December 2021

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR We have reached the end of a complex 2021, in which we have not only had to learn to live with a pandemic, but we have had to know how to manage historical records in the price of electricity, scarcity and unreasonable increases in purchase prices of raw materials and components. However, the sturdiness of our company, with more than 30 years experience, and the strength, union and commitment of all the people who make up Rotecna has allowed us to maintain a good pace and continue innovating to offer suitable solutions to farmer’s needs. But not everything in 2021 has been obstacles to overcome. The year’s final stretch has been accompanied by the recovery of face-to-face turnout in the main sectoral events. In September, we were able to celebrate the first FIGAN Zaragoza postpandemic. We presented more than 20 novelties and were awarded for technical innovation with the Evofeed multiphase feeding system. In this context of relative normality, we closed the year satisfied with the work done, with good feelings and desire to continue working for the pork sector and exceeding our accomplishments to continue growing together. In 2022, we will continue with our commitment to innovation, close to our customers and quickly adapting to a complex, changing environment full of opportunities. Together, we will create profitable, efficient, durable and sustainable business models. We will do all this from the tenets that most identify us: quality, service, honesty, perseverance, effectiveness, consistently as a team and placing people at the centre of everything we do. Finally, in the hope that the new year will be better, happy holidays to all readers. Antonio Pinos, Rotecna’s CEO.

Little by little, we are recovering from the pandemic, and face-to-face attendance is returning to our lives. In the last months of 2021, it has been possible to celebrate the first post-pandemic fairs of the pork industry in which Rotecna has opted to participate in presenting the novelties developed throughout the months that we haven’t attended events of this type and to reconnect with our customers, listen to their concerns and thus always be able to offer the best solutions.

FIGAN From September 21 to 24, Zaragoza hosted a new edition of FIGAN, one of the most outstanding events in the Spanish agro-livestock scene, in which Rotecna participated again. Eight hundred twenty-seven exhibiting brands and more than 50,000 visitors went to the event. Throughout the four days the fair lasted, our brand presented more than 20 novelties to the public in a stand of 200 square meters. Among the products shown were the Dositronic G, 4

Rotecna’s electronic feeding system for pregnant sows, the Silotronic, the real-time silos content control system, and new electronic and manual feeders models. As explained by Oscar Toledano, commercial director of Rotecna, “in almost the two and a half years that have passed since the last edition of FIGAN, we have developed more products than in any previous period, and one of them, the Evofeed, the multiphase electronic feeding system for pig farms, has been awarded a mention for innovation, a fact that as a pioneering company, makes us proud.” On this issue, he adds: “The important thing today is innovation. Nobody buys products from us for what they are, they buy the products from us because of what they do and contribute. So, making products that are more efficient, smarter and have a cheaper production cost every day is vital for innovation.” Within the framework of the event, several technical conferences were also held, one

of them focused on slurry management. Rotecna also participated in this event with a presentation of the advantages and benefits of our Tecnapur product line, which allows separating the liquid and solid portion of the slurry to obtain a better performance in a very efficient way, with low operating costs and reducing the emissions of polluting gases. With all this, the first professional trade fair celebration after the pandemic stopped served to highlight the desire and need to create spaces where meetings could be held and trade for companies and professionals.

health challenges on farms. Alirio Barrios, the commercial manager of the south-peninsular area of Rotecna, offered a conference on how to prepare pig farms for the future.

Porciforum and Porc d’OR Lastly, Rotecna was also present during November at Porciforum (Lleida) and at the delivery of the Porc d’Or Awards, which on this occasion took place in Lleida (Porc d’Or Awards of Capa Blanca), and Seville (Porc d’Or Iberico Awards). We participated as one of the main sponsors on all occasions.

Where will we be in 2022? SEPOR From October 25 to 28, Rotecna also participated in the Livestock, Industrial and Agrifood Fair SEPOR, held in Lorca (Murcia). In the 54th edition of this event, our company was represented by the firm’s distributor in this region, Sumgasur. In addition, Rotecna participated in the International Symposium of Pig Farming, which included monographic workshops on health and biosecurity, vaccination plans for pigs, environmental and

About to close the year and we are already immersed in the preparations for the first fair in which we will participate next year, Agros, which will be held in Moscow (Russia), and where we will be able to present the innovations of our brand to the Russian market once again. In 2022 we will also travel to other great showcases such as the World Pork Expo (USA), Ildex Vietnam, or the European reference event for the meat industry, Eurotier, which will take place during November in Hannover (Germany).

SOMETHINGABOUT “ELS PASTORETS”, A CENTURIES-OLD TRADITION

Around Christmas, in Catalonia, there are many representations of this play by amateurs groups.

Image of a representation of “Els Pastorets”.

Els Pastorets are one of the most genuine exponents of Catalan popular culture. These traditional representations in the towns and cities of Catalonia have exceeded the religious and exhibition scope and have become a sign of identity of the place they represent. In addition, historically, they have been a theatre school where many of the actors and actresses of our country have debuted. The content of Els Pastorets deals with the birth of the announced messiah according to the Judeo-Christian tradition. Thus, we can find the adventures of some shepherds who receive the news of an angel who says that the messiah has been born. Since the shepherds receive the announcement, they want to go to Bethlehem, and this is where the forces of evil, and the forces of good, begin to intervene to help or prevent the little shepherds from arriving. 6

In this way, the plot is built from three stories: the first, the betrothal of Joseph and Mary, the couple in search of an inn and the birth; the second, the struggle between angels and demons; and the third, focused on the shepherds, humorously.

Origin The origin of Els Pastorets can be found in the medieval representations that were celebrated inside the churches on Christmas Day. This representation was met with an inevitable decline and decay from the sixteenth century, following the requirements of the Council of Trent, when illustrations of this type were banned in temples, so these representations were moved to the street and later to famous theatres. In the following years, this show grew under the influence of the Spanish Baroque theatre, many of the characters were defined, and the plot base was based on Christmas gospel stories.

To find the first texts of Els Pastorets, we have to place ourselves in the eighteenth century. Although, in Catalan, we already know of a text from the seventeenth century of Rosellonian origin: “Dramatic relationship of the Nativity of the son of God”.

had the help of the set designer Salvador Alarma and the composer Antoni Català for this. The work’s success was decisive for Folch i Torres, who was then 36 years old and considered the creator of the children’s theatrical genre, decided to continue working on theatrical compositions.

This genre received a boost from the nineteenth century, and new texts of pastorets, always in Spanish, were written. But in 1887, Miquel Saurina made the first modern version in Catalan, and in 1901 Frederic Soler Pitarra elevated the pastorets to the cultured theatre. Many authors have written versions of pastorets. Notable for their popularity are “Estel de Natzaret”, by Ramon Pàmies, from 1903; “Els Pastorets o l’Adveniment de l’Infant Jesús”, by Josep Maria Folch i Torres, 1916; and “La flor de Nadal”, by Francesc d’Assís Picas, from 1954.

The play is based on five acts and starred by Lluquet and Rovelló, two boys from a farmhouse who arrive at Bethlehem for magic reasons. St. Michael helps them prevent Satan and the demons from killing the Child Jesus when they get there. The work takes on a magical and laughing touch thanks to Lluquet’s stubbornness and the fear of poor Rovelló.

“Els Pastorets” of Folch i Torres The version of Folch i Torres was a success and became the most represented Pastorets text in Catalonia. This text premiered on Christmas eve 1916 in Barcelona. The Board of the Teatro Coliseu Pompeia had commissioned him a few months earlier to renew the Christmas play. He

“Els Pastorets” nowadays Currently, the staging of Pastorets is widespread in the Catalan-speaking territories. Along with Passions of Christ, they are the most deep-rooted traditional representations. Around Christmas, in Catalonia, there are many representations of this play by amateurs groups. They usually belong to entities such as athenaeums, parish centres, etc., which, at the same time, can belong to the Coordinator of Pastorets of Catalonia.

Technology

NEW HEAT DETECTOR

Given the increase in the number of farms that implement the cover and release system, and in anticipation of the approval of new legislation that prohibits the use of cages after insemination, Rotecna launches an automatic heat detector. Detecting the heat of sows in time is vital to improving fertility, prolificacy and reducing unproductive days. Farmers invest a lot of time in breeding tasks, which must be performed several times a day to detect heat at the right time, and which are exceptionally complicated when sows are grouped in parks rather than in individual cages. Rotecna has developed a new electronic heat detector that solves this problem effectively, allowing detection and marking the sows that are ready to be inseminated at the right time reliably and automatically. 8

Rotecna’s new heat detector, which can supplement the electronic individual feeding system for pregnant sows in the Dositronic G group, consists of a stainless steel structure with an inspection window, an antenna that detects electronic ear tags and a marking system that singles out the animal inside.

DETECTS AND MARKS SOWS READY TO INSEMINATE The Rotecna heat detector is installed in the pen where the sows are on the side of the antenna that identifies the electronic ear tag that each animal carries. In contrast, on the other side, there is a boar that attracts the sows that are in heat.

Function A simple but highly effective procedure characterises Rotecna’s new heat detector since it identifies the sows in heat according to the duration and number of visits they make to the boar through the inspection window. Sows in heat visit the male more frequently and for longer; it marks them when the system detects these patterns.

FEATURES: • Resistant and robust structure made of stainless steel. • It work s with the same type of electronic controls as the Dositronic G. • Animal marking system incorporated into the detector itself.

ADVANTAGES :

Easy installation in any type of pen. Labour savings and greater safety for operators. Reduction of non-productive days. Increased fertility and prolicacy. Notication of sows marked in the user program.

GLOBALPIG JAUME ALÒS:“SF3D MAKES IT MUCH EASIER FOR ANIMALS TO ADAPT” Alòs completed last year the last expansion of his farm with a new fattening area with a capacity for 1,000 pigs. Willing to continue with the family tradition, Jaume Alòs decided to take the reins of the farm that his grandfather built more than 70 years ago in the municipality of Almenar. Although they only had some sows and cows in the beginning, with the incorporation of their father to the business, the farm specialised in pig production and, little by little, increased its capacity. Years later, Jaume joined the team, opted for professionalisation and innovation, and introduced systems capable of optimising the operation of the facilities to be more competitive within the sector. In 2020, Jaume completed the last expansion of the farm with a new fattening shed with a capacity for 1,000 pigs. In the new room, it has the SF3D feeder from Rotecna and the polypropylene separator panels. 10

Why did you decide to become a farmer? For me, livestock farming is a family tradition that my grandfather started, and my father followed along with my mother. Seeing how they worked, I got that passion that they had for animals. At 19, I began to give myself entirely to working on our farm, first helping my father, who was in charge of the management, until the moment of his retirement, when I stepped forward and took the reins of the business. Then I thought it was necessary to make some changes to be more competitive, and in 2013 we made the first expansion in

the sow’s nucleus and hired staff outside the family. In 2020 we carried out a new addition in fattening and reached 1,600 pigs. How is the farm distributed? Our farm consists of a centre where the sows are (quarantine, gestation and maternity warehouses), weaning and a small part of the fattening. Then, we have three more fattening cores, one of our properties with a capacity for 1,600 pigs, another integrated one with 1,500 animals, and another on a rental basis with 460 fattening and weaning places. In the last warehouse we built,

which is in the first fattening core, we have two large pens, with a capacity for 500 pigs each, and with an individual weighing system that refers each pig to the area of the pen where the quantity and quality of feed appropriate to its weight are offered.

because it allows us to feed the pigs in two different ways: in the lower tray, they can take the feed with some water, while in the upper tray, they can eat the dry feed. This offered us an added advantage, as any pig from such a large batch can decide how to eat and feed.

How many people work on it? Our staff is made up of three employees, my wife and I. Of these three people, two are exclusively responsible for the nucleus of sows, with their weaning and fattening, and the third person serves as a wildcard and help in the rest of the areas, in the other cores, in anything that may be needed.

What benefits would you highlight from using SF3D? Something that surprised us a lot about this feeder is its operation since it is a very simple hopper to use. We control the feeder with slight exertion and minimum feed waste, something vital in the fattening phase. Another advantage of the SF3D is that regulation is minimal and very simple during the four months the pigs can be in the warehouse.

Why did you decide to install the SF3D feeder? Mainly because its characteristics answered two fundamental needs for us; first of all, because the SF3D is a large capacity hopper, which allows us to serve a large amount of feed; this was a requirement since having such a large batch of animals, we needed the hopper to have enough capacity so that the pigs can eat what was necessary with two fillings a day. Secondly, we decided on the SF3D hopper

How is the adaptation of animals to the feeder? In this warehouse, the pigs enter with a weight of between 18 and 22 kilos. In these large pens, animals enjoy a high level of animal welfare, but what is surprising is how quickly they understand where the food is, and acclimatisation is not a problem. The SF3D greatly facilitates the adjustment of animals, especially the first 30 11

GLOBALPIG Overall, what do you value about Rotecna? We have been working with Rotecna since its beginning. So, in addition to knowing all the products in its catalogue and the novelties that are coming out, we value the quality service it offers, the closeness with the people of the company, and the fact that, if there is any doubt or something to solve, they are immediately willing to answer.

The room has manipulable material such as the anti-stress chain. Photo: Rotecna.

days, because it allows pigs to access the feed easily and without complications. Does it allow a good cleaning? When cleaning the warehouse and all feeders, it is straightforward to clean the SF3D because it is a feeder with no complications or corners of difficult access for cleaning. In this way, with the system we use, the cleaning time and especially the final results, are very satisfactory. With this, there are no dirty areas that would imply having to repeat the cleaning.”. In addition to this feeder, what other products has Rotecna installed on the farm? We have a significant part of the products from Rotecna’s catalogue. In this new fattening warehouse, we have installed polypropylene panels, which have helped us have a very versatile farm that is easy to clean. The warehouse always looks clean because the material benefits it and does not cause problems. Outside of fattening, in maternity wards, we have practically the entire range of Rotecna products: the floor, the heating plates, the PVC fences, the weaning feeders, the dispensers, etc. 12

Given the existing health threats, what biosecurity measures have you adopted on the farm? We have biosecurity measures based on access control: dressing rooms at the farm entrance, clothes for exclusive use within the facilities. We try to apply everything we can within our needs. More can always be done, and we always look to implement that possible improvement, but we try to make everything that we do helpful. What future challenges are there for the farm? On our farm, we have many projects, but to carry them out, the budget must be right. One that is on the table and is already working on is making small extensions in the nucleus of sows to be more competitive. In addition, my eldest daughter has decided that she wants to continue with our business and, when one more person enters, we have to increase the volume so that we can all live from what we enjoy.

FUTURENEWS THE UNIVERSITY OF CONCEPCIÓN (CHILE) WORKS ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF A VACCINE AGAINST LAWSONIA

Alvaro Ruiz G.: “Our aspiration is under no circumstances to compete with the commercial vaccine, but to offer more options to the farmer.” Álvaro Ruiz G. in the experimental unit. Photo: Álvaro Ruiz G.

In Chile, all farms are seropositive to Lawsonia intracellularis, a disease that can cause a severe digestive problem in pigs and can mean significant economic losses for farmers. Last September, the University of Concepción in Chile began a project to develop an alternative injectable vaccine to control this disease. To learn more about this project, we spoke with Álvaro Ruiz, associate professor at the University of Concepción de Chile and researcher of this project. What is Lawsonia intracellularis? It is a bacterium that, as the name suggests, is intracellular. 14

It causes a severe digestive issue in intensively produced pigs, especially in new herds, causing significant damage and economic losses. What impact does it have on the Chilean pig sector? Currently, in Chile, all farms are HIV-positive in Lawsonia. Although there are commercial vaccines for its control (an oral one administered with water, and another injectable one, from two large international pharmaceutical companies,) vaccination is relatively recent, and Lawsonia is still a significant problem. Specifically, it can cause, mainly, two different cases: an acute state, which can be fatal,

with hemorrhagic enteritis, and a chronic one, where there is a thickening of the wall of the intestine, which implies a progressive thinning of the animals due to malabsorption of nutrients in the intestine. What effects does the entry of this disease into a farm have? When it enters for the first time and has no antibodies, it produces an acute state, with high mortality. Then chronic and/or subclinical conditions that seriously affect the productive parameters have a tremendous economic impact. In the end, all subclinical and chronic diseases are a big problem, as you don’t realise you have it until it’s very apparent.

Image of the ship that has been adapted as an experimental unit for the development of the Lawsonia vaccine. Photo: Álvaro Ruiz G.

When and how did the project to develop a vaccine for Lawsonia intracellularis begin? I am part of a team made up of professionals from the Faculties of Veterinary Sciences and Biological Sciences of the University of Concepción that has been developing vaccines for ten years. Specifically, we work on diseases that need research and a solution. In this line, seven years ago, we started a work project on Lawsonia, when there was only the oral vaccine, not the injectable one. We began to investigate the possibility of having an alternative injectable vaccine for the control of this disease. Thus, we managed to design a prototype vaccine, with which we won a project funded by the Chilean government that allowed us to carry out all the tests and obtain an initial formulation with an immune response. We have just been awarded a second project to select a better quality adjuvant and adjust the antigen concentration to achieve better protection.

antigens in the vaccine prototype. We have three different antigens, and now we’re going to try them together and separately to see which option offers the best antigenic response. In the second stage, we will carry out a trial consisting of an experimental inoculation with animals vaccinated with our vaccine and with a commercial vaccine. Our aspiration under no circumstances is to have a better response to the commercial vaccine but to get as close as possible to it to offer the farmer more vaccination options.

What is the project? The project began in September and will last two years. In the first stage, we will test different adjuvants and different concentrations of the

What are the characteristics of this experimental unit? It is a warehouse with a capacity for 90 animals up to 45 kilos, distributed in three pens, the floors

What phase of the trial are they in? Now we are in the first phase in which we have to demonstrate again, with the new formulation, that there is no local reaction or inflammatory process in the injection area. It will be a study with 20 animals focused on taking samples at the injection area (biopsies) to show no adverse effects and evaluate the serological response.

of which are mounted with the slats of Rotecna, which collaborates in this project. The pens are designed to receive animals at weaning. We buy the animals from a local producer of intensive production and a high sanitary standard to carry out the tests. There are not always pigs in the experimental unit.

“In two years, we hope to have something appealing enough for the university to give it to some pharmaceutical company .” How did the possibility of collaborating with Rotecna arise? After my experience working in production, research, and as an advisor to some companies, I designed this unit. Therefore, it has a shower area at the entrance and a space for employees and the animal warehouse; it is a unit designed to conduct tests and not house animals permanently. Initially, it was a unit with cement 16

floors. Still, this material has its drawbacks: the cleaning is more complex and not so hygienic, the state of the cement influences the welfare of the animals (if it is very smooth, they slip, if it is too rough, it generates problems in the nails), so, with the idea of improving it, and as I knew the excellent quality of Rotecna’s slats, I contacted the distributor of the brand in Chile to give us a quote. Our pleasant surprise was that, after reaching Rotecna, the company donated the slats for the experimental unit, for which we are very grateful. In how many years do you expect to have developed a vaccine for Lawsonia intracellularis? The development of these studies is slow and more so in universities, where we do not have access to the types of adjuvants handled by pharmaceutical companies, which are very well-kept secrets. In two years, we hope to have something appealing enough for the university to give it to some pharmaceutical company since the university does not intend or have the facilities to produce a vaccine industrially; we only have a small vaccine production unit for a few doses. What benefits do you hope to offer the sector with the development of this vaccine? That there is an alternative injectable vaccine. At the moment, the university is already in talks with a pharmaceutical company interested in our study, so we are working to advance these negotiations and the project.

PIGPRODUCTIONIN EXPORT, THE ENGINE OF THE PORK INDUSTRY IN CHILE

High levels of technology and strict sanitary measures have positioned Chile as the sixth largest exporter of pork in terms of volume.

Weaning pen on a farm in Chile. Photo: Rotecna.

In recent years, pork exports have become the growth engine of the Chilean pork industry, which exports 81% of its production to more than 60 countries worldwide. This evolution has been possible thanks to the different players in the sector, which has turned Chilean pork into an efficient industry capable of adapting to the challenges that health and environmental demands have posed over the years.

effort of the pork industry to be more efficient in all its processes. Pork production in Chile is characterised by being enormously intensive, with high levels of technology, vertically integrated into the different links of the chain and concentrated in a few players. Thanks to this technification, Chile can export more than 80% of its total pork production.

Exports Production Currently, the pork industry is the second most essential meat production in Chile, behind poultry. In 2020, pork accounted for 36% of the total meat produced in Chile, with 574,000 tons. One of the keys to this number lies in the great 18

The Chilean pork industry can export to more than 60 markets worldwide, so exports are the growth engine of the pork industry in the country. After more than 25 years of work, Chile occupies the sixth position in the ranking of pork exporting countries in volume

and the thirteenth position in value. Thus, the export growth of the pork industry has been increasing, going from exporting 3,500 tons in 2000 to more than 450,000 tons in 2020 (Graph 1). In the past year, exports increased by 25% in tonnes and 39% in value compared to 2019. The main destinations for Chilean pork were China (67%), which maintains first place, followed by Japan (14%) and South Korea (13%). Thus, the Asian market accounted for 94% of total exports in the last year. In tons, China has remained the primary destination market, reaching 336,000 tons. The secret of this export potential is, possibly, in strict compliance with all sanitary requirements, both in Chile and in the export destination

markets. However, to continue growing in this aspect, a precise territorial planning regulation is necessary to increase the exportable supply and thus maintain Chile’s position in foreign markets.

Imports As for pork imports, in the last year, they showed an increase of 5%, going from importing 151,000 tons in 2019 to 159,000 tons in 2020. This upward trend, which has been taking place year after year for a decade, is explained by growing national demand. On the other hand, the leading countries of origin of imports were the United States (47%), Brazil (37%), the EU (8%) and Canada (4%).

Consumption During the last year in Chile, Pork consumption reached 268,000 tons, representing 19% of total meat consumption, with a per capita figure of 13.8 kg per person per year. In this way, pork is the third most consumed meat in Chilean households.

Initiatives to promote sustainability The pork industry in Chile has developed different projects to advance in terms of the industry’s sustainability. In 1999, the first Clean Production Agreement (APL) was signed, which addressed waste management or odours issues. Years later, in 2005, the pork industry

signed the second APL, which on this occasion included different objectives on occupational hygiene and safety, slurry management, odour management, etc. Thanks to these sectoral initiatives, Chilean pigs have made progress in multiple aspects of sustainability and, above all, environmental performance. On the other hand, for almost 20 years, the Association of Pig Farmers of Chile (ASPROCER) has carried out different projects to improve the sector: the Swine SME Project (20172019) to promote the use of technologies for the treatment of slurry in small and medium enterprises; the Community Relations Project (2015), to know and understand the social reality of the communities that live in the area of direct influence of the farms of pigs, and the Public Good for Competitiveness Project (2019), which sought to improve sustainability and enhance the global recognition of Chilean food products and companies, through the development of certifiable sustainability standards. On the other hand, ASPROCER has been working on animal welfare issues since 2004 and has set up a committee that has developed a manual of good practices.

Future With all the above, the pork industry in Chile presents excellent commercial opportunities, even more so if we consider the projections of the demand for pork at a global level. However, to take advantage of them, it is necessary to face the challenge of developing an increasingly sustainable production, meeting the levels of quality and flavour required by the markets. As we have seen, in recent years, the Chilean pork industry has successfully implemented different initiatives to advance in this regard, allowing the country’s pig to continue on the path of efficiency and sustainability. 19
