Welcome I
April / May 2016

Dear Readers,
’m sitting here listening to yet another of this Easter’s hailstorms if you recall - especially after we had such a lovely sunny Good Friday. Hopefully you were able to enjoy the one day of sunshine we did have like many did. We were out cycling around the New Forest on Good Friday and were amazed at the number of visitors who suddenly appeared - Bolderwood car park was overflowing and it was great to see so many people enjoying themselves after such a wet and windy winter. My husband was wearing his usual Bicycle Repair Man superhero persona and helped an unfortunate young couple from London to mend a pretty horrendous puncture and avoid the long trudge back to Burley! Hopefully they made it without another!
with best wishes,
Apart from cycling this issue features details of all sorts of other hobbies you might like to start. From joining a choir, and modelmaking to indoor gardening, local history or even twitching! NOW and THEN
G
Greyfriars, Christchurch Road.
reyfriars in Christchurch Road is one of Ringwood’s best known and loved buildings, described by Pevsner in his ‘Buildings of England’ as ‘the showpiece among Ringwood houses’. Today Greyfriars is proudly recognised as an outstanding Community Centre for the town and surrounding district. Deeds show that it was built as a private house around 1783 by a wealthy widow named Mary London as a gift for her niece Mary Field and her husband. Seven years later they sold the house to Mary Field’s brother Alexander Carter and his wife Elizabeth. At that time the house was known as London House (often corrupted to Lonnens) after its generous benefactress. In 1802 Alexander Carter took over his father-in-law’s brewery and four years later moved his large family into Bridge House in West Street next to this brewery. London House was then let to his uncle William Tice, a retired widower. Following William’s death in 1824 Alexander Carter sold London House to another retired gentleman, Admiral Sampson Edwards. It was during Admiral Edward’s time that the house name appears to have been changed to Greyfriars, for reasons unknown. When the admiral died in 1840 at the grand old age of 94, Greyfriars remained the home of his son, Captain Richard Edwards, for the next 36 years. Despite failing eyesight which culminated in blindness, Richard maintained a lively interest in the community of Ringwood, devoting much effort to promoting the new
1920
National School (now Ringwood Infants) and the rebuilding of the Parish Church. This community involvement was continued by a later family of residents, the Christys. Reginald Christy purchased Greyfriars in 1920. The old photograph shows the house at this time, covered in Virginia creeper. Mr Christy was a public-spirited man who served on the District Council and was one of the shareholders involved in bringing electricity to Ringwood. He was also very keen on Greyfriars’s beautiful garden, which in his day stretched right down to the Bickerley. His daughter Hilary shared his interests in the garden and the community and it is due to her generosity that the newly formed Ringwood & District Community Association was able to buy Greyfriars at a bargain price in 1959. Over the past 57 years a huge amount of work, dedication and energy has been given by its hundreds of volunteers to ensure Greyfriars Community Centre has gone from strength to strength. Greyfriars now employs two managers and a team of caretakers, but all other work in running the Centre is done by volunteers headed by Chairman Ann Pedersen. Ann is keen to stress that Greyfriars is a registered charity committed to serving the whole community and urges anyone who has never visited the building to pop in to see what it has to offer or consult: www.greyfriarsringwood.org.uk N.B. A booklet ‘The History of Greyfriars’ by Mary Baldwin is available from Greyfriars price £1.

Home & Interiors Planning a Master Bedroom By Katherine Sorrell
providing pleasing ambience and flexibility. For restful darkness for sleeping, ensure curtains have a blackout lining, or choose well-fitting shutters – which will block out noise, too.
Y
our bedroom is a highly personal space, but if you are considering selling, or want to enhance your property value long term, you’ll need to design it so it has general appeal, says Katherine Sorrell. Your first consideration when planning a master bedroom is comfort. Zone the space according to use – sleeping, dressing, exercising, checking your laptop, reading – perhaps drawing a scaled plan of the room to help with layout. It’s nice to have your bedhead opposite the window, for example, with a bedside table each side, but allow at least 450mm of space around the bed to give you enough room. Include plenty of storage: a wall of fitted wardrobes is a great option, and you can add free-standing pieces such as chests of drawers and blanket boxes for character and flexibility. It may also be possible to create a separate dressing area, using a tall bedhead, a bookcase or wide wardrobe as a partition. Although watching TV is not necessarily conducive to a good night’s sleep, it is still a lovely idea to include one in the bedroom – it’s ideal for a
Sunday lie-in. Fitted furniture manufacturers can provide cupboards from which TVs pop up or slide out, while music specialists offer all sorts of speakers and sound systems. You will probably also want a place for a landline phone, a small desk for your computer, e-reader or tablet, and somewhere to plug in a phone charger. Even in a bedroom, you can’t have too many plug sockets. Wall-to-wall carpet, especially pure new wool, is a good idea for a master bedroom but choose a high quality underlay for bounce and softness. Alternatively, combine underfloor heating with engineered wooden boards and rugs for a traditional look with character – and still enjoy warmth underfoot. The latter option also saves the space that the radiator would have taken up. Well-designed lighting is an asset in the master bedroom and though a central pendant is fine for general, overhead light, add wall-mounted reading lights beside the bed, a bright, adjustable light above your dressing table and perhaps a table lamp or two to create a gentle glow, thus
It is important to get the combination of bed linen and window treatments right when the bed is plain, some pattern at the window is lovely, and vice versa – simply avoid two patterns that clash. Plain curtains can look beautiful if made from a generous amount of fabric, hung from a pole with pretty finials at the ends, and finished with an edging of ruffles or a contrast border. If privacy is a problem, consider adding sheer or lace curtains. An en-suite - virtually a necessity nowadays - will make your home more saleable and may add value. A walk-in wardrobe could be converted to an en-suite (though a proper bath will need more room), or knock through and steal space from an adjacent room. Compact fittings can be effective in a tight space, but must be practical for regular use. Remember, the least expensive place to install an en-suite bathroom is close to other plumbing, particularly the soil pipe. And, because the room leads directly off the bedroom, install low-noise sanitaryware, dimmable lights and a high-powered extractor fan controlled separately from the light. IMAGE - Soft carpet, sumptuous curtains and a deeply buttoned headboard all add up to a sense of luxury. Huntington bed, £1,175, Sweetpea & Willow, tel: 0345 257 2627; www.sweetpeaandwillow.com.

New attractions at award winning Country Park.
E
ast Dorset’s award-winning country park is introducing some unusual new attractions this spring. Moors Valley Country Park and Forest is already home to a miniature steam railway, Go Ape, tree top trail, golf and miles of trails and cycle routes. Now the Park is adding archery and hawk walks to its busy event programme. Suitable for beginners as well as those with some experience, archery sessions begin on 28 March and then run on various dates until the end of August. You can book one hour slots at 9.30am, 10.30am and 4pm or just turn up between noon and 4pm on the same dates to try your hand with 10 arrows for £3.50. Go to the Moors Valley website for more information and booking. Hawk Walks is another new arrival at Moors Valley. On this intimate falconry experience you‘ll be able to enjoy the thrill of walking with free-flying Harris hawks (Parabuteo unicinctus), learning about these extraordinary birds and the ancient art of falconry as you recall the hawk to your fist. Led by a full-time falconer
with over 30 year’s experience this is a unique opportunity to spend time with these astonishing birds which can fly at speeds of up to 50 miles an hour. To book call Hawks in the Forest on 07954 522843. Moors Valley is also adding to its Season Ticket options this Easter to help more people who regularly visit the Park save money. The Park already offers three types of season ticket for visitors coming at ‘all hours’, those who are ‘early risers and late-comers’ or who like to visit during ’quiet times’. Within these three categories people can then opt for a season ticket which applies to either one car or two cars registered at the same address, which go to the Park at the same time. From Easter, the Park is extending this option so that two cars registered at the same address can visit the Park under the same season ticket provided only one is at Moors Valley at any point in time.
“Many of our visitors are regulars coming daily to walk dogs, enjoy family time after school, or attend activity programmes,” said Team Leader Clare Gronow. “With the addition of this new option we have tried to structure our Season Tickets to ensure there is an option for everyone, ensuring that the wide range of attractions and facilities at Moors Valley represent even greater value for money”. Season Tickets cost from £25 to £71 for a whole year and ticket holders also benefit from discounts at the Park and other attractions and shops in the area. For more information and details of all events go to www.moors-valley. co.uk or call 01425 470721.

What happened.......
T
he cleverest inventions often fail at what they’re intended to do but then go on to succeed brilliantly elsewhere. I could write a list, but seeing that 6th April 1966 is perhaps the most significant date in its history, let’s focus on one outstanding example: the hovercraft. We tend to think of the hovercraft as a product of our own age, and indeed it is; but the advantages of minimizing or even eliminating contact between hull and water have
long been obvious. The first patent in hovercraft design was taken out by John Thornycroft (as in Vosper Thornycroft) way back in 1877 - but his was the age of steam, and no suitable engine existed. Once petrol engines were available, designers became interested in contactless or reduced-contact motorboats again - but now their inspiration was aviation technology, and between 1915 and 1940 prototypes of various steppedhull and hydroplane coastal craft were built in AustroHungary, Finland, the USSR, the USA amongst others. World War II put a stop to these developments, but in the 1950s a Norfolk boatbuilder, Christopher Cockerell, decided
...50 years ago? by Ted Bruning to revisit Thorneycroft’s patent. Light but powerful engines were plentiful, and Cockerell was also able to design a way of swirling the air cushion on which his hovercraft would ride that made it more efficient still. At last, a craft that would rise clear out of the water! Cockerell’s design won the support of the National Research Development Council, which licensed his 1955 patent to a number of builders including Saunders-Roe; and on 11th June 1959 the four-seater 28mph SR-N1 (Saunders Roe Nautical 1) was launched. The craft was then shipped to Calais and on 25th July made the first Channel crossing by hovercraft. It wasn’t the first into service, though – that honour went to the rival Vickers-Armstrong 3, which started a scheduled ferry service across the Dee between Rhyl and Wallasey in July and August 1962. The second, launched in the same year, used a new Saunders-Roe hovercraft, SR-N2, to cross the Solent between Ryde and Southsea – a service that still runs today, albeit with rather more modern craft! But the Channel was the challenge, both technically and commercially. It was open sea, the weather could be rough, and hovercraft had not so far proved themselves terribly robust (the VA-3’s career was ended by a storm). But the potential pickings were rich: international travel was becoming more affordable

and more popular, and Dover and Folkestone were at full stretch. So, on that April day 50 years ago, the 38-seater SR-N6 raised itself up on its rubber skirt (an improvement designed not by Cockerell but by a naval officer called Latimer-Needham), trundled down the Ramsgate beach that would be the service’s home for the next 16 years, and set off on the 40-minute, 35-mile journey to Calais. Connecting coaches would take passengers on to Paris for £3.7s.6d or Brussels for £2.7s.6d. Cheaper and faster they might be, but crossChannel hovercraft never really challenged the ferry’s supremacy. Like the British airliners, the Trident and the VC-10, there wasn’t enough demand for them to justify a permanent production line: the later models even had to cannibalise each other for spare parts. The oil crisis of the early ‘70s made them less competitive; the opening of the Channel Tunnel in 1994 proved a fatal blow. The last two were retired in September 2000, just a year after the death of their inventor. Hovercraft are, of course, still in use around the world as coastal search and rescue vessels, as military transport and assault craft, as buses using frozen Alaskan rivers in winter, although they’ve never eclipsed conventional vessels as was once hoped. But the field in which they have proved most successful is one that Cockerell probably never expected: gardening. For in 1964 a Swedish engineer, Karl Dahlman, saw an early hovercraft in action...and invented the Flymo.

pring has certainly arrived, and Blashford Lakes has sprung to life. Leaves have been breaking bud and their brilliant fresh green colour is now filling the woodlands, along with the flowering ground ivy, bluebells and violets and carpets of yellow primroses. You may still have time to catch another spring flower, Town Hall Clock, but you have to look closely to appreciate why it is so special: each flower head is made up of five flowers displayed like the faces of clocks on a clock tower, hence the name. It is also known as Moschatel. If you listen carefully, you may be lucky to hear the first cuckoo of the year, along with a crescendo of song from the reserve’s migrant visitors, including garden, reed and willow warblers and reed buntings. Join staff on Sunday 10th April on a ‘Cuckoos, martins and much more’ walk in search of the first Spring migrants and possibly a few of the last Winter stragglers. Swallows, swifts and

martins will have made their impressive journeys back to our shores, displaying acrobatically over the surface of the lakes as they feed, whilst on the shore waders including little ringed plover, lapwing and dunlin will be showing as they too go in search of food. Birds will be actively locating nesting sites and building nests across the reserve, creating ingenious and cunningly disguised nests in branches or bushes, or taking advantage of one of the many nest boxes found on the site. Hopefully the sand martins will be investigating the sand martin wall outside Goosander Hide. To tune in to the calls of our birds at the peak of their Spring activity and learn to recognise some of their more distinctive songs, you can join reserve staff on a Spring Birds walk on Sunday 8th May. Caught on Camera: final part - Billy’s rehabilitation.
t the end of three weeks, Billy started moving about more readily and was getting used to balancing on his three legs, we even saw him exploring the house, probably looking for the exit, but we have to keep him in the house and we had yet to fully befriend him. His meows were now heard frequently, letting us know when his food bowls were empty; he eats a lot and does not have to ask twice. He does not like to be stroked, but I ignore his protestations, close his mouth and rub him under his chin, then stroke him gently over his head and down to his tail. He has threatened to bite but I know that he would not bite the hand that feeds him so I approach with confidence and will not succumb to threats. He very soon started to lick my hand when offered. A very happy Billy. He will be my ‘Billyboy’ you wait and see! Billy spends the day at the top of the stairs, but every evening, he manages to get down the stairs to greet the other cats when they come in for the night, he wants to be part of their family and follows them around, talking all the time in his own special way. Six weeks after Billy’s amputation and he was a totally different cat. He gets around relatively easily and now joins me on the settee, he enjoys a cuddle and a stroke, he allows me to pick him up as long as I do not hold him for too long and he loves to be with the other cats in the family. When food is served, if you are not quick enough he will balance on his hind legs and reach up with his one front leg to try and reach the plate of food, meowing very
loudly as if to say, “hurry up I’m starving!” With such a hot summer the year we took Billy in (2014), we needed to have the doors open, but we did not want Billy to go outside, so we constructed secondary mesh doors to front, back and patio doors to solve the problem. This gave us and Billy plenty of fresh air and he was happy to sit by the mesh door to watch the activities of the birds, badgers and the deer outside and of course enjoy the fresh air. His journey from being feral and free, through accident and suffering, amputation and depression, to house-cat, lap-cat, placid, contented and just a happy ‘pussy-cat’, has been achieved in less than two months through patience and the giving of love and attention to a poor little cat who had never experienced such things before, and in return he gives all he has to give, his love and gratitude, shown by his purring and contentment. He is now safe, comfortable and at peace in his own little world. What more could anyone ask for? I told you he would be my ‘Billy-boy’ and he is! The full story and many more are in the book “Viewed From My Window” by Patricia Oliver price £12.50 + £2.50 p&p. For more details, contact Patricia on 01202 826244. All proceeds go towards the Veterinary and Welfare needs of the 16 feral cats currently in her care.

Mike's Motors
By Mike Wattam
C
hoosing your ideal car is not easy. Do you go for your aspirations, or would it be more realistic to buy a mundane car you can easily and cheaply get serviced just around the corner? The more information available, the more difficult a rational choice becomes. I should know, being asked frequently what my ideal car would be - no sensible reply from this hack as my mood, aspirations and need of the moment change. At least until now. I think I have the answer - not just for myself, but also for SWMBO*. Volvo has been building cars with leading-edge safety, for many years. Their first modern car was the 1950’s Amazon, it oozed ‘macho-tank’ and it was. Take an involuntary excursion off-road and it was the scenery that got dented, not the car. Fast-forward through many ownership changes which Volvo endured throughout, to the present enlightened but arms-length investment by Geely of China. At last Volvo is able to flex skill and innovation without undue hindrance. Over the years, Volvo has struggled with oscillating brand identity, varying between ‘safe tank’ to ‘road racer’ to ‘capacious hold-all’. It has never been viewed as an alternative to the so-called ‘premium’ car makers. Volvo need to stamp an indelible new brand identity. Here is the new XC90, a wholly new luxury 4x4 limousine, full of Swedish design values.
It looks large but is only a few centimetres wider and longer than the ‘old’ XC90, while being noticeably lower. The large grille means business, while the exquisite external styling conveys an air of great thought and classiness in that typically Swedish, understated elegant way. Open the door to be greeted by a similarly top-notch crafted interior, blissfully absent of tasteless ‘bling’. Plenty of space is evident. Even the obligatory wood inlay on the fascia is a great lump of Scandi-wood and not a veneer stuck to recycled plastic. And it has seven adult seats as standard. And a standard auto gearbox. And a large vertical touchscreen controlling all major vehicle functions. And so many accident prevention aids, you would need a tree-full of sticks to be able to shake at them all. Things like active cruise, pedestrian detection, accident mitigation, autonomous car following, auto-park, lane-keeping. I could go on but recommend you spend a day on their website to explore all the standard and optional safety features. Sit in the most comfortable car seats imaginable, yet options hype them up even more - how about a massage, or bigger bolsters? The standard sound is great, but be thrilled by the optional British Bowers and Wilkins hi-fi which does the standard DAB radio justice. My car had the base engine, a
A car for all reasons.
2-litre diesel which was quiet starting up and without intrusion during use. What, only 2 litres? Yes, Volvo have decided that to minimise emissions, small highly turbocharged engines with massive torque are the way forward, and they have succeeded. This car is comparatively light, has great torque throughout the rev range, with a very smooth 8-speed auto transmission very carefully matched to the engine, giving good performance with excellent economy. Handling and road-holding
were top-drawer, standard Sport mode brings sharper power delivery and stiffened suspension, while optional air suspension gives a compliant and quiet ride. Overall test mpg was 42 including sprints to Dover and across half of Europe, using high speeds where permitted. In touring mode, 50mpg was achievable. Priced from £46,250, it’s a bargain compared against ANY similar Rangie. Specifications alternatives are sufficient to build a unique car choosing from diesel, petrol or hybrid, 2 trim levels and a shed-load of options. Will it fit my garage? I don’t care, as I’ll always be out in mine. I might even sleep in it.

Are you tired of being told that your aches and pains are just your age?
W
ell, here at Physiotherapy To Your Home, we believe that age doesn’t automatically mean that you have to sit still and take pain medication.
A targeted approach addressing your problems directly using a range of Physiotherapy and related treatments can soon have you back doing the things that you love to do. It’s true that as we get older the aches and pains creep in, but often Jane age isn’t the root cause. Sometimes it’s a cycle started by a small muscle pain or illness that means you sit for longer, allowing muscles to weaken, balance problems develop, reducing confidence and possibly leading to falls, losing your independence and other problems. As Chartered and State Registered Physiotherapists, we can help prevent and stop that

Spotlight on New Forest Jazz Workshop (NFJW)
t was founded fifteen years ago, by Derek Ayling, because, when he arrived in the area, there was nothing going on for amateur jazz musicians, who typically played their instruments up in their bedroom, or in their lounge, completely missing the most enjoyable, rewarding and necessary experience of playing with other musicians. Derek started by hiring Damerham Village Hall one Winter’s evening and was inundated with over 50 musicians, from whence evolved at least three jazz bands (“Roar Sextet”: remember them? The “Riverside Dixieland Band” and “Vanessa’s Villains”) Since then, the NFJW has grown from strength to strength, and is now well established on the local jazz scene. For twelve years, it ran an annual jazz weekend, at
A
Damerham Village Hall, which was always a complete sell-out, right from its first year. Now and again, the NFJW tries to get a small band together and take it to Vimoutiers in Normandy (Twinned with Fordingbridge) for the joint festivities of the Vimoutiers Apple Festival every October and the twinning celebrations of both towns. The NFJW is always seeking local musicians who would are prepared to join it for that weekend, and come along to Vimoutiers. The NFJW, as it is known, is entirely run by volunteers, and is a non-profit-making entity, existing entirely for the benefit of amateur jazz musician of all levels. For further details contact: Derek Ayling on 01425 650770 or by email: Hippotrain@btinternet.com

Older, But Not Always Wiser The main characters of these books may be in their twilight years, but they certainly aren’t content to sit back and spend their pensions on Werther’s Originals and bingo nights. With amateur sleuths, explosive experts and adventurers amongst them, they’ll keep you reading well past a sensible bedtime. Elizabeth is Missing – Emma Healey 82-year old Maud is determined to solve the mystery of where her best friend Elizabeth has disappeared to. While she’s at it, she’d also like to figure out what happened to her sister, who went missing more than 60 years ago. The problem is that Elizabeth has been getting a bit forgetful lately, and the clues keep getting muddled in her head. With twists and turns aplenty, you’ll be left guessing until the end. Definitely a ‘just one more chapter and then I’ll go to sleep’ kind of book. The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper – Phaedra Patrick Arthur Pepper likes the quiet life, but that all changes when he discovers a charm bracelet hidden away in his late wife’s things. Arthur’s cross-country quest to discover the meaning of each of the charms sees him uncovering a side to his wife he never knew existed. But will his new found knowledge help him come to terms with her death, or forever taint his memories of her? A thoroughly enjoyable read, with great characters and a page-turning storyline, this is Phaedra Patrick’s debut novel, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see her on the bestseller lists very soon.
The Extra Ordinary Life of Frank Derrick, Age 81 – J.B. Morrison Being run over by a milk float wasn’t on Frank’s to-do list for the day, and he sure as heck isn’t going to let some interfering home-help try to baby him. Nope, he’s quite content on his own, with his cat Bill, his DVDs and a series of cold callers trying to sell him things he doesn’t need. But home-help Kelly Christmas proves rather more likeable than he expected, and he starts to realise that life can indeed begin again at 81. With his biting sense of humour, Frank will keep you laughing all the way through this immensely entertaining book. George’s Grand Tour – Caroline Vermalle When George tells people he’s going to do the Tour de France, some are rather concerned. He is, after all, 83. However, George has a slightly less taxing plan in mind; he’s going to do the Tour by car, with a friend. Agreeing to check in with his granddaughter, Adele, by text along the route, he sets off across the country. In the end, the journey may prove as life-changing for Adele as it is for George, as she starts to really appreciate the man who, until now, has just been a name on her birthday cards. The Unlikely Pilgrimage Of Harold Fry – Rachel Joyce Staid, reliable Harold lives with his wife Maureen in Devon. When Harold receives a letter
from an old friend, Queenie, telling him she’s terminally ill, he pens a short reply and sets off to the post box. But his walk to the end of the road turns into a somewhat longer trip, as he decides to deliver the letter in person, and on foot. As he travels the long road north, both Harold and Maureen are given the time to look back on their long marriage, and figure out whether it can be saved. Beautifully written, and at times extremely poignant, this book is highly recommended. The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared – Jonas Jonasson Allan has just about had enough of his care home, with its condescending manager, rubbish food and endless rules. So on his 100th birthday he makes his escape, in his slippers. After stealing a suitcase full of money, Allan begins a dash across country, picking up new friends as he goes (including an elephant called Sonya). As we learn of his extraordinary life, it becomes clear that there’s rather more to this centenarian than meets the eye, including a passion for explosives…

more. Much of what we see today is the legacy of MariaTheresa, the 18th century empress and only female ruler in the Habsburg dynasty. So Schönbrunn enjoyed a golden age as palace and gardens were remodelled for the pleasure of the empress and her court. Most impressive is

the dazzling Hall of Mirrors where, they say, six year old Mozart performed for the empress before ‘springing onto her lap and kissing her heartily’. The Blue Chinese Salon with its rice paper hangings, the Porcelain Room and the Millions Room decorated with Indo-Persian miniatures are also due to Maria-Theresa, reflecting her love for all things exotic. A day would barely suffice to do justice to every room opened to the public, but of special note are the Walnut Room, used as an audience hall by Emperor Franz Joseph, his wife Sisi’s apartments where a secret staircase allowed her to escape from the pressures of the Court, the
Beyond the wrought iron gates, the elegant façade, painted ‘Schönbrunn yellow’, rises across a vast courtyard where horse-drawn carriages invite visitors to explore the grounds in style. 43 metre long Great Gallery which hosted banquets and balls, the Hall of Ceremonies and its monumental paintings, the Chapel and the Napoleon Room where the French Emperor stayed when he occupied Vienna. Beyond this palatial treasurefilled interior, the Habsburgs displayed their wealth and power in extensive grounds, from the botanical garden and Europe’s oldest zoological park to the orangerie, the palm house and the English and French gardens, the latter by a disciple of Le Nôtre who designed Versailles. Nature reserve, pristine gardens and recreation area all in one, the figures speak for themselves: 25 km of trees along the avenues, 30 km of hedges, 300,000 plants and 20 hectares of lawns mowed up to 21 times in season. Entry to the gardens is free and locals and visitors alike come to relax, gazing in wonder at the blazing colours of superb flower beds, listening to the cool gurgling of Neptune’s fountain or rambling through dark mysterious woods. There’s a manicured maze, a set of 18th century follies named ‘Roman ruin’, 32 neo-classical sculptures and a triumphal arch, or gloriette, on the hill top with panoramic views over palace and garden and the city beyond. It’s no wonder this is acclaimed as the best preserved Baroque garden in the world. The Austrian Empire came to an end after the first Word War but with its palace and gardens, Schönbrunn remains for all to enjoy and an enduring magnet for television and film crews, as seen in James Bond ‘The Living Daylight’ or the legendary Sisi trilogy.

Acupuncture is not all about needles!
eople are fascinated when I discuss the benefits of acupuncture and want to try it for themselves, but then comes the familiar phrase … “I don’t like needles.” This fear is the number one reason that people don’t try acupuncture, and miss out on the countless benefits. Here are five things to remember:
1. Acupuncture needles are tiny Acupuncture needles are solid and hair thin, and most people barely feel them go into the skin. I joke with patients that if my needles were like medical needles I would have gone out of business years ago! Acupuncture needles are so fine that they bend when touched. Up to forty acupuncture needles can fit into the barrel of a hypodermic needle! 2. Children do it I have treated babies, and regularly treat children and teenagers. If they can do it, so can you!
3. Don’t call them needles I leave the name ‘needle’ to the medical profession and chose different names for the tools of my trade. 4. You are in control During your treatment you call the shots and can choose what feels best for you. I am always in the room to give you the reassurance you need. 5. It’s not all about needles Acupuncturists have many tools including cupping, heat application and massage. I aim to help people to feel comfortable with choosing acupuncture to improve their health, so why not give it a try! Jo Phillips BSc(Hons), BA(Hons), LicAc, MBAcC. Hobbies Hallelujah! Why Joining A Choir Is Something To Celebrate by Kate McLelland
I
t’s my first session with my local community choir but we’ve spent the past twenty minutes doing physical exercises, learning breathing techniques and attempting tongue twisters. I’m wondering when I will actually get the chance to sing? As if he could read my mind, Graham - the Choir Director - launches into an explanation of why it’s so important to spend time warming up both our bodies and our voices.
At the end of a two-hour session, during which we tackle songs ranging from “All That Jazz” from the musical Chicago to Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah”, my new choir buddies and I are all excited and elated. We are already discussing the possibility of taking part in a local festival. Back at home, reflecting on my first ever choral session, it occurred to me that there’s a lot more to joining a choir than just enjoying a good singalong, and this view is backed up by a number of high profile experts in the world of the arts, education and medical science. Professor Graham Welch, Chair of Music Education at the Institute of Education, University of London has extensively studied the developmental and medical
aspects of singing. He claims that the health benefits are both physical and psychological. “Singing has physical benefits because it is an aerobic activity that increases oxygenation in the blood stream and exercises major muscle groups in the upper body, even when sitting.” He believes that singing is also important for mental health: “reducing stress levels through the action of the endocrine system, which is linked to our sense of emotional well-being.” He also believes that there are psychological benefits from the increased sense of community, belonging and shared endeavour that comes from choral singing. Choirs come in all shapes and sizes so it’s important to find one that suits you: ClassiCal ConCert Choirs or Choral soCieties Large choirs that stage several concerts throughout the year, sometimes with an orchestra. They may perform concert works such as Mozart’s Requiem or Handel’s Messiah. ChurCh Choirs Depending on the type of worship practised by the congregation, you could find
yourself singing traditional sacred music, gospel songs or modern hymns that sound more like pop hits. Community Choirs and other singing groups Depending on what’s available in your local area you might find choirs that sing rock and pop, songs from the shows, folk songs or even beatbox and rap. Generally speaking any group that describes itself as a ‘community choir’ is less likely to require you to audition or read music. When looking for a choir to join look in our Clubs & Societies section first. Most choirs are happy to welcome new members so get in touch with the Choir Director to ask about the standard expected of new members. Do you need to audition? Is reading music a requirement? How much does it cost to join and what is the commitment? Being in a choir provides an opportunity to sing songs you love with like-minded people, and to share your love of music with others through performance. If that doesn’t persuade you to join, then the health and wellbeing aspects of choral singing certainly should.

Gadgets For The Indoor Gardener You don’t need to get dirty to grow great things
S
pring has sprung and it’s gardening season. But not everybody has a garden or access to decent growing space - and even if you do have the space, the recent stormy weather has been enough to keep all but the most determined gardener indoors. Don’t despair, though: there are plenty of gadgets that enable you to grow great things indoors or when you have limited space for green things. There are even tools to design gardens that don’t exist.
(from £6 to £16) are designed for those of us who don’t always remember to water our plants, and do a superb job for very little money. Fancy something a little more high-tech? The Click and Grow (£59.95 from clickandgrow.com) describes Click and Grow Smart Garden.
If you’re also a keen cook, you’ll like the Indoor Allotment (£24.99, currently on pre-
Indoor Allotment
order at Firebox.com): it’s a miniature herb garden complete with picket fence and storage shed. It includes basil, coriander and oregano along with everything you need to get your herbs growing - and it’s small enough to fit in the corner of a windowsill. If you fancy something a little bit more ambitious, IKEA’s Socker miniature greenhouse is just £12 with an assembled size of 45cm wide, 22cm deep and 35cm high, which is more than enough for all kinds of plants. You can also keep the roof vents partly open to improve air circulation for plants that don’t like it too hot. While you’re in IKEA, it’s worth checking out their selfwatering plant pots too. The Sötcitron and PS Fejö pots
itself as a “smart garden” and uses a NASA-inspired combination of hydroponics and electronics to ensure that your plants get the right combination of water, oxygen and nutrients without you doing anything. It includes a LED lamp for maximum germination, and because it’s LED the running costs are microscopic. The creators suggest growing petunias, tomatoes, chillies, basil or thyme but it should be able to handle anything that isn’t too large. If you’ve got green fingered children, the Chuppon self-watering animal planter (£9.99) should delight them: it’s a ceramic animal with a herb basket on its back and a straw that sips from any glass or mug. There are four animals and four herbs to choose from, although of course you Chuppon self-watering animal planter
can put your own herbs in instead. Even the smartphone has made its presence felt in the world of gardening, and there are lots of apps and devices for indoor and outdoor gardening. One of the cleverest devices is the Parrot Flower Power, a wireless device that sits in your plant pot and monitors the plant’s health, sending alerts to your phone. It’s available for Apple and Android phones, measures sunlight, temperature, fertiliser and moisture, and it currently costs £42. That’s probably a bit
Parrot Flower Power
steep if you’re growing cress, but if you’ve got something exotic or temperamental it could be a very wise investment indeed. There’s another type of digital gardening you can do, and that’s to create a virtual one in your computer - something you can do just for fun, or to plan what you’ll do to a real garden space. There are many garden planning apps to choose from, including My Garden (free from www. gardena.com/uk) and Marshalls Garden Visualiser (free from www.marshalls. co.uk). Happy gardening!

Portrait of a Local Artist Durdle Door, Lulworth Cove and Kimmeridge are all beautiful locations that have frequently inspired Tim Burns, who can often be found painting in-situ. Tim has always been interested in art, having painted since his school days. “But during some periods I directed my energy exclusively on drawing, I have also worked in clay quite extensively,” he reveals. In 1973 he took his Foundation Course at Medway College of Design. This sufficiently wetted his creative appetite driving him to take an art degree at West Surrey College of Art and Design in Farnham (now University of the Creative Arts). Now living in Hampshire, Tim first exhibited in 1977 at the New Ashgate Gallery in Farnham. One year later one of his paintings was exhibited in the Royal Academy Summer Show. “I then enjoyed my first one man show,” he recalls. “During the intervening years I taught art whilst maintaining my own work and exhibiting throughout that period. I retired from teaching in 2013 in order to work full time on my painting.” Since taking early retirement from teaching in 2013, Alton based Tim has been working mostly on marine landscape and related still-life subjects often bringing both elements together in one painting. “My work reflects the world around me, whether it be the places I visit, the contents of my fruit bowl, my ceramics collection or bits and pieces from the beach or garden,” he explains. “Each painting reflects an aspect of my world and many of them have their own story to tell. Whatever the subject of my work, be it on canvas, paper or driftwood each painting is another step on a journey. The subjects are traditional but I am picking my own path and the paintings document the course that I travel: literally and creatively.” Tim regularly exhibits his work and he is a member of Creative Coverage. www.timburns.co.uk

Health
Should You Be Wary Of Wheat? By Alison Runham
I
f you suffer from bloating, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, stomach cramps or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), maybe you should be. However, ALWAYS see your GP (rather than self-diagnosing) if these symptoms are severe and persistent, especially if you have blood in your stools, vomiting, excessive bloating or very painful stomach cramps - it may indicate more serious medical conditions. Wheat allergy, wheat sensitivity/intolerance and Coeliac disease are often confused, so let’s get them straight.
WHEAT ALLERGY If you are truly wheat allergic, eating wheat will rapidly provoke allergy symptoms such as itching, rashes, sneezing and wheezing. You’ll need to avoid wheat in any form and see your GP. COELIAC DISEASE Coeliac disease is an autoimmune condition that affects around 1% of people in the UK and often goes undiagnosed. In Coeliac sufferers, the intestinal lining becomes damaged because it can’t absorb gluten, a protein found in foods including wheat, barley
and rye. Tiredness, hair loss, mouth ulcers, anaemia and unexpected weight loss, alongside gastrointestinal symptoms, can indicate Coeliac disease. Diagnosis is by a blood test and biopsy. Both tests are only accurate if you’re still eating gluten, so you’ll need to continue eating gluten until the tests are complete. If Coeliac disease is diagnosed, you must avoid gluten permanently. WHEAT INTOLERANCE/ SENSITIVITY Wheat intolerance or sensitivity is much more common than wheat allergy. Symptoms can develop some hours after eating wheat, which can make the condition hard to pinpoint, and it’s not something your GP can test for. Try eliminating wheat for four weeks to see if your symptoms improve (ensuring you replace it with healthy alternatives like rice, corn, buckwheat pasta and quinoa). Remember that wheat is in most breads, cakes, pastas, pastries, cereals, couscous, biscuits, beer, soy sauce and hydrolysed vegetable protein (HVP), and is a hidden ingredient in many other products. Keep a food diary in case another food type, such as dairy, is the culprit – but don’t eliminate whole food groups long-term without consulting your GP. Reintroduce wheat slowly (preferably starting with 100% wheat products). If your symptoms reappear, it’s a
good indication that you have wheat sensitivity; trial and error will tell you whether you’re sensitive to all wheat products or just some. This can depend on the process the wheat has undergone; some people can tolerate toast and pasta better than bread, because the heating process makes the wheat more digestible. Supermarket bread may be less digestible than traditional bakery bread, as supermarkets use an accelerated bread-making process. IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME (IBS) If your symptoms don’t seem specifically tied to wheat, you may have IBS. While the causes are not entirely clear, stress, illness, high-fat or highfibre foods seem to precipitate attacks, making bowel function erratic and causing gastrointestinal symptoms. Probiotic supplements or foods can help, as can medication prescribed by your GP. Tackling Wheat Sensitivity and IBS: The FODMAP diet Designed originally for people with (IBS), the wheat-free low-FODMAP diet eliminates Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides And Polyols - types of carbohydrates that aren’t easily digested and may cause bacterial growth, leading to diarrhoea and bloating. The FODMAP diet should be followed under a dietician’s guidance to ensure you stay healthy and follow it correctly, as it’s quite complex. Your GP can give you a referral. Don’t be Taken In By The Pension Scammers By Ann Haldon
S
ince new pension regulations were introduced in 2015, conmen have been using the new freedoms to target people approaching retirement. One of the scams involves telling those under the age of 55 that a ‘legal loophole’ allows them access to their full pension, with no requirement to pay tax on the money withdrawn (in reality, a rate of up to 55%). Pension monies are then moved into an alternative scheme run by the fraudsters, with savings either being stolen or severely diminished after extortionate charges are made for the ‘service’. To make matters worse, HM Revenue and Customs has been sending out bills to reclaim tax on the amounts withdrawn, leaving victims of the scam with no pension savings and in large-scale debt in some cases. How can tHe conmen operate so effectively? Although younger people are a clear target for pension scammers, those aged 55 and over are also under threat. With no restrictions on how pension savings can be used, unscrupulous individuals and criminal groups are taking advantage of a lack of regulation within the industry, plus an uncertainty about how best to invest such a large amount of money. Inefficient systems also form part of the problem, enabling conmen to set up these rogue pension schemes. HM Revenue and Customs are not pension regulators, but having introduced a ‘fit and proper
person’ test in 2014, they have at least attempted to control the potential for fraudulent activity. HMRC has the power to deregister or refuse to register a new pension scheme, but some have said they should take more responsibility for what is happening to victims, rather than chasing them for tax payments. project Bloom taskforce A new taskforce has been set up by the government and the National Crime Agency to combat the problem of pension fraud. A ‘perfect storm’ of new pension regulations, lack of awareness about where to reinvest, and the fact that large sums of money are involved, has enabled scammers to get away with too many sophisticated cons. It’s hoped that Project Bloom will bring awareness to the issue, however, and specific advice is offered to anyone concerned about their pension. You need to be wary of: • Anyone offering a ‘free pension review’ or access to your pension pot if you’re under the age of fifty-five • Offers of help to obtain a pension statement, or to provide a tracing service for lost pensions The Pensions Advisory Service provides free advice if you’re worried about potential scams, or to discuss your pension options in general. a sopHisticated approacH One of the problems is that scammers set up
sophisticated systems and procedures that include glossy brochures and polished, well-rehearsed speeches. This makes the entire con appear legitimate unless you’re aware that this type of fraud is taking place. Bringing awareness of what’s happening is key to combating crimes like this, and hopefully Project Bloom will help to prevent more people suffering the devastating loss of their retirement income. watcH out for fake weBsites Fraudsters are even setting up fake websites with names very similar to legitimate bodies offering free advice. They may be able to gain access to your personal information in this way, and then contact you directly via phone or email. It pays to check the web address you’re typing in very carefully, to ensure that the site is legitimate and not part of the fraudsters’ arsenal of tricks. http://home.bt.com/lifestyle/ money/investing-pensions/ pension-liberation-scamvictims-facing-huge-taxbills-11364036908047 http://www.thisismoney. co.uk/money/pensions/ article-3419232/Shouldpension-scam-victims-let-taxbills.html http://www.thisismoney. co.uk/money/pensions/ article-3397828/Three-telltale-signs-duped-pensionfraudsters.html

Around Britain
5 British Islands
1. Piel - Piel is the smallest of the four inhabited Islands of Furness that lie off the coast of Cumbria. Whilst the largest of these islands, Walney, is England’s eighth biggest and has a population of over 10,000, Piel is just 8 hectares in size and has a permanent population comprising the landlord – known as the ‘King of Piel’ – of the island’s Grade II listed Ship Inn. 2. Gairsay - Gairsay has a population of just 3, making it one of the least populated of all of Scotland’s offshore islands. Nevertheless, it is officially permitted by the Royal Mail to produce its own stamps. 3. Lundy - A little over one square mile in size, Lundy lies 12 miles off the north coast of Devon in the centre of the Bristol Channel. Despite its relative isolation and small size, Lundy has its own pub, shops and church, produces its own stamps, and has a resident population of 28. 4. The Calf of Man - Aside from the Isle of Man itself, the only other inhabited island in the Man group is the Calf of Man, a square-mile islet lying just off its southernmost tip. A census in 2006 recorded a population here of just 2 – namely the wardens of an RSPB bird observatory opened in 1962. 5. Brownsea - Brownsea is the largest of the dozen or so islands found in Poole Harbour in Dorset. It is also arguably the most well known, having been the location of Robert Baden-Powell’s inaugural Boy Scout camp in August 1907. © Taken from The British Isles: A Trivia Gazetteer by Paul Anthony Jones, out now.

Are you a Unitarian without knowing it?
R
egardless of today’s widespread secularism, the spiritual outlook and religious experience don’t go away. People still feel awe, gratefulness, wonder, reverence, a conscience-driven demand to help others, something unexplained beyond words.
If you are not helped by the traditional answers about community, compassion, and what life’s all about, perhaps you instead need to find people who keep playing with and celebrating the questions.
The Unitarians. Together in community for our individual journeys of spirituality and faith.
