LETTER FROM THE EDITOR As we reach the end of the year, it is time to assess how 2023 has been and how we have faced the challenges posed to us and analyse those that remain to be addressed. This year has been marked by the threat of African swine fever (ASF) in 13 European countries. Maintaining biosecurity measures and all the necessary precautions in importing piglets has been essential to remain free of this disease. The Spanish professor José Manuel Sánchez-Vizcaíno, whom we spoke with in this Rotecna World, leads a European project developing an effective and safe vaccine against ASF. Sustainability and proper slurry management are other challenges that have marked this year, with the European regulations being enforced on 1 January 2023, obliging pig farms to implement measures to reduce ammonia emissions. Investing in new technical improvements is, therefore, an obligation for farmers and the sector to mitigate the impact of our activity on the environment. Finally, animal rights movements have been trying to damage the sector’s image , and this is precisely one of the challenges for the future that we must address together. We must explain to society how farms work, the high environmental and animal welfare requirements the sector meets, and the excellent quality of the pork produced in Spain. In business, Rotecna continues to advance hand in hand with the sector, providing livestock farmers with efficient, sustainable and profitable solutions. We continue to be present at the primary sector events. In 2023, we participated in worldwide fairs in Spain, Europe, Asia, Latin America, and the United States... A habit that we will continue to maintain in 2024. In hopes that the new year will be better for everyone, happy holidays. Antonio Pinos, CEO, Rotecna.

Celebrating important national and international events for the pork sector has accompanied the final stretch of 2023, from conferences and congresses on the most current issues to international fairs. As this is what we are known for, at Rotecna, we wanted to be at these events trying to do our bit with our technical knowledge and our solutions in pig equipment.
ADS Alcarràs Conference Alcarràs is one of the municipalities with the highest pig census in Europe and, consequently, one of the most important production centres in the Spanish pork sector. Training and transmitting the necessary knowledge so that farmers in the area can raise their animals efficiently and sustainably is one of the priorities of the ADS of Alcarràs, which on 5 October held a new edition of its Pig Technical Conference. Topics such as regulations that affect farms, technologies that allow real-time animal control, or communication in the pork sector were some topics discussed in a conference in which we collaborated once again. 4
Porc d’Or Awards The 30th edition of the renowned Porc d’Or Awards took place on 27 October at the Llotja in Lleida. On this occasion, Rotecna strengthened its collaboration with the event by becoming one of its premium sponsors. More than 1,000 people attended this event, which awarded up to 43 awards to 37 farms from seven Spanish autonomous communities, with Aragon taking the most awards, 13 in total. Once again, a jury of renowned personalities in the industry, livestock research, and administration was in charge of choosing the winners of these awards. For 30 years, we have recognised the yield, professionalism, effort and extraordinarily essential work of hundreds of companies and pig farms throughout Spain.
Pork Expo Brasil Once again, and it is already 21, the Pork Expo Latam has been the meeting point for many companies and professionals linked to the pork sector in Latin America. The city of Foz do Iguaçu has hosted this event,
in which Rotecna has participated through its distributor in Brazil, providing the most efficient pig equipment solutions for a sector that has managed to position itself as the fourth largest pork producer worldwide and that plays an increasingly important role in the international pork market. Within the framework of the fair, the XI Pig Farming Congress was also held, in which Rotecna was present, trying to provide the necessary knowledge, from a technological point of view, to face the challenges that the pork sector will deal with in the coming years.
333 Experience Congress On November 15 and 16, the La Llotja Conference Centre in Lleida hosted the second edition of the 333 Experience Congress – Facilities and the Environment. Once again, Rotecna participated in the event as one of its sponsors. The event was attended by engineers, veterinarians and other professionals from the pork sector who work directly in designing, constructing and implementing on-farm technologies and addressed issues such as the challenges posed by animal welfare regulations or the best BAT that can be implemented. On this occasion, Oscar Toledano, commercial director of Rotecna, led a session about the new challenges faced by pig farms and the increase in costs in animal farming.
Apogua Congress 2023 The Association of Pig Farmers of Guatemala held the 30th edition of its National Pig Congress from November 15 to November 17 in Antigua, Guatemala. It addressed issues related to food, sustainability, and animal welfare. Once again, Rotecna was present with its distributor in Central America to bring the most efficient solutions in pig equipment there. 5
SOMETHINGABOUT
ESPINELVES FIR FAIR A large number of options can be found for the whole family during the fair.
General view of Espinelves streets during the fair.
At the gates of Christmas, the small village of Espinelves opens its doors to visitors. During the first days of December, this town of just over 200 inhabitants becomes a natural tourist attraction for those who want to find a Christmas tree to decorate their homes.
Origin of the fair The origins of this fair date back to 42 years ago, when a group of young people from the municipality came up with the idea of creating this event to raise funds to do activities for the youngest in the town. Thus, in December 1981, this fair was born, attracting thousands of people yearly. Shortly after, and thanks to the initiative’s success, in 1986, the Municipal Board of the Fir Fair was created, which since then has been in charge of organising the event. The success of the fair, which in each edition has sought to surprise its visitors and offer new 6
proposals, has led it to become the second most important fair in Catalonia regarding the number of visitors, reaching 90,000 in its last edition.
An event for the whole family The great success of the Espinelves Fir Fair in each of its editions is due to the large number of options that can be found for the whole family, from good regional gastronomy to activities for the little ones such as workshops, magic shows, pony rides, as well as a sample of traditional trades. Of course, there is no shortage of spruce stalls with different varieties and sizes. However, Nordmanniana, Excelsa, and Masjoanis are the three most in-demand varieties. Masjoanis is a native fir from Espinelves that was created by grafting between a fir from the Guilleries and an Andalusian fir. It should be noted that the fir trees sold at the fair are explicitly grown for
the occasion and that Catalan forests are not deforested to sell trees at this fair. Another highlight of the fair is the delivery of the Golden Fir Tree. Each year, the fair’s organiser, the Municipal Board of the Fir Fair, awards this distinction to a personality or entity that has stood out in its social work. Personalities such as President Carles Puigdemont and former President of Parliament Carme Forcadell have received this recognition. In short, it is an unmissable event for those who love Christmas, gastronomy and traditions, and an excellent option for those who want to disconnect from the routine hustle and bustle to get to know a charming town surrounded by nature and tranquillity.
Espinelves, a captivating village Espinelves is a Romanesque village located in the region of Osona, in the Girona region. It
is a small village of 200 inhabitants between Montseny and Les Galleries and between the Coll de Ravell and the Coll de Buch. The town is surrounded by forests of holm oaks, oaks, firs and chestnut trees, where you can find a wide variety of mushrooms in autumn. Suppose the visitor takes a walk through the narrow streets of the town. In that case, they will come across the most exciting heritage, the Romanesque church of Sant Vicenç de Espinelves, from the 11th century, with a Romanesque portal inside the same century. To top it off, the municipality is crossed by the Espinelves stream, where people do sport fishing. Finally, on the outskirts is the Masjoan grove, the largest group of monumental trees in Catalonia, some exceeding 40 metres; we can find the tallest fir tree in Catalonia (43 metres) there. The grove’s name comes from the old Masjoan farmhouse from the 12th century.
At the fair there is no shortage of spruce stalls with different varieties and sizes.

HEATED PLATES WITH PROBE
The thermal control of piglets in farrowing is one of the critical factors in managing this phase, especially during the first hours of the offspring’s life, but also in the following days to ensure a low mortality rate and correct development and growth of the animal. On the other hand, beyond a reasonable temperature control in the squares, it is vital to do it efficiently and optimise the heated panels’ energy consumption. To this end, Rotecna has added new models with probes to its range of heated plates that allow more precise temperature regulation and detect whether the plate is occupied, selfregulating the temperature and preventing heat from dissipating into the environment. 8
The probe allows the heating system to selfregulate the temperature, so the energy consumption savings compared to other manual systems range from 9% to 34%, depending on whether or not animals occupy the hob. In addition, it must be taken into account that if, in addition to heated plates, you work with nests, the energy savings can be even more remarkable since, in particular environmental conditions and with animals of a certain age, it may be viable to have the heated plate turned off since the microclimate created by the animals inside the nest is sufficient.
HIGHER EFFICIENCY AND LOWER ENERGY CONSUMPTION
Piglet welfare and comfort Furthermore, the feel of the surface, the temperature distribution and the lightness of the Rotecna heated plates, made of plastic, are other comfort and well-being advantages of this family of products compared to other more porous and heavier materials. In addition, its soft and comfortable surface provides a special non-slip finish. Finally, the use of plastic as a material also provides greater efficiency by preventing heat from dissipating into the environment and maintaining a homogeneous temperature on the surface of the plate so that the piglets do not lose their body heat.
FEATURES: • Dimensions (mm): 1200x400, 1200x500, 1200x600. • Non-slip surface. • There are no nooks and crannies where dirt can accumulate. • Lighter weight, between 3.5 and 9.5 kilos. • Reduction in connections and wiring (4 m of cable).
ADVANTAGES: • Self-regulation of the system depends on whether the board is occupied or not. • Savings of between 9% and 34% in energy consumption. • It evenly distributes the temperature over the surface. • Greater comfort for piglets.

GLOBALPIG J. MANUEL CAJAL: “THE SWING R3 TUBE HELPS US TO GET THE PIGLETS OFF TO AN EXCELLENT START IN FATTENING”
The Pucero farm, located in Alcubierre (Huesca), has a capacity for 4,200 fattening pigs.
Juan Manuel with his father at the Pucero fattening farm. Photo: Rotecna.
In 2017, José Manuel Cajal and his father opted to expand the family business by constructing a new fattening farm, first with 1,900 places, which were soon developed to 4,200. In all of them, they have the Rotecna Swing R3 Tube, a hopper that stands out for the easy adaptation of the animals and the improvement of their conversion rate. When and why did you decide to go into pig farming? When I decided to stay home in the family business, my father saw an opportunity to expand our company. We already had 10
a farm with two fattening houses, so we decided to build a new one with two more houses. Little by little, we grew and consolidated what we already had and decided to make two more warehouses to grow the company. How has this farm grown since its inception? The farm is relatively new, as we started it in 2017. We built two sheds that had a capacity for 1,900 animals. Then, in 2022, we decided to expand again and made two more warehouses, reaching a capacity of 4,200 places.
How is it distributed? The farm consists of four halls, three of which are precisely the same and have a capacity for 1,152 places. The fourth warehouse is somewhat smaller, with a capacity of 799 seats. In all of them, the pens are designed to house around 17 pigs (pens of 3.8 x 3.5 m). How many people work on it? We are three people—a farmer who works with us, my father and I. In fattening, they work with the Swing R3 Tube. Why did you decide on this hopper? We decided on this hopper because, on another farm we have, we installed the Rotecna Grow Feeder. We haven’t had any problems in over 20 years.
This year we have renewed them, after all this time, without having changed a single piece, which shows the quality of their products. For this reason, when we built the first two warehouses of the Pucero farm, we considered different possibilities for Rotecna hoppers. We finally decided on the Swing R3 Tube because its design caught my attention. Being transparent, you can see the volume of feed and what the animals have eaten during the day, and that was what made me decide to go for this hopper in the first place. What benefits would you highlight in terms of its use? Working with the Swing R3 Tube allows us to control feed consumption very well. In addition, when it comes to plucking the piglets when they reach fattening, it helps us to do it very well, especially when they are small. Here, we start with piglets from 6 kilograms, and the truth is that they have adapted spectacularly with this hopper. In addition, the fact that we have a constant level of water in the dish’s side drinkers helps us get the animals off to an excellent start. On the other hand, the handling of the hopper is straightforward. The regulation mechanism is precise and resistant since we have used these hoppers for six years in the first warehouses and have not changed a single part. In short, it’s a simple hopper but very well-designed and works well. Does the Swing R3 allow them to achieve a reasonable conversion rate? Yes. Our conversion ratio is outstanding, and so is the growth of the animals. When the pigs are larger, the hopper allows two animals to eat simultaneously, giving us a suitable feed conversion ratio. We currently have it at 2.25. 11
GLOBALPIG In addition to the Swing R3, what other Rotecna products have you installed? We have the Grow Feeder in the older warehouses. We also have the drop manholes and the feed distribution system. Overall, what do you value about Rotecna? I appreciate that it is a brand that offers outstanding products, is very durable, which is the most important thing, and has a very efficient staff.
Image of the Swing R3 installed on the farm. Photo: Rotecna.
How do animals adapt? When the pigs arrived at these sheds from weaning, we always had to give them some feed from a can on the floor so that they could learn to eat. With the Swing R3 Tube, we have been able to relax because, when the pig reaches fattening, the food in the hopper plate is very accessible. It only has to activate the mechanism to access the feed and eat. The feed drop system is straightforward for the animal, and just by giving the dispenser a little nudge with its nose, the feed goes down without any problem. Therefore, access to feed is effortless and comfortable for the animal, making them adapt very well. Another good thing is that the pens are not usually uneven; the animals are always the same. Is the hopper easy to clean? Regarding cleanliness, it should be noted that the hopper has no corner where dirt can remain when we wash the warehouses. Therefore, it is a hopper that cleans very well and stays as if it were new. 12
In the face of health threats, what biosecurity measures do you adopt on the farm? We have defined dirty and clean zones on this farm. So, whenever someone outside the farm team comes in, they have to shower, change their clothes, and also on the way out. We also have a perimeter fence so no outside animal can enter. On a health level, what are your main concerns? PRRS is doing a lot of damage on farms, especially to sows. This worries us because it means a reduction in the number of piglets and, therefore, in the number of pigs to fatten. Together, we are weathering the storm. On the other hand, we are also concerned about the regulations that the administrations make us comply with, for example, in matters of slurry management, since they represent a substantial investment. What challenges will you face in the future? We recently completed the last extension, so, for now, what we are considering is to consolidate this growth and see where the new regulations I mentioned take us.

FUTURENEWS
HOW IS THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE ASF VACCINE PROGRESSING? The EU VACDIVA project, led by Professor José Manuel Sánchez-Vizcaíno, analyses the different possibilities for testing the vaccine in a controlled, natural habitat.

After a long professional career focused on battling African Swine Fever (ASF), José Manuel Sánchez-Vizcaíno is currently leading the EU VACDIVA project, which aims to develop a safe, effective and DIVA (Differentiating Infected from Vaccinated Animals) vaccine against this virus. After different trials with excellent results in the laboratory, SánchezVizcaíno and his team are now evaluating and analysing the other possibilities to test the vaccine in a controlled, natural habitat. In this interview, he explains the latest advances in vaccine development and the steps that remain before it is commercialised. When are you to start working on the ASF vaccine? I started working with ASF with my doctoral thesis in 1977. So, I was working with Professor Sánchez Botija, who was the one who knew the 14
most about ASF at the time and from whom I learned a lot. He had already tested a vaccine in the 1960s, as did Manso Ribeiro in Portugal, although what was most worrying at that time was controlling the disease, and that is why I focused mainly on its diagnosis and on the development of the ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) which, for the first time, was used for a viral illness. After that, I spent some time away from research, working on the control and eradication of ASF in different epidemiological scenarios and researching possible strategies to improve its management, including a potential vaccine. Along those lines, we started working on the VACDIVA project four years ago, which we presented to the EU for funding. This project aims to find an ASF vaccine and involves a consortium of specialists from different areas. Since we started working, and thanks to advances in
molecular biology, we have made a lot of progress and have identified genes linked to the immune response to this complicated virus. What progress have you made in the last year in developing the vaccine? In this last period, we have made more progress in choosing positive mutants that render good protection, that is, in determining which ones are better to achieve a safe and effective defence against the virus. We have done many trials with different mutants, both in wild boar and in domestic pigs. These tests, which have lasted up to 40-50 days in wild boars, have been carried out at laboratory level, with the limitations that this entails, and with relatively small groups of animals. Still, they have allowed us to check whether there were side effects, their level of protection, to know the immunisation routes, etc. Now, we want to carry out a trial with a more significant number of animals and, above all, for a more extended period and in safe field conditions, that is, in a place where the animals can be in semi-freedom for a long time to guarantee
what we would most like to know, the duration of the immune response induced by the vaccine. How long can vaccinated animals be protected, and during that long period, will any side effects appear, as has already been observed in our laboratory tests? For now, we are looking at the best place to run the trial safely to assess extended periods of 50 days. This trial, which will determine the immunity achieved, the levels of protection, the vaccine’s safety, etc., would be one of the last checks before considering a commercial vaccine. What will this test consist of? We want to endorse in many animals over a long period what we know today at the level of laboratory experimentation. The tests we have carried out in laboratory conditions have been with groups of 12 animals. These trials have been critical, but now we need to be sure of our results and check the evolution of the vaccine in conditions as close as possible to the open domain and to know the general behaviour of the group. Right now, at an experimental level, we have an immune response of around 40-50
In wild boars, vaccination is carried out orally. Photo: Archive.
15
FUTURENEWS days, which is not bad, but we want more. That’s the main goal. The other goal we have is that there are no side effects in vaccinated animals. We insist on doing many tests because I don’t want to live my last professional years feeling like I did something haphazardly. I would like as much information as possible proving it is a safe, effective DIVA vaccine.
“A first trial with many animals would be completed by mid-2024.”
Will the same vaccine also work for domestic pigs? It’s not the same vaccine, as the immunisation pathway will differ. In domestic pigs, vaccination is intramuscular, and in wild boar, it will be oral because it is the best way to vaccinate many animals under natural conditions. In this sense, we believe that oral vaccination is the one that will allow us to make progress in more significant areas where there are problems right now. So, the product, so to speak, could be the same, but neither the dilution nor the concentration nor the route will be. The best and most helpful form of the final presentation of the vaccine will most likely be decided when we have finished the experimental studies we have discussed. When do you expect to have the vaccine ready for marketing? We still need a lot of testing experiments to see that our laboratory data also works under natural conditions. Depending on how that study is carried out, where we can do it, the time of year, etc., we have calculated that a first 16
trial with many animals would be completed by mid-2024. Once we have done this test, we can think about the next step. Once ready, what role do you foresee the vaccine playing in the spread of ASF globally? I think it won’t be used in countries that don’t have the disease. It should not be used because, having antibodies to the virus, they would lose their free status and become free with vaccination. I believe it could be used mainly in countries with problems controlling the disease to carry out particular vaccinations, containment and sanitary barriers, but never in generalised or mass vaccinations. However, as I said, we must test everything well before we can be at that stage. Do you think the Spanish pork sector is protecting itself well from ASF? The Spanish pork sector is one of the most mature that I know of. It is a very professional sector where there are now young people who have the stigma of ASF from previous years. There are also older people, and they know the importance of not having this disease and how difficult it is to fight it. Most of them understand and apply the biosecurity measures that must be in place to prevent these things from happening. I am confident that we will still not have to vaccinate in Spain even though the vaccine exists. I am convinced that if there is a focus here, it can be reduced quickly. The secret to this is early detection. That is to say, if the farms that may suffer from this disease have a focus, they should warn that the detection is rapid because, when this is done, the possibilities we have to control this disease are also speedy and effective. Right now, the best tool we have is biosecurity and early detection.

PIGPRODUCTIONIN BRAZIL, THE WORLD’S FOURTH-LARGEST PORK PRODUCER
In 2022, pork production stood at 5.2 million metric tons.
Brazil has positioned itself as the fourth-largest producer of pork in the world and one of the leading exporters. This has been possible thanks to the constant growth that the Brazilian pork sector has experienced over the last decades with the modernisation of breeding practices, investments in new production systems, and adoption of new technologies on farms. All this has made it possible expand into international markets, and increase the national demand for this food. In addition, the sector has opted to invest in genetic improvements to improve meat quality. All this has meant a significant advance in traceability and quality, allowing Brazilian products to compete more in the global market. 18
Image of a weaning pen in Brazil. Photo: Rotecna.
Production In Brazil, 43 million registered pigs are raised on 30,000 farms, mainly in the south and southeast of the country. These areas account for two-thirds of the country’s total pork production. Most pig farms are integrated into a system that closely links farmers with meat processors, allowing for strict control of quality standards and animal welfare. During 2022, the activity of the Brazilian pork sector was marked by factors such as the significant increase in production costs and price volatility. However, pork production showed
considerable growth. According to data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, in 2022, pork production stood at 5.2 million metric tons. This value represent an increase of 5.2%, compared to the previous year.
Market Despite the slight drop in pork exports in Brazil during 2021, throughout 2022, this activity managed to consolidate. According to USDA data, in the first half of 2023, Brazil exported up to 806,500 tons of pork to 90 countries. Despite the drop in Chinese demand, the Asian giant
remains one of Brazil’s primary customers, as it imported up to 310,900 tonnes of Brazilian pork in the first six months of 2023. Regarding value, other destinations have been Hong Kong, the Philippines, Chile and Singapore. Exports are expected to grow 7% in 2024 thanks to factors such as pork availability and the more significant share of Brazilian pork in international markets. On the other hand, in 2022, imports reached 9,760 tons. Without data for 2023, the USDA forecasts that the figure will remain stable this year and next. France, Italy, Portugal and Spain are central exporting countries to Brazil.
Future USDA forecasts that Brazilian pork production will increase by 5% during 2024. Factors such as increased external demand, access to new markets and improved economic conditions in the country are expected to contribute to consolidating this growth. In this context of growth, the Brazilian pork sector will continue to face significant challenges, such as the threat posed by diseases such as African swine fever, classical swine fever, and PRRS. In this sense, farms must adopt all possible biosecurity and control measures to protect their pig herd and meat exports since international health regulations are becoming stricter.
Consumption Among the different animal proteins, pork remains the third choice among the Brazilian population, beef is the favourite, and chicken occupies the second position. One of the reasons can be found in the price of pork, which is even higher than that of other foods, such as chicken. In addition to this factor, which continues to be one of the main determining factors when buying, there are others, such as the seasonality of the product. In this sense, consumers tend to increase their pork consumption during Christmas. With all this, Brazil’s per capita pork consumption increased dramatically in 2022, contributing to higher apparent consumption. This one reached 4.07 million tonnes (Mt), an increase of 7.3% compared to 2021 (3.79 Mt), while per capita consumption was estimated at 19.5 kg/capita. To promote consumption and continue to grow, the Brazilian pork industry has intensified its efforts in recent years with market campaigns focused on encouraging pork consumption among the population.
In addition, environmental sustainability poses another challenge, as increasing pork production can significantly impact the environment if not managed properly. For this reason, Brazilian farms are already working on sustainable practices that allow livestock waste management and reduce emissions, although there is still a long way to go.
Pork production will increase by 5% during 2024. Photo: Rotecna.
