The past can help the future

I

hope you will enjoy the latest part of our series of interviews with recently retired Stagecoach West Managing Director Ian Manning. As you will read on p18, this instalment includes his reminiscences of working at the former Stagecoach Portugal. Please don’t gloss over it because it’s ‘foreign’ – for it contains a number of experiences which I’m sure will be of interest to you all. If like me, you’re fortunate to know Ian, you will instantly recognise that it contains a number of ‘Ian-isms’ – which certainly gave my colleagues and I a chuckle or two. I feel it’s a fascinating read. Personally, I enjoy reading and indeed, learning from the experiences of respected industry figures. I feel it’s a subject which has appeal right across our readership. Also in this issue, I trust you will find our photo-based feature on the Commonwealth Games of interest (p38). It’s been something of a Scottish bus festival, with vehicles sourced from as far

away as London and Reading. The Commonwealth feature purposefully staggers our popular ‘Big Picture,’ which this week, in a break from the norm, does not actually focus on the exterior of a coach or bus but on a group of drivers from National Express West Midlands, who, like many others, travelled to Glasgow to show our industry in a positive light, when eyes from across the world are on it. Interestingly, some of the buses engaged on Commonwealth Games duties have been stabled at the Glasgow Vintage Vehicle Trust’s Bridgeton bus depot. Like the Ian Manning interview, it’s a reminder of how close our industry is connected with the past – and how it’s relevant to the present and future. Gareth Evans Editor

NEWS B R I E F LY ● THE WELSH GOVERNMENT has announced measures to improve traffic flow on a section of the M4 in Neath Port Talbot which is prone to gridlock. Junction 41 (Port Talbot town centre) of the westbound motorway will shut during peak hours between 0700 – 0900hrs and 1600 – 1800hrs on weekdays for an eight-month experiment aimed at reducing congestion. Access to the town centre from the motorway will be maintained via the eastbound off-slip, which will remain open. New average speed cameras are also being installed within the 50mph zone on the westbound side of the motorway around Port Talbot. A Welsh Government spokesperson explained: “The fixed speed camera near between junctions 41 and 42 of the M4 westbound was removed in 2006 as it was considered to be causing unstable traffic flow which could have contributed to minor collisions. The installation of new average speed cameras in the area are part of a wider package of measures to improve traffic flow. This includes the trial junction closures but the two measures are not directly linked.” ● RON MORGAN, a popular West Midlands bus preservationist and enthusiast passed away on Thursday (July 28) evening, aged just 55. As this issue went to press, funeral details remained to be confirmed.

NX upbeat about half-year results Revenue growth in both UK Coach and UK Rail and debt cut National Express Group (NEG) has reported ‘positive progress’ in the irst half of 2014. Up until June 30, the irm said it enjoyed ‘excellent cash generation,’ amounting to £80m of free cash low, with a full year target of £150m. Net debt reduced by £80m over the last 12 months. It saw underlying growth in both revenue and passenger numbers, in the UK, North America and

1%. Adjusting for these one-off impacts and Sterling’s strength, normalised proit before tax would have increased by £3.8m. Dean Finch, National Express Group Chief Executive, said: “We have made important progress in the irst half of the year. Our success in retaining the Essex Thameside rail franchise conirms our long-term future in UK rail. Other major contract successes across the Group demonstrate the quality of our services and strength of our reputation in the markets we serve. Our strong cash generation remains a highlight and a particular focus of the business this year. “We made clear in our previous statement that extreme weather and industrial action in the US and

Morocco – and the dividend increased 3% to 3.35 pence per share. The previously disclosed one-off impacts of extreme US weather and Spanish industrial action, combined with the strength of Sterling have impacted both revenue and proit. Underlying Group revenue was up 2%, while UK Coach was up 7%; UK Rail grew 6%; and UK Bus commercial revenue rose 3.2%. North America also saw 1% revenue growth, while Spain declined by

Transport for London (TfL) has conirmed that trials of detection software to enhance bus driver awareness of pedestrians and cyclists, will start later this month. It is trialling two systems – ‘CycleEye’ from Fusion Processing Limited and ‘Cycle Safety Shield’ from Safety Shield Systems Limited. The former was trialled by First in Bristol earlier this year. Four buses, two on Tower Transit-run route 25 (Oxford Street – Ilford, via Mile End) and two on Arriva London-operated route 73 (Victoria – Stoke Newington), will be itted with the software as part of a six-week trial. TfL said both routes have been selected because of the high number of pedestrians and cyclists which use the respective lines of route.

Spain respectively would affect our half year results. We remain determined to deliver the improvements and efficiencies necessary over the course of the year to achieve the Board’s expectations. “We also have a strong pipeline of further opportunities with many bids being evaluated at present, including ScotRail and a number in German rail. We have been selected as the preferred bidder for a bus contract in Bahrain, potentially opening a new and exciting market. We are also actively monitoring the situation in Portugal and Spain where the Group is well placed to deploy its expertise when liberalisation of these markets occurs.”

Go-Ahead orders flywheels

The Adidas advertising campaign on New Routemasters in London has entered a new phase with the introduction of this striking scheme which has started to appear on Stagecoach London buses operating on route 8 (Bow – Tottenham). This bus photographed by David Bell was leaving Bow garage. Apparently a pair of Predator Instinct boots can cost up to £170.

First electric buses for Manchester arrive Greater Manchester’s first fully electric buses have been delivered to Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) for use on the free hop-on hop-off Metroshuttle service. The three new Optare Versas have been jointly funded through the Department for Transport’s Green Bus Fund. They join a 17-strong fleet of hybrid-electric buses which already run on all three Metroshuttle routes. The Versas were due to enter service this week on the orange Metroshuttle 1 route, which links Piccadilly station with many of the shopping, commercial, leisure and cultural areas of the city centre. Cllr Mark Aldred, Deputy Chairman of the TfGM Committee, said: “Metroshuttle is the largest free city centre bus service in the UK and carries millions of

Vicky Tomlinson, Operations Manager for First, Howard Hartley, Head of Bus for TfGM, and Cllr Mark Aldred, Deputy Chairman of the TfGM Committee passengers every year, helping to cut congestion. “These new electric buses are

cheaper to run and quieter than normal buses and give off no harmful emissions – contributing to a better environment for everyone who lives in, works in and visits the city centre. “The buses are a welcome addition to our fleet of green buses – and just part of Greater Manchester’s hard work to radically slash its carbon emissions by around one million tonnes every year.” Vicky Tomlinson, Operations Manager for First Manchester, said: “We’re looking forward to welcoming Metroshuttle passengers on board the new electric buses. They are a first for us and our drivers are enjoying taking them out on test runs to get used to the buses before they start running with passengers.”

Go-Ahead Group has ordered 500 Gyrodrive systems from GKN Hybrid Power. The agreement covers the supply of the complete system including a GKN hybrid power flywheel, EVO electric motor, a GKN designed and manufactured gearbox, and installation. The technology is designed to last the life of the bus. Initial instillations will be in buses operating in London and Oxford. The high speed flywheel is made from carbon fibre and stores the energy generated by the bus as it slows down to stop. That energy is then used to power the electric motor which helps accelerate the bus back up to speed, generating fuel savings of more than 20% at a significantly lower cost than battery hybrid alternatives. Go-Ahead Chief Executive David Brown said: “Our collaboration with GKN has been a most constructive one. We have a strong record in continually reducing our carbon emissions and flywheel technology will help us make buses an even more environmentally responsive choice and encourage more people to travel by public transport. The flywheel technology helps us to reduce our fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.”

says pteg. However, the way in which bus services are funded is mired in complexity with no oversight within Whitehall of how the various funding streams from different departments impact on bus services overall. The report says that: “The cumulative impact of public spending cuts on the six main funding sources for bus means that, by 2014/15, overall funding for bus networks outside London will be around £500m lower than if 2010/11 funding levels had increased in line with inlation and the cost of concessionary reimbursement.” It calls for buses to be funded through a new Connectivity Fund that would absorb existing BSOG funding, plus a further £0.5bn to relect the cross departmental beneits of supporting services and the sum lost outside London since 2010.

Bova Futura. Castleways was founded by Trevor Fogarty and his wife June, John and Rowena’s parents who took over the Gillett business in Winchcombe, which then operated ive vehicles. The irm was well known for the smart turn out of its vehicles. Coaches wore a Washington blue livery that was so dark many assumed that it was black. Supermarket chain, Budgens has submitted plans to build on the Castleways depot site.

“The bus is one of the biggest bargains available to transport policy makers in achieving a very broad range of transport, economic, environmental and social objectives in a cost effective way and in a timely fashion,” concludes the report. “Public funding for bus services reduces congestion for all road users, gets the workless into work, gets young people into education and training, and gets older and disabled people out of isolation. “The long-term costs to budgets across Whitehall of a declining bus network are far greater than ensuring a funding system for bus services that works. At present the way in which buses are funded is mired in complexity, fails to relect the cross sector beneits that bus services provide, has no central oversight and is in decline.”

Buyer found for Black Velvet Travel

Adam Smith, who has many years of experience in the bus industry, has completed a deal to take over Black Velvet Travel. The announcement came two weeks after he stepped in to run services on an interim basis after seeing news of the Eastleigh-based independent bus irm ceasing operation after running into inancial dificulty. Under the new ownership, the Black Velvet Travel name will remain in place and will continue to operate routes A, S1, S2, B4, M and 503. The sale has been arranged by specialists from accountancy irm Chantrey Vellacott. Terry Evans, restructuring specialist at Chantrey Vellacott, said the deal has secured the long-term future of bus services across the community and is in the best interests of creditors and stakeholders. “We’re delighted a deal has been completed – safeguarding the longterm future of Velvet buses, its bus services in the community, along with jobs,” he said. www.coachandbusweek.com

Express arrests Xelabus receives 2011/12 -registered Scanias to upgrade leet Gwynedd Council says it has put in place a contingency plan in the event the fraud investigation impacts on public transport services. Five people, all involved in running Penygroes-based Express Motors have been released on bail after being arrested on suspicion of fraud. Four men and a woman were arrested early on Thursday morning as the result of a complaint from Council. CBW understands items were seized by police, including mobile phones and computers – although its network of local bus services are running normally. Detective Inspector Steve Williams of North Wales Police said the ive were arrested in connection with a fraud investigation. He told the Daily Post: “The ive, aged between 40 and early 70s, were questioned in connection with the matter. They have been released on police bail pending further inquiries.”

Eastleigh, Hampshire-based operator Xelabus has taken delivery of four Scania CK230UB 4x2 OmniLinks. The 2011/12 registered vehicles have been supplied by Scania (Great Britain). The vehicles will be used on existing routes across Eastleigh and one to a new Business Park Service recently awarded by Hampshire County Council. Gareth Blair, Operations Director of Xelabus, said: “The addition of the four Scania’s is a milestone moment for the company since it formed in 2010. “The buses are superb and we are delighted to be welcoming them to our business. It is planned that the Scanias will see older vehicles now leave the leet. “The sales and support team from Scania (Great Britain) made our choice of purchasing these vehicles a lot easier.”

Bob Winfield, Scania Finance, Gareth Blair, Operations Director of Xelabus and Steve Lambert, General Manager of Used Vehicles at Scania GB Steve Lambert, General Manager of used vehicles at Scania (Great Britain) added: “It has been a real pleasure working with Gareth and his team at Xelabus. I am sure these vehicles will have major impact in the area.”

Leicester 90th anniversary celebration First Leicester, with the help of the Leicester Transport Heritage Trust, has marked the 90th anniversary of the irst motorbus service in Leicester. Municipal buses were introduced between the city centre and St Philip’s Church on Evington Road on July 24, 1924 using six Bruch-bodied Tilling-

Stevens with solid types. The Lord Mayor of Leicester, Cllr John Thomas as well as invited guests boarded four buses at Leicester’s town hall to go to a reception at the racecourse where they were welcomed by First Midlands Managing Director Nigel Eggleton. The Lord Mayor gave

an entertaining account of his early memories of travelling by bus while Heritage Trust Director Mike Greenwood delivered a short presentation covering highlights over the last 90 years. Two of the First Leicester buses used had been painted in traditional Leicester liveries.

B R I E F LY ● LONDON MAYOR Boris Johnson has distanced himself from wording in his newly published ‘London Infrastructure Plan 2050: Transport Supporting Paper that suggests that large cost savings could be achieved by replacing driver-operated buses with driverless vehicles. According to the Guardian, the document said that driverless technology of the type being developed by Google would provide “large cost sayings for buses while delivering a faster more efficient service.” A spokesman for the mayor told the newspaper: “There are no plans for automated buses.” Any reference to “autonomous vehicles” in the report “should be seen in the context of automation on the tube.” ● OPTARE has launched a new website, which is compatible with mobile, tablet or PCs. Enrico Vassllo, CEO, said: “It will allow us to more effectively communicate our product offerings to potential customers in both the UK and abroad, as well as keeping our existing customers and investors up to date with the latest developments.” Visit www. optare.com. ● PRENTICE COACHES of Haddington is to withdraw its commercially-operated X1 service between Haddington and Wallyford because of low patronage. “Unfortunately, despite hundreds of people saying in a survey they would use it, it just never got the numbers to justify continuing to run it,” Proprietor Ross Prentice told CBW. ● BRIGADE ELECTRONICS, has continued its partnership with road safety charity Brake for the seventh year in a row. The supplier said it has been pioneering the cause of reversing safety since 1976.

NEWS › COACH RO A D WATC H n THE HIGHWAYS AGENCY is to start work this week on replacing the existing metal barrier with a stronger and safer concrete barrier in the central reservation of the M1 between Junction 19 Catthorpe Interchange (A14/M6) and Junction 16 for the A4500 to Northampton. The work is taking place as part of plans to convert this section into a smart motorway. Completion of the barrier is expected in summer 2015. While the work is underway, to minimise disruption, three lanes of traffic will be kept open in each direction during peak times. To protect road workers, some off-peak and overnight lane closures will be necessary. n RESTRICTIONS will be in place on the A9 between Kincraig and Dalraddy over the next two months to enable ground investigations to be carried out on the carriageway. It marks the latest step forward in dualling the artery between Perth and Inverness. Work will take place between 0800 and 1800hrs, Monday to Thursday only of each week to avoid Fridays, which generally experience higher levels of traffic. n THE FIRST PART of improving two junctions on the M27 near Southampton gets underway this week. The approaches to Junction 5’s eastbound exit slip road and Stoneham Lane will be widened and a segregated slip road added from the A335 onto the eastbound entry slip road.

Alpine buys Silver Star Coach holiday acquisition adds new element to respected Llandudno-based operator

Caernarfon-based Silver Star Holidays has joined the Alpine Travel Group fold – a deal which was completed on Friday (August 1). Explaining the acquisition, Alpine’s Chris Owens told CBW: “Apart from open-top tours, vintage coach tours and a very small North Wales excursion programme, Alpine has been very much a business to business operation. It’s always been our desire to offer our own coach tour products. “However, the market is saturated. All North Wales operators do an excellent job and are well established, with strong brands and loyal customer bases. Therefore, it would have been a folly to add another company into the mix, so when the opportunity to arose to acquire part of Silver Star, we took it. “Craig Porteous bought Silver Star out of the ashes in 2011. Supported by excellent local staff, including the management team, he has moved the business forward – but he lives in Hull, so it’s difficult. We’ve been able to capitalise on that success, as coaches have been hired in from Alpine. “The coach tourism market is improving and recovering from recession. Alpine Travel has a good name and superb operating

experience – along with great support staff, vehicles and tour drivers. Therefore, it’s a natural progression.” Chris added: “As a company, we’re thrilled to welcome on board members of the Silver Star family – all staff have moved across. “I’m also delighted to announce that Ian Thomas, who was Group Holidays Manager at Voel Holidays, has recently joined us. He will be working alongside Gavin Owen, Silver Star’s General Manager to further boost the management team and develop new products. Chris was keen to stress: “The future for Silver Star is very much built on quality and diversity of the product – not price. In my opinion, there is already a multitude of budget tour operators in the market and it’s not our intention to increase the customer base on price alone. “Alpine’s philosophy has always been on quality and value for money, rather than just price alone. I’ve spoken to local operators and have made it clear we all have a duty to promote coach tourism. We need to compete against the private car, aircraft and national budget coach operators, rather than our neighbours.” Silver Star North Wales Ltd, as the firm is called, is an owned subsidiary of Alpine Travel Group. Craig remains a shareholder in the

business. Bonded through Bonded Coach Holidays, the firm is a holiday sales company – it doesn’t operate any coaches of its own. Vehicle provision will be through

Sunfun Group launches Cambridgecoaches.com

Sunfun Group has launched its new CambridgeCoaches.com operation with the delivery of two 12.8m Plaxton Leopards. The choice of Plaxton’s latest model, based on the Volvo B9R platform, is part of Managing Director Dave Collier’s strategy for the new operation. “People recognise Sunfun as a holiday brand, although we undertake all types of work,” he explained. “We wanted to focus our private hire operation under a brand representing our locality and employing the latest design of vehicle. We require high capacity with comfort and reliability for the operation so the Volvo Plaxton Leopard fits our requirements perfectly. The initial reaction to them has been very good and we have just ordered another three to expand the operation later this year.” Sunfun Group is a family business founded by Dave Collier in 1987 with one vehicle focussed on

Private hire requires comfort with reliability holiday tours. Growth in this area driven strongly by US airbases in the locality was followed by diversification into private hire and sleeper coaches together with the acquisition of the Kiddles Coaches business which brought in a significant portfolio of school contract work. The Kiddles brand has been retained by Sunfun Group, ,alongside Sunfun International and the new CambridgeCoaches.com. The Leopards are the first new Plaxton coaches to be acquired and join a fleet of around 50 vehicles.

Three Plaxton-bodied Volvos are to be dedicated to Silver Star Holidays work Alpine Travel and its extensive network of trusted partner operators. On that note, Chris said: “By the end of next week, there will be three Plaxton-bodied Volvos in Silver Star livery. Our designers have tried to make the scheme mimic the Alpine livery. I feel it’s important to lend value and maintain the family branding.” The vehicles dedicated to Silver Star will be based at the firm’s operating centre on the Cibyn industrial estate on the edge of Caernarfon.

Chris was also keen to stress: “This deal does not impact in the slightest on our relationship with Jones Holidays of Flint, which we at Alpine will continue to supply with its own dedicated coaches and drivers. Jones is focused on North East Wales, a very different market to that in North West Wales, in which Silver Star operates.” Ever true to its Welsh cultural roots, Silver Star has been exhibiting at the National Eisteddfod in Llanelli which takes place this week.

NEWS › REGIONAL SOUTH EAST ARRIVA SOUTHERN COUNTIES has made changes to its child fares during the school summer holidays. The offers apply throughout the month of August and vary across three of the company’s operating areas. Rules relating to the ‘Kids Go Cheap’ fares in Kent and East Sussex will be relaxed. The flat 60p single and £1 return fare which is available when up to two children are accompanied by two farepaying adults has changed, so that they only need to travel with one adult. In addition, the South East Day Saver ticket which allows unlimited travel on most Arriva buses in Kent and East Sussex has been reduced by 20% to £4. Similar concessions apply in the Surrey and West Sussex area, with the child-rate day ticket covering all services in those counties benefiting from a 25% reduction of its normal price of £4, down to £3. In Essex, there are two offers on Arriva’s network of services that run out of its Southend-onSea depot covering the Rayleigh, Rochford, Castle Point and Basildon area. Off-peak child fares that normally apply after 0900hrs on Mondays to Fridays are now available all day, and the Southend Child Day Saver ticket is reduced from £2.60 to £2. Arriva’s Regional Publicity Manager, Richard Lewis, said: “We are pleased to make some changes

to our fares conditions for our customers under the age of 16 to help reduce the cost of travelling on our buses during August. “The ‘Kids Go Cheap’ fares are popular with families wanting a good-value trip by bus and by needing to be accompanied by just one adult during August we hope this will enable more people to take advantage of the cheap fares. “Our network-based day tickets offer great value for money and, with the substantial price reductions during August, we hope that more children will be

encouraged to get out and about during the long school holiday. “The new Arriva app will be an ideal tool to help them get around, showing exactly when the next bus will reach the stop and will add a bit of fun for our younger customers when they are on the move. It can be downloaded onto iPhones, Android phones and iPads.”

MD of Stagecoach Manchester said: “Stagecoach Manchester is investing significantly in this venture, which represents a long term commitment to the public transport provision in Greater

the Black Country. Stations at Stourbridge, Merry Hill, Dudley and Halesowen – and six others across the West Midlands – have been fitted with automated external defibrillators, bought from the British Heart Foundation. The devices have been installed after a passenger who suffered a cardiac arrest at Wolverhampton Bus Station was saved with a defibrillator from the nearby railway station. The West Midlands Ambulance Service has also trained bus staff in basic first aid, CPR and how to use the devices – as well as donating one further defibrillator to the project. Andy Jeynes, the service’s Community Response Manager, said: “With the number of people that pass through bus stations each day, it makes perfect sense to have defibrillators on hand in case someone suffers a cardiac arrest. The quicker we can start CPR the better the chances of survival.” Dave Hadley, Centro Health and Safety Manager, added: “We hope of course that they will never need to be used, but it should be reassuring to both our own employees and the travelling public to know that if there is a need we have the equipment and the skills available to help. “This availability is a welcome addition to the first aid service we already provide at our bus stations, an excellent example of us giving something back to the community we serve.”

easier for commuters.” Cllr Andrew Fender, Chairman of Transport for Greater Manchester, added: “Stagecoach Manchester should be commended for its dedication to this project, which will absolutely improve transport links in the area. “We’re happy to see that as well as a large bike storage facility, the site will be served by hybrid electric buses, to lessen the environmental impact of the journeys and deliver a more sustainable service.” Stockport’s Mayor, Cllr Kevin Hogg, added: “I’m especially pleased that Stagecoach Manchester has considered the views of local people when planning this site and am excited to see how this patch of waste land will be transformed over the coming months.”

DUE TO BUDGET constraints, Nottinghamshire County Council has cut its subsidy to the Trent Barton 141 service – which runs between Sutton and Nottingham, the Hucknall Dispatch reported. The last bus on the route previously left Mansfield at 2200hrs, arriving at Nottingham at 2320hrs, but since August 4 the last service has left Sutton at 1725hrs, arriving in Nottingham at 1924hrs. The final service from Nottingham leaves at 1830hrs through to Sutton with a further bus at 1930hrs which goes as far as Rainworth, arriving at 2033hrs. The council spends around £6m a year on bus services, but plans to reduce this figure by £1.8m as part of cuts totalling £83m. County council spokesman Chris Ward said: “In reorganising services we have done the best we can to serve the majority of people and indeed have retained the majority of the existing services, in particular around rural villages who depend entirely on councilsupported services.”

NEW ADVENTURE TRAVEL is to take over the Cardiff Airport shuttle service launched a year ago, the BBC reported. It takes over the T9 service on August 17, after First Cymru said it would stop running it. The service, which has so far averaged fewer than four passengers per journey, runs every 20 minutes in the summer and every 30 in the winter. The service runs to the airport from Cardiff Bay via the city centre, Culverhouse Cross and Barry. New Adventure Travel Managing Director Kevyn Jones said: “We look forward to working with the Welsh government to make it a very successful service.” Lis Burnett of Vale of Glamorgan Council said: “Having the infrastructure in place, such as the express service and the Rhoose railway station shuttle bus, will encourage more airlines to invest and help the airport to grow. “This can only be a good thing for the Vale of Glamorgan and Wales.”

FOLLOWING WEEKS of testing with bus users in Bristol, First has

launched a smartcard programme. For now, the ‘Touch Card’ is only available for adults using FirstWeek or FirstMonth inner or outer zone tickets in Bristol. This will be expanded to include other passenger groups, such as children and students, by the end of October. Functionality will also increase over time. Once a person has a card, they can choose to load up to three FirstWeek or two FirstMonth bus tickets onto it. This process can either be done at a Travel Shop in Bristol or Bath, or on the bus, direct with the driver. The tickets can then be activated when the customer wishes them to start, offering either seven consecutive days, or 31 consecutive days’ worth of travel from that point onwards. When the ticket expires the customer has the option to top up the card, or activate another ticket (if there is another pre-loaded onto the card). First is working on a process which will allow customers to top up their cards online. This development will be tested from October and is expected to be live by the end of the year. Once the roll out is completed in Bristol, Touch Card will be expanded to include other parts of the West of England, such as Bath, Wells and Westonsuper-Mare. Work is also underway to deliver multi-operator tickets on Touch Card, in partnership with the West of England Bus Operators Association and the local authorities. Paul Matthews, Managing Director for First West of England, said: “There has long been an appetite for smartcards in Bristol and we have been keen to deliver them as quickly as possible. It is fair to say we have encountered some hiccups along the way which have, frustratingly for everyone, delayed the roll out of the technology. However, we are pleased to say that we are now getting there. “We’ve been testing Touch Cards with a small group of users for some months, and in June we started making the cards available to all customers via our Travel Shops in Bristol and Bath. Today though the Touch Card gets its first formal launch. “This is phase one of our delivery schedule though: more developments are planned in the coming months and the functionality of the cards will grow and grow. As this happens we will make further announcements.”

Berlin BVG to test Scania Citywide double-decker in December Year-long trial to start in December of a Euro 6 model with a host of features which will debut in the German capital GERMANY Berlin Transport Authority (BVG) has ordered a two-axle Scania Citywide lowloor double-decker bus for a year-long trial. The Euro 6-compliant vehicle will boast a number of ‘extras’ which will make their debut in the Berlin bus network. These include a glass roof in the front of the upper deck and a staircase in the direction of travel, which Scania and BVG feel will improve the low of passengers. Other features will include USB ports on each row of seats, LED lighting on the steps and on the side walls of the staircase – in addition to an electronic display which will keep passengers informed of available seats in

the upper deck. BVG said it also intends to trial other vehicle makes but has yet to reveal what these will be. BVG has chosen an 11-metre variant, which will be able to accommodate up to 89 passengers. This is now expected to enter service in December 2014. Türk Wundt, Key Account Manager city and intercity buses from Scania Germany, said: “We are very pleased that we can provide the Scania Citywide with a new interior concept for BVG. With a precise analysis of our customers’ needs, we can design bespoke vehicle solutions, meaning the potential passenger lows can be optimised. Explaining the reasoning behind the trial, Martin Koller, Head of Bus at BVG said: “Doubledecker buses are a trademark for Berlin and BVG. We are now going to test different models to

meet the diverse demands of the growing city and provide us with the tailor-made public transport services we need to offer. We want to capture and examine passenger movements in everyday service. These trials will help shape our future purchasing decisions. We are very excited about the test bus and look forward to seeing it in service.” Unlike other cities in both Germany and mainland continental Europe, which prefer artics, Berlin operates double-deckers. BVG runs a standardised leet and replaces the double-deckers in bulk. The current frontline leet is made up of MAN Lion’s City, the model being developed to meet the German capital’s requirements. As a result, if the Scania trial proves successful, it will prove a signiicant milestone for the Swedish manufacturer in Germany.

One bus a month ablaze in Victoria

AUSTRALIA An average of one bus a month catches ire in Victoria, according to the latest statistics. With that in mind, government regulator, Transport Safety Victoria (TSV) is reminding bus operators to ensure they are equipped to deal with the risk of ire. The latest TSV incident statistics show there were 24 instances of ires on buses across the state between July 1, 2012 and June 30, 2014. In a recent incident in April 2014, the ire occurred in the engine compartment, caused by the main electrical cable which was connected to the air-conditioning control panel. TSV Director of Bus Safety Stephen Turner believes taking simple preventive measures is the best way to reduce the risk of bus ires. “Faulty or insecure electrical wiring is a common factor in bus ires. However, this is easily preventable,” he told Australasia Bus & Coach magazine. “It is important that operators have electrical wiring in their buses inspected. This includes ensuring wiring looms are routed and secured appropriately to prevent chaing on sharp edges.” Turner also said having an emergency plan, including access to a working ire extinguisher, will help bus drivers to deal with a ire situation should it arise. “Every commercial bus operator should develop and maintain a First Response Emergency Plan which provides their drivers with relevant contact numbers and emergency instructions. Having access to a ire extinguisher which is in working order should be a critical part of the plan.” He said through TSV’s compliance operations, the regulator is seeing too many operators who don’t test their ire extinguisher within the required timeframe.

DB Regio Bus orders 815 buses from MAN Truck and Bus GERMANY DB Regio Bus, Germany’s largest bus operator, has signed a framework agreement for the supply of up to 815 local and regional buses from MAN Truck & Bus. It comprises up to 435 city and intercity buses worth around €100m in 2015 and 2016. For

2017 and 2018, DB Regio Bus has an option for a further 380 vehicles worth around €90m. Models will be include Lion’s City, Lion’s City Ü and Lion’s City G/GÜ types in various vehicle lengths and in lowloor versions. All vehicles will be equipped with Euro 6 engines. The buses will also feature topography-

dependent gearbox control, which MAN said further reduces fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. This system automatically activates the most eficient gearshift programme, depending on whether it is on an uphill or downhill stretch.

500th Solaris for Czech Republic operator CZECH REPUBLIC The 500th Solaris bus for a customer in the Czech Republic, one of 36 Urbino 18 artics for Brno city operator Dopravní podnik města Brna, has been delivered. “The Czech Republic was the first foreign market entered by Solaris,” said Dariusz Michalak, Solaris Deputy CEO. “In the year 2000, we delivered a Solaris Urbino 15 to the city of Ostrava. It was a milestone for our company.” He added: “The delivery of the 500th Solaris bus is a great success for us. It shows the efficiency, reliability and quality

we offer. “At the same time it is a motivation to continuously reach for new goals.” In 2001, Solaris established its subsidiary Solaris Czech in Ostrava, which is responsible for sales and after-sales activities on this market as well as delivering spare parts. The 500th Solaris low-floor bus on the Czech market is equipped with a 231 kW diesel engine and a Voith DIWA 5 gear box. Solaris buses have previously been delivered to Ostrava, Pardubice, Pilsen, Prague and Teplice, among other cities.

AUSTRALIA Parkeon is playing a key role in a multi-million dollar public transport project in Perth that will provide real-time journey tracking for passengers along with Australia’s first underground dynamic bus stand allocation system. The Real Time Tracking System (RTTS) is being delivered by Parkeon as part of its latest ticketing platform, and will enable commuters to access bus journey information in real-time, via smartphone, tablet or PC. The contract will see Parkeon’s latest generation driver console,

RETROSPECTIVE › IAN MANNING: STAGECOACH PORTUGAL

An Englishman abroad In the second of three articles where Ian Manning, retired Managing Director of Stagecoach West, looks back on his long career, he talks to Andy Izatt about his time running Stagecoach Portugal

odoviária Nacional (RN), the Portuguese equivalent of the National Bus Company, was privatised between 1992 and 1995. Common to all the privatisations was a shareholding to a greater or lesser extent from the Barraqueiro Group through its owner Humberto Pedrosa. Around 30% of the enlarged share capital of the Group at the time was held by French-owned Companie Générale des Eaux through its subsidiary Compagnie Générale d’Entreprises Automobiles. RN subsidiary Rodoviária de Lisboa was sold in May 1995 to Inotrange, a consortium of operators led by the Barraqueiro with support from the Caixa Geral de Depósitos, which then immediately sold the Cascais/Sintra operations west of Lisbon to Stagecoach Holdings and Montague Private Equity. The remaining Queluz de Baixo/Amadora/Cacém part of the business went to Brazilian-owned VIMECA Transportes which later bought the Stagecoach operation in June 2001. Stagecoach Portugal employed 320 staff operating some 150 buses on around 70 route concessions. Also included in the sale was the Sintra Tramway and a dozen tramcars that by then were almost 100 years old. Ian Manning was Managing Director of Stagecoach Portugal from July 1996 to March 2001. He takes up the story.

Deciding to go abroad

“I had been Deputy County Passenger Transport Oficer at Buckinghamshire (Bucks) County Council for six years,” recalled Ian. “An industry friend had reminded (Sir) Brian Souter that I was a Portuguese speaker and in best tradition I met him by the Tie Rack at Heathrow Airport at some ungodly hour in the morning after he’d 18 | COACH & BUS WEEK | August 6, 2014 018_022_CBW1149_Ian Manning.indd 18

lown down on a shuttle. “Brian offered me some consultancy work in Portugal which I had to turn down because I was a local authority servant at the time and (Stagecoach-owned) United Counties was one of my contractors – only in a very small way. I was able to pass the work on to a friend who was my travelling companion on my frequent visits to Portugal at that time. “Brian phoned me again one day and asked if I would go to the Tower Thistle (now the Guoman) Hotel in London where he had a regular suite to discuss the possibility of me heading up the Stagecoach Portugal operation. I knew that I was qualiied to do the job, but I was a little nervous about returning to an organisation that had spat me out at an earlier point.”

a couple of names and I was very concerned about one of them as he was someone who I felt had damaged the careers of several people who I respected. Brian said my career was at a turning point and I needed to make a move. I pointed out that I was well aware of that, but equally, once bitten, twice shy. “Brian gave me a good offer then and there which he followed up in writing as he promised,” continued Ian. “I wasn’t in the best of health at the time. I agreed to take the job, but later had to put my departure for Portugal on hold for three months until it improved. The partly completed recruitment process for my replacement at Bucks had to be stalled as a result. It was very generous of the authority to do that. “When I did go to Portugal there was a lot

Ian had been Operations Manager at Southdown Motor Services, but was made redundant shortly after the business was acquired by Stagecoach in 1989. “I was particularly concerned as to whom the job would report,” he continued. “At the time Brian was Chairman of the Portuguese company himself. He loved it, but he told me that unfortunately the (Stagecoach board) non-executive directors had suggested they didn’t think that it was a particularly good use of his time. Therefore, he might not be able to stay in that position permanently. He mentioned

of building of bridges to do. The Engineering Director was my appointment, but he hadn’t been introduced to the company in a very constructive way by the caretaker Finance Director. The rest of the staff had been inherited from the Rodoviária de Lisboa. “On my irst day I had a serious meeting with the Scania importer Cimpomóvel and bodybuilder Marcopolo. I was effectively leading a meeting in my fourth language to discuss buses that I’d not actually seen operate in service. I’m a languages graduate – English irst, German second and French third. in my fourth language managing a high level business meeting, but I got through it okay. “The worst problem for the irst fortnight was the prospect of having to answer the phone. I was alright talking to people face to face. It was okay reading material and even writing although, occasionally, it was a little dificult getting used to ‘formal business Portuguese’, but actually answering the telephone and carrying out a meaningful conversation with someone you couldn’t see was quite frightening. “By this stage the question of who was chairing the company had been resolved. It was Roger Bowker who was an extremely easy person to get on with and also a very good and highly competent boss with cultural sensitivity which is also important when working abroad. “I took forward a programme of examining the network as well as introducing a similar plan for growth that we had used at Clydeside Scottish. Portugal was a more regulated environment and there was no competition on the bus services which were run as route concessions. There was for private hires, but that part of the business had already been sold on. “Yet there were potentially a lot of new opportunities - construction of new housing estates that would need to be served by buses, and there was tourism to exploit as well. The new construction at the operational boundaries might lead to tensions with the Brazilians who had bought the other part of Rodoviária de Lisboa. “One of the irst things I did was produce some multilingual publicity in Portuguese, English, German and French. All the tourist services were listed in one timetable booklet that I translated myself. FWT became our cartographers. It was their irst Portuguese work. We also introduced a tourist day ticket, which hadn’t been done before and was a great success. “I can remember Brian’s pleasure, and mine, when we decided that, despite the dificulties of counting passengers when they’re dunking prepaid tickets in Almex cancellations, we calculated that, even taking the most pessimistic view, we had increased passenger numbers by 3% in 1997. No one was really achieving that in Portugal in those days or for that matter yet in the UK. It was really very encouraging. “To improve the output of the operation, we used more British methods of scheduling and rostering, taking surplus vehicles out in the process. In Portugal, drivers had two nominated days a week off. They were told when that was going to be and for many it meant they never had a weekend free unless they could persuade someone to trade. We introduced the kinds of rosters you would have expected in this country. They were much more civilised arrangements for which we were liked, therefore building up staff moral. “We also undertook some proper customer care training for our drivers. Those who had worked for the RN for a long time were often arrogant and had a ‘couldn’t care less’ attitude so I engaged a person, who had worked for the RN, but had gone private and set up his own consultancy. He gave a one day training course to all our staff. There were maybe as many as 39 sessions and I participated in all bar three www.coachandbusweek.com

because I was on holiday. I had a walk on part, rolling up my sleeves and talking about the sorts of problems we faced. “We gave what I think were realistic pay rises, which the rest of the Portuguese industry was not very keen on because it had always operated on the basis of how little it could get

to the drivers and trade unions that they had actually had a lot more money for longer. That cost me booking 120 hotel rooms in Gloucester only for them not to be needed at the end of the day. I wasn’t able to get the charges waved. “We did have a two-day strike at Stagecoach Portugal, but we ran 70% of our operation on

away with. I got a degree of lexibility from staff because of that. “That’s not to say that the Communist trade union didn’t engineer a strike after the end of a two-year deal. I’ve always felt they’re the most dificult to come out of. The only time I had a problem at Stagecoach West was at the end of such a deal because we couldn’t get across

the irst day and 85% on the second. I did what Brian would have wanted which was hiring in buses from other operators. We ran them free, but not without the odd aberration.”

IAN MANNING business development,” said Ian. “One of his first jobs was to work with Ian Mitchell (also from the business development team) alongside me on bidding for the cross-Tagus railway franchise. It was fascinating that our bid fitted into just three ring binders. The Barraqueiro bid amounted to something that was so big it arrived on a lorry in pallets and needed two forklift trucks to unload it. They seemed to have done everything, even including samples of the uniforms. “The day before it was all due in, Martin and people from UBS and our other partner, Mota & Co Construction had been up all night finalising our bid. I had a phone call from Martin about lunch time the next day asking if I could send some staff over to come and help collate it as they were running out of time. Within about 45 minutes, bearing in mind the difficulties of traffic congestion getting into Lisbon from Cascais, I arrived with my three managers. The traffic really was at its worst when it came to taking our bid down to the place where it needed to be delivered, but we succeeded with just minutes to spare. “The restoration of the Sintra Tramway, which was losing us about £75,000 a year, was dogged by arguments about who actually owned it in the first place. There was a Communist councillor, Batiste Alves who claimed that the privatisation sale of the Rodoviária de Lisboa, which had included the assets of the tramway, did not entitle Stagecoach to own and operate it. He thought he’d found some obscure clause somewhere with some interpretation that meant that if the tramway was ever sold by the state, it automatically reverted to the Câmara 20 | COACH & BUS WEEK | August 6, 2014 018_022_CBW1149_Ian Manning.indd 20

Municipal de Sintra. I have to tell you that the legal costs to disprove that along with ongoing negotiations with the local authority was a six figure sum, which for a 150-vehicle bus company was not an inconsiderable burden. “We were dealing with local authority inertia and autocracy where councillors would decide things and officers had no say to stop them. It’s why I’m so opposed to elected mayors to this day. Everyone knew in Portugal what the salary of a mayor was and everyone knew how rich they were after they had been in for a term and had taken bribes for awarding engineering and other major contracts. It was the sheer autocratic power that these people had. You see

“The restoration of the tramway was one of her vanity projects, or so it was seen even though it is one of the very few projects of Portuguese national transport history (all trambased!). A large amount of money was spent on renewing the infrastructure, but the job wasn’t done to a very high standard. I remember getting Graham Eccles who was then Stagecoach Group Executive Director for South West Trains to patrol the project and the line with me to see how we could minimise the damage that had been done. The wheel sets on the trams, for example, were wearing out because the curves of the rails were not set properly. “We employed two people who had been

it now in this country with some mayors who in my view are acting to the total detriment of public transport. So it was there. “I remember the personal insult I received in a newspaper from the Mayor of Sintra claiming I didn’t understand tourism! She was one of the Portuguese Prime Minister’s rising stars although I have to say I was really delighted when she was comprehensively voted out after only one term. She had spent almost her entire budget on culture and art. The people who lived in squalur in the area’s blocks of flats felt totally abandoned by her policies.

involved with the tramway before and a Scottish tramway enthusiast, Bob Docherty, and we got it running in the timescales we said we would. It was just that after the first few days of interest, it continued to lose a substantial amount of money each year until, ultimately, we managed to sell it back to the local authority. “Travelling on the tramway was a very worthwhile journey, but we were only able to charge ‘buttons’ for it because otherwise people felt it was expensive compared to other forms of transport. We were never going to be able to cover the operational costs. The local authority

seems to have found the money over the years, but it’s still not charging enough. The tramway still runs, but rather sporadically for reasons that are not very clear.”

A different culture

“We had inherited two depots, one at Abóboda, the other at Alvide which was in very poor condition and provided poor working conditions for staff,” said Ian. “We sold the Alvide site for redevelopment as a Pingo Doce supermarket. We actually lost the use of it before we were able to conclude the deal on the new premises that were to be built on a big owned parking area at Adroana. Stagecoach Group’s construction department helped spearhead and quality control the development. It was a very signiicant new depot and headquarters with good facilities - probably amongst the best in Portugal at the time and all for less than £2m. “It took us two years to get planning permission because we’re British and we didn’t bribe the local authority bureaucrats who gave it out. What you were supposed to do, apparently to help grease the process, was offer the opportunity for some paid outside work that probably wouldn’t be declared to the iscal authorities. That would involve some plans and additional paperwork that then needed to be submitted. “In the end, I had to use political contacts that I had developed, not with the appropriate political party either, to make sure that the Mayor of Cascais actually signed the paperwork to permit the construction. “That wasn’t the end of it. Having got the depot built, we then needed an electricity supply. We don’t bribe electricity companies either and the depot was actually ready for three months before we had electricity. “We used to employ someone on light duties who had been a conductor, but wasn’t able to go driving because of a medical condition. It

The first official inauguration of the Sintra tramway was in September 1997. Ian Manning is centre with company officials and the Sintra Mayoress at the Praia das Maçãs terminal. IAN MANNING just so happened he knew someone senior in the electricity company, put a word in the appropriate ear and we had a supply the following day. We didn’t have to bribe them to do it. These were some of the things that were dificult. “Just as in the UK, the bus industry wasn’t really interesting to the Portuguese government. It was just left to run the way that it had always done with fare increases decided on and imposed every year. Despite the industry having been privatised, our actual sources of revenue were determined to a degree by the government and that also made it more dificult. I understand that last year fares were put up by 25% in one go. You can imagine the affect that has had on patronage.

“When it came to applying for new route concessions, we never oficially got the authorisation through. No one would tell you anything. If we were increasing what we were doing it was generally regarded as okay so long as we didn’t go on to another operator’s patch. There was a series of protectionist type rules that were applied if that happened with greater route length being one advantage. “Equally, if we wanted to reduce services, we wouldn’t get formal authorisation. We just tried to go ahead and do it anyway. Provided no one from the local authority got any complaints and objected, we would get away with it. “My inal working day in Portugal was the inauguration of the new depot which was done with considerable pomp and ceremony, a

All the roller shutter doors of the 10-bay workshop went up together to reveal a brand new fleet of buses. There had never been a bus company open day anywhere in Portugal and we were absolutely mobbed by interested members of the general public as well as industry colleagues and friends. The traditional bouncy castle for children was substituted by the Portuguese equivalent of rides on the back of imitation bulls. “The Ambassador before Sir John was Roger Westbrook who was involved in the inauguration of the Sintra tramway. When you become an expat working in the business community, Britain does look after you. I hadn’t been there all that long before my first invitation to dine at the ambassador’s residence and it would be unusual for more than six months to go by without an invitation to something that the embassy was involved in. We regularly received protectionist notices about terrorism and things like that. Staff were always helpful and friendly.”

Looking back

“We completely modernised the Stagecoach Portugal fleet, had a happy and contented workforce, and were able to expand into other things such as tourism,” said Ian. “We made 28% operating profit in 1998 when most British companies would have killed for 11% or 12%. That was the year of Expo ’98 in Lisbon and we grew patronage considerably. “In my time we effectively doubled the value of the company. I think perhaps the sale of the business shortly after I left in March 2000 might not have been a bad thing for the Group in retrospect, although I certainly didn’t think so at the time. It was at the height of its value, but it went to VIMECA which replaced the entire management team and support staff over a three to four year period and they had been a superb and highly dedicated workforce. “Surprisingly, to the Portuguese I think I was regarded as having been successful, but there 22 | COACH & BUS WEEK | August 6, 2014 018_022_CBW1149_Ian Manning.indd 22

The 10-bay Adroana depot had to wait three months before receiving an electricity supply. STAGECOACH PORTUGAL were occasional minor tensions. Getting fleet information for my historical work and books became a little bit difficult sometimes because of fear of competition! “The decision to leave was hard for me. At the time it looked as if Stagecoach Group was going to make further acquisitions in Portugal, which I had facilitated, but it didn’t happen. I’d also discovered that Arriva had shown an interest in Stagecoach Portugal and asked to see the numbers. I’d been told that every now and then other companies were allowed to do that, but

there was no serious intent to sell. “Arriva had made me an offer to go and run its operation in northern Portugal. It was a 37% increase in salary and there was also the prospect of European development - ideal for a linguist like me - but I swithered for months before accepting the job. The decision never felt right at the time. “I always say management is 90% common sense and 10% knowing the ground rules. This was, however the first time in my career that I had not shared with other people what I was going to do. I eventually told my secretary, Ana Cristina Sena and Engineering Director Luís Mota, but that was all. “I remember when we finally made the announcement I was going, people had come into the room smiling. When they heard the news, I could see hope drain out of some of their faces. I felt terrible. “As a caring manager given the way in which the Brazilians subsequently treated my former colleagues, I still have the odd nightmare about it to this day even though I can continue to look back on the company’s achievements with pride and affection.” n www.coachandbusweek.com

You know it’s Arriva, but this is posh Arriva. Not so stunning is the timetable information. As I await one of the blue saloons, I peruse Conwy County Council’s at-stop info. Wrong – still showing the previous frequency of every 12 minutes. It’s now every 10. Maybe the ‘experience’ of using Sapphire should extend to the waiting ‘experience’ and have bespoke Sapphire branded information at every stop… Within minutes, one has arrived. “Nice, aren’t they?” exclaimed the pensioner who was waiting with me. “Sparkly,” says I. He nods his head, swipes his pass and heads for a posh seat. Things are also looking good for me. Last year, the fare was £6.50 – an Arriva North West & Wales day ticket, which covers a huge area, but you’d struggle to cover a significant chunk of it. This year, a ‘Wales only’ version for a fiver is on offer. The friendly, 24 | COACH & BUS WEEK | August 6, 2014

The at-stop timetable information was out of date

Shortly after midday, Phil found bunching on the route

smart driver takes my crisp note and hands me a day ticket, and I’m off upstairs to experience the comfy seats and WiFi. The WiFi works, but the power points don’t – so my battery-hungry phone has to go without its regular fix of charge. I try a couple of sockets – eyed up by locals who think I might have lost the plot slightly – and decide that none of them are in action. Several of the natives are playing with their handsets though – presumably free WiFi is a hit. It’s just gone midday, but I spot several 12s bunching – a familiar phenomenon with high frequency routes I guess, but still uncomfortable to see, as the big sparklies chase each other along the coast. Double-decking route 12 is a masterstroke. The route had single deckers last year – very nice ones, as it goes, but on double deckers, you can see the sea! I felt about five again looking out into the distance high off the coastline. This route, once part of the original ‘Cymru Coastliner’ has come alive again. It’s supposedly the hottest day of the year thus far, and it’s getting a bit humid on the Sapphire. No air-conditioning, but the sea breeze is wafting in through the windows. The locals in Rhoson-Sea nibble on their cornets and admire our Sapphire – it really is a head-turner. They’re probably old enough to remember Arriva’s predecessor Crosville – and a bus stop in Colwyn Bay still in situ can remind them. Upstairs is classic Stenning design. Cove panels explain all that is good about this high level of bus travel – with English on the left, Welsh on the right. Legroom passes the Tonks test – at 6’7” I’m acutely aware of cramming in as many seats as operators can. Sapphire is superb, however. The seats themselves are extremely comfortable. We arrive into Rhyl bus station, where another busy crowd await the next journey. Two Arriva staff are doing what appears to be some sort of ‘host’ duties, assisting with buggies and checking concessionary passes before boarding (perhaps

too many of us ‘English’ are sneakily trying to use them), but I wonder if they are doing anything about the bunching further down the route. Arriva Sapphire may be one of the best experiences the bus industry can offer, but Rhyl bus station is a huge let down. Rebuilt only a couple of years ago, it is already in a poor, rundown condition. None of the digital information seems to be working correctly, and the once state of the art departure screen appears to have transformed itself into a bin for discarded cigarette ends. At least Denbighshire

Council has got a new up to date timetable on the 12 departure stand which shows the correct 12-minute frequency. I wander off and sample the open topper service before returning for some more Sapphire. My next trip is flipped on its head. This time, the power sockets are working but the WiFi isn’t. My phone screen rolls around with the statement ‘Obtaining IP address’ – which it never does – so I give up. This bus also has announcements – which I wasn’t aware the last one should have. A DJ-like male vocal tells me where I am, which is actually very helpful. I decide to hop off at Foryd Harbour and take some pictures of passing Sapphires and board another Llandudno-bound service. My next one has power points in working order, but I experience another disaster with the WiFi. This time it appears working, but tells me I have to sign in again. However, it will won’t direct me to the sign in page. It takes six attempts to do this and I manage to check two emails before it tells me my ‘Connection is unstable.’ Anyway, who wants to look at their phone with such stunning views through the looking glass (as Alice might say…) I’m sitting towards the rear of this Sapphire, and I notice that, after only a week in service, this one rattles quite a bit. Also of note is something which must plague every inhabitant of the seaside – the stuff that seagulls ‘produce.’ This is my third Sapphire trip and every one so far has been blighted by such offerings. Rhyl garage will have to keep these buses clean every day – otherwise Sapphire is going to lose its sparkle very quickly. I’m soon back in Llandudno, and I ride the 12 right up to West Shore, where it terminates outside the old tram stop – which, sadly, has seen much better days. Another Sapphire is already in situ and drivers exchange brief pleasantries before one departs back along the coastal highway to Rhyl. n www.coachandbusweek.com

TRAINING AND SAFETY : The latest engines and transmissions can help vehicles run at peak fuel and emissions efficiency

Getting in gear This week’s Industry Guide showcases some of the new engine and transmission technology on offer in the industry, alongside companies specialising in servicing, remanufacturing and creating fuel-saving diesel additives

28 | COACH & BUS WEEK | August 6, 2014 028_037_CBW1149_Industry Guide.indd 28

A

s fuel costs rise, coach and bus operators look to manufacturers and suppliers to soften the blow with more economic drivelines. Torn between a choice of two, an operator looking to buy a new coach or bus will, more often than not, side with the one promising the better mpg. Likewise, when giving a vehicle a second or third life, be that with an engine, exhaust system or transmission upgrade, products and services promising more economic operation and repair are big attractions for operators. More and more companies are offering remanufacturing of older engines to help them keep up with the ever more stringent

Euro emissions standards. This process can help operators without the financial clout to invest in a new fleet to keep their buses and coaches running on a par with modern vehicles, or even provide a valid alternative to brand new vehicles in the tough economic climate. For those who are investing in a new fleet, engine and transmission technology is constantly improving and many manufacturers are trialling new products already. It isn’t all about physical parts though. Fuel additives are claimed to be a means of improving fuel efficiency and even a way of aiding maintenance. A growing number of large operators are carrying out extensive trials to determine and verify the claims. n www.coachandbusweek.com

ALLISON TRANSMISSION

For the first time, Istanbul Otobüs A.Ş. has equipped its 110 new 12-meter Temsa Avenue CNG buses with Allison fully automatic transmissions. Specified with Allison fully automatic transmissions to maximize vehicle efficiency, Turkish manufacturer Temsa recently delivered its first 12-meter Avenue CNG buses to the operator. With its population of more than 14 million, traffic congestion in Istanbul ranks among the worst in the world. Istanbul Otobüs develops public transport solutions that reduce car use in the city and preferred Temsa’s new Allison-equipped CNG bus model in light of positive results from passenger satisfaction and environmental consciousness studies. According to Abdullah Yasir Sahin, General Manager of Istanbul Otobüs A.S, Allison’s technology complements CNG engines by enhancing vehicle performance. “We prefer more comfortable, economical and safer transportation models,

Allison generates solutions that address both market demands for more environmentally-friendly vehicles and the power and performance challenges that characterize engines built to use alternative fuel therefore we gave preference to TEMSA’s Avenue CNG vehicles,” said Sahin. “Allison fully automatic transmissions, with recognized CNG engine compatibility, were the inevitable option for continuous stop and start operations.” Allison Transmission’s Torqmatic Series is specifically

designed for city buses having engine power up to 410 kW. The T350R transmission installed in these Temsa buses has six forward and one reverse gear and is equipped with advanced fifth Generation electronic controls. Continuous power is transferred smoothly during each gearshift while engine torque is multiplied

at launch enhancing CNG engine performance. As a result, Allison-equipped vehicles not only accelerate faster –but also perform more efficiently. In dense city traffic, Allison Automatics offers other benefits as well. “Our drivers feel comfortable because they can focus completely on the road, thanks to Allison fully automatic transmissions. This, in turn, provides us many advantages in terms of reliable service and safety,” said Sahin. Taner Gider, Allison’s Area Manager for Turkey and the Middle East, emphasised the advantages offered by fully automatic transmissions compatible with CNG engines. “Allison generates solutions that address both market demands for more environmentally-friendly vehicles and the power and performance challenges that characterize engines built to use alternative fuels,” he said.

TRAINING AND SAFETY VOITH TURBO

Voith Turbo, the German manufacturer of automatic gearboxes for buses, is planning to showcase new products and service packages at Euro Bus Expo 2014 at the NEC in November. “Having enjoyed considerable sales success in the UK this year, we will be focusing on raising awareness of our new products and the benefits of our service packages at the show,” said John Domigan, Sales and Marketing Manager for Voith Turbo. He said that the company would be turning the spotlight on:Voith’s new Euro 6 compliant DIWA.6 automatic transmission; The launch of Voith compressors into the UK bus market; and The continuing refinement of service packages for UK customers. “We have already announced major inroads into the municipal market this year, and over the coming weeks are planning to make further announcements on sales successes,” said John. “All this comes at a time when we are gearing up for the introduction of DIWA.6 into the UK, following its successful launch into mainland European markets this year.” The DIWA.6 will reduce noise emissions, provide better thermal stability, and will improve efficiency. It has been designed for double-deckers, single-deckers, and the midi-bus sector. “The improved design of DIWA.6 will contribute to improve fuel efficiency by between three and five per cent,” said John. “The new transmission clocked up thousands of miles of proving in trials with different manufacturers’ buses throughout Europe before it went on sale earlier this year.” Voith’s DIWA system comes from Differential Wandler – German for differential torque converter that incorporates a retarder. The DIWA’s first gear replaces the first two gears

Voith Turbo’s new automatic transmission, the DIWA.6, specifically designed for the stop-start cycle of buses

on a conventional automatic transmission cutting fuel consumption. It also reduces gear shifts at lower speeds giving a more comfortable ride for passengers. John added: “Our transmissions are made specifically for the stop-start cycle of buses, and are sold on fuel efficiency, reliability, and longevity.” At the show Voith will also be exhibiting its compressors for buses which are to be launched into the UK in the near future. At present the company is undertaking detailed research to explore business opportunities with bus and engine manufacturers to fit compressors to new vehicles. The retro-fit market is also being investigated. In mainland Europe Voith compressors are already fitted as original equipment to an increasing number of MercedesBenz and MAN bus applications. “We believe that our technology produces distinct advantages,” said John. “Our compressors not only reduce fuel consumption but also achieve significantly longer duty cycles.” He said that Voith’s unique intercooling system reduces

30 | COACH & BUS WEEK | August 6, 2014 028_037_CBW1149_Industry Guide.indd 30

power uptake during delivery. At the same time the compression temperature drops allowing longer duty cycles and increased air delivery per hour. “The newly developed idle system reduces fuel consumption by as much as one litre per 100 kilometres and – as a result of reduced temperatures – the engine oil is subjected to less stress. Oil cracking and the formation of harmful substances are therefore prevented. “Better air quality leads to a longer life for the system, and our compressors can work at higher pressure levels - over 15 bar can be achieved.” John said Voith Turbo will be offering two main products. The LP490 is a two cyclinder Euro 6 compliant compressor, and the LP700 is a three-cyclinder unit for more demanding applications. The LP700 has been used in the 20-metre long four-axle low-floor CapaCity buses in Turkey since 2008. A total of 250 buses, each with a carrying capacity of 193, operate in the harshest conditions in the BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) Metro system in Istanbul. John said that Voith had also

been finding ways to continually improve its service to customers. “We are unique in this market in that we employ our own specialist engineers who are in bus depots helping our customers everyday,” he said. “We have specialist knowledge in marrying and optimising the best combination of engines, gearboxes and drivelines. As Voith Turbo employs 6,000 people in 80 countries, including key bus markets such as North America and Hong Kong, we can become a global strategic partner to bus operators by offering the same specialist knowledge around the world.” Voith Turbo has also recently developed new software technology that could save UK bus operators hundreds of thousands of pounds a year. Extensive trials have demonstrated that the software can predict and prevent expensive gearbox failures – enabling costly downtime to be virtually eliminated through new planned maintenance programmes. TRAINING AND SAFETY QUEENSBRIDGE PSV

Queensbridge PSV is an independent specialist engine, transmission and driveline company based in Wakefield. Established in West Yorkshire since 1991, the firm has and continues to be a main supply line of engines, transmissions, gearboxes, axles and differentials for the largest bus and coach operators. The company’s aim is to provide an aftermarket service solution to rival the Original Equipment Manufacturers, but at a reduced cost to the customer. Its product knowledge encompasses ZF, Voith and Allison transmissions, ZF, Volvo, Leyland, Eaton, Spicer axles and differentials. Queensbridge PSV offers onsite diagnostics, with the use of the relevant test equipment. MobiDig and Testman for the ZF, DIWAgnosis for the Voith and ProLink for the Allison. The firm’s engineers also give it the opportunity to supply and fit its factory rebuilt and tested transmission units, which give

the added benefit of the vehicle transmission operations being commissioned upon refitment. Queensbridge PSV’s engine rebuild teams have been within the engine reman industry for over 25 years and can fully overhaul any engine. These range from Cummins to MAN and from Mercedes to Volvo. The firm carries a stock of Cummins engines for Dennis Darts and Dennis Tridents and can offer a cost effective alternative to Original Equipment Manufacturers. The driveline division has the skill and diversity to fully overhaul any of today’s modern drop centre axles, including Volvo Olympian, B7, B9 and B10 and Dennis Trident all within three working days. Therefore, whether it is a ZF Ecomat or an AS-Tronic, Voith DIWA or Allison World Series, axle, engine or differential, Queensbridge PSV has the knowledge and experience to service operators’ needs. A wide range of diverse skills

are employed by the Queenbridge PSV gearbox shop technicians to facilitate the rebuild of virtually all gearbox and transmission types in service with UK bus and coach operators. These can be identified into the following three groups: a) Fully automatic transmission manufactured by ZF, Voith, and Allison, and fitted to the entire range of recent and current production vehicles; b) Epicyclic gearboxes both pneumocyclic (air controlled) and hydracyclic (oil controlled) as originally fitted by Leyland, Daimler, Volvo, Bristol and AEC. Many of these older vehicles remain in U.K. and overseas service and Queensbridge remains the principal rebuilder and supplier; c) Manual gearboxes, with and without a range change or splitter as fitted by various coach and truck manufacturers. Queensbridge rebuilds and stocks manual gearboxes produced by Eaton, Mercedes, Volvo, ZF and others.

Moving on to engine rebuilds, on arrival at the Queensbridge PSV plant, all units are subjected to our standard flow-line operation. This system comprises complete stripping, cleaning and inspection, and the rejection by the Queensbrige quality control department of any worn parts not up to original manufacturer’s specification. Queensbridge PSV’s standard procedure is to replace all bearings, bushes, ‘o’ rings, clutch plates, brake bands, piston seals and oil seals. All components not to original manufacturer’s tolerances and standards are replaced with units, which have been overhauled in the reconditioning shop. Once assembled, units are subjected to rigorous testing on Queensbridge PSV’s automated dynamic testing facility to ensure all engineering performance standards have been met.

ENERGENICS

Measures to reduce harmful emissions from diesel engines maintain a high profile as concerns about air quality in city centres continue to make the headlines. Low Emission Zone requirements in London and elsewhere have led to many vehicles being retrofitted with Diesel Particulate Filters (DPFs). The introduction of Euro VI emissions limits mean that most new buses and coaches will be factory fitted with a soot filter. To keep the exhaust clean of particulates (soot), however, the DPF itself needs to be kept clean. But the filter will rapidly block up unless a process called regeneration occurs to clear out the soot that it is designed to trap. Soot or carbon particles will burn completely away – like charcoal on a BBQ – provided they reach a temperature of around 600°C, and DPFs rely upon exhaust gas temperatures becoming hot enough for this to happen. Vehicles regularly run at high speed and carrying significant loads produce enough

www.coachandbusweek.com

028_037_CBW1149_Industry Guide.indd 33

heat in their exhaust gases to achieve this, but this is not always the case. Operating problems with DPFs related to excessive soot blocking continue to be reported especially in urban and some rural areas. Slow traffic speeds can mean the exhaust gases do not reach the necessary temperature for long enough to regenerate the filter. This means it may gradually block up with soot, leading to poor running of the vehicle. Fuel economy may also suffer as the engine has to work harder against the back pressure caused by soot build up in the exhaust system. Envirox DPF Assist is a proven Fuel Borne Catalyst (FBC) formulation that specifically addresses these issues. It is a further development of the well-known nanotechnology fuel additive Envirox from Energenics Europe. Regular Envirox is mainly targeted at saving fuel and is usually supplied in drum quantities to bus depots where it is injected into bulk diesel fuel.

This has had a high profile in the UK bus industry since Stagecoach adopted it nationally in 2005. However, at higher dose levels the active cerium oxide nanocatalyst in Envirox will perform as an effective Fuel Borne Catalyst (FBC), a wellestablished class of fuel additives which have a proven history of regenerating DPFs. It works by: Decreasing the level of soot particles produced during combustion; and Significantly lowering the temperature the exhaust gases need to reach to burn off the trapped soot particles in the DPF. It also includes a strong dose of the detergent additive chemistry used by premium fuel retailers to clean fuel injectors and preserve optimal spray patterns. Envirox DPF Assist is supplied in a convenient 500ml bottle with a 25ml dispensing chamber which is well matched to the dosing recommendations. The concentrated formula means that one bottle will treat up to 1,000 litres of diesel and more than

A single multishot bottle of Envirox DPF Assist treats up to 1,000 litres of diesel

AVID TECHNOLOGY

AVID is known in the bus industry as the pioneers of the eFan Micro Hybrid System, which is being retrofitted to thousands of buses across the world to improve fuel consumption and reduce emissions through improved thermal management. The technology is also now being adopted by several vehicle manufacturers as part of their Euro 6 programs. What is not so widely known in the industry is AVID’s technology and expertise beyond this award winning system. The company’s MD Ryan Maughan explains: “AVID’s expertise is in taking things that are normally driven by hydraulics or belts off the engine and electrifying them, when combined with intelligent charging systems and energy recovery this has the potential to make a huge impact on efficiency.” The company is experienced in highly efficient motor and electronics design and has CFD and FEA capabilities that have helped it to secure several development programs with leading vehicle and engine manufacturers. Some of which are developments of

existing fan, pump and alternator technology but others are taking the company into new areas involving very high-speed electrical machines and electronics. As with the Micro Hybrid System, AVID aims to bring these advances in technology to the retrofit market and is developing some retrofit solutions with several product launches promised for the coming months. The new products are complementary to the eFan Micro Hybrid System and can either be installed at the same time or as upgrades in the future to further improve vehicle efficiency. This includes a 535 Amp version of the existing 450 Amp alternator, intelligent alternator control module, an electrohydraulic power steering module and a further new technology to improve low speed engine performance and significantly reduce emissions that the company is keeping close to its chest for now, but is beginning on engine testing in September.

CUMMINS

Cummins’ class leading ISB Euro 6 engines are featuring strongly with OEMs across Europe, delivering impressive results in efficiency. Ashley Watton, Cummins’ Bus Engine Sales Leader for Europe, said: “Our engineers worked closely with our customers to meet their needs and provide the best all round package in terms of fuel economy and performance. We have seen a number of products launched to date with excellent results.” To meet the ultra-low levels of Euro 6, these engines use proven technologies of cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and variable geometry turbocharging (VGT). The Cummins VGT is optimised for high torque and low speed capability, delivering significant performance and driveability improvements. The engine works with the latest Cummins designed exhaust aftertreatment technology, combining a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) to meet the ultra-low levels of emissions. The patented SCR design uses Copper Zeolite technology for very high conversion efficiency, even at low temperatures. The four-cylinder ISB4.5 engine is available up to 210PS, with an excellent power to weight ratio and delivers a strong peak torque of 760Nm. The six-cylinder 6.7litre ISB engine extends up to 310PS for coach installations, and 280PS for bus applications. Peak torque remains at a high level of 1100Nm. For Euro 4 and 5, Cummins adopted a very successful emissions strategy using SCR. ISB engines delivered class-leading levels of fuel economy with low www.coachandbusweek.com

AdBlue usage. For Euro 6, Euro 5 fuel consumption levels will be at least maintained, and AdBlue consumption reduced to around 2-3% of diesel. Alexander Dennis’ brand new Enviro400 bus, launched recently, features the ISB6.7 Euro 6 engine. It has a number of key product improvements making it lighter, with more passenger capacity, easier to maintain and more fuel efficient by 12%. VDL Bus & Coach has used Euro 6 ISB4.5 and ISB6.7 engines for contracts in Finland, Belgium and Germany in its Citea buses. With over 350 ordered, operators are seeing economy gains of at least 20% with standard drivelines and more in hybrids. Also available for Euro 6 is the 8.9litre ISL G natural gas engine, available from 250 to 320PS for alternative fuel bus applications, with a peak torque of 1,356Nm. It uses a combination of cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) with stoichiometric combustion. Cummins cooled EGR lowers combustion temperatures and reduces engine out emissions and noise. Stoichiometric combustion, where fuel is burned completely, ensures an oxygen free exhaust. It enables the use of highly efficient three-way catalyst aftertreatment. The maintenance-free, three-way catalyst technology is an effective, simple, passive device, packaged as part of the exhaust muffler, providing consistent emissions control across the operating range. This engine is installed in the Solaris Urbino 12 CNG bus. T: 01933 334200 E: cduksales@ cummins.com W: www.cummins-uk.com

TRAINING AND SAFETY ZF

For more than a decade, ZF’s AS-Tronic has been relieving drivers from the tiring effects of repetitive clutch operation and gear shifting. In addition to improving comfort and safety, it delivers reliable, economical and virtually maintenance-free operation. Economy – To provide optimally coordinated shifting, the transmission combines tried and trusted ZF technology with modern electronics, developed specifically for vehicles with electronic diesel control (EDC) engines and controller area network (CAN) communication capabilities. Employing 12 closely stepped gears enables the engine to always operate in the most economical range, leading to significant fuel savings. An integrated retarder (ZF Intarder) allows for safe, fade-free deceleration and reduces brake wear. Comfort and control – Passengers clearly benefit from the comfort of quick and precise gear changes without clutch release and engagement jolts, but importantly the driver also enjoys a significantly

The ZF AS-Tronic family of automated manual transmissions: ZF AS-Tronic (rear), AS-Tronic Mid (front left) and AS-Tronic Lite (front righ more relaxed driving environment. In automatic mode, the ZF ASTronic selects appropriate gear changes depending on conditions such as driver demand, engine load, vehicle acceleration, driven versus nondriven wheel speed, and a variety of other inputs. According to the situation, the driver can

36 | COACH & BUS WEEK | August 6, 2014 028_037_CBW1149_Industry Guide.indd 36

switch the transmission from automatic to manual mode and vice versa at any time with the press of a button. Maintenance – The AS-Tronic is a very low maintenance unit; no dedicated cooling of the transmission is required, the typical interval between oil

changes is 185,000 miles and the integrated ZF clutch requires no preventive maintenance. Clutch actuation is achieved pneumatically with air solenoids and valves rather than hydraulically. The clutch selfadjusting system is microprocessor controlled and the release bearing, clutch fork and push rod do not need periodic lubrication. As a result, and taking into account extensive field tests, the estimated life of the clutch system is in excess of 500,000 miles. In the event of clutch overload or need of replacement, the system will alert the driver via the touch pad display. Vehicle compatibility – The ASTronic has a high torque capacity of up to 2,700 Nm. However, to make the comfort and economy benefits available to vehicles in lower weight categories, the AS-Tronic Mid and AS-Tronic Lite ensure that torque outputs from 600 to 2,700 Nm can be accommodated.

GROENEVELD

As the demand for public transport rises, so does the importance of making sure your bus fleet runs as efficiently as possible, with the most effective maintenance regime. To assist fleet operations, Groeneveld’s Oilmaster saves operators the cost of unnecessary topping up of the engine oil level, as well as the hassle of manually checking the engine oil, by automatically monitoring the level and topping up accordingly as required. It can also help to avoid potentially huge repair bills as a result of poor oil management. Richard Hamper, Groeneveld’s UK Sales Manager for Bus and Rail Applications, said: “Using the Oilmaster system creates a more rigorous and diligent regime within your business.” Simply checking oil with the dipstick on your vehicle the level is not clear or perhaps the vehicle has been parked on uneven ground - the oil level may not be true, which means you could be over or under-filling it. The Oilmaster system removes the

potential for human error and it ensures you have a reliable and accurate oil capacity level in the vehicle’s sump. That’s the main issue. It also enables you to use oil more efficiency as there is no waste. Should a technical problem arise on the engine such as a leak, having the reservoir will offer protection by continuing to supply oil to the engine, hopefully until the technical problem is identified. The system protects both aspects. Richard further explains. “What we do is very simple. Every engine has its optimum oil level. It doesn’t need to be running at almost full. The Oilmaster unit will check with the sensor attached to the engine every time the engine is started, if the oil level is still at the optimum oil level as initially installed, the system will remain dormant.”

DELIVERIES NEW ADVENTURE TRAVEL Experience, safety and reliability were deciding factors in South Wales operator New Adventure Travel (NAT) Group selecting two new Jonckheere bodied Volvo B9R coaches. Well aware of Volvo’s reputation for safety and performance, having specified Volvo coaches previously along with the strength of the brand gave NAT the confidence to purchase two B9Rs. Based near Cardiff city centre, the operator runs a mix of local contracts, UK and European private hire and holidays. It also has premier sporting contracts with Swansea City Football Club and Cardiff Devils Hockey Club. The two new B9Rs

are specified with 53 passenger seats and an onboard toilet. They are operating on NAT’s Anglia Tours contract, which involves regular continental excursions in its busy tour programme. “We love the Volvo Jonckheere combination,” explained NAT Group Managing Director, Kevin Jones. “They are good solid and reliable vehicles and our drivers like the I-Shift gearbox because it makes their life so much easier. “Having specified Volvo previously and with purchasing a B11R last year, we know the emphasis Volvo places on safety. The health and well-being of our passengers is of paramount importance to us and with Volvo we get safety and reliability as standard.”

The new coaches feature Volvo’s rear-mounted D9B 9.4-litre engine, capable of 380hp and also have electronically controlled air suspension to provide a greater level of comfort for passengers. “Volvo coaches currently make up a relatively small percentage of NAT Group’s overall fleet,” explained Regional Coach Sales Manager, Jo Standbridge. “This is something we’d like to change over time. We are looking to continue building our relationship with them.” FACT FILE

WOODSTONES Kidderminster-based Woodstones Coaches has upgraded its fleet by taking delivery of two new Volvo B8R Euro 6 coaches featuring Plaxton’s Leopard coach bodywork. The new coaches are the first Euro 6 standard vehicles delivered to the Worcestershire operator and Managing Director Richard Meredith believes the combination represents an important environmental investment. “Our two new Volvo coaches set a new Euro 6 environmental standard locally,” he explained. “We’ve always prided ourselves on being a progressive operator and these vehicles add significantly to our green credentials. “This delivery also provides us with an opportunity to continue the successful working relationship that we

have established with Volvo and Plaxton over a number of years. Our six vehicle fleet is all specified on the Volvo chassis. “We also liked the chassis size of the B8R and the Plaxton body styling. Overall, we just felt the vehicles would be reliable and

perfectly compliment the other coaches in our fleet.” The 12.8m coaches feature the new 7.7-litre D8K Euro 6 engine with SCR technology and a ZF six-speed automatic gearbox. They are specified with 57 reclining passenger seats with three-point belts and a CCTV system, which

combines internal and reversing cameras. Established in 1957 and moving to modern purposebuilt premises on Hoo Farm Industrial Estate in 1983, the company’s six coaches are engaged on a variety of school work and private hire across the region.

Monday: The familiar hectic Monday. Tuesday: Interview a strong candidate for our Staff Writer position. Leave the office mid afternoon for the 3.5-hour drive to the Welsh borderland. Stay at a highly recommended B&B – my parents. However, work matters rumble around in my head late into the night.

Kramer meets furry Kramer The card may have been a pseudo-petition, but Baroness Kramer was happy to receive it nonetheless

Wednesday: Spend an interesting and enjoyable day on a disability awareness Driver CPC course hosted by former employer, Tanat Valley Coaches. I learn some sign language and how to tend to the needs of those with autism, or who are blind, among others. I don rose-tinted specs about my surroundings. The Welsh description of Mwynder Maldwyn (the gentleness of Montgomeryshire) springs to mind. Drive back after tea, but the A14 is shut at Catthorpe and around Kettering, so have to divert via Northampton. I’m then held at Thrapston roundabout as it’s being resurfaced. Arrive back at 2300hrs. Lie awake until 0100hrs – I get off to sleep by driving an old bus route in my head.

A very special birthday present has been presented to Transport Minister, Baroness Kramer – a guide dog puppy named after her. The minister instantly fell in love with her furry namesake, who will go on to train as a guide dog and in the future join the thousands of guide dogs who help visually impaired people live independently. Guide Dogs’ campaigns team presented the minister with the puppy to raise awareness of the need for audio-visual technology on buses, to help puppy Kramer’s future owner and

Thursday: A hectic day in the office, working against the clock. I also write up some plans for the future. After all, my travelling this week has given me ample thinking time.

We admit that we’re no saints here at CBW – and like the rest of the media, we’re sadly not immune from making the cringe-worthy odd mistake. No matter how confident one can be, the odd howler still seems to slip through the net every now and then. In a story about service changes, a regional newspaper referred to a well-known bus operator as a not too dissimilarly-named insurance company. According to the Express & Star, it’s Aviva not Arriva. It was bound to happen at some stage – that is, assuming it’s not cropped up elsewhere already. The relevant extract read: “Aviva

Friday: After a busy morning, leave the office at 1245hrs as I’m on half day – I have an appointment with my financial advisor at 1500hrs. I’m shattered, so have a nap on the sofa. However, like both grandfathers, I find it hard to rest when there are jobs to do – so cut the front garden hedge, until rain stops play.

to use buses because they don’t know whether they are on the right bus, where the bus is going or where their stop is. As many people with a visual impairment rely on buses, the lack of talking buses in their area can leave them isolated at home. “Talking buses can be easily and cheaply introduced to bus fleets across the country, to help people with sight loss, and other passengers, use buses with confidence. We want the Government to act now to change the law and bring in talking buses across the country.”

other people with sight loss to use buses. The puppy was presented to Baroness Kramer at the Department for Transport in London, along with a birthday card signed by almost 900 people calling for the government to change the law to introduce talking buses across the country. James White, Guide Dogs Campaigns Manager said: “Kramer the puppy will grow up to do fantastic work enabling someone to get out and about independently. However, many people with a visual impairment are unable

It is a bus operator or an insurer? TONY HUNTER Midland has announced a host of changes which saw the 32 bus serving Hednesford, Cannock, Heath Hayes and Brownhills, axed. Other services in Cannock and Walsall have also had

their timetables changed.” So, next time you spell Arriva, you’d best insure – we mean, ensure – you get the name right. It’s certainly good fun...
