Dear Readers,
his issue’s front cover picture of spring blossom over the front of a pretty thatched cottage is just one of many similar picturesque and attractive old buildings to be found tucked away around Ringwood’s lanes and alleyways. Collectively they help to retain that old market Town feel that Ringwood is well known for. Fortunately, despite one or two exceptions and the 1960s of course, the High Street hasn’t altered much over the years. Now & Then on page 6 features the current Santander property which looks much the same as it did over 160 years ago - apart from the inevitable shopfront upgrade and a bay window on the 1st floor. Many other fascinating Now & Then articles can be found on our website: www.roundaboutmags.co.uk
with best wishes,
Click on Articles/News, then click on Ringwood - Now & Then. Hopefully by the time you read this, spring will have arrived properly and we have all forgotten about winter, which this year seems to have beencondensed into just March! So time to pump up those bike tyres and get the family involved - page 10 gives us lots of ideas of how to get the youngsters out too. From bike trailers, rear mounted seats, front mounted seats and even tow bars! So much choice and with so many beautiful rides and off-road trails including the Castleman Trailway, Bournemouth Prom and the marvellous Moors Valley Country Park - there’s no excuse not to! For lots of other ideas of things to do check out our What’s On pages 26 & 28.

ROUNDABOUT
ROUNDABOUT RINGWOOD RINGWOOD & FORDINGBRIDGE & SURROUNDING VILLAGES
NOW and THEN 16 High Street, Ringwood. Santander.
March 2018
F
or at least a hundred years 16 High Street was an ironmonger’s. Back in 1865 it belonged to James Hiscock, who was also a corn dealer and seedsman, as is shown by the advertisement on his calling card. Bags of seeds, buckets and spades are all shown stacked up in front of his shop in traditional ironmonger’s fashion. The wide crinoline dresses of the ladies date this card to the 1860s. The three distinctive curved dormer windows on the roof remain the same to this day. By 1891 the business belonged to William Chilvers from Norfolk. The Chilvers family continued as ironmongers for the next seventy years, passing from William to his c1950
son Edwin and then to Edwin’s son Edgar. Chilvers was a household name in Ringwood, still affectionately remembered by many of the town’s older residents. The front of the property, shown on the right in the c1950 photograph below, changed very little from Hiscock’s day, except for the addition of a large bay on the right-hand first floor window. The shop finally closed in the mid 1960s and for a few years became a branch of Westminster Bank, which involved a completely different shop front and the addition of a metal balcony rail. About 1969 the bank moved over to the opposite side of the High Street when Westminster merged with the National Provincial Bank, becoming the NatWest. The property then became Abbey National building society, again involving a series of changes to the ground floor facade. In 2010 Abbey was rebranded as Santander UK bank, which it remains today.

On Your Bike by Kate Duggan
L
earning to ride a bike opens up a whole new world of fun and independence for children. Even babies and toddlers can join in the fun of a family bike ride, with a little help… BABIES can start joining you on bike rides from around nine months old, as long as they can hold their head up unsupported. You’ll need to choose between a trailer and a front or rear bike seat.
Parenting
CHILD BIKE SEATS start from around £30. The more expensive ones usually have extra features, such as a fivepoint safety harness, rather than a three-point one. Some have backs that can be tilted for on-the-go naps. FRONT-MOUNTED SEATS sit in front of you and attach to the frame. They sometimes have a shorter back than rear mounted seats, and usually have a lower maximum weight allowance, so they won’t last you quite as long. On the plus side, you’ll be able to see your child, which makes sharing a ride more fun. Some REAR SEATS fit to a pannier rack, while others fit to the frame. You might find
balancing is a little bit easier with a rear seat compared to a front one, and it should last you until your child is around four years old. Whichever type of seat you go for, you’ll need to check that it’s suitable for your bike and the weight of your child. Look for a seat with plenty of padding, a good safety harness and adjustable foot supports. BIKE TRAILERS are more expensive than seats, but you can pull older children, and often two at a time (plus picnics or shopping). Trailers usually have a cover, so your child will stay dry if you get caught in the rain, even if you get soaked. You might struggle with a trailer on steep hills though, and you’ll need a garage or shed to store it when it’s not in use. It’s a good idea to visit your local bike shop to speak to a specialist adviser before you make any decisions. They’ll be able to recommend a trailer or bike seat that’s right for you, your bike and your child. CyCLINg wITH yOUNg CHILDREN Once your child is old enough to ride a 16” bike, you might
want to progress from a seat or trailer to a Trail Gator or other tow bar. These attach your bike to your child’s, so you can pull your child behind you. They’re handy for when you fancy a longer ride than your child could otherwise manage. Some tow bars can be unclipped and folded down, if your child wants to ride on their own for a while. Your child’s bike might feel a bit wobbly when it’s being pulled, so tow bars aren’t suitable for children under around four. wHERE TO gO Lots of roads have designated cycle lanes now, and there are plenty of traffic-free routes to explore too. The National Cycle Network offers 14,000 miles of bike-friendly roads and paths. Visit www.sustrans. org.uk for free printable cycle route maps. Fancy joining other families for a bike ride? www.cyclinguk. org lists hundreds of UK cycling events, including ones that are suitable for families. It’s also worth asking what your local bike club has to offer, as lots of cycling clubs organise volunteer-led rides for beginners and families.

pring has definitely arrived now with the dawn chorus of birdsong and the buzzing of insect wings filling the air. Listen out as birds like chiffchaff and goldcrest use their song to stake their claim to their feeding territories. The birds on the reserve are busily mating, building nests and rearing their young. Last year visitors were treated to a mother lapwing and her chicks patrolling up and down in front of Tern hide. The swallows, swifts and martins have returned from their winter holiday in far off South Africa and are treating visitors to impressive flying displays as they greedily gobble up the insects above the lakes. It is amazing to think that the swallows zig-zagging over Blashford Lakes have travelled over two thousand miles, covering two hundred miles a day and reaching speeds of up to 35 miles per hour. No wonder they are so hungry! It is not just the birds celebrating spring on the reserve, take a walk along Dockens

Complete your visit by having a quiet sit down behind the education centre watching newly emerged dragonflies and damselflies as they zoom around in the spring sunshine. The warmer weather is bringing out an abundance of insect life with an ever growing list of colourful butterflies and shiny beetles. All you need then is to hear the easily recognisable call of the cuckoo echoing round and you will know that spring, with all its promise, colour and life is definitely here. All this makes Blashford Lakes Nature Reserve a wonderful place to enjoy all that spring has to offer and to nourish the senses. We know that a strong connection with nature has countless benefits for people’s health and wellbeing, which is why we began Natural Wellbeing sessions here on the reserve last year. The sessions run every Friday from 11am until 2.30pm and use the natural environment
to promote adult health and wellbeing, so are particularly beneficial for people who are suffering with mental health conditions. Participants are able to get involved with cooking lunch outside, wildlife watching, craft activities or they can just enjoy the peace and tranquility of the woodland with the company of others. an interior with sympathetic Tango detailing, excellent seats front and rear, technology oozing out of every cranny and dial - all really in your face -and surprise, lots of space including the boot and all within a relatively short car. This amalgam will please the kids, the 20-somethings who still have a lot of growing up to do, yet being a total anathema to Mrs Bucket. So, a kooky-looking on-trend car which you can even customise to the last detail - a different coloured roof, roof rails, body sides, interior.... bored yet? The piece-de-resistance for me was the optional £950 glass sunroof which also tilts and slides open to the elements, thus speeding the onset of hypothermia. Yes, it is that good. This fashion statement also has wheels and I used them. Despite the small engine, big wheels and a large frontal area to push through the air it nips along quite nicely, goes round corners very well and true to the French tradition has a nice smooth ride which was the biggest surprise of all. Equipped with all-weather tyres but not ‘Grip Control’,
road-holding and handling in our winter was pretty good and ultimately it was always the driver who chickened out. I was very disappointed to find that despite the off-road pretentions this car gave, it did not include this superbly clever ‘Grip Control’ which is an option available only at an extra cost of £400. I would certainly tick this option box it’s that good to enable a mere 2-wheel-driver to have about 90% of the get-out-of-slimeability of the average 4-wheel driver. This option gives great confidence and is more than adequate for your weekend overflow car parking lake but perhaps not Glastonbury? And our diesel consumption on test was a shade under 60mpg - incredibly miserly! This car is relatively inexpensive, ranging from £14k to £19k before adding options. As small quasi-SUV’s have become very ‘hot’ on the used car market, depreciation has to be set fair. This slashes away at cost of ownership as I don’t predict the SUV fashion going away any time soon. Unless finger-fidgets get a revival. I really enjoyed my time with this car but I don’t see such a flashy statement as regular transport. I’d rather slither along in something low and fast but inconspicuously anonymous. What a Luddite.
Mike's Motors
H
ave you noticed the fashion for pumpedup, chunky and possibly intimidating cars looking rather like pukka SUV’s (sports utility vehicles) - or in normal slang, Land Rovers? These are popping up everywhere and come in all sizes. Due mainly to their vertically accentuated stance, they offer both a relatively large passenger space and a commanding view over ‘normal’ saloon cars - but it is increasingly likely the several SUV’s in front of you are even taller than you! The chunky design suggests they have allwheel-drive, but this is seldom the case. Such is fashion. Todays’ fashion accessory is the new Citroen C3 Aircross, in my case with the sporty and ultra-clean 1.5 litre diesel engine and in the top ‘Flair’ specification. My car was finished mainly in Tango orange giving a very aggressive looking Tango bonnet with contrast detailing. And

Don’t Put The Blame On Me!
By Christina Smith
‘Don’t Put The Blame On Me!’ Is a very poignant song from the singer the Rag’n’ Bone Man, as we all have encountered being blamed and shamed within our relationships. For some people blaming and shaming others, especially our partners can become a habit. It has the power to destroy an intimate relationship. Blaming your partner or indeed yourself can become an addiction, something you unconsciously feel you have to do in order to make things feel right for you at that time. Unfortunately, like many addictions, it is something that slowly destroys your own self-esteem and the loving energy from your relationships. Sometimes we don’t even know we are blaming and shaming. We rush to ‘be right’ about a situation and feel that by berating our partner we are in effect balancing the scales of an imbalanced relationship where one partner is perceived to have more power than the other. By pointing out our partners mistakes we may believe we are going to be able to ‘fix’ or ‘change’ them. However, often the opposite is true, we actually create more distance in the relationship, more barriers and ultimately pain for ourselves. When you blame your partner you are not focusing on yourself and how you are really feeling. Blame and anger are intrinsically linked and often we don’t stop to understand what we are really angry about. By automatically blaming someone without taking responsibility for your part in the situation you create a very effective ‘cop-out’. You do not have to speak the real truth about how you are feeling. It is possible that behind your blaming and shaming behaviour are the feelings of rejection, fear of being taken for granted, not being loved enough or not ever being loved in the way you really deserve. If all your energy is spent on ‘being right’ and complaining about the other
person you are taking the focus off what will make you happy and content as a couple. Counselling can help you to look at your patterns of behaviour and give you the tools to make the necessary changes for your personal growth. The FORDINGBRIDGE PLAYERS present: ‘Snake In The Grass’ by Alan Ayckbourn
ollowing our highlyacclaimed performance of Curtain Up!, the Fordingbridge Players are back with a new production that will take our audience into a world of secrets, intrigue, deceit and murder. Snake in the Grass will be performed at the Burgate School drama studio, Fordingbridge, from the 31st May to 2nd June 2018 at 7.30pm. Snake in the Grass, written by the awardwinning playwright Alan Ayckbourn and directed by Richard Holland, is a play about the reunion of two sisters, Miriam and Annabel, after the death of their abusive father. A tale of blackmail, deception and murder ensues after his former nurse arrives to tell the sisters that his death may not have been quite as accidental as it seems. The twists come thick and fast as we realise that nobody is quite who they appear to be. It is a thriller; it is also a play about families. It may also be a ghost story,
though it would be wrong to give anything away. First performed at Scarborough’s Stephen Joseph Theatre in May 2002, starring Susie Blake and Fiona Mollison, the play has gone on to become one of the most frequently performed Ayckbourn plays. “A terrific piece – brilliant, bizarre and yet totally believable… In fact, it’s more than classic; it’s close to the top of its class.” - Yorkshire Post “A creepily, scarily, eerily enjoyable evening.” - Sunday Times This amateur production of “Snake in the Grass” is presented by special arrangement with Samuel French Ltd. The Fordingbridge Players are always happy to welcome new members, whether acting, backstage, or providing technical help. Visit www.fordingbridgeplayers.org.uk for details of how to join.

Starting School
C
hoosing the right school for your child is an exciting but sometimes daunting process. Every child is unique, as is every school. Ultimately, the school has to feel right for you as a family but there are so many other considerations as well. • Does the learning environment offer stimulation, wonder and challenge? • Can the children freely explore, both indoors and outdoors? • Are the class sizes and staff ratios better than the national average? • Does a trained adult listen to every child read daily? • Do even the youngest children have access to specialist teaching and facilities such as Forest School, Art, Sport and Music? • Are staff committed to helping every child reach his or her full potential? • Are the children supported in developing positive friendships? • Is each child nurtured and cared for as a unique individual?
Investing in Independent education can be a sacrifice but given that Durlston can answer ‘yes’ to all of these questions, it is an option that many families choose to explore. Visitors to our Reception classrooms comment on the happy and purposeful atmosphere, the high levels of achievement and the tangible sense of joy. A positive attitude to learning is embedded at a young age; this gift stays with our children as they journey through their school careers. If your child is taking his or her first educational steps, please do contact us. I would be delighted to give you a tour of our happy and successful school. Be Happy With a Book Whether you love curling up with a psychological thriller or prefer biographies, enjoy flicking through a cookbook or need business advice, we’ve got just the book to keep you and your e-reader happy.
Book Reviews
How Not To Be a Boy – Robert Webb Actor and comedian Robert Webb has turned his hand to writing, with great success. How Not To Be a Boy is part biography, part reflection on the expectations that are put on boys and men to act a certain way. Webb reveals his grief at losing his mother and his difficult relationship with his father, and ruminates on how trying to ‘act like a man’ has had a negative effect on his life. Through it all, Webb writes with his trademark humour, taking the reader from laughing out loud to blinking back tears in moments. The History of Bees – Maja Lunde The History of Bees tells the stories of three people, all connected by bees. In 1851, William is attempting to build a revolutionary beehive to bring honour and fame to his family. In 2007, George is struggling to keep the family bee farm going. Almost 100 years later, Tao is enjoying a rare day off from her job handpollinating fruit trees, when her son is taken seriously ill. The History of Bees was a surprise international bestseller last year and is ideal for fans of dystopian fiction.
Anything You Do Say – Gillian McAllister A split second decision has lasting implications for the protagonist in this tense psychological thriller. Late at night, believing that she’s being followed, Joanna lashes out, pushing her pursuer down a set of concrete steps. Does she call an ambulance, or walk away? Both scenarios are then explored. Ingenious, original and fast-paced, this is perfect for fans of Gone Girl and Girl on a Train. The Paying Guests – Sarah Waters It’s 1922, but the roaring twenties have yet to reach the quiet corner of London where Frances and her mother live. Frances has resigned herself to a life spent looking after the family home, but the arrival of lodgers Lilian and Leonard Barber reawakens her life, energy and passions. Paying Guests was published in 2014 and was named ‘Fiction Book of the Year’ by The Sunday Times, for good reason. A modern classic, it’s beautifully written, with believably flawed characters, plot twists and a building tension that’ll keep you reading ‘just one more chapter’ until late into the night.
Ultimate Fit Food – Gordon Ramsay Planning to get a bit fitter before the summer? Gordon Ramsey’s latest book might help. It’s split into three sections, each of which offers a range of dishes to promote general wellbeing, achieve weight loss or provide fuel for workouts. There are recipes for everything from healthy snacks and breakfasts to impressive main courses, and plenty of treats are included too. The emphasis is on dishes so delicious you’ll almost forget they’re good for you. Start Me Up – Various If you’re thinking of setting up your own business, take advice and inspiration from people who’ve done just that. Enterprise Nation is a website for small businesses and has recently released a free ebook. Start Me Up features stories from 100 entrepreneurs, including the owner of Cool Cold Brew, which will soon be available in Sainsbury’s, and the founder of the fastest growing baby food brand in the UK. You can download Start Me Up from the blog at www. enterprisenation.com.

Is It Worthwhile Taking Out Private Health Insurance?
Finance
P
rivate health insurance generally covers the cost of private consultations, treatments, and immediate aftercare as an inpatient. Some policies also pay for outpatient care, such as physiotherapy. Employers sometimes offer this type of insurance as a benefit to their employees, but if you’re thinking of taking out your own policy, how do you know if it’s going to be worthwhile? Before we look at the benefits and potential drawbacks of private medical insurance, here’s a little more detail on the cover that could be included. What might a health insurance policy cover? The benefits provided by private health insurance vary according to the monthly premiums, with comprehensive policies offering the greatest level of cover. Here’s a general outline of the main benefits: • Private consultations • Anaesthesia • Inpatient stays for investigative tests, surgery, or immediate post-treatment care • Treatments and procedures as a day patient • Outpatient treatments and aftercare - physiotherapy or hydrotherapy, for example hoW does private health insurance Work? Private medical insurance is designed to work alongside NHS services, so your GP would need to refer you for a private consultation. Policies are renewed annually, with monetary excesses applying
By Ann Haldon in the same way as with other forms of insurance. The insurer sets a limit on the amount of cover available to you annually. They define the benefits, plus any exclusions that apply - a pre-existing illness, for example - in the policy document. Why might you decide to take out private health insurance? • You need fast access to a consultation, investigative procedure, or treatment • Treatment isn’t available on the NHS • You’re employed, but don’t receive private health insurance as a benefit • You’d like to see a particular consultant, or require a specialist referral • You want the comfort of staying in a private room • You don’t want to wait for physiotherapy after surgery What are the potential draWbacks of private medical insurance? • Policies are costly, with premiums increasing every year • Some health conditions are excluded, so a private healthcare policy may not cover all your medical needs • You have to pay an excess each year • You may have ethical concerns about private health care • The insurer sets limits on the amount of cover available for each condition, each type of treatment, and an overall amount in the policy year
hoW much Will private health insurance cost? Various factors are taken into account by insurers when setting the price of private healthcare premiums - these include (but are not limited to): • Age • Existing health • Medical history as an individual, and of your family • Lifestyle • Types of cover required It’s advisable to shop around before buying private health insurance - comparison websites are a good way to find out about the cost of various policies. alternatives to private health insurance There are alternative ways to fund private medical treatment without taking out an insurance policy. If you have residual income or existing savings, for example, you could set aside a sum to cover a proportion of future treatments. Paying only for the initial consultation is also an option if you require an urgent medical opinion. The consultant would then refer you back to the NHS for treatment, if necessary. Healthcare cash plans also exist that help you cover your medical costs. In this case you’re refunded the costs that you pay up front, up to preagreed limits. www.money.co.uk/healthinsurance/how-does-healthinsurance-work.htm www.moneyadviceservice.org. uk/en/articles/do-you-needprivate-medical-insurance#whatdoes-it-cover

Are you a Unitarian without knowing it?
R
egardless of today’s widespread secularism, the spiritual outlook and religious experience don’t go away. People still feel awe, gratefulness, wonder, reverence, a conscience-driven demand to help others, something unexplained beyond words.
If you are not helped by the traditional answers about community, compassion, and what life’s all about, perhaps you instead need to find people who keep playing with and celebrating the questions.
The Unitarians. Together in community for our individual journeys of spirituality and faith.
