Dear Readers,

month from today as I write, it will be Midsummer’s Day so the nights will be drawing in very shortly! So is it just me or has it been a colder and drier spring than usual - windier too? We had a pleasant country walk around Breamore a week or so ago and noticed that the fields were already pretty dry and cracked. So no doubt all you gardeners will be hoping for a decent amount of rain very shortly - but before the school holidays please! This issue’s cover reminds us just how lovely the summer dawn in June can be and it also seems to have been the most important month in the calendar for thousands of years in the UK. The 5000 year old Neolithic monument of Stonehenge is the obvious midsummer icon especially on Midsummer’s Day! But June was also very important

with best wishes,

for the Romans, Anglo Saxons and also the month for many other momentus occasions. Signing of the Magna Carta, Battle of Waterloo, the Queen’s Coronation and D-Day to name but a few. The article on page 40 tells us more. Even if June remains dry we can always look forward to a wet early July - because it’s Wimbledon week of course and page 32 gives us a few facts and figures with a fascinating potted history of tennis. For more information on local events around your local countryside check out our What’s On pages 26 and 28 or our website. ROUNDABOUT

ROUNDABOUT VERWOOD RINGWOOD & FORDINGBRIDGE

PAST and PRESENT Verwood Carnival

1946

V

erwood carnival was started in 1929 by the then Vicar’s wife, Mrs Jeayes and a group of friends, to replace the annual fair held on Church Hill which had lapsed after 1925. Rev. Wilfrid Arthur Jeayes was the incumbent from 1927 until his early death in 1934 at the age of 45 after an operation in London that tragically went wrong.

The photo above taken in 1946 shows the Royal float heading the first PostWorld War Two Carnival procession along Ringwood Road. The Carnival Queen was Daphne Sims with attendants Brenda Shearing and Doris Mills facing backwards. Facing forwards are Peggy Reeks on the left and Jean Penny on the right with Ernie Young driving. Amazingly in 2017 and 71 years later nothing much had changed! The Royal float could even have been pulled by the same beautifully preserved tractor and trailer!

The Carnival was suspended during the war years but reinstated in 1946 and continues as an annual event on the late May Bank Holiday Monday.

Budget Friendly Family Fun!

Parenting

Have fun with the kids this summer, without breaking the bank. Kids Pass Kids Pass gives you 40% off cinema tickets and money off a range of restaurants and days out. You can even get discounts on holidays with Haven, Butlins, Eurocamp and other companies. The pass costs around £40 a year, but a month’s trial costs just £1. Think small Check whether your local amateur dramatics society is performing any plays suitable for families. Smaller venues are a lot cheaper than wellknown theatres and young children really won’t care if an actor is an award-winning thespian or Mark from the corner shop. Older kids could even join the drama youth group. Don’t discount larger theatres altogether, however, as some offer discounts during the summer holidays. Children can attend a host of London shows for free during August’s Kids Week, as long as they’re accompanied by a paying adult – see www. officiallondontheatre.com/ kids-week. Party time Clubbing together with other parents can help to keep costs down. Having a kids’ party at a soft-play centre,

theme park, pottery barn or other activity centre often costs less per head than buying the activity and food separately for each child. Use PayPal’s Money Pools to collect the money from everyone. DIY A trip to a pottery workshop usually costs upwards of £10 a child, but if you buy the paints and pots online you can get that down to around £3 or £4 per child. Likewise, a home tie dye kit costs less than £15, which gives you enough dye for around ten children’s T-shirts. Fabric pens are even cheaper (and less messy). Try eBay for kits, T-shirts and other items to dye, such as cotton bags or pillow cases. Bulk buy with other parents to save money. Cheap days out Keep an eye on social media and www.familiesonline.co.uk for cheap days out. Libraries

Keep an eye on social media for cheap days out and councils sometimes organise holiday activities,

such as storytelling and crafts. Country fairs often have lots on for kids and entrance is often free for under-16s as long as they’re accompanied by a paying adult. (Tickets are usually cheaper if they’re bought in advance.) For less than £15 for one adult and four children, you could enjoy a day out with aerobatics displays, ferret racing, motocross displays, puppet shows and more. Just remember to pack a cool bag with a picnic and ice pops, otherwise you’ll spend a small fortune on hotdogs, chips and ice-cream. Cashback Cashback sites such as Quidco and Topcashback give you money back every time you buy something online from one of their retail partners. They also offer discounts. When we checked, Quidco was advertising a fourteen-day Walt Disney pass for the price of seven days, and money off various flights. If you register your credit and debit cards with Quidco, you can also earn money when you shop on the high street, whether you’re buying kids’ clothes or treating the family to lunch out. Driverless Cars Explained

Motoring

D

riverless cars are a hot motoring topic, with manufacturers, politicians and transport chiefs all talking about them. But what are they, and what do they mean for the future of motoring? The Government predicts that driverless cars could be in full use on the UK’s roads by 2021. Are they safe? The safety of autonomous vehicles was questioned after a woman was killed while crossing the road in front of a self-driving vehicle in Arizona. The issue is the co-habitation of road users and the driverless vehicles – until people are sure how to interact with them, accidents will still happen. Which manufacturers currently offer some level of autonomous assistance? You’ll find some partial selfdriving technology in cars from Audi, BMW, Citroen, DS, Fiat, Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Jaguar, Kia, Land Rover, Lexus, Mazda, Mercedes, Nissan, Peugeot, Porsche, Renault, Seat, Skoda, Subaru, Suzuki, Tesla, Toyota, Vauxhall, Volkswagen and Volvo. Most cars do incorporate the technology, but it can include features such as adaptive cruise control. Levels of autonomy The various levels of

autonomous assistance are categorised from one to five. Here’s what they mean. Level 1 Introduced around 1990s/00s This base level means that just one element of the driving process is taken over by the car – but the driver is still very much in charge. This level of assistance is mature now and was pioneered by early cruise control systems. Level 2 Present day Level 2 autonomy represents pretty much where we are today. Computers can deal with multiple functions, so the car can take control of steering, throttle and brake functions – but the driver must show they’re in charge of the car by putting a hand on the steering wheel. Level 3 Estimated 2020 At level 3 all of the safetycritical functions can be controlled by the car, but the driver must still be able to intervene if necessary – this isn’t completely ‘hands-off’ technology yet. Level 4 Mid 2020s Level 4 sees cars capable of being fully autonomous, albeit in selected areas – most likely inner-city ones. Dedicated lane markings and infrastructure will be required to ensure that the

cars keep on the straight and narrow too. Complex mapping systems will combine with advanced cameras, sensors and artificial intelligence to determine where the car should go. The driver may have to intervene at certain points, but for the most part it’ll mean hands-free driving. Level 5 Late 2020s/early 2030s Level 5 will see the vehicles derestricted – they will be capable of driving anywhere, without the need for a driver. There won’t be a need for a steering wheel or traditional ‘controls’; these vehicles will be fully capable of operating themselves. It’ll free up space inside the cars, so they’ll probably look more like lounges on wheels. That’s what we predict, anyway. Timeline predictions This timeline is based on predictions by many different manufacturers, though most agree that the bulk of progress will happen between 2020 and 2030. It’s a real technology race at the moment – each company is attempting to develop their own systems quicker than the rest. It’s why these dates are estimations – some may get there sooner than others. James Baggott

e are in the middle of summer and the reserve is full of life. The insect world is buzzing, the leaves on the trees are still fresh and our young birds are embarking on their first flights away from the nest. From the water’s edge to the woodland canopy, this year’s young will be fledging and gaining independence. The air will continue to be full of birdsong with many birds singing throughout June as their mates produce a second brood. On the shoreline of Ibsley Water Oystercatcher, Lapwing and Little Ringed Plover chicks will be venturing further from their parents whilst foraging on the shoreline for food. On Ivy Lake the Common Tern chicks will be taking their first leap away from the comfort of their nest, whilst the Great Crested Grebe chicks with their black and white humbug faces are now too big to catch a ride on their parent’s back. best viewed on a sunny day, with the meadow and the pond behind the Education Centre both fabulous places to just sit and be still. Red Admiral, Peacock, Comma and Speckled Wood butterflies are all plentiful and in the meadow the summery sound of chirruping crickets and grasshoppers will delight your ears. On Saturday 6th July from 10am until 11.30am you can join the Education Officer to ‘Catch the Bug’ and discover the miniature world of the grasshoppers, crickets, spiders and bugs that inhabit our meadow. Please book by telephoning 01425 472760. The mixture of wetland, woodland and grassland makes the reserve a brilliant place for dragonflies and damselflies, with Brown Hawker, Common Darter, Emperor and Black Tailed Skimmer dragonflies all on the wing along with Common Blue and Azure Blue damselflies. in which to hunt as an adult. We are often asked how to tell dragonflies and damselflies apart: the best way is to wait until they are sitting still or perched on vegetation, as damselflies tend to hold their wings over their bodies whilst dragonflies will rest with them stretched out to the side. Closer to the ground, keep an eye out for Grass snakes basking on the alder logs and stumps outside Ivy South Hide or on the fallen trees on the edge of Ivy Silt Pond. The Blashford Lakes Project is a partnership between Bournemouth Water, New Forest District Council and Wessex Water. The reserve is managed by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, a charity that aims to protect local wildlife and inspire people. Richard III visits Brownsea Island!

rownsea Open Air Theatre’s compelling production of Shakespeare’s Richard III promises to be a memorable experience for audiences this summer. The military skills of Richard, Duke of Gloucester, have helped to put his elder brother, Edward, on the throne. However, jealousy and resentment cause Richard to seek the throne for himself, using deception, manipulation and multiple murders to achieve his goal. Through a series of twists and turns his plotting soon has tumultuous consequences, both for himself and for England… This breath-taking production has plenty of stunning and unexpected effects that will keep audiences gripped throughout the evening. A

powerful and very experienced cast, lead by Tim Fearon, as the charismatic Richard, brings the highest quality theatrical experience to Dorset this summer. The magic of the evening begins as soon as you embark on the ferry trip from Poole Harbour to Brownsea island. Regular patrons relish the opportunity to picnic in idyllic surroundings whilst catching glimpses of the island wildlife – red squirrels, deer and peacocks. The professional raked auditorium provides excellent views from every seat and audiences are soon caught up in the drama that unfolds. At the end of the performance your journey home under the stars is a fitting close to a wonderful evening.

HYPOPRESSIVES

Helping to improve the symptoms of urinary incontinence, back pain or pelvic organ prolapse.

M

ost traditional exercise techniques are HYPERpressive - they increase internal pressure. However, sometimes pressure from injury, over training, or having a baby may lead to urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse. Hypopressive exercises reduce internal pressure to the thoracic, abdominal, and pelvic areas of the body. Hypopressives, can be beneficial for everyone, because they are about retraining your core muscles to work as

they were designed to. They can be particularly helpful for people who suffer from urinary incontinence, poor pos-

ture and back pain, sexual dysfunction or pelvic prolapse.

Hypopressive training is undertaken in a 1:1 session lasting up to 1 hour depending upon each client (£40). Around 6 sessions may be needed to learn the choreography and breathing technique. Personal home practice is an essential part of gaining full benefits from the method.

Pam Reeks B.E.M. - A tribute to one of a kind! Pamela Reeks B.E.M. 22 July 1936 – 5 November 2018 Pam left her mark on everything she was involved with and well known and loved by everyone she met. Verwood was her home from the age of 12 where she chose to become deeply immersed in the history of the area and its people. She was the author or co-author of several books including‘Verwood – Village Days’ and ‘A brief History of Verwood’ and encouraged others to follow an interest in history, local and family. Her genuine interest in people and enthusiasm for the projects she was involved in will be greatly missed . Dorset History Pam was a founder member of Dorset Family History Society and also a founder member of the Verwood Historical Society and Archivist and Trustee of the Verwood Heathland Heritage Centre. Many say the Centre would not have come into being or continued to exist without Pam’s tireless devotion.

Mr Ron Reeks (L) presents the cheque from funeral donations to Mr Gordon Thorne (R), Chairman of the Trustees at Verwood Heathland Heritage Centre.

Genealogy Pam’s interests in genealogy led to her carrying out detailed research on local families and a visit from strangers from overseas was not uncommon as they came to seek her knowledge and insights concerning their UK families. She was a great supporter of DFHS and many came to know of her wit, generally gentle but sometimes with a little barb and a twinkle in her eye. She was very knowledgeable but wore her learning lightly. Verwood Concert Brass Another of Pam’s passions alongside history was music. She was church organist at the age of 16, trained as a teacher and then taught the subject at school becoming a very popular 1st school teacher at Hillside. Pam also played 2nd Horn and conducted and nurtured the Training Band. Recently at the Verwood Concert Brass AGM in April the organisation was honoured to

Band Chairperson Helen Dunning receiving the funeral donations cheque from Pam’s husband Ron.

have Pam’s husband, Ron attend and present Verwood Concert Brass with its share of the donations made by those attending Pam’s funeral or simply wished to make a contribution in memory of, and in respect for her. Helen Dunnings, Chairperson of Verwood Concert Brass, who was presented with the cheque by Ron for over £1,100 said “We are very humbled and grateful to receive a cheque for this substantial amount of money. This donation will certainly be put to very good use in supporting Verwood Concert Brass in continuing to provide this community service which Pam was so very passionate about”. Verwood Concert Brass has grown over the years from having one brass band of 26 players to a total of approximately 100 players currently. Pam played no small part in making this happen and in recognition of her hard work and dedication she put in, a number of years ago she was awarded the honoured position of President of Verwood Concert Brass. Pam Reeks Memorial Concert Sunday 22nd September 2019 3pm – 5pm at the Verwood Hub where tickets are available free of charge. Due to everything Pam did for Verwood Concert Brass and indeed Verwood as a whole, it felt only right that Verwood Concert Brass should hold a Memorial Concert in her memory. Details on the Verwood Concert Brass website, Facebook page or Verwood Hub events programme. “Services to the Community”. Her tireless service to the community and supporter of so many local events was recognised by the town when she was made a Freeman of Verwood in 2012 and in 2014 Pam was awarded the British Empire Medal for “services to the community”. You can learn more about Pam by consulting Google under her name or Verwood.

Anyone for Tennis?

Special Feature

With Wimbledon Fortnight upon us, taking place from 1st-14th July, here are some fascinating facts about the prestigious tennis tournament, starting with its history. The first Wimbledon Championship: “The All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club, Wimbledon, propose to hold a lawn tennis meeting, open to all amateurs, on Monday July 9th and following days,” said the advertisement in The Field on 9th June 1877. What it really meant, of course, was “open to all male amateurs.” Twenty two men paid a £1-1s (a guinea) entrance free and turned up, as required, with their own rackets and “shoes without heels.” A temporary three-plank stand seated 30 people, but the final was watched by a 200-strong crowd, who saw Spencer Gore become the first Wimbledon Champion, winning a silver cup and 12 guineas. Ironically, Gore only entered to raise money to buy a horsedrawn roller, believing “that anyone who has really played well at cricket, [real] tennis, or even rackets, will ever seriously give his attention to lawn tennis, beyond showing himself to be a promising player, is extremely doubtful; for in all probability the monotony of the game would choke him off before he had time to excel in it.”

The first Ladies’ Championship: The Ladies’ Singles Championship was introduced in 1884, along with Men’s Doubles. 13 entrants paid half the entrance fee of the men and competed for a silver flower basket (no guineas for them). Maud Watson beat her sister Lilian to become the first female Champion, and went on to win in 1885 too. The man who held a 111 year record: William Renshaw won the Men’s Singles title seven times in the 1880s – six of them in consecutive years. He didn’t defend his title in 1887 and was beaten in the last eight in 1888, but came back to win his seventh title the following year; a record unbroken until Pete Sampras won a seventh Championship in 2000. He also competed with his twin brother Ernest in the Doubles. They dominated the game and inspired a massive public interest in tennis and the Championship. Today… BBGs (Ball Boys and Girls): Approximately 250 BBGs, with an average age

of fifteen, take to the court every year, having trained since February. Girls weren’t allowed until 1977, and it took another three years for mixed teams to appear. The balls: Slazenger has been the Official Supplier of tennis balls to the Championships since 1902. Yellow balls were used for first time in 1986. 53,000 are used during the Championships and used balls are sold, at £2.50 per can of three, in aid of the Wimbledon Foundation. Anyone for tea? During the Championships, spectators eat their way through 166,055 portions of strawberries and cream and 76,603 ice creams, while quaffing 303,277 glasses of Pimm’s, 21,917 bottles of champagne, 117,507 pints of draught beer and lager, and 307,277 cups of tea and coffee. Watch the birdie: Rufus, a Harris Hawk, provides a year-round deterrent to local pigeons and flies the grounds for an hour each morning, before the gates open, during the Championships.

Holiday Reads Books to while away the summer evenings

Book Reviews

The Library of Lost and Found – Phaedra Patrick Librarian Martha Storm finds a book containing a dedication from her grandmother. But the dedication is dated several years after her grandmother supposedly died. The book sets Martha out on a quest that will rock her safe, predictable life and remind her of who she really is. A hugely enjoyable, warm hug of a book.

Internment – Samira Ahmed Set ‘15 minutes into the future’, Internment tells the story of 17-year-old Layla, who is sent to a Muslim-American internment camp in the middle of the Californian desert. Similar to the real JapaneseAmerican internment camps of World War II, this camp is a dangerous place to stand out. Layla’s parents want her to keep her head down and not attract the attention of

the vicious camp director. But Layla is prepared to risk her life for her freedom. A powerful page-turner about the price of turning a blind eye to bigotry.

A Boy and his Dog at the End of the World – C. A. Fletcher Griz is growing up in a postapocalyptic world where mass-infertility has decimated the human population. His community is tiny and life is difficult. When a stranger steals the family’s dog, Griz sets out to get her back, on a journey that will take him from his tiny island on the Outer Hebrides across Scotland and Northern England. Perfect for fans of The Road and Station’s Eleven. Stone Mothers – Erin Kelly Marianne is back in her home village, and desperate to keep a secret hidden that could destroy the life she’s built

over the last 30 years. A secret that ties her to her childhood sweetheart, Jesse, as well as the MP responsible for shutting down the local asylum. This chilling psychological tale is a slowburner but well worth sticking with. The Dollmaker – Nina Allan Andrew and Bramber start writing to each other because of their shared interest in dolls. As their friendship grows, Andrew decides to visit Bramber at the institution she calls home. Andrew and Bramber’s story is interspersed with tales written by another doll-lover, Ewa Chaplin, which Andrew reads on his journey. A beautiful, strange, multi-layered book you’ll want to keep reading long after the sun has gone down. Outlander – Diana Gabaldon If your idea of the perfect holiday is spending several days on a sun lounger with a good book, then the Outlander series could be just what you’re looking for. On a trip to the Scottish Highlands, Claire Randall steps through a circle of stones and finds herself transported from 1946 to 1743, where she’s taken prisoner by Scottish outlaws. The hit TV show is now into its fourth season and the books are even better.

Midsummer Meaning Summer solstice is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere Photograph Andrew Dunn www.andrewdunnphoto.com

History

T

he month of Wimbledon and Father’s Day; synonymous with freshly mown grass, the first Pimms and a sudden abundance of flowers,we welcome June as the beginning of summer. In Anglo-Saxon times, June was known as midsummer month or sera monath, meaning ‘dry month’. It also brought with it the big pagan celebration of the summer solstice – the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. It was the Romans who were responsible for giving the sixth month in their Roman and our Gregorian calendar its current name. Jun(e) is believed to be a shortened version of Junius - Latin for ‘sacred to Juno’. Juno was the wife of Jupiter and patron goddess of Rome. She was also the goddess of marriage and childbirth. The blessing she was said to bestow on couples who marry during this month has meant that June weddings remain popular to this day. In early Roman times, June had 29 days, but Emperor

Julius Caesar added an extra day, making it 30 days long. People born in June are said to be ruled by the planet Mercury, representing youth, and come under the zodiac signs of either Gemini (the twins) or Cancer (the crab). Scientific studies have claimed that June babies tend to be physically stronger and suffer less with mental illnesses than those born in any other month. June has three birthstones: the pearl, moonstone and the more obscure alexandrite. The birth flowers for this month are the rose and the honeysuckle. There is a saying in folklore that in June, summer doesn’t begin until the elderflower is in blossom. Apart from the summer solstice, other festivals that take place in June include well-dressing, where natural springs are honoured with elaborate decorations that include intricate mosaic-like pictures made using flowers, grasses, moss, seeds, bark and berries. Well-dressing is particularly popular across Derbyshire.

The many significant historical events that have happened in the month of June include: the signing of the Magna Carta on 15th June 1215; the infamous Battle of Waterloo on 18th June 1815; the Queen’s coronation on 2nd June 1953; and D-Day, on 6th June 1944. The month of June has long fascinated poets, artists and lyricists from Shakespeare to Rogers and Hammerstein. ‘Flaming June’ is a famous painting by Lord Frederick Leighton completed in 1895. Scottish poet Robert Burns also paid homage to the month in the first lines of his well-known poem ‘A Red Red Rose’. And there is no end of romantic ballads out there rhyming ‘June’ with ‘moon’. Believe it or not, June was a popular name for both boys and girls in the first part of the 20th century but over the last 40-50 years it has declined in favour in the UK. However, June has enjoyed a resurgence as a favourite girls’ name in the USA during the past decade. By Catherine Rose
