LETTER FROM THE EDITOR After three years of fighting against the ASF, everything suggests that the Chinese pork sector is beginning to show its first recovery symptoms. The Dalian stock exchange allowed the first live animal contracts last January, and, little by little, the Chinese pig herd is growing. Despite the doubts that this may generate for our exporters, the increase in consumption that will accompany the reduction in prices due to this recovery will maintain a good pace for Chinese imports in the short and long term. Possibly, this scenario is of great importance to define some of the challenges that Spanish pork industry will have to face during 2021. Some of them will be kept alert to prevent the entry of the ASF into our borders and implement all biosecurity measures to prevent it and diversify exports taking into account future potential markets. On the other hand, we must not forget the situation we are experiencing with the COVID-19 pandemic, and we must prevent any infectivity within the production chain. Regarding the business, during this year, we will continue working as we have done so far, alongside farmers, offering solutions and enhancements to their day to day on the farm. In this sense, in this Rotecna World, we present Rotecmix, an automatic feeding hopper for piglets that increases animals’ daily weight gain and reduces mortality.

ROTECNANEWS ROTECNA CLOSES AN ATYPICAL 2020 AND FACES 2021 FULL OF OPPORTUNITIES

Rotecna CEO Antonio Pinos during the Christmas speech. Photo: Rotecna. Every December, Rotecna brings all the company workers together at Christmas to take stock of the year. 2020 was atypical, as evidenced at the end of the year. The traditional Christmas snack could not be held, and the meeting had to be held in an outdoor location, large enough to guarantee distance between workers and comply with the security measures set by COVID-19. In the business field, as the CEO, Antonio Pinos pointed out, 2020 has been a year marked by the integration of Rotecna to the Danish group Skiold in July: “I am sure that this integration will bring work and professional opportunities for many people in Rotecna. Besides that, regarding the company, the door is open to new markets and to expand our range of products, which is good for the growth and future of Rotecna”. Appreciation towards the team, a distinct part of Pinos’ speech stated: “Rotecna is the people who work in it, and I am personally very proud to lead

this team. It is a great responsibility and an honour for me. I work here because Rotecna is an excellent place to work in.” In this sense, he pointed out some of the company’s facilities’ improvements to guarantee fair working conditions, like the heating installation in different warehouses, building new changing rooms, and acquiring tools that improve the employees’ quality of work. Finally, facing 2021, Rotecna will continue to work and bet on innovation, the design and manufacture of new efficient, sustainable, and profitable solutions for farmers in the pork sector.

ROTECNA IN THE TOP 500 LEADING COMPANIES

Rotecna, a leading company in the manufacture of equipment for pig farms, has been included for the fourth consecutive year in CEPYME’s ranking of the 500 leading growth companies in Spain. This initiative promoted by the Spanish Confederation of Small and Medium Enterprises (CEPYME) aims to identify, select, and promote the set of 500 leading companies based on the results they have obtained in recent years. In addition to these criteria, the ranking also assesses issues such as the capacity to generate employment, the innovation potential of organizations and their international projection. Precisely these aspects, the generation of employment, innovation, and international projection, together with the value of all the people who make up Rotecna, are the ones that the Rotecna’s CEO, Antonio Pinos, has highlighted, and those that he considers essential for the development of the company, and key to obtaining a recognition like this.

SOMETHINGABOUT THE CONGOST OF MONT-REBEI

This place is a a natural jewel between Catalonia and Aragon.

The Congost of Mont-rebei, natural border between Catalonia and Aragon.

In Spain, nature has sculpted authentic architectural wonders that compete in spectacularity. One of them is the Mont-rebei gorge, which acts as the natural border between Catalonia and Aragon. The Mont-rebei Congost, marked GR-1 (Corçà - Pont de Muntanyana), is a bridle path carved out of a river cliff’s walls. Over the years, the Noguera Ribagorçana River has eroded the Serra del Montsec into two parts: Montsec d’Ares (Catalonia) and Montsec de l’Estall (Aragon), creating impressive walls over 500 meters high in free fall and a minimum width of 20 meters in some sections. Mont-rebei is the only grand gorge in Catalonia that has not suffered the effects of current groundworks; it is maintained without any road or power line that crosses it. The fact 6

that no roads could be built to reach this site makes it one of the few virgin territories of both provinces. There have been several attempts to create a path along the gorge. In 1912, an attempt was made to dig into the stone to access its horseshoe shape. However, the need to carry water through the reservoir of Canelles caused water to cover this path. Later, in the 1960s, another higher course was made, which had to be rebuilt in 1984 after the re-growth of Canelles in 1977. In 2013 the Monfalcó walkways were opened, a natural path runs through the gorge, through an abandoned town of Finestres (Huesca), and crosses to La Masieta de Mont-rebei on a route of about 4 kilometres, linking Aragon and Catalonia through the gorge.

It has great appeal for climbers (except December through June when they must respect the breeding of the birds that nest on the stone walls), speleologists who can find a cave like the Colomera here, and hiking lovers, where they can practice without great difficulty, enjoying it in general and in some sections in particular, as in the case of an area of the road, half hidden in the rock with an exceptional landscape.

Visit the gorge Due to its colours, its dozens of unusual perspectives, the adrenaline rush from touring it, and its magnificent landscapes, the Montrebei Gorge visit must be on our agenda if we visit Lleida. Besides, it is an daytrip easily adaptable to all levels, both for those who are fit and those used only to short walks. The itinerary takes place in a canyon with walls that reach 500 meters high, crosses the Sierra del Montsec, and runs parallel to the Noguera Ribagorçana River on its way to the Pyrenees.

one way and another 2 hours back. However, the more athletic ones can continue one more kilometre until the second suspended bridge, the one with the Siege, from where you can access some great wooden stairs that, defying gravity, lead to the cliff’s top that connects to the Montfalcó route, in Huesca. In addition to a breath-taking landscape, not suitable for people with vertigo, the Congost de Mont-rebei offers an exceptional environment protected by the Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera, which is responsible for safeguarding the 600 hectares of the Catalonian area, which includes the gorge, the riverbank where otters live, the cliffs with their birds of prey, and a slope of the Montsec d’Ares with numerous oaks. The growth of this place’s fame has made this location no longer the solitary place that it must have been in other times. Still, the complicated access by road and the remoteness from large cities keep it safe from mass tourism.

The itinerary offered by the visit to the gorge rises gradually, without strong slopes, and suddenly, surprises come when you turn any rocky ledge: an incredible amphitheatre of cliffs appears before your very eyes, a small cave to be crossed or the reflection of the ridge on the turquoise coloured river. One of the most exciting points of the tour is the hanging iron bridge. Crossing it is part of the excitements of the day, especially for those who suffer from vertigo. It is short, and there is hardly any movement, so you will not leave any member of the group behind yet. The extension of the Camino Nuevo del Congost is three and a half km, and it is estimated that it can be done in about 2 hours

Kayak excursion through the congost.

ROTECMIX AUTOMATIC FEEDERS

The prolificacy continues to increase year after year. With it, the decrease in the average weight of piglets, increase in weight dispersion, mortality, and the number of animals that require special care. So much of our sows and transition farms’ productivity depends on our ability to provide the most disadvantaged piglets with what they need. THE PIGLETS’ FOOD Regarding the feeding of piglets in maternity, multiple studies demonstrate the benefits of the contribution of lacto-initiators, artificial milk and water, both in their growth during lactation and in their subsequent adaptation in the transition. After weaning, the piglets must adapt to a new environment, a different group of animals, and a new hierarchy. In addition to changing feed, the animal tends to learn to differentiate between thirst and hunger. Some studies show that up to 40% of piglets take more than 10 hours to eat 8

again after being weaned, 10% more than two days, and some up to four days. Therefore, it is typical for the vast majority of newly weaned piglets to decrease their growth rate, and some even lose weight. Consequently, it is crucial to help them adapt both food-wise and socially and in facilities that guarantee their comfort. As we have said, it is recommended to dispense water and feed to the piglets already in the lactation phase, in small quantities, but very often. The piglets that ingest feed during maternity begin to develop the enzymes that will help them better adapt to feeding with compound feed once weaned, starting to eat and grow earlier and with more significant daily weight gain. Once weaned, it is vitally essential that piglets start drinking and eating as soon as possible. Animals in maternity eat simultaneously approximately every hour and small amounts of milk. Once weaned, the piglets must start drinking and eating as soon as possible. For this to happen it is essential to offer food in the easiest way possible:

INCREASES THE DAILY WEIGHT AND PIGLETS’ VITALITY

ROTECMIX MIDI FOR TRANSITIONS

• By temporarily increasing feeding spaces until piglets create the hierarchy to use feeders in shifts, reduce the number of meals per day, and increase their intake speed. • Preparing porridge for the first days, making the transition from liquid to solid feeding more gradual, especially for smaller piglets. These should be prepared often and in small quantities to be as fresh as possible and maximise consumption.

BENEFITS • • • • •

Increases piglets’ daily weight and vitality gain. Improves the size homogeneity of the animals. Decreases mortality. Reduces manual labour. Reduces the production cost per piglet.

9

ROTECMIX AUTOMATIC FEEDERS

CHARACTERISTICS • Automatic food preparation. • Easily accessible dish with a sensor designed to minimise waste. • Adjustable solid / liquid ratio. • Mobile and easy to transport. • Designed to enable cleaning and disinfection. • Rotecmix mini for lactating piglets is installed in the separator and serves two places simultaneously. • Rotecmix midi for up to 45 piglets or a total weight of 35 kilos.

The use of acceptable practices, such as those specified, in the transition from liquid to solid food, contributes positively to: • Increasing the health and average daily gain of piglets. • Significantly reducing mortality. • Reducing the dispersion of animal weights in the same batch. With this in mind, Rotecna launches the new family of Rotecmix automatic feeders to offer farmers a tool that enables these practices in an easy, constant, hygienic, and effective way.

ROTECMIX MINI FOR MATERNITIES

ADAPTER FOR NI-2 LAMP

With the will to complete the family of nests for farrowing and weaning, Rotecna has released a new element that allows you to easily adapt most standard lamps to your NI-2s without leaking hot air. It supports the microclimate inside the nest and prevents drafts. By placing the ring and raising the lamp, we guarantee that it remains at the height set by legislation, without the need for an extended height screen. THE ADVANTAGES OF WORKING WITH TWO CLIMATES DURING FARROWING One of the main challenges in maternity wards is to reduce the piglets’ heat losses as much as possible without affecting the well-being of the sows, which is why the use of nests for piglets in maternity has increased significantly.

It is crucial to maintain the piglet’s ideal temperature inside the nest during the entire lactation period to ensure that all its energy is used for growth and not for thermoregulation.

Nests are an ideal tool to achieve a higher survival rate and a higher weight of the weaning piglets. They contribute to creating a protection space for newborns free of air currents and guaranteeing an optimal temperature for piglets since they maintain a suitable temperature for sows in maternity wards.

GLOBALPIG JORDI FARRÉS: “THE NI-2 WEANER OFFERS THE PIGLET GREATER COMFORT” With a capacity for 15,000 animals, this farm located in Castejón de Monegros works with Rotecna’s Ni-2 Weaner.

Jordi Farrés in one of the pens with Ni-2 Weaner installed. Photo: Rotecna.

Jordi Farrés’ bond with the pork industry begun in his childhood. The son of a rancher, this young vet spent his childhood surrounded by pigs, and that’s when he decided that was where his future was. Farrés currently works as a veterinarian responsible for the transition section of the Aragonese livestock company Cuarte S.L. Under his supervision is the Jalaebro 8 farm, located in the Oscense municipality of Castejón de Monegros. In their quest to achieve maximum well-being and comfort for the animals that stay on this farm, they relied on the installation of Rotecna’s Ni-2 Weaner. As he points out, in recent months, they have already been able to verify the main advantages of this product. What is the origin of the farm? Jalaebro 8 is an installation by Cuarte S.L., which began construction approximately three years ago and was done to use as a transition that housed piglets from a sows’ farm owned by the same company. 12

How is it distributed? The farm has 15,000 transition spots that are distributed in six equal areas. Each of them can accommodate up to 2,500 piglets in transition, with a total of 56 pens per room and between 40 and 45 animals housed in each enclosure. In this way, the piglets are housed on the farm for around six weeks, with a weekly rotation in each of the rooms that make up the facility. How many people work at the facility? We have five employees. We have a person in charge, Roque Campoverde, who has a long history and experience with livestock, and three people work with him, helping him in day-today work. And finally, I’m the vet. You recently installed the Rotecna Ni-2 Weaner. What led you to make this decision? We were mainly looking for a solution that would improve the piglets’ well-being upon arrival at the farm. To this end, we installed Rotecna’s Ni-2 Weaner because they provide greater comfort for the piglet, generating inside an area, a higher temperature, ideal for their rest. How do they work with Rotecna’s NI-2s? We have the nest lowered entirely during the first two weeks of transition. As the days goes

by, it gradually rises to reduce the temperature little by little and thus be able to provide greater comfort to the piglet adapting it to its ideal temperature. The Ni-2 Weaner are installed in the same way on all areas, covering almost the entire blind zone used as a bed. As the nest rises, the covered area is reduced compared to the blind spot, and thus the piglet can choose where it feels best to rest. The Ni-2 Weaner allows working with two climates in transition. What are the advantages of this when it comes to animal health? Working with two climates in transition offers advantages that go beyond the well-being of piglets. For the piglet, it is ideal because you create a higher temperature area where the animal will stay when it needs it. Besides generating an area with a lower or colder temperature, you make the piglet also defecate and carry out other activities in that area, leaving the rest area cleaner. Another advantage is that energy consumption is significantly reduced, making the farm more sustainable and optimising costs. Regarding animal health, nests allow greater ventilation of the rooms, which provides a better environment. Have they managed to reduce death rates? The use of nests can help to reduce mortality rates considerably in the first weeks of life. The piglet’s arrival at the transition farm is his most critical moment. In this sense, everything that can provide them with greater safety and comfort will help reduce mortality rates and improve production rates. Do they allow for a good cleaning? The plastic with which these nests are made is of good quality and easily cleaned. Plastic is a material that is always easier to clean and is therefore much more hygienic. 13

GLOBALPIG

Economically, does it compensate for the investment involved in the installation of Rotecna weaning nests? Yes. Working with nests in transition compensates for the extra cost of equipping the facility. Building the farm is only done once, but the energy expenditure is always there. With nests, the piglet will always have greater thermal comfort. Therefore, the installation of this product has a safe economic return. As for animal feed, how many feeds do you work with? In the transitions of Cuarte S.L., we work with five different types of feed. First, we have the lacto-replacement, a milk substitute for piglets with lower weight who need a greater caloric intake. Second, we have the lacto-initiator feed, a moderate protein feed as a flour that helps the piglet heave. Third, we have a prestarter, C1 and a C2 starter; finally, as the animals gain weight, we give them some of the first feed for fattening. 14

What other Rotecna products do you have on the farm? All the plastic products we have are from Rotecna. We have the panels that outline the pens, the TR5 weaning hopper, the Swing R3 hopper and the bowls. Of these, the TR5 stands out for being one of the best hoppers I have worked with in the transition stage. Its regulation is straightforward and allows the feeding of several piglets simultaneously, which is very advantageous. Regarding the panels, what advantages would you highlight? Plastic panels greatly facilitate cleaning compared to concrete partitions. Furthermore, the way they are installed, welded instead of screwed on, they have greater resistance and robustness. In general, what do you value about Rotecna? Mainly, we value the quality of their products, since we have corroborated their usefulness

and good finishes in all the time we have been working with them. Besides, we also value their technical service since they have always offered good support. Finally, I would highlight the research and work behind each of the products. In the face of existing health threats, what biosecurity measures do you adopt on the farm? We have implemented strict biosecurity measures on this farm because we consider this aspect vital in the pig sector’s future. We have a biosecurity fence around the perimeter and a single entrance to the farm with three distinct areas: a dirty area where we leave street footwear; after crossing it, we come to an intermediate zone where we change our clothes and from there we go to the clean area where all the clothes and shoes we wear are unique and exclusive to the farm.

for possible casualties that we may have on the farm. At the health level, what are your main concerns? In the current situation, the disease that all veterinarians working in the pig sector fear the most is African swine fever (ASF). To prevent its entry into our farms, we place a lot of emphasis on biosecurity. On the other hand, we also have other diseases known in the sector, such as PRRS, meningitis, diarrhoea postweaning, etc. Avoiding their appearance on the farm is possible if we work efficiently and implement adequate biosecurity measures.

What future challenges arise? We hope to be an industry standard in terms of weaning production for the company and yield healthy piglets that produce quality food and consumer insurance after a fattening phase on other farms.

On the other hand, to prevent trucks from entering our facilities, they give us the feed from the outside, and we do the entry and exit of animals in the same way, with loading areas that prevent the driver from entering the farm or having close contact with the farmer. Finally, we have a single outlet One of the rooms equipped with Rotecna products. Photo: Rotecna.

FUTURENEWS ECOLOGICAL FARM IN LLEIDA WITH 250 PIGS IN 60 HECTARES The animals occupy 10% of the area and move from one plot to another periodically.

Eduard Cau, the rancher who started this ecological farm. Photo: Rotecna.

Always dedicated to conventional pig production, four years ago, after learning about the organic pig projects that a close friend had, Eduard Cau set out to diversify his production towards organic pig farming. He began to learn about the production models implemented in other countries such as the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, and Australia. “When we began to investigate and learn how organic pig production was carried out, we saw that there were several models and important differences between them. What they all have in common is that they work with straw, without antibiotics, with organic food, and with high animal welfare levels. Still, they range from highly technical farms to simpler farms, like ours”, Eduard explains, adding: “We work with the’ camping’ model, which is the most widespread in the UK, but with some variations. In the United Kingdom, they use 20-hectare farms with 1,500 sows, that work for two years and are then dismantled to leave the ground to rest. We, on the other hand, think about 16

having a stable farm over time, and what we do is move the sows from one plot to another so that the land rests for months before occupying it again.” The main drawback of this type of management is that, apart from moving the sows and all the material periodically, the area needed multiplies, as does the initial investment of building this type of farm. In this sense, the Albi ecological farm project has meant an investment of 1.1 million euros.

The farm The facility has an area of 60 hectares and 250 sows. Animals occupy 10% of the total area, with rotational whereabouts, meaning there is no environmental impact from the slurry on the ground. “Having a sufficient area, the plots are occupied and vacated from time to time to put them to rest for months and give the grass a chance to grow again,” explains Eduard. He assures: “With this, high soil fertility is achieved, which is even appreciated in the colour of the soil,” and the farm does not require rafts to store the slurry or facilities for its treatment.

Besides, thanks to the soil’s high fertility, the growing grass represents 15% to 20% of the pigs’ diet. The rest of the feed is feed from organic cereals. Three people currently work on the farm handling 250 sows and the daily tasks: inspecting the animals’ condition, feeding them, putting straw in the booths, inseminating, monitoring deliveries, taking care of piglets, etc.

The Albi ecological farm works with the camping model. Photo: Rotecna.

Productivity “The ratio of jobs in this farm model is multiplied by three and by four since the animal handling and movement model requires it”, Eduard explains, adding that “it is important to note that we generate more stable jobs than are needed on a conventional farm.”

Biosecurity One of the fundamental foundations of an organic farm is that it cannot treat animals with antibiotics. Besides certain exceptions, if necessary, treatments have to be individual, and treated animals must be segregated because they can no longer be sold as organic. For this reason, in this production system, diseases are the main enemy of ranchers, who fight with biosecurity measures to prevent their entry. In this case, Eduard explains that the farm is isolated from other pig facilities by a radius of two kilometres. It has a four-kilometre perimeter fence with external “electric grass” to prevent access by wild boars and other animals that could be carriers of diseases. There is a biosecurity space between the fence and the farm five meters wide where there are never animals, which can only be accessed with farm clothing, and a truck for farm animals’ placement exclusively.

In the UK, the farms outdoors (exterior) have an approximate production of 24.5 piglets per sow per year, so the production is lower than that of conventional farms. “We, taking into account that we work with a longer lactation period, calculate that we will have an average of 20 piglets per sow, which, in a year, is an annual production of 5,000 piglets,” says Eduard. However, this figure could reach 15,000 piglets in one or two years when Eduard plans to expand the farm to 100 hectares and have a total of about 600.

Challenges In addition to expanding the farm’s surface to reach 600 sows and launching ecological fattening at Els Omellons (Lleida), another challenge they are working on is optimising food costs, since, if it is expected to reach 15,000 piglets a year for fattening, these will consume an average of 5,000 tons of organic feed. This is why, Eduard works with nutritionist experts on a study of the production of organic cereals. They have rented 60 hectares on three different farms, where they carry out tests to make ecological protein. “The goal is to find farmers who want to grow this protein in exchange for our commitment that we will buy the product from them,” he says. 17

PIGPRODUCTIONIN NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE HUNGARIAN PORK INDUSTRY The arrival of the ASF in Hungary in 2018 was a crisis in the sector.

Pork is an essential food in Hungary’s lifestyle, and the tradition of raising and eating pigs is deeply rooted in their culture. However, the swine population has stagnated in recent years due to the African swine fever (ASF), which has caused significant price rises, restrictions on Hungarian exports and has made the country a net importer.

Production According to the National Statistical Office, the pig population in Hungary is close to 2.9 million, a figure that has been declining in recent years. Mangalica is the national pig breed par excellence in Hungary. It is one of the oldest pig breeds in Europe, whose origin is around 1830. These 18

animals stand out for their long and thick hair, which allows them to adapt to the Hungarian steppe conditions. However, this breed represents only 2% of the national pig stock. These pigs are raised and slaughtered in Hungary, and the species is considered the fattest in the world, reaching up to 70% fat. Only 30% of the Mangalica meat produced remains in the country and is used in products such as sausages, chorizo, or bacon and is served in high-level restaurants. The remaining 70% is exported to Asia and America.

Impact of the ASF The arrival in Hungary of the African swine fever in April 2018 generated a crisis in

the Hungarian pig sector, causing the pig population to stagnate, which has generated significant increases in prices and restrictions on pork exports. According to the Hungarian Ministry of Agriculture, the country does not present active cases of ASF in domestic pigs but only in wild pigs. In the first quarter of 2020, 4,085 infected wild boars were detected in the European Union, of which 1,371 corresponded to Hungary. As a consequence, countries such as Serbia, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, and South Korea imposed temporary restrictions on the import of pork and wild boar from that country, which has meant a tremendous economic impact for the Hungarian pork industry due to the fall in exports and the consequent reduction of the national purchase price.

opportunities for foreign producers who want to open a gap in the Hungarian market and local producers who wish to strengthen their presence. As for Spain, the country ranks second among pork suppliers to Hungary, with a share of 18% of the total and a growth of 197% since 2015, surpassed only by Germany. On the other hand, Spain ranks ninth as a consumer of Hungarian pork exports, with a share of 2.9% of the total, making it a very relevant trading partner. Image of a pig farm in Hungary. Photo: Rotecna.

Meat market As we have mentioned, the ASF caused a drop in pork exports in 2018, which recovered slightly in 2019: while in 2018 exports fell 22.29% compared to the previous year, in 2019 they reached 339 million euros, 25.63% more than in 2018. However, the figures are far from the 348 million euros obtained in 2017. As for Hungarian pig products’ main destination markets, Romania stands out with a share of 34.30% in 2019, Italy and Croatia. The trend with its ups and downs recorded in exports, is different in terms of imports, as since 2016, Hungary has been an importing country and the trend has only been increasing since then. The reason is that, over the last three years, domestic consumption has exceeded local production levels. Thus, in 2019 the highest value was registered, with 333 million euros, representing an increase of 20.51% compared to the previous year. In this context, imports represent almost half the volume of Hungarian national production. Hungary has become a net importer of pork because there are significant growth

Consumption Pork is essential in Hungary’s lifestyle and is the main ingredient in the vast majority of dishes in its gastronomy, being the second most consumed meat in the country, behind poultry. Its consumption has grown in recent years, and pigs are the second most consumed animal protein in the country, with an average of 30 kilos per capita per year. This growth, in part, has occurred due to the reduction in the pork tax introduced by the Hungarian government in 2016, which went from 27% to 5%, intending to stimulate the consumption of this meat. This measure was very successful, as the competitiveness of companies and the national consumption of pork increased. Furthermore, the price decrease generated substantial savings for consumers.

Future According to the perspectives of the Agricultural Outlook 2020-2029 of the OECD, meat production and consumption levels are expected to reach a low point in the coming years due to multiple ASF outbreaks. However, Hungary is a country with great potential as a target market for the pork sector since Hungarians are pig lovers. Recent culinary trends may provide opportunities to enter that market. 19
