f you are an ardent Sudoku fan then you might have been very confused by the answer to the puzzle in our last issue which had no resemblance to the puzzle itself! Oops! Thanks go to one of our particularly smart but bemused readers who alerted us! The correct solution can be found on page 38. On the ‘smart’ subject, have you come across any of the new ‘Smart’ motorway’s yet? We have an article on page 16 which explains the way they work. Personally I’m not convinced how safe they are as the old hard shoulder isn’t the safest of places to break down or stop in anyway and now even that is disappearing. The thought of breaking down on a dark, wet night and not being able to at least pull off onto the hard shoulder seems

So until they are all completed we’ll just have to contend with endless 50mph motorway speed limits for now! In fact after Googling SMART - I find it may not necessarily be smart as one would assume. Just marketing speak for a simple 5 element acronym used by businesses to create a helpful aid for an actionable plan for results. The 5 elements being Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-based goals. On a similar vein we have smart meters that go dumb, unlimited phone deals which are in fact limited or free offers that aren’t, etc! I’m sure you all know of many other examples! So my advice would be “Always read the smallprint!”

PAST and PRESENT Verwood Station

1960s

he photo above shows a very smart Verwood station and the Albion Inn immediately behind with its white Ebblake brick heart pattern visible on the end gable. This early colour photo is an excellent example of the Southern Railway colour scheme used between 1923 and 1948. Buff for the woodwork and planking, bright chrome green for doors, framing and canopies etc, apple green for canopy brackets and white window bars and glazing frames. The Southern Railway headed poster is also an indication of this period. In 1948 the railways were nationalised with the creation of British Railways. The b/w inset photo was taken towards the end of the B.R era when closure of the line was imminent and the station had a general air of neglect and delapidation.

The photo below is taken from almost the same position (housing prevents the view from any further back). It is hard to believe that standing here 60 years ago you would be waiting on the down platform with the train to Bournemouth just arriving! The road to Cranborne now runs where it did originally 160 years ago before it was diverted over the railway bridge and the old isolated bridge arch is now a useful all weather seating and storage area.

Julia’s House seeks participants for 2019 challenge events

ulia’s House, the Dorset and Wiltshire children’s hospice charity, is inviting people to sign up to one of their Challenge fundraising events for 2019. The five events offer an exciting opportunity to step outside your comfort zone and achieve something truly amazing, whilst raising funds to help children living with life-limiting conditions. Choose from a Jurassic Coast trek, a tandem skydive, two cycle challenges – one through Mallorca’s stunning coastal scenery or one closer to home in the Dorset/Wiltshire countryside - or you may prefer to pull on your running shoes and take part in the popular Bournemouth Marathon Festival. “By signing up to one of our 2019 Challenge events you can make a big difference to the lives of local, life-limited children and their families,” explains Hannah Miller, Challenge Events Manager for Julia’s House. “We rely on events like this to help us throw a lifeline to mums and dads facing their own enormous challenges every day.” The season begins on 8 June with the Jurassic Coast Trek – a challenging 13 or 26 mile hike which takes in breathtaking views along Dorset’s stunning coastline. Spotlight on Trevor Parsons, Verwood’s wildlife photographer

s a child brought up in London Trevor Parsons was a keen photographer. He moved to Verwood from London in 2002 and has recently re-discovered his love of wildlife and landscape photography that he had as a child. He is a member of the Royal Photographic Society and has worked for the photograhic library Getty. After visiting The Wildlife Roadshow at Lyndhurst last year Trevor was very much encouraged by Simon King from the BBC Springwatch team and says “Before last year no one had seen my photos apart from my family. It

was only when I spoke to Simon King at his wildlife roadshow at Lyndhurst Hampshire and him saying social media was the best way to get my photos out there that I thought I would give it a try and it’s kind of taken off for me. I am a passionate nature photographer.” He has also recently been interviewed on BBC Solent radio and Forest FM and has had photos featured in The Times and RSPB’s Nature’s Voice Instagram page. Verwood Home Library Service thanks long standing volunteers

special coffee morning took place at Verwood Library in December. Bob and Mary McKay, Home Library Service volunteers with the Royal Voluntary Service, were retiring after 16 years of volunteering, first for the Meals on Wheels Service in Ferndown and more recently for the Home Library Service in Verwood. Dorset Home Library Service Manager Maria Jacobson said: “We will really miss Bob and Mary! They are wonderful volunteers who have visited older people in their own homes for many years, bringing much needed friendship and social contact as well as reading materials. They have been hugely reliable, thoughtful, kind and supportive and I would like to wish them

all the very best for their well- deserved retirement.” The Home Library Service in Verwood needs new clients: if you or someone you know finds it difficult to get to the library then this service might be for you. It is provided by Dorset Library Service free of charge, and delivered by Royal Voluntary Service volunteers every three weeks. This is Going to Hurt – Adam Kay From 100 hour weeks to moral conundrums and emergency operations, the life of a junior doctor is far from easy. Adam Kay reveals all through six years of diary entries. Surprisingly, This is Going to Hurt is an incredibly funny book, particularly

the numerous footnotes explaining hospital lingo. However, Kay also gives us an insight into the stark reality of life on the frontline of the NHS. Once Upon a River – Diane Setterfield A man stumbles into The Swan Inn carrying the body of what appears to be a dead girl in his arms. A few hours later, the little girl stirs. But who is she? Part adult fairy tale, part folk tale, Once Upon a River celebrates the art of storytelling and weaves numerous stories into one rich tapestry. Thoroughly enjoyable. Codename Villanelle – Luke Jennings If you loved the BBC’s Killing Eve, don’t miss the book it was based on. Villanelle is a coldblooded assassin, who you just can’t help but root for. Eve is the woman tasked with stopping her. The storyline is quite different from that of the TV series and has less dark humour, but there’s still plenty of suspense to keep you reading.

Smart Motorways Explained

ast swathes of the UK’s road network are being transformed into ‘Smart Motorways’. The government cites them as the solution for congestion, with the hard shoulder being used as a live lane and overhead gantries displaying variable speed limits with cameras enforcing them. Highways England says the introduction of Smart Motorways has ‘increased journey reliability’ as well as reducing personal injury accidents. But this new network requires a new way of driving, as well as a better understanding of what the overhead signs mean. Let’s take a look. Are there different types of Smart Motorway? There are. Though the overall objective of the scheme is to improve congestion, there are different types of Smart Motorway dotted throughout the country. The first is a controlled motorway. This retains its hard shoulder, which can be used in the event of an emergency. The remaining lanes are subject to variable speed limits. These are displayed on overhead gantries, and enforced by speed cameras. If no speed limit is displayed, then the national speed limit is in place. Then there are all-lanerunning sections of motorway. This means that all lanes of the motorway are live, and there isn’t a section of hard shoulder. In the event of an

Any driver who ignores this could not only be getting into a dangerous situation, but subject to a £100 fine and three penalty points on their licence. Again, overhead speed limits are enforced by cameras. Finally, you’ve got a dynamic hard shoulder. While sounding like an 80’s prog-rock band, this section means that the hard shoulder can be opened to live traffic during periods of congestion. A solid white line still signifies the hard shoulder’s location, but those overhead gantry signs will display whether or not it can be used by traffic. It shouldn’t be used if the signs above the lane are blank or displaying a red ‘X’. Again, this is enforced by the overhead cameras. What happens if I break down on a motorway with no hard shoulder? Breaking down on the motorway can be stressful and potentially dangerous at the best of times, but what happens if the worst happens on a Smart Motorway with no hard shoulder? Should you begin to suffer with vehicle difficulties, look out for an emergency refuge area (ERA). These are denoted by blue signs with an orange SOS telephone symbol, and are dotted at 1.5 mile intervals along the highway. If you’re unable to get to

an ERA, you should attempt to get onto the verge (providing there is no barrier), switch on your hazard lights and exit the vehicle safely via the nearside door. If you can’t get to the nearside of the motorway safely, stay in the vehicle with your seatbelt securely fastened. If you’ve been able to get out of the car, contact Highways England via one of the phones placed in the ERA. However, if you can’t exit the vehicle, you need to call 999 from your mobile. Can I get caught for speeding even if a limit isn’t displayed above the road? This has been a point of contention for some time. Highways England states that: “All mandatory speed limits are enforced by police, as is the national speed limit of 70mph when no speeds are shown. If you break the speed limits you will be caught.” The best advice is simply not to exceed the speed limit. Do Smart Motorways actually work? According to Highways England, Smart Motorways are helping to keep roads moving. Published statistics say that journey reliability has improved by 22 per cent and, as mentioned, personal injury accidents have been reduced by more than half. Highways England also says that where accidents did occur, their severity was much lower overall. By James Baggott

Yes, this car looked very jazzy and had all those now-essential trimmings such as sunroof, climate control, DAB radio and bluetooth phone connection. Topping it off was the tiny ‘Twinair’ two cylinder turbocharged petrol engine making only 600cc and sitting in the front of the car - so unlike the original 500. Was this going to be an uncomfortably long road trip? Not so. Even before I got out of Europcar’s compound, I felt my expectations lifted considerably. A tiny engine but one which wasn’t afraid of hard work, ably assisted by a smooth quick-changing gearbox, suspension which seemed quite firm and ultra-light steering, all working in complete harmony very pleasant indeed. But could it cut the mustard on

the motorway, and down the lanes? This little car is never going to eat a Ferrari for breakfast, but was certainly able to mix with average traffic and overtake quickly on the motorway, I was so impressed. My next surprise came with its performance down the lanes. The suspension was surprisingly supple and together with quick steering it inspired confidence and could be placed on the road very accurately, surprising oncoming cars. The turbo showed me that a tiny engine can be programmed to lift the Titanic if necessary, so a fast but economical pace could be maintained very safely, as I had already learned this car has powerful brakes and excellent stability after an uncomfortably close experience on the motorway. With 4 seats, the rears are just about sufficient for small people if the front seats are not pushed too far back - yes, the front seats had adequate adjustment. Apart from the optional sunroof, this car has few frills and this is reflected in the surprisingly low price - there are more expensive posh or racy Abarth versions available, but you really don’t need all that to have loads of fun. You can take it that I liked this car a lot. A very Italianate character!

ome cars are iconic, even for people who don’t drive. Think small cars and the choice becomes difficult. Certainly the Austin Mini was one and remained in production for over 40 years, the original Smart was another which had a chequered history, while the Italians who always wanted their designs to please visually, came up with the original Fiat 500 which was to star in many films such as the Pink Panther series - and in visual terms remains in production to this day. There is an extensive cluster of other city cars including those from the far East, from Volkswagen, Peugeot and Renault - which in my view all fall very far short of iconic status. Inevitably, my plans for one particular car road test were thwarted by a careless car maker failing to deliver - or to notify me - so I was forced to rent the only car available for

n the era of supermarkets, ready meals and worldwide food imports, this month we look at some of the more unusual British dishes that were once common but have now disappeared from our everyday tables.

History

There is no doubt that although many of our staples have remained, the dishes we eat daily have changed drastically over the centuries. Who would now enjoy a bowl of garum? Yet this fermented fish soup was a favourite of the Romans. We tend to think of the medieval era as being typified by banquets overflowing with roast meat and washed down with endless tankards of mead. In fact, there were many cookery books kept at this time and dishes were often surprisingly complex, served with a great deal of visual wit. Take for example the cockentryce. A capon, or castrated cockerel, was boiled, cut in half and sewn to the rump of a piglet. This was then stuffed and spit-roasted before being ‘gilded’ using

In those days if you were offered custarde, you wouldn’t have poured it over your apple pie. Custarde was a type of 15th century quiche made with eggs, veal and prunes. Medieval foodies loved to combine fruit with their meat in dishes like fish sausage, made from a mixture of fish, currants, cloves, mace and salt. Puddings were equally creative with wonderfully poetic names such as ‘a dish of snow’ - a concoction of whipped egg whites and apple purée, and ‘eggs in moonlight’ - eggs poached in rose water and sugar to resemble moons. Some dishes would probably not be considered palatable today. For example, in the 1700s, cows’ udder would be eaten either roasted or boiled with spices and served cold, and Richard Bradley’s The Country Housewife and Lady’s Director in the Management of a House and the Delights and Profits of a Farm (1736) contains a recipe for boiled vipers. In rural areas, both badger and hedgehog were considered a delicacy.

Bradley’s cookery book has instructions on how to prepare badger by cutting off its ‘gammons’ (hind legs), stripping them and then soaking them in brine for a week to ten days, after which they should be boiled for four or five hours and finally roasted. The hedgehog was a Romany favourite and would have been widely eaten in midBedfordshire where there was once a thriving Romany gypsy population. The hedgehog would be caught, packed in clay and baked on the open fire. Once the clay had hardened it was broken away, which took the skin and spines with it, to uncover a meat said to look and taste like roast pork (hence the ‘hog’ perhaps). Beestings (or beastings) pudding was another rural dish. A milk pudding, it was made at home from the rich colostrum of a cow that had recently given birth. The Victorians were adept at using every part of a slaughtered animal for food, from the brains to the hooves. Calves’ ears would be shaved, boiled and fried; offal used to make various patés; and calves’ feet boiled to extract the natural gelatine. We could probably learn a lot from the Victorians in managing our food wastage today. Perhaps future generations will look back on our love of Super Noodles and tinned baked beans with both horror and amusement.

here are organisations and individuals all over Dorset that might need those things you are about to throw in the recycling or rubbish bin.

Most people in Dorset recycle their waste because it’s the right thing to do, but reusing items is always better – both for the environment and the public purse. Every single item kept out of the bin saves your local council money in processing costs and reduces the amount of energy required to recycle or treat waste. Charity Ideas2Action teamed up with the Dorset Waste Partnership (DWP) to produce ‘We Need That – Dorset’, a reuse directory that lists dozens of commonly thrown-away items, and the many not-forprofit organisations and individuals who need them. New editions are produced every 2 months, so the details of the everincreasing list of organisations and individuals can be constantly updated. Items include:  Biscuit tins  Flower pots  Pallets  Buttons  Beer bottle caps  Paint The directory is an easy-to-use 21-page document that can be downloaded and printed. Useful items are listed alphabetically, with the contact details of the organisations that need them provided alongside. It can be downloaded by following the online link “dorsetforyou.com/reuse-directory”.

Copies will also be available to view at Dorset libraries. People can then contact the organisations directly or may wish to take their items to one of Ideas2Action’s many “Win on Waste®” events held around Dorset, Poole and Bournemouth. These events see volunteers gather donations from members of the public and distribute them to the organisations in the directory. Some schools have even set up their own sessions. The waste items are then sent to specialist facilities to be made into something new, used in arts and crafts or sold on to make money for charity. There are currently 19 organisations and individuals in the new directory who are benefitting from this initiative, but Ideas2Action are always keen to hear from others who may benefit from these waste items. lashford Lakes is getting a makeover! The unique mix of habitats at the Wildlife Trust nature reserve is home to a range of wildlife from kingfishers and otters to our famous great white egret, Walter. Soon visitors will be able to enjoy looking for and learning about our iconic wildlife and more besides from our new and much improved facilities. Thanks to generous donations from the local community and funding from Veolia Environment Trust, we are able to renovate parts of the reserve to make it as welcoming as it can be for people and wildlife. We have begun work on a number of changes and you may notice some parts of the reserve are inaccessible or currently not looking their best. However, this is only temporary and the results will be a vastly improved and altogether better nature reserve. Here is what we have in store… • A brand new bird hide – this will be a much bigger, more flexible space overlooking Ibsley Water than the existing

Tern Hide it replaces. The new hide will have a green roof perfect for pollinators and will provide panoramic views so you can get the best look at the lakes’ wonderful wildlife. • A second pond and a new sensory garden – these additions will provide new habitat for wildlife and more accessible pond dipping areas for visiting groups of children and adults. • A welcome hut and more seating – a new welcome hut will be manned by volunteers who will greet visitors and answer questions about the wildlife. We will also introduce more seating and picnic tables. • A new wildlife discovery trail and improved signage – we are creating a new discovery trail with beautiful willow sculptures and chainsaw carvings for visitors to enjoy. New and improved signs will guide visitors and provide more information about the reserve’s wildlife. • A new elevated viewpoint – this will be beside the main car park to give panoramic views across Ibsley Water,

ideal for viewing starling murmurations and other gatherings of birds. We’re very excited about the improvements to Blashford Lakes; it is such a special place and we hope the new developments will help more people experience and appreciate the wonderful wildlife on our doorstep. To help the birds through the last of Winter why not join us to weave a willow bird feeder on Monday 18th February from 10.30am until 12noon. ets can bring a lot of fun, laughter and comfort to a child’s life. Elizabeth Kilbey, from Channel 4’s Secret Life of 4 Year Olds, says: “Research from BMC Psychiatry has revealed that interacting or simply being in the presence of animals has a soothing effect on children, reducing their heart rate and skin temperature. Spending time with furry friends, and stroking, cuddling and caring for them, can release comforting endorphins.”

All animals need care and attention, but some require more than others. Birds, for instance, need to have their cages cleaned out once a week and their food and water changed daily. Dogs need at least one walk a day (often more) and most don’t like to be left alone for more than four hours at a time. The age of your children will play a big part in choosing the right pet for your family. A big, boisterous puppy could easily knock a toddler over, for example, and won’t take kindly to having its tail pulled, and some breeds of hamster are too small and fast for

young children to handle. You’ll need to factor in the cost of food, any regular medications, pet insurance, potential vet’s bills and accessories such as cat litter and toys. Depending on your circumstances and the type of animal you choose, there may also be other costs involved, such as paid dog-walking services or cattery costs. Once you’ve decided what type of animal you want, you’ll need to find the pet that’s right for you. Rescue centres are a good first port of call, as they should be able to tell you what age group a pet can live with, whether it’s house-trained, how long it can be left alone for, and so on.

Less reputable breeders don’t always provide the level of healthcare they should, which means you could end up with large vet’s bills in the future.

Verwood Choral Society

erwood Choral Society held another successful concert in December at the Methodist Church in Verwood and a large audience enjoyed some lovely Christmas music and Carols. All of the concerts raise money for charity and this one raised £650 for ‘Coping with Chaos’, a local charity which supports disabled children and their families. This enables them to go away for short breaks together as a family and also provides support and help for the families and carers.

Verwood In Tune - Afternoon concerts

eyboard concerts held on the last Wednesday each month from February to November at the Verwood Hub, will be switching to the afternoon at 2pm in 2019.

The choral society, since its formation 30 years ago, has raised well over £20,000 for mostly local charities. They are now taking a break and will begin preparing for the next concert in June 2019. New members of all ages are welcome to join us, especially Tenors and bases. Rehearsals take place every Monday evening between 7.30pm – 9.00pm at The Parish Church of St Michael’s in Verwood. Hillside Community First School News

he pupils and staff of Hillside First School in Verwood were honoured with a visit from Henry VIII’s niece and husband, the Duke and Duchess of Suffolk recently, as part of Year 4’s Tudor topic. The couple, who were greeted with respectful bows and curtsies, talked to the children about life in their times and went into great detail about how the Tudor men and women would dress. They proceeded to remove a few of their many layers of clothing, explaining the reasons for their design and choice of materials – a little cap with ear pieces to ensure that the devil couldn’t whisper in your ear, or the fine cloth being

shown off by being pulled through the slits of a doublet. The children were encouraged to feel samples of fabric, wooden plates and pewter tankards. Some lucky children were delighted to try on various pieces and even the headteacher, Mr Jeremy Harrison, was persuaded to try on some hose (short trousers) and the Duke’s jacket! The Duke and Duchess, Nigel Manley and Fiona Starkey, were impressed with the pupils’ knowledge of their topic and the informed questions they were asked. The children thoroughly enjoyed the visit and will remember the facts that were brought to life for them.
