LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Despite the increase in the prices of raw materials for feed production and the energy cost, the Spanish pork sector managed to close in 2022 as the main European producer, thanks to its efficiency and productivity. We are indeed facing a complex year full of challenges for our professionals, but it is also true that our sector has always stood out for its resilience, its great capacity for adaptation and its ability to find solutions. To continue as we are, it is fundamental to work together and maintain focus on such important aspects as animal welfare, sustainability, energy self-sufficiency, health, digitization, and the circular economy. These are some of the challenges that the pig sector must continue to face this year, without forgetting the threat of ASF and the PRRS. It is also worth noting the need to carry out clear and transparent communication, which allows explaining to the public opinion the weight of the pig sector in the economy, as well as its exemplary role when it comes to adapting to circumstances, improving, and improving day by day.

Faced with this issue, Rotecna continues to be on the farmers´ side and always offer the most efficient solutions. With this in mind, in March we will be at FIGAN, the main event of the national agricultural sector, which will be held in Zaragoza. From March 28th to the 31st, we will present at our stand (Hall 8, stand D-E / 9-12), with the latest developments in pig equipment, giving special attention to equipment for precision livestock and sustainability.

In addition, truthful to the commitment of bringing our solutions to pig farmers in every corner of the planet, from March 8-10th, we will travel to Thailand, where we will participate in a new edition of the VIV Asia fair, initially scheduled for 2020 and postponed due to the pandemic. Visitors can find us in Hall 2, stand 2690.

SANT JOSEP FAIR

This event has been a direct witness of agricultural and livestock development over the years.

With the arrival of March, Mollerussa (Lleida) is preparing to experience what is possibly its most traditional event, the “Fira de Sant Josep”, an agricultural event catalogued as the Catalan Fair of Agricultural Machinery. With its origin in 1872, this event has been a direct witness of agricultural and livestock development over the years and thanks to its professionalization, has managed to position itself as an internationally recognised contest.

History

The centennial fair that we know today has little to do with the one that emerged in 1872 when a group of Mollerussa residents proposed the celebration of a weekly market and two annual livestock fairs, one in spring and another in autumn, to the mayor of the municipality. But it was in 1985 when the spring fair, which was held from January 6th to 8th, was moved to the 19th of the same month, within the feast of Sant Josep. At that time, it was also decided to cancel the autumn fair.

In its beginnings, the event was exclusively dedicated to livestock, thus responding to the needs of the time in the region of Pla d’Urgell (Lleida), of which Mollerussa is the capital. However, since 1950 with the proliferation of tractors as substitutes for the mule, the event took a new direction and began a series of exhibitions of agricultural and livestock machinery that, little by little, were replacing the old cattle fair and turning the “Fira de Sant Josep” into a synonym of agricultural and livestock modernisation in the lands of Lleida.

Growth in the second half of the twentieth century

With the adaptation to the new times and new technologies, throughout the 60s and 70s, the fair experienced its moments of maximum growth. The increase in exhibitors, news, commercial transactions, and also visitors made the event a must for anyone who wanted to stay up to date with the new trends in the agricultural and livestock sector. In this sense,

6 SOMETHING ABOUT

the number of exhibiting brands went from 47 in 1960 to 125 in 1966, 211 in the 1972 edition and 314 in 1979. As happens nowadays, during the 80s there was a slight stagnation due to the crisis that affected the sector which it later recovered from. Thus, in 1996 the fair had 278 exhibitors, a figure that grew to 308 a year later.

Commitment to training

If the presentation of the tractor meant a change in the direction of the fair in the 50s, it was also notably marked by the commitment to training. In 1980 a new stage began with farmer training being included in the fair agenda, ranchers and industrialists gave different conferences on topics related to the diverse agricultural and livestock sectors.

construction, functional, safety and respect for the environment, and to ensure technical progress for agricultural, livestock or industrial activities.

The fair today

Currently, the fair continues to take place around March 19th, the San José festival. As a multisectoral event, the exhibition of agricultural machinery and other accessories for agriculture and livestock stand out. Also noteworthy are the exhibition halls, used in the event since 1985, with stands of various local companies and entities and the Motor Show, located in the public swimming pools. The technical conferences and craft stalls complete the annual program of the Sant Josep fair, which already exceeds 70,000 m2.

Received as authentic forums for debate and analysis since its inception, these technical conferences have enjoyed a great welcome by professionals, with good participation scores, and over time have been consolidated as one of the pillars on which the fair is currently based.

Other highlights in recent years have been the call for the Award for Agricultural, Livestock and Agro-industrial Facilities that is summoned within the outline of the fair and is dedicated to rewarding agricultural, livestock and agroindustrial contraptions that represent a notorious advance from the point of view of

SLURRY ACIDIFICATION SYSTEM

Rotecna continues to expand its range of Tecnapur products for the recovery of slurry and the reduction of emissions.

In this sense, we have developed the slurry acidification system, which allows reducing ammonia emissions from slurry into the atmosphere when it is in storage ponds and, also when it is being applied, with a 50% reduction. In addition, the system offers a resulting slurry with an agronomic value that improves and optimizes fertilization.

How does it work?

The Tecnapur acidification system works after a solid-liquid mechanical separation. During the process, controlled automatically, an acid is injected that reduces the pH of the slurry to the desired point, <6.5 pH. This reduction is controlled with flowmeters and pH sensors, installed at the inlet and outlet of the system. It treats of a compact equipment that allows to reduce of an automatic form the pH of the slurry that enters in the raft.

ADVANTAGES:

• Reduces slurry ammonia emissions during storage in the raft by up to 50%.

• Constantly reduces the pH of the slurry leaving the raft.

• Improves the agronomic value of slurry

• Allows the slurry from the pond to be injected directly into a sprinkler irrigation system, drastically reducing application costs and improving fertilisation by doing it in fractions as the crops develop.

FEATURES:

• A simple, compact and automatic system.

• Real-time readings of the state of the slurry.

JORDI BENERIA: “ EVOFEED HELPS US REDUCE THE PIGLETS’ DIGESTIVE ISSUES”

Jordi Beneria was clear about his commitment to having a weaning farm with the latest technologies available. So, after the last addition carried out last year in the family’s farms, Agrobeneria, this farmer wagered on the installation of Rotecna’s multiphase feeding system, Evofeed, in addition to the TR7D feeder and the Ni-2 weaning system. In this issue of Informativo Porcino Jordi Beneria tells us about the management and advantages after almost a year of using them in his facilities.

When did you decide to commit yourself to livestock?

It was in 2012 when I finished studying in a vocational training programme. At that time the family farm changed course and we went from sows to weaning, and that’s when, I thought it was a good time to join the family business.

What is the origin of this farm?

In 1974 my family decided to undertake this adventure and it was then that they built a closed-cycle farm. Later, in the 90s we expanded the facilities to become a sowsonly farm. Finally, around 2010, we decided to change and restructure all our facilities waging exclusively on weaning. Finally, last year, we made a completely new warehouse.

How is it distributed?

We have three areas: the newest one, which has a capacity for 4,000 piglets; Then we have two more warehouses, one with 2,000 places and another with 1,600. The largest and the most recent of all has four aisles with space for 1,000 animals on each side. In each corridor, we have 24 pens, with 42 animals in each of them.

How many people work there and how are the tasks distributed?

We are currently two people on the farm and my mother helps us in the office since there is always a lot of paperwork to do and it is a complex task. In the pens, much of the work is done in the morning, dividing tasks by zones, while in the afternoon we commit ourselves more to maintenance and revision tasks so that everything is ready.

10
GLOBAL PIG
The Agrobeneria farm made its last expansion last year waging on Rotecna’s multiphase feeding system.

Why did you choose the Evofeed multiphase feeding system?

When we made the weaning pens, we wanted to have the latest technologies. In this way, one of our priorities was to have an automatic multiphase feeding system that was easy to use, and that would allow us to easily manage the three types of feed we use in weaning. This was our most important necessity. We have always worked with Rotecna products, and when they offered us this system, we decided to try it.

How do you work with this system?

We have three silos, since the feed we give at weaning is based on three different foods (lactoinitiator, starter 1 and starter 2), and we have two transitions. These are prepared through the digital screen installed on the system, where we can see the feed administered by pens and the scheduled mixtures. The system has a very selfgoverning and simple way of functioning, and all we do is check that the amounts of feed and mixtures have been supplied correctly.

How do you schedule transitions with your system?

We program them at the beginning of breeding and according to the size of the pigs. In general, we automate them, but they can vary depending on the piglets. The good thing about the Evofeed system is that it allows us to modify the transition days at the beginning of the breeding phase. Thus, depending on the weight with which the piglets enter, we can make the first transition shorter or longer.

What are the main advantages offered by Evofeed?

Evofeed allows us to supply the feed (or feed mixture) we want in each of the pens very precisely. In this way, the animals can have the food for them due to their weight and age, and transfer to the next stage progressively, which helps us reduce the piglets’ digestive problems. Another advantage is meal timing since you can schedule several during the day and thus always have fresh feed in the feeder.

In the work organisation and management aspects, what are the advantages? Is it easy to use?

The most important advantage is that Evofeed is a system that does not give you any extra work. This is a very important time saver. As for its use, it is enough to program transitions. It is a very easy-to-use, comfortable and reliable system.

Also speaking of feeding, they have the TR7D feeder. Why did you decide on this model?

We decided on the TR7D because it is an innovative, large capacity feeder that allows us to serve a large amount of feed.

What benefits stand out from its use?

Its main advantage is that it allows several piglets to feed at the same time, unlike other smaller feeders. In addition, it has a very simple regulation system and can be cleaned very easily.

How do animals adapt to it?

They adapt very well because it is very accessible. Upon arrival, the piglets also have a Rotecna adaptative feeder which they can feed from, although most piglets are started directly at the TR7D feeder.

They also installed Rotecna’s NI-2 Weaning. What led you to make this decision?

We installed them when we made the last pen, therefore, we have only worked with them quite recently. We wanted the piglets to have maximum welfare and energy savings. Following the advice of someone who already had them installed and who had good results with this product, we decided to install it. Under the nest, the pigs have a good temperature, since a microclimate is generated with their heat, and this means savings in farm heating.

How do you work with NI-2 Weaning?

Daily work is very comfortable. During the first days, when the pigs are small, we have the covers down and as they grow, we lift them; also depending on the desired temperature, since the objective is to generate the ideal temperature for the piglets’ welfare.

What are the advantages of working with Ni-2 in transition?

The most important advantage is the comfort that the piglet has. They like to be under the nest. The feeling of well-being thanks to the microclimate that is generated is very snug.

Have they managed to reduce mortality rates?

The pork sector is going through a delicate moment in terms of health. Pens with smaller piglets need more care and comfort, something that Ni-2 weaning provides, thus contributing to reducing mortality. If the pig is hot on its arrival at weaning, it starts off much better.

The most important advantage of Ni-2 is the comfort that the piglet has.

Do they allow a good cleaning?

Yes. By simply raising the deck we can clean and disinfect the pen without further issues.

What other Rotecna products have you installed?

We have slats, feeders, drinkers, bowls, PVC separators, etc. The whole farm is equipped, almost entirely, with Rotecna products. Above all, we value the quality of Rotecnas’ products, its durability and innovation; it is a brand that always offers us state-of-the-art solutions.

Healthwise, what are your main concerns?

Right now, the PRRS. The last strain, Rosalia, is a disaster and is causing a significant decrease in piglets.

Given existing health threats, what biosecurity measures do you have on the farm?

We try to be as cautious as possible. In the enclosure of the farm only feed trucks and animal transport enter and leave. We have arranged the low container away from the farm, we have limited visits and we only have those of the veterinarian, etc. The maximum possible measures must be taken.

What are the challenges for the future?

Right now, the most important thing is to move forward and overcome the health and supply price crisis plaguing the sector. On the other hand, we would like to complete the renovation of the farm.

INDUSTRY 4.0 APPLIED TO PIG FARM EQUIPMENT

The main challenges the pig industry faces are the environmental, economic and social sustainability. And to improve all these aspects applying digital technologies and industry 4.0 concepts is crucial.

To reduce the water and carbon footprint, the emissions of GHG and air pollutants such as ammonia, and avoid the pollution by incorrect use of pig slurry, it is essential to make efficient use of feed and water, empty the pits of the barns often, separate the liquid and solid phases of slurry, acidify or cover the slurry lagunes, characterize the different nutrients of the pig slurry and apply it in the right dose to the right moment according to the needs of the crops.

The main cost of pig production is feed, so to improve the farmers’ profits focusing on reducing feed use is essential. Feed waste must be reduced, feed consumption must be controlled and maximized to improve digestive performance and feed conversion rate, adapt

the diet to the animal’s need in every phase, and data collection and processing to detect problems and areas of improvement.

The second main costs are piglets, so reducing piglet mortality has a very positive effect on the business. Sows must be kept in the right corporal condition, increase sow feed intake in farrowing to increase milk yield and fertility and prolificity of next delivery, increase colostrum and milk intake of the piglets, have a sufficient lactation period, improve the transition between milk and feed, improve the transition between different diets, adapt the environment to the needs of the animal in every phase, etc.

We must be aware of the importance of the perception of society about pig farming in many aspects. On one side we need to make our farms

attractive to our labor force to attract and retain talent and reduce as much as possible the number of people required to take care of our animals. New generations are native digitals and they like to work with digital devices, we have to automatize all the processes we can, improve the working and safety conditions, provide comfortable facilities, and so on.

On another side consumers are every day more concerned about how their food is produced beyond food safety, giving a lot of importance to animal welfare, so we should go to systems that limit the use of crates and stalls, having the sows in group pens and loose farrowing, providing enrichment material, more space, noncompetitive controlled feeding systems, etc.

There are also changes in the meat consumption trends, some of them because of the concern of how animals are raised and their environmental footprint. We have the means to produce animals with high welfare in a sustainable way, but we have to apply them and make everything as good as possible. We have to improve the image of our farms so people see modern and clean facilities, we also have to be proud of what we do, share it and explain our story to counter the campaigns against our industry.

APPLICATION OF IOT SENSORS TO MONITOR

• Health state of the animals by their behavior and habits, feed and water consumption.

• Environment conditions, temperature, humidity, CO2 and NH3 levels.

• Nutrient composition of pig slurry, application flow, place and time of application.

• Stocks and levels of feed in silos, water in tanks, manure in pits.

• Control of the consumption of energy, water, feed, disinfectants, medicines.

AUTOMATIZATION AND ROBOTS

• Automatic feed delivery systems.

• Automatic mixing systems to make diet transitions.

• Electronic feeding systems to reduce feed waste, control and maximize feed consumption and feed by phases according to animals’ needs.

• Automatic detection of weight and corporal state to feed animals according to their needs.

• Automatic sow heat detection.

• Automatic environment control systems.

• Automatic slurry and manure handling systems.

Let’s see some examples of how to apply industry 4.0 to achieve these:

• Jet washing and disinfection robots.

We have the knowledge and technologies to face all the challenges we have in front of us, if we apply them, we will have a bright and amazing future for us and our farms.

The cost of the farms represents less than 10% of the production cost, so it is completely viable to face these challenges.

However, at Rotecna we are aware of the challenge that implementing technology in a pig farm successfully represents. This process must be done gradually, starting with the technologies that have a big impact on the farmers’ profits and wellbeing, and making sure the user interface is simple enough so that everybody can use them.

16

For this reason we started by the electronic feeding systems for gestation (Dositronic G) to ensure a proper control of feed intake of sows, so they have the right body condition, which determines its performance. The system is very simple to install even in a retrofit building, and there is almost no need to train the sows to use it, as its free access stall it has a very intuitive use.

Then we developed the first real friendly to use electronic feeding system for farrowing (Dositronic M) to reduce feed waste and labor maximizing feed intake, productivity and piglets’ performance.

We followed with a wireless silo level control system (Silotronic) to improve the control of feed stocks and improve the logistics of feed manufacturing and delivery.

We have lately launched a computerized control of feeding systems (Evofeed) that allows to control the amount of each feed delivered to the animals and make a progressive transition between them, in order to deliver the amount of feed that every animal needs by its size and avoid health problems because of the abrupt change of diet. All this without the need of scales or electronic feed valves.

Our product development department is currently working on different projects to keep implementing easy to use technologies to other products to keep improving animals’ welfare and performance and farmers life and profits that you will be enjoy soon.

SOUTH KOREA , ONE OF THE LARGEST CONSUMERS AND PORK IMPORTERS

South Korea stands out for being one of the countries in the world with the highest domestic demand for pork. Despite this, the South Korean pork industry is developing towards an efficient and modernised sector, while, little by little, new farms appear. To cope with its high demand, the South Korean pork sector relies on imports and is currently one of the world’s largest raw and processed pork importers, importing around half a million tons a year.

Structure of the South Korean pork sector

Changes in the livestock sector and emerging diseases have had a lot to do with defining the structure of South Korea’s pork sector. Falling wholesale pork prices prompted South Korean farmers to reduce their pig register, from 11.33 million in 2010, to 11.28 million in 2020.

On the other hand, the number of pork producers and pig farms has also experienced

a sharp decline in recent years. According to 2020 data, there are about 5,000 farms in South Korea, a lower figure than the 8,000 in 2009, and far from the 24,000 that the country had in 2000. In this sense, the South Korean pork sector is in a transformation phase in which small low-tech farms are disappearing while significant investments are made for the construction of new facilities.

Consumption

It is estimated that, in recent years, pork consumption in South Korea per capita has been around 27kg. However, in 2020 it was slightly lower because of the strong social distancing measures imposed by the South Korean government due to the Covid-19 pandemic. These restrictions affected restaurants (which comprise a large part of the consumption) and schools, where there was a sudden decrease in consumption. On the other hand, the demand for pork to consume at home increased in that

18 PIG PRODUCTION IN

period, consolidating this food as the preferred option of South Koreans when it comes to consuming meat at home.

Commerce

The high consumption of pork in South Korea has led the country to depend on pork imports to meet domestic demand. In 2020, the Asian country imported pork worth a total of 1,382 million USD, a figure somewhat lower than in previous years due to the reduction in consumption due to the restrictions of the pandemic. Its main suppliers were the United States, Germany, Spain, Canada and Chile (Table 1).

As we have seen, Spain is listed as the third largest supplier of pork to South Korea. In 2020, it exported 54,255 tons to the Asian country, worth approximately 192 million euros. The vast majority of Spanish exports to South

Table

Korea (98%) correspond to frozen meats and offal, while the rest are bacon and processed product exports, which coincides with the nature of pork imports from the South Korean market, which consist of frozen meats, offal and bacon.

It is worth mentioning that between 2013 and 2018, Spanish pork exports to South Korea grew uninterruptedly. However, in 2019, and, above all, in 2020, with the

pandemic, they regressed significantly, starting a recovery in 2021.

Future forecasting

The South Korean pork market brings together different strategic elements of great interest. Due to its size, it is a market with around 52 million inhabitants with a high purchasing power correlated with its high standard of living. In addition, pork is the main source of animal protein for South Korean consumers after fish, being one of the markets with the highest consumption of pork worldwide per capita. For this reason, South Korean pork imports are expected to continue to increase in the coming years, reaching 450,000 tons by 2030. On the other hand, the number of pigs is expected to increase as the wholesale price does.
