It’s Dark Outside, So Pick Up Your Paddle by Kate McLelland

“I’m in the centre of London ... No traffic, no street beer din, no synched steps of business folk rushing for the train… I can breathe. The air here has rarely felt so clean; I’ve never seen the city with so much sky.” o writes blogger Sam Haddad on the website mpora.com, describing his night-time journey along the Thames in – of all things – a kayak. Sam is just one of a growing number of outdoor adventurers who like to explore the UK’s rivers, lakes and coastal waters by kayak as night falls. It’s one of those off-the-wall activities that have recently grown in popularity and are particularly favoured by social media users looking for quirky and unusual experiences to post on Facebook or Instagram. The Oxford Dictionary defines a ‘kayak’ as “a canoe of a type used originally by the Inuit, made of a light frame with a watertight covering having a small opening in the top to sit in”. Kayaks are light, manoeuvrable and hard to capsize, but to the average landlubber a kayak may not seem the obvious choice for a nocturnal adventure in a

Quirky Britain

S

busy waterway. It’s hard to understand the attraction of this type of transport until you hear the first-hand accounts of people who have actually experienced night kayaking: “It was like a dream” …“We couldn’t stop talking about our experience for days” … “Outstanding and magical.” (Comments left by first-time night kayakers on the travel site Trip Advisor.) Don’t underrate the risks Despite being an enthusiastic proponent of night-kayaking, experienced sea kayaker Duncan Smith is aware of the dangers: “On nights where the moon is not providing natural light you are more reliant on your night vision. This can be cut dramatically by the glare from any head-torch or deck light you carry and whilst you can see into the distance … it can be difficult to see/read the water in front of you.” He adds: “Sound seems amplified in the dark, to the point when tiny waves breaking on the pebbled shore can sound like huge, dumping surf.” Dipping your toe in the water If you’re keen to try kayaking by night but have never used a kayak before, you should take your first trip under the guidance of an experienced leader. Organised excursions

are available across the UK, with many different experiences to choose from. Most excursions include instructions on how to handle a kayak, but if you’re in any doubt about whether the route is suitable for you, you should check with the operator prior to booking. Join a club If you are already familiar with kayaks but have never ventured out at night, you could join a club for support, companionship and advice. There are numerous kayak clubs throughout Britain – contact the British Canoeing Union (britishcanoeing.org. uk) to find your nearest group, but be aware that not all clubs practice kayaking after dark. When you read the testimonials of people who have experienced night-kayaking, it’s easy to understand why it creates such a sense of awe and wonder. Noisy daytime environments become peaceful, skies become bigger and familiar landscapes take on an eerie new beauty. But most seasoned kayakers will also admit to enjoying the moment when they reach dry land, looking forward to the chance to warm up over a pint in a cosy local pub.

Dear Readers,

o doubt you recognised the painting of Corfe Castle on this issue’s front cover. The castle was part of a gift of £30million bequeathed to the National Trust in 1982 and at the time was the largest the Trust had ever received. The whole estate included 16,000 acres of farmland, an elegant 17th-century mansion containing one of the country’s finest private art collections and the ruins of Corfe Castle, a historic fortress near the English Channel, parts of which are at least 900 years old. Not bad for an organisation which started in 1931 with just over 4 acres in Cardigan Bay, Wales and a vision “To provide open-air sitting rooms for the poor’’! If you haven’t guessed already, the estate was Kingston Lacy near Wimborne.

with best wishes,

We have often explored the gardens and snowdrop event at Kingston Lacy, but never the actual house. So we recently spent a fascinating day exploring the house itself - with the aid of very knowledgeable guides of course! The 2nd floor tented bedrooms are definitely OTT, but then so was the owner at the time of course! Thoroughly recommended. Ferndown before the Bulldozers Less than 60 years ago Ferndown was just a village, with gravel roads, a scattering of shops and not even a set of traffic lights. Then the bulldozers arrived and much of Ferndown’s history disappeared forever. Part autobiography and part history, these articles are a fascinating glimpse of a village in transition.

O

Ivy Cottage, Ringwood Road

ur Feb/March 2018 Ivy Cottage c1900 article mentions Ferndown’s first butcher’s shop which opened in 1895, located on the site of what is currently The White Heather Pub and owned by Reuben Webb. Twenty years later he moved across the road to The Parade. In 1916 he bought a large plot of land between Dudsbury Avenue and Fernlea Avenue where he kept sheep, pigs and bullocks for slaughter. But slaughtering finished before the second world war and meat was bought in from 1953 the Uddens abbatoir. Reuben’s son Percy joined the business as a 16 year old and in 1937 Percy’s 14 year old son Ken left school to work in the shop, which by now had moved along Ringwood Road to new premises at Ivy Cottage. (Circled on the 1st photo) The 2nd photo taken during the Queen’s Coronation in 1953 shows that the house has been extended outwards to become Webb’s butchers shop. Percy retired in 1959 and Ken left to work part-time at the Wallis store in Victoria Road and Robson’s Grocers. But the Webb shop remained as a butchers for many years and is today the Joy Indian restaurant. Today although these properties have escaped the bulldozers ...so far, the attractive brickwork has been painted over and the constantly busy road is a far cry from the unmade gravel track and the rural atmosphere of the photo from the1900’s. The book is available from Brian Davis, 31 Whinhams Way, Billericay CM12 0HD, price £13.99 + £2 p&p.

Major contemporaries were the MG Maestro efi which had much more of everything including space, driveability, road-holding and safety, while the Peugeot 205 GTi was incredibly fast but unforgiving, majoring on high power output in a small, very light car with no creature comforts. So today? The Golf has gone from podgy to overweight but is still reasonably fast, the MG was unfairly consigned to the history books, and Peugeot have struggled since the 80’s to emulate their early success with the 205. Yes, it looks like you get a lot of toys for the money. On the road the performance is rather raw with very unforgettably harsh suspension and an engine which was loud but needed lots of gear-changing to wring much performance out of it. Well yes, the mind is transported to the halcyon days of the Volkswagen Golf MK1 which in the early 80’s opened a new market sector for ‘hot hatches’ and despite over the years becoming podgy and bettered by other car makers, it paradoxically remains the iconic yardstick against which all other hot hatches are measured. HERE COMES 4 SUMMER: TECH FOR OUTDOOR LIVING

I

t’s amazing to think that we were still getting snow back in March: just weeks later and it’s June, which even the UK usually manages to get through without any blizzards. Who knows, we might even get a long hot summer this time – and if we do, technology is happy to help. If you’re planning to party on the summer equinox, the longest day of the year, it’s worth getting some longlasting gadgets such as the UE Boom 2 portable speaker. It’s loud but not too loud, portable but not too small, and it’s waterproof

Technology

1 because it’s sold in Britain. At around £93 it’s pricier than many but is solid, sounds great and is well made – plus the battery lasts for 15 hours of tunes from a single charge. It’s a really great speaker for outdoor entertaining.

OLIVER CHIMNEY SWEEP

If you’re barbecuing, technology can help. The superb Looftlighter (around £45 on eBay or £55 in the shops) can ensure charcoal lights instead of smokes, and a BBQ thermometer can make sure food is properly cooked. We love the Thermapen instant read thermometer (around £50) but for an even

more high-tech option there are Bluetooth-enabled meat thermometers that send readings to your smartphone so you don’t even need to lift

2

the lid. Weber’s excellent iGrill 3 (£89.99) is one of the best around, but there are more affordable options too.

which has to be connected to your internet router. Sadly, living in the UK means even a warm day doesn’t stay too warm for long, and many of us turn to outdoor heating. Don’t buy a heater that heats the air; it’s a waste of money, because most of the energy goes on heating the air nobody’s actually in. Gas heaters are the least efficient: consider a modern infra-red (not near-infra-red) electric heater, which heats the surfaces it’s pointed at (including people), or a halogen one if you don’t want to spend a few hundred pounds. A good tabletop or free-standing halogen heater doesn’t cost too

There’s a new entry in the outdoor lighting market: Philips, which has brought its Hue smart lighting system to gardens too. We love Hue for its ability to create all kinds of light “recipes” and effects and to do so from a phone or tablet, and you can now mix 16 million different colours outdoors too. The catch, inevitably, is cost: the wallmountable Lily spotlight is about £260 and the 3 pedestal lamp around £125. It might be worth waiting for rivals to follow Philips’ lead: Hue-style indoor bulbs much to buy or run – are widely available (fire prevention &about emission for a lot less than Philips 9preduction) per kilowatt hour, chargers and we’d expect the with heaters starting at around same to happen with outdoor £39 – but make sure your (for advice & replacement of allistypes) lighting too. Don’t try and seating area sheltered as a cut corners with normal Hue stiff breeze can undo the work bulbs in standard lamp fittings of any outdoor heater. unless those fittings are large and properly (allwaterproof. work is carriedThey out in a clean & professional manner at all times) 1. UE Boom 2 portable speaker might not work anyway: your home’s exterior walls may 2. looftlighter barbecue lighter info@oliver-chimney-sweeps.co.uk block the connection between 3. SDF money available for Community Projects

he Cranborne Chase AONB has a small fund available to support community projects in 2018/19 within the area via the Sustainable Development Fund (SDF). Past projects supported include the Deverills Festival, the restoration of historic fingerposts in Gussage All Saints and a groundbreaking crayfish research project on the River Allen.

The fund supports projects that bring social, environmental and economic benefits to the AONB. It aims to develop and test new methods of achieving a more sustainable way of life. The exact amounts of the awards differ from year to year, dependent on budget, but projects typically receive £500-£1,000. It is important to remember two things: • The grant must be spent in the financial year (1 April – 31 March) in which it is awarded. • Successful applicants will be expected to help publicise the Fund and the AONB.

Examples of the types of projects that might be eligible for awards are: • Community shops and local products. • Projects that work with dis advantaged young people. • Fund raising events for community action; so that the funds raised are not used in putting on the event. • Projects to develop sustain able technologies, such as renewable energy shemes. • Projects that communicate and celebrate the history and culture of this area. This is a fund that seeks to foster innovative ways of working and living in the AONB, so we hope that you will come up with ideas that we have never thought of. If you think that your project fits the bill, you can apply online at http://www.ccwwdaonb. org.uk/our-work/grants-funding/

Carry On Camping by Kate Duggan

Parenting

C

ampfires, bike rides, toasted marshmallows, bug hunts, star gazing … there’s a lot of fun to be had on a family camping trip. Camping on a budget While camping is one of the most wallet-friendly ways to holiday, the equipment doesn’t always come cheap. Try searching Ebay, Gumtree and Facebook for secondhand tents. You’ll often find people selling a full camping package, including tent, airbeds, gas stove and chairs. Do you have Tesco points to spend? You can pick up a 4-man tent from Tesco Direct for around £50. Rent a tent Love the idea of camping, but don’t have space for all the equipment, or just don’t fancy pitching a tent in the rain? Why not rent a tent? Your tent will be put up for you and you can even hire all the equipment to go with it. All you need to do is turn up, unpack and head to the beach. Search online for companies or ask your chosen campsite for recommendations. If you want a few more mod-cons, you could look into hiring a campervan or caravan. Try www.camperbug.co.uk for retro VW campervans. Where to go We really are spoilt for campsites in the UK. There

are literally hundreds to choose between, from tiny farm fields to entertainmentfilled holiday parks. The National Trust has lots of smaller, peaceful sites on offer, including in the Lake District, Cornwall and Snowdonia; see www.nationaltrust.org.uk. Camping festivals Kids entertainers, live music, food and drinks stands, craft tents … some festivals are fun for the whole family. Check out: Cornbury (13th – 15th July): The line-up for this year’s festival includes Alanis Morrisette, Amy Macdonald and Pixie Lott. The Oxfordshire festival also boasts a kids’ area, with discos, yoga, den building, circus skills, live shows and craft activities; see www.cornburyfestival.com. Bluedot Festival (20th – 22nd July): Set in the grounds of a deep space observatory in Cheshire, Bluedot offers children’s areas, live shows, handson activities, animations, interactive experiments, and a line-up that varies from The Chemical Brothers to The Halle Orchestra. Science lovers will be in their element; see www.discoverthebluedot. com. Camp Bestival (26th – 29th July): This Dorset festival includes onsite camping in the ticket price.

There are craft workshops, a circus school, live shows, a 50 foot inflatable whale to explore, demos by Mister Maker and other popular presenters, and a lot more besides; see www. campbestival.net. Farmer Phil’s Music Festival (10th – 12th August): With a week’s camping included in the £80 ticket price and tickets for under-12s priced at just £2, this is a great festival for families on a budget. It’s a much smaller festival than many of the others, but there are plenty of bands and lots of activities for children. Beautiful Days (17th – 19th August): With a huge children’s area, hands-on workshops, live entertainment, bushcraft, story-telling, a free shuttle bus to and from the local train station and a carfree camping field reserved for families, Beautiful Days is ideal for a weekend away; see www.beautifuldays.org. Other family-friendly festivals worth considering include Chagstock (www. chagstock.info), Nozstock (www.nozstock.com), Just So Festival (www. justsofestival.org.uk) and Deer Shed Festival (www. deershedfestival.com). Check out www.festivalkidz.com for more recommendations, reviews and advice.

Silent Soldiers on parade at Ferndown R.B.L.

wo Silent Soldiers, representing the Fallen of World War One have been installed in the Ferndown Garden of Remembrance at the Royal British Legion in Church Road, as part of the 2018 commemorations of the end of the ‘War to end all Wars’. The soldier figures will keep a silent vigil throughout the year and all seasons of the garden which is open to all wanting to spend a few moments of calm remembering friends and family no longer with us or just far away. Silent Soldiers are available to individuals and companies from the Royal British Legion with all profits going to the Poppy Appeal. H

How hot is too hot to walk a dog on a pavement ?

D

ogs can suffer burns to their paws on days most people wouldn’t consider searingly hot. If the outside temperature is a pleasant 25C (77F), there’s little wind and humidity is low, asphalt and tarmac can reach a staggering 52C (125F). This can rise to 62C (143F) when the mercury hits 31C (87F). It’s worth bearing in mind that an egg can fry in five minutes at 55C (131F) while skin destruction can occur in just one minute at 52C (125F). The reason pavements get so hot is they

soak up heat all day and then retain that heat. “A simple test is to take your own shoes off and stand on the path. If you are unable to keep your feet on the path for five seconds, then it is not safe to walk your dog.” Walking dogs during hot summer temperatures can lead to heatstroke, which can be fatal. Protect your dog by walking early mornings and evenings. If you have to walk during the day try to keep to grass. Make sure you take water with you not only to drink but to cool off your dogs paws if the worst happens.

early 20 Gardens in and around the Town of Wimborne Minster are to be opened on Sunday 24th June, Midsummers Day, from 11.00 am to 5.00 pm to raise funds for Wimborne in Bloom. Pay £6.00 at the first garden visited. Start at any garden and in any order. Well signposted throughout the Town. There will also be an information Table in the Town Square. Once again the event is being held in the morning as well as the afternoon. Why not enjoy a day out and see some lovely gardens at

A Bloomin’ good quiz evening!

he 25th annual Wimborne in Bloom Wine & Wisdom Quiz took place in March. Wimborne Civic Society narrowly beat The Minster Churchmice – amazingly the same 1st and 2nd as 2017 – to win a bottle of wine each and retain the Eco-Composting Shield whilst Does Grey Matter was third. The raffle raised over £500 to contribute to the total raised for the evening

of approx. £1500 – again boosted by the Barclays Bank Matched Fundraising within their work in the community programme. The funds raised make an excellent contribution to the costs of providing the floral displays in the Town when Wimborne will be representing the South and South East Region in the Town Category in the ‘RHS National Britain in Bloom’ competition.

Wimborne in Bloom Coffee Morning raises nearly £450

T

he Wimborne in Bloom Annual Spring Coffee Morning was held in May. Over 80 people attended and £447 was raised towards this years Campaign. The Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayoress Cllrs Robin and Mrs Sue Cook and the Mayor Elect Cllr Mrs Kelly Webb attended with the Deputy Mayor drawing the raffle as his last engagement of the year. Summer planting taking place at the end of May and the hanging baskets will go up in early June. We hope that we can have everyone’s support to ensure that the Town is looking its very best. Help is always needed so please contact the Chairman, Richard Nunn on 01202 888793. Photo shows Wimborne in Bloom Committee with the Britain in Bloom banner at the coffee morning.

he natural world is in full swing during June and July and life at Blashford Lakes Nature Reserve is abundant. Breeding birds on the site continue to fill the air with song as many will have mates producing a second brood. From the water’s edge to the woodland canopy, all over the reserve young birds will be fledging and gaining independence. Look out for the incredible stripy faces of Great Crested Grebe chicks on Ivy Lake and oystercatcher, lapwing and little ringed plover chicks on the shore of Ibsley Water. Keep your eyes to the ground mid-June for emerging toadlets – they are small, very well camouflaged and easily overlooked until one catches your eye and you realise you are surrounded. They dare not risk drying out so wait for a spell of wet weather when they emerge from the lakes en masse, covering the footpaths between the Centre and Ivy South Hide as well as other locations around the reserve.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust. www.hiwwt.org.uk

On a sunny day the air is filled with insect life with Red Admiral, Peacock, Comma and Speckled Wood butterflies all plentiful and the summery sound of chirruping crickets and grasshoppers will delight your ears. Blashford is ideal for dragonflies and damselflies as our range of habitats suit their lifecycle. They spend their early life around the wetlands but move into the woodland and grassland areas to hunt as adults. Take a walk down to Ivy South hide and you are quite likely to spot a grass snake basking in the warm summer sun. On Thursday 21st June from 2pm until 4pm you can join the Reserves Officer on a guided ‘Mid-Summer Bugs’ walk in search of summer wildlife, including dragonflies, butterflies and moths. Alternatively for a family friendly ‘Catch the Bug’ experience you can join our Education Officer in the meadow to discover the fascinating miniature world of grasshoppers, crickets, spiders and bugs galore on

Saturday 23rd June, from 2pm until 4pm. For both events please book by telephoning 01425 472760. During the breeding season many birds will have been in especially attractive plumage but now start to moult. The lakes here at Blashford can become home to hundreds of Greylag and Canada Geese as they carry out their moult. Whilst they are replacing old feathers for new, they are vulnerable to predators like foxes, so they use the lakes to stay safe. The Blashford Lakes Project is a partnership between Bournemouth Water, New Forest District Council and Wessex Water. The reserve is managed by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, a charity that aims to protect local wildlife and inspire people. For information on upcoming events visit our website: www. hiwwt.org.uk or phone: 01425 472760. For up-to-date wildlife information visit our blog: blashfordlakes.wordpress.com.

Inner and Outer Child It’s the image of the past that affects us the most. We all know of an adult who over reacts to situations, who can’t take any form of criticism, someone who feels like the victim, maybe sulks, becomes demanding or who cries when they don’t get their way. These behaviours may be obviously childlike and we are often shocked when we see them being displayed by an ‘adult’. The gradual accumulation of unfinished mental and emotional business can lead to chronic anxiety, fear, confusion, emptiness and unhappiness throughout all our life. Inside us all we still have the little child (the inner child) and the adolescent (the outer child) part of us reacting strongly to certain experiences and situations and the feelings we’re having in the present can be the feelings of this little child/adolescent from the past. The process of opening to the world of your inner child and getting to know where these feelings come from can change and enhance your choices and patterns of behaviour. The inner child is the emotional self, where our feelings live. When we experience joy, sadness, anger, fear or affection our child within is coming out. When we are being playful, spontaneous, creative, intuitive and curious we can experience our authentic self who we know to be deep within us. Besides the inner child we also have the adolescent child who can be responsible for us making unsuitable choices in our lives from eating one too many biscuits or drinking too much, to deciding to leave a relationship which is too loving or staying in an abusive relationship. The adolescent thinks he/ she is making choices that will keep the inner child from being hurt once again but in reality it makes situations worse than before.

By Christina Smith

Through Inner Child work we can easily turn our feelings inwards and connect directly with that part of us that can offer comfort and support. This is called self-nurturing or re-parenting which allows us to reclaim that wounded child. We can provide for ourselves all the love and support and positive regard we never had. Inner Child therapy is available at: www.allaboutme.email

Home Library Service needs volunteer coordinators

W

e are looking for volunteers to join our Home Library Service teams in West Moors and Ferndown and take on the coordination of the service

locally. The Home Library Service is provided by Dorset Library Service and delivered by Royal Voluntary Service volunteers. It is available free of charge to anybody who cannot easily get to their local library, either short term or long term. We provide a regular supply of books and/or talking books chosen individually and

a visit by a trusted volunteer, who they get to know over time. We would like somebody to join us to promote and develop this service locally. They would look after the volunteers and readers, and liaise with the Library staff and the Royal Voluntary Service, reporting to and supported by a Service Manager. Training and ongoing support will be available, and there is a team of local volunteer coordinators across Dorset who meet and support each other as required. Call 01305 236666 for more details.

Health Screenings: What’s Available? By Alison Runham

Health

S

creening programmes are designed to identify health problems at an early stage, and the NHS offer many free screening programmes, beginning before we’re born. PREGNANCY AND POSTNATAL SCREENINGS If you’re pregnant, you will usually be offered a blood test for hepatitis B, HIV and syphilis before you’re 10 weeks pregnant. Early treatment reduces the risk of passing infection to your baby. You’ll also be offered screening for thalassaemia and sometimes sickle cell disease before 10 weeks, as it’s important to establish whether you’re a carrier. Screenings for your unborn baby: • 8-14 weeks: a ‘dating scan’. This ultrasound checks your baby’s development and will confirm your due date and if you’re expecting more than one baby. • 10-14 weeks: screening for Down’s syndrome, Patau’s syndrome and Edwards’ syndrome. This combines a blood test with an ultrasound scan and can be done alongside your dating scan. • 18-21 weeks: The ‘midpregnancy anomaly scan’, an ultrasound to check for physical abnormalities. Soon after birth, babies are given a physical examination and a blood spot ’heel prick’

test for several inherited diseases including cystic fibrosis, plus a hearing test before 3 months of age. SCREENING FOR TEENS AND ADULTS Diabetics aged 12 and over: the annual diabetic eye test checks for early signs of damage to blood vessels in the retina. Women aged 25-64: Cervical screening (a ‘smear test’) detects changes that can be an early sign of cancer. Women aged 25-49 are screened every three years; women aged 50-64, every five years. Over 40s: You may be invited for a general health check every five years. Women aged 50-70: Breast screening via a mammogram can detect early signs of breast cancer. Women over 70 can self-refer. Over 55s: In some areas, bowel scope screening to detect bowel cancer is offered. 60 to 74-year olds: Every two years, you’ll be sent a home testing kit called the faecal occult blood (FOB) test. This detects blood in your stool, which indicates further testing is required. Men at age 65: Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) screening can detect dangerous swelling in the aorta. Men over 65 can selfrefer.

SCREENING COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE Although NHS screenings are offered to everyone eligible, it’s your choice whether to have them. Screenings and their results can cause anxiety and give rise to difficult decisions, especially where pregnancy screenings are concerned. There may be a small risk of false negatives and positives, and more tests may be required. However, remember that an hour or less spent at a screening could save your life (or that of a loved one). Diagnosing and treating conditions swiftly is the best way to reduce their impact and prevent them from becoming more severe. MORE INFORMATION While private health companies advertise additional screenings, some aren’t recommended by the UK National Screening Committee, as it isn’t clear that their benefits outweigh the harm they may cause. For more information, see the NSC’s leaflet on private screening: www.gov.uk/ government/publications/ leaflet-thinking-of-having-aprivate-screening-test/privatescreening-important-facts. To find out more about screenings and their pros and cons, you can read this NHS-recommended leaflet from Sense about Science, entitled Making Sense of Screening, available here: senseaboutscience.org/wpcontent/uploads/2016/11/ Makingsenseofscreening.pdf.

Lazy Days Wish List Planning to stock up on books for lazy days in the sun? Add these to your wish list…

Book Reviews

Finding Gobi – Dion Leonard This is the story of ultramarathon runner Dion Leonard and the small stray dog that joined him on his 155-mile race through the Gobi Desert. Dion becomes determined to offer the dog a home, but there’s an awful lot of red tape to get through, and then the dog disappears. This Sunday Times bestseller has also been rewritten as a picture book and as a young readers’ book, so do make sure you order the right version! Modern Women: 52 Pioneers – Kira Cochrane Modern Women is a celebration of some of the women who have shaped society and changed lives. Women such as Tegla Loroupe, who grew up with 24 siblings and half-siblings in Kenya, went on to win numerous marathons, and now runs a sports training programme for refugees. Activists, athletes, filmmakers

and even a circus strongwoman make up the 52. You’ll read about wellknown women as well as women who have been all but forgotten. In each case Cochrane has managed to unearth something new and inspiring. A fascinating read you’ll want to dip into time and time again. The Trick to Time – Kit De Waal Mona leads a quiet life in a seaside town – making her dolls, visiting the carpenter and helping grieving mothers. But how did she get here? What happened to the spirited young woman who set out seeking adventure, and the man she fell in love with? A beautiful read with engaging characters that covers issues as diverse as grief, immigration, mental illness and love. Now You See Her – Heidi Perks Charlotte only took her eyes off the little girl for a few minutes but when she doesn’t turn up, Charlotte is ostracised by the community and blamed by the media. And, of course, the little girl’s mother is never going to forgive her. But then the two women come under police investigation and something isn’t quite as it seems. A tension-filled thriller, with plenty of twists and turns.

All Things Bright and Strange – James Markert In the wake of WWI, Ellsworth Newberry is grieving for his wife and just wants to be left alone. But when a strange chapel is unearthed in the woods, Ellsworth may be the only one who can lead his community in a fight against an unknown, unseen enemy. Part Christian fiction, part horror, part historical fiction, All Things Bright and Strange starts strongly, but gets lost a little bit along the way. The Possible World – Liese O’Halloran Schwarz After his mother is killed, six year old Ben tells people that his real name is Leo, and that he has another mother. But no one believes him. Doctor Lucy is struggling to come to terms with her marriage breakup when she first meets the little boy. Clare is approaching her 100th birthday and decides to tell someone the story of her life before it’s too late. Three separate characters, whose stories (past, present or future) are interlinked. A thoroughly enjoyable read.

How We Fell in Love with Perfume by Catherine Rose

T

he word perfume is derived from the Latin per fumum, meaning ‘through smoke’. This is possibly because the perfumes of ancient civilisations were often incense-based. Today, true perfumes are a distillation of a certain percentage of oils in alcohol, with eau de toilette and eau de cologne being diluted versions. Although the Romans were well-known to be very fastidious in their toilet habits, perfume very much pre-dates them.

History

Used significantly across Asian cultures, it is believed perfume may have originated in Arabia – still sometimes described as ‘the land of perfumes’. The perfume formulas of a female Mesopotamian chemist known as Tapputi-Bellatekalim have been translated from a threethousand-year-old tablet written in ancient cuneiform script. In the ancient world, perfumes were much more than just pleasant smells – they were also revered. The Bible refers to a sacred perfume, only allowed to be used by priests, that was made from myrrh, cinnamon, cassia and sweet cane, and the ancient Egyptians believed perfume

was ‘the sweat of the gods’. Ancient Hindu Ayurvedic texts dating back to 3000 BC refer to perfume’s distillation. In India, a variety of fragrances were used in tantric rituals where women would be spiritually anointed with different oils for every part of their body. In 2004, the oldest evidence of perfume was discovered with the remains of a Bronze Age perfume ‘factory’ unearthed in Cyprus. It is thought that 13th century Crusaders brought back perfume from Palestine, and its use was eagerly taken up by Europe’s nobility. The Sun King Louis XIV, who ruled France from 1643-1715, loved perfume so much that his palace became known as ‘the perfume court’. One of his favourite perfumes, used to fragrance his shirts, was called Aqua Angeli (‘water of angels’) and consisted of, amongst other ingredients, nutmeg, cloves, jasmine, orange flowers, musk and aloe wood, all boiled in rose petal water. During this time, France became a force in Europe for the manufacture and supply of fine perfumes, and Grasse in southern France, renowned for

its natural variety of flowers, was a leading supplier. In England, where sanitation was also abysmal and disease rife, perfumes were not only worn; they were also kept inside jewellery and the heads of canes to be inhaled by the wearer for health-giving properties and to ward off illness. As well as essential oils from flowers and plants, ingredients for perfume were also derived from animal excretions. Castor was extracted from beavers, musk from male deer and ambergris from the sperm whale. In the 1800s, synthetic fragrances made an appearance, their less expensive ingredients allowing for the first mass marketing of perfumes, thus launching famous companies that are still around today such as Coty and Guerlain. Then in 1921, Chanel created her signature scent, Chanel No. 5, with the help of Grasse parfumier Ernest Beaux who had made perfumes for the Russian royal family. Under her direction, he gave her numbered samples to choose from – the rest is history. Today our love of perfume remains undiminished and fragrances are popular with both men and women. But one thing hasn’t changed in that, even used daily, perfume is still viewed as a gloriously indulgent and luxury item – pure olfactory pleasure in a bottle.
