Voorwoord Foreword

Rotterdam has experienced many media highpoints in recent years. They include the opening of large architectural icons such as the Markthal, international blockbuster exhibitions at the city’s museums, for instance the Peter Lindbergh exhibition at the Kunsthal Rotterdam, and innovative interventions in the city, including De Trap (The Stairs) at the Groothandelsgebouw and the Floating Forest in the Rijnhaven. All of these developments put Rotterdam in the spotlights internationally. They generated distinctive, innovative and appealing news at a global level. The bigger story of Rotterdam – a city in transformation that is making itself future-proof (the climate change adaptation strategy, the densification strategy, the transformation of disused port areas) – is an attractive story for international media. These news events and story lines give Rotterdam Partners triggers for arousing international journalists’ interest in the city. 2017 can actually be considered a quiet year in this respect. While plenty of things obviously happened in the city over the past year, there were fewer internationally distinctive and interesting news items that immediately captured the interest of journalists. So the media attention for Rotterdam was somewhat less momentous this year. But Rotterdam Partners can nonetheless deem 2017 a success with a reach of around a billion potential readers and publications in major international and national quality media such as the Financial Times, The New York Times, Dutch National Broadcasting Company NOS and Dutch financial newspaper Financieele Dagblad. This is in large part because the press team is able to continue to build on all the media efforts of recent years and now has access to a large press network in the Netherlands and abroad. There was a strong focus on innovation, with ample space for the city’s smaller pearls – which are often relatively undiscovered treasures – that are precisely what make Rotterdam so extraordinary. Initiatives such as the Kunstblock, the Roffa Mon Amour film festival and the Wikkelboat (cardboard-wrapped boat) are prime examples. Journalists are also matched with designers and architectural firms including Studio Roosegaarde, SoberCollective, Ramon Knoester, DoepelStrijkers and MVRDV that are standardbearers for Rotterdam as a creative city where designers are given the space to shape their ideas and join in thinking about the city’s future. The rise of street art was leveraged as a means of showing how much art Rotterdam has in its public spaces. The trick in a quieter media year is to give journalists a sneak preview of what the future holds for Rotterdam. This is why press receptions were seized as an opportunity to look to the future and to plant new seeds of interest among journalists. The upcoming arrival of the Floating Farm and the Recycled Park in 2018 was sufficiently newsworthy last year to highlight Rotterdam as a forerunner in the field of Floating Construction. Another example is the start of the construction of the Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen, which will open to the public in 2020. Architecture and art journalists were taken on a tour of the construction site last year to get them involved in the story at an early stage. The fact that 2017 continued the succession of exceptional media years is also thanks to the close collaboration with the press officers at NBTC Holland Marketing’s different international locations. And it is above all thanks to the cooperation with the people of Rotterdam:

the hotel owners, the chefs, the entrepreneurs, the architects, the designers, the residents, the museum curators and all the other people who always go the extra mile to receive our journalists, welcome them to the city and tell them real Rotterdam stories. The return on all these efforts is reflected in this 2017 media coverage, a selection of all the international articles in which Rotterdam Partners was directly or indirectly involved last year. We have not included all the articles published in the Netherlands because you have probably already seen them over the past year. In closing I would like to thank you for the outstanding collaboration. I hope you will enjoy reading this 2017 media coverage.
Vriendelijke groet, Jeroen Kuyper directeur Rotterdam Partners
Kind regards, Jeroen Kuyper Managing Director of Rotterdam Partners
