s summer begins to turn, it’s time to look to the skies over Blashford Lakes Nature Reserve in search of passing migrants. Birds like osprey will be making their way back to Africa whilst our hirundines will be gathering to feed over Ibsley Water before they too head south. A good time to look for this feeding frenzy of swallows, swifts and martins is just after rain, which seems to bring the insects down over the water with the birds not far behind. As some birds leave others are starting to arrive. The great white egret is likely to return any day now from its holidays in France to spend the autumn and winter with us. Duck numbers are also starting to build up with representatives of several species including gadwall, tufted duck, wigeon, mallard and shoveler out on the water. As usual at this time of year it can be quite difficult to sort many of them out as the usually distinctive drakes have moulted into a somewhat drab ‘eclipse’ plumage, similar to

the females. This is thought to be a survival mechanism, making them less conspicuous whilst they moult their flight feathers. Late summer is a great time to be keeping a watchful eye out for this year’s fledglings. Kingfisher in particular will be starting to disperse themselves throughout the reserve, giving you the best chance of seeing one; either a flash of bright blue or if you are lucky enough they may choose to settle on one of the many perches outside the front of Goosander or the Ivy Lake hides. On a sunny day make the most of the summer and search for butterflies, including brimstone, peacock, red admiral, small white, large white, green-veined white, silverwashed fritillary, painted lady, gatekeeper, small tortoiseshell and comma. Dragonflies and damselflies will also be out, with southern and migrant hawkers patrolling their feeding grounds and gatherings of common blue damselflies creating a dazzling

haze over the edges of Ivy Lake. The light trap will be attracting a wonderful variety of moths, for example angle shades, black arches and red underwing, especially if the nights are cloudy and warm. For your own glimpse of these and other creatures of the night, including bats, join us for a Walk on the Wild Side on Wednesday 31st August from 8pm until 9.30pm as we head out onto the reserve after dusk. Please telephone 01425 472760 to book your place. The Blashford Lakes Project is a partnership between Bournemouth Water, New Forest District Council and Wessex Water. The reserve is managed by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, a charity that aims to protect local wildlife and inspire people. For information on upcoming events visit our website: www. hiwwt.org.uk or phone: 01425 472760. For up-to-date wildlife information visit our blog: blashfordlakes.wordpress.com.

Welcome L

Dear Readers, ike many baby boomers out there, cycling has become one of our favourite leisure activities now our children have flown the nest (hopefully permanently!) In fact a perfect hobby for railway buffs and cycling enthusiasts like my husband who combines the two searching out many of the lines, which were closed in the ‘60s and have now become leisure trails. We are very lucky to have the Castleman Trailway running almost past our door which is a lovely mostly traffic free route from Ringwood through the countryside and into East Dorset where it terminates at Upton Park. Upton House is featured on our front cover. A great location to end a morning’s bike ride. In fact I have just googled

with best wishes,

Contents it and it seems to be a great place for a day out for everyone. It now has over 200 acres of parkland on the shores of Holes bay and all sorts of activities for the children plus the Tea Rooms of course! So whilst the children are amusing themselves on one of the many activities there, a few holiday reads which you might enjoy are reviewed on page 6! If you’ve left your husband at home to sort out one of those longstanding jobs - then our ‘Local Business Directory’ on page 38 might come in very useful to save the day - not to mention the stress of course! Finally, if you would like more members in your club or society, and/or would like us to publish your news, articles or future events, then simply e-mail the details to: info@roundaboutmags.co.uk.

Holiday Reads For many of us, the best thing about a holiday is the opportunity to get lost in a book, without feeling guilty about unread emails, dirty dishes or the other 1001 daily chores that rudely interrupt our reading. If you’re looking for a novel to get lost in, we have plenty to recommend.

Magruder’s Curiosity Cabinet – H.P. Wood In 1904, the tavern beneath Magruder’s Curiosity Cabinet has become a haven for the many ‘unusuals’ who call Coney Island their home. There’s Rosalind, who’s as likely to wear a suit as a dress, Zeph, who lost both his legs in a childhood accident, eight year old P-Ray, who never speaks and collects fleas, and any other number of characters. After finding herself alone and penniless, Kitty Hayward finds solace at Magruder’s, but her peace may well be short-lived. Anarchy is in the air, and the plague is sweeping through the streets. These characters will stay with you long after your holiday is over. The Last of Us – Rob Ewing On a remote Scottish island, a pandemic has killed most of the population. There are no adults left. Just five children, trying to survive on the tinned food they find in neighbouring houses. There’s Rona, the narrator, along with little Alex and their leader, Elizabeth, who makes sure they brush their teeth and carry on with their school lessons. And then there’s Calum Ian

and Duncan, who are starting to resent Elizabeth’s authority. A beautiful, heart-wrenching story. Dear Amy – Helen Callaghan When a newspaper agony aunt receives a letter claiming to be from a kidnapped girl, she assumes at first it’s a hoax. After all, Bethany Avery has been missing for years. But then more letters arrive, seemingly with information only the girl could know. Throw into the mix another recent abduction, and you have an enjoyable psychological thriller with plenty of twists and turns, a great storyline and appealing characters. Woman on the Edge of Time – Marge Piercy It’s been four decades since the release of this classic feminist dystopian novel, yet the writing still feels just as original and relevant. Wife and mother Connie Ramos has been branded as mentally unstable and now lives alone, ostracised by most of society. She starts escaping to a future, happier time – where equality is accepted as the norm. But Connie is also shown an alternative future, where women are little more than commodities. Which one becomes reality may be down to Connie herself. If you’ve never read it, or worse, were made to analyse it for an English Literature class, now is the time to pick up the 40th anniversary edition.

Fishbowl – Bradley Somer All of life’s highs and lows are played out in one apartment block by its many inhabitants. There’s ‘the Villain Connor Radley’, ‘the Evil Seductress Faye’, ‘Stoic Jimenez’ and agoraphobic ‘Clare the Shutin’, amongst others. And then there’s Ian – a humble goldfish, who’s about to take a plunge from the twentyseventh floor. In the four seconds it takes him to fall, he’ll discover more about the apartment’s inhabitants than perhaps they even know about themselves. Insightful, original and entertaining. Hitman Anders and the Meaning of It All – Jonas Jonasson After three stints in prison for murder, Hitman Anders decides to go straight. Well, less crooked anyway. An unlikely alliance between the hitman, a lapsed priest and a hotel receptionist see the trio embark on a trek across Sweden, lying, cheating and swindling as they go. A great novel to escape into for fans of dark humour, it’s possibly best suited to villa holidays, or other locations where holidaymakers won’t get annoyed at your snorts of laughter.

Because of basic incompatability with ‘crude mechanicals’, those hi-tech vehicles will be using priority roads and expressways which allow ‘platooning’, relegating ‘crude mechanicals’ to the slow routes. Here is a scenario for 2030......

My interactive TV tells me that British Rail have today announced the closure of the last branch line for conversion to Expressway. My son calls Uber on his think-phone (a wearable device recently introduced by Banana to read your thoughts and take appropriate action) and a share-minibus arrives to take him to work, free. I go to my Pod and ask to go to my destination. It responds that Expressway entry points have been booked for me, please be patient. After 39 minutes the Pod decides to join the main road, then a further 16 minutes to join the Expressway platoon to Manchester. Portrait of a Local Artist A father’s skill as an artist inspired his son to follow in his footsteps.

“It’s simple as that,” says Andrew Halliday from Lymington, who often visits the coast near Christchurch and is particularly fond of Highcliffe Castle. “I hope to visit soon to create a new body of work including the grand and romantic Victorian building that resides there.” Andrew had always had a fascination for painting and drawing - the home was full of his dad’s pictures, some abstract, others allegorical and mythological. “Dad’s talent drew me in, and I found that the school art department, which was basically a collection of pencils and paper, was just not good enough for me. The decision to follow art seemed natural to me and I wasn’t good at anything else anyway.” Andrew first studied seriously at Bourneville School of Art where he was taught to draw properly by teacher and artist Terrence Clarke. “My BA degree had woeful support to prepare me, or indeed others on the course, for life as a pro,” reveals Andrew. “This has been a lifelong process and I’m still learning!” A highlight of Andrew’s early career was being invited to study at Amsterdam’s prestigious Rijksakademie, a premier school that has great international respect. There he mixed with many professional artists from all over the world and enjoyed living in a beautiful and richly historical city. “My present painting focuses on architecture and how we interact with it. Ten years ago I was greatly influenced by the Edward Hopper retrospective at Tate Modern and my goals in painting became clearer, more focused. Hopper was fascinated with the inner worlds of the people who inhabited the lobbies, squares and avenues of his cityscapes. I like to look instead outward, at how the physical world can illustrate the thoughts within us. I currently have work on show at the Riverside Gallery in Barnes, a part of London in which I used to live and work.” www.andrewhallidayfineart.co.uk

Viewed From My W indow A small selection of short stories written by Patricia Oliver from Horton near Wimborne, describing the ups and downs of caring for feral cats over the years with photos by J Santana-Martin.

S

Sooty Part 2: Seeing Double & Triple!

ooty, the new black cat we eventually managed to catch after being concerned for the appearance of his coat and his weight loss, had his castration which was paid for by the RSPCA. I expected to have a large bill for either dental treatment, antibiotics or blood tests to determine the cause of his weight loss and when the Vet gave him a clean bill of health with nothing further to pay - I was surprised. I took him home and placed him in the large cage we have for the purpose. I was still concerned for his skin condition and decided to give him a good shampoo and try and clean him up a bit. This was a feral cat and I was uncertain as to his reaction to such treatment, but he was as good as gold and did not even flinch. I then gave him a flea and worm treatment, a good brush, a stroke and a cuddle and held him in my arms. He loved every minute of it and certainly did not complain, instead he was purring. We kept him for a few days in the big cage and gave him lots of attention, but then decided he was fit and well, washed and brushed, de-flea’d and wormed, there was really no reason to keep him caged any longer and we let him go. At first we kept an eye on him through the security camera, then he started to come regularly to the back door and even into the kitchen for food and would eat 41/2 packets of food at any one time. He was now very friendly and decided to move into the house with some of the other cats. He is so much at home, playing with toys like a kitten and teasing the other cats. We no longer have to call him in, he is no longer feral, just a house cat that goes out from time to time on a hunting trip or just to walk around. Now I have another lap cat. Tammy used to sit on my lap, but was ousted by Henry, but he has now been ousted

by my three legged friend Billy, although he is so big he just leans his head on my lap. But then Chloe wants to sit on my lap and when Jason decides to come in, he thinks he can sit on my lap as well. It is a good thing there is just room for two and a half felines, although Chloe often has to sit across my chest and on to my shoulder, but now Sooty wants his turn. It all gets a bit crowded and those that are pushed further away I still have to reach over and stroke! Occasionally someone gets cross and lashed out and everyone moves off in a flurry, but not for long and it all starts again. When we managed to isolate Sooty into the barn to try and catch him I noticed another black cat in the car park and at first I thought Sooty had escaped, but I have now seen all three of them, Blackie, Sooty and this new feral cat, who may of course be related to Sooty. I decide to call this new cat Jazz, don’t ask me why, it was just a name that came to me. Jazz is larger than Sooty, a lovely shiny coat, definitely a male and also very timid. He looks well and is well fed, so we shall leave him in peace to come and go as he pleases keeping an eye on him through the ‘spy-cam’. We do see him sometimes in the greenhouse, but he is still very timid and runs and hides behind a large pot housing a tree. The full story and many more are in the book “Viewed From My Window” by Patricia Oliver price £15.00 + £2.50 p&p. For more details, contact Patricia on 01202 826244. Any proceeds go towards the Veterinary and Welfare needs of the 16 feral cats currently in her care.

Far From The Madding Crowds Gadgets for going off the beaten track

F

or many people, late summer is the perfect time to go off the beaten track and explore, whether that’s by hiking, cycling or a combination of the two. And with the right gadgets you can be sure that you’ll love to go a-wandering, no matter where you’re headed. If you like to listen to music, podcasts or ebooks when you’re roaming, or if you just fancy some music while you swim in a lake, waterproof headphones are a great idea: sets such as the X-1 Surge Mini (£35) are 100% waterproof to a X-1 Surge Mini depth of 12 feet, but don’t forget to headphones buy a waterproof case for your iPod or phone: you can pick up a universal waterproof case for less than £10, although make sure you check the specs carefully: water resistant and waterproof are very different things, and the former is only designed to protect your device against accidents, not deliberately going underwater. If you’d rather drink water than swim in it, a refillable water bottle is a great investment. £14 gets you the leak-proof,

Memobottle A5 water bottle

durable Kleen Kanteen, while the £6 Snugpak is designed to be clipped to your backpack. If you’re on a city trip with a messenger bag, the Memobottle (around £22) is shaped like a book rather than a bottle so it won’t make your bag all bulky. And of course, don’t forget the humble Thermos (from around £8), which is as good at keeping soup warm as it is at keeping water cool - a useful skill given the vagaries of the British weather. If you have fond memories of the Swiss Army Knife you might be interested to see its latest incarnation, the Victorinox Expedition Kit. At £135 it’s a lot of money for a knife, but then it’s a lot

Victorinox Expedition Kit of knife for the money: not only does it have the usual blades and screwdrivers but it also includes a digital clock, a barometer, a compass, an altimeter and a thermometer. And of course you never know when you might need to get a stone out of a horse’s hoof. If you’d rather take even more technology

with you, the Earl Backcountry Survival Tablet ($299, around £205) will start shipping in the second half of 2016 after smashing its fundraising target on Kickstarter. It’s an Android-based, ruggedised tablet with GPS, weather sensors and radio communication to ensure that you always know where you are and what’s coming, and that you’re never out of contact with the outside world. It’s a bit of an overkill for a walk round a park, but for more serious expeditions it could be a very valuable travelling companion. The use of an E-Ink screen and a built-in solar panel means it should last for ages too, although unfortunately E-Ink’s slower updating does rule out a game of Angry Birds after the day’s travelling is over. If it’s even half as good as the Kickstarter campaign promises it could be really clever. Fancy a tent that’s as techy as a tablet? The Heimplanet Cave inflates like an airbed, weighs just 5 kg and looks like it came from a spaceship. At £480 it’s a little on the expensive side, but the structure is punctureproof and it’s actually quite affordable by inflatable tent standards. Heimplanet Cave Tent

n response to the plight of people in and around Wimborne without a Saturday bus which was highlighted in the press; we launched our Saturday Mini coach service at the end of May picking people up and taking them in to Wimborne and Ferndown Town Centre.

The service will run as a pilot for 6 months on a Saturday and subject to demand may be continued in areas where there are no services running. We can pick people up from Sturminster Marshall, Shapwick, Pamphill, (Isolated areas of Colehill), Holt and Gaunt’s Common and Ameysford. We will consider requests from other nearby East Dorset villages, provided that they are not served by local buses. People will be picked up at or near to their homes; our bus is wheelchair accessible as we specialise in helping people with mobility problems. People will have to pay to use the bus which will cover the cost of providing the

What Price for Brand Snobbery?

Mike's Motors

By Mike Wattam

W

hat makes a ‘premium’ small car? A question many car makers are asking themselves as pressure grows for swingeing reductions in exhaust emissions over an impossibly tight time-scale. Gee, this will save the whole world all on its own! Thinking premium, German badges such as Mercedes, BMW and Audi are at the forefront of our minds for some obscure reason, but can they actually hack it? Here is the Audi A1 - a car which won the European car of the year award a few years ago. In this case, a 3-door with diesel 1.6 engine coupled to a 6 speed manual gearbox. Yes, it does have a newer and cleaner iteration of the engine which led Volkswagen into a huge emissions test cheating scandal! On paper it certainly sounds like the right formula for driving enjoyment and ecoenlightenment. In the metal the car seems bigger than it is, with a somewhat intimidating front grille for the rear view mirrors you are following. The paint finish is excellent, as is the panel fit - while the unadventurous styling doesn’t give a particularly balanced look. Open a door and a slight leather smell is noticed, then nicely detailed facia, instruments and driving controls

- a good first impression. Start it up and a strong diesel clatter ensues, subsiding somewhat as it gets hot. However at all times it continued to hammer home that it is just a Volkswagen in rented Versace clobber, Cinderella. I was very surprised to find the hatch would only swallow one medium suitcase, madam’s overnight bag and my trusty laptop - any more involved removing the rear parcel shelf and exposing all to view. Not impressed. Front seat adjustment was through a wide range initially, although I spent most of my driving time in this car continually adjusting the drivers’ seat in a fruitless search for comfort. Access to the rear in this 3-door version is abysmal and then with small seats hardly well packaged, the five-door version giving only slightly easier access. I also kept banging my head on the heavily-sloped ‘A’ post as I got in and out and mused that Mini, Peugeot 208, Vauxhall Adam and even Kia Rio are very much more acceptable both in the boot and

Audi A1 interior

for passengers, yet multiple thousands cheaper. Hardly a tour-de-force, clearly Volkswagen have missed a trick here. To drive, the picture is better. The lusty - although coarse - engine is very capable, the gear-change light and precise, and accurately placing the car on the road is a breeze. All this is rather spoilt by the poor driving position, an annoyingly un-resolved lumpy ride and a multiplicity of controls which are both confusingly situated, and difficult to understand. As the driver becomes more familiar with the car, these traits should be less noticeable. In short, the typical Audi DNA is evident - a well-specified and nicely finished car that remains under-developed, poorly packaged and uninvolving. This car may well suit a nonenthusiast seeking a commuting car and who loves ‘brand snobbery’. I’d suggest forgetting the noisy diesel and adopt the more modern and still economical small petrol turbo ‘three’. Finally, my car decided to play up by randomly resetting itself to metric French, then giving dire warnings about ‘No Oil!’. A call to Audi Assistance proved fruitless and at this point with the assistance of a passing Frenchman we managed to reset the computer and find some oil for the almost empty sump. In short, not on my driveway, thank you!

To Dye Or Not To Dye? by Kate McLelland

I

young fashion icons such as Rihanna and Zayn Malik are now sporting faux grey styles as part of a growing fashion trend.

grey is the neW black If you are female, you may feel under greater pressure to keep up a youthful appearance. While women are often described as being ‘brave’ for going grey, men of the same age are given the flattering label of ‘silver fox’. But this situation may be about to change, as hip,

Why more of us are refusing to dye It’s ironic that as young celebrities and their fans adopt grey hair as a fashion statement, an increasing number of older people are choosing not to use hair colourants. While there is no single cause for this trend, there are several reasons why the number of cheerleaders for being ‘grey and proud’ may be on the rise. Is hair dye harmful? Scare stories about the dangers posed by certain chemicals have continued to surface, despite a major re-think by manufacturers in the 1980s, when research revealed that substances used in hair dye at that time caused cancer in mice. Although no concrete evidence has yet been found to suggest that hair dyes are unsafe for regular personal use, the jury is still out on the risks faced by today’s consumers. Even that tiny seed of doubt may be enough to persuade some people to stop using colourants.

t’s a dilemma faced by most people of ‘a certain age’: let your hair go grey, or reach for the dye bottle?

Why We go grey Our natural hair colour comes from a pigment known as melanin, produced by the hair follicles. As we age the follicles produce less melanin and this means our hair effectively loses its colour. The average person will spot their first grey hair in their 30s and most people will have noticeable grey strands by their 40s. By the age of fifty, fifty per cent of people will have gone grey. The thickness of hair also alters as you age because the size of your hair follicles shrinks, producing smaller hairs. In the same way the oil glands in the human scalp shrink with age, resulting in brittleness and dryness.

We can’t turn back the clock As we age, our skin colour alters, picking up more yellow tones. This means that the hair shade we had in our younger days may not blend with our current skin tone. Combine this with the effects of chemical overload on aging hair and it’s no wonder that many of us decide it’s better to let nature take its course. Role models lead the way These days we’re surrounded by high profile figures sporting grey hairstyles – think of male celebritiess such as Gary Lineker, José Mourinho and George Clooney and female high rollers like Anna Wintour, Meryl Streep and Christine Lagarde. Nowadays we are all living longer, in better health, and it may simply be that the trend towards accepting grey hair shows we are more relaxed about the aging process, living life to the full instead of hiding away. To quote celebrity hairstylist and founder of Twitter’s @ thegreyglammovement, Cynthia Alvarez: “Grey is the new black. The colour has taken on an entirely new life and meaning – today grey is beautiful, sexy, chic, fabulous!”

Wimborne and Ferndown Lions

N

It’s a wet Saturday, let’s get plastered!

ot what you might think, this was what runners felt at the Wimborne and Ferndown Lions’ Muddy Fun Run. This was a run over a 5K obstacle course held at Homelands Farm, Three Legged Cross on the 21st of May. Despite, or maybe because of, the awful weather, the runners really got stuck in, as the pictures show. The feedback says it all. “To all the Lions who provided their time and skills, can I say thank you very much indeed for all your hard work.” “The clear labelling of the course could put some established Obstacle Course Races to shame. I am sure next year the attendance will be significantly higher.” “Great run, thank you to the organisers and volunteers. We had a great time with lots of laughter, really looking forward to the next one.” The event was held to raise funds for the Wessex Cancer Trust and the JTYAF. (John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation) Save the date for the next time –20th May 2017.

New Delhi By Solange Hando

N

ew Delhi takes you by surprise, an almost European city with all the exotic colours of India but a world away from the hustle and bustle of Old Delhi and much of the country. As a final gift from the British Empire, it’s a pleasant city of tree lined avenues and stunning vistas with elegant buildings, vast open spaces and a fair share of museums and historic sites. In December 1911, the British had announced that India’s capital, then in Calcutta, would return to Delhi, a more central location where a new city would be built, worthy of the Raj. King George V laid the foundation stone but controversy raged for almost two years, plagued by bad omens and a difficult choice of site. Work was finally handed over to top English architect Edwin Lutyens, renowned for his extravagance. Lutyens was seconded by Herbert Baker and though the two men often disagreed, they designed a grand capital in ‘imperial style’, spacious, symmetrical, with a few elements of Indian architecture to pay tribute to local tradition. It took 20 years to complete. In a prime location on Raisana Hill, the President’s

Residence, formerly the Viceroy’s House, rises above the city in near grandiose isolation. Built with 700 million bricks, it claims vast interior courtyards and over 350 rooms, is larger than Versailles, and has a subtle mix of East and West. There are stone elephants and classical columns, Indian bells, a copper dome and a Jaipur column carved with oak leaves and topped with a lotus. Other government venues include Baker’s secretarial buildings and the circular Parliament House, 173 metres around, enclosed by colonnaded verandas. There, independence was hailed by a bugler in 1947 and the new constitution was drafted. From Raisina Hill, the ceremonial Rajpath, or King’s Way, leads through Lutyens’ great plaza to the massive sandstone arch of India gate. Rising 42 metres above the ground, India’s national monument commemorates those who died in the British Indian army and guards the eternal flame. The Rajpath is at the heart of celebrations on Republic Day but with its water features, trees and lawns, it’s always a favourite haunt of tourists and locals. The canopy which sheltered a statue of George V is now

empty, but chipmunks run across the grass, children splash in the boating lake and stalls sell candyfloss, coconuts and ice cream. It’s a great place to stroll in the cool of the evening when India Gate stands all lit up against the darkening sky. Not so far away, the great sweep of Connaught Place showcases a fine Georgian style reminiscent of the Royal Crescent in Bath. Designed by Robert Tor Russell, a lesser known yet prolific architect, it’s the capital’s top commercial hub with three concentric circles of shops opening on colonnaded arcades and roads radiating in every direction, busiest of all the famous Janpath. The area has shopping venues for everyone, from pavement stalls to luxury outlets. There are cotton shirts and pashmina shawls, raw silk and cashmere, carpets, antiques, costume jewellery and tribal craft. The central park hosts cultural events while all around, food stalls and restaurants serve a wide variety of cuisines from India and beyond. After a challenging tour of the ‘real India’, it’s the perfect place to bargain for those last minute souvenirs before heading home.

Looking for a Forever Home

A

t any one time Waggy Tails Rescue have dogs that are difficult to re home for no other reason than they are elderly. You may not realise that the charity offers a long term foster scheme for those willing to take on one of these old timers. Below are some of the oldies looking for a home.

Teddy

Nellie

I’m Teddy, a 14 yr old Jack Russell. I’m a bit of a cheeky chappie, very alert and interested in my surroundings. I really love going for walks at a sedate pace and I also love my food. My ideal human companion would be elderly like myself, so that we could grow old together. No other dogs please. My name is Fergus and I’m a Jack Russell. I’m really looking for someone who will love me as much as my last human who sadly passed away. I am now 9 years old so I’m a bit set in my ways. I’m Nellie, a Red Setter and an old lady. I am 10 years old I think but could be a little older I’m not really sure! I have a loving and sweet nature, love to go out for a gentle stroll and a sniff but will also happily plod round the garden. No other dogs please.

The Life List Unwritten Rules Adult life is complicated. School may have taught us about quadratic equations, Pythagoras, and coping with a broken heart, but there are areas of expertise where we are still in the dark. How long does one keep the box for an electrical appliance or an electronic device? I’m running out of attic space. What’s the optimum number of toys for a pet dog? How many does it really need and is there one I can accidentally stand on without injury? At what age should a man start wearing patterned socks in an unironic way? (I’ve

finally accepted the no ‘socks with sandals’ ruling.) When is the best time to develop an interest in historical TV dramas? Does it usually coincide with the desire to make up a cheeseboard? How old is too old for expecting or receiving Easter eggs? How long should one wait after Christmas before putting unwanted gifts on eBay or donating them to a charity shop 20 miles away? What are the social repercussions of unfriending someone on social media, who you also know in the real world, due to their constant stream of upbeat platitudes? How does one tackle a neighbour’s cat that persists in seeing your prize flowerbeds as a latrine? Are there any guidelines for flatulence in enclosed spaces - a lift, a canal boat, a small car, a pod on the London Eye, etc.? How does one respond to work collections for people you barely know, or who you know too well to want to contribute? By Derek Thompson www.alongthewritelines.blogspot.co.uk
