egardless of today’s widespread secularism, the spiritual outlook and religious experience don’t go away. People still feel awe, gratefulness, wonder, reverence, a conscience-driven demand to help others, something unexplained beyond words.
If you are not helped by the traditional answers about community, compassion, and what life’s all about, perhaps you instead need to find people who keep playing with and celebrating the questions.
The Unitarians. Together in community for our individual journeys of spirituality and faith.

Dear Readers,
mere thirty years ago in 1989 an unknown Oxford graduate and computer scientist came up with an idea which his bosses described as “Vague but exciting!” Initially called the Mesh by it’s inventor Tim Berners-Lee, it soon became known by today’s more familiar name the World Wide Web. Despite being relatively young it seems to have been with us forever. Recently when asked by a BBC journalist whether the overall impact of the web had been good, an upbeat answer was expected. Instead, gesturing to indicate an upward and then a downward curve, Sir Tim said that after a good first 15 years, things had turned bad and a “mid-course correction” was needed. His brilliant creation has grown into
with best wishes,
a troubled adolescent - and Sir Tim sees it as his personal mission to put the web back on the right track. Coincidentally in this issue we have a very relevant technology article on page 40 which may help you to avoid some of the current nasty internet scams. In particular the ‘Too good to be true’ £500 mountain bikes for sale at £50. My husband recently invested in one from a local shop and noticed £900 bikes on the web on sale at £90 so beware! So he’s all ready for spring, the clocks have gone forward and fingers crossed the wind and rain finally stops so we can all enjoy it! 2019 Fanfare for Spring is on Sat 18th May and is always a marvellous day on Ringwood’s social calendar so definitely a date for your diary!

ROUNDABOUT
ROUNDABOUT RINGWOOD RINGWOOD & FORDINGBRIDGE & SURROUNDING VILLAGES
NOW and THEN Article and photo kindly supplied by Mary Baldwin
Frampton’s Wine & Coffee Bar, High Street, Ringwood
T
hroughout the 20th cenc1950 tury Frampton & Sons was one of Ringwood’s best known shops. The current building with its distinct Dutch gables was erected in 1905 by brothers Harry and Bill Frampton, who ran their family business in partnership. Unlike previous generations of the family, neither lived over the shop; Harry lived in College Road and Bill in Star Lane. Harry was in charge of the grocery shop in the High Street selling dry goods such as tea, rice, sugar and biscuits, while Bill ran the seed merchant side of the business from Frampton’s Yard (now Boston Tea Party in the Furlong Centre). In the mid 20th century, sometime after this c1950 photograph was taken, the building on the left of the High Street grocery was acquired by the Frampton family and run as their horticultural and garden supplies department. By the 1970s competition from the new supermarkets made it difficult for traditional grocers to make a profit. The grocery deMarch 2019
partment with its wonderful aroma of freshly sliced ham, ground coffee and spices finally closed about 1978 and the stock was then entirely given over to seeds, garden and pet-care products. What had been the seed department then became the Job Centre. It is now Hearnes Estate Agency. Ten years later the remaining business was sold to the Coles family who added country clothing to their stock but maintained the Frampton name and continued to supply their Ringwood customers in the same family-run tradition. The original shop finally closed and was sold in 2011, when it was turned into a wine, cocktail and coffee bar, still retaining the Frampton’s name and many of the original fittings.

A pint, a pie and a piece of local history
A
s you stand at the bar, ordering a pint of Old Peculier and a steak pie, it’s unlikely you will be thinking about the name of your local pub. But once you’ve emptied your ale glass and polished off the pie, you may find time to consider how your particular hostelry got its name.
Quirky Britain
A time before signs Pub signs were originally created for people who could not read or write, so a strong visual image was always essential when it came to attracting customers. The history trail begins in ancient Rome. A taberna (a name which gave us the word ‘tavern’) was a small shop that sold wine, and owners traditionally used vine leaves as a trading sign. From 43 AD onwards, when the Roman culture spread to Britain, landlords who couldn’t lay their hands on vine leaves, resorted to using any local greenery that would do the job. Holly was plentiful – and usefully evergreen – so bushes were uprooted and hung outside instead hence
The Holly Bush, The Bush or The Bull and Bush. By 1393, however, it became compulsory for inns to put up a sign that would identify them to the official Ale Taster (surely the most in-demand job of the medieval era). Animal crackers Heraldry has also played a role in the naming of pubs: it was a common practice for inns to adopt the animals or symbols displayed on the crests of high-ranking aristocrats, often because these people were important local landowners. There are over 600 Red Lion pubs in the UK. Other heraldic animal names include The Blue Boar (from the badge of the Earls of Oxford) and The Black Griffin (from the coat of arms of an aristocratic Cardiff family) and The Bear and Ragged Staff (from the crest of the earls of Warwick), but pubs called The Black Horse are thought to be named after highwayman Dick Turpin’s legendary ride from London to York on his horse, Black Bess.
Holy orders Alcohol and religion don’t sit well together, so it’s surprising to discover that some pub names are based on biblical references or religious iconography. St Paul’s epistle to the Hebrews describes faith as a “steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope” (hence The Hope and Anchor), The Lamb and Flag harks back to the Crusades (when the Lamb of God was shown carrying the English flag of St George) and The Crossed Keys is the emblem of St Peter, who holds the keys to heaven. There are so many more naming traditions to explore, including sporting names, hunting names, literary names and trade-related names: each one providing a fascinating insight into the way we used to live. So next time you pass a pub sign swinging gently in the breeze, think of it less as a painted board and more as an intriguing window into history. By Kate McClelland

pring is in full swing, heralded by the departure of our overwintering flocks of geese and ducks and the arrival of migrants back to our shores such as swallows, swifts and martins. If you spend a bit of time watching the surface of the lakes you can catch them displaying acrobatically overhead as they feed. On the edge of Ibsley Water waders including lapwing, oystercatcher, little ringed plover and common sandpiper will be showing as they search for food. In the woodland now a brilliant fresh green, listen out as birds like chiffchaff, blackcap and goldcrest use their song to stake their claim to their feeding territories. The birds on the reserve are busily mating, building nests and rearing their young. If they have a good breeding season, Tern Hide will be the place to visit for a glimpse of a lapwing or oystercatcher chick as they move along the shoreline in search of worms and insects.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust. www.hiwwt.org.uk
If the weather is fine the air will begin to come alive with the buzzing of insect wings, with the pond behind the Education Centre the perfect spot to sit quietly and watch newly emerged dragonflies, such as the downy emerald and emperor, and damselflies including the common blue and blue tailed. On Monday 15th April from 10.30am until 12noon you can discover the wonderful depths of the Blashford pond by joining us on a family pond dip. Please telephone 01425 472760 to book your place, suggested donation ÂŁ4 per person. Take a walk along Dockens Water and you will be rewarded with a splash of spring colour courtesy of the bluebells in full bloom along its banks. Other spring flowers to look out for on the nature reserve include ground ivy, violets and primroses. All this makes Blashford Lakes Nature Reserve a wonderful place to enjoy everything spring has to offer! For a
day out with a difference, join us on Friday 31st May from 11am until 3pm as we dine in the woodland and discover the humble stinging nettle. This is our first monthly event for adults excited by wildlife, nature and the outdoors. Harvest the stems and learn how to make nettle string, sweep them for invertebrates and then pick the tender tops for a simple campfire meal prepared and shared with likeminded adults, booking essential via BlashfordLakes@ hiwwt.org.uk or 01425 472760, cost ÂŁ21. The Blashford Lakes Project is a partnership between Bournemouth Water, New Forest District Council and Wessex Water. The reserve is managed by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, a charity that aims to protect local wildlife and inspire people. The Best Convertibles for under £2000 By James Baggott budget, make sure that the interior is straight, and listen for strange noises from the costly-to-replace power steering pump. Saab 9-3 The 9-3 convertible is a comfortable and spacious drop-top, and there are plenty of spare parts and components available should you need replacements, despite Saab’s now defunct status.
Motoring
W
ith summer just around the corner, if you want a drop-top to provide that windin-your-hair experience we’ve picked out some of the best convertibles for under £2,000. MG TF Readily available and wellpriced, most MG TF’s come with a peppy 1.8-litre engine and all have a folding cloth roof. It’s still a relatively handsome looking car that seems to have aged well, and we found a number for well under our £2,000 budget. Citroen C3 Pluriel Designed to be five cars in one, the C3 Pluriel wasn’t successful, meaning you can pick up decent used examples and, though they may not have a sports car design, you still get that drop-top experience very cheaply. Most cars get alloy wheels and air conditioning, but make sure the folding roof functions correctly. Mercedes SLK Buying a used Mercedes can mean higher repair costs and pricier parts, so choose carefully – a decent servicing history is essential.
An early 2000s SLK should be well-equipped, with electronically-adjustable seats and cruise control. Toyota MR2 For no-frills, involving motoring, the little MR2 provides exciting performance from a 1.8-litre engine, and its compact size makes it feel nimble on the road. The lack of any real boot does make it impractical but there are plenty of reasonable examples available within budget. Mazda MX-5 The MX-5 is a reliable, cheapto-repair convertible and is a go-to choice for those who want a relatively involving drive coupled with compact dimensions. Rust is an issue, particularly on early models, but a clean example will provide miles of trouble-free motoring. Mini Convertible The ‘new’ Mini has proved to be immensely popular, and the convertible version was snapped up as a result of its cutesy styling and reasonably powerful range of engines. Available well within our £2,000
Volkswagen Beetle Cabriolet Most Bugs come comprehensively equipped, with air conditioning and alloy wheels just some of the extras you’ll find fitted, and the Beetle is a decent and reliable soft-top. BMW 3 Series Convertible (E46) There are many examples of 3 Series convertibles to be found at this budget. Most common are E46 models, which are sturdy and excellent to drive. A variety of engines are available too, with even the top end straight-six models well in this price bracket. Double check the arches as these are prone to rust. In addition, turn the steering lock to lock while travelling at low speed and listen out for any troubling knocking noises. Audi TT Roadster There aren’t many about in this price range, but the Audi TT Roadster is a fine option. Strong build quality, reliable engines and quirky styling mean that this soft-top still looks and feels fresh today. At this price you’ll be looking at a high-mileage example, but providing it’s got a decent service history there’s no reason why these can’t be hassle-free convertibles.

Spring is in the Air Meet your new spring essentials, from a multitasking moisturiser to an eco-friendly toothbrush…
R
Beauty
egular readers may remember that I was lusting after Connock London’s new fragrances before Christmas. Well I’m happy to say they didn’t disappoint. Manuka is my new go-to perfume. As you might gather from the name, it’s based around honey, so has a rich, comforting scent. Lemon and mandarin add a burst of citrus freshness, jasmine and other florals add romance, and warm amber, vetivert and musks provide warmth and tone down the sweetness. The result is a rich, grown-up fragrance, which is unlike anything else on the market and perfect for spring/ summer. A real signature scent, it’s £75 from www. connocklondon.co.uk. With winter finally behind us and longer days stretching ahead, it’s time to start thinking about sun protection again. If, like me, you barely have time to cleanse and moisturise in the mornings, let alone add anything else to your routine, a moisturiser with SPF is your
friend. I’m currently using Manuka Doctor’s Apiclear Daily Defence – a moisturiser, primer and SPF 20 lotion in one. It’s suitable for all skin-types, helps to blur fine lines and wrinkles, and contains hyaluronic acid and manuka honey to lock in moisture. It’s £24.99 from www.manukadoctor.co.uk and Holland & Barrett stores. Trying to cut down on your plastic waste? Bamboo toothbrushes are all the rage right now. If you want to try one, I recommend the Humble Brush (see www.thehumble. co). The handle is made from sustainably grown bamboo, which can be composted when you’ve finished with it (as long as you cut the head off). It’s ergonomically shaped, and the nylon bristles are better for your teeth than other synthetic bristles. As if that
to help keep skin healthy and avoid dry patches. And the citrus, mint and menthol scent is a welcome boost in the mornings. While the shower gel is aimed at men, I find it to be pretty unisex, so have been nicking my partner’s most mornings. See www.men-u.com. I’m a huge fan of Bobbi Brown’s Extra Lip Tints (£25.50 each). They fall somewhere between a lipstick and a gloss, and give lips a subtle, natural colour, while adding moisture. It seems other customers are in agreement, as three new shades were added to the collection back in January. Bare Nude, Bare Raspberry and Bare Blackberry have joined Bare Pink, Bare Melon and Bare Popsicle. I find Bare
wasn’t enough, every brush sold helps to provide children in need with oral care products and support. It’s £4 from Boots, Superdrug, The Co-op, Holland and Barratt and other retailers. Concentrated products are another way to cut down on plastic waste. Men-ü’s Shower Gel is so concentrated that one bottle can last up to six months, which makes the £26.85 price tag a bit more bearable. It contains Pro Vitamin B5 and Vitamin E
Nude perfect for the school run and nipping to the shops. It adds a hint of colour and plenty of shine. See www. bobbibrown.co.uk. by Kate Duggan

The Fordingbridge Players 2019 Spring Production 29th - 31st May
T
his spring, the Fordingbridge Players will be putting on the European premiere of The Ladies Foursome by Canadian playwright Norm Foster. A play about three women who gather for a round of golf in honour of a recently deceased playing partner. They are joined by a fourth woman and many secrets, confessions and surprises come to the surface in this comedy. Be prepared for discussions on life, love, men and sex, careers and children… and not much on golf.
This production opens the new Fordingbridge Arts and Literature Festival and hence we are diverting slightly from our norm by performing on Wednesday to Friday, and trying out a new venue for us at Forres Sandle Manor school. In addition, we will be fundraising for a great cause, Hope for Tomorrow, the mobile cancer care unit, one of whose treatment locations is Fordingbridge. Tickets will therefore be priced at £9, with £1 from each ticket going to this charity. Tickets will be available from mid April from www.fordingbridgeplayers.org.uk or at Jessica’s in Fordingbridge.
S
The Fordingbridge Players are always happy to welcome new members, whether acting, backstage, or providing technical help. Visit our website for details of how to join.
Fordingbridge Twinning News
till flush from its recent sell-out success of its annual “Murder Mystery” event last Saturday, (“best one yet”) Fordingbridge Twinning Association is now preparing for its AGM which will take place at AvonWay Community Centre, the North Room, Fordingbridge, during the evening of Thursday 25th April. Please join us to: a) Join or update your subscriptions (still held down to £10 per household). b) Enjoy some French cheese and wine, and maybe some French music? Come along and see.
c) Find out about forthcoming events, like Boules, music, cream teas, the next murder mystery event, and most importantly, the proposed visit to Vimoutiers in October, always a very enjoyable event, beautifully hosted by our French Twinning colleagues. d) Find out how Brexit is affecting the Association (29th March will have happened by then: will we be in or out?) We hope to see you all there. For further information, contact Derek &/or Alison Ayling, on 01425 650770, or by email, hippotrain@btinternet.com

The social club meets fortnightly at Greyfriars Activity Centre and has another full programme of entertainment to look forward to this year. In April the club will have a visit from the Dorset Blind Association giving an opportunity to hear about any new aids that are available

A variety of entertainment continues throughout the summer months including an outing to Damerham for a cream tea and the summer lunch at Tyrell’s Ford Hotel. Scribe to Screen Don’t miss out on reading the novel of these TV and film adaptions
Book Reviews
Big Little Lies – Liane Moriarty Series two of Big Little Lies is due this June. If you haven’t yet read the book that the first series was based on, now’s the time. It follows three mothers in the run up to a murder investigation. Madeline is fiercely loyal, impetuous and prone to holding a grudge. Celeste is stunningly beautiful but her perfect home life isn’t all it seems. The youngest of the three, Jane, is struggling with a secret from her past. As the three women become closer, a rift grows between the trio and the rest of the kindergarten parents. But is it really big enough to lead to murder? A wry, witty portrayal of modern life. Bird Box – Josh Malerman Malorie is taking the children on a journey down the river. They will all need blindfolds, because even a glimpse at what waits outside could kill them. ‘Boy’ and ‘girl’ have never seen a tree or the sky, but at four years old
they’re trained to listen very, very carefully, because it’s not just monsters that can kill you. This atmospheric thriller was a hit on Netflix and the book is even better. Expect a tense, rollercoaster of a ride. Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine – Gail Honeyman Eleanor has an ordinary job, in an ordinary town. But to her colleagues, Eleanor herself is decidedly odd. When she inadvertently helps an acquaintance to rescue an elderly man, Eleanor discovers there may be more to life than just existing. A beautiful book about the importance of human connections. The film is currently in development, starring Reese Witherspoon as Eleanor. The Knife of Never Letting Go – Patrick Ness In Prentisstown it’s never quiet. The thoughts of men and animals crowd you wherever you walk. But then Todd finds a patch of silence, where the thoughts of others can’t penetrate, and discovers that everything
he believes to be true may be a lie. The Knife of Never Letting Go is the first book in a series. The film adaptation, Chaos Walking, hit cinemas last month. The Woman in the Window – A. J. Finn Dr Anna Fox is agoraphobic and lives alone. She spends her days watching films, talking to people online and spying on the neighbours. She also drinks a lot of wine and is rather slapdash with her medications. So when she thinks she’s witnessed a serious crime, how can she make people believe her? And can she really trust her own judgement? A slow-burning thriller. Read it before the film comes out this autumn. Where’d You Go, Bernadette – Maria Semple Renowned architect and eccentric Bernadette has disappeared and it seems it’s up to her 14 year old daughter, Bee, to figure out what happened. Bee’s journey will take her all the way to Antarctica. An amusing read told through emails, letters, phone transcriptions and official reports. The film stars Cate Blanchett and Kristen Wiig.

Don’t be an April Fool Beware the tech scams trying to trick you other issue with your account; similarly Apple or Microsoft don’t remotely monitor your computer and contact you if they find problems. If in doubt, phone the company or visit their website by typing its address into your web browser. Sometimes the fraudsters will phone you. They’ll say they’re BT, or Amazon, or Apple, or Microsoft, and their goal is to get you to download and install a program which they say will fix your problems. It won’t: it enables them to take control of your computer and either get your personal details or lock it up until you agree to pay a ransom. These calls are never genuine. Other scams are really old, but they’ve been updated for the digital age. Fraudsters
Technology
U
nlike April Fools’ Day, which ends at noon, online trickery goes on all day every day. Some fraud is easily spotted but others can be really convincing. One of the most common kinds of trickery is ‘phishing’, which is when you receive officiallooking emails from what appears to be your bank or a big-name website. The email usually says there’s something wrong with your account: click here to log in and fix it. But the link goes to a sophisticated fake, and if you enter your details the fraudsters can then use your details on the real website. That’s bad enough if it’s just one site, but many people use the same password on lots of different ones. If the fraudsters get your details for one website, they can then get into all the other sites you use. To prevent that from happening
you can do a number of things. Firstly, never use the same password on more than one site and use the password manager built into Apple Macs, iPads and iPhones or use a third-party password manager such as 1Password, LastPass or Dashlane. Secondly, set up two-factor authentication. Sites from Google, Microsoft and other big names enable you to supplement your password so that when anybody tries to log in, a code is sent to your phone. No code, no entry. Thirdly, invest in security software. Look for ‘antiphishing’ in the features list: that means incoming emails are scanned against a list of known offenders. It doesn’t get rid of every fake email but it does filter most. Finally, be suspicious. Your bank will never email you if there’s a security problem or
Fraudsters can take control of your computer misrepresent items on online shopping or auction sites, or they run offers for too-goodto-be-true deals as Facebook adverts – recent ads offered mountain bikes worth more than £500 for less than £50. There were no bikes, of course, and because the fraudsters weren’t in the UK anybody they fooled would find it exceptionally difficult to get their money back. Stick to reputable sites and go with your gut: if it seems too good to be true, it usually is. A nostalgic place where old-fashioned trams rattle on the cobbles
Lisbon S
wept by the Atlantic breeze on the banks of the river Tagus, Lisbon is a lovely city where beyond the tree-lined avenues and elegant squares, the past lingers in myriad nooks and crannies. Old or new, quiet or bustling, the Portuguese capital is full of contrasts and always surprising.
Travel
At the foot of the ‘seven hills’, Baixa, the lower town, is the main commercial hub, rebuilt in neo-classical style by the Marquis of Pombal after the 1755 earthquake. At the heart of it all is the spacious Rossio Square, beautifully paved in wave-like patterns of limestone and basalt. Fountains, flower sellers, cafés and pastry shops, it’s a place to relax and watch the world go by. Restaurants and boutiques line the popular Augusta Street ,while beyond the Triumphal Arch the vast Plaça do Comércio opens out on to the river, spanned by the 25th of April suspension bridge. Inspired by the Golden Gate in San Francisco, the bridge commemorates the peaceful return to democracy
in 1974 when the population muzzled the soldiers’ rifles with carnations. Stylish façades, blue mosaics glinting in the sunshine, churches, museums and gardens: there’s plenty to explore in the centre, but sooner or later visitors come across the intriguing Santa Justa Elevator, a neo-gothic lift embellished with filigree, wood panels and brass fittings. Built in 1902 by an apprentice of Eiffel, it takes you up to the western heights of Bairro Alto overlooking the low town and river. Sleepy in the day, lively at night, this old district loves bohemian life. On the eastern side of town, the traditional Alfama district clambers up the slopes, just like the Kasbah set up long ago by Moorish invaders. Tightly packed houses, steep winding lanes, narrow passageways and hidden squares, it’s a nostalgic place where old-fashioned trams rattle on the cobbles and the melancholy sound of Fado guitars drifts in dark tavernas. Up on the top is Castelo de
Sao Jorge, the citadel built by the Moors then turned into a royal palace. It’s well worth the climb, for up on the battlements one can enjoy the most magnificent panorama over Lisbon and the river Tagus on its way to Belem, where caravels once set off to explore the world. At the mouth of the river, Belem claims some of the finest buildings financed by the golden Age of Discoveries, including two UNESCO sites, the grand Jeronimos Monastery, with its turrets and archways mirrored in a pond, and – also commissioned by Manuel I – the fortified yet delicate Belem Tower lapped by ocean waves. But most dramatic perhaps is the Monument to the Discoveries, built in 1960 and rising 52 metres above a huge mariner’s compass. Shaped like a caravel about to sail, it is flanked by statues of maritime heroes, among them Vasco de Gama, and led on the prow by the great pioneer Henry the Navigator. Solange Hando
