can now act and apply the necessary treatment without waiting for casualties or more serious problems to occur. In an intensive production sector such as pigs, it is feasible to invest in this farm model? We do not know the costs yet, since it has not yet been decided which technology we will end up using. What we do know, from models of
other species such as milk cows, is that this technology has a high cost, but it pays for itself if it provides the necessary information to improve the production process. In other words, the reduction in losses associated with the unawareness of the animals’ state would compensate for the investment made.
“The consumer will be better informed and will be able to decide to buy based on the data offered”. And, from the consumer’s point of view, what are the main advantages? To have more information: the consumer will be better informed and will be able to decide to buy based on the data offered. The hypothesis is that, if the consumer is concerned about animal welfare and is well informed about the state of the animals where the meat they buy comes from, they will end up tending towards products whose welfare standards are higher, which is a higher quality standard. When do you expect the platform to be available?? The project lasts for four years. We are now about to finish the first phase and in a few weeks we will start the second and third phases, which last 18-24 months. The estimate is that these phases overlap for some time with the last one, devoted to the design of the tool, so we hope to have the first preliminary results in about two years or two and a half years. Then, we will only have the process of refinement and validation of the platform left, which must be completed by September 2023. Find more information at: www.clearfarm.eu 17
PIGPRODUCTIONIN THE HIGH CONSUMPTION OF PORK IN MEXICO OFFERS AN EXCELLENT MARKET NICHE TO LARGE EXPORTERS in national production, and are experiencing the highest growth rates: 35.5% and 32.1% respectively.

The Mexican pork sector is characterized by highly concentrated competition, with few companies, although large, that group different business units and usually combine the entire production system, from breeding to meat distribution and its derivatives. Large farms, which are the ones that can import animals from abroad, support almost half of the local production. The pork sector represents 21.71% of the Mexican meat industry, but it is not enough to cover national demand and forces the industry to resort to imports given the high consumption of this food.
Production Swine production in Mexico (around 16.86 heads, according to the Mexican 18
Meat Council) is very significant, although it is insufficient for its population, given the high consumption of this meat in the country. These figures have contributed to the increase in pork production, which in 2017 was the one with the highest growth, both in tons produced (4.8%) and in value (9.3%, which represented a total of 3,242 million dollars. Although pork farming is performed throughout the country, there are three areas where almost 50% of the total national pork production is located: Jalisco, with 301.15 kt (kilotons), Sonora (261.76 kt) and Puebla (165.56 kt. The latter and the Yucatan area are leading the boom
Regarding farms, up to three types of farms can be differentiated in Mexico. Firstly, there are farms with small-scale or rural systems, that is, farms with less than 50 breeders and less than 200 heads, without access to technology and adequate sanitary conditions. This type of farms represents 22.06% of the country’s pork production. Secondly, there are farms with semi-technified systems, with limited financial resources and that cannot develop intensive and technological systems, so their biosecurity levels are variable. These currently represent 28.11% of national production. Finally, there are farms with fully technified systems, in which technological advances are used in management, nutrition and health aspects, such as strict control of animals and personnel. These farms usually belong to large corporations and house 49.82% of the national inventory of pork heads and 75% of production.

Consumption Pork has managed to become one of the most consumed foods among the Mexican population in recent years. It is the most consumed meat, after chicken, and represents 26.31% of the total national meat consumption. These figures have made Mexico the eighth country in terms of pork consumption worldwide, with 12 kilos per capita in 2017, which translates into some 2.1 million tons of meat.
it before distributing it to the end consumer. In addition to all meat imports, the country is also importing live pigs at higher rates. Genetic improvement programs are increasingly important to the pork industry as major producers are looking for ways to develop better genetic lines for pigs, such as Duroc, in response to production challenges aimed at improving productivity, meat quality and pig growth and temperament.
Meat market
Future
Different deficiencies in local production and its high consumption have caused pork imports to experience a great boom in the last five years, reaching 1,405 million dollars in 2017.
The growth of Mexican GDP, the modern distribution channels development and the possible fares elimination make Mexico an attractive country for Spanish pork products.
Mexico has a long history as an importing country and is the sixth country that purchases the most pork from abroad. Thanks to imports, the Mexican pork market can cover a large part of the needs of the population.
On the other hand, factors such as the per capita income increase and the increase in the cost of beef are expected to continue favouring the growth of pork imports, even at a faster rate than that of local production growth.
Pork imports are specially destined for the food industry, where meat processors transform
