Dear Readers,
n page 6 in this issue we have a brand new historical feature article called “Ferndown before the Bulldozers” which I hope those of you who think of Ferndown as a town will find fascinating. Like me, many of you have probably never realised that Ferndown was of course originally just a small village with gravel roads, a scattering of shops and certainly no traffic lights! Each article will give us a fascinating glimpse of a village in transition during the past 60 years. This issue’s article tells us about Ferndown’s 1st lady Firefighter and the Fire Engine that caught fire! Ooops! Unfortunately this issue sees the last in our stories of rescued cats since we have published all of Patricia’s current stories. “Viewed From
with best wishes,
My Window” encompassed all the ups and downs and highs and lows of caring for stray cats and will be missed by many of our readers who are animal lovers out there - my husband for one! Patricia’s book is still available though so look for the details on page 16. Maybe we’ll be treated to an occasional feature in the future as I believe another cat has recently arrived! October 29th sees the clocks go back so a good idea to get out in the country before then! For local events and activities check out our What’s On pages 22 and 24 or our website. If you would like more members in your club or society, and/or would like us to publish your news, articles or future events, then simply e-mail the details to: info@roundaboutmags.co.uk.

Ferndown before the Bulldozers Less than 60 years ago Ferndown was just a village, with gravel roads, a scattering of shops and not even a set of traffic lights. Then the bulldozers arrived and much of Ferndown’s history disappeared forever. Part autobiography and part history, these articles are a fascinating glimpse of a village in transition.
W
Ferndown’s first Woman Firefighter
ith such a dire shortage of manpower during and just after the war, it might have been expected that anyone offering their services as a firefighter would have been welcomed with open arms. But this was far from the experience of Joyce Wareham, who lived in Ferndown. Joyce badly wanted to join the retained firemen, mainly local shopkeepers who would shut up shop and race to any emergency. Joyce, whose parents ran a fish and chip shop not more than a couple of hundred yards from the fire station, argued that she could get there and change into uniform as quickly as any of the men. She admits to being a tomboy, and managed to get a small foot in the fire-service door when she was taken on as a telephonist in 1941. She was based in the “new” fire station which had been converted from a Methodist chapel when it suffered a big loss of congregation and was sold to the local council for £1,250. She worked six-hour shifts for 1s 6d (7½ pence) a shift. But her ambition was to be a real firefighter. She said: “In those days
Joyce seated - bottom row - right
women were never allowed to ride on the appliances. Then just after the war I was told by Station-officer Chick that I could remain with the brigade and attend at the station for fire calls and drills, though without pay. But the men generously gave me sixpence (2½p) each from their 10 shillings (50p) turnout money.” Eventually, after quite a battle to be allowed to take her place on the fire-engine, Joyce became the first female firefighter in Dorset. She remained in the service for 30 years. “I loved the job,” she said. Many fires around Ferndown were heathland blazes, and in 1953 one of them resulted in a few red faces at the station. Flames had raced through the crackling pine trees gorse and heather, and suddenly they enveloped the parked fire appliance which was completely destroyed. “For Whom the Bell Tolled” declared the story in the following day’s Daily Mirror. An embarrassing moment, but Ferndown’s firefighters were far from incompetent, and in the same year won the Dorset Fire Service major pump drill competition. The book is available from Brian Davis, 31 Whinhams Way, Billericay CM12 0HD, price £13.99 + £2 p&p.

head to generate a winner. Walking up to this car in the ‘Flair’ variant is visually striking with a new chunky shape featuring a stubby high bonnet, a contrasting roof colour and practical black extensions around the wheel arches, front, back and the ‘airbump’ panels let into the doors to offer side parking protection. Together with a superbly glossy white paint, a black roof and large alloy wheels, it looks a million dollars - the wide range of personalisation options help give this car a very special ‘look’. Open any door to be impressed by a funky interior displaying echoes of exterior colours, ‘mood’ lighting and a very generous helping of technology including instruments, 7” touch-screen and more personal technology connections than you can possibly imagine or use! So far, so good. My car came with the excellent light-turbo 1.5 litre ‘blue’ diesel featuring stop-start (with braking energy re-capture) and a 5-speed manual transmission. This gives crisp performance in this purposefully light car without setting the world on fire, while ensuring exhaust emissions less than 100mg and in line with Euro 6b. Just a word about emissions - current diesel engines complying with this latest standard have emissions equal to current petrol engines, so the mass hysteria which has been
generated about ‘dirty diesels’ certainly does not apply to this car - or indeed any other Euro 6b diesel car. We also need to be reminded that diesel fuel consumption is much less than petrol engines - this car was determined to exceed 56mpg at all times and that compares very favourably with petrol cars which use 30-50% more fuel. A big saving in your pocket, and for the environment. To drive, a very characterful car although I thought it could have easily used a 6th gear for the motorway - or their excellent automatic gearbox. Handling was excellent with a lot of electric assistance at walking speeds, while on the motorway being ‘idled’ to save fuel/emissions and to give a very direct, sporty steering feel. Thankfully this directness and control came without the horrid stiff ‘boy racer’ suspension which afflicts many of its competitors, also partly due to very comfortable and supportive bucket seats. On the safety front, this car had a whole host of safety features that are legally mandatory, plus speed limit warning, sign-reading, lane departure warning, coffee break alert, non-adaptive cruise control and emergency brake assist. Yes, I would be delighted to have one of these cars in my garage, although I suspect the huge choice of colour schemes on offer could lead to argument. I should be so lucky!

W
e may struggle to visualise the former Citroen C3, a car which struck a decidedly middle-of-theroad stance as an inexpensive small-medium hatchback with 5 doors, somewhere between a Fiesta and Focus in size, but offering class-leading space and economy. However, the rounded and ambiguous styling endeared it only to those who needed practicality and did not wish to be recognised. That having been said, as a used car buy the pricing, running costs and value are hard to beat. The old C3 would make a sound proposition for new drivers. So, to the new Citroen C3 which replaces it. How to describe it? Something funky, interesting, stand-out individual. This car is entirely new, much more radically styled and aggressive looking. It comes in a huge range of colour combinations and interiors - plus of course the wide range of peppy and economical power trains for which the Peugeot group is well known. Book Reviews
How to Stop Time – Matt Haig Tom Hazard looks like he’s 40, but he’s been alive for centuries. People notice when you age so slowly, so Tom has to change his identity every eight years – a new name, new job, new friends. Falling in love isn’t an option and it’s best not to get too attached to anyone, as they’ll only die. But Tom craves an ordinary life. Beautifully written, this book is begging to be devoured in one sitting. Home Fire – Kamila Shamsie After years of raising her younger siblings, Isma is free to live her own life and to start a career in America. Back in the UK, her sister, Aneeka, is struggling in a society that sees her hijab as a threat. Enter Eamonn, the son of a well-known London politician, who will have a lasting effect on both women. Entrepreneurial You – Dorie Clark If you’re fed up of the daily grind and fancy setting up on your own, this book might prove a good starting point. The tagline is a good indication of the content – ‘Monetize Your Expertise, Create Multiple Income Streams, and Thrive’. Now these three heroes find themselves ‘extracted’ from their untimely deaths, by a man with a time-machine who wants them to save the world. A thoroughly enjoyable read, with a tightly-written plot, great characters and plenty of action.

I
Ginger’s First Run - part 2
decided it was time our newest cat Ginger went out for a walk. Not sure how he would react outside, I picked him up and placed him on the grass. He never moved! He did not know what to do. Was he agoraphobic? Was the grass a reminder of being lost and alone after falling or jumping from the window of the upstairs flat? After a while I brought him back in. I decided that perhaps if he was on a harness it would be easier to encourage him to walk hoping he would enjoy the experience. Another day and suitably harnessed up, he did not want to know, but I persevered and managed to get just a few steps out of him. He lay in the long grass and surveyed the area. Buttercups, grass hoppers and butterflies, it was all new.
I felt reassured that at least he would not be running away, so the next day I took off the harness and hoped that would make a difference. I walked away, turned and called him to come. It took a while, but he did take a few steps, then a few more, but soon wanted to go back to the patio. Perseverance was the key and after a few days he was happy to follow me around the field garden and even tried to catch a moth hovering in the grass. Henry had decided to come with us, but then felt he needed a good run, so took off at high speed back to the patio. Ginger was mesmerised and was not quite sure what to do. It took just a moment or two, then he managed to summon up the courage and he also ran, at first slowly, then seemed to put on a spurt and ran as fast as he could across the grass, his long fluffy coat billowing against the wind. You could see the thrill and excitement in his face. He was so pleased with himself. This was obviously the very first time he had had a run in all his life, what a new experience! That was it, now he had to get outside every day and he would walk for a while and then just had to have a good run as fast as his little legs could carry him.
Now he had to be outside as much as possible. During the day he might sit on the grass just under the ‘dickie bird’ tree where we hang all the nuts and seeds and I have seen him jump high enough that he caught hold of the fat ball holder, but fortunately the birds had flown away. In the evening he will sit on the patio and watch the deer and even the badgers coming and going. He does not move and they do not mind him, oblivious to everything except the peanuts put out for them. Ginger is fascinated by everything The grass outdoors, even the wind in is a new his fur. experience for Ginger! From 2am, Ginger would start scratching the door to go out and would continue to do so until we had had enough of it and let him out so we could get back to sleep, but fortunately it did not take too long for him to get into the routine that he has to sleep at night and is not let out until we get up. Now he spends all day outside exploring and he must walk miles. It did not take long before he decided sachets of cat food were very tasty, crunchy biscuits and his favourite meaty sticks and even a try of any other tasty morsels on offer, all go to make up a splendid varied diet.. Ginger has a new home, he is friendly with everyone and he has the freedom he craved, so hopefully no more jumping out of windows! The full story and many more are in the book “Viewed From My Window” by Patricia Oliver price £15.00 + £2.50 p&p. For more details, contact Patricia on: 01202 826244. Any proceeds go towards the Veterinary and Welfare needs of the 16 feral cats currently in her care.

Gardeners In Glass Houses by Pippa Greenwood
Gardening
A
greenhouse is a purchase you won’t regret, literally transforming your gardening activities and opening up a whole new range of possibilities - but what should you consider? A greenhouse needs to be sited well away from large trees, to prevent shady conditions within, as well as falling branches or other tree debris damaging the glass and clogging the guttering. If you are going to want to install any electrical equipment, bear in mind that the further the greenhouse is from the existing supply, the more expensive it will be to install underground armoured cable. Choose the largest greenhouse your space and budget allows, as many gardeners end up wishing for something larger. But any greenhouse is better than none, so if 4ft x 4ft is the only option, then still go for it! Most greenhouses have a frame made from wood or metal (typically aluminium). Many prefer the look of wood, but it will need regular maintenance unless it is
western red cedar. Whichever you choose, make sure it is sturdily constructed, especially if you live in a windprone area. Plenty of ventilation helps reduce the temperature, particularly in the height of summer, preventing damage to plants or even their death. It also improves air circulation, so reducing problems with plant diseases. Consider roof vents, which aid air circulation and efficient loss of excess heat. Make sure that greenhouse doorway is wide enough for easy access - ideally wide enough to push a wheelbarrow through, as this makes jobs such as changing the soil or bringing in compost easier. A greenhouse should be erected on a solid base - perhaps paving slabs, concrete or bricks - or on a skirt or surround of paving or concrete. A solid path up the centre is practical and can be combined with an open bed up one or both sides. A bed has the advantage that it can be filled with quality soil and planted directly, making maintenance of crops like
tomatoes straightforward. A solid base means greenhouse crops must be grown in containers. I recommend greenhouse staging, usually made from slatted wood or metal, as a perfect place to stand seed trays, pots and propagators. Most greenhouses are fitted with horticultural grade glass, but this can be replaced with safety glass or reinforced glass if the garden is used by children. Plastic, polythene or corrugated plastic ‘glazing’ are also available; these are generally lower cost and less of a potential hazard - but check how long they will last and consider how they will look. Useful extras include: shading; guttering and a linked in water-butt; and an electrical supply, which allows heating, lighting, fans and installation of a heated propagator. My Top Reasons for Getting a Greenhouse • You can grow a wider range of crops with ease. • It provides a longer growing season. • You can raise plants from seed and save money. • It will dramatically reduce the risk of problems such as tomato blight. • Plants get plenty of natural light and are more likely to thrive. • It makes a perfect gardener’s hide-away!

Windows wisdom needed at Wimborne Model Town
W
imborne Model Town is using 3D digital printing in an on - going upgrade programme for its miniature buildings. The 1950s vintage charity attraction is keen to hear from local people with information on the design of the windows in the old Methodist chapel that stood in King Street and was demolished in the 1960s. Model Town Manager Greg Hoar. said “Our volunteer Penri Jones has been working hard transforming the windows in our mini Minster, and now it is the turn of the Methodist Chapel. We would be delighted to see any close up colour images that may exist of the old Chapel,” The Model Town can be contacted by email on: info@wimborne-modeltown.com or 01202 881924.

utumn is a colourful time of year at Blashford Lakes, with the trees displaying ceilings of golden leaves and fungi beginning to emerge on the woodland floor. On your visit to the reserve, look out for the popular fly agarics along with shaggy inkcaps, earth stars, amethyst deceivers and the more subtle but aptly named candle snuff fungus on the tops of logs. On the water duck numbers will be increasing, including gadwall, pochard, tufted duck, teal, shoveler, wigeon and golden eye. As we enter the busy bird season at Blashford Lakes you may be considering investing in some new binoculars to enhance your bird watching experience. Why not join ‘In Focus’, optics and binocular specialists, for one of their regular events to try out different binoculars and telescopes in the bird hide and find out what is best for you. These events usually take place on the first

Tuesday of the month from 10am-4pm in the Tern Hide. The bittern is likely to return late October, although they will become increasingly easier to spot towards the end of the year as the reeds die back. If you would like to explore the reserve with an expert then why not join Reserves Officer Bob Chapman on a guided walk in search of the last summer visitors and first winter arrivals on Wednesday 18th October from 10am until 12noon. Please telephone to book your place. This time of year is brilliant for watching the birds coming into roost on Ibsley Water; thousands of gulls, geese and goosander use the lakes as their resting place as it provides a safe refuge after dark. As well as looking out for roosting birds you can also watch out for bats emerging for their night’s feed and listen out for dark bush crickets who can be heard chirping at this time of year. Our conservation volun-
teers have been hard at work doing a brilliant job as they help the Reserves Officer to strim back rush, bramble and small willows around the edges of the lakes to help maintain short grassland habitat for wintering ducks and lapwing. They will also be pollarding our large willow stands creating many bundles of willow withies. Why not try out a new skill and create a masterpiece using the willow withies pollarded from Blashford Lakes (bundles are yours for a reasonable donation). The Blashford Lakes Project is a partnership between Bournemouth Water, New Forest District Council and Wessex Water. The reserve is managed by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, a charity that aims to protect local wildlife and inspire people. The Courage To Be Yourself
By Christina Smith
M
any people are upset when their relationships are over because they are unable to feel a sense of resolution. They spend time trying to work out what went wrong, often trying to understand the nature of the other person so that they can somehow resolve the situation. A person might say ‘I’m so upset because if they really knew who I was then things would be different.’ This is mostly because either they and/or their partner was not able to be their true selves, become vulnerable, ask for what they want, air their grievances, express their fears, and be truly known. Usually this is because they fear rejection, upsetting the other person or fear losing the relationship. However, this is a crucial relationship ingredient and without it long lasting commitment may be difficult to achieve. Having the courage to be yourself doesn’t mean being controlling, demanding or officious. Letting yourself be known means talking to people honestly, calmingly working through differences and facing up to the reality of the situation. It ultimately means saying ‘I don’t agree,’ ‘I don’t like that,’ ‘I feel scared/uncomfortable,’ ‘I don’t agree,’ ‘I’m feeling angry.’ For some people the fear of being known stops them from saying ‘I love you,’ or ‘I am so happy!’ The thought of letting their guard down enough to become vulnerable can be very scary indeed. Sometimes love is too precious for words. In other words, people can fear that asking too many questions or saying

Reims A Royal City at the Heart of Champagne By Solange Hando
I
Travel
n the Champagne region, just 45 minutes east of Paris, the colourful city of Reims owes its fame to history and some of the world’s most illustrious vineyards. Here champagne is almost an everyday treat, but on special occasions you might meet the lovely Queen of Champagne draped in a crinoline holding up to 100 glasses, full to the brim. The Romans planted the vines and by the end of the first millennium, the wine had earned its place on royal tables. This was a still white wine made from black grapes but, when bottled, bubbles arising during the second fermentation could cause explosions. Even Dom Pérignon, the local monk who greatly improved it, tried hard to suppress them. Yet as early as 1531, sparkling wine had been successfully produced in Limoux near Carcassonne, and when the problem was eventually solved in Champagne, sparkling wine quickly gained favour. Today, champagne is on the scene wherever you go in this endearing city, even in the cathedral. Almost totally destroyed in WWI, Notre-Dame has been painstakingly rebuilt, including its old stained glass windows, including a panel dedicated
to wine making and Dom Pérignon. Bright contemporary windows by Chagall are a stunning contrast, while the latest addition is a gift from Angela Merkel as a sign of reconciliation. Many of the statues and sculptures are copies of the originals which are kept in the adjoining Palais du Tau, the former archbishop’s palace, alongside royal treasures. Royal? Just walk down the aisle and you will see a plaque marking the spot where Clovis, the first King of the Franks, was baptized by St Rémi on Christmas Day 496, followed by 3,000 of his men. According to legend, the king was anointed with a miraculous oil carried by a dove. The oil was later stored in St Rémi’s Abbey and only brought to the cathedral for coronations, returned to its rightful home after the ceremony in exchange for hostages the monks kept just in case. Altogether 25 French kings were crowned in Reims Cathedral, the last one in 1825. Most notable perhaps was Charles VII, who regained his throne during the Hundred Years War aided by the charismatic Joan of Arc. Charging on horseback, sword drawn, her statue rises dramatically in front of the cathedral.
Back in town, trams glide quietly through the streets while visitors and locals lunch on Erlon Square, ‘ the Champs-Elysées’ of Reims, guarded by the slender Subé fountain and its Victory statue. Others relax in the parks, wander around gleaming stores and quaint shopping arcades or head for St Rémi, now a basilica, the Fine Arts Museum or the ‘Musée de la Reddition’ where at 2.41am, on May 7th 1945, the German High Command surrendered unconditionally to the Allies in the school which served as their headquarters. Today, Reims hosts concerts and exhibitions all year round, first class theatre shows and festivals, celebrating Champagne, folk culture or the legendary Joan of Arc. But no visit to the city would be complete without a guided tour in a Champagne House, such as Veuve Cliquot, named after a 27 year old widow who in 1804, well ahead of her time, took over her husband’s business. Cavernous chalk pits, originally dug by the Romans for building material, are now the Cliquot wine cellars, a vast underground maze stretching for 25km on three levels and storing 100 million bottles of champagne in perfect conditions.

HIGH TECH HORRORS When your gadgets go bump in the night
ome of the scariest things don’t make very good costumes: nobody’s going to go to a fancy dress party as The Laptop Full Of Orange Juice, The Stolen Smartphone or The Family Photos That Got Deleted By Accident. But unfortunately such horrors do exist. How can you ensure that they don’t give you nightmares? The first step to avoid any kind of digital disaster is to have backups of anything important. You can do that in several ways: you can copy files to an external hard disk; you can upload them to an online service such as Microsoft OneDrive or Yahoo’s Flickr; or you can backup to CD-R or DVD. That latter option is the least safe, though, because discs can easily be lost or damaged. We prefer the online option, as it ensures our backups are kept far, far away in the event of emergency. Keeping up-to-date backups means that even if your hardware suffers a horrible fate, your important files - your family photos, perhaps, or the book you’re secretly writing don’t go with it.
If your device is lost or stolen there are a few things you can try. Apple and Android phones and tablets have a “find my device” option - for Apple it’s Find My Phone in iCloud, and in Android it’s google.com/android/find. The latter even includes Android TVs, if you have one. You can use the services to make the device play a sound if you think you’ve just put it somewhere nearby or to display a message urging the finder to call, but you can also use them to lock the device and erase all the data on it, rendering it useless to any thief or to anyone who finds it. One of the most common digital disasters is water damage: a drink spilled on a laptop, or a smartphone dropped in liquid. If that happens to you, stop immediately - and we mean immediately, because every second counts - and turn it off; if it’s a laptop, turn it upside down so the keyboard is facing downwards and the liquid can drip out. Wipe any wet surfaces, unplug every cable and leave it on top of a towel for at least 24 hours in a warm, dry place. Don’t try to fast-forward by using a hair dryer, as its heat can damage delicate components. When you’re absolutely sure it’s dry turn it back on and look for signs of weird behaviour: if it doesn’t work properly, you’ll need to take it to a
repair shop. With phones the process is much the same, but you might get better results if you put the phone in a bag of uncooked rice. Rice is ultra-absorbent and can help dry your phone out more quickly. As for our final horror, accidentally deleted files, you can get them back if you move quickly. That’s because when you trash a file it doesn’t actually get deleted; instead, it’s marked as “okay to over-write”. If you can get to it before it’s overwritten you can usually
get it back, even if you’ve emptied the recycle bin. Our go-to app for recovering files is Recuva (www.recuva.com), which works on Windows, on camera memory cards and on USB sticks too. There’s a free version for simple recovery jobs.

ighter, summery shades of lipsticks tend to give way to warmer, deeper hues as the weather gets colder. This autumn, we’ll be seeing two extremes when it comes to lip colours – ‘barely there’ and deep berry shades. Clarins have brought out three new shades of their bestselling Joli Rouge lipstick – Deep Red, Litchi and Guava. Brighter shades can be difficult to carry off, but these three are surprisingly wearable. They’re also formulated with mango oil and other moisturisers, to leave your lips feeling softer and more hydrated. £20, www.clarins.co.uk. Autumn might be just around the corner, but that’s no reason to ditch the sunscreen. As well as helping to reduce the risk of skin cancer, protecting your skin also helps to prevent visible damage, including pigmentation and wrinkles. If time is an issue, you’ll love Origins’ Ginzing SPF40 Energy Boosting Tinted Moisturiser. Suitable for all skin types, it protects, moisturises
and conceals in one go. Personally, I love it – the colour is very natural, it’s easy to apply, and it doesn’t feel too heavy. £30, www.origins. co.uk. Crabtree & Evelyn have brought out a new range of body care products to complement their flower water perfumes. Choose from Florentine Freesia, Venetian Violet and Old World Jasmine. Each fragrance is available in a hand cream, body lotion, body cream, bath & shower gel and flower water. Old World Jasmine is a personal favourite, with its subtle fragrance of white jasmine, orange, lemon and spring flowers. Try the Old World Jasmine bath & shower gel, which features skinloving ingredients such as moringa, evening primrose and rosehip oils. £18, www. crabtree-evelyn.co.uk. The fine hair range, for example, includes extracts of lavender, grapefruit and ginger, as well as rosemary leaf oil and sage oil. Together, they help to give extra body to limp locks and reduce hair loss. There are ranges to suit most hair types, so whether you want some
