Dear Readers,

n my opinion one of the most quintissential sounds of the English Countryside especially on a Sunday morning is the sound of church bells, particularly when heard from a distance. Page 24 tells us all about bell ringing or Campanology. The photo was taken up inside the bell tower of our own Ringwood Parish Church on one of its rare open days and a fascinating place to visit if you get the chance if only for the marvellous views all around the Avon Valley. Following nicely from church bells and wedding bells in particular, is our article on page 8 all about online dating apps! Apparently in an HTC smartphone survey, 37% of people had met a partner via a dating app! I suppose I was initially amazed but that way you can at least assume

you have a fair amount of common ground initially which is a pretty good start! And continuing now on the technology theme, the Moors Valley article on page 10 tells us about a smartphone app combining technology and nature with what’s called ‘augmented reality’! A very clever bit of kit to encourage children to get out into the park and search for the Gruffalo! As I write the clocks have just gone forward, the weather has finally decided to improve so check out our What’s On pages 28 and 30 for lots of other things to do in the lovely Spring sunshine! Finally a date definitely not to forget - May 20th when we hold our Fanfare for Spring event - see page 29. It’s when Covent Garden comes to Ringwood!

his photo shows the single-storey flat roofed shop, unlike any other in Ringwood, which was built in the late 19th century on the corner of the High Street and Lynes Lane. Steven’s Directory of 1891 states it was then owned by Epps & Co, who ran one half as a ‘booksellers, stationers and fancy warehouse’ and the other half as ‘nurserymen, seedsmen and florists’. The company also had a peat c1927 depot at their nurseries near Ringwood Station, on a site called South End Grove, now Nursery Road. In 1921 Mr James Long moved from West Street (see December 2016 issue of Now & Then) to these High Street premises. In West Street Mr Long had described himself as a basketmaker but in his new business he was a seedsman. The words above the three arched windows read ‘Depot For Farm & Garden Seeds Tools Implements’. It is likely that the bearded man standing in front of the shop in the c1927 photo is Mr Long himself, anxiously eyeing the lady outside the greenhouse/conservatory part of the building, hoping she would come inside as a customer. Like Epps & Co before him, Mr Long sold a lot more than just farm and garden supplies. The left side of the building was the stationers and fancy goods department, as indicated by the doll and other items displayed in the left window. By the 1950s the stock was not quite so varied. Older residents of Ringwood still recall the evocative smell of fertilisers, plants and hessian seed sacks that pervaded the inside of the shop, by that time run by James’s

daughter, Miss Emily Long. Sadly the building was demolished in the late 1950s to be replaced by the current block of shops and offices. For many years the two shops facing the High Street were Mostyns curtains and Allum & Sidaway jewellers but recently they have become The Dressing Room ladieswear and Michael Matthews jewellers. The grand building just shown on the left of the c1927 photo, now occupied by Allum & Sidaway, was a rebuild of the facade of the old Market House which stood in the middle of the Market Place until 1867. The railings on the extreme right of the photo fronted Davis’s garage, once the house of the Dyer family. A remnant of these railings can still be seen outside the present occupiers, the Breast Cancer charity shop.

y sympathies were aroused the first time I met Abby, a friend-of-a-friend who had recently moved to my neighbourhood after a divorce. Aged 47, she had made the move in order to seek a different life for herself and her fifteen-year-old son. However, two years later my sympathy began to wear a little thin, after she repeatedly turned up at my house bemoaning the lack of eligible men in her life. On every occasion I would remind her that online dating was her best option for meeting a new partner, but she remained stubbornly unmoved. The process of online dating is very simple: just create a profile, check out potential matches, communicate with your chosen date and then arrange to meet. Given the scare stories we hear about fake profiles, romance frauds and stalking, Abby was right to be cautious, but probably not to the point of spoiling her best statistical chances of finding love. Staying safe online It’s natural to feel a little nervous about meeting a stranger for the first time, but there are certain common sense precautions you can take to stay safe. • Choose a username that

doesn’t reveal who you are and don’t give away your surname, contact information, home address or place of work when first setting up your profile. • Don’t give away too much information about yourself right away. Take things slowly, sharing more information when you feel comfortable to do so. • Never release financial information or give in to pressure to lend money. • Meet in public and stay in public on your first couple of dates and always let a friend know where you are, and who you’re meeting. Setting up a successful online dating profile The UK dating site Match.com says that when registering with a site it’s important to answer questions accurately for the best possible chance of finding your ideal match. When writing about your personality they recommend reading other profiles for inspiration or asking a friend to describe your characteristics. For maximum impact, start the description with an eye-catching opening paragraph, using key words relating to your passions and interests. The dating site Zoosk found that women get 60% more attention if their profile photo is

taken indoors, while men get 19% more attention if theirs is taken outside, particularly if the photo includes other friends or involves an active pursuit. What do I have to pay? Some sites are free to join, whereas an average paidfor site might cost between £13 and £50 per month. Some online services charge considerably higher membership fees. Are there sites specifically for mature people? You don’t have to restrict yourself to age-specific sites unless you feel more comfortable in doing so. Two of the most popular sites for UK dating are ukmaturedating. com and maturefreeandsingle. com. The popularity of online sites has boomed recently with the addition of mobile apps, with 37% of people surveyed by smartphone manufacturer HTC saying they had met a partner via a dating app. The message has finally got through to Abby, who went on her first date through an online site last week. Unfortunately he wasn’t the man of her dreams, but she nevertheless enjoyed the date. Thanks to that experience, she’s confident that it’s now only a matter of time before she meets Mr Right.

The Gruffalo come to life with new app!

n the first development of its kind, Forestry Commission England and Magic Light Pictures are bringing The Gruffalo characters to life in the Moors Valley forest through a new, free, augmented reality app. Moors Valley Country Park and Forest, near Ringwood is one of only 26 locations across England where visitors can join the Gruffalo Spotter adventure through the deep dark wood. Families can follow clues on an interactive trail and track signs of their favourite characters based on The Gruffalo, the best-selling picture book written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler. The self-led trail is packed with fun facts about forest animals with fantastic activities along the way. Once families have spotted the characters, they can use the app to bring the 3D character animation to life and take photos alongside them. These photos are automatically added to the device’s gallery, where they can be shared via social media using the hashtag #GruffaloSpotters. Taking family forest walks to new heights, the app mixes technology with the real world, encouraging children to get exploring, firing their imaginations and enabling them to have an all-new forest experience at Moors Valley. The Gruffalo Spotter’s app has been de-

veloped and animated by Nexus Studios and is available for free with no in-app purchases from the App Store and Google Play. A Gruffalo Spotters kit will be available to buy on site and includes animal facts, tips for tracking wildlife, an evidence collection bag, a magnifying glass and a pencil to make a note of your forest finds! St. Leonards Community Cafe raises £8,000 in 3 yrs.

uring January the Community Café in St. Leonards presented £2000 cheques to Sailability and the special unit at The Bishop of Winchester Academy for their work with students with Aspergers and Autism. The Community Café meets each Wednesday for coffee and a chat. At these meetings stalls selling homemade food and cakes, books, CDs and bric-a-brac help raise the funds for local charities. Since starting nearly 3 years ago we have raised over £8,000.

The local community of St. Leonards and St. Ives kindly give generously items for our stalls which help us with our fundraising efforts. Grass Snake pring has certainly sprung at Blashford Lakes Nature Reserve. Our overwintering flocks of ducks and geese will have departed, whilst migrant birds including swallows, swifts and martins will be arriving after their impressive journeys back to our shores. If you watch the surface of the lakes you should catch them displaying acrobatically over head as they feed. On the shore waders including little ringed plover, lapwing and dunlin will be showing as they too go in search of food. If the weather is fine the air should begin to come alive with the buzzing of insect wings whilst a grass snake might be glimpsed sunning itself on the logs in front of Ivy South hide. Leaves will be breaking bud with their brilliant fresh green colour now filling the woodlands, along with the flowering ground ivy, bluebells and violets and carpets of yellow primroses. On Friday 14th April you can join us for a self-guided

Easter Nature Trail, in search of spring wildlife and other seasonal highlights. Drop in to the Education Centre anytime from 11am until 2.30pm and allow 1 to 1&1/2hours for the activity. The dipping pond behind the Education Centre is a brilliant spot to sit and watch for recently emerged dragonflies, including the downy emerald and emperor. Damselfly species such as beautiful demoiselle, common blue, azure and blue tailed should also be on the wing. On Wednesday 19th April from 10.30am until 11.30am you can discover the wonderful wildlife lurking in the weedy depths of the Blashford pond by joining us for a family pond dip. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll supply the nets and expertise for fantastic family freshwater fun! Please telephone to book your place. The dawn chorus will be in full swing with birds busy mating and nesting. April is the month to listen out for the cuckoo as it arrives back from its African wintering grounds.

Their distinctive call swells an ever growing chorus which is noticeably louder by the day, as birds including garden, reed and willow warblers, blackcap and chiffchaff carve out their feeding territories. Join the Reserves Officer for a guided walk around the reserve in search of Blashfordâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s spring birds on either Wednesday 26th April or Monday 15th May, from 10am until 12noon. Lost: Babes in the Wood-part 1

inker, the lovely little cat we rescued from the burger bar on a local industrial estate, escaped from the house before we could get her neutered. She needed her freedom, so we kept a close eye on the security camera we keep in the barn, and there she was, so we were relieved she knew where to come for food. We searched around to see where she was sleeping and eventually found her sleeping in a large shed the pathway to which was obscured by foliage, so for us it was difficult to get to. We decided to clear the way so we could keep a better eye on her. We then set a trap to catch her again which we did and we placed her in a very large cage 12ft x 8ft which was sited in the barn. She had all she could wish for in there, but next morning she had managed to lift the chicken wire covering from the bottom and she had escaped. She was so determined to be free. She was born a feral cat, had survived on her own until we took her in, she was indeed a free spirit! Later we could see from the camera that she had become pregnant and we were very concerned for her but now she was no longer in the large shed and we had no idea where she was, but every night the camera showed her coming for food. We could not do any more for her, we just kept an eye out and sometimes she would appear from nowhere with that stare that said so much. For two nights at the end of May she did not come for food, we suspected she had given birth to her litter during that time so started to search for them, but we could not find them. It was an exciting time and we counted the days carefully keeping an eye for any signs they were on the move and at the end of 2 months we expected them to start appearing. We were surprised therefore when the camera again showed that Tinker was pregnant. Was

this possible when she was still feeding her first litter of kittens? We spoke to the Vet and he told us that if there is a male cat in the vicinity it would stimulate her to come into season, even if she is still feeding her litter. Now we had the prospect of a second litter although it was a daunting prospect having perhaps a total of 6 new kittens to feed. We waited and kept an eye on the camera, but no sign of the first kittens, only a pregnant Tinker coming to dinner. The 27th of August looked to have been the day of arrival for the second litter as she did not come overnight for food. Tinker We started another search, we found a track she had made and it led to a storm drain which ran under the road. Was this where she had hidden the kittens? Were there now 2 litters living under the road in a storm drain? We examined the area and realized we could not do this rescue alone so we telephoned the RSPCA and an inspector came, looked at the storm drain, but did not know how he would extract the cat and kittens, he went away. This was Friday. Sunday I was expecting visitors so went to the gate to open it and saw to my horror our little Tinker dead in the road! It must have just happened as she was still warm and bleeding, but I could see she was dead. Now we had a problem, two litters of kittens and we were not certain where they were. The Power to Surprise?

ia originates from South Korea, although now owned by another Korean company, Hyundai. This corporation has established design studios in California and Germany to enable car designs intended to fit Western expectations. To complete the circle, many Kia and Hyundai cars are manufactured within the European Union for sale across Europe. HyundaiKia has big ambitions, initially benchmarking Toyota across the board to enable them to make a concerted onslaught upon Europe and this worked to a degree - only later realising they needed to be better on all fronts than Toyota to secure both sales volume and profitability. With typical Korean impatience and determination, this has been achieved. The subject of our test is the “Kia Optima Sportwagon 1.7CRDi ‘GT-Line S’ 7-speed auto DCT ISG”, I thought you might like to memorise this. Personally, I called it Bruce. Bruce is a Mondeo-size estate car with a small-ish diesel engine and a quick-shift automatic gearbox, with top-dog interior appointments and all the electronics they could find from the toy cupboard. Whichever way you cut it, you would need a really wide car to fit that long description on the tailgate. The Series 1 Optima was offered only in saloon format and was very similar to it’s sister car, the Hyundai i40 which was bargainbasement priced

and bought in much larger numbers, also being offered as a ‘wagon’, where it had much success as a private hire taxi. Frankly the design was weirdly oriental, with quality and finish strangely wanting. It was a so-so drive, with a small engine struggling to achieve acceptable acceleration and missing out on economy. Kia set their prices and sales expectations low, aiming mainly at the fleet market. Puzzlingly, the otherwise similar cars imported into North America came with a whole range of alternative engines and luxury packages which were denied to the UK and Europe, and achieved far more sales success there. Now roll out the new Series 2. Bruce is a thoroughly reengineered car, he looks very upper-bracket European while maintaining typical Kia design signatures, and in his rangetopping GT-Line identity very handsome, even if the large, wide Kia grille looks somewhat aggressive. The Sportwagon body style has been added, so practicality for larger loads is greatly enhanced, although limited by the steeply sloped tailgate. Step inside, and interior quality has taken a quantum leap to something akin to Audi quality and luxury,

while pushing the frontiers of technology much further. This is a car to be visually admired. However, it retains a 1.7 litre Diesel engine which now has both improved power and economy, so on-road performance is somewhat improved, aided by the automatic gearbox which is of the DCT type, using electronics to change gears seamlessly in a traditional cog-type gearbox. All good so far. But how does this translate into on-the-road experience? On this top version, plenty of seat and steering wheel adjustment enables a comfortable driving position. A clear array of quality major dials, symbols, switches and mirrors together give an excellent first impression and promote driving confidence. Comfort is also high in the rear seats. Noticeable Diesel rattle is present until hot, and road rumble and jiggling are transmitted into the passenger compartment through the very large tyres. Speed sensitive steering allows the car to be placed precisely and the engine-gearbox combination is adequate in cut-andthrust traffic situations, while motorway cruising is smooth and quiet. In summary, a good compromise between comfort and a sporty, confident drive. This is a car is one you would actively want to drive and with a price range from £23-30,000 depending on specification, is a good deal in medium-large load carriers. Thanks, Bruce.

ell-ringing is a tradition that has lasted for at least two thousand years, so it hardly seems possible that one day local community groups might stop coming together to ring out those powerful messages of joy, sadness and celebration. Unfortunately that day could be closer than you might imagine. A survey recently carried out by BBC local radio shows that bell-ringers across the country are finding it harder and harder to recruit new volunteers. Almost 75% of the bell-ringers questioned said that over the past ten years they have found it harder to find new recruits, particularly young people under the age of 21. There have even been calls to reclassify bell-ringing as a sport in order to gain access to funding, raise its profile and make it appear ‘cooler’ to a younger generation. Ironically this comes at a time when bell-ringing is more in demand than ever. Over sixty per cent of the BBC survey respondents said that requests for their services had increased over the past decade.

HOW DO I START? You don’t need to be super-fit, or have a lot of upper body strength, to be a bell-ringer. Ringing is the perfect way to enjoy gentle physical exercise and is suitable for people of all ages. The action of pulling on the rope not only gives your muscles a mild workout, it also improves agility, reaction time and co-ordination. There are 40,000 bell-ringers in the UK, many of them qualified to teach. You can find a group near you by going to www.bellringing.org and searching their database, or alternatively ask your local church if they run taster sessions. HOW DO I LEARN? Novice bell-ringers are usually taught in several stages: during the first session they will learn to handle the bell (this is usually done on a one to one basis); in the second they will learn to ring with others. After this students learn about ‘change ringing’, where ringers are required to sound their bells in a particular order, building up from simple to more complex patterns of ringing. The tutorial period usually ends with a 45-minute session during which students demonstrate

that they have mastered the techniques. THE BENEFITS OF BELL-RINGING Dickon Love, who is Tower Captain at the quaintly named church of St James Garlickhythe in London, describes bell-ringing as: “The best form of heavy metal … a big loud noise. It keeps you fit, there’s a competitive element as well, and it’s a very social thing to do - after each practice without fail you can find us down the local pub!” Many teams also organise monthly gatherings or plan outings to ring bells in different parts of the country, while some are even invited overseas to ring in churches as far away as Australia. If you’re competitive, you may relish taking part in contests such as the National Twelvebell Striking Contest. So, if you’re up for some gentle exercise and braintraining, you enjoy socialising with other like-minded people and you want to protect an important part of Britain’s heritage, bell-ringing could be the hobby you’ve been looking for. Angkor Wat Cambodia By Solange Hando

rom the 9th to the 15th century, the Khmer dynasty ruled one of the largest kingdoms in south-east Asia. Today Angkor, their ‘capital city’, is a unique history book highlighting the different styles and cultures which evolved over the 300 years it took to complete. It’s a World Heritage site, a ‘lost city’ claiming hundreds of temples and ruins scattered in a vast archaeological park. Most iconic is Angkor Wat, the best preserved temple and the largest religious structure in the world. It was built in the 12th century to honour the Hindu god Vishnu, was later used for Buddhist worship, and is featured on the national flag.

Rising like a dream above the plain, it’s the finest example of Khmer classical architecture, stylish and harmonious with towers and colonnades reflected in a lotus pond. It’s a breathtaking sight, especially in the soft light of dawn tinged in silver and gold. The sandstone glows, almost surreal, birds stir in the trees and monks in saffron robes meditate at the water’s edge. The causeway leading to the entrance is still deserted and for the early pilgrims, this is a sublime vision of heaven as

lotus-shaped towers mirror the five peaks of Mount Meru, the home of the gods. The first westerner to set eyes on Angkor Wat was a Portuguese monk in the 16th century, who spoke of ‘a building like no other in the world…with all the refinements the human genius could conceive.’ But the gods must have played a part for whatever the time of day, the temple is pure magic, shimmering in the cool of the morning, burning in the midday heat, silhouetted against the darkening sky in the last rays of the setting sun. So from morning to dusk, the visitors pour in, spellbound as they shuffle around the lower gallery, marvelling at the bas-reliefs stretching for 800 metres around the central temple and regarded as the greatest artistic legacy in Angkor. There are epic legends and battle scenes but most highly praised is ‘The Churning of the Ocean Milk’, where devils and gods fight for immortality, the latter led to victory by some of the 3,000 heavenly nymphs, or apsara, found in Angkor Wat. They also line the walls on the second level, encouraging meditation before the near vertical climb to the top, an

act which requires unflinching concentration and a very slow descent. Visitors clamber down backwards and one can’t help wondering how the high priest ever managed to preserve his dignity. But when you’re up there, the world is at your feet, the courtyards, the galleries, the entrance gates at each cardinal point, two of them large enough to accommodate elephants. The oversized moats glisten like oceans, the outer walls mark the edge of the world and the forest spreads as far as you can see, hiding more vestiges from a glorious past. It’s a sacred replica of the universe, they say, and you can feel the vibes in the air. Back on the ground where city and palace once stood, cicadas whir in the trees and lizards bask in the hot sun. ‘Close your eyes’, whisper the guides, ‘and feel the past clinging to the stones.’ Then for a moment or two, you step back in time, sitting in the Royal Court, bewitched by the wonderful apsara and dreaming of the legendary seven-headed snake who built a rainbow bridge to link heaven and earth by the lofty towers of Angkor Wat.

Following on from the successful production of 2 of the Deckchairs series of plays by Jean McConnell in 2015, the players will perform a few more of the short plays - some comedy and some more dramatic. They will also be looking to perform a number of short monologues from the “Ladies On The Costa” series by Lindy McNaughton Jordan telling the stories of ladies that have ended up living in Spain for all sorts of reasons.

This mixture of comedy and drama has something to suit everyone and is a production not to be missed! Performances will be held in the drama studio at Burgate school over three consecutive nights starting Thursday 1st June at 7.30pm. “Our daughter had a 3 day ‘entitlement’ to day care at the Fernmount Centre which has since closed and provision outsourced privately. Each day she is collected by car at about 9am and taken off to do mainly informal social activities, including the pub, skittles and the like; she likes the once a week friendship group. She enjoys these days and returns home at approx 3.30pm. We felt that 3 days would not be sufficiently inspiring and she now attends a facility in Ringwood on Tuesday, where she is actively engaged in workshops, including working in the kitchen and café; she really likes her Ringwood day. She was given £30 per week as a direct payment to substitute for her Fernmount days; but costs are now £49. She

also attends the local college for 3 workshops on Thursday. This has become much more expensive but she is able to afford it with her own benefits. Friday is a home day. This is our daughter’s week and we are fortunate because we know how to navigate the system.” Although a personal story, it is not the same for everyone with learning difficulties. People who fear abandonment may have experienced physical separation from loved ones in childhood, through abuse, divorce, death or a long term hospital stay. However, emotional abandonment from parents, siblings, partners, peers will also lead to the trauma of the fear of abandonment. We all react to the fear of rejection. The fear of abandonment affects us at a deeper, unconscious level. It can cause significant impairment, particularly with regard to developing healthy relationships not only with others but also with ourselves.

Portrait of a Local Artist Oil painter Jenny Sutton is a Dorset girl, regularly revisiting the county.

“My 96-year-old mother grew up in Wimborne and her father was HJ Evans, who was a wellknown character in the town in the ‘20s and ‘30s,” says Jenny, who attended Parkstone Grammar School. “He owned the newsagents and booksellers in East Street and when cars first appeared in Wimborne he used to take pride in personally directing the traffic.” Jenny’s other grandparents ran the Coventry Arms at Corfe Mullen until the mid 1950s, where her father Ralph was brought up. “I have happy memories of fishing in the River Stour at the bottom of the then beautiful garden behind the pub. One summer, when I was six, I came across a snake in the vegetable garden. It was an adder, and Grandad dispatched it quickly with a hatchet. It was then displayed outside the bar for all to see!” Jenny, whose mum still lives in Wimborne, remembers summer holiday hikes with school friends across the Purbecks. “I always had a paintbox in my rucksack and usually ended up at the Bankes Arms at Studland for a ritual ginger beer! I also had a friend whose family lived on a converted lifeboat in Poole Harbour, and we would sometimes go to one of the islands to give the boat its annual airing. There we would picnic and swim, and of course out came the sketchbook!” Jenny read Fine Art at Reading University, and then ran her own gallery in Hampshire. She now regularly exhibits her own oil paintings, most recently being selected for the Creative Coverage Exhibition at the New Forest Centre Gallery in Lyndhurst, which finishes on April 2. Wheezes & Sneezes: How to Tackle Hay Fever By Alison Runham

Health

ay fever or seasonal allergies can be caused by the pollen of numerous trees, grasses or plants and it affects around 18 million people in the UK. Diagnosis If you’re unsure it’s hay fever causing your symptoms, see your GP. They may refer you for an allergen test to determine whether you’re allergic to pollen or other organic material such as animal hair or dust mites. A skin prick test only tests for the most common allergens, so it may be inconclusive. Your skin is pricked and exposed to a tiny dose of allergen - it should react if you’re allergic. A blood test for the Immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibody, produced when you encounter pollen, may also be used. symptoms Symptoms can range from mild to life-impacting: • itchy and/or runny nose • sneezing • irritated, itchy, watery eyes TreaTing Hay Fever How you treat your hay fever will depend on the type and severity of your symptoms. Research by Allergy UK in 2014 showed that 62% of sufferers found their current medication ineffective – yet they failed to seek better alternatives or didn’t use it properly (only 14% of steroid nasal spray users were using them correctly in the study). Ask a pharmacist for advice on the right medication

and alternatives if it’s ineffective. Ensure you follow doctor’s, pharmacist’s and manufacturer’s instructions carefully. See your GP if over the counter treatments aren’t working, or you develop sinus or ear infections. Oral Medications (Tablets and Liquids) Antihistamines block the action of histamine, a chemical triggered by allergen exposure, to reduce or stop your allergic reaction. They may not relieve a blocked nose but are usually effective against other symptoms. As a preventative, they work best if taken regularly and started in advance of high pollen count periods. They can also be taken as required when symptoms begin. Some older antihistamines (e.g. chlorpheniramine, known as Piriton) make you drowsy and can affect your ability to do your job or drive. However, most people now choose newer, nonsedating antihistamines (e.g. Loratadine). Steroids are only usually used short-term if other medications aren’t working or if your hay fever causes or aggravates asthma. They reduce symptoms by reducing inflammation. Nasal Sprays and Drops Decongestant nasal sprays unblock your nose but can cause rebound congestion after a few days, so only use them for occasional relief or as an additional treatment on days when symptoms are severe. Steroid nasal sprays or

drops prevent and reduce inflammation in the nasal lining and can help relieve eye itchiness too. Antihistamine nasal sprays relieve an itchy nose and reduce sneezing. eyedrops Antihistamine eyedrops reduce itchiness and watering. inhalers and injections If seasonal allergies cause or exacerbate asthma, you may be offered a steroid inhaler and/or a ‘reliever’, such as salbutamol (‘Ventolin’). Injectable medications may sometimes be recommended if steroids aren’t adequate. Monoclonal antibody treatments (‘mabs’) such as Xolair block a substance involved in allergic reactions. immunotherapy If your symptoms are persistent or severe, your doctor may suggest immunotherapy to progressively build allergen immunity. A specialist will gradually introduce your body to small amounts of allergen by injection or a sublingual tablet and monitor your reaction. Treatment is started three months before your trigger pollen season. PrevenTion Reduce pollen contact by avoiding drying washing outside, showering before bed and closing windows. he 35th anniversary celebrations for the twinning of Fordingbridge with Vimoutiers, Normandy, are fast approaching, and we’d love to involve the whole town. The dates are Friday 26th (evening), through to Sunday afternoon 28th May.

Hog roast and barn-dance on the Saturday evening. Church Service on the Sunday morning. Ploughman’s lunch for all. Guided walk on the Sunday afternoon. Cream teas on the Sunday afternoon to end.

The weekend celebrations include: A reception, Drinks and evening meal in the Town Hall with Live jazz to welcome the French visitors (over 70 are expected). A tournament involving the “Fordingbridge Turks”. The official signing of the updated charter. More music. A concert by the Hyde Band. A BBQ lunch for all the football teams. Dedication of a tree in the memorial garden.

We are seeking help please, from the Town’s people, to host some of the French families, and to help us set up some of the venues, including the Avon Way Community Centre. Hosts and helpers will all be welcome to attend the events mentioned above.
